Reviews for Raise Cottage

Review 1:The fire in our room was lit when we arrived making it warm and toasty. Interesting and eclectic mix of furniture, books and general household items. Stimulating conversation during our stay.

Review 2:We stayed in the private rooms, they were cosy and clean, and the fires were roaring away when we arrived. (it was really foul outside!) Fabulous home cooked dinner too. Don't be fooled by Raise Cottage's bluff exterior, nor the owner's! they are both little gems inside.... ;0) B

Review 3:The howling gale coming in around the bedroom door and having to add coal to the fire every 2 hours, so maybe November in the middle of a storm was not a good time to visit.

Review 4:The views from the room and the open fire

Review 5:Curtailing my trip and leaving a day earlier than planned!

Review 6:I've stayed in a few bunkhouses across the UK and Europe and this is simply the best. Fact. The friendly atmosphere created by Host Phillip, its like a home from home. Warm, comforting and inviting. Its wonderful and the quality of food is just the glazed cherry on top of what is already a wonderful cake! I would have no hesitations about booking here again. Its now my go to accommodation when in the Lake District when not camping. Simply superb!

Review 7:Phillip is very welcoming and opens his cosy home with a roaring woodburning stove for all his guests. We arrived and had tea and home made cake. The room was lovely and comfortable and very clean. Phillip has a fantastic knowledge of the area for walkers or tourists and even made pancakes for all the guests for breakfast. Great value, I will definitely return!

Review 8:Very basic house. No frills whatsoever. Bathroom not handy to bedroom. Strange set up. Breakfast was bread only. Bit expensive for what you received.

Review 9:Picked us up in town as agreed. Let me stay until PackHorse arrived the next day as my leg was too sore to hike. Bedroom was nice. and clean.

Review 10:The stay was lovely.. our host Phillip was great and friendly.. he cooked an amazing veggie meal for my partner and myself at request. We would deffo be going back for a visit and would stay there again whenever we are back in the lake district x photo shows view from our bedroom x

Review 11:The place has shared showering and toilet facilities, which, in case there are many guest, can get a little crowded, but most of the times, it's fine. It's also clean as well.

Review 12:Philip is a great, welcoming host, who makes this places really nice. The accommodation is really clean and feels like a home. The open fire double room is spacious, the bed is comfortable, clean, and the view is marvellous. For breakfast, we received exactly what's in the description: freshly cooked strawberry jam with freshly baked bread, and it is excellent. In case you want more, you'll need to bring you own food.

Review 13:The shared bathrooms were clean but could do with a bit of an upgrade.

Review 14:If you are looking for a pansies-in-the-window box, silver service B&B right in the middle of town, this is not for you. If, however, the idea of a rustic B&B at the foot of the fells with an open fire to warm the room and sleep by and an honest, helpful and welcoming owner suits you then this is the place. Philip has 3 comfortable double rooms with lovely beds at Raise cottage, about 1.5 miles from Grasmere. He was very helpful, providing walking maps and recommendations as well as good hints for restaurants. It is too far to walk to town at night, but only 5 min by car. A great continental breakfast was available every morning in his kitchen, with fresh baked bread, home made jam and delicious tomato and oregano bruschetta.

Review 15:Nothing not to like

Review 16:Stayed at Raise Cottage for 5 nights from 7th Sept. The cottage is a wonderful place to stay if you want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of this area. A couple of miles outside Grasmere with good bus connections directly outside for those guests without cars. Personally welcomed by Philip the owner on arrival who is a great host. You are not treated as just guest, but one of the family. Breakfasts were wonderful, home made bread and freshly made strawberry jam every morning with a good selection of cereals and freshly ground coffee. Excellent wholesome food cooked by Philip by arrangement ( not processed just fresh local produce). Thanks Philip for an excellent stay

Review 17:Shared bathroom. We didn't mind at all but may put some off. Nonetheless they were clean and in good state.

