Reviews for Cuillin Hills Hotel
Review 1:Our room was very cold at night and with a 6 month old it wasn't acceptable. Went to see the night porter at night due to no heating on in the room and it being -2 outside. there was no one on at all. We couldn't even leave the hotel as the doors were locked. Spoke to the manager in the morning and was wasn't very satisfied with the level of concern she showed was basically told there was someone sleeping in the hotel and there was a very small plaque put on the desk to tell us. Basically my complaint was dismissed and felt very disappointed to be fair. First time to Skye and ruined it for us.
Review 2:Beautiful location and nice hotel, good food.
Review 3:A bit off the road , but worth the drive .
Review 4:Staff very helpful and friendly. Hotel would normally be out of our price range but they reduce their prices in the winter , would definitely visit again. Food excellent and good value .
Review 5:No wifi but was explained the reasonings why, not hotel or staffs fault, just slightly annoying.
Review 6:Got upgraded to a premier room. The room, the view, the staff, everything was amazing! Little quiet as we went out of season, but a perfect place to celebrate our anniversary, and an engagement!
Review 7:Advertised as having free wifi in all areas of the hotel. We were unable to access wifi anywhere in the hotel. While part of the problem may be due to external factors, hotel staff had access to locked wifi but this was unavailable to guests. Lacking in amenities that you might expect in a 4 star hotel, eg lift, spa etc.
Review 8:Very comfortable hotel with magnificent view from the dining room. Staff very friendly. Without requesting we were upgraded to a turret room.
Review 9:The staff were amazing. Helpful, cheerful and accommodating in every way. Made our New Years celebrations that bit more special. Thank you. Breakfast was lovely. Decent portions, lots of continental options on top of cooked meal, and tasted great. Room was clean, spacious and a comfortable bed.
Review 10:The restaurant appears to double as a large function room and lacks atmosphere.....it was also noisy due to such a large open space.
Review 11:Good location.......Excellent room which was spotless and clean
Review 12:One thing is the Wifi of this hotel can not cover all of the area, therefore we could hardly access the internet and the signal for the whole staying there.
Review 13:It's a pretty good location near the town center in Portree, and I can enjoy the view through the window of my room. Breakfast was prepared decently.
Review 14:Very very weak Wi-Fi.
Review 15:Everythink just a high class.Lovely hotel ,fabulous location, room and bed were so comfy, food in restaurant just brilliant ! Breakfast so perfect and been made by order. So was very fresh and tasty.
Review 16:Some other guests tended to stand outside our room talking quite early in the morning which woke us up both mornings.
Review 17:Very helpful staff in regards to giving advice on where to go and what to see. The food in the restaurant was beautiful and we had an amazing view from our room out onto the lake.
Review 18:It's a lovely hotel in a beautiful location. Great staff and wonderful food top off an excellent package. We will DEFINITELY stay there in the future.
Review 19:We were unaware that this hotel had a annex and we were dissapointed to find our rooms were in the annex. The room was comfortable but the bathroom was cold and could do with a radiator because the towel heater just is not enough.
Review 20:The staff were helpful, polite & attentive, we ate one evening meal in the restaurant and it was very enjoyable, and resonablely priced. We also liked the sitting room with the fire and enjoyed a few malt whiskey's
Review 21:Food was not very good plus was not very warm when served The bedroom was nice but the bed very hard not very comfortable
Review 22:The staff are very friendly and helpful
Review 23:Breakfast was not brilliant but feedback was graciously accepted and dealt with.
Review 24:Amazing venue and location. Staff extremely friendly. Beautiful decor of the rooms and spotlessly clean.
Review 25:A wee bit far from the village center, but a cab will only cost you a few dollars/pounds.
Review 26:The best accommodations in Portree. Great staff, lovely rooms, excellent restaurant.
Review 27:We had no bad experiences.
Review 28:Nothing was too much trouble. My husband and I were on our "honeymoon" as we had just re-taken our wedding vows. My daughter phoned them to tell them and they upgraded the room and provided some fizz too. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 29:Our room in particular didnt have a view, view of car park. Stay not long enough!!
