Reviews for Cotswold Gateway Hotel

Review 1:I had a poor experience in the restaurant at dinner. I spoke to a young woman at the bar when I arrived and then I seemed to become invisible! i waited a long time to be offered a drink and to be given a menu and then to have my order taken. Food was reasonable.

Review 2:The room was excellent - clean and comfortable and a real bargain. Very comfortable bed.

Review 3:The food in the evening was a tad expensive and breakfasts suffered from lacking a choice of a range of fresh fruit.

Review 4:Dogs are free and the room was inexpensive. It was also in a good location for exploring the Cotswolds. Staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 5:During my recent stay, I encountered an emergency situation concerning my elderly mother, who lives nearby, which meant that my movements and timings became subject to change at short notice. The manager and staff were all most sympathetic and kind, going out of their way to meet my need for flexibility. I could not have asked for better service and do not hesitate to recommend this hotel and its staff.

Review 6:Nothing really, the only little niggle was the soap holder in the bathroom was placed such that if you were in the bath you kept catching your arm on it and it hurt! A really lovely place with no negatives.

Review 7:The staff were welcoming and helpful, the room (4 poster) was really spacious and lovely and the red wine choices excellent and the food really really good, location was easy to park and a very short walk to town made it easy to explore.

Review 8:The room was actually much nicer than those in the pictures, seemingly recently updated. (Room 1). Great location as a base to explore the Cotswolds!

Review 9:There was nothing to dislike about this hotel.

Review 10:Enjoyed the stay here. Could not have chosen a better place to stay for a few days in the Burford area. All the staff were friendly and helpful gave the impression to us that they were pleased to have us staying there. We had a couple of evening meals which were very good absolutely no complaints.

Review 11:HAD A FABULOUS STAY. MADE TO FEEL VERY WELCOME BY SUCH FRIENDLY, HELPFUL STAFF. WOULD STAY AGAIN WITHOUT DOUBT. VERY HANDY FOR TOWN AND VERY LOVELY SETTING.

Review 12:Cards to get into the rooms ,no bags for sanitry use . They are not really dislikes But could be looked into ,

Review 13:Very relaxing made to feel very wellcome. Good food plenty of it , nice rooms overhaul a lovely hotel to stay at ,

Review 14:Very small room with tired bed and bedding.

Review 15:The staff were friendly, the new manager was very helpful. The food was excellent and the hotel was warm. The downside is that the rooms are tired and need refurbishing. Well placed hotel for exploring Burford which is lovely.

Review 16:In some areas the hotel looked a bit tired. I gather that a major refurbishment is due to take place

Review 17:Friendly and helpful staff.clean and very comfortable room.excellent food in resturant.

Review 18:I booked this hotel as they had sort of ok price for single rooms and my brother needed a single room. I booked a four poster room for my husband and myself which was a nice room but I think the price was a little expensive for a 3 star hotel. In our room we had no hot water on one evening when I really needed a warm bath after a walk in the cold.

Review 19:I enjoyed mostly the diner on the first evening. It was good value for money. The location was good, walking distance from the town.

Review 20:I had trouble with the wifi. Instructions came up on my iphone to register so I did but it kept cutting out. My partner didn't register and had no trouble at all!

Review 21:Lovely to find a hotel in Burford's main street with a good car park. Very comfortable room, very good breakfast, helpful staff and a really handy location.

Review 22:Rooms need revamping, which I gather is in the process of happening. Staff need a proper uniform. Check that all lights are working.

Review 23:Convenience of location, comfortable lounge and restaurant.

Review 24:The lighting in room 7 was very dim and it was difficult to read by such low lighting

Review 25:Friendly staff, very comfortable room and the food was excellent.

Review 26:Staff is not overly friendly. No smile, strange glancing.

Review 27:Facilities are wonderful, very cosy restaurant/pub, delicious breakfast selection. VERY highly recommended.

Review 28:Room was quite small. Own bathroom but had to go out of room into a lobby and through another door

Review 29:Lovely friendly staff. Excellent food. Very quiet despite being next to main road.

Review 30:The shower was a joke, took ages for hot water to arrive and when it did there was NO power to it at all ! Breakfast was plentiful but not good, mostly overcooked. Noise from through the walls unacceptable in the room. No lift and difficult stairs. Very poor value for money

Review 31:The staff were very helpful. Parking was easy.

