Duke Of Gordon Hotel descritpion

Situated in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, one of the last truly unspoiled parts of the world, the hotel looks out across the picturesque Spey Valley to the 18th century Ruthven Barracks.
A land dominated by rocks and streams, rivers and mountains, the area is steeped in history and heritage dating back 4000 years. During your stay you can easily discover the beauty of the Highlands, using the Duke of Gordon as your base. There are numerous routes just steps away, which can be enjoyed on bike or by foot.
With origins in the 18th century, the hotel was originally built as a stopover for passengers traveling by stage coach along what is now highway A9 to Inverness and the north of Scotland. Today it is a luxurious hotel offering the very best in Highland hospitality.

Reviews for Duke Of Gordon Hotel

Review 1:Not a complaint as such, but the bedrooms were very warm. Too hot for me but excellent for some older guests.

Review 2:Very friendly staff, nice room and breakfast was okay.

Review 3:Paid £10 each for fish and chips from the bar menu. Unfortunately it was not of a good standard and not as described on the menu i.e not at all crispy or fresh. It was a piece of grey fish in a soggy batter, some hot chips and some cold hard chips and insipid looking peas. Thankfully it was a meagre portion. Normally we would have brought it to the staffs attention had we not just had a 7hr drive, we just wanted to get to bed. Maybe this was just an off day for the "chef" but we felt we would have had better quality and taste from the chippy over the road.

Review 4:Apart from the low ceiling the room was pleasant enough. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was lovely and fresh. Breakfast was fine with a good selection for all tastes set in a lovely room.

Review 5:Very much a coach party hotel but we met some nice oap's and even got a present from the santa visiting their function.

Review 6:Very grand staircase and large open fire.nice ballroom and diningroom with some interesting art work

Review 7:The hotel appears to be truly centered around large Tour Groups vs. the 1-off traveler. My room location was in a spot that required me to go through the Main Events Hall on each occasion & there were special events (Private Bookings) in that room on each of the 3 nights I was there. There were plenty of rooms in the main part of the hotel, but based on who I saw coming/going from that area, those rooms must've been reserved specifically for the Tour Groups. Breakfast in the morning was obviously focused on the Tours as well, as I had to remind my waitress to bring me my coffee on the 1st morning after watching about a half dozen tea/coffee orders being taken out to the Group Tables or to other customers who arrived after me. The hotel also didn't seem to have any table area set aside for me; even though I had pre-paid for a Room/Breakfast Deal. It was also a bit bewildering as to why the Cleaning Staff left a bunch of cleaning rags sitting in my room on the 2nd night. The room was comfortable enough, but nothing spectacular for the £120/night fee.

Review 8:The front desk attendants were always pleasant & helpful. Free Wi Fi is always a plus, although their connectivity wasn't the best. The breakfast buffet selection was good & the chef was Extremely Polite & Efficient!

Review 9:The room was in need of a paint! Scuffed walls... Was dissappointed with fried bread being offered with breakfast buffet, instead of a Scottish tattie scone!

Review 10:Our room was above the ballroom where a CLAN REUNION WAS BEING HELD, but we got a move to a quieter room the second night

Review 11:Our second night in the hotel

Review 12:Coach-party friendly, which meant loud entertainment in the ballroom (directly under our bedroom) until late. Catering was for large scale, not very impressive - frozen food & greasy breakfast buffet.

Review 13:Location - great for access to the Highlands. Good price for rooms inc breakfast. Happy, helpful staff all round. "Extras" for breakfast - pancakes & poached haddock - freshly cooked & superb.

Review 14:No staff communication. Rang twice before stay to book diinner in dining room, told not necessary. On arrival told dining room was full, and they wanted us to eat in annex. Only after pleading with manager for 20 mins did he allow us to come later to dining room. Also requested child bed in each room - no bed appeared. Gave us double rooms for 2 parents with 12 year old child. Wont be coming back

Review 15:The four course vegetarian meal: service was bad, food itself was bad (no asking of staff how it tasted) and courses were too quickly followed after one another... Also breakfast was not sufficient for vegetarians. WiFi connection was bad (slow and mostly only near reception and not in our room).

Review 16:Location was great, near different hiking routes. Reception-staff was really friendly.