Review 30:Loved the staff very attentive, very helpful, great local knowledge at reception. Beautiful views from lounge great decor, real fire.
Review 31:There is nothing not to like about this hotel.
Review 32:Overall comfort and quietness. A very good environment for our week of stay. Staff were exceedingly pleasant, chatty and helpful.
Review 33:WiFi connection was not always available and was slow when it did work.
Review 34:The restaurant was excellent. The food was of a very high standard. Staff were friendly and attentive. The location is beautiful but is a 15 minute walk from town.
Review 35:The beds were so hard we were glad we had not booked moremthan 2 nights. Stairs and public area had strong cooking smells
Review 36:Location great. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Review 37:The mattress and bedding are old amd dated. We paid for a premium room and their was a leak that made the carpet wet for our 2 day stay. The front desk staff knew about it and did nothing
Review 38:The breakfast was good Enjoyed spending time by the fire in the lounge
Review 39:great service, clean rooms with a good location off main Portree away from the bustle in the town. Good breakfast included every morning in the restaurant which had an excellent view.
Review 40:quite expensive, the room was nice, but the bathroom was a little tired, given that this hotel has a 4 star rating, the menu was repetitive and quite expensive
Review 41:The location and views from the hotel
Review 42:Stunning views from front of hotel. Quiet location just outside Portree overlooking the sea. Friendly accommodating staff who are all very keen to make your visit as relaxed and enjoyable as they can.
Review 43:Should have researched the bedrooms better very much at the back.
Review 44:The views were breathtaking although we were lucky with stunning weather. The staff were very friendly. The food was of a good standard
Review 45:The hotel prides itself on having great views yet the room I received, which was a superior double (£140), overlooked the car park. The bathroom was substandard and earthing wires for the basin etc were on show. The bed was two singles pushed together making for an awful night's sleep!
Review 46:Location and staff were good and the night bar man was particularly entertaining and jovial.
Review 47:A bit expensive for what you're getting in terms of room accommodations.
Review 48:loved the location, the staff were incredible (ask for Doug to tell you about the whisky collection), the food in the restaurant was great.
Review 49:View from bedroom of rear car park not exactly what we would have liked
Review 50:The food was faultless and the selection of drinks available from the bar was first class
Review 51:The food was not great but it was convenient to have a restaurant on site.
Review 52:While it was initially difficult to find, it turned out to be a nice walk from the center of town. The property was lovely with a nice view of the harbor.
Review 53:Quite expensive but not unreasonable for quality and location
Review 54:Stunning views across the harbour, relaxed atmosphere in hotel , great food and lovely room.
Review 55:Tv didn't work for a bit but someone came to fix it so all turned out in the end :)
Review 56:Beautiful location and outlook of the water. The restaurant was amazing with such delicious food. I would definitely recommend it to others!
Review 57:We were disappointed that our room was in an annex not connected to the main house (wet when rained), uncomfortable bed, extremely pricey for the accommodation. The front desk was unorganized.
Review 58:The location could not be beat - beautiful vistas from the restaurant. Food was good, not outstanding.
Review 59:The room was big and comfortable with a superb view over the bay - worth paying extra for. The meal we had was cooked beautifully and presented well. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a great stay.
Review 60:Bed was very hard; however, manager arranged to have duvet/mattress cover added underneath the linens. Improved comfort to satisfactory level.
Review 61:The view from the room. Paths and Walks around the local area.
Review 62:Expensive for a room without any sort of view and a pretty bad wi-if service.
Review 63:Reasonably spacious rooms. Large welcoming drawing room. 24 hour service desk - very late arrival and staff prepared some food and a drink for me. Happy to provide sightseeing options.
Review 64:Superb location and view out the front door. Our room had a peek-a-boo view with a glimpse of water. Pricey for that little bit of luxury. Spacious room though dated decor and bathroom fixtures. Dinner tasty but staff wanted to rush us into ordering and delivering first course when we asked for time to enjoy our cocktails. With sunny skies our whole time we loved the view but it came at a steep price. In rain I'd feel I over spent for the experience.
