Reviews for Astala Lodge

Review 1:Owner very friendly and helpful. lovely room even though not much of a view. Rooms with sea views are double beds I think.. would not suit two friends..but check for sure. Felt relaxed and had comfortable sleep. Breakfast v good.

Review 2:We paid when we arrived which was grand but then we requested breakfast which was an extra 14 pounds it was only severed 8.30 - 9.30 which was to early so we didn't get breakfast so I think £14 should of been returned

Review 3:The lady was very friendly explained everything well room was warm and cosy a lovely view over the marina wld defo stay again

Review 4:Bed was not comfortable Room was not very warm Toilet was noisy Sink did not drain quickly Toilet was to close to radiator Breakfast could have been served between 8 an 10 not 8 till 9 Plus no room service Will not recommend it Pluse Was not offered a rebate on breakfast as my wife did not have any for 3 morning even though I had payed for the both of us for 4 morning. Yes I no it was up to the wife to have her breakfast but it would have been nice to have been offered a rebate

Review 5:Would have loved a refrigerator lol

Review 6:The view was amazing. The staff were friendly. The elevator was very convenient for luggage. The room was clean and very nice. Be back again

Review 7:Perhaps breakfast should have been included in the price of £185 for 3 nights.

Review 8:I thought our room (top floor overlooking the marina) was absolutely beautiful. Perfect location for exploring Bangor and Belfast. A great effort was made by Rochelle to put most members of our group in rooms next to each other!

Review 9:The bed pillows were flat. The floor boards were a bit shaky. Our room was at the rear with no view!

Review 10:It was close to the town centre. There is free car park nearby. The breakfast was value for money.

Review 11:no problems at all.

Review 12:lovely comfy bed, nicely decorated room, big telly, lovely and warm, very clean. food perfect with fantastic service, outside smoking area and friendly and helpful staff. really enjoyed our stay, quiet and peaceful.

Review 13:A warm welcome and helpful. Felt like family and the staff were always were there to help and make sure everything was ok. A very pleasant and hospitable stay for the two nights. Would definitely stay here again.

Review 14:The internet was very weak as was the satellite tv channels. Also had a last minute emergency which the staff didn't seem concerned with at all. Such a shame as they were lovely on our arrival.

Review 15:The breakfast was lovely as was the lady serving breakfast. The room was clean and comfy. Nice size bathroom.

Review 16:Pillows not comfortable. Curtains only partially cut out light from external hotel spotlights at night.

Review 17:Pleasant and efficient staff View from bedroom Spaciousness of bedroom and bathroom Décor throughout Proximity to places for evening meal Close to station for easy access to Belfast

Review 18:Astala Lodge is what it is, a slightly tired seaside hotel, but accepting what it is we enjoyed our stay.

Review 19:Great view of the marina. Close to the centre of town in a quiet location. The generous breakfast was served in a beautiful sun-lit dining room. We loved the delightfully nostalgic experience of what we Antipodeans would term a "typical seaside hotel".

Review 20:Carpet was a bit grubby and could do with a clean. Bed was a bit on the creaky side and we were woken up early by a very loud noise that seemed to come from some contraption outside our window. Room looked out on back view of other buildings.

Review 21:Good central location. Bed linen crisp and spotless. Overall room cleanliness very very good.

Review 22:Tiny room. Bathroom bin hadn't been emptied from last residence. The bed was on its last legs and the mattress was like a trampoline! Cheap and well used with springs coming through Terrible view of a back alley. No refund or anything offered. We left and didn't stay the night.

Review 23:Location was lovely

Review 24:The only thing I could say was we were at the back of the property which had a view of next door gavel wall next time I would definitely ask for a front facing room which has views over the marina but that was our fault for not having requested this.

Review 25:The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The property was very clean and we'll decorated throughout. Breakfast was excellent with a good variety on offer and very good value for money. Very central location to all amenities.

Review 26:Nothing I didn't like. All great :)

Review 27:Brilliant hotel, lovely owners, Modern and stylish rooms. Amazing views. Very comfortable beds :) great sleep. Will come again.

