Reviews for The Golden Pheasant Hotel

Review 1:Greeting at reception was not particularly warm or welcoming. Bar and dining room lacked character with no fire given the time of year.

Review 2:Lovely location in Burford which is a beautiful village. Comfy beds and quiet room

Review 3:– There was an insufficient supply of hot water; – There was no wi-fi in the room (only in shared areas of the Inn); – The mattress was much too soft; – There was no proper four-poster bed as advertised (pictures on the website did not match this particular room); – The reception was not manned for about five minutes, and the receptionist who eventually showed up was not overly enthusiastic.

Review 4:– Location and general ambience; – breakfast.

Review 5:We were shown photos of a room, including a fourposter bed, sofa and table, which we did not have, so the information was misleading. The mattress was too soft and clearly old. It sagged and I awoke several times with backache. There was a fire escape sign just above eye level on the wall which made it impossible to sleep until we had covered it up completely. It was a nice room but not enough accurate attention to detail for the price. My salmon meal was delicious but I had to send it back to be properly cooked.

Review 6:Being in the centre of Burford at Christmas time and within reach of lovely walks. Easy to park. Room comfortable.Breakfast tasty.

Review 7:Not a bad experience, but some points - bathroom sink too small, no shelf in the bathroom for toiletries, and no shelf in the shower for shampoo/ shower gels. Carpet lifting at bathroom door, needs fixing before whole thing becomes a trip hazard. Needed to seek staff help in adjusting central heating radiator.

Review 8:Comfortable bed.

Review 9:As it is a very old building there was some road noise in the early hours in the front rooms (there are plenty of rooms towards the back of the hotel...). Also creaky floorboards could be an issue but this is the price for a lovely, classy old building

Review 10:Hotel seemed nice and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Very, very nice building. Great breakfast.

Review 11:Perfect location, comfortable room and a good breakfast. Visiting relatives so couldn't rate staff as checked in late and checked out early the one member of staff we saw was good.

Review 12:No wifi although they said there was and you got spicy sausage included in your full English breakfast that wasn't to my liking but that's a personal. Preference toast was cold and not toasted. Properly ie was pure whitr

Review 13:Comfy rooms good showers

Review 14:The shower didn't work properly - no pressure and not very hot The room was noisy as right by the road and no double glazing

Review 15:The food was really nice

Review 16:Our room was extremely small with no room to do anything. The bathroom was what I can only describe as disgusting. It smelt of drains and there was no window or even a vent. The window in the room was tiny so couldn't even air it properly. We paid the same as our friends who had a room almost double the size and there was no smell etc. The bed was very small and uncomfortable.

Review 17:The location of the hotel was perfect although there was barely any parking space and had to park on the main road. We had to keep moving out car to avoid parking tickets.

Review 18:Room had unpleasant odour on arrival but there wetre workmen outside - had they dug up the drains?

Review 19:Food was very good value and breakfast staff particularly helpful

Review 20:Poor internet connection in bedrooms but ok down in the pub and lounge areas. Tiny carpark in the back.

Review 21:Dunlin room at the top was the most beautiful room I've ever stayed in! The residents lounge in the back of the pub is cozy.

Review 22:There was a funny smell in the corridor and the 2nd room we had for my partners mum. When we arrived all booked under my name - 2 adults in one and 1 adult in another, the room with 1 adult was given a room much much bigger so we swapped between us but this didn't make any sense from hotel point of view and also there was a big differently when in the rooms although the cost was the same!! Water pressure quite low in shower

Review 23:Nice little pub although didn't get a chance to use it Beds comfortable

Review 24:Excellent location in the middle of Burford, facilities were just what we needed in our particular style of holiday, staff were friendly, informative and entertaining, and food (both the breakfast, and the evening meals when we ate in) was excellent and something to look forward to.

Review 25:The mattress of the bed was in need of replacing, very soft and we ended up in the middle in a dip.

Review 26:Outstanding food, and a lovely bar/eating area, great breakfasts. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 27:There was not enough off road parking and the rooms were not worth the money we paid.We paid less money for a far better room in Melksham the night before.

Review 28:The location and atmosphere was good and the staff were helpful and polite.

Review 29:poor lighting in the rooms and very low water pressure

Review 30:very friendly and helpful staff we were made to feel welcome. Good value for money evening meals.

Review 31:no heating in room until we asked for a radiator dribbling shower lack of parking

Review 32:locality; restaurant menu staff; adequate room size(even if a little tired in decor - curtain literally hanging by a thread!)

