Reviews for Grouse & Claret by Marston's Inns
Review 1:Nothing
Review 2:The staff was really helpful .very good location and cleanliness.... The breakfast was really nice ..... We enjoyed our stay and would recommend everyone to chose this place if they are visiting the peaks ....
Review 3:Cobweb in corner of bedroom. Dated bathroom with lots of mould and frayed curtain at bathroom window. We were 3 couples who wanted to have a few drinks in the bar after dinner but were effectively packed off to bed at 9:20 when the management said because we were the only people in the bar, they wanted to close it. Not impressed!!!!!!!
Review 4:Large bedroom with very comfortable bed. Nicely decorated room. Staff were lovely, good service in restaurant for dinner and food was nice.
Review 5:Closed restaurant early so we couldn't get an evening meal. Had to drive 5 miles to get a meal. Disappointed with that although manager did refund our meal off our bill which was nice
Review 6:Looked nice. Room clean and tidy. Handy being near shopping centre.
Review 7:Wash basins didn't hold water due to leaky plugs Shower temperature fluctuated
Review 8:Really lovely bedroom with very comfy bed. Excellent, helpful staff Great cooked breakfast included
Review 9:Staircase decoration and carpets need updating as this is the first impression when going to rooms There were 8 of us on 2 tables of 4 for breakfast ,1 breakfast on each table didn't come until the rest had finished theirs, we had to ask twice where the breakfasts were only to be told they had missed them off. This was reflected in the bill after requesting could something be reimbursed for our inconvenience.
Review 10:Nice and warm and fluffy towels Rooms adequate
Review 11:Bedroom 2. Directly above the kitchen ventilator. On the second night it was not turned off - kept us awake until the Kitchen staff came in the following morning and turned it off.
Review 12:The Staff - very, very friendly and efficient
Review 13:There was far to much noise when in the room which made sleep impossible. The room was very small and the bathroom tiny which was an issue. The bed was also very uncomfortable.
Review 14:The staff were very friendly and the menu was excellent.
Review 15:Needs some updating especially windows which need to be double glazed
Review 16:location only 3 miles from Chatsworth and 5 miles from Matlock Restaurant in pub with real ales cosy and meals reasonably priced
Review 17:We felt it was a bit overpriced. The room was a bit tired-looking, as was the bathroom. The noise and smells from the kitchen below were a bit off-putting!
Review 18:The staff were friendly (especially the manager chap) and the breakfast was great.
Review 19:Don't book Room 2. It is over the Kitchen ventilator fan. On our second night it was not turned off by the Kitchen staff when they went home. Not much sleep.
Review 20:The Staff - Very, very Friendly.
Review 21:There was no heating in Room 6. The ancient storage heater under the bedroom window gave out no warmth, so we had a poor night's sleep. In the morning, we noticed that the corridor outside our room was very warm ........ so there was heating in the hotel, but not in our room. The following morning the bedroom window was dripping in condensation - it had obviously been a cold night! Also, we decided not to use the shower in the ensuite because of the mouldy grouting.
Review 22:Convenient location
Review 23:It comes across more as a pub restaurant with some rooms rather than an hotel (even the check in is done at the bar/pub desk even if they call a portion of it Reception..) and I felt it was a bit expensive in terms of value for money.
Review 24:Nice pub restaurant in the evening with nice atmosphere and nice staff, good location, decent rooms.
Review 25:Everything - excellent staff very welcoming,friendly,good food,clean & comfortable room.Good location,idealfor Chatsworth & surrounding area:)
Review 26:Waiting time for food. Although it seemed very busy on the night. The staff were still very attentive and apologised for any day we had.
Review 27:The setting and friendly manner of the staff.
Review 28:Outside the main towns so you are limited to what you could do in the evenings. The rooms were large and did not have that homely feeling
Review 29:A pleasant environment and interesting staff. The food was basic but O.K. There was a good atmosphere within the bars and eating rooms.
Review 30:I found the beer not to my liking too light and citrusy, I prefer darker and heavier beers, for a major brewer a big mistake.
