Reviews for Best Western Grasmere Red Lion Hotel

Review 1:Unfortunately the swimming pool was closed due to damage caused the week before by flooding but this was not the hotels fault. They arranged for us to use a nearby hotel's pool.

Review 2:Fantastic refurbished room (Ruskin room). Amazing location. Good food in the Lamb Inn.

Review 3:Spotless and well appointed, bargain room and bathroom, the best we have encountered in 35 years of travelling together, especially good when looking for a budget break. We had room 208, which looks out across rooftops to rear, slightly larger than some of the front facing rooms, but without the village view, absolutely fine for our stay. We will be visiting again at these prices.

Review 4:not a 'bad' experience as such however, the day we were leaving, the hotel had started refurb, bar, rooms and dining room. and we couldn't help feeling that we were in the way and the sooner we left the better it would be?

Review 5:we always enjoy our stay at the Red Lion-we just love the village and the hotel setting

Review 6:If we have to say something negative, it would be that the restaurant/breakfast room to the left of reception was a little dated. The other area in the glass house was nice and we wish that we had eaten in there each morning.

Review 7:We loved the decor in our room which was Silver How. The rest of the hotel was lovely too. We really enjoyed the food both at breakfast and in the evening.

Review 8:We were in Seat Sandal and the wall was paper thin. We heard nothing but next door's TV until 11:30 that night and then again in the morning.

Review 9:The location, the friendly staff

Review 10:Loud, very loud music as there seem to be a Christmas party going on! We were not informed. Is sound was turned down it would have been better as the room was too small for this.

Review 11:The only minor problem was finding a parking space.

Review 12:We received an upgrade to a room which was free of charge and a lovely surprise on arrival. The breakfast was excellent and all the staff were friendly and efficient.

Review 13:It was a bit too warm in the room and difficult to turn the radiator down. Lack of parking was also a little bit of a problem. Wifi was patchy in the bedroom.

Review 14:The bed was amazing, really comfortable and big. The room on the whole was very comfortable and the staff were really friendly and welcoming.

Review 15:Not enough sugar in the room.

Review 16:The reception staff were very attentive and helpful. The bar was fabulous, mattress excellent as was the TV and CD player in the room

Review 17:Rather unusual incident with a fisticuffs at the hotel over a TV delivery man. Never really heard the full out come - but three police vans!!!

Review 18:The Lamb Inn. Open all day.

Review 19:Made to feel welcome from the moment stepping into hotel, staff very friendly, hotel had a home from home comfort, great food, lovely bedrooms, great facilities and Dogs welcome in most areas on the hotel. overall cant wait to re-book, beautiful setting.

Review 20:The tables in the Lamb Inn looked cheap and cramped. Also, the lounge in the main hotel looked like a cramped retirement home with tired mismatched sofas.

Review 21:Our upgraded room was tastefully decorated and comfortable. Food in the Lamb Inn excellent.

Review 22:Just a few small final touches needed in room.needed a shower curtain etc.overall small details.

Review 23:Fantastic staff.very warm and welcoming.room beautiful.hotel clean.breakfast great.

Review 24:Went to use the leisure facilities, the jacuzzi and steam room weren't working but we were not told when checking in or before our visit etc. Both restaurants were full (not the issue) when we went down to eat but we were not asked if we wanted to book a table for that night when we checked in. Just need to inform guests more

Review 25:Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff who made us feel welcome. Lovely area and would stay again! :)

Review 26:I booked a single room and found a nice small room spoiled by a large double bed so there was no room for my suitcase, or more importantly a chair. I spent a very wet saturday afternoon uncomfortably sitting on my bed trying to read and work. A single bed and a comfy chair would have been much better. Room 210. the staff told me they would never book this as a double so why a double bed? I was slightly worried about the fire escape situation - an old building, no external fire escapes. all staircases wooden so presumably could quickly go up in flames, quite a way from my room to the nearest staircase. While the guests were sensibly asked not to light candles there was a large candle burning in reception which did not seem a great idea..

Review 27:the swimming pool was lovely - but rather hard to find! a bonus perhaps cos no one else found it!