Review 33:Not a very personable landlord, bordering on rude. Lumpy mattress and lots of road noise. Was told it was policy to take payment up front, and that this was common practice these days. I use hotels a lot with work/leisure and expected a 'swipe' of my card to be taken on arrival, with payment being taken on checkout. Not possible on Mastercard was the reply. I stayed at the Hilton in Lincoln only 8 days previously and they seemed to manage it alright!

Review 34:Breakfast was good

Review 35:They don't warn you to book in advance for a taxi if you travel outside of the town and laughed at us when we weren't aware. They did however help us book a taxi but we felt t was way overpriced.

Review 36:Pretty location and lovely garden

Review 37:Car Park a little small. Room overlooked the main street and was a little noisy early morning.

Review 38:Room clean and tidy. Breakfast was excellent and also the evening meal,

Review 39:Used toiletries in bathroom. Radiators not working-told management but no one sorted it out. Dirty and creased bedding. Bedside table lamp broken. Hand basin waste dirty. One cup had tea stains in. Not of the staff had any kind of uniform. No one ever at the reception desk to help. Had to pay on arrival!

Review 40:The staff were very polite and nothing was too much trouble. The room was fabulous and the breakfast wonderful. The service was spot on. I even left a top in the room which they sent to me foc. Will definitely visit again. Thank you.

Review 41:The location of the room was 311 and was in the courtyard. When we opened the vent as the room got too hot there was young locals having a drink and talking which was a bit of a pain when we were trying to sleep. The towel and bedding was clean but had dark stains on them which wasn't great. The draws had hairs in them but we didn't use them it was an observation. Overall we would return but feel £75 a night is a bit steep for what's on offer I would rate it more the £60-£65 mark is more than enough.

Review 42:The breakfast was amazing I had the full English and my boyfriend had the vegetable patch option for vegetarians which he really enjoyed and he is quiet fussy with food. The location is amazing as it is in the heart of the lovely town. The room was pleasant and spacious however...

Review 43:Our room was on the roadside and it was almost impossible to get any sleep during our stay. The passing traffic was SO noisy! Even with the windows shut (Which meant the room was hot) it still didnt really help. If you we're in a room away from the main road then this place would be a little gem.

Review 44:The breakfast was brilliant and the locations is ideal for Burford.

Review 45:just a few little minor things which make a huge difference between being ok and excellent like top of chest of drawers where tea /coffee kept had ring marks on it, curtain tie backs untidy and dead fly on windowsill

Review 46:staff friendly and very helpful. bed very comfortable quiet room inspite of being in a pub!. Excellent location for exploring Burford , and breakfast the best I've had for a long time

Review 47:Our room was an outside one off the car park. Windows not double glazed so prepare for an early wake up call with deliveries etc. Shower was terrible, very weak and takes ages for hot water to come through.

Review 48:Overall location is great. Good price.

Review 49:Room musty with thick dust on top of the wardrobe, which fell on your face when you took your holdall off it. Thick dust under the beds and chest of draws. Room lighting bad. No extractor fan in toilet so if there were any nasty smells they permeated into the room, not nice. The toilet flush broke, repaired same day. No cold water coming through the shower, so you burnt alive in it. Still the same after reporting it. Toilet seat in public toilet downstairs balanced on top of toilet, not a screw in sight and the cleaners had literally just come out of there so they must have known about it. Reported and fixed same day. The other toilet flush was broken, reported and fixed. Atmosphere not good, staff didn't really speak to you unless you spoke to them. Air conditioning unit right outside room window coming on and off all night. Watched food delivery early in the morning delivered right under the window.

Review 50:Breakfast very good and evening meal although prices for evening meal very expensive.

Review 51:Parking was supposed to be included. However in practice it wasn't which meant I had to find a place to park in the public streets outside. They did not respond to two emails requesting information about the parking before I arrived. The problem seems to have been caused by i) building work taking place there so the builders took all the parking spots ii) the parking spots are limited in any case. This makes their advertising inaccurate or misleading.

Review 52:Breakfast was excellent.

Review 53:You're right above a loud drinkers' pub here. It is loud until about midnight.

Review 54:We stayed in the big room. Was very nice, very spacious and comfy. Parking out back was useful.

