Reviews for Durker Roods Hotel

Review 1:the room is slightly misrepresented by the website which shows a fantastic period room but this is not the case and instead looks like a standard hotel rooms. the hotel is also located within a housing estate agent and not in a picturesque location as suggested by the website. I understand that the best photos/rooms are used in adverts however the difference between the two is fairly considerable. Also although the staff were not rude they were fairly indifferent to our presence, having to wait a while to be checked in and out and also during our breakfast the waitress was less than polite and we were waiting a while to be served. Also within our room the shower was broken and the TV remote. I would not return to this hotel for the above reasons as many of the small issues could have been forgiven had the staff been a little more polite and helpful. however our hotel room was reasonable prices at £80 per night.

Review 2:The room was very comfortable with lovely bed and the village in which the hotel was located was very pretty. The room was also very clean. And price of room very reasonable.

Review 3:Staff very unfriendly. Looked grumpy and couldn't even manage a 'good morning' when passing in corridor on christmas day. The bar was shut by 8:30pm. Breakfast service was poor. Worse by far: trying to gain entry @10:45pm in pouring rain and cold winds, the front door locked with no external light.

Review 4:Room poor, nothing like the photograph, very basic. Staff could not understand English so no directions to the room. No response to prior email contact. Check out poor, said card declined and would only go through when pressed to try again as funds were available and card was in good order

Review 5:Location and breakfast good

Review 6:I had been upgraded to the bridal suite which was nice but the TV was very small in the corner and didn't work. The carpeting definitely needs a bit refurbishing.

Review 7:It was nice staying in an old manor house. Felt more like a home than a hotel. Staff could have been a bit more cheerful but they were pleasant. The food in the bar was excellent as well as the free breakfast. Beds were comfey.

Review 8:Wifi kept dropping in Room 27 told a booster is available from reception & totally wifi upgrade due Jan 2016 to solve this slight issue

Review 9:Friendly staff good food free parking

Review 10:When I first checked in, I was given a small, cold, room on the top floor. There was no wi-fi connection in the room. The receptionist later gave me a device to improve wi-fi and placed me in another (ground floor) room.

Review 11:The breakfast room was bright and cheery, the server was pleasant, and the meal was good. The bar was comfortable and my second room was spacious and warm. The staff helped me to resolve wi-fi difficulties.

Review 12:Wonderful staff, this was our second visit and we will certainly stay there again and recommend The Durker Roods to others if the happen to be in the area.

Review 13:Thin walls, could hear both neighbours and rooms across the corridor. Appreciate wedding party was on and guests do tend to be louder after a drink or ten!

Review 14:Friendly staff, nice but basic room

Review 15:On arrival our booked room was not available, had to wait 1 hour for room to be prepared. On departure the booked room rate was overcharged by £30 / day.

Review 16:Good location.

Review 17:Left very important papers in room, when phoned to see if they had been found member of staff on phone very very offhanded. How could we know that that member of staff was overseeing an event at the hotel. Didn't even try to be helpful we had to phone back after member not keeping promise to phone back

Review 18:Member of reception staff that is pregnant. Very very helpful and a great asset to the hotel

Review 19:Shower pressure bit low but just ok

Review 20:Was able to relax very easily had bar meals and breakfast which portion and quality were excellent and staff very attentive even though they had wedding receptions to contend with.

Review 21:My only drawback was trivial! No natural yoghurt or skimmed milk.

Review 22:The location, staff and cleanliness were excellent the staff were helpful and friendly always a smile to be seen.

Review 23:Friendly staff, good sized room. Always a choice of two real ales. Good breakfast in pleasant surrounds. Only a short walk into Meltham centre. Plenty of free parking. Good restaurants in the centre.

Review 24:Room, though comfortable wasn't as illustrated in thumbnail picture on website as illustrated room was one of a kind and was taken. 2 drinks bills charged to my account and were someone elses. This was sorted out but check your account.

Review 25:Lovely hotel, very friendly staff and good food.

Review 26:Got no sleep AT ALL! Thanks to other guests pounding on doors and windows at 3am to get back in the building - it was meant to be a relaxing evening but we were very disappointed with the noise.

Review 27:The room was lovely as was the breakfast

Review 28:The only problem was that the toilet seat in our bathroom (room 2) was loose and, naturally, made using the toilet difficult and uncomfortable. Reported this right away but still not fixed during our stay.

