Reviews for Alison House Hotel
Review 1:Not terrible but room a little cold even with radiators on. Was a particularly cold night however
Review 2:Pleasant Hotel - Helpful and Friendly Asst Manager, Good location. Would be lovely in the summer for a weekend break. Food was good
Review 3:The friendly helpful staff helped make our stay a great one ..a fab breakfast &evening meal was also a great advantage..this was our second visit to Alison House & we look forward to going back again soon
Review 4:the local pub shut at 10 pm but it was okay, there were 3 more with in 1 min walk!
Review 5:the bed was very good, the breakfast also. I have booked this hotel twice now as the best option on a budget for the location, but it is not a budget hotel by any means. I have also stayed here with my wife and she loved the hotel.
Review 6:What a wonderful location. Lovely views of the garden from our room and the countryside beyond. So quiet too. Great breakfast. Close to Matlock Bath and a good place to visit the rest of the dales and peaks.
Review 7:I was staying in one of the wheelchair access rooms, and the bathroom was excellent on the whole - there was a bit of a step to enter it. A ramp here wouldn't go amiss, and perhaps a handle for those like myself who wasn't wheelchair bound but isn't great with steps.
Review 8:My family and I were in the area to see the Matlock Bath Illuminations, and given what a nightmare that place is for parking - we wanted a nice hotel that had its own. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and the food was excellent, as were the staff that waited on us.
Review 9:Location was a slight issue (it was a good 30 mins walk to Matlock Bath on foot). Room was very small n I was charged VAT on top of the advertised price (no where on the website did it mention VAT wasn't included). View from our small room was of the kitchen (i could wave to the chef).
Review 10:Hotel was amazing. Ensuite was lovely as was breakfast.
Review 11:we asked for a twin as we are used to superking beds and can't sleep well in smaller. given a family room which not only had 2 single but also had a superking as well! it also had 2 chairs and lots of space for luggage etc. shower room was small and basic but fine. dinner was good value for money and well cooked. Breakfast was excellent - plenty and again well cooked. Great quiet location close to Derby/Matlock road but could set well back so we could not hear any traffic at all - we are very light sleepers. we rarely come this way but would definitely stay here again and certainly recommend it.
Review 12:We stayed in room 15 in The Cottage which had steep & narrow stairs leading up to it. Bathroom was old fashioned. I'm sure the rooms in the main hotel would have been more accessible.
Review 13:Very friendly & helpful staff. Quiet location. Lovely breakfasts. Bed was very comfortable and the room very clean.
Review 14:Could be modernised in decor but greatoverall
Review 15:Staff were friendly and welcoming. Highly informative on local events and transport. Close to lumdales falls where theres a series of water falls which are spectacular
Review 16:Stayed here before, loved it then and did this time. staff very helpful and accommodating to our needs, food excellent lovely place to be what more needs to be said, will be visiting again.
Review 17:Location of the room (the windows were at high level and felt as though we were in the basement - rooms in the main building were probably a lot better) and furniture was flimsy. Dinner menu was limited and not very inspiring.
Review 18:Good location you could walk to village and eat in other restaurants. Breakfast was good. Staff friendly.
Review 19:The quietness was like a breath of fresh air.The staff were very welcoming and attended every need. All in all it was a lovely place to stay and would recommend to anyone .
Review 20:Our room felt very warm even with the window open (no air-conditioning) but this was the only thing which is really negligible.
Review 21:Lovely spacious bedroom with beautiful view of the gardens. Great spacious bathroom making it feel home from home. Everything you'd expect in the bedroom from tea/coffee making facilities, iron & hairdryer to tv & really comfortable bed. Staff were polite, personable & helpful. Dinner was superb. The morningshad everything we could have wanted with a freshly individually made cooked Breakfast. Super locations for a walk to Cromford mill, Cromford town, Cromford canal, Willesley Castle, Masson Mill & Matlock Bath where the Heights of Abraham is a must see.
Review 22:Wonderful hotel for taking a dog! All the staff loved ours and she was made most welcome. The staff are lovely and can't do more for you. Our room was a bit basic for a 4* but we had the room right opposite the fire exit downstairs so we could take the dog out whenever she wanted. Would recommend this lovely hotel. The grounds although not big were beautiful and well cared for. Only 5 mins walk from Cromford and about 10-15 mins walk from Cromford Mill. They do hold wedding receptions here so might be worth checking when booking.