Review 28:The only complaint is that it would have been nice if the bar had stayed open a little later

Review 29:Very friendly staff, nice airy room and a comfy bed and breakfast was lovely just not enough!

Review 30:Staff very friendly rm 11 could do with curtains that close and also the bathroom needs a mirror and new grouping, the bar could also do with being open more u missed out on 8 thirsty people otherwise excellent

Review 31:Hardly a bad experience! Some little issues with the room, bathroom light switch outside the bathroom, no sockets at the bedside, surprisingly the mirror was missing from the bathroom, luckily I had shaved that morning and don't need to shave every day. Couldn't suss the wifi code so suggest you try getting online at a reasonable hour so you don't have to bother the landlady too late! Mattress could do with replacing too.. Breakfast staff were lovely food overall grand but would rethink the supplier for sausages

Review 32:The view from the room, the staff,

Review 33:Bed matress not comfortable :(

Review 34:Great host and great place to stay, room wasn't to big but suited for a night stay, clean nd modern looking...will be back again but get that champagne Rachelle.:):)

Review 35:The owner or manager was extremely welcoming and we had a problem with a bag left in Dublin and she allowed us to use her 'phone in an attempt to trace it. The young staff were attentive and helpful and breakfast was on time and very good.

Review 36:Two rooms booked, both shared a wall with the lift, noise woke us up every night. I was in one room top floor, so small not even room for a chair. Also bathroom had mold on ceiling and shower stall. Carpet filthy and stained. My granddaughter and her 17 month old son were in the other room which was just slightly bigger than mine with two beds crammed together. Also mattress so old and of poor quality you could see the springs even when the duvet was on, she had to use the pillows and an extra duvet to pad the mattress because springs were digging into her and leaving marks on her body. We didn't stay for the full 4 nights booked it was just too uncomfortable.

Review 37:The bedroom was small to say the least and I think that if it was a single bedroom it might just be big enough. We could not have stayed for a longer period in a room so small.

Review 38:The location was ideal for the purpose of our stay.

Review 39:Where do I start? The room was at the back with a lousy view over rooftops and run down houses. The room was very small - the biggest dimension was the height! The bathroom looked fairly modern but the shower stall had black mould all round the bottom and being a large chap I found it almost impossible to squeeze through the tiny door into the shower. It was an electric shower with very feeble water pressure. The room was overlooked but you could not draw the curtains because there was only one! There was a blind but the room was stuffy and pulling that down cut off the ventilation. The bed base was old and scuffed and dirty. The mattress was really diabolical - totally knackered. There were 4 of the thinnest pillows I have ever seen and even piling them all up was no use.The sheets though very clean didn't fit the base so I often had to get up and remake the bed. I hardly slept for five nights. There was some bizarre plumbing defect that meant there were really loud sloshing and gurgling noises - presumably when someone in a nearby room emptied a bath or basin. I mean REALLY noisy. There was a vent pipe from a lower part of the hotel that allowed sewer/drain smells to come into the room. Couldn't try breakfast because it was not served until 8 and I had to be on my way to work by then. Apparently it was only available until 9. Saw a lady when I arrived who showed me to my room and then I never saw any other member of staff even when I left. Needless to say I will not be staying there again

Review 40:The guest house seems to be nicely decorated and the towels and sheets etc were very clean. The room was properly serviced each day. I would imagine if you had one of the front rooms you would have a pleasant view over the harbour. Lift useful as plenty of stairs. Free wifi worked well

Review 41:We had a brilliant stay at Astala. The room was lovely, the location perfect and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. We plan to return in the future!

Review 42:One obnoxious guest - not the fault of owner or staff - just unfortunate that we were there at same time as him. Fortunately he only stayed one night.

Review 43:Friendliness of owner and staff. Convenience to restaurants and entertainment.

Review 44:Our room was at the back overlooking yards but as we where going to an event it was ok but had we booked for the views over the sea we would have been very disappointed.

Review 45:The room was very rundown, right next to a lift shaft and drain pipe which were both so noisy. Bed was extremely uncomfortable.

Review 46:The staff were extremely accommodating and let us into our room early so we could get ready for a wedding.

