Reviews for Bower House Inn
Review 1:The staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. We needed to leave early in the morning and the owner came in early to make sure we had a decent breakfast to set us on our way. We'd definitely recommend Bower House Inn for anyone visiting the area.
Review 2:Friendly welcome, comfortable facilities, good sized bedroom/ pleasant bathroom. Very clean throughout. Staff attentive. Quality food , well-prepared and presented, good local produce and local ales. Excellent location and views.
Review 3:The bloody weather was bobbins! Seriously, everything at the Bower House was superb. Perfect location, just 9 miles from Wasdale Head.
Review 4:This group of friends have decided to make the annual pilgrimage to climb Scafell Pike. Our second year at the Bower House and we wouldn't stay anywhere else.
Review 5:I was in room 8, so if you are a light sleeper, then the drone from the boiler may disturb you. The room was also not very warm, but for one night, it didn't really matter. The biggest issue which is easily fixable was the TV, it was positioned on top of the Wardrobe, so due to viewing angle, could not be viewed easily whilst lying in bed. All it needs is a wall bracket that allows it to tilt.
Review 6:The hotel is sat amongst some fantastic scenery, the bar is very welcoming serving a good range of local beers and the food is good quality and reasonably priced.
Review 7:Too soft pillows, rooms very hot & 1 room was a little small when we had our walking gear in the room.
Review 8:The staff, food & location were excellent for our purposes.
Review 9:No proper day room for children.
Review 10:Excellent location. Some excellent staff - others not so good. Rooms warm and dry but small. Plumbing a bit unreliable.
Review 11:Noisy in the mornings. From about 6.30am people were banging around and you could hear the noise very easily through the walls. Intermittent WiFi.
Review 12:Fantastic location and very friendly staff. Very good food. Good drying room - very necessary!
Review 13:A splendid place that we booked on spec. Everything about our visit to Bower House Inn was excellent and I hope that we have the opportunity to stay here again.
Review 14:Our room was extremely hot. The radiator was on throughout our stay (including right through the night) and we couldn't turn it off. In the dining room during breakfast all the used crockery etc from each table was cleared onto another table rather than being taken back to the kitchen, which was somewhat off putting during breakfast. Overall the price we paid seemed expensive for the standard of accommodation.
Review 15:The location is beautiful and the staff are friendly.
Review 16:On our secon night there seemed to be a problem withy the heating and in the morning there was no hot water.
Review 17:The location for the West coast was just as required, without being on a busy road. Food in the inn was very good, particularly if you were there for the Sunday roast dinner.
Review 18:Just about everything else. Service was terrible having to wait over an hour for our evening meal. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and rooms were small and outdated.
Review 19:The location and our rooms were changed to adjoining ones when we got there.
Review 20:The only thing that annoyed me was the constant banging of pipes in my room. It was relentless and kept me awake, I was in room 6. My brother was in room 8 and didn't have a problem!!!! Also could not get signal on mobile.
Review 21:Excellent home cooked food, amazing setting, peace and quiet, friendly staff.
Review 22:Radiator / pipework, making noises all night even when turned off. Disturbed sleep which wasn`t good.
Review 23:Good location for hill walking. Staff friendly and helpful.
Review 24:room was supposed to be a superior room, I would question this as it was very small, had to boil the kettle on the windowsill with an extension cable. Everyone could see in through our ground floor window if the light was on so had to close the curtains early. The tv did not work . Breakfast could have been bigger portions.
Review 25:location
Review 26:Our twin room in the barn was quite small so this impeded the comfort factor slightly however everything else was so fabulous that it wouldn't stop us returning.
Review 27:Lovely staff, excellent food, fabulous location, will definatly return.
Review 28:No TV signal but not a problem as we did not go there to watch TV.
Review 29:Good views from room. Staff very friendly and helpful. Plenty of parking. Good food.
Review 30:Plastic cover on the mattress but I just take it off cos of my intolerance.
