Reviews for Willersley Castle Hotel
Review 1:We had to leave our dog in the car - we knew this in advance and accepted it, but it would have been lovely if our well behaved dog could have been with us and had a warm night. The carpet could do with seeing a clean - not bad, but probably just coffee drips from happy residents!
Review 2:Wonderful room, view, breakfast and staff. All we could ask for. The breakfast is unbeatable.
Review 3:Very tired inside only about 6 tv channels breakfast at 8 am not good if your used to 7 am hotel breakfasts and need to get away for your first meeting,
Review 4:Lovely outside
Review 5:Room a little dated but this added to the character of staying in the mail building. This is a minor point.
Review 6:Informed and polite staff in all areas. Clean and well heated swimming pool. Nice spacious lounges. Able to find a quiet area at all times. Breakfast well cooked excellent quality and well presented.
Review 7:Great location, friendly staff. Room was comfortable with great views. Breakfast was good with large selection and all help yourself so great if you have a large appetite :)
Review 8:Not really bad but breakfast items were not all available. The staff were doing their best. Maybe just a little more organisation needed. Didn't spoil our stay though and will be returning
Review 9:Fabulous location, stunning views. easy walking distance to Cromford or Matlock Bath. The Staff were very polite and helpful
Review 10:The shower in our room was not very good. and at 9.45pm we tried to get another coffee and brandy in the lounge and were told that the staff were all finished. No more drinks were available. It would be a good idea to be able to get drinks and coffee downstairs until at least 10.30pm
Review 11:It was a very friendly place,
Review 12:Bit too warm in the rooms...wasn't aware the venue is a christian retreat....other guests sharing their views and beliefs quite loudly at the dinner table made the food difficult to swallow. Also very noisy after midnight with loud voices and shouting outside the hotel and in the corridors.
Review 13:Peace and quiet in the evening.
Review 14:Beautiful location in a very interesting area of the country. Room was spacious and well-equipped, if a little worn. Very friendly staff, super pool, great breakfast.
Review 15:The fact that this casle is a christian guild hotel which we was not aware of when we booked. No bar, communal meals. The room was awful
Review 16:Looking from outside the castle looked stunning
Review 17:The first week I stayed it was good. Last week my room was cold so I asked for the heating to be turned up but it didn't seem to get any hotter. Sat watching tv wrapped in a blanket! I hope this week it will be warmer. Bedside lamp bulb blew and I asked for a replacement but it never arrived, not to worry as I just used one bedside lamp. Breakfast is served from 8am until 9am - no good for me as I start work at 8am and taking travelling into account couldn't be there for breakfast - had to buy food to eat in my room. Would be nice if breakfast started earlier as the reviews I have read all say the food is good
Review 18:Lovely location
Review 19:Poor attention to housekeeping and clenliness and the waiting staff have no sense of priorities, would rather lay up tables than serve customers with the basics to go with breakfast. Lets just say I won't be back,
Review 20:Stain on carpet. Spots of blood on throw. Light didn't work outside our door. Kettle was broken the replacent was very old. Restaurant closed at 7.30pm. Not a proper bar. We could notlock our room door and we wete not offered any help. Just told It wasnt faulty and to turn the inside lock a quarter turn on the inside before locking from the outside. That did not work. Front of house staff not very friendly. We stated in our booking we had a baby and said we would need a travel cot but when we arrived they were not expecting a baby. Would only go back if the price of the room reflected our stay.
Review 21:The breakfast, shallow pool so that 13 month old could stand in it, great for him. Large pool was a good temperature. Waitress staff were friendly.
Review 22:Shaver light didn't work.
Review 23:Good value for a one night stay including breakfast. Room was in a separate block so a bit of a problem as there was heavy rain at the time. Room was newly decorated and plenty of tea/coffee.
Review 24:Bathroom was very dirty I even found pubic hair on the shower area. Shower curtain was also dirty. Doors dirty with hand marks, dusty everywhere. Very disappointed. Would not recommend at all.