Review 17:Room decor was a bit tatty with untidy tiling, some mould on the ceiling and although the room was quite big the furnishing was quite stingy, no bedside tables??

Review 18:Helpful, friendly and welcoming staff. Simple but decent bar food in Gillies.

Review 19:Did not like the food or atmosphere in the bar. Although one lady was nice the other waiting staff were not bothered at all, there was no music and food was very poor and old fashioned.

Review 20:Nice clean hotel with traditional style and good breakfast.

Review 21:WiFi was poor. There was no elevator from second to third floor. We reserved a room with a double bed, but were given a room with twin beds.

Review 22:Room was nice and spacious. Staff tried to help with internet issues. Staff was also courteous and friendly.

Review 23:Cracked washbasin, no shampoo, small size and quality of bath towel (one for each traveller), tv placed precariously at odd angle on high shelf (was worried it would fall).

Review 24:Spacious room, helpful and friendly staff, good location.

Review 25:The Duke of Gordon Hotel provides an excellent touring base for the Badenoch and Strathspey Area. Located in the town of Kingussie it provided the ideal venue for an activity weekend. The staff were helpful and breakfast was tailored to taste, the stay was value for money.

Review 26:The stay was horrible. The bed ! It was so uncomfortable; the mattress was so uneven and bumpy. Some 'bits' from the mattress was poking my legs all night I had to put a towel on top to get some sleep. Don't get deceived by the pictures shown. The breakfast was not freshly prepared, and was not pleasant to eat.

Review 27:The toilet out pipe was held together with duck tape. The breakfast was a bit dry as had been sitting out for a while. The television all the channels where snowy. So was unable to watch it.

Review 28:The colleagues behind reception were lovely always willing to help you no matter what. The bed was really comfortable. The venison casserole was delicious.

Review 29:BT were improving the wifi so it didn't work at all!

Review 30:The location was ideal for the Grampions and the hotel comfortable and quiet, if a little dated. The restaurant served a four course meal but bar meals were available and excellent and it was overall reasonably priced.

Review 31:Very shabby needs a lot of work done to it cracked windows and sinks also we could not open our bedroom window bed linen and towels were at least clean x x

Review 32:Bit short staffed on reception at times. On a weekend!? Very nice hotel but a bit shabby now. Needs a lot of money spent on it. All carpets in hotel need to be cleaned. Carpet in room had many marks on it although standard of overall cleanliness very good. As I say, a lot of money needs to be spent here. Kingussie has nothing. Only scenery to offer now. Even the local pub The Tipsy Laird has closed down. There is nothing here.

Review 33:Very comfortable and very clean. Food in th Ghillies Rest bar fabulous.

Review 34:Needs Sky Sports for the football :-)

Review 35:Easy to find, staff were very helpful in this grand hotel, rooms are massive and Ive never slept in a bed so big. Very clean which helps my OCD girlfriend relax!!

Review 36:the bath was too small for a 6ft 4inch tall person and the shower was too low down even for me and i'm only 5ft 1inch!!

Review 37:the hotel was close to everything we wanted to do. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 38:The staff at Duke of Gordon was very friendly, especially the bar buy (Charlie if I remember his name correctly). We really enjoyed the stay, got to discover some great local whiskey (Dalwhinnie). Will definitely come back some time, and highly recommend the Duke to friends.

Review 39:The bar food was mediocre - packet food and not terribly well prepared at that - the scampi was more hard-crust than sea-food content.

Review 40:Very nice hotel in a good location - staff very very good

Review 41:The breakfast was terrible. Also a lady at reception was far from pleasant. Maybe because we were young I don't no. But either way are money is the same as everyone else's.

Review 42:The bed was good

Review 43:The service at breakfast was atrocious! We arrived and there were no sign to say wait to be seated and no staff to be seen so we selected a two seat table. As I was up getting my food a man started shouting at my partner saying that he was sitting at his table, my partner politely pointed out that there had been no indication that anyone was sitting here before us and that there were other tables free, the man continued to shout at him so he took our drinks and came to find me. I had collected my food by now so went to try and find a member of staff, which as nearly impossible -I had to stand by the kitchen door to catch anyone. They then made me stand by the entrance to the room while she looked through the list of rooms, she couldn't find my room number so then left me standing there with my, now almost cold, food. Eventually she came back and said there had been a mix up and that we could have a 4 seat table and then mad a massive, loud, fuss about moving two chairs away. We then had to ask multiple times to get tea and toast to our table. Overall a very negative experience that could have been solved by a simple sign saying please wait to be seated.