Review 31:The food, hospitality and location are great. Fifth time here and still as good as the first.
Review 32:Nothing.
Review 33:A great place to stay. Very friendly staff. Good food. Comfortable room. Good bar. Beautiful location. Dog friendly. Competitively priced. Highly recommended.
Review 34:Our room was quite small (however very cosy)
Review 35:Loved the place and the food. Rooms were clean, beds very comfortable. Staff was friendly. Bower House Inn has it's own bar with the beer garden were you can relax. Also loved their Bower House Inn Bitter!
Review 36:(Not a bad experience)- but a shelf nearby the sink in the bathroom would have been useful to hold toiletries
Review 37:flat apartment was beautifully furnished. Food was excellent and staff most helpful and friendly.
Review 38:Staff and food were great. After an accident the staff were extremely helpful providing ice and room service. We had to leave early and were only charged for the nights we stayed not the whole booking.
Review 39:We asked for a packed lunch which was expensive and not good value for money. The relief chef would not compromise on the menu when I asked for pickle on my cheese sandwich instead of pickillie. We also got an apple instead of a banana. £7.50 each for a mediocre lunch when the local shop do much better sandwiches is very bad form.
Review 40:The only thing is that you don't really get a wifi connection in the bedroom. That's a small detail though and in the bar there is a really good connection.
Review 41:Very friendly staff, great pub food, a really comfortable bed and a great location.
Review 42:Must have been the smallest double bed possible! Room was large enough for a proper bed and an armchair which would have been nice. Shower malfunctioning. In the bathroom there was nowhere to hang towels or layout spongebags etc. Apparently an upgrade as planned but meanwhile don't charge £90!
Review 43:Friendly welcome, inn of character and charm, good atmosphere, excellent food and real ale.
Review 44:Booked to show off Eskdale to our friends from Panama. They had something special to celebrate (spoiler alert!) and the wonderful staff were on hand to upgrade a room (free) and supply prosecco (great value for money) with congratulations from friendly warm staff. A great experience.
Review 45:Only stopping for one night
Review 46:staff very welcoming and friendly, food was delicious and reasonably priced, lovely atmosphere and the room was cosy and we wanted for nothing.
Review 47:Bathroom was a bit outdated and could use some TLC.
Review 48:Nice location, quiet. Good restaurant with excellent food. Very pet friendly, lots of space for dogs to run around.
Review 49:Room was okay but bathroom needs refurbishment/modernising. Bed was very firm, but others might find okay. Both lunch and evening menus were rather limited. Could do with offering selection of tapas style bar snacks and expanding the main menu.
Review 50:Location, nice breakfast, and helpful staff.
Review 51:I as a disabled person found the hotel was not suitable.steps to high and the baths were not easy to get into.sugest you advice this on your website
Review 52:We liked the staff, also the the surrounding.the garden was a very relaxing place to enjoy a drink and a chat with old friends and New ones made at the hotel .
Review 53:Bacon overcooked
Review 54:Friendliness of staff One person in particular talked with me in bar. I needed contact, as I live on my own.Have no visiting relations.
Review 55:If I had to think of a negative it would be the TV was unwatchable, but we didn't care, we didn't come away to watch TV
Review 56:we stayed here for 3 nights and have no complaints whatsoever! the room was clean and tidy the staff were friendly and the food was great!
Review 57:WiFi poor, breakfast ok, expected probably a bit more variety, but overall ok. Good value for money.
Review 58:Very old fashioned Inn, nice location, characteristic rooms. Nice and friendly staff. Incredible portions for dinner.
Review 59:Bar food very average, and they ran out of Orange Juice and Black Pudding at breakfast although the rest was good. There was no shaving light in the bathroom. We had the window open as it was hot, and experienced a surprising amount of road noise in the early hours from agricultural vehicles rattling past.
Review 60:Lovely location, glorious beer garden, good selection of real ales, friendy staff, spacious room with a comfy bed.
