Reviews for High Tor Hotel
Review 1:Fantastic hotel. Great location, just a short walk to Matlock and Matlock Bath. All of the staff were extremely helpful and very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely stay here again in the future.
Review 2:We stayed at the hotel last year for new years eve so we compared this year to our last visit. In our opinion there were not enough staff on this year(3 including the chef as far as we saw) and no plans were made to provide any entertainment for the new year celebrations. As there had been a disco last year and we had not received any information from the hotel to say there wouldn't be this year, we naturally assumed it would be similar. Although we cannot fault the room, we were disappointed with the evening. It will put us off booking next year which is a shame as last year was really good.
Review 3:The room was excellent. It was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was amazing with a huge bath.
Review 4:The staff were fabulous, helpful, warm and friendly. The location was perfect, within walking distance to the shops and restaurants but also perfect for lovely walks. The bar was open for beverages and drinks all day. Finally, we had a very comfortable room, with a special bathroom.
Review 5:Small niggles. No soap in dispenser (luckily had brought our own). Only two clothes hangers provided and no clothes / coat hooks. Bar poorly stocked. Blind not mended on the day reported.
Review 6:Staff were very helpful. Eggs Benedict at breakfast were excellent.
Review 7:No bar staff Saturday afternoon. Had to wait for the woman on front of house to serve. She was efficient and lovely though.
Review 8:The photos don't do the place justice at all. Very comfortable, spacious rooms for affordable prices, all staff very accommodating and friendly.
Review 9:It is a very nice hotel in a good location not far from both the centre of town and the venue to which we were going. The room and its facilities were excellent and we have already told the staff that we intend to stay there next year at the same time.
Review 10:Only one serving of milk for tea making in room- very minor complaint i know but felt major to me at 11pm when i wanted a coffee!!
Review 11:Excellent hotel with modern contemporary interior
Review 12:There were blinds instead of curtains and as we were on the road side the street lights shine through
Review 13:The staff were all really friendly and steak night was a great offer
Review 14:My only suggestion would be to add bedside tables - neither room I've stayed in had a place for my nightly glass of water! Otherwise perfect.
Review 15:Good food and lovely staff. Generously upgraded me to a small double from my booked single which was very nice.
Review 16:I'm so happy I've found this fanatic little gem. It's in a great location with wonderful staff. The rooms are modern however they still keep there countryside charm. Fantastic stay, will definitely stay here again!
Review 17:The hairs under the mattress cover. The dust in scurting boards and beams. Not enough toiletries
Review 18:The bath and the bed. And the quietness. Very peaceful
Review 19:Loved the welcoming friendly atmosphere, location was perfect for us. The hotel was beautiful, clean and the staff were lovely. Food was extremely good too. The hotel paid a lot of attention to detail and got it so right!
Review 20:Very friendly staff in a relaxed atmosphere. It's also ideally situated right in the middle between Matlock & Matlock Bath. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Review 21:No heating in bedroom and towel room in bathroom cold. The bed was quite hard and the duvet thin. No bedside table on one side of bed and the supposedly bedside light was just a glow! Our account was charged wrongly from the bar although it was adjusted when we mentioned it without quibble.
Review 22:Individual hotel, nice decor and features, lovely bathrooms. Very clean and lovely fluffy towels.
Review 23:We were given room 11- TERRIBLE freezing room! very small broken blind and very frayed. Not a good night and to pay £85 for this standard without breakfast is not my idea of a luxury hotel.
Review 24:Our room was very big and looked great but it lacked a few basics like a shower curtain, towel rail, bedside cabinet.
Review 25:Very friendly and helpful staff. Good food served at breakfast and evening meal. Very comfortable bed.
Review 26:The wifi wasnt great but its a mountainy place so what do you expect!
Review 27:The staff were lovely. It was in a nice quiet area. I took my boyfriend here for a romantic 21st birthday and we enjoyed relaxing (especially being 8 months pregnant!)