Review 28:The only down side is the limited parking spaces

Review 29:The hotel is right in the centre of the village close to all amenities and walks. The staff are helpful and friendly and the hotel is spotlessly clean and is very comfortable to relax in. Have stayed before and will definitely stay again?

Review 30:I loved everything about our stay, it was a night away for my partner and I for my 40th, we just wanted chill time. Had a lovely swim & sauna, amazing food and fabulous atmosphere. The staff were helpful in every way and I would certainly recommend it and return ourselves x

Review 31:jacuzzi and steam room not working!

Review 32:The staff were increbibly helpful and available. Good to see in a time when people are cutting staff to cut costs, the hotel has bucked the trend and it really make s a difference to the quality of a stay

Review 33:Waiters were not attentive and could not understand our requests . Radio being played in restaurant whilst Halloween disco was heArd so it spoilt atmosphere

Review 34:Location and pool and bedroom clean

Review 35:Dining room experience for evening meal disappointing. Restaurant manager rude and unhelpful. Very busy at weekends which makes it difficult to find seating for bar snacks. Very difficult parking, no space for our car.

Review 36:comfortable beds, warm room with beautiful view, good bar food. reception staff friendly and helpful. Lovely friendly guy in the bar!

Review 37:same menu every night even the specials on offer didnt change. the steam room was not in order and leisure facilities need updating. restaurant staff not exactly clued up or very friendly although the younger staff were more efficient.

Review 38:location , cleanliness and comfort of the room

Review 39:On this occasion I booked through booking.com and got a good deal but with no cancellation. Over the days of my expected visit there was a flood and gale warning for Cumbria. As I was travelling from Middlesbrough l couldn't risk the journey. I thought under the circumstances the hotel would have shown some discression with my booking. I offered to rebook at a later date but they still charged me. My eldest son worked in the hotel business in London for some years and l know that hotels can have discression with some bookings. I am very disappointed and will not stay with you again and I will not recommend it either. Sue Haley.

Review 40:Steam room was out-of-order and pool temperature a bit low.

Review 41:Great location and very comfortable room with lovely views. Food was excellent and reasonable prices.

Review 42:Beer cellar 'flooded' so no draft beer. Parking a nightmare. Dogs in the residents lounge. Missed the self service coffee facility which used to be in the lounge, which I understand was removed due to mis-use.

Review 43:Excellent hotel, food and staff. Bedrooms had been re-decorated and were very smart.

Review 44:Parking was a severe problem. Not being able to help oneself to a decent sized cooked breakfast.

Review 45:Good accommodation.Central position for exploring historical places and wonderful countryside. We were delighted that dogs were welcome and intend to visit next year with our dog.

Review 46:Loved the ambience of the hotel. It was really warm and inviting and the staff were really friendly. I hope it doesn't change when the refurbishment has been completed.

Review 47:The room was very nice and the service was great. The desk clerk went out of his way to help us get a bus and train schedule and to show us were we could catch the correct bus so we could get back to London the next day.

Review 48:Bathroom in room 202 was a disgrace. In dire need of clean up and repairs to Jacuzzi bath. Unable to turn off towel drier radiator so room was hot through the night. Special small tv (but most BnB are like this nowadays). Parking was supposedly on a first come basis which is fair enough BUT there was several reserved parking spaces! We were supposed to stay 2 nights but left after 1 partly due the state of the room. Staff did not even enquire to why we were leaving early. To be honest we did not complain at the time so can not comment if our problems could have been rectified.

Review 49:In the lakes so its beautiful. Food in the bar was very hit/miss. Pool/Jacuzzi was nice BUT steam room not working. Gym was ok.

Review 50:Front of house Matthew had particularly good customer service, and I hope that this feedback gets to him, we arrived very late Friday night and he was extremely welcoming, made for a great start to our weekend ?

Review 51:Nothing - not even the rain could spoil our weekend.

