Rich in original character and traditional charm, this cozy 19th-century country inn offers good beers, affordable food and comfortable rooms with private bathrooms in the converted former stable block.
Originally built in 1866, the Duke of Wellington was once a working farm and an inn for drovers. Traditionally built from Derbyshire limestone, the pub has a slate roof, roaring log fires and extensive gardens. Free wireless internet access is available in the bar.
There are 9 rooms with private bathrooms in the beautifully converted stable block. Set away from the main building, the rooms offer comfort and privacy. The stable block has its own flagstone courtyard and free private parking is available on site. All rooms have TVs and tea/coffee making facilities.
Recently redecorated in a traditional country style, the inn boasts extensive floral gardens with comfortable seating areas. There is also a fully enclosed and heated patio area, overlooking Riber Castle and the Derwent Valley.

Reviews for Duke Of Wellington - Residential Country Inn

Review 1:Lovely welcome,Staff were very helpful and friendly, room was spotlessly clean and warm, food was excellent. I feel that the room would have benefited from a couple of small tv chairs however.

Review 2:We stayed just one night, the food was excellent, the room was clean and very comfortable. We were made to feel welcome would definately stay here again.

Review 3:Nothing

Review 4:Made to fill really welcomed. Very clean and great location. Not to sure from out side as we drove up but really glad we stayed here. The food was amazing being a very good home cook myself so much so friends won't cook for me this was at a very high standard.well worth a stay and will recommend the Duke of Wellington to anyone.

Review 5:No shaver point or hairdryer; only a dining chair to sit in; the room was not made up after our first night so this was pointed out to staff who promised to see to it but the same thing happened on the second day. V poor service

Review 6:Staff were welcoming; parking is good; location is OK but the walk up the hill back from Matlock is punishing!

Review 7:Broken window catch Handles missing from both blinds Water leak in en suite No bulb in en suite mirror light Bedside table used for TV stand All of the above could easily have been put right rather than give an impression that Hotel doesn't care

Review 8:Friendly and efficient Staff Nice pub and food Room Comfortable and clean Good car park

Review 9:The bathroom in the room was in need of re decoration and breakfast was not included in the price

Review 10:The fact that the rooms were separate to the pub and that they were converted stables

Review 11:The bed was uncomfortable, the blinds didn't close properly, the bathroom and bedroom were very dusty, the heating didn't work properly and there was a musty damp smell in the room

Review 12:Spacious room and the towels were soft.

Review 13:Room was very small, no-where to sit and work, shower and shower room small and basic, is a pub with some outside rooms rather than Peak cottages. Quite noisy, shower fan running in next room kept me awake and floorboard noise from room above was loud.

Review 14:Room fittings were good quality and very clean, easy parking, didn't eat so can't comment, bed was fine, ok value

Review 15:The location is a bit of a distance from the centre - however the landlady was really helpful and sorted a taxi number - just £3 to save the steep climb back!!!!

Review 16:Friendly staff. Room although small had everything you need (except a hairdryer but that could be borrowed) food was nice and the pub was cosy. Was also quiz night which we enjoyed and actually won the bingo!!! Really enjoyable end to our holiday and wedding anniversary!

Review 17:Nothing really, not an easy place to find perhaps.

Review 18:A comfortable place out of the mad rush of the world. It was perfect for our needs and the rooms proved to be excellent.

Review 19:No wi fi, bed uncomfortable, not much room to get around the bed, loose connection on heated towel rail exposing wires and having to decide on having breakfast the night before

Review 20:Accomodation away from pub

Review 21:The mattress was way too soft. A new one is needed and our stay would have been perfect.

Review 22:Lovely room, friendly staff, fabulous food and perfect location.

Review 23:It was rather a warm evening and it was very difficult yo get enough air into a room. A fan would be a welcome addition.

Review 24:We had an evening meal - an excellent steak and very good value.

Review 25:Bed Paid for breakfast (not included to the room price) £10 approx for two, in fact have been provided with leftovers, asked for coffee, have been served with tea instead, after a second request - with a swill. Insulting.

Review 26:Easy access, TV, facilities, parking nearby, great views

Review 27:No wi fit in actual room had to go across to the hotel to get it. Parking was restricted on Sunday as restaurant was very busy

Review 28:Staff were great, food good and room was cosy when the weather was chilly

Review 29:There is certainly very little to complain about, the hill to get to the hotel is a bit of a put off to go anywhere but we were so happy with the pub and room we didnt feel the need to go elsewhere, ine downside was that there was a strong dog smell to the pub.

Review 30:We were welcomed by friendly staff, show to our room and was given good detail on how to access and use facilities, the room was beautiful, so cosy and comfortable we could not have been happier. The shower worked well and so did the other facilities, there was a nice little courtyard outside our room that was pleasant to sit in and finally, when we arrived for breakfast we were welcomed by a lovely little set up which was what was to be out breakfast area, good variety of breakfast to choose from.