Review 29:All the staff were very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay and the choice of breakfast and other meals was very good and well presented. The hotel and gardens were well kept and it was a very pleasant and comfortable place to stay.

Review 30:WiFi did not work in the bedroom. Bedroom rather basic and a little dated.

Review 31:Convenient location for what we needed. Reasonable evening meal in the bar. Staff helpful and friendly. Public areas well maintained. Very good value for money for a one night stop over.

Review 32:Service was slow staff forgot what you ordered after they walked away. Food/Dinner was expensive for what you got.But breakfast was fine. Food prices increased after seven pm and room prices increased Friday evening for the weekend. I perhaps could understand this if the Hotel was full, but it wasn't.

Review 33:We usually pick this hotel because it's in the right place for our trip.

Review 34:Breakfast was very disappointing. Full English breakfast with no eggs?!?! Bacon cold, all food very poor quality. Room was nothing close to the room in the pictures. Shower not working and dirty. And many more things. Very disappointed.

Review 35:Location

Review 36:Wifi signal very poor and certain aspects of room dissappointing...bathroom dimly lit...unsecure shelf above sink causing toiletries to slide off...crack in sink...toilet seat loose...inadequate hot water pressure from shower..

Review 37:Friendly staff and good surroundings...lovely breakfast and great location.

Review 38:Breakfast nice but also a little dated, little changed from when went on holidays as a child 40 years ago!!

Review 39:Beautiful house , decoration a bit dated , could be simpler and nicer lovely grounds , situated in beautiful part of yorkshire

Review 40:Check with the hotel before booking to see if there is a wedding on. We did not check and subsequently became part of the wedding party. The hotel had no idea who were guests and who were not. The hotel bar area became busy with rowdy / drunken wedding guests who did not want to queue at the bar in their wedding function room so came into the bar area where hotel guests were relaxing. We had booked a table reservation in Oscars restaurant. It was quiet in there, yet the service was poor due to low staff numbers and those staff that were there helping with the wedding. The food, when it arrived was minimal, certainly not enough for man’s evening meal. Chips, veg or potatoes were an extra cost and as we were not told this, when we asked for them it took so long for them to bring them out we had already finished our meal when they finally arrived. The staff in the restaurant were polite however I suspect they were either new staff or being pulled from the restaurant to the wedding and were too busy.

Review 41:The hotel is lovely. The lady on reception was polite and helpful. The room was clean and beds were comfy. There was plenty of clean towels and extra bedding. Shower room clean and provided a small supply of shampoo’s and soaps etc. The wi-fi was a little hit and miss but I think that was due the signal and not so much a problem with the hotel.

Review 42:we arrived there was a wedding on asked for a quiet room given 26 bottom floor which had carpark right outside window kept awake until 1 with people talking outside cars revving up also wedding guests children running up & down corridor until early hours then entering room Next to us shouting banging about etc

Review 43:Staff very personable and helpful. Excellent quality restaurant food with perfect service. We a very good value room rate and had the Wednesday evening 3 courses and a bottle of wine offer. Location good for this part of Yorkshire.

Review 44:The room was clean, however the 2 nights we spent with you i didnt sleep very well at all, this was due to the uncomfortable mattress it was very lumpy

Review 45:The staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 46:This is an old building& there was water damage to the corner of the room. Discoloured wallpaper & part of the trunking had come down exposing cables. I felt a little cold after taking a shower so turned the radiator on unfortunately the heating does not appear to be on in August.

Review 47:I liked the location, close to Holmfirth & the Pennines handy for walking or biking. The staff were very pleasant & helpful There was a large TV in the room with plenty of Freeview channels, which you don't get in some cheaper hotels.

Review 48:The other guests were noisy. The water pressure was very low, it took 20 minutes to fill the bath.

Review 49:The staff were helpful & friendly. The breakfasts & bar meals were delicious. The area was lovely.

Review 50:We had 2 twin rooms as requested but they were on separate floors. Would have been nicer if they were next door to each other.

Review 51:The rural location, the look of the hotel and its grounds.

Review 52:The bathroom light took a long time to become bright enough to have a shower. The decor was a bit old fashioned within the hotel.

Review 53:The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The room sizes were nice and big and the bed was very comfy.

Review 54:The bed was extremely disappointing. It was lumpy, full of springs that could be very easily felt and the mattress was very thin. No reason for this as far as I can see and very easily rectified. The bathroom was lovely but spoilt by a cheap shower curtain rather than shower screen and absolutely no power from the shower at all. Toiletries Were sparse, Would Be Better In Bottles Rather Than sachets.