Review 28:We booked this hotel on the basis that it had a restaurant but was only told on arrival that no food was being served as Chef was off ! Had we been advised this we would have chose a different hotel as we were only staying one night and wanted a relaxing evening but because of this we had to get taxi's to other place to eat . Was refunded for our taxi cost but we still didn't get what we were looking for as we purposely was only wanting to stay at a hotel with a restaurant .
Review 29:Location perfect , nice clean room and very good size. Staff very friendly and helpful .
Review 30:That I wasn't there for longer. Also the t.v had poor signal as did the wifi.
Review 31:The food was absolutely delicious. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and made the stay very pleasurable. It was a really good visit.
Review 32:We paid for a "superior room" but got an ordinary room the sort you get at any chain of hotels nationwide. We at least expected a king size bed. The hotel charged extra for breakfast, which made our stay pricey.
Review 33:The hotel was clean & modern inside
Review 34:Like all hotels, in my experience, the pillows could have been better.
Review 35:Staff very helpful and friendly, room was good, We had booked one of the smaller rooms but it was a decent size.
Review 36:The high level of cleanliness, good quality of carpets, furniture and fittings, plenty of cupboard space and excellent styling of the shower and toilet area. The friendliness and willingness of the staff to please.
Review 37:The only small problem was we couldn't access wifi in our room. We got it downstairs but it did cut off. It was only a small inconvenience.
Review 38:Location. Comfort. Lovely staff. It was a beautiful hotel in a great location
Review 39:Lovely location. The room was really nice and the shower was brilliant. Staff were really friendly and made us welcome even though we booked at last minute. Definitely recommend it!
Review 40:Our room didn't have a key! as some previous guest had taken it away. We had to ask for coat hangers for the wardrobe.
Review 41:Excellent restaurant. Interesting building.
Review 42:Nothing to report
Review 43:Food was very good, both breakfast and evening meal, two good steaks and deserts for £25. Hotel was clean and tidy throughout. Shower was hot and powerful, we had a wonderful weekend ane expect to return to the hotel.
Review 44:Room was a small single with limited headroom - not the double it was sold as. There was nowhere to put anything, no full length hanging space and getting out of bed was a joke due to the size of room and sloping ceiling. The shower had boiling water coming out of one side of the shower head and freezing the other - most uncomfortable, the television bracket was broken, the mirror on the dressing table was hanging by one hinge and some of the skirting board was missing. Breakfast was slow and overpriced.
Review 45:Friendly staff
Review 46:Was not given any info on wifi and didnt like that the toilet was 'open' but no air freshner was provided but other than that it was great!
Review 47:The room and comfort and location.
Review 48:The room was too hot and stuffy, no air con and the window was wide open. The bed was a double but too small. No wifi in the room. This place is located in a place that'll always have high demand for accommodation given the tourists and weddings that go on nearby. It has allowed them to remain in the 90s and for £125 per night I've stayed in better places. Someone actually complained that morning about other issues at check out. I do not know how this gets an average of 8.6.
Review 49:Not much. The room was clean.
Review 50:Unfortunately full english breakfast let it down breaky was minimal n not nice to our liking. the bar only had minimal drinks to offer n coke out of bottle not nice better on tap apart from that it lovely place.
Review 51:Hotel n staff lovely n great help for places to visit in the area. Hotel located on main road but was very quiet on nite time so was nice place to relax. Room was lovely modern n clean.
Review 52:It may have been our bad luck but the room we were allocated as a 'double room' was (1) small, and in a roof extension, which held the day's heat and was therefore very stuffy; (2) the bed was small - definitely not a double bed!; (3) our door key would not work, so we had an arrangement where every time we left the room, and wanted to re-enter, we had to ask the porter to accompany us with the master key; (4) the windows were difficult to open and to keep open; (5) the bathroom is quite small. Compared with many other experiences, this room was not worth the money we paid. Incidentally, and this is not the hotel's fault, the road on which the hotel is located is so, so noisy, with a constant stream of loud cars and motor-bikes. It is because the road is in a deep ravine, where the noise cannot escape. This spoiled Matlock for us - we couldn't wait to leave! The noise must at times be well above the legal limits.