Review 18:Great location and a wonderful quaint cottage. The double room was georgeous and cosy with an open fire lit perfectly for arrival. Stunning 360 views. Phil was a great help and pointed us to a fantastic walk for our needs and level (for us 'townies'). If you're doing Helvelyn then just start at the cottage! We'll be excited to see the place after the dorms are converted to private rooms and it will make it a proper nice cosy cottage.

Review 19:Philip made me feel at home :) The atmosphere of the cottage is very homely. This place is a good starting point for visiting North and south Lake District towns/villages. Cottage is right next to the Hellvelyn walk.

Review 20:- the host: extremely rude manners; we felt very unwelcomed at this place. our presence seemed to be merely tolerated, we were looked at as invaders into this man's castle. We never experienced such bad reception. - bathroom (think of camping bathrooms) shared with people staying in the dormitory (there is a male/female division, but a big group of male indian visitors didn't care, using the showers on both male and female sections) - thin walls and noisy guests: we couldn't have a good night sleep - breakfast: you are 'allowed' to have some bread and cereal from the host (but you will feel like you are stealing from him) - unless you bring a car, you are stuck if you want to go for dinner at the nearby pub; you can't walk on the road because there are no sidewalks, and the nearest pub (travelers lodge) is at almost 1h walking distance. - do yourself a favour: if you want to stay in the area, stay at the Travelers Lodge further down the road: they are very friendly, you can dine there, you have a bus stop right outside; if you use a car, they have parking space.

Review 21:- large, comfortable, and clean double bedroom (we booked the double bed confort room) - many towels available in the room - kettle and tea bags in the room

Review 22:The location was probably the only downside as I walked but that just can't beat the quietness one can get from such remote location. You can take a bus to eliminate this only downside though.

Review 23:The thick stone walls of the building, history of the building, the managing style of the hostel and the friendliness of staffs were all interesting and unusual. These were the elements that gave this place an unexplainable comfort to stay.

Review 24:Me and my girlfriend felt at home in this guest house, it was an amazing experience for both my self and her, the stuff wer amazing. The owner of the guest house was kind helpful and extremely respectful. I left the place feeling i want to stay more and that it self shows how grate the stay was for us.

Review 25:If you don't want to be greeted by some drunken people on your way to the room, and that is the owner of the place, avoid at all costs. Shame we had to spend a night here when there are many nice places to stay in the Lake District.

Review 26:Nothing.

Review 27:Phil is a top guy with a wealth of knowledge about the lakes and a knack for delicious home made breakfasts. The lemon curd was sublime. Also great location.

Review 28:The place is a little far from the center. Shower outside the room, but really clean.

Review 29:Great dining room with open kitchen. The host is really nice, cook himself amazing food, ground his coffee and play you the music you like. There is also a piano that one can play. The girls that help him out are really nice. We all ate together and had a great evening with them. At the end, the owner barely charged us for the evening meal.

Review 30:I spend 3 nights in Raise Cottage. The staf is amazing, Very friendly, and helpful. Philip is such a generous host he even helped me fix my hiking pants with his 110 years old sewing machine. The breakfast he serves with his homemade tomato paste and strawberry jam was devine. I very much recommend to stay there

Review 31:I want to say thank you to Philip for being such an amazing host.you have created a beautiful place. For me it felt like home. I'm blown away by your kindness and warm heart.

Review 32:What you want to know is that Raise Cottage boasts excellent location and pastoral surroundings, very close to Grasmere. Ambleside and all the walks and hikes around. The majestic lake Thirlmere is a only short walk/drive away. We stayed in the double room, which was was spotless clean and very comfortable. The fireplace was an added bonus and made us feel romantic and vintage. What you need to know is that Raise Cottage is a very unique place. It's not just sweet and comfortable, it also has a special welcoming and friendly spirit. The owner, Phillip, is one of the kindest and the most interesting people you'll meet. He is a walking treasure of local knowledge and sites and it is his personality that fosters the relaxing atmosphere in the cottage. From freshly homemade bread and jam to the cosy fireplace and music in the common room, we fell in love with Raise Cottage and look forward to come again soon.

Review 33:The owner is very kind and helpful, authentic cottage, good atmosphere, good view around the cottage. I would like to recommend to everyone.