Review 55:Cleanliness wasn't too great lots of dead bugs on the carpet and a massive spiders web above the bath. Also we weren't aware that the room contained a fire exit so there was a constant light on which wasn't great. We requested a cot but didn't receive it however in the end this wasn't necessary but would recommend speaking directly to the hotel if you do have special requirements as they are extremely helpful.

Review 56:The staff were incredible and couldn't have been more helpful and kind.

Review 57:Just a niggle..... We stayed in 'avocet' - a lovely room but would have been even bettter if the missing curtain hooks were replaced and more than a trickle of hot water could be coaxed out of the bathroom basin taps

Review 58:Lovely, clean, atmospheric old coaching inn. Great location, friendly staff, good breakfast.

Review 59:Car parking very restricted. Cost me a parking ticket from local jobs worth.

Review 60:Love the location in the centre of Burford. Four poster rooms are great, loads of room.

Review 61:We had a room on the street & were kept awake by lorries trundling through the village all through the night. Not the fault of the Hotel of course.

Review 62:The very central location. We had dinner there with friends & the food was excellent. Unfortunately we ate so much that we had to miss out on breakfast (although it looked very good).

Review 63:Room was overlooking the main road, so it was very noisy even in the dead of night, but don't let that put you off.

Review 64:Staff were very friendly, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. My room was very comfortable and clean.

Review 65:Bathroom extractor fan didn't work so bathroom and bedroom were very hot and had to leave window open to allow steam etc out of bathroom. did mention it but no action taken whilst we were there.owner was sat at the bar most times when we were around. also under the bed hadn't seen a hoover for quite some time, we also found a previous owners gold earing under the bed, which if cleaned properly would have been found.

Review 66:breakfast and the 2 for 1 meals were excellent.

Review 67:We had 2 nights booked and left after the first.....they had builders in - even though I had called a few days before they did not inform us. We had to endure paint fumes through breakfast and a builder walking in to our bedroom @ 6am. Drilling & hammering @ 7am. The bar was not open so we had to go elsewhere to get a dink. The Manager was very unsympathetic.

Review 68:Location

Review 69:The location, in the middle of the lovely Burford High Street, is a winner. A few tables at the front for a drink on a warm day are an attraction. The cooked breakfast was substantial and delicious.

Review 70:no chair in the room although the lounge downstairs was very comfortable. Parking a nightmare. Workers vans there until 4.45 and then when we tried to move car from freepark, laundry van blocking access for 30 minutes. Ended up carrying case from free carpark

Review 71:Comfortable bed and very nice sheets. Location Breakfast included in overall price and very good

Review 72:We booked for 2 nights and were surprised to find that no one cleaned our bathroom during our stay.

Review 73:We were comfortable and our room was incredibly good value for a town like Burford.

Review 74:Advertises parking but couldn't get even close. Room was cramped for the price. not al all friendly welcome and not helpful about parking or booking dinner. Seemingly over-reliant on location, thinking that will forgive anything.

Review 75:Great location in heart of Burford.

Review 76:The shower was quite weak and took a while to get any hot water. WiFi is only available in public areas so no chance of catching up on Netflix in bed. Double bed was too small for two people, usually get bigger.

Review 77:Great location, excellent breakfast, friendly helpful staff, nice room which was clean and smartly decorated, overall a good stay.

Review 78:Very expensive for just a pub with bedrooms. I can book a first class hotel in Bournemouth, including a six course dinner, for only £14 more. Decor of bedroom rather dated. Lack of en suite facility inconvenient

Review 79:Excellent breakfast

Review 80:The mattress could do with updating. It sagged into the middle.

Review 81:A fantastic location and building! The staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was exceptional.

Review 82:Noise element as we were in a courtyard room. Room small no comfortable chair Bathroom very dark - depressing

Review 83:Location very good. Breakfast very good

Review 84:Courtyard room poorly renovated. Cheap materials, indifferent workmanship especially amateurish tiling and sealing.. Lack of mains plugs. Extension leads provided just not good enough!

Review 85:Location, bar. Clean room

Review 86:The only thing about the hotel that could be improved was the shower was very small. Other than that if you are planning to use taxis during your stay be aware that the prices are extortionate.

Review 87:The best thing about our stay was the lovey breakfast in the morning. It was very substantial and would set you up for a day of touring.

Review 88:Bathroom was a bit dated, minimalist bedroom, but functional.

Review 89:Convenient location in town, easy to find. Very comfortable, modern bar /breakfast area, with sunny courtyard. Good locally sourced breakfast.

Review 90:Miserable owner..not customer facing at all..