Review 53:It's in a nice scenic location, and is handy for access to either Matlock or Matlock Bath. The staff we met were helpful, so I do not blame them for the faults.
Review 54:Food not so good!! Limited menu. Chips undercooked for evening meal, Requested Scrambled Egg & Smokes Salmon for breakfast --- was served Scrambled Egg with a blob!! of Salmon Roulade on top!! Under the Radar as far as WIFI was concerned.
Review 55:Rooms were nice, comfortable & clean good location,
Review 56:We couldn't get wifi in our room. The room didn't have windows you could open which was a bit uncomfortable considering how warm the weather was, and the velux blind did not block out the light at night. Only 1 channel on the TV worked properly.
Review 57:Good location, good parking and nice building.
Review 58:I did not think that the food in the restaurant was as good as we expected or for the price. It was a bit hit and miss. We ate there for 2 evenings.
Review 59:Nice rooms, comfortable seating areas in bar and on landing outside rooms.
Review 60:Only issue is that wifi couldn't be picked up in our room but this is more because of the fact that we were in Derbyshire countryside
Review 61:Well presented hotel with every amenity we needed for our young family Friendly and welcoming owners and were very receptive to any requests we had Located 15 mins walk from both Matlock and Matlock bath, this is perfect base from which to explore the beautiful derbyshire countryside
Review 62:Wifi was not working upstairs and only available near reception. They need to sort this out.
Review 63:Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable, clean and tidy. Easy walk to both Matlock and Matlock Bath. Our evening meal was well presented and delicious.
Review 64:The hotel is beautifully presented in the modern 'boutique' style with very neutral décor and blonde wood in the rooms, great shower. We had a room at the front of the hotel that would normally be quite noisy but because the hotel is well above the road it was very quiet. the staff were charming, and dinner on Saturday night was good, and good value. Breakfast was very good.
Review 65:The car park was a little difficult to enter coming from the Matlock direction as it entailed a difficult right turn.
Review 66:Friendliness of staff. Nothing was too much trouble to ensure an enjoyable stay.
Review 67:4' 6" bed in 'luxury' double room (which was very small). Mattress extremely firm to point of being uncomfortable. No soap and only one tiny bottle of shower gel for two people in bathroom. Overflowing laundry basket on landing outside our room throughout stay. Dirty windows in room. Breakfast service extremely slow - more staff needed!
Review 68:Good position. Friendly staff. Quiet.
Review 69:Our room had a leaking tap, cracked floor tiles, an unnecessarily small basin and bedside lights that did not switch separately. The hotel is next to the A6 and traffic noise was an issue in the morning, as was light coming through the inadequate vertical blinds. But the evening meal was the disaster of our stay - no ice, white wine barely below room temperature, poorly seasoned and presented dishes - overall we were very surprised that this hotel had an 8.8 review score!
Review 70:Friendly staff Comfortable bed Clean refurbished room
Review 71:Friendly welcoming staff, good breakfast selection and good sized rooms. Nice decor throughout the hotel and a chilled bar area made this a very pleasant stay.
Review 72:WIFI does not extend to the bed room - though is available in a small area with a desk
Review 73:Great location for Matlock and Matlock Bath and walks around The Heights of Abraham. Nice breakfast (though not included in the price), comfortable bed
Review 74:Because of traffic, we arrived very late at night. We were warmly welcomed and swiftly shown to accommodation. At first, the bed seemed hard, but I slept surprisingly well. The décor was a strange mix of old and new. Breakfast was very generous and served by cheerful staff who were good with children.
Review 75:The bed was hard as a rock. The hotel, booked on booking.com, cost us more without breakfast than anyplace else we stayed in the UK, including the Crown Plaza at Heathrow which was twice as nice and included breakfast. Next time will definitely look for a B&B in the area. Staff did not tell us there was an elevator nor what the wifi password was when we checked in. When my wife went out to the car later at night, there was no light in the parking lot, making it very difficult.
Review 76:The hotel was well located by the A6. It was clean and roomy.
Review 77:The bed was very firm and pillows were quite tough. Iv got a bad back from work so it was the best nights sleep.