Review 32:No bad experience, but the room was a bit small.

Review 33:The location of the hotel was perfect for our purpose! Visiting the town and meeting friends. Excellent breakfast.

Review 34:There was a shower over the bath which was "tired" & needs an upgrade.

Review 35:Good location, in the lovely town of Buford with plenty of parking. Room & amenities were good with average but acceptable food.

Review 36:The sticky tables (probably due to too much cleaning liquid).

Review 37:The Family room with the 3rd bed a little bit separate in a corner (L-shaped room). Good beds. The nice Restaurant / Bar with good food. Good breakfast buffet. The new windows kept the traffic noise outside. Good parking facilities.

Review 38:Went for my husbands birthday, but couldn't sleep due to multiple fire alarms going off throughout night, almost on the hour between midnight and 06:00. No staff came to check on our area's room or try to explain situation during that time so we kept wondering if we should evacuate or not! No apology for inconvenience offered next morning untill we asked at checkout for explaination and still paid usual price for "nights rest" we didn't actually receive. Oily breakfast didn't help our experience either, will not go back.

Review 39:Clean rooms, good parking close to centre of town, warm shower. Nice bar area.

Review 40:The Cotswold Gateway is a lovely hotel and is appropriately named as we flew into Gatwich and drove to the Cotswolds stopping in Oxford for lunch. I chose this hotel in Burford as it was not too far past Oxford. Good choice. It is a beautiful charming hotel. Cozy lobby, lovely breakfast room and lovely dining room and bar. Loved it!!

Review 41:Excellent location for exploring the beautiful Cotswolds. I will definitely be returning to this hotel soon.

Review 42:Lovely clean hotel with friendly very helpful staff.

Review 43:Nothing major but the room was quite small so I felt the price was not justified. Probably a reflection of the popularity of the area

Review 44:Very easy walk into town with plenty of pubs and restaurants.

Review 45:Location might not be great for some people as it's a short drive out of the village, but it was perfect for us.

Review 46:Fantastic hotel. Great food as well!

Review 47:Only that the noise from the busy A 40 has to be muted by closing the double glazed window units. As we were there at a time when the sun did shine the room got a bit warm and needed the window open.

Review 48:Very comfortable bed, plenty of hot water, staff were excellent and very helpful. Evening meal was superb and breakfast likewise. All adding up to a stay that will be repeated at some time in the future.

Review 49:I am 80,wife 92 ,both with cases, but no lift and no offer of help. We were theonly people at the reception! We had a front room(11) which was appallingly noisy all night, heavy traffic, even with window closed. Room was too small for two people ,certainly not worth £83. The door between bedroom and 'lobby' could only be kept open for moving into b athroom by putting cases against it, which in turn blocked the way into the bathroom and made acess to wardrobe impossible. TAKE THAT DOOR OFF,ITS USELESS!!! Put triple-glazing on window. Floors creaked loudly, but maybe youcan make that a character feature. Could find no literaturer about the hotel history.

Review 50:good location virtually in Burford ,lovely bar/lounge area, good parking space, good breakfast and relaxed staff

Review 51:Only road noise, but that was unavoidable due to location, and did not impact negatively on our sleeping !

Review 52:Staff friendly and helpful. Let us check-in early as we were going to a wedding at 1pm. Clean, comfortable and good breakfast !

Review 53:The menu is limited - not enough fish and pasta dishes.

Review 54:I've stayed at the Gateway on several occasions as well as other hotels within a 10 mile radius of Brize Norton. Since my last stay, ownership has changed. There is now someone manning Reception and the staff are very pleasant. Service is dependant on who serves you and some of the younger staff need more training. Having said that the staff are pleasant enough. My main reason for staying at this hotel is location and an early breakfast.

Review 55:Everything very positive

Review 56:We enjoyed our stay as very comfortable room breakfast was fantastic with great choice and the staff were extremly helpful in giving us great directions to moreton in marsh

Review 57:Dinner somewhat expensive which may reflect the area. Also we were woken in the early hours by noise from the room above, caused by very squeaky floorboards, loud voices & television.

