Reviews for The Red Lion, Stretham

Review 1:Untrustworthy

Review 2:It would have been an excellent visit but I was over charged for the room. The room price was £90 and I over paid by £ 90. I expected a refund but nothing has come. So a untrustworthy establishment

Review 3:BED SQUEAKY AND NEW MATTRESS WOULD BE GOOD.

Review 4:COMFY,CLEAN AND PLEASANT ROOM. VERY EASY WITH A DOG AS THERE IS A FRENCH DOOR TO THE CAR PARK AND GARDEN. STAFF FRIENDLY AND OBLIGING. NICE ATMOSPHERE IN THE BAR AND GOOD FRESH FOOD SERVED. NOT FAR TO CAMBRIDGE OR ELY. QUIET ROOM TOO. WE ENJOYED OUR STAY AND WILL DEFINITELY RETURN.

Review 5:The walls in the rooms were so thin that I could here EVERYTHING the guy next door to me did (or didn't do) No wifi in rooms, dust everywhere in the rooms and spiders webs behind my bed. The final straw was no hot water in the morning.I have travelled for years and stayed in many places, but this place takes first prize for being my worst stay ever, anywhere!

Review 6:Absolutely nothing

Review 7:I'm not a dog lover and this is a dog friendly hotel . Whilst having dinner two dogs were roaming around the dinning area and one jumped on me whilst eating . The owner appologised but I did expect a free drink r something to recognise my dinner had been disturbed .

Review 8:The staff were really friendly and helpful , and the food was delicious ..really really good .

Review 9:No hot water in the morning as the valve in laundry romm had been knocked?

Review 10:Food good & when there was an issue they were prompt with a solution and fair

Review 11:Friendly ,helpful ,food :) 10/10 all Freshly cooked wide choice for all 3 courses able to see cooking area very clean neat tidy no closed doors open plan as you walked though bar area to rooms .

Review 12:One or two little noggles, not serious enough to mention here. But then no B&B we have stayed at has been perfect.

Review 13:Nicely decorated and comfortable room. Very good breakfast.

Review 14:Nothing

Review 15:The staff were amazingly friendly. We were made so welcome and our dog was made a fuss off by everyone. The room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed.

Review 16:The weather had changed to a more cooler period, but we decided not to blame the staff.

Review 17:The room was warm and cosy. The accommodation was well placed for visiting the city of Cambridge, and wildlife and national trust places.

Review 18:We needed somewhere near to where our daughter was living and she found the Red lion for us,it was perfect for our 4 day stay and also to bring the family to have meals with us,what more could you want.

Review 19:I didn't like the fact that when one of our large party paid quietly for our Sunday lunch (for 15 people), the staff didn't tell us about this but were set to charge us again! Fortunately one of the group knew the bill had already been settled.

Review 20:Staff were very accommodating with our special requests.

Review 21:The location of the premises is beautiful and the rooms are lovely and clean. very lovely staff and this is our 2nd vsit. Breakfast was included which was excellent. Definitely recommend the Red Lion to anyone!

Review 22:Too much noise near the room - freezers, generators or something off and on through the night, then on continuously from about 5am. Also the duvet was quite narrow (single bed) and didn't offer much comfort.

Review 23:A 2 day stay spoilt by a noisy piece of cellar cooling equipment which is working 24/7 and made it impossible to have a decent nights sleep.

Review 24:The location

Review 25:If you have the ground floor rooms by the garden,...change them! The windows were rotten and so thin that it was as though you had a room full of drunken teenagers, although they went at midnight. Breakfast staff grumpy and food mediocre, woe betide you if you ask for a second cup of tea, like asking for them to donate a kidney!?

Review 26:The room was fairly modern and clean, as was the bed and bathroom.

Review 27:Being woken at 6.15 by the beer delivery and barrels being rolled past our bedroom window and banged against the wall! Breakfast was on a rotation basis which needed to be booked the night before, a little to formal for my liking. The breakfast itself was excellent.

Review 28:Great quiet location, staff very friendly and helpful.

Review 29:Loo wouldn't flush. Door wouldn't close. No loo roll. Bed too hard. Very run down property. The restaurant and the food was very poor. SORRY.

Review 30:Lovely little place, rooms were a really good size, perfectly clean and the bed was sooooo comfy! Breakfast was delicious and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Only stayed one night but I would stay there again if going over that way.

Review 31:Cooked breakfast greasy. Toast already buttered. No white bread.Window & blind cleaners working during our breakfast.

Review 32:Pleasant old village pub, Bus stops outside for Ely or Cambridge hourly. Sky Sports shown in bar ( depending on locals preference !) Village convenience store opposite. Free Wifi good. Small, well kept garden/ terrace area. Continental breakfast good.