Review 23:After one night in the Arkwright Suite we are hooked on this hotel. Fantastic hotel with stunning rooms, views and gardens, the staff are excellent! We will definitely be back. (Try the "Alison house special" breakfast....amazing!)
Review 24:There were no problems.
Review 25:A delightful stay even if only for one night. A haven of peace in beautiful surroundings. Both dinner and breakfast were of a high quality with friendly service. My room was clean and cosy and the bed comfortable. I would certainly hope to return.
Review 26:Our room was not a garden view (as per your website) and was somewhat basic. The major issue was the lack of a proper wardrobe with only a shallow cupboard with hooks.
Review 27:The staff were excellent, as was the food.
Review 28:The address of this property leads you to believe it is in Matlock however it s not. The hotel is tired and in need of an update. The pipe work is very noisy!
Review 29:The staff at the hotel are lovely and very helpful. The breakfast is really good.
Review 30:The only downside was the lager was a bit flat :(
Review 31:Lovely surroundings, the building is old but full of character. Friendly staff. Beautiful room, very spacious and comfortable.
Review 32:Old building so old noisy plumbing; the person above thumping about from 6am on a Sun morning was a moot point but not the hotel's fault. Just makes me reiterate I do not want anyone above me on a hotel stay.
Review 33:Big, quiet airy room with beautiful view of back garden.
Review 34:Old fashioned decor in the bedroom Ditto bathroom fixtures and fittings Sofas in the lounge were the wrong shape for me!
Review 35:Setting, the welcome, the large room and friendly service Excellent breakfast
Review 36:One dirty cup on breakfast table setting. Replaced when pointed out & apology received. Double room but only one chair.
Review 37:Access to visitor atractions in area
Review 38:Although the double bed was comfortable it was very squeaky. The floorboards also squeaked badly when walked upon. No shelving in the bathroom only a window cill which was not convenient as it was behind/above toilet.
Review 39:Warm welcome - quality cotton sheets & thick soft white towels - excellent breakfast
Review 40:Nothing. Would recommend staying here.
Review 41:Friendly and helpful staff. Reported a faulty tap in Bathroom, and was repaired within the hour. Beautiful surroundings. Excellent location.
Review 42:My room was very dismally decorated and although I chose the disabled room purely from a cost point of view as a late booking it felt like I was in an old peoples home. Bathroom clinically whitewashed. The radiator was extremely hot with the window open!. I could hear walking above the room and every time the toilet flushed or tap switched on it felt like it was in my room. I could also hear chatting. Very noisy. This part of the hotel "the cottage" could really do with a spruce up. Mould on the windows behind the net curtains isn't pleasant and cream carpet going upstairs is in need of a shampoo or replace. .
Review 43:Very comfortable bed and pillows. Shower very powerful. Plenty of coffee/tea etc in room and toiletries. I had no time for the full breakfast but it looked very good and the cold selection was extensive and good quality. Best coffee I've had in ages! Very good service when checking out. Would stay again bit different room and perhaps not on business as area is beautiful. Gardens well cared for creating a lovely sunny view at breakfast.
Review 44:Having to complain about poor standard of room cleanliness. Sorted after day three. Thought dinner menu was a bit on the expensive side.
Review 45:Helpful and cheerful staff. Large airy room Breakfast!
Review 46:Matlock Bath town. Crummy & very outdated. No problem with all the bikers, in fact most were very polite. Lot of noise from fire doors shutting and very fast / running water. No good for a lie in !
Review 47:Couldn't turn shower to warmer water - but in sons' room they couldn't turn it cooler!
Review 48:Staff were helpful and made Mum's 90th birthday a memorable day.
Review 49:The wedding shut down the restaurant so had to eat out.
Review 50:Reaction of staff when they realised we were not part of the wedding group and moved us to a quiet part of the Hotel
Review 51:The staff were efficient, welcoming and friendly. 'Alison House' hotel is set in magnificent well tended grounds that enhanced the views, from our room, of the superb Derbyshire countryside. Excellent food.
Review 52:Bedroom wasn't cleaned/tidied/bed made on the second day (Sunday).