Review 91:Not much really..Burford is a nice place and that's the saving grace together with the helpful and cheerful morning blonde lady, there is nothing else outstanding about this place.

Review 92:Bedroom on ground floor with outside door, located in converted outhouses, at back of pub, with noisy beer garden and carpark directly outside. Only ventilation a small, louvred window opening onto carpark. Music and singing from pub went on late.

Review 93:Good breakfast served by very pleasant and obliging waitress.

Review 94:the hotel started building work at 7am with a generator going on from 7am directly below our window. the dining area was next to the bar area which was being worked on and a plastic sheet between the rooms which consequently smelt damp and dusty and very off putting to eat breakfast - it was ridiculous - they should not have taken in guests on the sunday night. neither did anyone at any time apologise, especially at breakfast. would not go back and have told all of my friends - rude and unhelpful staff

Review 95:nice room clean good location with parking cheap

Review 96:We were told to come back in 2 hours when the room would be ready, and when we came back (4 hrs later) it was a total mess.. .bit annoying to have to wait another hour but everyone was lovely and apologised for the mix up so it wasn't a problem!

Review 97:Staff, location, facilities

Review 98:Unfriendly and uninterested staff from check-in on. You don't feel welcome and they give a feeling as if you're too much. Not saying hello at arrival, not saying goodbye when you leave. No single reason to come back and to find another place to stay. Becaus the unfriendliness other things such as bad beds, low ceilings, low water pressure, enormous heat under the roof count more and more.... Nit a single enquiry if we slept well (becaus of heat) or apologies that they couldnt do anything about it. Absolutely nit interested at all! Maybe they are stressed because of refurbishment? Conclusion: go and find an other hotel.

Review 99:Location in the middle of Beaufiful Burford.

Review 100:Being asked to pay upfront - in cash (as their machine was not working!) Decor of the room, state of the bed, cobwebs, toilet that did not flush properly. Attitude of some of the bar staff in the evenings.

Review 101:Burford and surrounding countryside. Breakfast was okay -apart from the 'pretend' mushrooms

Review 102:Staff were lovely but could have been a little more personable. They didn't ask about our stay on check out which we thought was odd.

Review 103:We really liked the breakfast.

Review 104:The door to our room was a bit hard to operate (both the key and the door itself stuck). The tub didn't feel like it was secured to the floor and moved when we showered. The vinyl flooring in the bathroom also wasn't secured down very well. The mattress was springy and not very comfortable, we felt as if we were going to fall off of it.

Review 105:The location was perfect, we did three of the Cotswold walks from our hotel. There are many antique shops and there's live music across the street at The Mermaid. We stayed toward the back of the hotel, not on the High Street, and it was very quiet. The breakfast was amazing and way too much food for us to eat. The staff (esp. Craig) was kind, considerate, full of information, and held our bag at no cost after checkout so we could go on one more walk. The room was adequate size, cute, and clean.

Review 106:4 poster bed was only a 2 poster with an unpainted hardboard head board. Bed mattress was dreadful - far too soft and sagging in the middle impossible to sleep on the sides, ended up on top of each other in the middle. Furniture and curtains scruffy and 2 ceiling lights not working.

Review 107:4 poster room (Avocet)with huge exposed wooden beams and luxurious bath/shower double basin bathroom. Very good full English breakfast.

Review 108:Nothing really just a bit of tlc

Review 109:The staff and location superb all it needs is a bit of tlc breakfast superb scrambled egg a dream bed very comfy would stay again

Review 110:Bathroom facilities left a bit to be desired; exhaust fan did not work, shower fitting was not secure and water temperature difficult to adjust. Drapes needed attention as they were falling apart. Noise from the kitchen directly below the bedroom. Limited parking.

Review 111:Food excellent, helpful staff. Good selection of ales and beers. Lovely courtyard beer garden.

Review 112:No car parking available. Cavernous room in need of a deep clean, not properly serviced between days 1 and 2 of my stay. 5 light bulbs out, trouser press propped against the wall, bedside alarm opposite side of room to bed. Only a half-curtain on one window, hence broad daylight from 5am onwards. Breakfast not served until 8am, no exceptions, packed lunch (sandwich and apple) provided instead. Amateur feel to the whole place. Never again.

Review 113:Proximity to where I needed to be.

