Reviews for YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe

Review 1:I didn't like the black mildew and mould on the walls of our twin room

Review 2:Comfy beds, friendly , efficient staff, great setting, very inexpensive, well equipped.

Review 3:There is nothing not to like

Review 4:Free parking. Great value food, drink and accommodation. Location. Facilities. Staff. Second stay and will stay again, would recommend without question.

Review 5:We found the boiler for the central heating a little noisy at night, did not go off till after 12

Review 6:location is fantastic and could not ask for better. The staff were very pleasant and always helpful. Will definitely return.

Review 7:The warm welcome and friendly staff. One of them moved a big toy from one room to another so our children could use it. The games for children. Cooks providing V vegan food at short notice. Bargain price.

Review 8:In my particular one-night stay there were snorrers and coughers in the large, 12-bed bedroom. This is obviously a matter of bad luck, but it made for a very poor night's sleep. Hostels with this many beds should give a greater discount as it really does markedly worsen the experience.

Review 9:Absolutely beautiful and unique building in a beautiful area. Friendly, helpful staff.

Review 10:It was my first time staying at a YHA and was pleasantly surprised. Excellent location, friendly staff, many facilities & great choice at breakfast.

Review 11:At £59 for a twin room for one night the price is SKY HIGH. What ever happened to YHA budget accommodation? Room very basic, one bunk, a cupboard and a sink in the corner. Could get a half decent BnB for the same price. Shame as cleanliness, staff etc all very good.

Review 12:Beautiful house, beautiful location. Very clean, impressed with facilities, there seemed to be a shower or toilet around every corner! Staff very friendly and efficient.

Review 13:Nothing to say here accept maybe more parking needed

Review 14:It's easier to say what's not to like but overall it's great value for money in a great setting

Review 15:The pillows need to be bigger if only one is provided. The kitchen needs more cups or a ban on people taking them to their rooms. Drying room could do with being bigger .

Review 16:Excellent location, beautiful quirky building. Friendly, helpful staff and a nice kitchen.

Review 17:Horrible experience. it's very expensive (240 £ for 2 days) for a tiny "family room" : 5 meter square for 4. People are slamming doors until 2am and when people take shower at 6 am you feel they are in the room !

Review 18:Grasmere village. It is the only raeson the cotation is 4 if not it would be 0

Review 19:The price was very expensive for the facilities. The kitchen did not have enough mugs - partly because people took them into their bedrooms I think and it was a squish in the morning for breakfast. The toilet on our floor sometimes did not flush.

Review 20:The staff were extremely helpful and the food was good for our evening meal.

Review 21:My first impression with this hostel is a very friendly receptionist who recommended us many good places to visit. The shared bathroom is in fact quite private because there're many of them, so you don't have to queue up or wait.

Review 22:The toilets are smelly. More hooks in the shower rooms please. The chair is a good idea - thumb up for that. The bedrooms are colder than the corridor and any other places.

Review 23:The service is efficient and professional. I felt welcomed and treated professionally, comparing to other YHA I've stayed in. The house is great! Pretty. The location is good, convenient. The leasure rooms are nicely set. The kitchen facilities are great! I would love to go back again.

Review 24:Nothing

Review 25:Food great, bed comfortable great nights sleep and toilet and showers clean water hot. Staff very helpful. Thank you for making our stay enjoyable.

Review 26:I would recommend taking some earplugs as some guests like getting up very early and when they're in the room above you they can keep you awak from the early hours. That coupled with some rather excitable plumbing meant that we didn't sleep much beyond 5:30am.

Review 27:The hostel is in an beautiful location and the price was just as pleasing. We paid an extra £5 each for breakfast and it was worth every penny and more. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we would happily stay there again.

Review 28:Carpets need replacing, behind and side of the beds needs to be hoovered. wifi does not work in the rooms. We went out at 9:30am, came back around 7pm. Found my room unlocked, they came in to empty the bin and clean but they forgot to locked it after. Anyone could have come in and get my things. Luckily nothing was stolen. Reported it and they said they will make a report and apologised.

Review 29:There are lots of toilets and shower room and it is clean. Breakfast is good.

Review 30:Wifi was only in the lounge and not in the rooms, only alcohol purchased from the hostel was allowed to be consumed in the common areas so couldn't bring our own

Review 31:great location, lovely Victorian mansion converted into a hostel, the kitchen was well stocked with utensils and cooking facilities, staff were friendly and helpful.

Review 32:Just stayed here for 3 nights with a good friend, we were pleasantly surprised in how friendly and helpful the staff were, how clean and what choices of breakfast was available. We ate the set menu on 2 occasions and l would say what fantastic, tasteful food it was.