Review 53:Huge suite, both bedroom & bathroom were luxurious, hardly a guest house! We had a lovely Valentine's meal consisting of three generous home-made courses plus a glass of bubbly, amazing quality & value.
Review 54:Room 11 was very noisy you heard the people talking and walking around, the toilet flushing, breakfast was cold the first morning. I would not stay here again especially in the cottage or annex. Very disappointed especially as it's was for valentines weekend.
Review 55:The located was good for our hikes.
Review 56:Advertised as deleuxe room, bathroom had holes in lino that were stuck back down. Showerheads on both bath and shower were broken. There was no hot water in the morning for a shower. The matress dipped in the middle and the room stunk of paint. There were cobwebs all over the room. There was nothing deluxe about this room.
Review 57:The house was tired and badly in need of decorating. The central heating in our large bedroom was incredibly noisy, rumbling and gurgling all night. The housekeeping was below par. The first morning our bed was not made up at all. There were dead flies under the radiator pipes - in January, they must have been there for months. No attempt was made to vacuum our room in the three days we were there.
Review 58:Sharon and her staff were pleasant and friendly without being pushy. The food was pretty good but not exceptional. Our room was large and warm. The area and grounds are stunning though Alison house itself needs major refubishment.
Review 59:Bedroom and bathroom need modernising with better decor matching decor. Bed needs new mattress.
Review 60:Dining room was lovely with nice decor. Location was good with pretty views.
Review 61:dark approach road - 2/3 lamps would help and encourage guests to walk into the village rather than take a car
Review 62:Quirky room Excellent evening dinner and breakfast Value for money Courteous staff
Review 63:The young guy on reception knew nothing about the tourist trips,
Review 64:the lounge was very pleasant to sit in and talk to the other visitors and the location of the hotel was pleasant
Review 65:Nothing
Review 66:Tranquility , ambiance and parkland setting. Staff friendly and attentive and with a pleasant manner. I enjoyed the breakfast , especially my first experience of Derbyshire oatcakes . Also has bar and lounge as a useful social space.
Review 67:The only minor irritant was the mattress as detailed above.
Review 68:Lovely hotel, with really friendly welcoming staff. We were allocated the Arkwright Room, which was lovely and roomy with great views and a fabulous bathroom. It could have done with the window sill cleaning as there were several dead flies on it. The bed was huge, but you rolled into the middle if you slept on the left side (facing the bed from the bottom). The breakfast was faultless and the staff were really nice. Overrall a great place to stay, and I would definitely stay there again.
Review 69:cobwebs on ceiling and you can hear other guests using the plumbing (sinks and toilet flushing). so I would recommend a standard room.
Review 70:this hotel was excellent, set in stunning grounds, a beautiful Georgian house, well kept. staff were friendly and efficient, we had small double room which was clean comfy, food was fantastic. I would recommend this hotel . I have booked for next year already.
Review 71:Only the pillows!
Review 72:Comfortable bed, lovely view from windows, bath for aching muscles, friendly and helpful staff, super food, good atmosphere generally.
Review 73:The dinner menu, but that's a personal opinion.
Review 74:We can only be extremely complimentary about all aspects of this hotel. The only little gripe was the rather feeble shower but so what, we're on holiday!
Review 75:Difficult to find (I walked into the front hall of the private house next door!). Limited choice for non-meat eaters on the dinner menu and the restaurant lacked ambiance as there were not many other customers. The shower room was a little dated, without the character of the bedroom, but it was perfectly adequate and clean.
Review 76:Warm and informative welcome. Large bedroom, plenty of character and a very comfortable bed. Well heated. Parking. Excellent breakfast with wide choice. Matlock, Buxton and the Derbyshire Dales are beautuful.
Review 77:Dinner menu in the room did not match actual menu. It ought to read sample menu.
Review 78:Dinner was excellent and at £20.00 very good value. Onion rings on the steak to die for.
Review 79:We were put in a family room (1double bed+single bed. When double room booked should be DOUBLE ROOM. Restaurant menu not very good, only 5 or 6 main meals to choose f rom. We ate out each night. Breakfast- had to help ourselves to toast, my wifes poached eggs were hard, coffee only luke warm, complained but only got a jug of hot water toheat our coffee up.
Review 80:The location could not be better Size of hotel is ideal for us. Size of room very good.
Review 81:Nothing to dislike.