Review 55:Location is lovely, nice e and peaceful. Breakfast was great and we were well looked after.

Review 56:Breakfast was not very good - poached egg tasted of vinegar, one 7g of butter inadequate. Bed mattress not up to par - springs over prominant and very uncomfortable. The lack of a lift means the 3rd floor room was not very satisfactory.

Review 57:The gardens were delightful

Review 58:Room smelled of paint. No mini bar tatty furnishings. Not dirty but not very clean. uncomfortable pillows. poor telly. Bar closed before 11. Staff okay but not very friendly

Review 59:Breakfast was nice. Attractive old building from the outside

Review 60:Only thing that could be faulted was that I thought it was a touch pricey although everything else was top notch! I probably wouldn't of paid what I did if it wasn't for a friend getting we'd there.

Review 61:Pretty much everything was top dollar. The room was pricey but the price of drinks/booze was very reasonable in all fairness

Review 62:Just needs updating, the bath side was loose and the towel rail came of when towel placed on it, tea tray dated/tired.

Review 63:Plenty of car parking. Easy walk into town. Lovely garden to sit in the sunshine and enjoy a drink after a busy day

Review 64:The shower in our room needed a bit more water!

Review 65:Excellent staff very helpful and cheerful. Lovely breakfast well cooked, comfortable room. We enjoyed the visit a lot.l

Review 66:It would have been nice to have the option of fresh fruit at breakfast, along with a greater choice of cold items, such as yoghurt.

Review 67:The staff were pleasant and helpful. Cleanliness was good and the hotel and grounds are lovely. Choice of freshly cooked hot food at breakfast was excellent.

Review 68:Nothing we didnt like just a shame there were not more guest in the bar and restaurant on the Saturday night

Review 69:lovely period hotel with really friendly staff, nice bar serving choice of real ale which went down well with the men, lovely evening meal food was excellent quality. Rooms fresh and beautifully clean, highly recommended

Review 70:Our daughter was married at the Durker Roods Hotel. We came for a couple of days before and after the wedding. The staff was wonderful and attentive. Breakfast was awesome. The rooms were comfortable. We so enjoyed our time there!

Review 71:One of the staff who seemed to take control was brilliant all others were annoyed we were even there. The bed must be the oldest I have ever slept on and sooo uncomfortable it completely ruined the stay, it was the cheapest mattress you could buy

Review 72:the building was lovely but the interior was in need of a cash injection

Review 73:All staff were lovely and welcoming and helpful. Vegetarian breakfast was one of the best I've had in a hotel. We booked a Superior Room which was very spacious with a lovely view of the grounds.

Review 74:The directions of how to get there from the Internet were far too drawn out, there was much easier routes.

Review 75:Good reception on arrival. A lively wedding going on. Our family visited and were made to fee welcome. Comfortable bed and clean throughout. Lovely garden and lots of walks.

Review 76:only one member of staff in the bar/restaurant did make things a little, although he was attentive and worked his best he was a bit stretched at times

Review 77:Clean, Comfortable, pleasant staff and a decent meal

Review 78:We liked everything. We just thought the price for Snowie was a bit high

Review 79:The room was good the food was good The staff were excellent Overall. For Us EXCELLENT

Review 80:Tucked away amongst housing that has since been built up around, the Durker Roods Hotel is an oasis of tranquillity offering excellent food and accommodation at very competitive rates. Highly recommended.

Review 81:The bedside lamps didn't work and the light in the bathroom was too dim to apply make-up. There were no bedside tables to put a drink or glasses on.

Review 82:Good hotel for a short stay with a very good restaurant, excellent quality food and the 2 for 1 offer was extremely good value. Comfortable & clean room. Staff very helpful and friendly. Would stay again if in the area.

Review 83:The wifi isn't worth trying.

Review 84:The Jacuzzi bath in the Executive room was lush. This room has a four poster which makes watching the TV awkward, but then I suspect most users of this room don't watch TV?

Review 85:the fact the toilet in my mum and dads room had been used , and not flushed and cleand ready for our stay !!!! manager came looked took photo said sorry and flushed. our loo had mop head remainds on ours ! . thay took £30 off my bill . need i say will not stay here again and will tell freinds and family not to either .