Review 25:The building from outside is impressive and the views amazing. Inside it is dated and not welcoming.
Review 26:Tired rooms, cold feeling, no restaurants or bar..Cromford doesn't offer a lot either..
Review 27:Looked great, unfortunately not that great..nice pool, old small hotel and not many people under 65yrs old present. Tried to check in 10 mins before 3pm was told to take a seat until 3pm..not a great first impression.,
Review 28:Didn't realise christian till I got there. Only 2 plugs in the room. While eating lounge meal both evenings had to listen to receptionist and her barking cough!
Review 29:Beautiful location, friendly staff, as single person felt very safe.
Review 30:Rooms very basically furnished though adequate . Far too warm inside-needing windows open all the time.
Review 31:Great location and scenery . Lovely walks and towns nearby. Fantastic breakfast and staff.
Review 32:I arrived at 5.30pm in winter. There is no restaurant although meals are served communally at set times apparently. There is a coffee shop which closes at 5pm, so went hungry. No key drop for early leavers. I had to hunt around for a letterbox (in the dark) to leave keys securely. I deliberately chose a room which specified it did have wifi - it didn't have wifi. Children were yelling at banging doors until about 10pm. Appeared to be without parental supervision.
Review 33:The reception staff were friendly The room was clean and adequately equipped.
Review 34:The room was a bit aged. Perfectly functional but needed an update. But for the price we paid via booking.com it was excellent value.
Review 35:Hotel location had excellent views
Review 36:It is a Christian guide hotel which it doesn't state on here. We were very uncomfortable and there was a Methodist mission on at the time
Review 37:the view is amazing
Review 38:My room had a bedside lamp but nowhere to plug it in other than trailing an extension lead across the floor so made do with overhead light.
Review 39:Beautiful setting and enjoyed the use of the pool
Review 40:Often long waits at breakfast while they ran out of one or more items (or plates). Wifi promised but not available in either of our rooms (one was in the main building, the other in the annex). Décor is quite shabby in the rooms
Review 41:Great location and views
Review 42:the rooms were a little too warm.
Review 43:the old world charm.helpfull friendly staff, good location a few pubs and fish and chips in cromford, great walk the next day to black rocks, and of course the history of the place.
Review 44:None
Review 45:The accommodation and surroundings are stunning. The staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for you (especially the waiting staff at breakfast). Some decorating to the corridors underway but there was no noisy workers or mess. We would definitely go again
Review 46:This is more of an impression but the clientele tend to be on the right wing of UK political values. Fortunately, for my independent useage contact with the reactionaries is limited
Review 47:I have stayed here many times and cannot really fault the hotel, the location or the staff
Review 48:Would have preferred to be in the main house and not the mews
Review 49:Location was good with all attractions in easy reach. Room, although small, was clean, comfortable and warm. Good breakfasts
Review 50:The single room in the Mews was rather cramped, hence the slightly lower rating for comfort.
Review 51:I love the location on the hill and the indoor swimming pool.
Review 52:Dated decor and furnishings. For a leisure trip breakfast finishing at 9 was very disappointing. Bedroom was very noisy with banging doors in corridor. Had a family room when should've been a double and had an adapted bathroom, not suitable for a mid 40s couple.
Review 53:The location was amazing.
Review 54:There was a green "security" light in the room that could not be turned off. This meant that the light kept us awake, off and on, throughout the night. Also, it was not made clear that this was a Christian Guild run hotel, which some visitors may not appreciate. Visitors should also be made aware that wifi is not available in the Mews section of the hotel.
Review 55:Lovely area. Historically interesting. Good breakfast. Friendly staff. Clean room.
Review 56:The check-out time is a tiny bit early if you have a late-ish reakfast
Review 57:The usual high standards of service and quality of accommodation makes the experience of visiting Willersley one of life's real, affordable pleasures
Review 58:Booked a double room, given twin room, when we went to reception to make them aware they explained there where no double rooms left, despite booking weeks in advance. would have appreciated a courtesy call to make us aware before arriving so we could choose somewhere else for anniversary weekend.