Review 82:Very comfortable hotel. Our bedroom was lovely with views over the countryside and garden. Very pleasant, helpful staff and excellent breakfast buffet. A terrific location for touring the Peak District.
Review 83:The food was a little disappointing as the restaurant has a good reputation. Our steaks were alright but somewhat bland. They weren't prepared in a sauce and we had to ask for gravy.
Review 84:Bedroom large and comfortably furnished. The garden was interesting and well laid-out and there was easy walking connection to the interesting village of Cromford.
Review 85:My GPS sent me to the wrong end of the lane which was a bridle-way - not the fault of the hotel!
Review 86:Staff, service, helpfulness. Held the dinner service open slightly late as I was late arriving. Lovely building. Great breakfast.
Review 87:The food in the restaurant didn't have a "wow" factor you might expect for the price. It wasn't unpleasant, but was nothing to write home about. At the end of the eve, we discovered there were only about 10 tv channels to chose from. Freeview has more than that.
Review 88:Massive room and en-suit bathroom. Comfortable bed. Plentiful breakfast.
Review 89:Booked as a deluxe suite, very large bathroom but has no individual shower. Bath had shower head on taps but no curtains so water went every where on the floor. The bathroom had a rug at the bathside which was a huge trip hazard from a Health and safety point of view. The window sills were stuffed with tissues rather than filled with correct material. The fire grate in the bathroom had not been cleaned in weeks and had a huge cobweb beneath the fire grill. We chose to eat at the hotel for our evening meal. Big mistake. The started was nice, we ordered ribeye steak medium to well done and it came pink so I asked for it to be cooked for longer and when it was returned the plate had clearly been left with tomato, onion on which came back cold. The vegetables were poorly cooked with no imagination for being presented with no sauce. I am amazed that they present an evening meal that cost £16.95 with frozen chips in a 4 star hotel!!!!! The only saving grace to the evening meal was the cheese board. The dining room was too brightly lit and had absolutely no atmosphere. I think the female staff speak to the customers with very little respect calling us " You Guys". Not quite what I am used to. We went for a walk after the meal but no-one tells you that the road back to the main highway has no form of lighting and that you need a torch to prevent you from falling. We paid £92.00 for the accommodation plus £40.00 for evening meal we would have been better at the premier in and then going to the little restaurant in Cromford village called The Market Place @16.50 for three courses including wine, rather than have this poor experience. Will not be returning nor recommending on.
Review 90:The gardens.
Review 91:Shower over bath not brilliant. But old building so can't expect it to be.
Review 92:Staff so friendly & helpful. Beautiful grounds Stayed for one night. Would like to have stayed longer.
Review 93:Water pressure in the shower was a bit low.
Review 94:Characterful English house. Spacious rooms. Good evening meals and excellent breakfast, particularly the traditional Derby oat cakes.
Review 95:Stayed in "The cottage" - ground floor The room was "tired", wiring needs sorting out, extension cables looked unsafe. The bathroom was very tired and needs refitting a.s.a.p.
Review 96:Food excellent , both evening meal and breakfast, in particular the porridge. Staff very attentive and helpful. Plenty of parking and parking and location very good for local attractions.
Review 97:Problems with not getting any wifi signal. We walked into matlock and on coming back the road upto the hotel was very dark as not lit at all .
Review 98:The Staff were polite and room was nice and contained all we needed. There was a good choice of breakfast. The location was a short walk from matlock bath and an ideal location with good grounds.
Review 99:They have weddings regularly, so check before you book in case they have a wedding that night. Pathetic shower
Review 100:Good size room(no 10) Comfy large bed Excellent breakfast Quiet but see next section Staff
Review 101:A superb location with beautiful grounds and a building of character and historical importance. Superb food and a team of staff who were both welcoming and professional.
Review 102:Shower facility in en suite was below standard.
Review 103:Very friendly welcome. Breakfast excellent and dinner very good with a good variety of choice. Comfortable lounge to relax in after our meal with good bar service and friendly staff.
Review 104:Walls not soundproof and noisy neighbours! Bathroom very small and basic but OK for one night. Could all do with updating but pleasant room.
Review 105:Loved the fact that the room was in a separate annexe in beautiful surroundings.
Review 106:The shower was tray/door was a bit leaky and had to mop up with towels. Although this did not detract from our stay.