Review 61:when I rang before they said there was a separate vegetarian menu but this was not shown on the menu, but I could order on a pick and mix basis
Review 62:staff were friendly and good service
Review 63:Meal service was rather slow. Water pressure was poor in our bathroom.
Review 64:The location is ideal for exploring the Western Lakes and the staff is helpful. The bar and garden were very pleasant.
Review 65:Wifi reception was limited to the general public areas, easily addressed with wifi extenders. For business trips especially, wifi is an essential. The TV reception in the room was poor, rendering the TV useless. However, not to detract from an otherwise enjoyable stay
Review 66:The service was excellent and the food was very good, whilst quality produce is what they go for, it would be nice if they also focussed on the riches available locally.
Review 67:Only down side is be aware that cooked food at dinner and breakfast can take some time to arrive as I think they are limited in the staff they have at times.
Review 68:Room was comfy, with good bathroom and pub was good quality drinks and food - admittedly a limited menu but they did well sorting out my food intolerances so I give them extra credit for that. Loved the wonky traditional feel of the properly and when we stayed it was nice and quiet at night - even from the bar.
Review 69:TV reception abysmal!! room clean but basic. Booked a 'super superior room' so was expecting better for the price paid..
Review 70:quiet location in idyllic lakes location. Esk valley is beautiful.
Review 71:All of the staff were so welcoming and helpful in everyway. Totally dog friendly....fab! We enjoyed everything about our stay. The food was delicious.
Review 72:Bar food was only average to good with limited choice. My wife's 'Barnsley Chop' was poor, but other people seemed to find their food adequate. The breakfast made up for it.
Review 73:The room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The bar had an open fire and there was plenty of space to exercise our dog. The hotel is to be commended in recruiting young people to help socialise them into the workplace, the downside of this being that they didn't fully engage with the largely older clientele.
Review 74:on the first night we ate at the pub where the food was very good except for the one hour wait for the starters also the great gable room was noisy as it was directly over reception
Review 75:the pub was very clean with a very good breakfast
Review 76:Rooms are a little tired. Our room had tea stains up the wall. Bit difficult to plug in kettle at a safe placed. Bed was hard which may suit some people but my hips ached all night. Curtains just covered the window. Lots of noise from upstairs visitors which woke us up. Bath needs resealing around top as silicone very poor noticed that water had seeped through to carpet in main room. Could do with an extractor fan as gets very steamy.
Review 77:Fantastic place to stay. Staff are very friendly. Food superb. Lovely to find a place that takes dog(s) at a reasonable price. Breakfast was great the best scrambled eggs I've ever tasted. Great for a nights stay but not for longer than that.
Review 78:Beautiful location, very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is clean and nice. Homely atmosphere. I only stayed there for a night but will defo come back in the future. Thank you!
Review 79:Liked everything
Review 80:Bower house was a very relaxing night away. the staff couldn't do enough for you. we had a slight problem which was rectified straight away . We would definitely stay again if in that part of the country
Review 81:I particularly liked the location which was excellent for walkers and sightseers alike being very near the Western Fells and attractions such as L'all Ratty and Eskdale Mill.
Review 82:We took our evening meals in the Bar which buzzed with local chatter and had a most pleasing atmosphere. We saw fresh (not frozen) food being delivered.
Review 83:Small bedroom had room 3, no bedside table which was only annoying as I wear glasses! Not much worktop area to put toiletries in the bathroom, but clean and comfortable
Review 84:Really great location for Scafell pike which was the purpose of our trip, food quantity and quality is amazing, staff very friendly and couldn't do enough
Review 85:Comfy bed, good pub style food, good beer. Room was very clean with a good standard of facilities. Good shower with plenty of hot water. Staff very friendly.
