Reviews for The Gables Bed & Breakfast

Review 1:Nothing

Review 2:Lovely cosy room when we arrived on cold wet evening-,had wonderful bubble bath in the enormous bathroom that soon warmed me up! It was a very spacious suite, better than a hotel! Friendly and helpful hosts and yummy breakfast. Will definately come here again.

Review 3:The steep drive up the lane to get to the house! 22% slope! Worth it though as our stay was very enjoyable.

Review 4:The whole experience was great, Sue met us with tea and biscuits and gave us lots of information about the area. Our suite was very comfortable and had lovely views across the valley. Breakfasts were delicious.

Review 5:Steep hill up to the B &B but it kept Ilya fit .

Review 6:The Gables was a very friendly place to stay, nothing was too much trouble. Comfy bed . The room had all the comforts and lots of little extras . Perfect location to go out and about . Well recommended .

Review 7:The bed was a bit soft for my liking but that's just me other may find them fine

Review 8:The owners were very helpful, rooms were great, breakfast very nice

Review 9:Everything was brilliant. Nothing to complain about.

Review 10:The B&B was beautiful, The owner's were so friendly and lovely. Very accomadating and arranged our room especially with a travel cot for our baby. Very happy with our stay.

Review 11:The views were spectacular but this did mean that you had to go up narrow windy roads, which were difficult in the dark. Food very good and beds comfy. People running the B&B very helpful. Nice walks nearby.

Review 12:N/A

Review 13:Great location just outside of Matlock. The owners were lovely and friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The room was a good size, clean and comfortable; the view from the corridor across the valley was beautiful. The breakfast was delicious and all from local sources.

Review 14:We enjoyed it all.

Review 15:We received a warm and friendly welcome, accompanied by tea and hom made cake. The bedrooms and bathrooms were very well appointed, and the beds very comfortable. There was a good selection for breakfast and nothing was too much trouble.

Review 16:It was just a bit disappointing to have no chairs at all in our king sized room. Also, I always like Museli for breakfast, but a packet of Alpen is a bit too sweetened for me (this is a very minor point!)

Review 17:Very comfortable quiet night. Excellent shower and fittings in bathroom.

Review 18:Our bed was noisy and a little uncomfortable but ok for one night My wife had a couple of hairs in her breakfast possibly from the cat

Review 19:Very friendly great breakfast amazing view

Review 20:Didn't like the car parking; access is from a steep narrow road.

Review 21:The view is wonderful from the patio at the front and enjoyed sitting there after a long journey in the car just watching the world go by.

Review 22:Beautiful location, friendly warm welcome and superb breakfast, wish we could have stayed longer, as it was just an overnight stop over en route to Newcastle

Review 23:This is a fantastic place to stay. Sue and her husband are excellent hosts and nothing is too much to ask; from an impromptu cup of tea on the patio to a recommendation of somewhere to eat, we felt very well looked after. The breakfast was fantastic and the room (Bakewell) was exceptionally comfortable. Marvellous shower!

Review 24:Bit of a trek up to the property but not a big problem. Lovely walks around.

Review 25:Very welcome and friendly owners; couldn't do more to help us. Tea and cake on arrival and lovely cooked breakfast both mornings. Modern furnishings and excellent facilities.

Review 26:The drive up to the B&B is very steep, narrow and windy. However, we were aware of this beforehand due to previous comments posted. Personally - we think the drive up to the B&B was well worth it for the views (as well as the stay).

Review 27:Sue and John (the owners) were very helpful and accommodating. Very comfortable, clean and pleasant room (including the bed!). Beautiful views (we stayed in the Derwent Suite) Excellent breakfast - with choice of menu.

Review 28:Nothing! Drive was s bit whiteknuckle at the end!

Review 29:Everything! The room and bathroom were of an exceptional standard, everything had been thought about with attention to detail and comfortin mind. Sue and john were lovely - helped us finding a table at a puband the breakfast was delicious

Review 30:Everything - from the friendly welcome to the very comfortable room to the excellent breakfast and the resident cat. We did need the gps coordinates to find The Gables which is on a very steep hill (and so has fine views), but it was very worthwhile.