Review 107:Breakfast was excellent. The bacon was awesome and fresh eggs from the hens on site. Beautiful grounds and location
Review 108:We appreciated the warm welcome from the friendly staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. The room was fine, given that we were a last minute booking and were given the disabled access room. The facilities were excellent, the grounds looked lovely though sadly it was rather wet so we didn't have much opportunity to explore. The nearby location to the centre of Cromford made it ideal to meet up with the rest of the family who were staying there. They even allowed the family to come for breakfast on the day we left.
Review 109:There was no restaurant available sunday evening. some of the local eateries locally closed at 6 on a sunday .Would have liked a box of tissues in the room.
Review 110:Lovely pleasant staff. freshly cooked breakfast. nice dunking biscuits left in room every day. very comfortable room wi
Review 111:Shower ok but a bit lacking in power!
Review 112:Lovely, large comfortable room, friendly staff and great breakfasts. Good location in an interesting village. Definite recommendation from us!
Review 113:Absolutely superb staff , good quality /comfy room and a wicked cooked breakfast ! The chief even came out and gave us a couple of sausages for our dog !! Would definately stay again .
Review 114:A little further from the main town than I expected
Review 115:Friendly attentive staff, the Hotel is in a nice quite area with good views of the surrounding countryside, has spacious rooms and the breakfast was excellent
Review 116:proper linen table cloths fresh flowers fabulous breakfast comfortable beds great location walking distance from railway station friendly staff separate annex for our group good value
Review 117:Our room was very warm - directly above hot water pipes we think.
Review 118:A very genuine and friendly welcome. Excellent location. Good parking. Quiet. Good breakfast.
Review 119:Found the bed too hard. All night there was the sound of a fan going which seemed to be coming from the chimney breast, kept us awake! Room 6.
Review 120:Very clean, staff friendly. Breakfast good with plenty of choice. Bedroom large, very clean, en-suite again ver clean.
Review 121:Wasn't really there long enough to not like anything about the hotel!
Review 122:Exactly what was needed after a hectic couple of days in the music industry, peace quiet and in a great location.
Review 123:There was nowhere, even in what was a big room, to put anything, from unpacking the suitcase to finding a space for toiletries in the cramped bathroom. The evening meal was, to be kind, very average. The 'ribeye' steak was very thin, over cooked and served with a very indifferent mix of cauliflower and cubed root vegetables with no sauce. Not in the least bit appetising. After dinner coffee was instant coffee served in a teapot. I would have hoped that such practices died out with the 1980s. Very disappointing.
Review 124:Pleasant setting, comfortable bed, friendly staff. Reasonably good quality breakfast.
Review 125:the shower didn't maintain its temperature fluctuated from hot to cold
Review 126:Beautiful surroundings Clean and lovely spacious room Friendly and helpful staff Excellent location
Review 127:We had hoped to find more country pubs in the area providing good evening meals without being of the standard chain variety . Perhaps we didn't know where to look.
Review 128:The hotel was convenient for exploring the region taking in walks in the White Peaks, visits to stately homes, and towns like Buxton ,Bakewell and Ashbourne.
Review 129:Fantastic location. Beautiful gardens, small play area and shops, pubs a few minutes walk away. Rooms clean and have hair dryer, iron/board, tea and coffee making facilities, tv and good WiFi. Lots of tourist attractions close by. Very helpful staff couldn't do enough for us, very efficient and friendly. Breakfast good. We went by car but noticed bus routes and train station close to the hotel.
Review 130:Only I e comment - tho the shower was spotless and new the flow of the water out of the shower head varied
Review 131:The hotel is beautifully furnished - the rooms are immaculate and the staff very welcoming
Review 132:We had carrots with every evening meal and some green veg. Our last evening meal was carrots only, no other veg (no greens) bit of a let down. Carrots don`t go well with salmon!
Review 133:First class room with splendid views. Breakfast was all you wanted, cooked food properly cooked and well presented. Dinner meals also nicely cooked with tasty meat and veg. Very good all round break for us.
Review 134:There was nothing I didnt like.
Review 135:The hotel was excellent and set within lovely grounds, we could't find fault with any of it. The staff were very helpful, the food was well presented and great value for money. We both wished we could have stayed longer but we are looking to return to the hotel soon with our children.
The Fine Print