Review 86:staff at breakfast seamed freindly

Review 87:Mix up on Friday evening with meal, bread in the salad. The chef that night and the person in the bar did not seem to understand celiac disease. On positive side I was not charged for meal and given a complementary glass of wine. I suggest that the hotel looks at its gluten free options and is aware of the contents of meals in terms of gluten etc.

Review 88:The location, the facilities and the friendly staff. Thursday dinner excellent, staff member in the bar very aware of the importance of getting gluten free meal right - celiac disease is a disease. He understood this. Meal was excellent. Staff also understood at breakfast time. A pity no gluten free toast. I would recommend the hotel as a pleasant reasonably priced venue

Review 89:The bed was very uncomfortable and when one of us got into bed, the other nearly sprang out. It would be nice if dogs were allowed in the lounge.

Review 90:The room was clean and quiet. Being able to bring our dog was great.

Review 91:Pillows were a rock hard, easily remedied with a bit of investment. Breakfast was nice enough but spoiled because milk for cereal was off, to be fair once we pointed this out we got an immediate apology and they brought out fresh.

Review 92:Really friendly staff, very helpful, good location, nice grounds, historic building, room we were in was very roomy for the price we paid.

Review 93:This is our 2nd stay at the Durker Roods. We have visited in summer and winter. our latest visit just after christmas co-incided with a heavy fall of snow, the hills surrounding the hotel with their blanket of snow looked stunning. A lovely location. We were intrigued to read that the name of the hotel means' House on the marsh' in medieval English. A lovely old hotel and lovely staff.

Review 94:sunday morning breakfast finished at 0945 we were the last to be served and they were cleaning up around us.

Review 95:very friendly, comfortable and breakfast was good

Review 96:Tv in room didn't work and tap in bathroom was labeled up incorrectly turned towards blue hot came through and vice versa

Review 97:Was there for a wedding overall stay was great

Review 98:decor of rooms didn't reflect the building, this didn't ruin anything.

Review 99:staff we're friendly Breakfast was tasty Rooms we're clean Easy to find and park

Review 100:Bathroom shampoo dispenser empty on both days of our visit, central heating still set for warmer days rather than the sudden drop in temperature.

Review 101:Friendly staff, excellent room, good breakfasts, pleasant grounds. Always at least two real ales at the bar. Good range of bar food. Walking distance to village of Meltham and it's restaurants (Quirky Corner and the Pink Elephant are recommended).

Review 102:Very lumpy bed No wifi in room Mediocre food

Review 103:Excellent staff ,nice period hotel with well manicured gardens, good car parking.Only hotel in the area of any quality

Review 104:The hotel looked shabby and was in need of refurbishment. It looked very dated. The shelf in the bathroom was wobbly and the toilet seat was loose

Review 105:The breakfast was good The setting and grounds were good

Review 106:Bathroom was covered in hair when we got there, had to wait ages for staff to appear when we were checking out despite ringing the bell a couple of times - a large queue had formed by the time we managed to check out. We were also told the wrong finish time for breakfast when we checked in - 10am instead of 9.45am so we missed breakfast. It wasn't worth £90 - have had better stays at cheaper hotels.

Review 107:The room was good on the whole - spacious with a comfortable bed and furniture. The hotel was easy to find and there were lots of parking spaces. The bar was open late and was well-stocked and a fair price.

Review 108:Wasn't greeted by reception but a waitress that didn't know much about where our room was. The doors are wooden and you can hear everyone returning to their rooms. The pillows hurt my neck and when we went for breakfast there isn't much choice. They didn't even clean our table. Quite basic but nice decor

Review 109:Choice of food was limited. Would have liked a more basic choice along with the 'fine dining' choice for snacks etc. All choices too rich and rather expensive.

Review 110:Reasonable price

Review 111:Was Fantastic. Love the old look of Hotel and could not fault anything. Will be telling everyone if going that way. Thankyou very much for the lovely stay.

Review 112:Some of the decor Looks a bit tired but it didn't spoil the good impression you get when arriving at the hotel. Walls in bedrooms were thin as could here switches gone on and off and the snoring from room next door but this not put us off staying again. Lastly at breakfast having only 1 member of staff working was not a good idea as they seemed to be everywhere from reception to cooking in the kitchen and taking orders for breakfast. My congratulations goes out to them for this for trying to keep everyone happy, as some had to wait awhile for their breakfast. This may of been due to numbers staying in hotel and would definately come back.

Review 113:The location is great, food and choice of drinks are excellent and value for money. Beds are comfortable and bedrooms spacious. Staff very helpful and seem to enjoy their work.