Review 33:No hairdryer in room had to ask, light not working in bathroom on arrival, fly's in room, bed lumpy, fans blowing all day and night making the room very noisy, window had to be wedged open as the sash was broken

Review 34:the staff are excellent, they can't do enough for you however some things should just have been done before we arrived

Review 35:It was a very hot weekend when I stayed with my family. my room had a ceiling fan but my son and young grandson did not have one in their room and a portable one was not was available- it meant very uncomfortable nights

Review 36:Rooms were spacious and beds very comfortable, staff were friendly and food OK

Review 37:Service wasn't either efficient or friendly on the whole. No choice of bread at breakfast, only very thin toast. Lasagne was poor. Just a trickle of water from the cold tap in the wash-basin.

Review 38:The food was good, especially the fresh fruit at breakfast, but also the evening meals. Position of hotel was convenient and there was ample car parking. Katie, one of the waitresses was extremely good.

Review 39:I couldn't sleep because of music in bar until early hours and then a church clock ringing every quarter of an hour!

Review 40:Bed was comfortable. Keen price

Review 41:Poor room sound insulation - woken each morning by early risers We had ground level room and yet the windows had only curtains no blinds/nets so people walking on path outside could see into the room. Failure to service room after day 1. Toilet did not correctly flush - reported at once but not done Uncomfortable bed - the springs could be felt when laying down. We invited two friends for a meal - it was very poorly cooked (I am retired chef) and we complained but were still charged for the lasagne (inedible) and no allowance made for dishes that were undersized (3 ordered the same yet two were much smaller than the third). We were informed that the resident chef had been suspended and a temporary chef installed. We were told the resident managers were away on holiday and possibly the business was being sold maybe this accounted for some of the problems we had.

Review 42:Plenty of car parking pleasant small gardens Breakfast was good with plenty of choices Pleasant staff Nice village

Review 43:Not really a criticism more advice which will ensure excellent futureratings. We had Room 9 which had a wet room en-suite presumably fordisabled guests. This area needs better floor drainage and a longershower curtain plus more ventilation to avoid a premanently wet floorand to eliminate mould growth on the tile grouting.

Review 44:A lovely, atmospheric, old world inn right in the centre of a villagebetween Ely and Cambridge. Great free breakfast (despite the web sitesaying it is not included) and lovely evening meals. Child-friendlystaff who were very helpful and attentive. Many thanks --- recommended

Review 45:If I had something I was disappointed about it would be the bed was a very small double, when I booked it said king size

Review 46:Lovely warm welcome, very helpful friendly staff. The room was spacious and very clean with beautiful bed linen. Great way to start the day with a varied choice at breakfast.

Review 47:Useless Wi-Fi in room Breakfast not well organised Coffee already with milk in arrived, never asked what sort I wanted Piles of unwanted toast

Review 48:Friendly staff. Generally comfortable

Review 49:Lovely, very clean place and very friendly, professional staff! Very comfortable bed, in fact I slept better there than I do at home. Would definitely return there as excellent value for money.

Review 50:Extremely clean, comfortable, friendly pub , great polite staff who were extremely helpful. Would certainly recomend. The breakfast was great and the choice of evening meals acceptable. We had a great stay.

Review 51:The staff were very friendly and accomodating. Including the pub dog. If you are looking for the authentic pub/inn experience this is the place. Quiet area, clean and great food. Great value for money. Ideally located between Ely and Cambridge and is perfect for the day tripper.

Review 52:The room I was in, (8) did have a faint peculiar smell when you first entered, and the extract ducts (from the kitchen?) where on the wall outside, so they could be heard when they were switched on.

Review 53:The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was good, and it was a clean and tidy. A small, comfortable room with good facilities. Overall a pleasant stay in a in a quiet village. Would stay again.

Review 54:Sash window in bedroom difficult to move but it did not affect my nights rest. This is and old character coaching inn and I was not expecting a plush interior.

Review 55:The Inn is a fine old building fashioned for the traveller. The staff were very helpful and the room clean and spacious. Tea and coffee making inthe room available.

Review 56:The Live music ! We were in room four - above the pub. When one stays above a pub you expect some noise but I had booked this specifically for some where quiet. Ok the music stopped at midnight but it did spoil our stay. The new owners explained that they were going to cease with the live music in June 2015. Don't get room 4. All you hear all night is the cellar cooler switching on and off !!

Review 57:It was a lovely place to stay. People, Food Breakfast, lovely buzzing local pub. Bedroom was ok - nothing fantastic but clean, warm and functional. Perhaps stay in the outside extension rather than in the main pub building itself.

Review 58:The church clock chimeing through the night. The duvet was to thin and we were cold. But the hotel changed for our second night.

Review 59:The location, and the pretty village and serounding area

Review 60:Could have been cleaner, comfier, quieter and warmer. And why do places have to use powdered egg for scrambled egg. It's not the same as "real" eggs must on save pence and minutes in the prep, but for way poorer result.