Review 47:Photos show front rooms, with view only. Option of room with a view not indicated on Booking.com. We didn't know we had to specifically request this. The landlady got a bit upset with us when we queried this. The bed is old and uncomfortable.

Review 48:The location was good - central, with nice view from front door.

Review 49:The room we received was very small and the view out the window from our room wasn't nice at all. We were told we could check out up until 11am. At 10:15am when we were still getting ready a cleaner tried to enter our room twice. Staff should be more aware of who has already checked out and who hasn't.

Review 50:The view from the front of the B&B is gorgeous. Staff were friendly and facilities were clean. Lovely one night stay.

Review 51:Bed a bit uncomfortable room too warm.. Didn't think there was much call for heat on..

Review 52:Great location friendly staff. Oh loved Darcy the wee dog :-)

Review 53:The cleaning wasn't up to 100% the bed had 3 wheels base off bed was all stained and dirty looking no mirror in bathroom for shaving toilet was rocky and plug was broke in bath

Review 54:I like where it was good spot for good view the food was brilliant always fresh and warm

Review 55:View from the room was poor.No fridge in the room.

Review 56:Location, staff, good size room & tv. Staff always responded well to any requests. Loved having 2 rooms with our private corridor.

Review 57:Very noisey. Guests coming in at 1.30am banging around. Could here everything. Didnt get a good night sleep for the 3 nights we stayed as it was over a weekend. Pity, as it really is a lovely place but didnt feel like a B&B.

Review 58:Location and lovely place to stay.

Review 59:The room was a little on the small side, but there was 3 of us in the one room. We kept the window blind down because there was no view and wasn't sure others could see in. Would definitely stay again but would be looking for a room at the front next time.

Review 60:The hotel was in a lovely location, so close to the town and shops and the main attraction of our stay, Pickie Fun Park. The lady that owned the establishment and especially the breakfast staff were so helpful and friendly.

Review 61:There were a couple of stains on the bottom of the bed sheet.

Review 62:The staff were excellent and let us check in 3 hours early as we were going to a friends wedding and needed to get ready. The view from our top-floor room overlooking the marina was breathtaking.

Review 63:I think it was a bit much £65 for just a bed and a small room with a view of roofs of houses not too mention wanting another £12 for breakfast

Review 64:Good location clean and tidy

Review 65:Owner was very rood when we arrived, therfore gettin off on a bad note, although it didnt deter me and my beatiful girlfriend enjoyin ourselves, later we found a bodily hair on windowsill nd springs wer hangin out of bed, makin for a noisey nd uncomfortable night,

Review 66:The location was excellent, looked lovely at night light up, even though the weather was unhappy,

Review 67:Nothing bad to report, a little overpriced is all... £65 for one night plus £6 for breakfast, and it's available 8am-9am only. So wave goodbye to your lie-in lol

Review 68:Lovely place to stay, incredible views and has a lift to all floors.

Review 69:The owner was lovely, very welcoming and professional. The rooms were nice, really well sized, lovely high ceilings. Our room had a great view over the marina.

Review 70:Room 6 - the mattress could do with being replaced. It was cheap to start with and is now damaged and not comfortable on one side. Nice spacious shower room starting to show signs of mould and lack of cleaning round the edges. Also quite a bit of noise from the lift in this room. Carpets on stairs and hall stained and showing dirt along the edges. I find it very frustrating when places with lots of potential which have had plenty money spent on upgrades let themselves down in the maintenance.

Review 71:Staff friendly and helpful Cooked breakfast was good Location is excellent

Review 72:The noise of the extractor fans in the next door room when people left the light on in their bathroom over night and some noisy guests coming back to their room in the early hours.

Review 73:Location with a great view over the marina. Large room with sofa and good wifi in room 10. Friendly staff who couldn't do enough to help in my 2 week stay.

Review 74:Great location overlooking the sea, owner very helpful, checked if we had been in the area before and on discovering we had not pointed out the walking route and gave advice on best places to eat which we appreciated. Room very spacious and clean. Good breakfast provided. We will stay here again when next in the area

Review 75:We stood for quite a few minutes waiting for attention on arrival. We finally phoned the hotel and when they answered, we were directed to "reception" !! at the back of the ground floor. Owner was not really pleased that we could not find the reception, on our own. Maybe signage would help!!