Review 78:The staff were lovely and very helpful. They even went out of their way to put petals on my bed as I proposed a short while earlier to my girlfriend before so I could come back to it.
Review 79:There wasn't anything at the hotel that you wouldn't get at a travel lodge for a lot less money. Our room had dust and broken objects in which I wouldn't expect for £100 a night. The bed was very small, maybe a 3/4 bed? me and my partner are average size and were really uncomfortable due to the small width. Overall an okay hotel but disappointed due to the price.
Review 80:Location was good as it's walking distance to matlock and matlock bath. Staff were very friendly
Review 81:Bed was rather hard.
Review 82:Excellent food and wine and chef very willing to cater for our two children. Top class new breakfast menu. Lots of comfortable space to relax with friends. Great location.
Review 83:Breakfast was extra cost and disappointing quality. Bathrooms were clean but smelt slightly damp.
Review 84:Warm and friendly reception from receptionist, who ensured that we had rooms which met our needs. Rooms themselves were very nice.
Review 85:Breakfast was nice but extra and nothing special
Review 86:We were in the executive queen (I think) and if was stunning, round bed, giant bath, chocolate biscuits, all excellent!
Review 87:Breakfast was very average. Orange juice watered down, asked for white toast but got mixed bread instead.TV in room was very small.
Review 88:Friendly atmosphere. Very clean hotel. Comfortable room.
Review 89:The bed in room 12 is narrow. There is no full length mirror. We were allocated one small bottle of shampoo and one shower gel to share between us.
Review 90:Welcome was warm and everywhere was very clean.
Review 91:Not knowing that breakfast wasn't included in the price - should be made more obvious when booking
Review 92:Room very clean and welcoming with thoughtful little touches. Easy to walk into both Matlock and Matlock Bath for a meal in the evening.
Review 93:The wi- fi would not work, needed a chair in the room and a larger sink in the bathroom. A bedside table in between the two singles beds would have been useful.
Review 94:The staff were very friendly and efficient,
Review 95:Wi-fi coverage not very good, could do with a sink for able bodied as well as disabled in the family room.
Review 96:Good location, car park, clean, fresh, big room.
Review 97:I had beef Bourguignon which was just a piece of slowly cooked beef with a resembling wine sauce. The mash were discusting with potatoes still uncooked. Bearing in mind that it advertises as a wine bar, there was no wine list and only 3 wines offered. The cheese was on the menu but there was no cheese board.
Review 98:Only the room.
Review 99:Couldn't really fault it. Only small complaint would be that no one was on reception when we arrived so had to wait a while to check in and there was no soap in bathroom!
Review 100:Beautiful location and close to lots of places to visit.
Review 101:Way too hot. Storage heaters pumping out heat night and day. Ruined what would have been a good night. Opening window let traffic noise in from A6.
Review 102:Nice food, comfortable, clean rooms.
Review 103:The welcome was lovely and very accommodating. Beautiful hotel, so clean with lovely modern decor and finishing touches. The chef came to speak to us and spent a good deal of time making sure he got it right for us as we have special dietary requirements and altered dishes for us which won us over. Food was delicious.
Review 104:Couldn't complain about anything.
Review 105:Food was exceptional. Staff were very friendly, hotel was spotless, room was spacious and modern. Already booking for the summer.
Review 106:Breakfast staff were polite and helpful but could have have talked to each other, saw one couple wait for a while to order, but they received an immediate apology. Cooked breakfast was lovely, although I got a beautiful pork sausage whilst my fiancée got a chilly one?
Review 107:Lovely clean, higher end hotel. Evening restaurant meal and bar area was beautiful.
Review 108:Couldn't read the gauge on the heater. Nowwhere to put bathroom accessories such as soap, shampoo etc and likewise with the sink. All these are minor points but would help
Review 109:Staff very friendly. Room good, bed excellent, location good
Review 110:Only slight negative is the TV was tiny but thats it.
Review 111:Great location for both Matlock and Matlock Bath. Possibly the cleanest Hotel I've stayed in. Although very close to the main A6 you could hardly tell.
