Reviews for The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa
Review 1:The only fault I can find with this hotel was a fault of my own - I didn't stay long enough! We could only stay for one night as we had other commitments on Sunday, would have to come for a long weekend next time.
Review 2:The hotel was very "oldy worldy" but was amazing. The staff were extremely helpful, even with directions to get there. The evening meal was beautifully presented and delicious. Would definitely recommend. Lovely long walks on the doorstep too!!
Review 3:I thought the prices for the restaurant, breakfast & bar were a little steep.
Review 4:Booked a courtyard room but arrived to find I'd been upgraded to one with a mountain & garden view which was really lovely. Had a massage in the spa which was excellent, very friendly and helpful staff.
Review 5:Just to say that the food wasnt kept warm enough with the use of the serving facilities maybe thats something to look at , which was a shame
Review 6:Staff were very helpful to make sure we enjoyed our stay facilities were enjoyable
Review 7:House keeping not good. Bed was barely made. Room not cleaned well. Coffee cup dirty. Room requires updating. Bathroom has been modernised but room lets it down. Communal areas in hotel also require updating. Tired. Old fashioned. Very expensive for what it is. Bistro meals just ok - nothing to write home about!
Review 8:Amazing location in centre of Grasmere. Comfortable bed.
Review 9:The hotel was comfortable, with the rooms and facilities clean, tidy and including all of the nice touches. The staff were excellent, friendly and efficient, with nothing too much trouble. The location was ideal, this was our first visit but won't be our last.
Review 10:Nothing
Review 11:Brilliant short stay. Staff friendly and professional. Hotel in perfect setting charming and comfy. Room 23 was basic but rest of hotel and facilities made up for it. Excellent breakfast. We will return.
Review 12:The public areas are extremely tired not sur hotel deserves four star rating.
Review 13:Comfortable room, good location. Staff in restaurant and bar were lovely and the food was delicious.
Review 14:An outstanding hotel in a beautiful location. The staff were very friendly and attentive, particularly in the restaurant and the food far exceeded all expectations. Overall we had a fabulous stay.
Review 15:The Bacon and sausage were dry and the Smoked Haddock slightly overcooked.
Review 16:The swimming pool and the small complimentary bottle of wine in our room to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The room was lovely.
Review 17:For breakfast, it would have costed £17.50 per person. We found this exhorbitant and searched for a cafe in town. A pity because for a more reasonable sum we would have preferred to breakfast at the hotel.
Review 18:Friendly helpful staff
Review 19:It was a very poor establishment, wasn't worth that amount of money at all, very poor reception for wifi and I don't think it should be classified as a four star hotel
Review 20:The location and that's it.
Review 21:Our room, 18, was over a noisy generator, which keep us awake during the night and the kitchen, which woke us early in the morning, with the staff shouting. The room had many dirty marks on the walls, dead flies squished on the roller blind and dirty grout inbetween the floor tiles in the bathroom. The staff were forced polite at best. Kept their heads down in the corridor, to avoid eye contact. There were signs everywhere, saying quiet please, meeting in progress, which didn't make for a warm welcome for a couple on holiday. Reminded me of guest houses in the 80s. Definitely not 4 stars. After explaining our disappointment at the room, the manager said they were aware of the issues and suggested we contacted her later in the year or early next year to go again, when they've redecorated, to get a discount. On reflection I wouldn't be happy giving this hotel any more of our money, after they admitted they were aware of the state of our room and still were insisting the full price of our booking. Again very disappointing, certainly not up to any standard, let alone 4 star.
Review 22:The location is great, central in the village.
Review 23:We asked for upstairs room but were put in a pokey room on ground floor. We did have a view of the garden and mountain but had to open nets and therefore had no privacy. Bed comfy and bathroom well equiped.
Review 24:Location
Review 25:Would have been perfect only there was a corporate party in when we went into the bar or conservatory we where asked go in the residence lounge this was cold and we felt a little isolated as we where there for 3 days it put a bit of a damper on our stay we we where looking forward to eating in main dinning room but had to eat breacfast and dinner in a back room like a child that was put on the naughty step other guests where quite put out also we didnt complain as this would have realy spoiled our stay.
Review 26:Location and spa
Review 27:Staff fairly friendly, but service was often slow (particularly at breakfast). Things didn't quite flow.
Review 28:Choice of comfortable spaces/lounges to sit. Whole place had comfortable, country charm. Beautiful grounds.