Review 65:The room is way overprices for the size and comfort. Although the food is good at the restaurant, the dish presentation lacks the refinement you would expect for such a venue
Review 66:The hotel is quiet. It has a confortable large drawing room with a fireplace. The view from the drawing room and restaurant is very nice. The staff is pleasant. The place is very clean. The whiskey bar is a plus for the variety. The descriptive of the whiskeys are helpful for choosing.
Review 67:Asked for a quiet room and was given a room at the back but at the rear car park door......NOT a quiet room early in the morning or late at night!!!
Review 68:Location Location Location!!!
Review 69:No wifi despite advertised. Said whole town out though found tourist bureau in town not far away had wifi. Obviously they were unconcerned and therefore we left early
Review 70:Wifi was not good. Mini bar ould have been good.
Review 71:Food was great. Staff were very friendly and knowldgeable. Comfortable and very clean. Great views. Surroundings were brilliant and in easy walking distance of the town centre. Douglas, manager of the restaurant and bar was fantastic, as were all the staff we met..
Review 72:WIFI was down for our entire stay. Apparently this is a common occurrence. A minor inconvenience.
Review 73:A wonderful surprise. Best place to stay in Isle of Skye. Large comfortable room, beautiful surroundings, Very good restaurant.
Review 74:No WiFi. Was advised this was a BT issue and would be resolved at a certain time only to overhear by staff a totally different version! No iron facilities in the room. Had a member of staff searching hotel for iron which took a long time. This is not good for a 4 star rate hotel with a 5 star price! Lacking a few qualities. Premier room lacking bath but facilities for disabled. the shower curtains were very short in length therefore bathroom soaked all over! If paying for drinks or food they take your bank card away to the reception for payment. This should not be happening and this should be carried out in front of guests. You have to go all the way to reception if you wish view. It's a lovely looking hotel however how they justify £260 for one evening baffles me!
Review 75:Lovely building Hard working staff
Review 76:Poor Wi-Fi signal in the room No good bread and no fresh vegetables for breakfast Window looking to the parking
Review 77:Very attentive and helpful staff Wonderful location Delicious meals at the restaurant
Review 78:Pricy for what it is. Adequate room, nothing fancy. Dinner ha excellent starters, very nice waiter. Both fish main courses overlooked.
Review 79:Spectacular location
Review 80:we liked everything about the hotel
Review 81:Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Went out of their way to make us welcome. Gorgeous setting and view. Very comfortable rooms and convenient location
Review 82:The free internet was good but worked somewhat sporadically with our cell phones
Review 83:wonderful friendly staff, large and very comfortable rooms, spectacular location and excellent food (especially the Java Cake icecream!). public rooms very spacious. Will definitely return.
Review 84:The room had poor ventilation and had a musty odor. The wifi was terrible and unsuitable for web use.
Review 85:Nice location and grounds with view of the harbour.
Review 86:Extremely expensive, but we did book during the summer peak period. Poor Wi-Fi coverage .
Review 87:Wonderful locations and views across Portree bay. Attentive and friendly staff. Large rooms with lovely bathrooms. Great selection of whiskey and decent dinner
Review 88:The hotel is expensive.
Review 89:A lovely country house hotel with views over Portree and the sea. The hotel is very smart and the front bedrooms have wonderful views. The restaurant serves a range of quality meals.
Review 90:Hard to find fault>
Review 91:The hotel is in a beautiful location overlooking the bay. it is a little distance from the main town. The room we had was in an adjoining building to the main hotel and was very quiet. Parking was more than adequate. The breakfast was excellent. The staff were friendly and their service was excellent.
Review 92:We arrived around 3pm after a very arduous journey, I asked if we could have some sandwiches as Lunch was over and unfortunately they did not serve any, although I was offered a scone. The evening meal in the restaurant was not very good, cold chewy meat and no condiments even after a request.