Review 31:The wifi although free is only available in the bar..not good if an early morning or overnight connection is needed..could benefit from a hook on the back of the bathroom door

Review 32:The 'Cottage/Studios' were charming ,well equipped and comfortable Nice white fluffy towels and welcome tray Good TV facilities Did'nt have breakfast but it looked good..will definitely return

Review 33:Friendly local pub . Stayed for one night. Owners very friendly . Beds comfortable. Food cheap and great :) ! I would love to say thank you for a lovely night at The Duke Wellington! Especially to Andrzej for being so wonderful, friendly, warm, helpful, amazing:) We going to highly recommend your place to all our friends and family. Hope to be back soon ! Regards Edita

Review 34:Ideally located for visiting National Trust properties.Very comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts and good evening meals.Very friendly and helpful hosts

Review 35:Nothing about the accommodation. Taxi price to Matlock Bath was expensive

Review 36:Landlady was very friendly. Room was a lovely size and the breakfast was a perfect amount and not too early.

Review 37:Bit of a trek up from train station but you could easily get a cab for under a fiver. No complaints really.

Review 38:Gorgeous four poster bed and cosy room. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Food was lovely and really reasonable price too.

Review 39:Dogs Allowed in bar and near eating tables - was really off putting . Dogs were also in beer garden and we observed one 'toileting'

Review 40:Staying in the piggery - bedroom was cosy and had tea making facilities. Nice beer garden and extremely welcoming staff. Food very good pub grub. Excellent breakfast.

Review 41:A steep walk back to the hotel although you can get a taxi for £3.00 Small bathroom with problems getting the shower to work at the right temperature. No bath mat for first two nights of a three night stay. One hand towel was taken after the first night for no reason and the second towel was taken on the second night. Main objection to the place was the arrogance of the manager. (Manageress was lovely). We decided to eat in after a long day walking and was told by the Manager that our choices were not available due to them running the food down due to a new menu. I asked what was available and after making the order expected to be served what we ordered. However the full correct order that was advertised was not served up in its entirety. For example the bread advertised with the Mussels was Galetta but soft white bread was served instead. My partner ordered field mushroom served with stilton but instead the same type of mushroom was served up as was served for breakfast. When informing the manager, he just said that " I told you that we were running the food down" and then made an insincere apology and walked off. If you are not going to serve the food advertised then don't serve it. The manager needs to take some lessons from the manageress who was accommodating and pleasant. Would I stay there again....NO

Review 42:Comfortable bed, breakfast, good quality beer, quiet room.

Review 43:A minor thing was shower was tricky to get on the right temperature so needed a few more minutes but that's the only thing and we will stay here again.

Review 44:The staff were very friendly, breakfast was good value with both continental and cooked breakfast included. The room was very clean and well presented and a good location for all the Peak District sites.

Review 45:Breakfast not included in room price and expensive @ 5.99each extra

Review 46:Welcoming hosts, good pub food and accommodation. Enjoyed the rooms being in converted stables, gave feeling of privacy away from main pub.

Review 47:The en-suite could do with upgrading with walk in shower instead of climbing into bath to have a shower. No wifi in room

Review 48:The room was separate from the pub converted from milking sheds , lovely and warm comfortable room

Review 49:the external light and shaver light were not working. the positioning of the toilet / shower could have been different; allowing more room to move about

Review 50:the room was well decorated and set out. the food was very good and the staff polite and helpful

Review 51:The shower was very temperamental, the WiFi wouldn't connect to our phones

Review 52:Pub itself was lovely, meals were delicious, the room was well set up with everything you needed. Location was good but we had a car, might not be so good without a car.

Review 53:We liked the fact the accommodation was separate from the hotel. Staff were lovely and welcoming, and also the locals we got talking to in the evening were very friendly. Good food .We ate there on the evening and had a hearty breakfast before we left. Both meals excellent.. Would definitely stay again.

Review 54:In a nutshell .. The obstinate ... I hate my job landlord ... So much in fact , that we packed up and left ..... !!

Review 55:Very clean , very friendly pub . Landady was was superb .... Locals very friendly ... Great beer .....

Review 56:Cold shower

Review 57:Lovely atmosphere in the bar, roaring log fire was very welcoming. Food was great and good prices. The only let down was the shower being cold, which they said they would look at. I would thoroughly recommend and also return.

Review 58:The room is a little bit expensive for the conditions is offered. Wi-fi is very week and it's availabile only in restaurant.

Review 59:Excellent location, excellent food, the room was very clean.

Review 60:Shower would not warm up to above lukewarm.