Review 86:Room decor is very tired , old fashioned and basic and is in need of refurbishment especially the bathroom. The shower screen was particularly dirty. We asked for a quiet room and were given the one next to the main door into the barn accommodation and the stairs to the floor above ran up the side of it so pretty noisy. We booked a table in the bar for our meal but were put in the restaurant as they had given it away to someone else.
Review 87:Food in the pub was very good. Staff very friendly.
Review 88:There was a bit too cold in the room. Also it was impossible to open the windows to ventilate.
Review 89:The old fashioned hotel is in a quiet and inspiring valley with few buildings, narrow roads and tons of sheep. Inside it the labyrinth of corridors and stairs and the cosy traditional rooms give a taste of the authentic English countryside. Friendly staff and good food as well.
Review 90:Nothing
Review 91:Where to start... The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. The rooms were made out well - cleanliness is clearly a priority. As well as being clean they were warm and of a good size. The drinks are reasonably priced and a good vibe in the pub. And finally, the views were astonishing. Great place
Review 92:Everything. Perfect place to stay after a long day hiking. Great little bar. Open fires. Amazing food. Friendly attentive staff. Good size room. Comfy beds and clean fresh bathroom. Will definetly return.
Review 93:Checked in at 8 on a Friday, happy to hear they were still serving food until 9 which was very welcome to two weary travellers! Great breakfast which was included in the price of the room and comfortable rooms. Beautiful surroundings, free parking and a great beer garden with pretty fairy lights.
Review 94:One small negative was the noise from the kitchen extractor fan adjacent to our room. Although switched off at night it was a bit of a nuisance in the early evening. It only affects one room (Buttermere) so would avoid that bedroom in future.
Review 95:Food, drink & accommodation excellent and at very reasonable prices. Not to mention the location in a spectacular valley. Would definitely stay again.
Review 96:A lovely old inn in the best part of the Lake District. Log fires, low beamed ceilings to bang your head on, excellent food (locally sourced with enormous breakfasts), real ale. Friendly, welcoming staff. Go there!
Review 97:The bathrooms. They were ok and looked like they were cleaned regularly, but there was a lot of mould and the shower shield was coming away from the wall resulting in a very wet floor.
Review 98:The staff couldnt do enough for you, the food was good and reasonably priced, they even had entertainment in the bar, which was excellent. Only a short drive from wasdale for the mountains, (15-20 mins) which is why we picked this place. Ample parking, free (relatively fast) wifi, separate reception, great breakfast - overall very happy with the stay.
Review 99:Bedrooms are very small, although manageable and the food is not cheap for a pub type menu.
Review 100:I have always loved the Bower House having known it from childhood. The location is fabulous and you can imagine just how the the old inn looked some hundreds of years ago. Garden is great although not particularly used in November!
Review 101:We stayed for a long weekend of hiking and found the Bowerhouse Inn to be everything you'd want from a country pub experience. Clean, super friendly with good beer and large food servings. Would recommend
Review 102:Noise from fan in kitchen. No phone reception and wifi worked in certain locations
Review 103:Breakfast and food was fantastic. Room was big and clean shame about the fan
Review 104:We booked a specific table for our evening meal, but when we arrived a group of other people had taken it and clearly had no intention of moving, though our name was there on the table. We were a bit wimpish and said it was okay, but it would have been nice if the staff had at least asked them to move. Still, it's only a table - we had a great time anyway and we'll be back!
Review 105:The pub was great because it was busy with both visitors and locals, and was dog-friendly, which is nice to see even though we don't have a dog. The food was amazing - great selection of traditional and more adventurous hearty meals. Good selection of beers too.
Review 106:Be aware of SatNav directions taking you over Wrynose and Hard Knott Passes which are extremely challenging and not for the faint hearted!! If you are travelling in anything larger than a normal car don't even think of it!!
Review 107:Everything! Best place we stayed at during the weeks of touring the UK. Well worth the extra travelling to get out of the tourist filled Lakes villages. Amazing pub well frequented by the locals and visitors alike. Great garden for those with children or to just eat / drink outdoors on days that the weather allows. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly.