Review 29:Restaurant - untrained staff, pretentious menu trying and failing to be nouvelle cuisine and expensive. Room - overlooking non-existant courtyard and very hot and stuffy. Impossible to cool it.
Review 30:Good location, pleasant reception staff, nice garden. Could be a good hotel if it was managed properly and the restaurant staff were trained
Review 31:Very pleasant welcoming staff on arrival to hotel. We were given a free upgrade of our room which was delightful. . Certainly worthy of another visit in the near future. Very pleasant dining room staff. Overall for us a very nice over night stay.
Review 32:Minor difficulty finding a parking space on arrival. No warning that a coin was needed to operate lockers in changing room in spa
Review 33:Great location. Good leisure facilities. Friendly staff
Review 34:The room needs updating apart from that it was good
Review 35:Location and external style of the property are superb. Only downfall was that the room was dated but I believe they are renovating so would be a higher score if the room was updated. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the hotel and room were clean. I would stay again
Review 36:very poor r oom, too hot, dismal view of fire escape and other walls therefore room very dull. Unable to change room as hotel was fully booked.
Review 37:Excellent location
Review 38:Hotel could do with a revamp. Staff at breakfast time were pleasent but not very quick at doing the basics like clearing plates away and asking if you would like more coffee. Found we had to keep asking.
Review 39:Location, Spa, Room, Breakfast was good.
Review 40:Dinner menu very ott. Better food at more sensible prices to be had within the village of Grasmere
Review 41:Plenty of parking space. Good location. Good leisure facilities
Review 42:Small & plain room, bed was very uncomfortable, not value for money. Had a bad experience, been in touch with manager who was nice and helpful. I wouldn't suggest my review would put anyone off staying as It was a lovely hotel but ensure you are aware of type of room & if you are not satisfied if anything please speak to the manager before you leave if possible.
Review 43:Location.
Review 44:Our room unfortunately was ridiculously hot! Even with the air conditioning, radiators off, fan on and window open in the room. It was a lovely room and had beautiful views of the hotel gardens and fells but just spoilt by the unbearable heat in the room.
Review 45:The location was fantastic and the hotel was lovely. My partner and I enjoyed a dip in the pool, jacuzzi and use of the sauna after a long walk during the day. Food was excellent, especially the breakfast. Also, the staff made us feel welcome and even gave us a small bottle of wine in the room to celebrate our birthdays. Would definitely stay here again.
Review 46:The room was nice, spa was poor, the service at breakfast was terrible we waited 45 minutes for a cooked breakfast and eggs benedict I had to ask 3 times for coffee to be brought to the table.
Review 47:This was a very poor value hotel with very poor service overall. In fact it was a complete rip off. The food was good. The hotel itself is very tired looking and needs updating. We asked for some refund because we didn't get the rooms we booked for we only got a measly refund back. I will be complaining directly to the hotel about this
Review 48:the hotel had good wifi
Review 49:We had a number of safety issues, fire doors on the stairs were constantly wedged open we were scalded in the spa Jacuzzi the shower tray was slippy like a sheet of ice and someone tried to get into our room at 3,00 am. The bed mattress was at least 15 years old there was no padding on top of the springs - very uncomfortable, and we were given a different room from the one we ordered we ended up in the attic very noisy when it rained.
Review 50:The breakfast was good, the selection of breakfast on offer was very good and the quality was good
Review 51:The room we stayed in was stifflingly hot, although there was a fan we could use, but it didn't make to much difference in cooling it down, we even slept with the window open but it didn't make much difference..
Review 52:The staff were very very good, very pleasant and nothing was to much. Loved the thick white soft towels and the refreshing showers. Food very good, enjoyed it all, loved the soft music playing in the dining room, nice touch. and loved the pool and gardens, very relaxing. Loved the pool and the gardens, very relaxing.
Review 53:Room directly over the kitchen, so experienced some cooking smells. Uncomfortable bed - I like a bed to be firm but this was just too hard. Very flat pillows.
Review 54:Friendly, polite staff.
Review 55:Everywhere felt a little dated and tired-looking. The room was incredibly warm, despite the fan (and a huge industrial air conditioning unit) in the room. The mattress was too soft...felt like sleeping in a giant marshmallow! The waiter that took our breakfast order could do with learning some hospitality tips. This hotel has the potential to be a superb hotel as it is located in such a beautiful part of The Lake District, but it needs to pay more attention to the little details (eg: Make the entrance porch more inviting and tidier, remove the 'duck tape' holding window frames together, replace the faded, water-stained picture on the stairs, fix the broken parts of the roof etc. etc.). I don't wish to go on, but it was a little disappointing after what we had seen on the website before. We felt like we were staying at 'Fawlty Towers' as soon as we walked through the door.