Review 31:We found the staff, very pleasant, friendly and helpful. The food was good although typically large chain hotel menu.
Review 32:The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and spacious, bathroom was large and importantly the shower was very good. The food was very good value for money
Review 33:Bear cooler was noisey which was under our window at rear of hotel. Toilet seat would not stay up . No clock in room which we would of liked.
Review 34:Staff were welcoming and friendly. Good size car park, good location. Room was very nice, bathroom was small. Breakfast and evening meal was lovely.
Review 35:We were in room 1 which is over the kitchen and a touch noisy. But the noise subsided by about 10pm and didn't start too early, so our sleep wasn't disturbed.
Review 36:Good value for money, good location
Review 37:Some of the waiting staff not so helpful.Slow in acknowledging that we were waiting to be serviced in the restaurant.
Review 38:Richard was excellent. Always made sure we were happy.
Review 39:Staff a little cold. Restaurant menu a little basic.
Review 40:Good location, good breakfast, comfortable bed. Room updated with new electric wiring, coffee/tea/cookies.
Review 41:Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Location was excellent for visiting Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Matlock - just what we wanted. Food was very good value for money and good quality.
Review 42:The en-suite was tired and in need of decorating. The room could be noisy with sounds emanating from the bar and on site machinery but all had virtually died down by the time we went to bed.
Review 43:The bedroom was cosy, warm and comfortable. The food was typically pub grub with the added benefit of a rotisserie. The food was good value for money.
Review 44:Room was up 2 flights of narrow steep stairs The meal we had in the evening was not nice Constant banging on wall due to door to kitchen downstairs
Review 45:The staff serving the breakfast were very friendly and breakfast quite nice
Review 46:Rooms were tired. We had a ''spacious family room" but it wasn't spacious and had a rather uncomfortable double bed and an extremely uncomfortable single sofa bed. The sofa bed wasn't made up despite me stating we were a family and I had to ask 3 times for it to be made up. It was made up eventually but long after the children's bedtime. The staff were very pleasant but seemed under staffed, hence the delay. The food was of poor quality and when they say the burger is served with coleslaw and chips they mean it - not a side salad in sight. The ramekin the coleslaw came in was without exaggeration the diameter of a two pence coin - if you're going to be that stingy just don't bother putting it on! The overall experience was a shame really because the location and property have the potential to be so much better.
Review 47:Location was great. Lovely beer garden and play area. Pub downstairs nicely decorated and looked newly refurbished.
Review 48:Poor service in the dining room on the first night 30+ minutes for tab,e to be cleared . Surly waiter . Manager refunded the cost of the meal and made sure we had better service the following night.
Review 49:Good location. We were at the Chatsworth country fair which is a 10 minute drive away. Clean room and fairly comfortable.
Review 50:Cobwebs and spiders in bathroom, we had to set up the sofa bed, after being told it would be sorted, then had to wait ages for the bedding. We want to put our son to bed but had to wait longer due to waiting
Review 51:The location and was accommodating for my two young children
Review 52:If was quite noisy (room 01) due to some generator or air con unit outside our window in courtyard below
Review 53:Very friendly and helpful manager, he was great. Lovely room, hot powerful shower and a bath.
Review 54:not a great problem, but access from bar area and rear access to accommodation has a few "blind" door intersections wiith doors opening into each other
Review 55:reasonable "pub" accommodation, excellent dining - breakfast and evening meals were very good, Room comfortable size, bathroom large. Handy to many attractions.
Review 56:Misleading. I booked this thinking it was in Matlock. That's what the address said. Couldn't find it according to sat nav. Had to stop in garage and ask for directions
Review 57:Not enough Staff on at breakfast the one girl who was on was running about like a headless chicken trying to serve at least 7 tables ,she had a fall and being a first aider i asked for the first aid box for a sling to hold up her arm she hurt whilst falling before her going to hospital it was never brought to me
Review 58:Lovely hotel, comfortable room and food was good
Review 59:noisy kitchen extractor right outside our room window. continual door banging which seemed to be from the kitchen fairly bland menu and long wait for service at the bar as only one member of staff on duty. breakfast disappointing only one cup of coffee offered which we had to ask for when half way through breakfast as it had been forgotten, one slice of toast on breakfast plate so what was the point of offering a selection of jam when there was no toast to put them on.
