Reviews for The Royal Oak Hotel

Review 1:The staff were friendly and helped us to get a taxi to our venue for my best friends wedding. Beautiful building in a gorgeous location. All the local shops are fabulous and everyone is so friendly. Would recommend anyone to stay and visit here.

Review 2:We would have loved to have to seen a vegetarian full English breakfast on the menu.

Review 3:Positioned on the market square, the Royal Oak is in a perfect position to explore Helmsley and the surrounding areas. Without exception the staff were great. Our room (1) was comfortable and well equipped; despite being above the busy bar and overlooking the square, there was no noise pollution whatsoever. Given the price, we couldn't ask for anything more.

Review 4:Fairground had arrived outside hotel (no fault of hotel) very noisy would have been good to know prior to arrival however hotel offered alternate room

Review 5:Nothing to dislike.

Review 6:Lovey view over the market place from our room. Breakfast excellent. Staff friendly and attentive. Everywhere clean and comfortable.

Review 7:parking ticket as we thought the space outside hotel was hotel parking.pay and display notice completely washed out!!!

Review 8:Staff very helpful and friendly. Rooms comfy and clean. Breakfast excellent

Review 9:Our bathroom was one of the last to be updated so was needing some TLC - but having said that - it was large enough and clean and did what a bathroom needs to do. I saw the updated bathrooms and they looked lovely.

Review 10:Friendly staff from the moment we arrived. Room was large and airy, clean and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent, a large plateful of locally sourced bacon, suasuages and black pud (other alternatives were available)

Review 11:The rooms whilst recently redecorated are dated and bathrooms small with smell of cooked food.

Review 12:Friendly and very helpful staff. Home cooked food and good real ale

Review 13:Ok it was only a double bed +- next time we'll book a king size

Review 14:Excellent location, so clean and tidy, staff could not do better. Great in+-room facilities and breakfast best ever!

Review 15:Rather tired and very cramped bathroom with dripping shower. Nasty soap dispenser with cheap soap.

Review 16:Absolutely amazing staff! They simply couldn't do enough for us.

Review 17:Summer night stay some noise from revellers in market square until early hours but not a big issue.frien

Review 18:Room 5 was excellent large bright and very comfortable. Dual aspect windows with views over beck at rear of property.

Review 19:NONE!

Review 20:Great place to stay. The hosts are really friendly and accommodating and really care that you have enjoyed your stay. Pub has a friendly atmosphere and the room we stayed in was beautiful. Food was great. Location great for any type of holiday (we were cycling) in and around Helmsley.

Review 21:As it was a pub it was noisy until after 11pm but we were out until then so it didn't bother us, but is worth checking if there is any music if you are looking to relax.

Review 22:Room was large and spacious and facilities were reasonable. Double bed was very comfortable.

Review 23:No parking (but free parking on nearby streets, although they can get quite busy).

Review 24:The bedroom and bathroom were very large and clean. The location is excellent. The pub is very nice.

Review 25:Car parking is a problem. No overnight parking nearby. Staff were not very helpful with advice on where to go.

Review 26:Large open bedroom with good ensuite facilaties

Review 27:Bathroom toilet wouldn't flush. Every time I used the toilet it took me three tries to flush before finally working. Really bad sewage smell from sink on second night. Ran water to clear drain and smell wasn't as bad. No reception as the hotel was above a pub. Really didn't know who to ask for information about Helmsley. When we did ask our typical tourist questions (how to get to certain places that were nearby) we were given completely inaccurate responses. Perhaps owners are too busy with their pub to give much attention to their hotel guests. Spoke to guests in a hotel across from us and they had stayed at the Royal Oak, but weren't impressed and have since stayed at The Feathers, which is right across the square.

Review 28:Location was superb! Right in the main square. Just adored staying in Helmsley. Town beautiful. Room was comfortable enough for three nights, but I would probably look into staying at one of the other places if I were to stay in Helmsley again.