Review 56:Nice view of hills from window over the roof tops. The room was clean and we were taken to our room by a pleasant receptionist. Nice and quiet during our stay at The Wordsworth. Perfect location and large car park which was great. Nice lounge area with sofas and piano. Bar staff in evening very helpful...it was no trouble to get a jug of iced water to take up to our room. Had a lovely swim in the pool (remember to take £1 coin with you...no one at the reception mentioned it, as you need it for the locker). Ended up dining in another place for dinner as there was only a very late slot for dinner at this hotel.
Review 57:For the standard the hotel is aspiring to I have had better breakfasts - full Cumbrian - they forgot the black pudding and no hash browns as standard. The soft poached eggs weren't but came back fine the second time. The breakfast buffet had no grapefruit or muesli. The unadventurous dinner was well cooked but no potatoes at all served with the main course.
Review 58:The view alone from the Ruskin Suite is worth every penny - the luxurious accommodation an added bonus! Staff are very attentive
Review 59:The food in the bistro was average, they didn't have some of the menu items. Breakfast was average, disappointing food on the whole.
Review 60:The staff on reception were very helpful.
Review 61:Initially we were booked into a room which overlooked the suite which was being used for a wedding reception, not their fault but it was noisy, they did allow us to move to an alternate room for that night.
Review 62:Eating at the Signature Restaurant, the food was fantastic.
Review 63:The bed needed a new mattress, you could feel every spring, very uncomfortable! some rooms needed updated (looked a little cheap and tatty)
Review 64:The spa was nice, the swimming pool was heated which was lovely. Also the hotel is in a great location with a gorgeous grounds to admire the view.
Review 65:The wallpaper in the room looked like it needed a clean or updated. The travel cot looked a bit dirty so couldn't put my little boy to sleep in it.
Review 66:The pool was really nice, we were the only ones in there. It was a nice area and not too far from the lakes.
Review 67:the staff were great but at times could have helped a bit more, go beyond whats expected.
Review 68:The Spa facilities were great. The room we stayed in, the junior suit was fantastic, loved the bed, had a great sleep! would book again. Some areas need updating. a few cracks appearing.
Review 69:Sash window in room was broken and therefore couldn't open window on the hottest day of the year. Reported it and maintenance man was supposed to come and have a look but he didn't show during our stay.
Review 70:beautiful location, gorgeous gardens and fabulous breakfast.
Review 71:Carpet in room was wet when we arrived something had been spilt we reported it to reception who sent someone up immediately but the carpet was still wet and sticky after two days the room started to smell the carpet needed washing
Review 72:The staff were excellent very helpful and friendly. Food was excellent some of the best food if ever eaten top marks to the chef
Review 73:Room No 3, although large, is depressing and airless. The window could only be opened about 5/6 inches a d has a blind permanently down because of the outlook on to other windows and a fire escape. We were given an electric fan (which blew out clouds of dust when first switched on) which was too noisy to live on during the night.
Review 74:Lovely location, lounge and bar areas and friendlt staff
Review 75:Wifi isn't the best. Think our bed is a wee bit old, it felt like it was slipping slightly, but was comfortable never the less.
Review 76:We really enjoyed staying at this hotel! Dog friendly rooms have access straight onto lawn so you can take your pet straight outside. You can take your dog into the lounge areas. Rooms are decorated beautifully. Breakfast is fabulous - lots of choice and cooked fresh. Location great.
Review 77:Room 18 is a stuffy one: we didn't sleep very well, though the fan helped. We were taken aback by the 'fine dining' costs of the food both in the hotel, the neighbouring 'Dove and Olive Branch Bistro' and Grasmere generally. We should have done our research better, but if fine dining is what you are after, this is the place for you.
Review 78:Very friendly staff and nice bar and residents' lounge.
Review 79:Disappointed to find later, as part of deal (gift from daughter and son) that a bottle of prosecco should have been in mini bar which only contained 2 bottles of water.
Review 80:Nice room, superb food, very pleasant and attentive staff at every stage.