Review 60:clean room very comfortable.
Review 61:We stayed in room number one above the service door which constantly banged very loudly all day, and woke us up at 7am! We did talk to management and had one night refunded.
Review 62:Helpful staff comfortable rooms nice breakfast and in a good location over all pleasant stay.
Review 63:Rooms could do with some modernization. The room I was in was above the kitchen, could hear the door banging constantly but this was only during the day time.
Review 64:Excellent beer garden, beautiful location, very close to Chatsworth House.
Review 65:Nothing, but being a pub it had no facilities, e.g. Lounge, leisure facilities. Otherwise it was good.
Review 66:The location was very good, staff were very obliging, good food
Review 67:The bed had seen better days the wifi was of poor quality the front rooms were too hot and noisey.everything was good other than be
Review 68:All was good other than what I've commented below pleasant stay
Review 69:The mattress was too hard and springy which was uncomfortable and the bed was high my husband had back surgery a year ago but the bed was uncomfortable and even rolled off a few times which he was in agony with his back evening meal wasn't very nice and not much to do in the area
Review 70:The room was lovely and clean and en-suite was ok breakfast was lovely
Review 71:The only thing I can criticise is the bathroom. The grouting in the shower area could have done with a good clean and there was a lot of condensation damage around the window frame.
Review 72:Good location close to Bakewell Matlock and Chatsworth. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 73:The tiles in the shower were filthy and obviously had not been cleaned properly. There were brown smear marks on the window ledge next to the toilet accompanied by a pubic hair!! Obviously cleaning is not top priority at this pub. The manager was ineffective and seemed out of his depth in his role. We have stayed at many marstons inns, including this one and have always been happy with them but standards have fallen dramatically in this one.
Review 74:Leaving
Review 75:Not enough choice for breakfast considering trying to compete with other hotels, minimal staff on in the mornings, but as the business appeared to cater more for caravan holiday makers which we were not aware off, this level of service is now understood.
Review 76:The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, the shower was hot.
Review 77:Room was very warm perhaps they could provide a fan. Address booking.com has on the booking confirmation was different to their own so it took us a while to find it!!!!!!
Review 78:Good value for money. Staff were friendly.
Review 79:Nothing we didn't like but we would recommend putting fans in the rooms as it was muggy in the night and with the window open it didn't help much.
Review 80:The Marstons pub and Hotel provides very good food at good prices. The staff were friendly, welcoming and professional. The room was comfortable, clean with good facilities and WiFi. It also has a campsite which we will return to use too.
Review 81:Lack of information on arrival and during our stay. We only saw the breakfast menu once, midway through our stay, until then we didn't know that there was a breakfast choice. All tables for breakfast had reserved on them with no explanation until we asked and found out that the reserved sign meant they were for people staying at Inn. A hotel information pack in each room may be a good idea.
Review 82:The rooms were a good size and very clean. The menus offered were very reasonable and the food quality was good, along with the atmosphere. We would stay there again.
Review 83:Rooms at back over bar area are noisy due to cooling fans (for kitchen area) cutting in all through the night.
Review 84:Easy to get to local attractions. Friendly staff. Good breakfast.
Review 85:Food in the restaurant was disappointing, though they got super busy as soon as we ordered, which may explain it.
Review 86:Good sized room, sensible shower, child friendly, breakfast included, good beer.
Review 87:We were in room 1 which was very noisy as it was above the kitchen and we were not told this Some tables in the restaurant were too close to each other. The cleanliness in the room could of been better, window sills were dirty. Bathroom floor could of fond with a sweep & mop.
Review 88:The beer garden was nice. The selection of beers was ok. There's ample car parking spaces. The staff were friendly.
Review 89:Our room was tired & in need of refurbishing. The carpet to the bathroom was loose & the brass runner was up & bent. I think it was because it was for family & Children.( under 5 ). The quilt had a mark on both sides. Other than that it was o/k. Some of The other guests told me that their rooms where o/k
Review 90:The staff was very friendly & helpful, The restaurant was nice and cheerful. The ambience was good and inviting The food was good & reasonably priced
Review 91:Room was above the main door and it was very noisy as it kept banging every time someone came in and out.