Review 59:Location, exterior of building
Review 60:We only paid £49 for a room with breakfast and were expecting shared facilities. These are very dated and do need refurbishing and do reflect the price.
Review 61:Wonderful staff, who remembered our previous conversations, were very polite, friendly and helpful. Great food and lots of it. Lovely parkland and grounds.
Review 62:They could stress more in their information that it is a Christian retreat.
Review 63:The swimming pool is beautiful, the photos on the web site do not do it justice
Review 64:it wasn't advertised as a Christian guild hotel - not that we really minded but some might. disappointed didn't have a bar!!
Review 65:staff were all very friendly :)
Review 66:the setting is beautiful and you could just drink in the beauty around you continually. the premises were well kept and added to the ambiance. the property had some nice walks to go on and close to all attractions a walks.
Review 67:the castle itself is wonderful, the grounds are beautiful and peaceful, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was everything you could want.
Review 68:the room we were allocated as my partner was on crutches and staff felt the walk up the hill to The mews was uncomfortable for her. staff were most kind and convivial. excellent views of countryside
Review 69:Television aerial kept popping out, and mealtimes were like old school dinners, placings, not like any hotel I have ever been in
Review 70:The castle and location
Review 71:Not enough selection for food for the evening meal, also it would have been nicer to have a bar.
Review 72:The view from our room was superb, the staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was great and so much of it, was brilliant.
Review 73:Mews room 5 had broken radiator knob, soap dish hanging off wall and strip light not working. Shabby without the chic, but at the price (£40 B&B) I can't really complain and I'd stay again
Review 74:Superb location, comfortable bed, friendly helpful staff & excellent value for money.
Review 75:Where do i start. Couldnt park as ramblers parked on grass blocking other cars in. Bed had springs sticking out. Room hasnt had a lick of paint since 1985! No varnish on the headboards. We shared a bathroom but this wasnt a bathroom it was a bath in a cupboard that was filthy wasnt anyone next door so they couldnt blame the other party! Grim grim grim. Waited for cooked breakfast for half hour as didnt restock hot food. We wont be staying here again.
Review 76:Location thats all!!
Review 77:Comfort in bedroom was not great and the bathroom was very bare, basic and rather hospital-like :-( ... The dinner was poor - I ordered the Lasagne, which had sold out, so ended up having very dry fish and chips. My husband's salad was tiny but tasty enough. I think the restaurant meal might be better than the bar meals, at least I hope so.
Review 78:We enjoyed walking round the place and exploring it. The Spanish waiter was particularly helpful and tried his best to please, thank you!! Everybody was nice.
Review 79:The rooms was incredible hot, and no way to cool them down, the breakfast was terrible and the beds were rock solid not comfy at all.
Review 80:The view and the surrounding area was beautiful
Review 81:Little disappointed to be in the Mews. I had booked the hotel expecting to be in the main part as this was my husband and my anniversary overnight stay somewhere special. The photos on the website were a little deceiving, but taking everything into account the room was good and we were happy with our stay overall and would book to stay at Willersley Castle Hotel again.
Review 82:The staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was excellent.
Review 83:Room was not up to the usual standard we have experienced elesewhere for the price per night A lack of wow factor internally
Review 84:Location and setting excellent Grounds delightful The wow factor externally
Review 85:The room could have been cleaner. Was in the Mews. The Breakfast room was a bit chaotic. Tables had not been cleared quickly enough for next guests to use. Had to wait for cutlery whilst breakfast was getting cold.
Review 86:This was in an excellent location, with good facilities and helpful staff. The room was comfortable and there was ample parking on site.