Review 81:I booked this hotel and a two and half hour spa treatments as a surprise for my wife birthday which was cancelled by the manager a hour and a half before the treatment was due to start and the sauna was not work
Review 82:The room ,breakfast ,and the location
Review 83:I thought the cooked breakfast this occasion was no better than average to poor. Bacon was obviously cooked a long time previous and kept under heat. The fried Egg was hard boiled nearly. Mushrooms mostly water and tomatoes no taste...........coffee was good.
Review 84:Having an upgrade was excellent . Staff excellent.
Review 85:One particular member of staffs with attitude Ann Whitacombe type....on Reception early Saturday morning.....
Review 86:Location of hotel....position of our room.
Review 87:I did not like the evening meal having to be all four courses. I would have liked to eat in but four courses is too much for me to eat.
Review 88:I liked most things about the hotel.
Review 89:very small room and double bed. Clean enough but getting to the worn looking stage. Eg windows had to have a shampoo bottle stuck under to keep it open
Review 90:friendly staff good breakfast
Review 91:Not able to get a reservation for dinner on night we arrived. Bit of a dragon on reception, left a queue to show us to our room. Bed and pillows not comfortable. When we did get a reservation for dinner on our 3rd night, the had us booked into the bistro not the restaurant that we had requested. Worst coffee of our whole trip to the lakes.
Review 92:Good location in village.
Review 93:Mattress on bed was lumpy could feel the springs.needed a new one
Review 94:Spar and pool was excellent. Staff were very helpful and friendly.food was very good .
Review 95:Courtyard needs tidying up and potted plants added. Area by car park exit road would benefit from a tidy up.
Review 96:Comfort and welcoming atmosphere. Location in the centre of Grasmere.
Review 97:Room was too small to fit the two of us, plus luggage, plus dog. Woke with pretty bad back pain due to softness of mattress. Food prices for restaurant over-priced, & charging for bar snacks (a tiny bowl of nuts) seems a little excessive.
Review 98:We were last here in Spring 2014 to celebrate our wedding & was so lovely to be back. Staff always friendly & accommodating, rooms beautifully kept with a boutique feel. A very homely atmosphere.
Review 99:Nothing!
Review 100:It was our wedding anniversary, and the staff welcomed us with Prosecco in our beautifull room! Breakfast was lovely and the customer service is excellent!
Review 101:Room 20 was far too hot, could hear lift & plumbing system. Took an hour to get checked in. staff not very helpful.
Review 102:The location of hotel is in a fab spot.
Review 103:The room we had is advertised as a courtyard room, we understood this was not overlooking the gardens or hills but it was an airless small area with a fire escape. I would not stay in this type of room again
Review 104:The location is lovely and the public rooms were very comfortable.
Review 105:The staff always went out of their way to meet your requirements and very friendly at all times. The Breakfast Menu is the best I have seen with so many choices.
Review 106:The jacuzzi wouldn't turn on and when we rang to ask they didn't inform us that there was a main fuse that had to be switched on somewhere in the bathroom only said it must not be working.
Review 107:The room was lovely, the staff were very friendly and the food was great too.
Review 108:It was lovely to be so looked after by all the staff. It was a quiet but friendly atmosphere were the rest bite we required could be sort. Would recommend and we hope to return for another stay. The food in the two restaurants was fantastic.
Review 109:Nothing to dislike.A really friendly hotel with first class and dining to die for'
Review 110:Everything from arriving to leaving could not have been better looked after.Room brilliant food the same and the staff some of the best we have had.
Review 111:Bistro menu very limited and our choice of vegetarian option not available. Asked for snacks - crisps/nuts at bar in evening but told not available despite seeing them sold mid afternoon!
Review 112:Relaxed atmosphere particularly around open fire in reception. Good bar area and comfortable conservatory.
Review 113:Could have had free robes in the bedrooms. Had to pay an addional cost of £5 each
Review 114:The srevice and the staff was excellent nothing was to much trouble. Will certainly visit again. A perfect weekend
Review 115:First room (22) was far too warm to be comfortable. Couldn't sleep as too hot, think it was above the sauna. Asked to be moved and staff were very helpful and moved us across the landing to 22 which was much better, although over the kitchen which was really noisy from 6am.
Review 116:great location with very helpful staff
Review 117:Booking hadn't been completed correctly and so we weren't booked in upon arrival however the hotel were very helpful and soon resolved this.