Review 29:After an afternoon of walking I was looking forward to a soak in the bath. There was no complimentary bubble bath - just a dispenser on the wall - luckily I'd taken my own Radox. I ran the hot water and thankfully didn't put any cold in as the hot water went cold after only filling half the bath. The bed was uncomfortable as you could feel the mattress underneath. You can hear the noise from the pub below. The place advertises free parking. This is actually parking on the street opposite the pub - if you can get a space, which we couldn't so had to pay to park in the market square. I think the rooms in this pub are over priced for the facilities on offer - I've stayed in better Travellodges.

Review 30:The manager, Rob, was friendly and helpful and put the heating on in the room as it was cold. The room was big and nicely done. Good Central location for Helmsley.

Review 31:Friendly Interested staff. comfortable room, clean, breakfast choice good, great views of Market square lots going on during day, could site and watch for hours! vibrant place, great price, whats not to like?

Review 32:Nothing

Review 33:Professional Friendly Staff room finished to a very high standard, wonderful breakfast, great location and free parking nearby, oh the best beer in Helmsley

Review 34:Our experience was marred by a little grouchiness on the part of the staff. Could have been a bad couple of days for them but could have been a nicer stay with a few smiles.

Review 35:Nice little farmers' market in the square on Friday morning.

Review 36:bed was very hard and found it uncomfortable, but that may just be personal preference, also tried running a bath around 10pm and there was no hot water.

Review 37:very nice and helpful staff, great location on main square, fantastic food, nice clean room

Review 38:Poor selection of toiletries provided for the price paid, no evening meal available on a Sunday (the day we stayed), average breakfast.Av

Review 39:Great location

Review 40:The only adverse comment would be that it was relatively noisy but it was Saturday night and it did nit go on too long.

Review 41:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Special mention to be made of returning infant's clothing returned to us by mail which had been left in the room. Unexpected but much appreciated

Review 42:Was expected due to it being a pub and it's location, but there is noise from the pub below until 11pm or later and some from the square in front.

Review 43:Great location, spacious room, large bed

Review 44:Being kept up till gone midnight when I had to be up at 5:30am for an event with the music down stairs from the bar. So £55 for 4 hours sleep and a cheese and ham sandwich poor all round. Wish I'd slept in the car.

Review 45:Good location, nice bar, clean

Review 46:To be honest I have absolutely nothing to complain about

Review 47:Located in the heart of the town, it is a traditional English pub. Room bigger than you might expect for this type of pub - very clean and very comfortable - staff friendly and good breakfast. Better than average for pub accommodation - will definitely return

Review 48:Grrrreat food and excellent value Nice selection of quality beers at a fair price. Clean and comfortable room. Excellent caring staff. We will return!!!!!

Review 49:Reception was a bit chaotic, we were booked in a ' deluxe family room ' it was hardly deluxe. Tiny bathroom, shower only, no space for toiletries, sink plug broken. No daily cleaning.

Review 50:LOCATION

Review 51:Went down for dinner at 8 but had stopped serving food, though said it was served till 8:30. Minor issue overall.

Review 52:Room was really nice very clean lots of towels provided. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Excellent breakfast.

Review 53:We booked for 2 nights but left after one, as the accommodation was not of an acceptable standard. Was described on website as deluxe room but reality was far from that. Bathroom was in need of a complete renovation, there was black mould all around shower tray, and a dangerous step down from shower. Nowhere to put toiletries , nowhere even to hang a hand towel. Constant noise during the night from Saniflo system. Bedroom was OK but in need of a refresh. One of beds was damaged and repaired with masking tape. Mattresses were not great quality. The only mirror in the room was above the twin bed - we had to take it off the wall and sit on the floor in order to dry our hair and do makeup. The owner was apologetic when we complained, and acknowledged the need for renovation works but knowing this, they should have provided an honest description and lowered the price to reflect the current condition of the accommodation.

Review 54:Location, fluffy towels, cotton bedlinen