Review 87:We went for our 1st wedding anniversary, but no special attention was given to us! For the evening meal we was sat with a group of strangers despite requesting a table for two on a couple of occasions, one by phone and one when we arrived and it ruined our evening. The hotel is bland and tired.
Review 88:The location and privacy of the room.
Review 89:The bedroom floor was obviously 'unclean' had not been vacuumed, large amounts of human hair? and nail clippings on several areas of the bedroom carpet. Carpet was very badly stained in several areas and very strong sweet smell? hung throughout the b/room and bathroom - felt it was some sort of 'spray' masking what? Generally the place had an 'uncared for / very poorly maintained appearance. The Operations Manager vacuumed the carpet but her Initial response (when we said the carpet was still in a dirty state) was totally unsatisfactory - she said " other guests had been happy to stay in the room" and that the 'deep clean' was on their long term 'to do list'.
Review 90:Once they had accepted that we had no intention of staying in such poor and dirty conditions (and they were unable to offer another room) they refunded our money and the staff did make an effort to find alternative accommodation (we were attending a family wedding in the area the following day) They found us a B&B in Matlock.
Review 91:Nothing, all was good!
Review 92:Ambience and atmosphere, peaceful and calm. Also positively enjoyed meeting fellow guests at mealtimes over shared tables of eight.
Review 93:The room cobwebs, wallpaper falling off, body hair around shower, walls that thin you could hear people going toilet & actual conversations, towels old & fraying no Wifi as kept saying out of range
Review 94:Swimming pool was nice. Location was nice
Review 95:Dinner on the second night was poor. Portions we received were pale and smaller to what other guest surrounding us received
Review 96:Breakfast very good as was our dinner one night.
Review 97:The decor was dated particularly in the bedroom. The bathroom was of a poor standard, broken towel rail, and had not been cleaned recently.
Review 98:The setting was lovely. The staff were friendly but not overly helpful. The single room was an adequate size.
Review 99:the staff were amazing.couldnt be more helpful.we held our wedding day on 1st of August there.i would recommend to anyone.the food was fantastic the staff were brilliant and so very polite.will stay there again soon on the themes evening.for a lovely stay and good food and to see the staff again
Review 100:We really enjoyed the pool and the facilities and location was lovely. We upgraded our room and the view was just beautiful and well equipped with tea facilities , a spacious bathroom and a comfortable bed . We would definitely recommend this hotel !
Review 101:A bit dated and high up places in the room could do with a clean, a few cobwebs. Toilet in en suite lacked water pressure. No escorting to your room to show you where to stay, once there found door lock strange went back to reception for help and given instructions not shown which all could have been done if escorted to room. Later found instructions on what to do if a fire occurs !
Review 102:Good food
Review 103:The Whole place was Very very tired. The Mews was ridiculous (4ft 6 in bed in a 6ft 6 in wide room). Bed uncomfortable, some 100m from the Hotel and 70Ft above it steep road no parking at the Mews. All in all a very bad experience which I consider that you would not wish to be associated with.
Review 104:The location, The Swimming Pool & outside appearance and situation
Review 105:The room was dirty and hadn't been decorated in decades. The wallpaper was peeling off, the pictures were all off centre and the bath hadn't been cleaned properly and had masking tape along the side. The ceiling plaster was coming off in places. The manager tried to argue that it was fine, until we took him up to the room to point out all of this (and more). The free wifi also only works downstairs. I was also disappointed that there was not a bar or anything else to do in the evening. We left after one night, even though we'd booked three. And, we were also asked if we'd like to book another room as we aren't married yet. There was also Christian music played at a very loud volume throughout the lobby which made me feel uncomfortable.
Review 106:Location
Review 107:Room (in annex) in need of refurbishment and Wifi signal not received there.
Review 108:Stunning views and great swimming pool. Staff friendly and helpful. Very reasonably priced.
Review 109:Although rooms were clean they were starting to show signs of wear and year such as threadbare carpets. Also no en suite facilities and shared bathroom was a bath rather than a shower so I took to showering in pool area in costume not ideal.