Review 61:been able to eat in pub and not travel far. Rooms were ward ,very clean and comfortable. Food choices were very good and excellent value.

Review 62:No Tetley Smooth Flow to drink! No other shops, pubs or eateries in walkable distance. Didn't realise located at top of hill, so would be a long, hard, uphill walk back from town centre.

Review 63:Peaceful, very clean & well maintained. Spacious car park, and friendly staff. Reasonably priced 'pub grub'.

Review 64:Nothing.

Review 65:A very enjoyable stay, the hosts were very helpful. A lovely room in the barn conversion. Excellent breakfast and service which set us up for the day. Will return here when next in the area.

Review 66:Warm welcome, cosy bar and restaurant where we had an evening meal which was excellent value for money on Sunday evening. Cosy room, with comfy bed, en suite bathroom with lashings of hot water. Excellent breakfast, cereal, fresh fruit, continental and full English all available again excellent value as not included in room rate. Good old fashioned bed and breakfast just what was needed on a very cold winter weekend. We will be back.

Review 67:My room had a low door, part of it being a converted stables and though charming I did bang my head a couple of times. That said I'm real nit-picking with that, the room itself was fine. I'd stay there again without hesitation.

Review 68:Very warm welcome, friendly landlord and landlady. Lovely pub with great beer and very good food & a roaring open fire. Big bed, very comfortable, clean towels daily. Only real disappointment was it was fully booked for the following week, would have stayed again.

Review 69:The bathroom was very small and I could not use the shower for lack of space to enter

Review 70:All amenities were good although small in size the staff were excelant and very obliging food was excelant and very reasonably priced

Review 71:A little bit fussy but I found the bathroom a little small especially the hand basin as kept getting water splashed down me!

Review 72:The converted block in which we stayed was quiet and private (own front door). Lovely conversion with modern décor - spacious bedroom. Good food in the pub and very friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast too. Excellent stay.

Review 73:The major things were clean I.e bed, floor, shelves, bathroom, but window sills, blinds were very dusty, and one of the blinds didn't work but there were curtains so no problem. and there were a couple of cob webs on ceiling. Bathroom was tiered as the shower door didn't fit quite right and we had to get someone to fix the hot tap as it was leaking really bad when turned on. Just needs someone to check these things before people stay.

Review 74:I liked the fact that it was in a out house conversion, I liked the decor as it made it feel cosy. And I like the fact that after a walk back from the shops up the very steep hill you could have a drink in the pub before bed. The bed was comfortable. Parking is just outside the door.

Review 75:People stomping around on top of our room late at night

Review 76:Breakfast Reasonably priced, delicious dinners Convenience of being able to have a drink and dinner on site Staff were friendly

Review 77:We arrived late-ish but not very late: they had finished serving food (Tuesday evening in summer). Lot of noise outside rooms moving beer barrels circa 7am on Wednesday morning.

Review 78:Nice room, nice people, nice breakfast.

Review 79:Great views from the location at the top of a hill, but this also meant it was a very steep walk up from Matlock. No problem if you have a car, but you would not want to be walking up and down into town all day!

Review 80:Friendly hosts, pretty location, immaculate, quiet, room, excellent value for money.

Review 81:The room is absolutely and the staff in the pub are very friendly. Food was good too. Also matlock is a very picturesque town and is only a short drive from bakewell which is another beautiful place to visit.

Review 82:The General atmosphere and friendliness of all the staff was great, I was travelling alone with my 6 year old and he loved the little rooms outside plus a great garden to kick a ball about, food was lovely and so was the stay - highly recommended.

Review 83:Accommodation is situated in out buildings and is very clean..well decorated. Our room had a small shower and toilet which was ok. Pub is a lovely friendly locals pub serving nice beers and wines. Food was very well priced and very tasty. Steak night on a Thursday with the pub quiz was great. Recommended.

Review 86:me and my fiance loved our stay. the location is breathtaking. the rooms are comfortable and very clean. The lady checking us in was amazing.we felt very welcomed. we definetly will come back as the area had soo much to offer. absolutly loved it there

Review 87:There could have been some leaflets for tourists in the room and a dressing table with mirror. Also a hairdryer would have been good. However I was able to borrow the owners.

Review 88:The friendliness of the lady who owned it. The accommodation was basic but very clean and comfortable.

Review 89:It was only a small thing but the courtyard garden wasn't very well looked after.

Review 90:The room was small but comfortable and the bathroom very clean and well done maintained. The room was accessed via a small courtyard. Very nice. The staff were polite and we'll informed.

Review 91:Good option if you're travelling on to chatsworth house as we were.

Review 92:Electric shower was a bit weak.

Review 93:Super place to stay! Clean and comfortable. Very good breakfast.