Review 31:Matlock we were first time stay was very dissopointed with facilities local pub not open and nowhere to get an evening meal so was hungry at teatime due to location

Review 32:Hotel was lovely very friendly my dad Daniel booked this foe a break

Review 33:Neither of us found the bed comfortable and therefore didn't sleep well, but this is of course personal preference. The owners hadn't noticed that the fruit they served up at breakfast was definitely way past it's best!

Review 34:All areas were spotlessly clean, the owners were happy to go out of their way to accommodate our requests in the breakfast room and happily chatted with us about local attractions and walks.

Review 35:only bad thing was we couldn't stay longer :-)

Review 36:absolutely loved our stay here, we had a lovely warm welcome, beautiful views and just a short walk away from matlock bath. would definitely recommend

Review 37:Have some health issues so the location was difficult but did provide some spectacular views

Review 38:The room and breakfast were both to a high standard as was the friendly atmosphere.

Review 39:Friendly owner, met with tea and cake on arrival, nothing was too much trouble. Excellent choice for breakfast, cooked beautifully. Room was spotless, lovely hot shower

Review 40:None

Review 41:Sue and John are the perfect hosts. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The rooms were very comfortable and the attention to detail was excellent. Food was lovely Sue is a great cook (or was it John?). Would definitely recommend to stay there.

Review 42:The room was small but comfortable, TV wifi and tea tray - a lovely shower room and fabulous soft fluffy towels - we didn't want for anything! The breakfasts were lovely and the patio area outside was utter bliss! A real home from home!

Review 43:Everything was great. We we're a little frustrated by the lack of a decent internet signal, but for one night we didn't mind. To be fair though, we didn't ask the owners about wifi. The drive up to the building is quite steep, but it's worth it once you're there. You are told about this before you book, so we were aware.

Review 44:The accommodation was excellent, breakfast delicious and the owners were lovely and very helpful. It's in a beautiful location, high up with magnificent views. We would definitely stay there again.

Review 45:The proprietors were very welcoming and helpful. Our room, the Derwent Suite was fantastic. Panoramic view of the Derwent valley. Modern bath and a very comfortable bed. Super place.

Review 46:We stayed in the suite which had a fantastic view over Matlock Bath. Very comfortable, light and pretty. The owners are very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome with a lovely home made cake and a pot of tea when we arrived. The roll top bath and shower are great. The breakfast was a variety of choices and my husband had a full English breakfast whilst I opted for continental and both were freshly cooked and presented very nicely. We walked to the nearest pub for our evening meal which was very friendly and food was nice too. Wished we had more nights booked but will definitely go back.

Review 47:Fab. owner, welcoming and friendly. Great little place not far from the centre of Matlock. WiFi that works! Tea and cake if you arrive in time (most welcome after the drive). Love it, would use again when in the area,

Review 48:Everything here was just stunning. The warm welcome with tea and coffee and a chat. The views which are just amazing. The comfort in the room and the facilities. The breakfast. It's all perfect. I have no idea why anyone would ever be anything other than happy here.

Review 49:There were two minus points for us. The first was that the walls between the rooms were very thin so we could hear the people in the next room talking. On our first night there, the couple next door had a young baby who was a bit unsettled and we could hear him quite clearly. The other downside was that the bathroom was really cold. We did stay in March but the bathroom was quite newly fitted so we found it strange that it didn't have adequate heating, and it would have made such a difference.

Review 50:We stayed in the Derwent Suite which was really lovely. The owners were very nice and the B&B itself was very nicely decorated. Breakfast was great (although a little on the early side!). The view from our room was amazing. You can walk to the local pub which took us about 10 minutes. The roads were very steep but that added to the fun! Make sure you take your walking boots! You can also walk down to Matlock Bath through the fields, which took about 20 minutes or so.

Review 51:The suite was amazingly luxurious and clean and felt like ultimate relaxation. We didn't mind the occasional bad weather bouts because we thoroughly enjoyed spending time at The Gables and just relaxing loads. Our hosts were extremely warm and welcoming and we'd definitely recommend it to friends!