Review 110:Rooms were basic but clean and pool was kept clean
Review 111:Shared bath room but it was ok for a one night stay. Would be better with on suite for a longer stay.
Review 112:I loved everything about the stay apart from what I said in my dislike comment but that was interesting for a one night stay. Location, the hotel and its history I loved. It was nice to revisit afternearly over 40 years.
Review 113:Twin room was spacious but a bit tired, carpet was worn in places and in need of attention.
Review 114:Location was fantastic, lovely grounds and the swimming pool was a bonus. Great breakfast and good value for money.
Review 115:Welcoming staff on arrival, they were accommodating to our needs . A lovely cup of tea on arrival. Beautiful and cared for grounds. A Clean pool to use.
Review 116:We felt out of place as we were the youngest couple by a considerable way. Also when we went for breakfast the tables were either full or reserved, meaning we had to get breakfast elsewhere. We stayed in the annex and not the castle, it wasn't advertised as an annex room which was separate from the main building.
Review 117:Location was good, bed was comfy.
Review 118:The staff were great - friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is excellent and the food was delicious and substantial. The location is stunning and the building itself is quirky and atmospheric.
Review 119:Mixed changing room at the pool
Review 120:Such an amazing view Walkways to explore the hillside and admire the scenery. Liked the architecture, impressive stairwell and lounge.
Review 121:The views, the walks around the hotel grounds, the swimming pool, the breakfasts, free table tennis, the shower in the en suite, the size of the room, the peace and quiet, the books to read, the helpful receptionists who always smiled.
Review 122:the only thing we didn't really like was the fact that when dining , there wasn't hardly any tables for 2 people. People tend to go to places like this for a romantic or quiet couple of days and chat over a nice meal and glass of wine without everyone else being involved.
Review 123:The pool was really good. The location was lovely. The breakfast was very good
Review 124:We were so dissapointed with our room we were so looking forward to staying in a castle, and from the outside we were expecting a lovely room, but it was worse than a blackpool bed and breakfast room , I felt like crying it was to be a romantic stay, the staff were lovely and breakfast was ok ,it was such a shame about the room wouldn't stay there again .
Review 125:The location and views were lovely
Review 126:The accommodation is very poor and cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Looks like the hotel was last decorated in the 1980's and they are still using the same bedding..
Review 127:Swimming pool and facilities for kids plus location
Review 128:poor service at breakfast and tea. seemed like new staff were starting, had to ask several times before being served. this might change I suppose. Overall I think this accomodation has more potential.
Review 129:swimming pool with views of the countryside. Good location for walking the high peak trail.
Review 130:Breakfast disappeared quickly so advised to get there early !
Review 131:Lovely place , historical, spiritual & relaxed Great swimming pool and grounds near to cromford mill and Matlock
Review 132:It needs a bit of money spent on it, also the cleanliness lacked a bit
Review 133:The staff and the residents were all lovely. The breakfasts were top class and the walks around the castle were lovely. The swimming pool was very nice
Review 134:Having stayed before, I was disappointed with the room I was allocated this time. It had very old and dirty carpeting. The fittings and furniture were old and the decor very tired. Small things like a kettle not working and a muddle over the type of room I'd booked let down the experience. Noisy floorboards from the room above disturbed me and those in my bathroom must have disturbed the occupier of the room below.
Review 135:The location is excellent and grounds are extensive and quite beautiful. A swimming pool is available. Although run by a Christian organisation, this is not thrust at you. The staff for the most part are very helpful, always asking if everything is okay. The buffet breakfast is a treat.
Review 136:The location and the views were fabulous. The staff were helpful and the buffet style breakfast was first class with more than enough quality food, starting with "proper" porridge.
Review 137:Room(at the back)looking rather tired and in need of refurb.Shower u/s.ROOM 25
Review 138:Location - lovely ground,swimming pool,staff v friendly and excellent breakfast