Review 52:Previously stayed here before refurbishment and thought it was lovely, but the new rooms are stunning. Staff very friendly and helpful. Because we had the dog, we ate in the bar both nights, food was amazing and staff were incredible - especially Daniel, who made a point of fussing over the dog whenever possible and chatting about how our stay had been. Could not rate the hotel highly enough.

Review 53:Room was good but overfurnished - could not move around easily Noisy extractor fan from kitchen

Review 54:Staff friendliness Good breakfast Comfortable lounge

Review 55:Wifi could be better. The TV reception was not the best with the picture often breaking up

Review 56:Lovely lounge and very comfortable bed. Excellent food in the Lamb Inn

Review 57:Parking was difficult. Furniture in lounge had lots of small stains on it which spoiled the room for me.

Review 58:The single room was a pleasant surprise. Well furnished, full bathroom suite, good sized comfortable bed.

Review 59:This hotel has and continues to carry out a refurbishment, we stayed in the refurbished Ruskin Room, fantastic, high quality job, when the refit is completed it will move this hotel up a few notches.

Review 60:I wanted to check out on the Friday morning early but the person who should have been in didn't turn up I waited from 06.15 till 7..50. I had to leave before booking out which also made me late for work by 1hr 30 hrs not impressed. Breakfast not till 8.00 despite there being guests and workers like myself stopping there that needed to get to work

Review 61:Location , great value for money excellent food. Room was good

Review 62:Couple of finishing touches had been neglected; hole in bathroom door, smashed bathroom sink, and some furnishing were worse for wear.

Review 63:Beautiful location and very friendly staff. Hotel had good facilities. We loved the homely feel of this hotel.

Review 64:Courtyard restaurant needs a face lift. We're very dissapointed with the breakfast experience

Review 65:Position outstanding and the overview very good pub and glasshouse food great value

Review 66:bath was dirty, half full bottle of old beer on the balcony. Lots of bits of torn paper appeared on the balcony one day. Parking is awful.

Review 67:the Jacuzzi bath and the lovely staff.

Review 68:The restaurant where we had breakfast needed a bit of TLC. Carpet stained and needed hoovering and the spider webs needed removing from the walls!

Review 69:Nice staff, good location, good breakfast. The reception staff were particularly friendly and helpful.

Review 70:The hotel is currently being re-furbished which is partially complete. Although this did not impact upon our stay. The leisure suite is small and refurbishment yet to be commenced. The steam room was out of use. Also the sauna switched off for one of our days stay.

Review 71:We booked in for 2 nights in a 'club class room' We were upgraded to a suite which had recently been completely altered and re-furbished. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location, being in the middle of the village, was great. Well situated for local walks. Although we did not sample dinner in main restaurant the food in the conservatory and bar was very good.

Review 72:Only problem here is the parking, shame the hotel couldn't come to an arrangement with the local authority to use the public car parks at a reduced rate or something.

Review 73:The staff were extremely helpful, the room was fabulous and I would certainly stay there again.

Review 74:Not enough staff at breakfast time! Staff run off their feet so not their fault. Self service area not topped up with certain items so causing delays. Double room did not have 2 sets of towels! Glasshouse restaurant on a Sunday night had one steak and ale pie left at 6.30pm!! Food arrived at table only warm since was carried through by staff from kitchens - a plate cover would help. Wi-Fi advertised as throughout hotel but non-existent in bedroom on third floor.

Review 75:Good room, comfortable and nice lounge area downstairs. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast for choice!

Review 76:Sauna and shower were not working. No wifi in our rooms. Kids room was much smaller for the same price. Disappointed with menu choice so decided to eat elsewhere

Review 77:Room was comfortable Huge bed in our room which was lovely Room clean and in good condition

Review 78:Room decoration was in need of a refresh. Black mould on grouting and shower head. Dining room carpet was worn and filth. Breakfast service was chaotic - juices fruit etc not replenished in a timely fashion.

Review 79:Can't beat the location. Dinner in bar was good quality.

Review 80:Room was tired, bathroom had mould on ceiling and tiles. Cracked floor tiles. Room was definitely not to the standard shown when booking. Breakfast was ok, but not brilliant for price and service was poor.