Review 92:Staff were excellent, very friendly and food was excellent too.
Review 93:We are a family with two older children. The family suite is only suitable for a family of three as the fold out bed is a twin. My daughter and I had to share is while my husband and son slept on the double. The staff wa apologetic and said it happens a lot at booking.com has it listed as a family room.
Review 94:The staff was great and the place and restaurant nice. I would recommend based on that.
Review 95:The morning coffee at breakfast was typical of a coffee vending machine. Other than that everything else was very good.
Review 96:The general ambience of the hotel. A very comfortable and pleasant stopover. The restaurant is very good both in quality and value for money.
Review 97:Manager went out of his way to help with cases after a long and difficult journey and made us feel welcome. Much appreciated. Staff in the restaurant were all friendly and efficient.
Review 98:Ripped net curtains in our bedroom. Black mildew around the windows.
Review 99:Downstairs the bar and restaurant area was nicely decorated. Having breakfast in the conservatory each morning was lovely.
Review 100:Replace the shower screen on the bath so it seals and doesn't wet the floor. Install a better facility to combat the condensation in the bathroom. Provide a bathmat.
Review 101:Very pleasant staff, car parking good with good access to hotel/pub, great food.
Review 102:We were staying over night in the hotel & had our evening meal at the pub after a day out, the young lady that looked after us throughout our meal was really pleasant, she took a little time to ask us about our stay & generally gave us great service.
Review 103:Our room was above the kitchen and unfortunately the door was banging a lot when we were in our room late evening.
Review 104:Lliked the evening meal and breakfast. Room decorated nicely and bathroom and shower very good.
Review 105:My room was directly above the kitchen. There was a lot of door slamming and crashing around that felt like it went on all night.
Review 106:Friendly helpful staff, clean room, and a reasonably priced restaurant serving good food.
Review 107:Very happy with our stay at the Grouse & Claret, the staff were very helpful and friendly and the room was lovely. It was very convenient having a restaurant on the premises. We enjoyed all our meals during our stay.
Review 108:Minor point, but it would be good to have a separate area for booking in rather than the main bar.
Review 109:Attentive staff. Main bar is large with plenty of seating, Good atmosphere
Review 110:The room although clean and comfortable was in need of repair and redecoration, particularly the bathroom.
Review 111:Very good breakfast and evening meal with very friendly and helpful staff. In a very good position for visiting the sites of Derbyshire and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
Review 112:My impression is that the Grouse and Claret is first and formost a restaurant and then an Inn. There are only a few rooms (8 I believe). The rooms whilst really confortable could do with a fresh lick of paint. Breakfast was very slow, the cooked breakfast was excellent but the staff serving didn't seem to have much of a clue (training needed) the Manager was very good though and couldnt do enough for us....if the rest of his staff were the same our breakfast would have been a much more pleasant experience.
Review 113:This Inn has a large carpark, is very well located for visiting Bakewell and Chatsworth House (10 mins away). The rooms were furnished with everything you need for a short stay. The bed was really confortable. Definitely good value for money...the dinners at the Grouse and Claret were superb.
Review 114:We booked the family room and it was very mini- certainly couldn't have had 2 children in there. The sofa bed was supposed to fit 2, but I was worried about just the one falling down and getting tangled in the mechanics of it on either side, and it was only single sized. It was also pushed up against the only radiator in the room- luckily we stayed in spring so the radiator wasn't needed, but not ideal. The bathroom shower was covered in mould and the paint was pealing the walls pretty badly. Had to wait an unnecessarily long time for breakfast, which isn't easy with a wriggly 2 year old, and odd given we were the first ones in. The down stairs had obviously been renovated, but the roomer stayed in was in desperate need of work.
Review 115:Staff were helpful and polite, free wifi, good location close to Chatsworth. Nice looking building and the bar/restaurant was good.