Review 61:Cauliflower Mornay and the slow cooked pork. Really tasty.

Review 62:Could do with a little T L C.

Review 63:Was Value for money. Clean. Staff we came across on our visit couldn't have been more HELPFUL. Great location for us near relatives. Would have stayed an extra night unable to because they were full.

Review 64:great menu choices - including a good choice for vegetarians. staff and warm and friendly rooms clean - tidy - well decorated and great value for money.

Review 65:There was a disco the night we arrived which went on until midnight in the Conservatory just opposite our room. Guests sat outside to smoke in the Courtyard underneath our room & people came & went until 1 am.

Review 66:The food was quite good with a varied menu. The Staff were friendly, polite & helpful.

Review 67:Excellent freshly cooked full English breakfast. Very peaceful location. Excellent location for fen walking and visits to Ely and Cambridge. Good pub food in the evening.

Review 68:Avoid room 8 ! Too much noise from heating system and kitchen fan. You won't sleep ! After 5 minutes still no warm water in the shower. Food little choice and quality so so ...

Review 69:Nothing at all

Review 70:Room was comfortable and clean and considering the weather was very cold it was also very warm. The member of staff(Toby) who checked us in, also served breakfast the next day and checked us out. He was polite, friendly courteous and helpful.

Review 71:Food, very little choice, very poor quality. I would not stay here again unless the standard of food improved.

Review 72:Wi fi, staff were friendly and apologetic about the food

Review 73:My own fault, but my room was right above the bar and I had an early start...bit noisy. Will ask for a room nearer the car park next time.

Review 74:Bed was great, staff friendly and free parking. Food was good too.

Review 75:Limited menu, specials board had only one item. Duvet had a split down one side with filling coming out.

Review 76:Well kept cellar with good beer Food was good.

Review 77:Our room was not serviced during our 3 night stay. As it was a village pub, when we got back at 11pm it was disconcerting to find an unmade bed, dirty teacups, wet towels on the bathroom floor, and no-one on duty.

Review 78:The village location was lovely, handy for Ely. The food was freshly cooked and tasty.

Review 79:We tried to have an evening meal witch was not for human consumtion chili con carni that was still frozen when delivered to the table, pasta that was not cooked . refused to eat the rest.

Review 80:the last glass of scotch. and packing for the next place for stay.

Review 81:The noise of a large industrial fan going all night which kept me awake for a large part of the night!

Review 82:The room was nicely set out, clean & cozy. Staffs were very welcoming.

Review 83:wifi a bit slow but this was not a big issue for us.

Review 84:We were made very welcome, as was our dog Marilyn. She was very much at home, relaxing under a table in the friendly public bar. We had a good bar meal on arrival, well cooked and presented. No silly frills or fripperies, just good value tasty home cooked food. The breakfast was WONDERFUL. Our room was clean, comfortable, warm and cosy. The bed was a little soggy for our taste, but that's just personal preference.

Review 85:The staff were very friendly. The food was excellent

Review 86:Boiler had failed and so no hot water at all. However they reduced the bill to compensate so overall not a bad place.

Review 87:Excellent food

Review 88:Old style inn with rooms serving excellent beer and good variety of food. Unpretentious but well delivered.

Review 89:excellent breakfast, and good selection of drinks

Review 90:Lovely staff, made us feel very much at home.

Review 91:Friendly and welcoming,comfortable large room.good breakfast,

Review 92:A village pub that is obviously well supported by the locals, this creates a friendly atmosphere and welcoming helpful staff.

Review 93:Staff friendly Clean and tidy Very good breakfast

Review 94:The bed wasn't very comfortable - it was like we were sleeping on a bed of water

Review 95:The friendliness of the staff and the nice breakfast

Review 96:Friendly staff. Lovely room. Good food. Happy to switch pillows due to feather allergy.

Review 97:No hot water in shower Wi fi not in room

Review 98:Food and staff

Review 99:It was a lovely pub in a quaint little village - manageress was a very nice lady and staff were superb!

Review 100:rooms are a bit tired

Review 101:the staff were great & the food value for money.

Review 102:Out of WiFi range in the back rooms.

Review 103:Good Food

Review 104:No problems we enjoyed our stay

Review 105:It was perfect for what we required.

Review 106:The room was very spacious and clean.

Review 107:The gaps in the windows and external door

Review 108:Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful without overdoing it. Cosy room and enjoyable shower

Review 109:Only window opened onto beer garden which smelled of chips and fags

Review 110:Didn't charge extra for taking my border terrier

Review 111:Rooms were very nice, plenty of tea/coffee etc

Review 112:the room we had was very noisy as we were above the pub

Review 113:food was very nice

Review 114:Friendliness of staff. Very comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. Excellent breakfast.