Review 33:one of the guests started packing (lots of zipping and rustling of bags) at 6.20 a.m.(albeit in the dark) and continued until 7.15 a.m.

Review 34:friendly helpful staff, cleanliness

Review 35:i didnt like toilet in the morning after all the ramblers and cyclists had gone. as we woke up later because we were there for sight seeing in the villages and museum going rather then the hardcore stuff. people were a little inconsiderate unlike we were staying up later then them and acting like mice. they were up bangingand clattering from very early and by the time we woke up the toilet was an absolute state had to hold our breath and only use the unblocked one. HOWEVER the staff got it sorted pretty quickly after and we didnt have the same horror the second morning. (we were up at 9 which isnt at all late so they were banging loudly from 5:30/6ish)

Review 36:how cheap it was, fantastic games room, really relaxed and well looked after.

Review 37:The room was to warm, however so like it that way after a day on the fells!

Review 38:Took my 4 year old here for the night. It was a two min walk to the park in Grasmere. The food was good, kids eats free and get a pudding so for £7.50 for both of us to eat was fantastic! Nice play room where you can sit and have a beer.Nice staff.

Review 39:I was on my own, had been to ambleside yha week before. The staff were not as chatty or friendly at grasmere. The kitchen to make own food is in a sep annex, even making a cup of tea a treck so didnt use it.stripping bedding ok but having to take downstairs to put into linen bins a bit old fashioned. As a sole traveller ambiance, lack of friendly staff and sep kitchen and linen put me off, ambleside much better for sole travellers.

Review 40:The position of the youth hostel is fantastic, room sizes coal fire lovely. Very close to grasmere for lovely walks and shops etc

Review 41:We had a great weekend. The hostel is in an excellent location for walking in the hills. The communal areas have a lovely atmosphere especially with the open fire.

Review 42:The fact that I had to leave!!

Review 43:The very friendly and accommodating staff really make this special place extra special. The wonderful location, great food and facilities are second-to-none. The YHA is beautifully clean and presented and very homely. Its a real treat to stay there and the free wi-fi is just a wonderful bonus, as is the access to free locks - I just cannot praise Butharlyp Howe enough. l

Review 44:Heating in the room wasn't working on arrival - it was a very cold day. It wasn't fixed until we came back in after dinner and weren't offered an alternative room although some were empty

Review 45:The location of this hostel is fantastic - easy to walk into the village in the evening and stunning walks for the day from the front door.

Review 46:Too warm, kitchen facilities in a separate building, not enough plug sockets (none close to the bed as is the case in most hostels), Wi-Fi only works in lounge, many doors banging loudly during the night which disturbed my sleep

Review 47:The hostel was clean and comfortable and had maintained much of its original character

Review 48:No negatives.

Review 49:A large, comfortable Victorian house, friendly and helpful staff, very good facilities for walkers (big drying room , for example), good food and generous portions. Excellent value-for-money accommodation in a wonderful location for enjoying the fells.

Review 50:Not much, rooms could have done with a dusting and more thorough hoovering. Otherwise no problems

Review 51:Lovely big old building, nice and warm, good showers with plenty of hot water no matter what time of day. Best of both worlds - prepare own food or buy in cafe. Saw a badger roaming in grounds at 1am and red squirrels - lovely. :-) Really easy going. Comfortable stay and will definately stay again. 2 mins walk down to Grasmere shops and eateries.

Review 52:Food was OK, not exceptional.

Review 53:Friendly, always helpful staff, excellent walking centre with superb drying room, very comfortable, facility for self-catering.

Review 54:A stones throw from the village and in the heart of the beautiful Lake District. Staff are welcoming and the facilities are top notch for this type of accomodation.

Review 55:Slightly damp smelling rooms

Review 56:Location Helpful friendly staff Food in dining room Very comfortable lounge Space for children to play/Halloween story telling activity.

Review 57:Not much, only little things i.e: We were in the annex and had only one socket in our room. This limited our ability to recharge phones etc /use hairdryers etc. The socket actually failed when we tried to use the hairdryer so we had to dry hair on the public landing (we mentioned to the guy on reception who said he'd get the electrician to take a look at it); also my son got locked in the shower which was a nasty moment for him!

Review 58:Near proximity to village and general setting which is pretty spectacular, even in heavy rain! Within walking distance of NT property Allan Bank - as a family with young teens we spent around 4 1/2 happy hours here on a rainy day despite being overrun by toddlers!

Review 59:No real ale on tap. Car parking on site can be difficult at busy times. My trekking gloves went missing from the drying room. I doubt there is a fool proof way of monitoring what goes in and out of the drying room. The above did in no way affect the pleasure of our stay. We will be back for more.