Review 118:An excellent stay, lovely friendly staff and excellent food. The breakfasts are fantastic - do not book room only! Everyone should try the breakfast!!
Review 119:Better lighting and ambience in the restaurant albeit very nice. It was valentines when we dined and there was a great harpist. Candles and better lighting I feel would be so nice. Lovely open fire in entrance and it would be very nice to have a few more throughout instead of the electric fires.
Review 120:The executive luxury room and double aspect windows overlooking the garden. Lovely pool albeit on the small side and spa. Restaurant excellent and bistro at the side. Very comfortable lounges, bar and conservatory.
Review 121:I didn't have a bad experience but on two occasions the food was not served hot, which was a shame as it prevented our stay from being first class.
Review 122:Everything we liked has been answered. The staff were exceptional and the location was perfect.
Review 123:Lots of lovely choice at breakfast however the cooked breakfast a bit dry - bacon hard and warmed up -
Review 124:We stay here a lot - fabulously comfortable , scenic , lovely grounds
Review 125:Slightly tired pool and spa Room was too hot
Review 126:Central in walking distance of all local attractions and walks Friendly staff Parking Lovely large bed and cotton sheets, very comfortable Very good breakfast
Review 127:Friendly staff - excellent spa facilities especially Jessica who does an excellent facial. A must try is James cocktails his enthusiasm and knowledge excels
Review 128:We asked about food in the afternoon , one staff member was quite rude , another staff member then came and explained that as the wedding was on and they were busy, they could not serve food.
Review 129:Reception staff were helpful and courteous.
Review 130:The long walk from reception to our room When we arrived staff continued talking without acknowledging our presence for some time
Review 131:Loved the evening meal in restaurant next door Nice clean accommodation and comfortable bed
Review 132:Some tired furniture. Crowded dining room reminiscent of package hotel. On one evening, organisation of dinner schedule was chaotic. Very surprised at AA 2-rosette restaurant award. Suggest AA pay another visit.
Review 133:Bedroom & en suite very comfortable. A couple of beautiful public rooms.
Review 134:Failure of maintenance to rectify heat output from radiator hence cooked at night. Completely chaotic service in breakfast room due to useless maitre d.
Review 135:Reception good, room servicing was good, food at dinner good but overpriced, wine list very comprehensive, dining room staffing good, lift availability very good. All in all a good stay but spoilt by - see next column.
Review 136:We were encouraged to book for evening meal in the hotel, on the grounds that it would be a very special experience - but then we were only offered one specific time when we could eat. If I stay in a 4 star hotel, I expect to be able to have dinner when I want. Actually the meal was OK but the experience was not that special. Food was of good quality but the service a bit haphazard. On our second and third nights in Grasmere, we ate at the Grasmere Hotel and the Jumble Room respectively. The Grasmere Hotel was substantially cheaper with higher quality of food and much better ambience - and we got to choose the time we wanted to eat. The Jumble Room was about the same price, better ambience and more imaginative menu. So my best advice is do not choose the half board option. I chose the Wordsworth because it was advertised as having"the only swimmable pool in Grasmere". This may be true but my swimming experience was spoiled by the screaming child who ignored the displayed rules about not running and diving. The management needs to appoint a person who actually supervises the pool area. The jaccuzi had no water in it for the duration of my stay. At breakfast, the time between finishing my cereal and the arrival of my cooked breakfast was 45 minutes and 50 minutes on the first and second days respectively. On the third day, we got up early and it was OK. Really, this is supposedly a 4 star hotel and the management of the restaurant ought to be better.
Review 137:Great location in the centre of the village. Good grounds and parking.
Review 138:Hotel looked tired and old fashioned Bedroom had overly powerful smell of polish
Review 139:location was excellent right in centre Grasmere and facing gingerbread shop! The pool although relatively small was warm and we had it to ourselves also bed very comfortable and nice tea/coffee facilities
Review 140:It was a pity that the jacuzzi was out of order during our stay. The floor around the pool and changing rooms are very slippy - so be careful.
Review 141:Location is great. Room very comfortable and clean. The fire was lovely. The evening meal was enhanced by good canapés in the bar, and also a surprise starter.
Review 142:Pool was closed for the day which we specifically booked for. Room very small no 36, I had gammon in bistro, tough as old boots, at 12.95 expected much better. At 138 pound a night I found it a let down.
Review 143:Location excellent, staff polite and efficient, breakfast food and sevice very good .