Review 52:It was quiet. The scenery was spectacular. The owners were fantastic. We had tea and cake when we first arrived and it was delicious. We went to the admiral pub for lunch and walked back up. We don't mind walking but some will find it a struggle up the hill to the b n b but were used to steep hills. You want nice scenery to look down on then you got to have a hill but its well worth it looking down onto matlock bath. The breakfast was served between 8.30 and 9.30 and was delicious, the vege option was lovely and most of the food is locally Sourced. We will definitely go back.

Review 53:We had a lovely stay at The Gables. The room was comfortable, clean and stylish. The owners were friendly and helpful, suggesting local walks and places to visit. We had to make an early start on our last day and we still had a delicious cooked breakfast despite being earlier than they normally serve. Thank you for a fantastic stay!

Review 54:The room was a little bit cold due to the size and only a small radiator

Review 55:The views from our room was amazing, bathroom was gorgeous and the bed was so comfy

Review 56:John and Sue were great hosts nice pot of tea and cake on arrival, told us all the local places to visit, superb breakfast would highly recommend.

Review 57:We will definitely be returning to The Gables. The hospitality is second to none, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was beautiful, very comfortable. One of the nicest places ive stayed by far.

Review 58:The only downside is the location. It's situated at the top of a very steep hill with quite tight roads leading up to it. Slightly awkward to park too. It was very cold & quite icy when we visited so that didn't help really

Review 59:Brilliant views over Matlock. Very friendly owners who are happy to help with anything. Excellent breakfast. Nice local pub too. Would recommend but just be careful on the hill leading up to the B&B....very steep.

Review 60:Nothing!

Review 61:wonderful view - shame we couldn't see it through the mist! Felt very welcomed, and would recommend The White Lion pub further down on hill. Really sweet little room, felt very attended to. Very clean, and lovely breakfast cooked for us that morning. highly recommended

Review 62:It's not a dislike. Others have also commented on the very steep, narrow drive up. I think it feels a little unnerving the first time because you're concentrating on the drive and keeping an eye out for The Gables but if you were staying more than one night you'd know what to expect and be perfectly confident.

Review 63:The hosts, Sue & John are approachable, kind and helpful. The room had everything I needed, was clean and very well presented. Breakfast will really set you up for the day. I'd definitely stay at The Gables again.

Review 64:The only drawback was the steepness of Riber Lane! First gear was best round the Z-bends. It was best to drive past the car park if going up, turn round and drive in. Then reverse out onto the road (usually traffic free) to go downhill.

Review 65:Nicely appointed rooms Sue and John very welcoming Super sausages and poached eggs!

Review 66:The staff were soo friendly. They are always happy to help.whole place is really clean and we'll presented.the view is outstanding. Breakfast is amazing, top quality food.cannot wait to stay again.

Review 67:The road to the property is very steep but well worth it.!

Review 68:My daughter, who has learning disabilities, and her PA stayed overnight at the Gables for a overnight break in the area. They were very pleased with all aspects of their stay and it was very friendly place to stay. They loved the views from the B&B and would definitely stay again.

Review 69:Absolutely nothing to dislike about our stay what so ever

Review 70:Very clean, very friendly and very comfortable.wonderful breakfast and lovely hosts.will come back

Review 71:We received a lovely warm welcome from Sue on our arrival and was then shown to our room which was bright and spacious and beautifully decorated. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend

Review 72:The B&B is reached by a winding road that is steep in places. It is not difficult to drive and should not put you off but is good to know about. We found it a bit of fun! The view from the Gables front yard is worth the drive.

Review 73:Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, everything was perfect! Friendly and welcoming hosts, luxurious bedroom and bathroom, extremely comfortable bed, delicious breakfast, fabulous view over the valley. I look forward to staying at The Gables again!

Review 74:The road up to the property is steep and winding.

Review 75:The location is stunning, and the facilities very comfortable. We were made very welcome. Good choice at breakfast.

Review 76:We had a GPS and still got lost finding The Gables. I should have asked exactly where it was located when I booked.