Review 34:* Homemade bread and strawberry jam (with real strawberries) every morning!!!* Very clean and spacious bathroom!!! * Free laundry (I stayed for 6 days in early July, so having clean clothes to wear was a real relief)!!! * Abundant chances to meet experienced travellers and to hear exciting stories!!! * I went to lake district with little idea about where to go and Philip gave me a National Geography -class selection of landscapes where I can visit. He also took the risky weather and my under-equipped gears into consideration when giving these suggestions, which allowed me to make the most out of my stay yet to enjoy a safe trip. * The last but not the least, RC gives a touch of humanity. On the second day of my stay, Philip offered to lend me 25 pounds to buy "bus megarider" knowing I am out of cash (but he only knew me for one night); I was given a lift by new friends I met in RC on the rainy third day morning, and was able to travel around force crag mine and buttermere ; On the fourth night, Hennah, Philip's workaway girl invited me to join her and her friend to play jenga which was another wonderful night...not to mention the happy moments of making strawberry jam, vanilla sponge pudding and ice cream with Philip... and many dinners that he refused to charge. When being amazed at how much I gained from this place, I fairly doubt any other guest house.that I pay/paid more for can ever provide the same delightful experience. [Wish RC can stand forever~ever~ever] =D #IamVERYsatisfiedWITHmyCARE

Review 35:At £35 per head for B&B, we expected more from the shared shower/toilet facilities which are very, very basic. And certainly, we expected more for our breakfast which consisted of freshly made bread and freshly made jam. Delicious....but a cooked breakfast was what we expected. And served, rather than not self-service. And we did not expect to be sitting together with all the other guests at one table, youth hostel style. We felt that Raise Cottage is finding it hard to identify who they are and what they offer. We did not find it good value for money, knowing that for the same amount we could find conventional B&B not far from there, with en suite bathrooms and traditional cooked breakfast.

Review 36:Raise Cottage is really a Youth Hostel, not a B&B. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our "luxury double room" and shared spaces are clean if untidy.

Review 37:Warm welcome, great food plus excellent conversation with fellow travellers who were doing similar activities. Very flexible arrival and departure arrangements, brilliant when it comes to unpredictable arrival times or v. early departures.

Review 38:The dorms have quite many beds per room so air can get stuffy if the hostel is full. There are no shops or other services nearby so this hostel is best suited for customers who have their own vehicle. The facilities looked a bit more run down than in some other hostels we stayed in, but they were clean and functional.

Review 39:The informal atmosphere encourages guests to meet each other in the kitchen and living room. The kitchen is well equipped and the free wifi worked fine. We stayed in the dorm which was good value, especially as the breakfast (basic but okay, help yourself style) was also included. Private rooms are significantly more expensive but also nicely decorated and comfortable so there is a choice between two clearly different classes of accommodation. The location in the middle of Lake District is a great base for hiking. The house is right next to the main road but the windows are good so noise didn't disturb us inside.

Review 40:We don't mind basic. But if basic comes with rude and unwelcome staff, we do. We even left after ten minutes and went somewhere where they do value and welcome customers. These people have no clue how to run a business. The owner was no where in sight, a bunch of twenty something girls that clearly had no experience in dealing with guests, but more interested in using Raise cottage for themselves and their friends. We have seen many places, but this tops them all in rudeness, being messy and unclean. Great views though...

Review 41:The breakfast was "help yourself" but not to the eggs, bacon or sausages. WiFi no good upstairs.

Review 42:The owner, the staff and the atmosphere they create. The location is great. The cottage is lovely--very old and very authentic and it's kept absolutely clean.

Review 43:The owner (phill) was very knowledgeble with regards to the area and local amenities and events which take place throughout the year and he and his staff can't do enough to help and make your stay very welcoming.

Review 44:Boot walk sounds emerged from wooden floor which destroys sleep in the morning

Review 45:Cosy comfortable living room Homely atmosphere Warm and real countryside feel

Review 46:On our second night there were a noisy group of young people messing around in the hall ways, which disturbed sleep after a long day of walking. The shower was weak and went cold whenever a tap was turned on elsewhere. But it's a hostel, so these things are to be expected.