Review 112:Not too easy to find. For the price I should have thought breakfast would have been included. Tried to charge for an extra drink when I paid my bill although to be fair they did not argue when I pointed this out.
Review 113:Clean rooms. Nice welcome. Pleasant service.
Review 114:We booked for our first wedding anniversary which also coincided with a gig we wanted to go to at The Loft. We paid for a nicer room and we weren't disappointed. It was absolutely beautiful. The bar area was lovely and the breakfast in the morning was spot on. All the staff we encountered were more than helpful, very friendly and always had time for us. Would def stay there again!!
Review 115:I loved the staff. They were attentive and polite, quick with their service without comprimising on its quality. The room itself was perfectly clean, comfortable and had excellent facilities. I was astonished the television actually worked with is something I have never found in other supposed high quality hotels. The food was superb, delicious and the service was prompt. I was suprised more people had not chosen to dine in the hotel restaurant. I could not praise it enough. The quality of the hotel, its staff, food and facilities made the trip my boyfriend and I made even better.
Review 116:1. Double bed only 4 ft wide! 2. No water on arrival - but only a note in room about it and 3 little bottles. Not reinstated until after breakfast followng morning. 3. Staff very inexperienced. 4. Breakfast was pretty poor. 'Warmed' croissants were cheap and cold, served straight out of the (probably) Poundland packet. Awful. The bacon was salty and with a hair in it. Goodness knows what a dinner would be like.
Review 117:1. Location OK 2. Bar looked nice 3. Got good discount for the lack of ability to have a shower
Review 118:The hotel was very clean and tidy. All the décor was up to date, Nice bar area. The Staff were very helpful and had good local Knowledge. Good car parking area.
Review 119:Parking was difficult as we arrived later than most guests and one space available was very tight for our car,
Review 120:Good location, clean, friendly and good value for money
Review 121:The young lady whose name we didn't get unfortunately was so friendly and attentive was absolutely brilliant! Lovely hotel can thoroughly recommend if you have to stay in Matlock Bath!
Review 122:Our main gripe is that we came hoping for a quiet night as we had a long journey the next day, only to find that there was a party taking place with extremely loud music - and we had been put in a room directly above the party. For me, a hotel should inform clients in advance in such cases - we would certainly have booked elsewhere. And I'm sorry, but this has none of the characteristics of a boutique hotel - it's bog standard, uninspiring, other than the location.
Review 123:We asked for an early breakfast, as we had to get to London to catch a plane - the manager was only too happy to oblige The bed was very comfortable and once we got to sleep, we slept extremely well
Review 124:bed too small room small (head banging attic space) WiFi didn't work for all 3 days of stay food expensive in our opinion
Review 125:hotel in general. staff very friendly and helpful, dealt with an emergency loss of water very well.
Review 126:Thought the breakfast should have been included in the plus £100 per night rate
Review 127:The room was large and comfortable, well appointed and clean. Staff were relaxed and friendly. Hotel ideally placed between Matlock and Matlock Bath, an easy walk to either.
Review 128:One room very cramped, not enough milk, sugar or tea in room. Biscuits in one room not in other. Shower and wash basin not cleaned well over weekend. No shelving or surface in bathroom for toiletries. Other room bigger but sealed window and noisy aircon.Private party and disco with noise until midnight Sat.- a sleep problem. Also this deterred us from eating 'in house' that night.
Review 129:Situation, although on busy A6 was fine, as hotal raised above road behind a stone wall. Scenery and aspect from hotel beautiful and walking distance to both Matlock, one way and Matlock Bath the other. Cleanliness and room presentation on arrival good. Towels thick and good quality. Bathrooms modern, one being very light and airy. The bar and dining area were pleasant.
Review 130:Limited breakfast cereals, and it was chef's day off so dinner option limited to chicken curry. Wifi only available in public area.
Review 131:Nice room, good parking, convenient for walks into Matlock.
Review 132:Poorly ventilated room and bathroom The first room we were given was a shoe box. The second was better Breakfast was expensive for nothing special
Review 133:The shower Good quality room Good food Friendly Staff