Review 44:The room had Vomfy beds with soft bedding. There was excellent service at check in, the woman realised that we had been put into a twin room by accident and chased us up the stairs to swap keys for a double room.

Review 45:£95 for a room, when I arrived they had a bill board outside displaying single occupancy rooms at £35. A complimentary bottle of wine in the room because the hotel manager felt I had been charged far too much for the room. I discussed this with reception who promised to speak with the manager, to no avail. Other issues, perhaps someone would like to e mail to discuss further.

Review 46:Not a thing.

Review 47:The breakfast on both days were cold. Window in room was nailed shut and could't open so room was very stuffy.

Review 48:Meal in Ghillies bar was excellent. Entertainment was good at hotel on both nights.

Review 49:wi-fi in room was very slow;

Review 85:the breakfast wasnt very good the scrambled egg had no taste and the bacon was'nt done enough

Review 86:Certain staff were ignorant

Review 87:Friendly welcome at check in,very reasonable prices at the bar

Review 88:Breakfast was very poor, although dinner the night before was very good.

Review 89:Only down point was some of the decor needed updating as it was a bit grubby.

Review 101:Excellent food and very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 102:The view from our room (422) worst ever, only good if you liked looking at slates!!!

Review 103:the staff, the cleanliness and the over-all feel, of the place.

Review 104:The receptionist, Fran was so helpful. Hotel was so cosy and homely. lovely atmosphere and excellent location for skiing at Aviemore.

Review 105:Bed matress was awful. It had "holes".

Review 106:good food, good staff, very helpfull

Review 107:A bit old fashioned needs up dating but think the older generation would prefer it

Review 108:Cosy hotel staff made you feel welcome

Review 109:creaky floors &stairs

Review 110:very friendly staff

Review 111:The food although tasty was obviously cooked for large parties and was served to individual guests straight out of large cooking dishes in squares - even the triffle and not into individual dishes. Toast at breakfast was served straight away and buy the time you were ready to eat it it was cold and rubbery. Most people prefer to eat their toast after the cooked breakfast and not before. No mattress protector on the bed which is very un hygenic!!!!

Review 112:Our room - although decor was looking a little tiered now. The view was stunning and nice and quiet.

Review 113:Having booked a double room back in April on arrival we were given a twin and told there were no other rooms available, even though we checked in at 2pm. Our room was accessible through the ball room which was closed for refurbishment that day so it felt like it was a bit like being staying in a building site

Review 114:hotel was very clean and seemed to be efficiently run. The check in was fast and the staff friendly

Review 115:The quality of the bar meal could have been better. Although thanks toJohn for arranging things close to the closing time. Closing time fortable food is too early. This is a general problem in Scottishhighlands. The service needs to change to a more europe/worldwideall-round service.

Review 116:Very pleasant surroundings re decor. I don't usually likevictoriana/regency style decor E.G. the furniture. But the hotel wasindeed pleasantly decorated to high quality. The room was just right.

Review 117:Staff very friendly and helpful, hotel full of character and charm. I actually like finding the decor a bit dated and the upholstery worn through use (as long as it's clean and it was). It adds to the character of a place and takes you away from the bland decor of the modern chains.

Review 118:Experience didn"t quite match what we expected. Seemed like they needed more staff to cope with the workload

Review 119:location, hotel looks impressive both inside and outside.

Review 120:Room had no view. Tiny television on top of a wardrobe. Paper thin walls - every movement, cough and sneeze, could be heard from our neighbours. In fact, thought they were in our room with us. No evening meal available due to other commitments of the Hotel catering.

Review 121:Friendliness of the staff.

Review 122:Far too hot!!!! tho the type of window opening was great to allow flow of air!

Review 123:Friendly and relaxed atmosphere - very clean! Good presentation of food and very enjoyable. Plenty of very willing and helpful staff. Nothing was any bother!!

Review 124:Everything was good

Review 125:Friendliness of staff. Excellent food. Comfortable beds.