Review 47:Great value accommodation, located on the roadside just outside Grassmere and ideally located for several walks which start immediately outside the door! Bunks were comfortable and breakfast included home made bread, cereals and nice coffee. It suited our needs for a basic, no frills stay and the cottage is clean and the wood burner welcomes you in after a long day.

Review 48:Bit overcrowded and noisy. Got very little sleep in the dormitory room due to a very loud snorer and people up and down at the toilet all night.

Review 49:Easy to find right on the main road, good location and close to Grasmere. Facilities basic but warm and comfortable. Good value for the money.

Review 50:Friendly warm atmosphere. Great wood burning fire for extra heat. Good, varied breakfast and opportunity for evening meal. Area to leave boots and other walking gear.

Review 51:Nothing but good things to say.

Review 52:The owner/host was an extremely nice chap, he lit a fire in our room every night, and when he saw we had a small bottle of brandy, crystal brandy glasses appeared in the room. It's a hostel with a few private rooms so its refreshingly different from a lot other accommodation in Grasmere. In fact our room was more comfortable than lots of the other places we've stayed at. Breakfast is simple but really nice with freshly bakes break, homemade jam and marmalade and the kitchen is well equipped with a warm communal feeling. Can't wait to go back.

Review 53:There wasn't much that we didn't like. The showers aren't fantastic, but still adequate.

Review 54:Mixed with the bunkhouse it was different to usual b&b. But very homely and instantly welcome. Would definitely stay again. Beautiful location, perfect for exploring.

Review 55:The ambience and welcome. Philip is superb at making a home from home.He derives pleasure from giving and sharing.I had booked a dorm bed but took a private with delightful view , great mattress, Cotton bed linen..and a vase of fresh flowers! The weather was cold and variable. Very warm throughout my stay. Quality bread, free range organic eggs straight from his chickens, proper coffee , range of teas and milks. Bone china milk jugs and crockery. A woodburner stove takes prime position. Piano ..games and conversation. Missing it! Definitely going back. Probably stayed at over 100 hostels worldwide... in top 3! Enjoyed a delightful evening with my friends there (who were staying elsewhere)

Review 56:Location is not the best if you don't have a car. It's quite a long distance from town to cottage. And there is no path to walk. So i recommend this place for people with own car :)

Review 57:Lovely food. I didn't expect that for this price!! Excellent room with the fireplace where you can seat, eat something and speak with another guest.

Review 58:Philip and his two lovely volunteers from Canada made us feel at home from the very beginning. The location was beautiful, with a walk straight from the cottage up past a waterfall to Helvellyn (925m high) and the most breathtaking view.. wow! Then back to the Cottage to find the woodburner lit in the room (twin) by Philip and a peaceful night of rest.

Review 59:We came home late one evening after a walk to find that the host had lit our fires in preparation for our return. Our room was very comfortable and although this accommodation cannot be called luxury, it has buckets of rustic charm.

Review 60:Shower and toilet facilities were primitive. You can hear everything going on there from the rooms as there are no fully covering walls to block out any sounds. Very low pressure in the shower.

Review 61:Nice room and amazing bed.

Review 62:box of (presumably pet) ashes in the bedroom. Bathroom: only one shower for 10+ guests, rest of building was slightly scruffy and cluttered.

Review 63:comfortable, clean bedroom.

Review 64:very helpful owner. he made a mistake regarding the number of beds but gave us his caravan instead while he slept on the living room sofa. also cooked for us cause we turned up late and no pub served food at 10pm. the owner is an absolute legend !!! hospitality from a different era ...

Review 65:Stayed overnight in the place and was very convenient. The owner is really helpful and polite. The beds are wooden and hence, do not squeak at all compared with the metal beds you normally find in dormitories

Review 66:The host was interested in making my stay enjoyable and had excellent knowledge of the area. The location is excellent, as was the warm coal fire in my room. Thanks!