Review 114:The room was on a terrible slant. On the second night, the people in the room above had spilt a large volume of water that had seeped through the floor and made it onto our mattress and floor. Whilst the hotel staff were helpful and accommodating, their solution lacked the sort of professionalism I would have expected -- they simply changed our sheets and flipped the mattress over. This meant we were now lying on a horribly uncomfortable surface, with mattress springs poking into us -- and still had a wet floor! A new room was warranted in this situation.

Review 115:The breakfast was reasonable, the location is good. The staff were friendly and approachable, although better suited to pouring beers than running a hotel.

Review 116:Not so keen on having use of a private bathroom prefer ensuite next time. The mattress too soft for us in double room called Goldcrest.

Review 117:Jay Room was perfect as had ensuite and twin beds. Perfect location and excellent breakfast.

Review 118:No parking available as only a very small car park which was full. The bed & room was very small. As the hotel is very old there are sloping ceilings in rooms so if you are tall you may hit your head. Furniture & fittings in rooms dated & worn.

Review 119:The breakfast was lovely, especially the Gloucester Old Spot sausage. They get them from a butcher in Witney.

Review 120:The TV in Avocet room had no sound on ITV only commentary not sure why I tried all options on settings but could not resolve.

Review 121:Staff very welcoming room very roomy and comfortable. Location in the centre if the town with good access to parking. Excellent choices for breakfast very efficient service, we would deffinately highly recommend this hotel and will visit again when in the area

Review 122:Probably the worst shower in the UK. Very, very poor water pressure and cold. I complained & the manager turned the heat up a little & blamed Burford for the water pressure being low. He didn't know we have friends that live locally & theyhave great water pressure. I'd never stay there again because of this drastic attempt to save on cost.

Review 123:The location is good but then there are many other hotels on Burford High Street.

Review 124:Noisy kitchen fan/boiler interrupting sleep. Shower tiling (grey grout on white) was a bit off putting.

Review 125:Excellent food served by friendly staff. Very convenient location and free parking.

Review 126:Unfriendly staff. Paying for our stay the moment we walked in the door . Lumpy bed could feel springs. One bottle of water for a couple . No curtain on one window so bedroom got to bright to early . Dust on beams and light fittings . Bulb out in bathroom fitting .

Review 127:Not much

Review 128:Only negative is that the room was very hot, and due to old style sash window, we couldn't open to let in cool air.

Review 129:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast. Rooms clean and location perfect for us (we were here for a wedding).

Review 130:The shower was just adequate - took ages to get soap out of hair as not powerful enough.

Review 131:Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good.

Review 132:Food not cooked sent back twice Not charged Hard to get in and out of room door kept sticking. No room for toiletries or towels in bathroom

Review 133:Breakfast

Review 134:I booked for the four poster bedroom (and paid for it!) but did not get it. No explanation and as this was to be a surprise we couldn't mention it . The room we had was good but not what we booked.

Review 135:Everyone very pleasant and meals really good

Review 136:We came away to Burford for the weekend to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday and wanted somewhere picturesque and relaxing. We were not disappointed. From the moment we walked in to The Golden Pheasant, until the time we left, the staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. The room we stayed in was perfect for us. It had a Four-Poster Bed, and ample room to move around. The raised bathroom was also a very nice touch. Location wise, The Golden Pheasant is right in the middle of Burford High Street offering easy access to all local amenities and a great starting point for a hike in the beautiful Cotswold countryside. Although there are possibly cheaper places to stay in and around Burford, I would argue that value for money is what we got and when compared to other accomodation in the surrounding area, stood head and shoulders above the rest. We will definitely come back again.

Review 137:Couldn't get onto the wifi at all

Review 138:The building is very oldy worldy with creaking floorboards and old beams. The 4-poster bed and free-standing bath were the icing on the cake!

Review 139:There was a constant mechanical - like aircon or fridge noise. There were no windows that could be opened or aircon in the room. The door kept sticking you had to give it a good old pull to get in or push to get out.

Review 140:Staff were very helpful, the food was served very timely. They were very flexible at breakfast to meet my requirements.

Review 141:Breakfast was not ready at time stated not even set & therefore we had to rush home for a hospital appointment. The room was tatty, cupboards were falling apart, the front door was dragging on the floor and the wife was unable to open or close the door. The meals at night were very poor and we were unable le to eat them, as we do not eat fast food.

Review 142:location, friendly staff

Review 143:Pretty basic for the price, but you won't get much better value for money in Burford.

Review 144:Friendly, helpful staff. Filling breakfast. Quiet despite the central location.