Review 116:Primarily it is a pub, so do not expect anything different than pub food. All beds are standard doubles (1.40 m wide). If you do not like that, there is a problem
Review 117:Room was of good size, bathroom well equipped. Street traffic noise was less than we expected.
Review 118:Was slightly disappointed with dinner as it did not meet my expectations at all. Having said that my partners dinner was ok.
Review 119:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Cooked breakfast was brilliant.
Review 120:Room that was not fit for purpose. A relaxing break. It would have stressed a nun.
Review 121:Location and staff tried really hard to improve our stay considering the noise in the bedroom was unbearable. Staff said everyone complains in that room and the management had tried to improve it but to no avail.
Review 122:There were always plenty of staff around in the Restaurant, never quite sure what they were all doing, as if you went to the Bar for another drink you could wait ages as there only ever appeared to ever be only one member of staff serving drinks? This while the other members of staff just stood around talking/chatting or texting on their phones.
Review 123:The room was clean and tidy, but could tend to be a little noisy with the road and car park so close and an extractor exhaust right outside the window; it wasn't too bad though. The food offered in the Restaurant was of a good standard with a fair choice - the spit roast chicken was very good.
Review 124:The room décor was very poor. The bathroom had mould around the shower and window. The whole room could do with up-dating
Review 125:The breakfast was excellent and staff very friendly
Review 126:the sofa bed was a little small for the children (a 14 year old and a 9 year old) The major issue was the hot water supply as it was a single tank to supply all rooms with a 30 minute heat up time - so if you were unlucky the water was cold when having a bath or shower. There is a notice to advise of this in the bedroom, but the issue could be easily remedied with electric showers
Review 127:Location was very good, hotel was modern and well presented, staff were generally friendly and helpful, food was very good with a good menu, rooms were clean
Review 128:Room very small, noisy at night due to room being over 2 extractor fans outside, windows had black mould on them, cobwebs over top of curtains, black mould in the shower cubicle, room service not good, complaints put in a email, fob off with the fact the pub was a old building, cleanliness costs nothing,
Review 129:It was central to most towns, food reasonable, staff friendly enough,
Review 130:We arrived at 4.30pm to check in with friends booked in 2 rooms. The bar was busy with one member of staff and it took 15 minutes with some comments to get anyone to check us in. With a room rate of £110 per night this and the breakfast service was poor. service was poor
Review 131:Room comfortable, Beer & evening meal excellent
Review 132:Room over looking the kitchen area. The smells of cooking fat. Nowhere to relax at night.
Review 133:Easy access for were we wanted to be. The food was excellent especially the midweek offers.
Review 134:Thank you to the lovely staff for being so friendly and helpful. The hotel is in an excellent setting. It felt surprising secure after central London where I was relaxed enough to let my 6 yr old leave the dinner table to go to the toilet on his own. The rooms were very spacious. More than plenty space around the bed to have the little one sleep on a mattress without it feeling cramped at all. Excellent location in beautiful surroundings.
Review 135:Shower a little poor on pressure. Small room for price (but was Easter weekend).
Review 136:Really friendly and helpful staff. Comfy bed. Good food n ales. Nicely refurbished pub. Excellent breakfast.
Review 137:Communication from staff could be improved. Could do with menus for the breakfast options. Our room was above the kitchen which has a swing door underneath the room, during service morning and evening this slams regularly. Although this wasn't as bad as I initially thought it would be- it did wake us up in the morning. We did ask to change but it was fully booked. Food is ok- good rotisserie chicken. The room could do with a bit of attention, although refurbished it feels like bits have been missed.
Review 138:Good location. We wanted to go to chatsworth and it's just down the road. Room was large. Bathroom huge. Some staff were helpful. Good amount of car parking. Very clean.
Review 139:The view from the family room.
Review 140:All about it. Wish I had more time. They should have a package with all meals included. It will be more attractive. Also would like to know about hiking trails so having maps ready would be useful.
Review 141:Room was too hot for us even after turning all the heating off and opening the windows. The cot was missing it's lower base/mattress but we managed with some cushions.
Review 142:Food was very good. Staff were helpful.
