Swan Inn descritpion

This 16th-century Cotswolds inn offers award-winning cuisine, free Wi-Fi and free parking in Swinbrook, just 5 minutes’ drive from the medieval market town of Burford. Nestled on the bank of the Windrush River, the building oozes character, with log fires, flagstone floors, and traditional oak-framed ceilings.
Rooms at Swan Inn are situated in either the charming building itself, or in its converted stone barn. Every room has a flat-screen TV with Sky channels, tea and coffee making facilities, and an en suite bathroom. Some even boast a Victorian roll-top bath.
The Swan's pub and restaurant have won numerous awards, including 2 AA Rosettes and the Good Pub Guide’s "Oxfordshire Country Dining Pub of the Year". British dishes with a modern twist are served using fresh, seasonal produce sourced from the surrounding area. Local ales and beers are stocked from the Cotswold Brewing Company.
Although set in a tranquil location, the inn is just a 3-minute drive from the A40 and 7 minutes' drive from Burford. Oxford is 35 minutes’ drive away and Blenheim Palace, where Winston Churchill was born, is a 30-minute journey by car.

Reviews for Swan Inn

Review 1:This is a very minor detail - both easy chair and desk chair covers were stained.

Review 2:The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. My room was restful with excellent supplies of tea etc. The bed was very comfy.Food at breakfast and dinner was great quality.

Review 3:Evening meal and being asked to add 10% to final bill as service charge. When we complained about our evening meal we were told they knew about the chips etc and that the food was " a work in progress ". Then to be asked for an extra 10% was cheeky but we paid up anyway.

Review 4:Room was good and nicely decorated. Breakfast was good and well presented and served. Evening meal was disappointing as the chips were not fresh or hand cut but hard and cheap tasting. Fish was ok but not worth £13.50! Desert was also poor. Was asked to pay 10% extra on our bill for service charge!! Would not return or recommend.

Review 5:Poor breakfast service Tuesday 29th Sept 15. Doors not open at 08.00. Buffet not ready. Breakfast would be preferred from 07.30 as many other hotels in the area.

Review 6:Location, peaceful location. Nice rooms.

Review 7:No milk in room. No hand soap in bathroom. Bathroom blind very dirty and cushion on bed had clearly been taken outside and sat on as covered in grass. For £125 expect a decent coffee machine or cafeteria.

Review 8:Location very beautiful. Good breakfast and good evening meal.

Review 9:Our bedroom needed a "freshening up". Breakfast was quite an ordinary affair. No wi-fi in our room (or at least no mention of it in hotel info.

Review 10:Lovely location

Review 11:The emergency light' warning light in our room was extremely bright and spoiled my wife's sleep. Clearly a problem as previous occupants had stuck an Elastoplast over it. And the toilet seat would not stay ip!

Review 12:Location and comfort

Review 13:The inn has a wonderful history and the rooms are warm and comfortable. The gardens and surrounding area are beautiful with great walks available near by

Review 14:Friendly Staff help me to make my holiday more easy before I check-in. The comfort room is very cozy and lovely. The most I love is the gourmet provided in the restaurant. I will be back if I travel around Cotswold next time.

Review 15:It was too dark on the corner of the outside of the stable building by Stable 1 steps. Dangerous when walking over to dinner at night - better outdoor lighting is needed!

Review 16:The setting; the food; the staff; the room; the chickens! The staff went over and above to make our stay special in the light of us celebrating my parents' Diamond Wedding Anniversary!

Review 17:We didn't like being over-charged for drinks on our final bill. We strongly recommend that guests pay for drinks as they go.

Review 18:Charming, characterful property with a contemporary, fresh feel to the bedrooms. The complementary toiletries are natural, locally sourced and beautifully scented. The food is very good and the service friendly.

Review 19:Despite discussing with management, lukewarm showers were all that was available, unacceptable for any hotel, but particularly at this price. Would only recommend if they guarantee hot water.

Review 20:Location,food ,facilities.

Review 21:People playing music until early hours and causing a disturbance. When we told of disturbed night in the morning we were told by the staff that they thought the people above us in the Stable block might be noisy as they had attended the Wilderness festival! Why did the staff not mention there could be a problem and apologise that they could not move us? Very disappointing.

Review 22:The food, ambience and setting. We were placed in the stable block rooms 1 & 2 and the rooms were comfortable.

Review 23:Excellent quiet country location, well positioned for exploring the Cotswolds. A bonus for our friends being the Swan used as a location in Downton Abbey. Burford only 2 miles away, Bampton, 6, Blenheim 14. Even the rain didn't stop play.

Review 24:Room very comfortable with beautiful view. Breakfast in the conservatory was excellent with lovely view to the garden. Staff very helpful and friendly

Review 25:Only complaint is the need of air conditioning or at least a ceiling fan as you need to close the Windows and drapes for privacy and security.

Review 26:Pub atmosphere in restaurant Food was very good too. Room good size with everything you could need. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed it very much.