Review 76:Bed wasn't very comfy and pillows were flat. Bar in hotel was closed and showed no signs of being open. Chairs in dining room were a bit rickety.

Review 77:Hotel was ok for one night, clean but was trying to be boutique hotel, but not quite there. Staff very friendly, good breakfast but no choice of cooked only the works and thats it. a bit more thought and they would be there. Close to amenities and recommendations for restaurants were good. Great view over the marina from the dining room.

Review 78:The bed was so uncomfortable felt every spring. Had to keep duvet over it and cover myself with a bath towel.

Review 79:The place was very clean. Breakfast very good.

Review 80:We liked everything.

Review 81:Welcoming, friendly, comfortable warm & clean rooms. Very nice communal areas (breakfast room, lounge and bar) We enjoyed a very good & generous breakfast. There is also a Talking Lift, which was great as we had big suitcases. Yes, there is plenty of free street parking right outside the hotel. Best of all lovely friendly owners Trevor & Rachelle, and of course Mr.D'Arcy adorable, and very well behaved & contained four legged canine co-owner. Highly recommended. Great Location, opposite to the marina and close to the town. We really enjoyed our stay here, and would not hesitate to return.

Review 82:The bed was horrible. Slept in agony. Room tiny and not suitable for two people. Breakfast tasted old. Would not recommend

Review 83:Nothing comes to mind that was good.

Review 84:rooms were not very soundproof so noise from neighbouring rooms very clear. Difficult when people came in late at night. Disappointed that breakfast was £6 per person per night extra.

Review 85:Location was very good. Hotel was decorated in a modern style. Comfortable beds. Facilities were good.

Review 86:Arrogant Manager and unfriendly, uncaring staff. Refused us breakfast when we arrived and room not as portrayed in website. Mattress old and springs could be felt. Room very small.

Review 87:Absolutely Nothing

Review 88:There was no breakfast! We paid 65.00 pound for one night in a bed and breakfast... It should just be called bed. so kinda was disappointing as other b&bs are cheaper and come with breakfast.

Review 89:Our room was at the rear, with scaffolding! We would have preferred a sea view, but weren't offered a choice online. Also, the bed was a bit lumpy!

Review 90:Location and breakfasts.

Review 91:Breakfast wasn't included in our stay and was from 8-9am. Checkout by 10.30 on the day of departure with no late checkout option.

Review 92:Clean, quiet room. Good nights sleep. Private. Good service. Located on the marina within walking distance from Bangor town centre and lovely restaurants/cafe's on the marina

Review 93:A bolted but not sound-proofed connecting door to room next door meant I was woken at 3 a.m. when its occupant rolled home. I couldn't make the shower work. The whole room was uncomfortably stuffy even in May and even with a window open. The duvet was much too thick, and there was no top sheet so it was all or nothing. For a single person the room was quite expensive (£65 I think), and not to include breakfast within that price seemed cheese-paring.

Review 94:Location near harbour was delightful, enabling good view from front rooms (but mine was at the back / side!) Room was a good size.

Review 95:The accommodation was excellent. The people made us really welcomed and they were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good and the room was clean and spacious.

Review 96:We were allocated an adjorning room didnt like it as we could hear everything the people next door were saying we felt we didnt have any privacy the pillows on the bed were awful we had bfast each morning the first morning it was lovely the other two mornings it was very greasy the staff wasnt friendly they never came near us to ask was everything ok or if we wanted more tea I definitely wouldnt stay here again wasnt good value for money

Review 97:The location and the decor

Review 98:Mattress was very uncomfortable was old style with toggles that dug into me however I slept. This could be personal preference as my husband slept fine

Review 99:Good location. Staff were lovely. Room very clean with nice toiletries in bathroom.

Review 100:The only thing i wud comment on was the steps leadin up to the entrance of the building, someone with mobility issues may struggle, that was it everything else perfect

Review 101:The location was excellent walkin distance to everything and the staff were brilliant

Review 102:Didn't like how I couldn't have stayed any longer! Lol

Review 103:The guest house was wonderfully decorated and the staff Trevor in particular made me and my partner so at home and comfortable! I would definitely stay again!