Review 81:Nice Location, comfortable and relaxed, good facilities.

Review 82:Limited menu. Breakfast area crampt and staff rushed off their feet so quite a slow process to get served.

Review 83:Warm welcoming spacious updated rooms. Plenty of communal space. Used the pool. Liked the large lounge area with games and easy availability of the walks book to select from.

Review 84:Lovely, bright and tastefully decorated Hotel with friendly staff. Home from home atmosphere -we felt comfortable and welcome on arrival. Food was delicious and well presented.

Review 85:Despite the refurbishment the hotel is still very dated. We were in a newly refurbished room yet the bathroom was still the extremely old tired looking tiles and the bath didn't work. No toiletries. Paintwork scuffed and skirting boards tired - hadn't been painted despite the room walls having been painted. Rooms decent size but doors very thin so you can hear everybody that walks past your room.

Review 86:Location perfect! Pool and Jacuzzi ideal for relaxing!

Review 87:No bad experiences. Personally found the bed a bit soft and on the small side for 2 adults (and we aren't large...) and also the room was very warm despite heating off and no other obvious source. But these are personal preferences so would not bring them to the hotels attention.

Review 88:Location is excellent. Spa and swimming pool was a treat. Room was lovely (if a little warm) with balcony view to the scenery beyond. Cosy feather and down duvet and pillows. Lovely lounge area, lively pub on premises and a more formal dining area. A great place to unwind and I would love to come back for a cosy winter weekend.

Review 89:The WiFi kept dropping out and was unusable I had to resort to using my phones data The car park filled up really fast and when I did get parked I was constantly blocked in by staff and customer vehicles The pub meals were cold and uncooked at times but things were rectified quickly

Review 90:The staff where all great and seemed to care for what you needed The pool area was clean and tidy and quiet The food was great in the restaurant

Review 91:Parking was very difficult. I spent a long time parking fairly nearby, as I am disabled. Next time I visit, I will book a parking space, a long time before my visit.

Review 92:A wonderful suite, with four rooms. the bed was very big and very comfortable. The staff were very Friendly and helpful.

Review 93:Not enough parking space.

Review 94:We were in the Ruskin suite and got a lovely suprise when we walked into our room, it was really nice. My wife did not know where we were going until we got there and she was very happy with her surprise.

Review 95:The room wasn't as 'romantic' as I requested..mainly the bathroom was a let down as I was expecting a nice big bath which was a shame also there was a big crack in the bathroom sink. The continental breakfast was very poor and over priced, it was fresh either and the bread was cold.

Review 96:The room was comfortable and the views were fab at one side. Great little village and had everything we needed

Review 97:The only thing that could have been improved was there is a chip in the bathroom sink and a little mildew round the shower but that is being picky.

Review 98:We enjoyed everything. We were upgraded to the Coleridge. Great size room with a really comfy bed. Staff were great in the bar and reception. Bar area lovely.great location near to cafes bars and shops. Definitely recommend.

Review 99:Due to renovation work in hotel lounge felt very cramped, previous time we stayed there lounge very comfortable.

Review 100:hotel very good and staff welcoming, nice base for walking holiday, beautiful village.

Review 101:We stayed in the Ruskin and it was fabulous. We were the first people to stay in it since it had been refurbished. It's on the 3rd floor and has lovely views and excellent facilities including a separate lounge/dining room. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower. The staff were all very helpful. All in all a great choice of hotel!

Review 102:no just as i said parking the only one thing it was not the hotel it was booking .com when i asked them about the needs my wife had to have been disabled they did not get back to me at first i had to ask and ask if it was ok then when i t got very close to the day we where going i got a email saying it was ok

Review 103:it was in the centre but it was the parking first come first gets one

Review 104:Could not be accommodated for a meal on our last evening, despite requesting places for dinner fairly early on in the afternoon, apparently because of some large party booking.

Review 105:Excellent, polite service. Rooms very well maintained.

Review 106:In our bathroom the bath was an old whirlpool type which did not work and therefore cannot be clean in the pipes. It would not be hygienic to have a bath nand it looked a bit dirty... but the shower was ok.