Review 27:We wasn't made aware we needed to book well in advance for a table, and staff all seemed to busy to explain that, so had to go to neighbouring village for evening meal which meant having to drive, so maybe we should have stayed there !

Review 28:Location

Review 29:The food was slightly disappointing although by no means bad. Because of it's remote location a car is a must (again not really a complaint as such just something to keep in mind if you're planning on going there).

Review 30:If you like the British countryside then this hotel couldn't be better situated - surrounded by beautiful fields and quaint villages. Room was nice and clean, bathroom very decent and staff were helpful and polite. Breakfast was also pretty good. Overall it was a great place to stay and I would go there again.

Review 31:Although we enjoyed our stay it felt like The Swan needed soebody cracking the whip. Overall score was 85% but it so easily could have been a 95%.

Review 32:The location is fantastic. The food was very good.

Review 33:There is nothing to not like as far as we are concerned :o)

Review 34:Such a fantastic idyllic little place in the middle of the countryside. Exactly what we wanted for our get away (and friends wedding visit). Stayed 2 nights - the room was superb - tastefully kitted out and the bathroom gorgeous (free products supplied lovely too). Extremely quiet little retreat - we stayed at the converted barn over the road from the main inn which suited us as it had a little garden and was on the river. Staff were helpful, accommodating and polite (and also work very hard as they were always there!). We ate in the pub on the Friday night and the potted mackerel followed by bavette steak meal was to die for - totally delicious and wonderfully presented. Breakfast was plentiful and everything was served with a smile. Would highly recommend.

Review 35:The weather

Review 36:Wonderful food and great atmosphere

Review 37:Excellent location, lovely dining room and accommodation.

Review 38:All of the above

Review 39:Shower temperature was not adjustable and so way too hot.

Review 40:Stunning room next to the river. Staff very accommodating.

Review 41:Nothing

Review 42:Location, WIFI

Review 43:Location Size of room

Review 44:Everything seemed to be rushed and staff didn't seem to care if you were staying or not

Review 45:None

Review 46:Friendly stafff

Review 47:Free standing bath with no handles

Review 48:Great accommodation, plus great food.

Review 49:handy to walks, travelling the area

Review 50:The location, the food and the atmosphere

Review 51:Would have preferred a shower.

Review 52:very comfortable staff are great

Review 53:Like it all

Review 54:Comfort , bed , bathrooms

Review 55:Compared to others we have stayed in this trip about $20.00 over priced.

Review 56:Nice location. Nice room.

Review 57:Having to go home!

Review 58:Lovely location and excellent food. Exactly what my wife and I were looking for.

Review 59:The rooms didn't have anything special about them so the overall impression was underwhelming. Breakfast was not available until 8am, which is a little late for a business traveller. In hindsight this wasn't an appropriate choice of accommodation for me.

Review 60:The location was lovely

Review 61:The rag rug in the bedroom it harbours dirt and looks out of character with the clean lines of the room

Review 62:Superb cooked breakfast Friendly competent staff Free drink as our room wasn't quite ready Beautiful buildings with tranquil outlook Quality rooms Relaxed atmosphere We will return

Review 63:TV and wifi reception intermittent (but we didn't really come to watch TV so not a big deal).

Review 64:Lovely quiet location, very friendly and helpful staff, good food and comfortable rooms.

Review 65:I would have liked a little lounge area to sit and relax but the bar and the restaurant area were all in one so there was nowhere to sit quietly. I was also a bit disappointed with the breakfast. The buffet table of cereals, fruit and juices was very limited in choice. The full english breakfast rated no more than 5 out of 10. Quality of bacon sausages not great and even the eggs overcooked.

Review 66:Very quaint inn down a long winding narrow lane. Staff were very friendly and the room we had The Old Forge Room was comfortable and clean. The setting was lovely with a stream across the road from the Inn an orchard at the back and chickens running freely in the garden.

Review 67:our bedroom was onthe small side with large bathroom space. Small"attic" window. TV in a very sill place! Would be nice to have a designated sittingroom area for those staying over night or two with friends instead of meeting round a table in the pub area..

Review 68:We liked the locality and village .

Review 69:It was a great surprise! Was not expecting it to be as super as it was for a good price ... Cosey pub, with a log fire and hearty gourmet food. Beautiful accommodation with lots of character, in a lovely location. Then just everything so convenient .. Lots of parking, wi-fi etc Can't wait it hopefully visit again!!

Review 70:Some of the window frames in the room I stayed in needed some attention. The french windows were jammed through wood expansion.

Review 71:Great atmosphere and wonderful countryside.

Review 72:Fire exit light in bedroom on all night disturbed sleep Cooked breakfast v.good , the cold buffet however not very appetising. Table cloth dirty and selection poor , the fresh fruit was all pretty much passed its best !

Review 73:Dinner and cooked breakfast very good.

Review 74:A double duvet may be cosy but does not work well for this mature couple! Twin beds wuold have worked much better for us, and for the practicalities of the otherwise charming room we had

Review 75:charming quiet inn; well modernised accommodation; food and drink

Review 76:Bathroom door in room didn't close. History of owners is questionable.