Review 93:Lovely hotel and room was a good size. Very Scottish feel , although it looked as if it had been recently decorated. The view from the dining room was very pretty even in the rain.
Review 94:Superb location and splendid view! Close to Portree, but just on the outside. Great food served for breakfast, and the dinner was divine (perhaps aided by the view). Rooms were comfortable and well cleaned.
Review 95:We had dinner there and some other small restaurants in Skye. Food at outside was way better than hotel.
Review 96:Great view, excellent support staff, fireplace! Would like to go back again
Review 97:Very slow internet. It took me an hour to book ferry from Armadale to Mailaig and I have to sit at the lobby. I was told it's the same all over Skye. Hot and cold water is difficult to use. Separate hot and cold taps seem to be standard in Scotland. Carpet seemed to just have been washed and was not completly dry.
Review 98:Location, excellent view of Portree.
Review 99:My room in the annexe building out the back was tired. the vinyl was worn of the arm chairs. For the price paid I expect better than that.
Review 100:Nice views, close to the city centre but quiet and private with nice views, a good breakfast and attentive staff.
Review 101:Absolutely beautiful view from our room. Loved that the room was spacious and had chairs and table in front of the big bay window looking out over the mountains and harbour. What a gorgeous setting. Staff was terrific! They even made a Happy Birthday balloon for my husband's birthday and reserved a lovely window-side table for us. Loved Doug, our waiter, and Mary! So friendly and great interest in recs for our exploring.
Review 102:if i had to find a fault it was that the promised extra serving of bread at dinner only appeared on the last night
Review 103:everything about the hotel from the friendly welcome, superb views, comfortable room and superb dining
Review 104:No one to greet us on arrival, wandered around looking for staff, some of whom ignored us until we found the checkin person. Cold rainy night but had to suggest a fire in fireplace. Asked front desk for advertised sampling of whiskey in lounge, and no one came -- had to go find the bartender. Odd disconnects.
Review 105:Good views from dining areas, cute hotel, good breakfast, room was comfortable.
Review 106:Bed was on the soft side which you may like or not but apart from that, great place and very friendly staff.
Review 107:Spectacular view over loch and towards Cuillin Hills. Great Whisky bar and experienced bartender.
Review 108:We had difficulty reaching to the hotel since GPS did not pick up and roads are narrow and winding. Their signage could be a bit more prominent. White background does not stand out.
Review 109:Fabulous restaurant...we had a great dinner!
Review 110:Overpriced for a one-night stay in a double bed (£195), but Skye being a ridiculously captive market with more than its fair share of somewhat dubious B&Bs, this was the better option.
Review 111:Staff were very friendly, from check-in to breakfast. Duty Manager was particularly friendly, and breakfast was fast and delicious. The bedroom was a decent size and the bathroom very spacious and bright and airy. The views looking over the harbour were wonderful and it felt like a cozy place to come back to after a day on the hills.
Review 112:Unable to connect to wifi in the hotel room, we had to go to the lounge to get connected. Would not expect to be unable to connect to wifi in a hotel of this standard.
Review 113:Hotel was in a good location with a Great view. The breakfast was very good and we had a very nice meal in the restaurant one evening. Staff were friendly.
Review 114:The wait staff in the dining room was not very attentive and the service was slower than it should have been.
Review 115:The location is pretty spectacular and the sitting room with the fireplace was lovely and warm and comfortable when the weather was cold and rainy.
Review 116:The bed was too small for two people. The rooms have not been refurbished for quite a while. Overall the impression was that the hotel was overpriced for the level of accommodation it offered.
Review 117:The food was good. Quick WiFi. The views and location are spectacular.
Review 118:Poor staff knowledge and attention to customers. Buffet breakfast was very poor, although the cooked food was much better. View restaurant was poor.
Review 119:location was excellent with good walks nearby. Good access to Portree. Nice hotel.
Review 120:Nothing negative.
Review 121:I stayed here for three nights as a base for climbing in the Cuillin. The staff were friendly, the room was nice, the food was delicious and the view was outstanding!