Review 114:There was no fresh fruit at breakfast. Wifi signal was a weak in some areas. Shower was a bit feeble.

Review 115:Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was spacious, clean and tidy with a power socket near the bed which was very handy. The food was well prepared with a nice range and not too expensive.

Review 116:Music a little too loud in bar/lounge area and at breakfast. To be honest it was very near perfect...thanks to the staff

Review 117:Ample parking, very comfortable room, friendly staff, hotel with character, clean, excellent location for Huddersfield/Oldham/Leeds area, wi-fi, excellent value for money. Very likely to stay again.

Review 118:Staffs inability to stamp down on unruly children who were part of a Wedding Party. No problem with other guests or Disco, but group of youngsters were playing catch/hide and seek on the stairs and corridors outside bedrooms. Continued well past 23:00. Bedroom was basic(no bedside units) and needed dusting.

Review 119:Lovely building with large lounge and bar facilities. Good food selection, both bar meals and restaurant serving quality food - large portions. Breakfast also above average. Good value for money.

Review 120:There was not a menber of staff on the front desk when we arrived,we had taken five hours to get there and just wanted to check in and get some food.

Review 121:Breakfast was good.

Review 122:Apart from one young man working in the bar - the majority of other staff could benefit from a more professional approach to customers

Review 123:Quiet surroundings

Review 124:Having to leave and come home!

Review 125:We stay here a couple of times a year and it never disappoints. Plenty of parking, a few minutes walk from Meltham, a few minutes drive to Holmfirth and Huddersfield and beautiful countryside on the doorstep makes it an ideal spot. The staff are friendly, the rooms are spotless and comfortable. The lunches and breakfasts are good (we haven't tried the evening meals). We'll be back for more later in the year.

Review 126:Room 26 walls need some soundproofing to get a good nights sleep. Not as close to Holmfirth as web site implies.

Review 127:Relaxed ambience from staff. Adequate and well cooked breakfast.

Review 128:Room was dated but tidy and with character, en-suite clean, towels clean. Breakfast was excellent, staff friendly and helpful, I would most definitely stay here again and recommend it to fellow travellers .

Review 129:Our family room in the new annex was extremely hot and stuffy, it had only one window which, we assume as the room was on the ground floor would only open an inch, hence we didn't sleep very well at all. Also we had very inconsiderate neighbours (not the fault of the hotel), but when we asked at the main desk could they please intervene, the young gentleman there was rather reluctant.

Review 130:The location is good, house very elegant, the breakfast was excellent, wonderful garden, a well socked bar and generally a very easy going atmosphere about the place. There was a good level of staffing - predominately young people who were very friendly and welcoming.

Review 131:Decoration a bit tired, basic rooms (but clean).

Review 132:Nice and friendly, decent food (including the evening meals) for a hotel, quiet location. Fine for a 3 star hotel at the price.

Review 133:We asked before booking that we had a room not overlooking staff areas etc. We were given one facing the roof of the extension and above the cellar and beer barrels. We were changed into another one but this was over the front doors and smoking areas. For non smokers the fumes were not good. Also, when the bar was open late, we were disturbed by the noise from the smokers until up to 2.00am, Loud laughter and wind breaking competition one night!

Review 134:Food very good value. Staff very friendly and obliging. Quiet(ish)area

Review 135:The water dripping through the front foyer into laid out buckets on the floor.

Review 136:It's nicely situated in meltham for the surrounding areas of gorgeous countryside. My room was nice and clean. The bar was fine. The staff were attentive to my needs. Due to seeing friends I didn't have a meal, but what I could see of others it looked and smelt good.

Review 137:Arrangements were made in advance for two rooms to be booked close together - for our 15 yr old daughter to be adjacent . We checked this booking three weeks before our arrival . On arrival we were told the plans had been changed at the last minute . Our daughter was put in a room no where near our room , in fact the furthest away in the annex . we complained and asked for this to be reviewed but the pre planning we had asked for was disregarded The Manager rang me on Monday morning and was abrupt and unhelpful . I was told if I had wanted my daughter to be with us I should have booked a family room. I said this was not necessary as I was reassured the rooms we had booked were nearby , rooms 2 and 4 . On the day however my daughter was in room 37 . Very unfriendly customer service with no attempt to apologise, compensate or acknowledge their error .

Review 138:The breakfast and the kind elderly lady was excellent. Overall the staff seemed good but slightly weary at the weekend with many errors with bookings we observed , not just our own .