Review 104:the bar closed early ( 10:30pm ) and they don't do evening dinner

Review 105:Great location overlooking the marina( but make sure you request a room at the front) , good choice for breakfast and a more than adequate cooked breakfast. Comfy clean rooms with en-suite. Trevor on reception was helpful and recommended a chinese restaurant just round the corner for dinner

Review 106:We had to come home lol. The bar could have been open longer, with maybe an honesty bar if the staff were leaving.

Review 107:Very friendly staff, nothing was a problem for the staff, comfortable room and relaxed atmosphere.

Review 108:Shower faulty and no maintenance staff available. Although there was a lift to the upper floors large amount of steps at front made access difficult.

Review 109:Excellent view of Bangor Bay. Large room and comfortable bed.

Review 110:I didn't like that the place was quiet and no one was about could of had entertainment or someone at the bar

Review 111:Room was great and was good that you could go and come as you please

Review 112:The bed was too soft for me, but that is personal preference!

Review 113:The staff were pleasant, welcoming and polite. With lightening internet and comfortable clean rooms I'd happily recommend staying here.

Review 114:walls were a bit thin between rooms

Review 115:Nice park and walking trail right across the street; restaurants also within easy walking distance. Parking available right out front as well.

Review 116:Nothing to dislike!!

Review 117:Friendliness of staff and homely feeling. Children made welcome and rochelle , the owner, took time to explain all house rules and fire escape details. Lovely lady!

Review 118:We were only given one set of keys but there were two of us. The breakfast is available between 8.30 and 9.30... A bit early for the weekend but I suppose you can't please everyone.

Review 119:Our room was quite small and at the back of the building but the bathroom was great and the room (8) was quiet.

Review 120:nothing

Review 121:everything in this b&b is perfect, the location, staff, cleanliness. we visit bangor quite often and always try to book the astala,as it is the best in the area, well done astala

Review 122:The only let down for me personally was the breakfast. The sausages were tasteles and of very poor quality.I think if the cooked breakfast was slightly tweaked it would make this guest house one of the best in Bangor.

Review 123:We'd stayed the previous year in a smaller room at the back of the guest house and were completely surprised to be given a large room with a sea view this time. It was so bright and airy. Would love this room again if we book again.

Review 124:Really enjoyed our weekend break. Staff very accommodating. Rooms very clean & comfortable. View from guest house beautiful right on Marina. Near shop, bars& restaurants. Going back next year

Review 125:Very unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties due to the steps at the entrance. These are carefully not shown on the photograph.

Review 126:Room and views as above

Review 127:We booked a week in advance of our arrival date. I had requested a quiet room with a view for my mum who is a light sleeper, unfortunately we didn't get that as it was a busy time of we booked.but we were told that were getting a quiet room. That was not the case. There was a tank that made a loud noise for up to an hour every few hours which if you couldn't sleep would keep you awake all night long. We were then woken by loud guests arguing in the bedroom next door from 2 pm till early hours. Walls are paper thin. There were three long hairs on the bed when we entered. So wasn't the cleanest. So as I said you get what you pay for.

Review 128:Ideal location and great views of the marina.

Review 129:Bangor. A very rundown seaside town.

Review 130:lovely view from front of lodge, unfortunately our room looked out over derelict house and garden, not a pretty sight.bango

Review 131:Uncomfortable bed and awful knocking noise when flushing toilet and turning the tap on in bathroom ! Also a few cobwebs in bathroom and bedroom !

Review 132:Good location and peace and quiet. Large bedroom and lovely view from our room of the marina ! Great breakfast and friendly staff !

Review 133:The coffee at breakfast!

Review 134:I arrived early as I was going to a wedding for the day. I needed somewhere to get changed so Eva let me use an already made up room. She then agreed to move my things into my room once it was ready. Very accommodating and friendly.

Review 135:reception needs some sort of bell to alert that people are there, manager went through things a bit too throughly eg that the 0 in the left would take us to ground floor.... heating was on 27/7, no view within the room onto to a brick wall

Review 136:bnb was beautifully decorated room was lovely very clean great location