Review 107:This hotel has a pool and a spa which was brilliant after a day's walk.

Review 108:Check-in was only at 3pm which seems rather late and I was kept waiting to the dot of 3pm even though I suspect my room was ready earlier. The Wifi was so unreliable in the room that it may as well have not even been there. The hotel was a bit old fashioned and stuffy for my liking

Review 109:The Lakes District is a beautiful area but Grasmere itself didn't have a lot to it particularly no great little English pubs within the village itself. In future I would much rather stay in Ambleside or Keswick

Review 110:Superb - beautiful location - thoroughly recommended - very hard working and pleasant staff who seemed to work long hours! Grasmere is perfect for the chill out - recommend BW

Review 111:The food in the restaurant wasn't very good. Food was served lukewarm, plates were always cold and simpler dishes and vegetables served with the main meals would have completed the meal.

Review 112:The location of the property, it's facilities and proximity to everything made this the ideal place to stay.

Review 113:The steam room was out of order. Our hotel room did require updating and a lick of paint - not like how the rooms look like in the pictures - some previous reviews have mentioned this so it was to be expected

Review 114:The hotel was nice and was in a nice village location.

Review 115:Although I thought it expensive it was probably reasonable value for Grasmere which is a very expensive place to stay.

Review 116:I liked everything but I did find it expensive.

Review 117:Lack of car parking a nightmare, and cost in some of the local car parks high at £8 for 24 hours. Provision of swimming pool great, but is accessed down a steep flight of stairs, didn't want to risk slipping, also area is unmanned.

Review 118:Meals very good,I ate in the restaurant.standard of room good and clean.Staff extremely helpful, dealt with queries well.

Review 119:none

Review 120:friendly helpful staff food lovely made our stay very special lovely hotel lovely room too very comfy would like to see more hot chocolate sachets in room as i dont drink tea or coffee

Review 121:This room was bit comfortable. We could not fully open wardrobe doors as they jammed against bed and we had to sit on side of bed to do so. Only one bedside table so my partner had to keep passing my cup of tea, glasses and book. It was very awkward to get clothes out of wardrobe so I left most in case. We also paid extra for our little dog who got no benefits. We just got a poor room. We are planning to go back to grasmere soon but now uncertain as to where to stay.

Review 122:Brilliant location- 4th time we have been and second time in red line hotel. First time room was spacious and excellent view.

Review 123:No complaints but thought the pool area needed some real work and the changing area very old fashioned. Bonus was I was there on my own. Room a bit tiny but lovely views

Review 124:Site in the village. Food good. Staff good in evening, Nice seating areas to have a coffee and a read.

Review 125:Very limited parking, no view from the room, no headboard in the room. Pool closes too early at 7pm. Steam room wasn't functioning, gym facilities inadequate. Grasmere in general was very expensive

Review 126:Very clean, nice location

Review 127:I had a meal in The Lamb Inn which is part of the hotel and the meal was very poor.

Review 128:I love the location and the hotel is very nice. The pool is great and the breakfasts are lovely.

Review 129:never a bad experience, but too costly to take small pet dog at £20 per night-£100 for 5 nights. had his own doggy bed and does not cast hairs- too expensive!!

Review 130:location-always a pleasure to visit this area.

Review 131:The breakfast area tables not cleared quickly enough meaning people had to wait for a table. Bacon an tomato were cold, omlette was greasy. Pub adjoining food left a lot to be desired cold and 10oz steak looked more like a 4oz.

Review 132:Location was very good

Review 133:Very limited parking so had to park in fee paying car park overnight and 'rescue' the car in the morning.

Review 134:Good position in nice village. Breakfast good.

Review 135:Brilliant central location in the gorgeous Grasmere village. Rooms have been refurbished to a high standard. Very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast cooked to perfection! Overall a lovely hotel and a great stay with family.

Review 136:Overcrowding in the restaurant at breakfast. Obviously overworked waiting staff and having to wait ages for simple straightforward orders. Incompletely baked bread in the bread basket.

Review 137:Excellent location for adventurous walking.