Review 108:Warm, comfortable hotel with friendly staff ably led by Beth. A great choice of breakfasts plus reasonably priced, well prepared, meals. Our group will book again next year in this not too expensive hotel.
Review 109:window catch was broken so the window didnt close properly, hence noisy by the road.
Review 110:helpful hotel staff friendly bar staff good wi-fi log fires relaxed feeling very good breakfast
Review 111:Some basic maintenance needed in bathroom.
Review 112:Beer excellent. Very good menu, reasonably priced and good quality. Very pleasant staff and comfortable accommodation. Excellent 'outside' area to sit and drink/smoke/eat.
Review 113:the rooms are comfy clean and cosy but not luxurious and this is not a criticism just getting your expectation realistic I had to leave
Review 114:excellent quiet location low and high level walks very close clean comfy rooms good pub food tim taylors, loweswater ales friendly efficient staff whom I would like to thank good value for money even the weather was great
Review 115:Dinner was excellent although no parmesan cheese was offered with the pasta dish. When asked for it took 15 mins to arrive and came in slices not ground. Bar drinks and atmosphere great.
Review 116:For a future visit we would ask for a room not overlooking the road as the noise was invasive unless the window was firmly closed.
Review 117:Garden and flower pots and residents lounge.
Review 118:It's a bit remote so if you're looking for access to a town for a drink or some food, you may have to allocate a designated driver.
Review 119:Peace & quiet Food & Drink Comfortable Rooms Great views Access to rural areas Open roads (We were on a motorcycle weekend).
Review 120:Hotel is very isolated and therefore has no phone signal. This is however common in the area. Popularity of the restraunt ment reserved tables , and as a resident , we had to sit outside
Review 121:Arrived and checked in without problems. Shown to room and found to be good quality and very clean. Nice bar serving cask ales and good food menu. Quiet location resuled in a good night sleep
Review 122:There is no lock on the outer door of the building where most of the guests' rooms are. During our second night we were disturbed by a couple who had walked in and who knocked at each room asking if there was anyone they could speak to about booking a room. It was 5 a.m.
Review 123:Excellent welcome at the bar. very good food. extremely polite, cheerful and helpful staff - except for the manageress, who was abrupt, grumpy, and gave the impression that guests were a major inconvenience to her. One instance (of several); having told guests that breakfast was from 8.00 till 10.00, she was complaining loudly that some were appearing at five to ten!
Review 124:Minor problem but the room was on the small side so the tea and coffee facilities in the room were difficult to use (room 7) Would have been nice to have hot chocolate as an option too.
Review 125:The Staff were very welcoming and helpful. The food was excellent. I am a vegetarian who hates goats cheese and rarely have much chose (goats cheese normally dominates all menus) Here I had a good chose and the vegetarian options were some of the best I've had anywhere. Well done. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider returning especially as there are still good walks close by not done!
Review 126:Staff didn't have a clue, organised chaos.Small room even though told we were in superior room. Had to ask for everything we needed in dining room especially breakfast . Waited 20 mins then we had to ask for tea and coffee , nothing replenished on buffet table i.e orange juice and bread(to make own toast). No chance of having leisurely lie in as the staff communicated with each other by shouting !!! Walls like paper in each room and felt like people next door we're getting in bed with us every time they moved. Would definitely not stay here again and was far to expensive room tariff.
Review 127:Location
Review 128:Wi-Fi very weak
Review 129:Comfortable bed and very clean Warm and friendly welcome Excellent staff who couldn't do enough for us even though there was a big family party on Lovely location, great for walking Excellent breakfast We had mussels for lunch - brilliant
Review 130:The place is set in very beautiful country side very easy to find the staff were very welcoming and friendly really enjoyed are stay and would definitely stay there again
Review 131:Nothing really.
Review 132:Nice old pub, ideally situated to explore the western lake district.