Review 67:nothing

Review 68:Log stove is epic, and phillip did us a great favour by providing a meal for us as we were backpacking over from borrowdale, very good of him. cheers

Review 69:A bit on the outside and hard to find after dark. Car is a must to move around.

Review 70:Friendly, informal and relaxed atmosphere. Owner with good knowledge of surroundings - worth to get his tips on where to go and what to see. Basic facilities but well maintained and kept clean. Warm and neat.

Review 71:The shower was a little weedy, but it was lovely and hot. The dorm was quite bright at night, so I slept with a T-shirt over my head... Sorted!

Review 72:The hostel owner Phillip was kind and welcoming. He made me feel very comfortable as a single female in a hostel. His friend Manuel was also incredibly helpful and attentive. The location was brilliant and easy to get to. Evening meals were lovely and Phillip was wonderful at catering for me with a gluten free diet. I was so grateful to him for making my Christmas so enjoyable. He even offered to lend me walking poles when I said I had lost mine. Free breakfast is included in the price of the stay which I think is a massive plus point! Would like to recommend to everyone. Only hope there is room for me to return :0)

Review 73:I got the impression they didn't want me there on the Sunday so I left. Also the photo is deceptive and this place is right on the side. The traffic kept me awake. The lake was nowhere to be seen. I booked and paid but didn't stay on the Sunday

Review 74:The cooking and shower facilities.

Review 75:A little more clarification about the nature if the shared facilities would help but phone up and speak to the owner too.

Review 76:What you need to understand about this place is that it is part of a hostel. Bathroom facilities are shared and are basic but clean. The owner is very helpful and friendly. The room we stayed in had a wonderful view of the valley, an open fire that was lit on our arrival and a cosy ambience all felt welcoming. The kitchen facilities are shared with the other people staying in the dorm rooms and has large sofas and a wood burning stove. If you enjoy other people's company and are happy to share these facilities then this is the place for you. We felt it was quite unique and much nicer than staying in a B and B. in this respect it is excellent value for money and the owner makes the stay special. We would highly recommend it.

Review 77:Friendly and helpful owner, cozy and homely dining-living room - large log burning stove was a centrepiece in the room giving off good heat morning and night. Double room welcoming with blazing coal fire on arrival and stoked up as required. Location of Raise Cottage ideal, quite wild and remote feel to it, but only few miles from Grasmere along main road. Not far to Keswick either, the other direction.

Review 78:a bit poor wifi range

Review 79:- fantastic host, - good facilites, - dog friendly, - niece cozy double room - with fireplace. - low level fast flying jets in the morning - AWSOME!

Review 80:The female bathroom was a bit messy.

Review 81:Philip is really kind and helpful. Homemade strawberry jam and bread as breakfast. The view around the cottage was breathtaking.

Review 82:Very cosy with the wood fire and the other people staying there. A great walk up to the mountains and tarns is right on the doorstep. Wonderful surroundings.

Review 83:BASIC ACCOMADATION

Review 84:LOCATION WAS 1.4 MILES UP HILL FROM COAST TO COAST WALK FROM ROSWAITE TO GRASSMERE I WOULD SUGGEST PARK CAR BEHIND BUS STOP IN LAYBY DOWNHILL OF RAISE COTTAGE ON A591 DRIVE UP TO RAISE SAVES HARD WALK UPHILL NO FOOT PATH.

Review 85:Location and transportation: Although the cottage is beside bus route, I waited for 2 hours at the bus stop outside the cottage but didn't meet a 555 bus come

Review 86:Nice and friendly owner Feel like back home Very authentic English village cottage with natural surroundings

Review 87:I liked all of it

Review 88:Very welcoming host and staff. I was invited to have a Lovely hot meal with host, staff and residents. And others were eating their own grub too. Typical walkers rest place. I had my own private room with towels and great bed, books and tea and coffee. Bed for my dog too. I shared the ablutions with other women. There are extra toiletries if you need them. The host stays up late if you Are a late weary arrival. A good location near grasmere for budget travel.

Review 89:Postcode takes you to the wrong location Follow the directions given dual carriageway and look out for the AA box, Don't expect a full English breakfast.