Review 77:Position was excellent total seclusion in Cotswolds countryside by river and ideal for doing some of the detailed walks. Equally easy access to surrounding towns & villages by car. Burford is 5mins away and is very nice.

Review 78:We were not informed when we made the booking that the pub would shut at 5pm therefore there was no food available during the evening.

Review 79:Room was lovely, very cosy and private in the converted barn.

Review 80:The food, although generally good, missed out on one or two occasions - unyielding and tasteless Christmas pudding, soggy breakfast kippers. They also had TV trouble - no BBC1. Not their fault, but irritating.

Review 81:Beautiful situation, nice little pub, very comfortable, with friendly and efficient staff.

Review 82:Thought lunch was just average. Both had pork but everything else was lovely

Review 83:Staff, ambiance, history of the pub and it's surroundings. I love that people can bring their dogs with them!

Review 84:I can't fault it!

Review 85:A wonderful wonderful experience. I do a lot of travelling and stay in chain hotels so it was an absolute treat to stay in a countryside B&B with gourmet food and comfortable surroundings

Review 86:No mobile signal at all (although, I'm sure for some this would be a blessing!)

Review 87:Friendly and helpful owner who makes you feel welcome. Peaceful surroundings..in fact, not a sound! Free Wifi access in stable rooms and main building

Review 88:Excellent: warmfull & helpfull welcome, beautifull environment, equipment & confort...everythging is there in the middle of the countryside. A real plaesure to stay in the Swan Inn ! I will come back.

Review 89:It was too hot in the room with a duvet on the bed that meant it was very hot for sleeping. The shower was very difficult to turn off with wet hands as the knob wouldn't turn. I did ask for a tablet of soap for the handbasin but nothing arrived. A pity there was no lounge style area to sit in the evening, there was a very nice garden but when it is cold that is no good.

Review 90:They did a good breakfast and the dinners were also very good. The staff were very friendly. The Inn was well placed for exploring the area.

Review 91:We have only two very small criticisms, namely the lack of shower curtains or a sceen above or around the bath so as to minimise a flood when showering, and the limited menu choice for dinner ( not everyone wants steak ... even when offered in three different guises! ). Having said that, the food is of high quality, even if the choice was disappointing on this night; and the wine list is very comprehensive.

Review 92:This is an absolute gem.It is situated in quiet, un spoilt countryside, and is very picturesque. Yet it is easily reached by car. We stayed on the occasion of my wife's 70th birthday, and loved it. We were given " Debbo's" room ( on the upper floor of the converted barn/stable block), and it is a lovely suite with beams,a large, very comfortable bed, plenty of storage room and is beautifully appointed. The Inn itself is still a village pub, as well as a restaurant and is also very atmospheric. It is but a short walk into the village, and the lovely old church is well worth a visit. As noted by another reviewer, the history re the Mitford family is interesting; and we also agree as to the scrambled eggs at breakfast! This was a superb stay, and we highly recommend the Swan for a short-break stay.

Review 93:Room was double-booked when we arrived. We were shunted to TheSwan's sister pub, The King's Head in Bledlington (about 15-20minutes drive away) for one night, and had to return to the Swan for thenext. Hardly the relaxing weekend we'd planned. Our night at TheKing's Head wasn't good as we were awoken at 4am by thecockerels they kept on site. We couldn't possibly understand whythey would keep such noisy birds where people wanted to sleep. Our nightat The Swan was better, we slept better and had a nice enough breakfast. However, we had booked a premium room and ended up with a standarddouble at both pubs which they attempted to charge the standard ratefor, not the online rate we would have paid if we had booked those roomsthrough this website. Overall a thoroughly disappointing stay.

Review 94:The surrounding area was nice and there were good local places to visitincluding Cotswold Wildlife Park and Crocodiles of the World.

Review 95:The room we stayed in was called the Orchard Store, very modern & luxurious, the bed was very comfortable & a great shower. We had lovely views of the garden where you could see the bantams running around. Beautiful countryside location!

Review 96:only complaint would be the shower.. it lost all water pressure whilst I was washing my hair..think someone else had turned on their shower. it was also to low for my 6'7' hubby.. head of shower was two inches above my head and I'm 5'7'!!

Review 97:Lovely old inn in beautiful location, easy to find too! Room & bathroon lovely, food good quality if a bit pricy.. £18 for most main courses.. great breakfast.. daughter raved about the blueberry pancakes! Hubby loved the wildlife outside bedroom window pheasants and birds of prey etc

Review 98:Service in restaurant for dinner could have been better. It wasn't busy but they got our order wrong and that of others. Water wasn't offered and we had to ask twice for a wine top up.....It was rather hot in the bedrooms at night.

Review 99:Food was good, particularly the scrambled eggs for breakfast. Accommodation and surroundings were pleasant and it's a good place to explore the Cotswolds.

Review 100:Friendly, relaxing