Review 77:The owners were fantastic. When we arrived we were offered coffee or tea and we sat and relaxed in the outdoor area with a beautiful view of Matlock. Our room was lovely and the breakfast was great. I would certainly recommend The Gables as a place to stay.

Review 78:I'm not a good driver at night - and the road up was a bit scary for me the first time I drove it - in the dark. It was steep and bendy. However there are plans to widen the access - so that will be resolved in the future. Also - to be honest in daylight the road was fun and the views were wonderful

Review 79:The helpfulness and care received from Sue and John was exceptional. The room was lovely - the bed soft with a wonderful duvet that I could snuggle down into - everything was immaculate. And the shower-room was lovely - I could have stayed under the shower for hours!!!! Breakfast was excellent too.

Review 80:Approach to the property which our sat nav supplied was up very steep hill (22%) with hairpin bends - pretty disconcerting! Best to approach from the Tansley side rather than up from Matlock.

Review 81:Beautiful room, lovely bathroom, comfortable bed and excellent breakfast. Very helpful owner gave us alternative route to get back after dark avoiding the hairpin bends.

Review 82:Nothing to moan at!!!! [joking]

Review 83:The coffee and cake on arrival was so good and a very nice surprise. The selection of teas and REAL coffee in the bedroom was class, everything else was of the same standard- with a smile.

Review 84:A littlebit outside the village, car with GPS needed! Maybe too many cats hair in the breakfast, but otherwise good cleaning. No toys or things for children to do.

Review 85:Very nice and pleasant people who always where smiling and helpful. Good rooms and beds. Good breakfast! Perfect service!

Review 86:Excellent location and B&B facilities with wonderful views over surrounding countryside and great place for starting walks. Out of town of course but pub not far away. Bit tricky to find but all part of the charm. Very friendly and helpful owner.

Review 87:What a lovely place to stay with the most stunning panoramic views. We were welcomed with complimentary tea, coffee, juice for the children and home made chocolate cake taken on the terrace..... absolute bliss after an active day. Our rooms were clean, comfortable with a high standard of en-suite facilities in each....slippers also provided for weary feet. Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order, nothing was to much trouble particularly with two fussy grandchildren. The breakfast table was set with matching crockery and a proper cotton table cloth ( instead of a miss match of crockery and paper tablecloth. .....this wouldn't matter to most I'm sure, however it shows a high standard of care and thought in my eyes). For any prospective guests wishing to visit Derbyshire please try the gables you will not be disappointed.

Review 88:Road to the guest house is steep with sharp bends which means you need to be extra cautious when driving.

Review 89:Wonderful warm welcome. Nicely appointed rooms and friendly and helpful hosts. Would certainly return.

Review 90:the steep and winding road up to the B&B but well worth it when you get there, don't let it put you off but good to know in advance

Review 91:What's not to like? Wonderful hosts, fab breakfasts, pretty & comfy rooms. Nothing was too much trouble, would definitely go back

Review 92:Location difficult to access. Parking very tricky from one direction. Bedroom seemed cold until under duvet. (Not helped by road closure due to gasworks)

Review 93:Friendly and helpful at all times. Excellent breakfast and attention to other needs.

Review 94:I should researched the location more as it was very hilly but in a way it was a nice surprise as the views were stunning

Review 95:The rooms were excellent and clean, comfortable with fantastic views.

Review 96:all of it, the food, freindly proprieters, lovely room,, whole thing really nice and modern and clean and comfortable. very peaceful. bit hilly, you do need a car but lovely outlook over the dales. i would definately stay here again.

Review 97:Everything - hosts were delightful very friendly - greeted with cake and strawberries! - beautifully appointed room - great breakfast - even took us down to and collected us from Matlock when we went to dinner - etc :

Review 98:Small room, but there was access to a lounge. Breakfast a bit too formal and restaurant like. A cereal and juice bar would be good. Finding the property without a street number could be challenging.

Review 99:Friendly reception and a good pub meal within walking distance

Review 100:Great location, very scenic. Comfy bed and great shower!

Review 101:friendly, clean and cofortable. Superb breakfast!

Review 102:If we are in the area again we know where to stay. Excellent food in pub down the hill.