Review 60:Knowledgeable and friendly staff team. Meals at breakfast and evening were great value. Good showers and dry room. A relaxed atmosphere throughout.

Review 61:Having to leave at the end of the stay!

Review 62:Staff were generous with their help and were ready to supply extra bedding, and items for the kitchen, also advice for routes, places to go, maps etc. Hostellers were considerate and friendly and family groups over half term were a joy to be around. You might improve your stay with your own scouring pad and knife sharpener, but that's all.

Review 63:A trip down memory lane as I last visited the location in 1977. Very friendly welcome. Pleasant self catering kitchen. Excellent price for staying in a beautiful house.

Review 64:it needs some updating and you had to go outside and round the house to get to the self catering kitchen which was a bit cramped for the size of the hostal. As a single walker I would avoid school holiday season as the hostal is very popular and could be noisy.

Review 65:A large hostal, which was in a good location for the grasmere. Lovely sitting room, good restaurant and comfortable, clean bunks. Great drying room!

Review 66:Room was far too hot and window only opened a small amount. No bedside light for one of the bunks (it was behind the wardrobe) We were first into breakfast but the sausages looked if they had been cooked hours before, even the eggs were made freshly.

Review 67:The Staff were wonderful, very helpful cheerful and polite. Location

Review 68:the beds were very hard.

Review 69:brilliant central location, very friendly staff, good breakfast. the garden and games room make this a good place to stay with children.

Review 70:There was a bit of a smell in the kitchen. No free wifi

Review 71:An excellent location. Beautiful countryside house and surroundings. Can have a breakfast outside while enjoying a stunning view. Overall, the place was clean with plenty of toilets and showers. The fridges in the kitchen were really cold.

Review 72:Staff were friendly & very helpful, room was clean, comfortable & all facilities good quality & clean. A very good nights sleep in a stunning location!

Review 73:Our room had black mould in the windows and skirting boards. The room smelt terribly of smelly feet or similar. The decor in some areas was shabby.

Review 74:The location is beautiful and very close to Grasmere village. The staff were very welcoming. The family room was fantastic for our young kids and the fact we could sit with them enjoying a glass of wine in the evening, even better. The breakfast was very good and value for money.

Review 75:The room was not as clean as it could have been. Vacuuming around the perimeter of the room would have been great! And (not so nice) boogers on the wall beside one of the bunks.

Review 76:The location was excellent for hiking and close to the village. It's a beautiful area. Staff were very helpful.

Review 77:Found the bedroom rather hot. Having to walk outside to self catering kitchen during heavy rain!

Review 78:Friendly and helpful staff ,lovely building and setting, good facilities generally.

Review 79:The people in our room were extremely inconsiderate and made it impossible to have a decent sleep.

Review 80:Really cool building, great staff, spacious rooms, good laundry facilities.

Review 81:Choice of food for evening meal.

Review 82:Location, comparatively cheap, breakfast, all night key (husband finishing trail race very early morning), facilities, grounds, shower room.

Review 83:Lack of kettles Cleanliness of some of the toilets, smelt of urine toilet brushes need replacing regularly

Review 84:comfy beds seating areas Very pleasant staff value for money very close to Grasmere Close to local amenities Beautiful location Excellent drying facilities

Review 85:We had a family and were stationed in the adjoining building, so wifi access was nonexistent. Had to haul our baggage up narrow stairs and hallways. Toilets in another part of the building

Review 86:Location was brilliant, price was good for the area, food was very reasonably priced.

Review 87:room a little stuffy on arrival - had to open the window.

Review 88:staff helpful. Tea and coffee in the lounge lovely. Love table football.

Review 89:We were at the hostel during the recent rain storm - flooded roads etc - and the staff made our enforced stay very enjoyable and comfortable.

Review 90:Grasmere is Fab location to explore and YHA location is Fab location

Review 91:Car parking bit of an issue.

Review 92:Lovely to have beds made up. Excellent breakfast and good local ale available.

Review 93:Cooking facilities, good .tv lounge good.

Review 94:The fact that you can get there as late as 11pm. It's closeness to local shops and of course it's closeness to the hills.

Review 95:Just a poor internet signal

Review 96:Perfect location, good staff, excellent breakfast . Perfect value for this money

Review 97:Slamming doors and bad smells from The Wcs throughout corridors and halls

Review 98:Comfy bed and very good, hot shower.

Review 99:Great service as normal

Review 100:Dirty toilets seat needs replacing dirt/dust on the floor. Showers need a good clean

Review 101:Friendly staff breakfast good