Review 90:Owner Phil was very welcoming and very knowledgable on local area. We would defiantly visit again an ideal location to discover the Lake District double bed very comfortable shared bathroom facility clean but basic.

Review 91:We had the deluxe double bedroom downstairs, bed was very comfortablehowever the open fire meant the whole room smelt of soot wish wasunpleasant as I am Asthmatic! Also no en-suite. Add states breakfast oftoast etc but didn't mention you had to make it yourself and wash upafterwards!! Children running up and down stairs while we in bed.. Onlya nail to lock the door from the inside and no way to lock when yu goout....Poor value for money.

Review 92:The bed WI-Fi access

Review 93:Bus service ends early and most of the time I caught the last bus to.the cottage when the staff were just having dinner. I felt slightly awkward as I was the only guest in the common area, watching them eating. But there is nothing more to complain about.

Review 94:Philip offered me free dinner with them for the first night. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Common area is very cozy. Well-equipped kitchen. Free breakfast with homemade bread and jam. Bus stop is just 2 min walk from the cottage. I missed the lastest bus on the second night during my stay and Philip is so kind to pick me up when it is all dark.

Review 95:It was a really welcoming friendly place especially for a solo traveller. Very tasty dinner in the evening with the whole Cottage sitting together and chatting. And you can help yourself to breakfast as early in the morning as you like, very convenient for an early start in the mountains.

Review 96:Bad distribution of power sockets in the room, 4km far from civilization, buses finish serving the area too early, room didn't seem to have been cleaned regularly.

Review 97:Owner is a bro, modest but good breakfast, good wifi. Very charming place.

Review 98:The first day I missed a bus and had to walk almost two hours to get there from grasmere. Actually you can call them to pick you up just my phone wasn't working.

Review 99:It's a little far from the town but you can find a 555 bus stop right in the front door. It's very quiet as to be the only house nearby. The owner and helpers there are really friendly, make some new friends there.

Review 100:We stayed in the double room and it was fab. Open fire and lovely views. It was nice to have a sofa in the bedroom too. It was a very cosy room and we were given a lovely welcome and advice on some local walks. Home baked bread and home made jam at breakfast. All at a very competitive price.

Review 101:boss is very nice!!! In spite of the inconvenient transport, the view around the cottage is excellent! it's more like a home, the owner would love to offer you a toast if you ask^-^

Review 102:Nail used as a lock for the ground floor double room Double room right where hostellers walked past & no privacy No TV or shower in the room No fried breakfast...only a choice of cornflakes or coco pops... ...hardly £65 worth of B&B to take my girlfriend for a romantic weekend away!

Review 103:Not a lot for £65 b&B

Review 104:Great place , great hosts , great location. Phillip really made me feelat home , helped me with maps and routes for my walking break .Defiantly stay there again 10/10

Review 105:The location is quite a walk from Grasmere but if you are coming by car this is fine - plus there is parking. The postcode is also a little iffy with satnavs - don't go down any tiny little country roads, stay on the A road towards Keswick.

Review 106:Philip is the owner; the kind of guy you would totally go for a pint with. Really homely feel about the place, he even leaves out soaps and stuff if you've forgotten yours!

Review 107:A very warm friendly welcome by the owner and staff. It's a very rustic and charming building with fantastic views over the fells. My girlfriend and I stayed in the double room which was well equipped and very comfortable. The room also had a great view. Highly recon end a visit. We will be back!

Review 108:It was really good place to be laid back. Just behind hostel, lots of green grass and perfact for trekking. Staffs are all helpful and friendly. Owner phillip was very responsible and he wil be always around you when u need help.

Review 109:It was like being in your own home, comfy and relaxing

Review 110:On arrival made very welcome; shown to a comfortable room; warm and cosy; plenty to eat at breakfast. Hostel in excellent position, with great views.

Review 111:Excellent place, lovely breakfast , rooms and location . Would recommend and would definitely go back

Review 112:Most of all we liked Phil's quiet friendliness.

Review 113:Welcome and friendly atmosphere.