Review 122:The serving staff in the dining area concentrated on keeping the tables/dining area tidy/clean rather than attending to customers. I sat there and watched two tables be cleared and I hadn't even been asked if I wanted a tea/coffee. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at what hotels in Skye believe is a luxury standard and good service.....
Review 123:Most of the Reception staff went out of their way to make it a great stay-but serving/table staff in the dining area really need to be more friendly and better organised. The older, white haired lady serving in the dining room is clearly an incompetent "leader" of her otherwise very pleasant and accommodating staff as well as frosty.
Review 124:Nothing that we can think off.
Review 125:Fabulous view. friendly staff, especially in the dining room. We had a sitting room, bottled water, frsh fruit & cookies. After a day of driving it was delightful to spend time at this property. We had no idea what property was like other than the booking.com description and reviews. Would recommend to others and would stay here again. We have been traveling all over Scotland and every place we've stayed had good things to say about the hotel. Also, the grounds were very nice and would loved to have sat in the chairs overlooking the loch as the sun was out when we arrived but the next day rain put a damper on that idea!
Review 126:As I said above the only thing was the bed was a bit too hard and I woke with a sore back but it didn't effect what a lovely time we had.
Review 127:Friendly helpful staff, stunning views, immaculate rooms, great management with attention to detail and that personal touch that makes all the difference, Michelin star standard of food the only let down was the bed was a bit hard otherwise I would of scored it 10 out of 10, will definitely be back
Review 128:One suggestion - when you have such a spectacular view and lawn furniture - it could be used more if it was cleaned. The birds while nice, did a number on most of the chairs and tables. Also for those that haven't hired a car - it's a hilly walk to and from town if you don't want to eat on the property. Note that are also two buildings - the main and the annex. If you have a preference, call ahead.
Review 129:Nice views from the property and the restaurant. The bar looked very well stocked! Also a nice sitting area with a fireplace.
Review 130:The dinners were acceptable but not exceptional.
Review 131:The premier room was fine. The view from the hotel is possibly unsurpassed in Scotland. The staff are very helpful, chatty and cheerful.
Review 132:Mediocre service in the restaurant, lumpy porridge at breakfast and better meals can be had at some restaurants in Portree. Not good value.
Review 133:Great views of the Cuillin Hills.
Review 134:A bit overpriced. No lift, which might be a problem for some.
Review 135:Comfortable hotel, with great view over Portree. Nice, big room. Restaurant (The View) provided good food!
Review 136:The bathrooms could do with updating, quite small considering it was an upgrade to a Premier Room. Felt price didnt live up to expecations on facilities in comparison with local market.
Review 137:Staff were excellent, very personal and helpful. Made to feel welcome throughout entire stay. Location was great, looked right out onto Portree Bay.
Review 138:The rooms and hotel are older, so the infrastructure was outdated; wifi was poor but they did change my room to accommodate being close to a good signal.
Review 139:The location was quiet and had a beautiful view of the bay
Review 140:booked for 4 nights in £175 per night sea view room. got £120 refurbished room in what looked like old staff quarters. cars were parked right out side the windows. dirty net curtains at the windows. large bathroom window had the top half clear glass. the back of the main hotel windows looked straight in. Surely this is not allowed. When we complained and asked for another room, we were told it was full, when told we hadn't booked this room we were told it was Booking.com's fault. but our documentation showed we were going to pay £175 a night. we think they deliberately over booked the good rooms, hoping you wouldn't complain when they gave you a standard room. left after one night. staff surly, as if they knew what they had done, and were embarrassed. We had stayed before and enjoyed it. hence the return visit. choice of food limited this time. They had a didn't care attitude.
Review 141:breakfast, and leaving after one night to return to our previous hotel. Nevis Bank Inn. who where lovely!
The Fine Print
The hotel has one room that is suitable for disabled persons. Most of the rooms have space for an extra bed.All Standard Rooms look on to the parking lot. Rooms with sea views are available for an additional charge.
