Clonyard House Hotel descritpion

This small, family-run hotel is beautifully situated on 7 acres of mature gardens and woodlands, in a secluded position within a national scenic area near the Solway coast.
Between the villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford, Clonyard is set in southwest Scotland, 4 miles south from Dalbeattie on route A710. During your stay you can explore the numerous small villages which are dotted about the countryside, each with its own individual charm, or pay a visit to the country town of Kirkcudbright which is well known in art circles for its historical connections with the 'Glasgow Boys'.
The Thompson family who have owned the Clonyard for over 35 years spent many years prior to this in East Africa. Their affinity to that continent can still be seen around the hotel.

Reviews for Clonyard House Hotel

Review 1:A very warm and friendly welcome and excellent service throughout my short stay. I was to arrive late and the owner telephoned to ask if I'd like a sandwich when I got there. The bar, the roaring fire and the unusual artefacts and pictures are the main draw. The room was spacious and had everything I needed.

Review 2:Teri, Neal and staff are always friendly and wanting to make your stay as comfortable and as pleasurable as possible. Great food the best in the area and all at reasonable prices. That's why we keep going back.

Review 3:No wi fi and broken hair dryer in room. Very unhelpful manager - staff were good but the manager was rude throughout the trip. Value for money was very bad.

Review 4:Quality of meals although breakfast wasn't bad. A bit run down as a hotel and needing property maintenance although you feel they are working on it, limited availability of local taxis if busy and you need to get to a station or elsewhere (book ahead!).

Review 5:Hard working staff trying to improve the hotel. Some nice walks and beaches not too far away, but you are in the countryside, so without transport (especially with kids) it appears there is not so much else to do in the immediate vicinity.

Review 6:There is an on-going,18 month programme of renewal and refurbishment and much is already improved but it will be really lovely when it is finished.

Review 7:The hotel is full of character and interesting features set in beautiful wooded grounds. It is owner managed and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Review 8:Hotel grounds could do with some gardening care before new growth gets going and trees might benefit from some thinning as ambient light is limited.

Review 9:Friendly staff and tasty breakfast

Review 10:nothing to dislike about the Clonyard

Review 11:The breakfasts were absolutely lovely and we had a lovely Christmas meal on the Sunday with our family. The big house has lots of character we thoroughly enjoyed our stay just before Christmas

Review 12:Overwhelming stale cooking smell that hit you as soon as you walked into the hotel. Indifference of staff,ie we were not shown to our room merely given the key and directions! Room itself smelled stale and musty. Had obviously not been dusted or vacuumed properly in a very long time.Beer not good and no idea what wine I had in the bar,no choice given only large or small.Bar area in desperate need of refurbishment. The young staff needed more training in all areas. With effort it could be an amazing place to stay but at the moment it is just mediocre. Glad I had'nt booked for more than overnight.

Review 13:Bed very comfortable. Breakfast very good. Ideal room for the dog as it opened into a lovely garden area. Lovely old house, very quiet. Able to gain access to the room without walking through the hotel.

Review 14:The hotel is very tired needs refurbishment, but still retains its character.

Review 15:The house itself is lovely but in need of a refurbishment. I have visited the Clonyard many times over 30 years but this is the first time we have stayed. Staff were lovely, breakfast was very good, very big portions. Brilliant setting with beautiful grounds. We very enjoyable stay.

Review 16:Room door jammed - only opened by using heavy shoulder barge, room not serviced after first night of two booked, disruptive noise from adjoining rooms, barely cleaned utensils and cups in restaurant. Sad to report all this as we enjoyed previous stay at this hotel 2 years ago

Review 17:Great location, could be a splendid place to stay if basic issues were addressed

Review 18:The cleanliness of the room was poor. Whilst the staff tried hard, attention to detail was lacking. There was a strong smell of damp in our room and bathroom. The general décor of the rooms and outer buildings was tired looking. Light bulbs needed replacing in our room, a second coat of paint was obviously needed in areas of the hotel. All this is important attention to detail which is paramount in the hotel business.

Review 19:The breakfast was great and the dining room was pleasant. The grounds were lovely and well tended. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Review 20:Only thing was the rooms were a little dated,

Review 21:The staff were fabulous, they made you feel welcome and we were well looked after, special mention to Barbara and Rachel. We will be going back next year.

Review 22:I liked the rural location and the helpful staff. Nice grounds that you could walk in, as well as very comfortable beds. Drinks at bar reasonably priced and the breakfast was good, with a varied selection.

Review 23:We had very spacious room (No 2)with four poster bed plus huge bathroom. Due to the location within a wooded area we had an excellent night's sleep. The breakfast and meals in the hotel were good and the bar was reasonably stocked. There were nearby paths to Dalbeattie, Kippford and Rockcliffe (about 30 - 45 mins) with fantastic sea views. By car, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, and Sandyhills are within easy reach.

Review 58:The rooms were adequate enough, a bit dated but there is a back door to a sitting area which is good.

Review 60:Decor and bathrooms are somewhat tired and could do with some refurbishment.

Review 76:No hot water when we went to use the bathroom! Were told that the boiler had been playing up. No compensation offered.

Review 77:A busy place with lots of locals coming in for meals. Food was good.

Review 78:the rooms were very tired. bathrooms were tiny and needed upgrading. the shower was small, dirty and had trouble getting hot water. carpet in the first room i was given was full of stains. bedding ie duvet needed replacing

Review 83:all staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Food was good relaxed surroundings. Our dog was made very welcome in the hotel with great walks for him close by.

Review 84:Tired decor overall, shower had poor pressure (as did the toilet cistern with a 20 minute refill) and needed a thorough clean and sealant replaced, untidy corridor with discoloured net curtains, restaurant waiting staff needing a little more training.

Review 85:Good breakfast, quiet room with small personal patio for enjoying the hotel garden. Dinner was of excellent quality and quantity - a good selection of really tasty home cooked dishes.