Review 58:Good parking, friendly welcome, comfortable bed & well appointed bathroom with good quality toiletries. Not too much noise from the main road outside which we thought might have been a problem. Excellent breakfast with good coffee and fresh strawberries.

Review 59:Nothing.

Review 60:I stayed at the cotswold gateway the night before my wedding with my family and bridesmaids. The place was brilliant, the brought up a lighter breakfast for us with yogurts, waffles and croissants, orange juice tea and coffee. They didn't mind that we had our own prosecco and even gave us ice and a bucket. The staff were soo helpful and made the wedding morning absolutely effortless.

Review 61:I am a Celiac and the kitchen staff were more than happy to advise, recommend and change ingredients as necessary. No such thing as "can't do that"! The attitude of the staff. Very attentive and friendly. The ideal location for a base while exploring the Cotswolds.

Review 62:The fact that I'd only allowed one night stop instead of two!

Review 63:Location in a beautiful village. Perfect shopping nearby! Dinner was great in a lively atmosphere. What I liked most was that I had left something very dear to me in the room without realising it. By the time I reached my next destination I'd received an email from Stewart advising me of this, offering to post it on or to hold it for collection if I was still nearby. I'm eternally grateful for his kindness!

Review 64:Dowdy common interiors Outdated rooms Low shower pressure Some grumpy staff Expensive for what if offers

Review 65:Excellent English breakfast Good car park

Review 66:We didn't use the wifi as there was no password and we felt it was too risky to use. No fan in the bathroom so it quickly fogged up!

Review 67:All the staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The two meals we had were both delicious! Loved the atmosphere of the old building as well. Parking was very convenient too.

Review 68:Couldn't get WiFi connection but this may have been because there is to be a change of ownership and the changeover to new WiFi provider had only recently taken place. Possibly could have been resolved but we didn't pursue it.

Review 69:The staff were excellent and everything was very clean.

Review 70:Staff very helpful and breakfast was very good and well laid out , tasty and kept at a good temperature. My husband who is a vegetarian was offered veggie sausages which was nice. Hotel let us wait in the lobby while we waited for AA as car wouldn't start.

Review 71:room was a little dated, shower temp and pressure was not good, no choice of eggs at breakfast, but to be fair to the hotel, we did not ask for alternative. Felt that cost of the room was expensive for what it was

Review 72:great location for touring the Cotswolds, is right on a busy roundabout, but that wasn't a problem for us and very little traffic noise. All staff we dealt with were very helpful and welcoming, evening meal at the hotel was good but maybe a little overpriced

Review 73:Room was tiny and hot, it was very expensive for services offered, breakfast was poor and it really needs upgrading to justify price and rating

Review 74:Location and able to accommodate pets

Review 75:breakfast cooked and left under heat lamps. If you get there at the start, it's greta later on and the bacons' greasy cardboard

Review 76:Good location, large car park. Room was clean and tidy

Review 77:Maybe breakfast choice could have been a bit more adventurous....both mornings exactly the same! Bedroom lighting made the room very dark.....room 2... But nice and quiet.

Review 78:Good welcome after a horrid wet journey....meal in restaurant great....shame bar was full, as it looked like more atmospheric.

Review 79:All rooms non smoking as they should be! At midnight our ( and everyone elses) fire alarm went off and shock spoiled the night's sleep. In hindsight the only notice to this effect was tucked away amongst other notices at reception. Nothing in the room. Can the new owners of the hotel investigate this omision as some guests appear to be breaking the law and giving the hotel a bad image. Can we have some feed back as it is likely that we'll need a hotel in the area in future

Review 80:Two flights of stairs to the room which was quite small.

Review 81:Easy to locate, onsite parking, close to village amenities. Close to Brize Norton. Anle to get food after 8pm weekday

Review 82:Not value for money. The room was small, with no space for relaxing other than the bed. And the TV wasn't in a good position to view from the bed! For the price I paid there should be better facilities, and the bathroom was of poor standard. Breakfast was only warm, and for the price, I expect fresh food, not a buffet, where the choice was very limited.

Review 83:It was clean, and the staff were relatively friendly.

Review 84:No lift and steep staircase lacking in a banister all the way down the staircase. Being in our 80s I would ask for a downstairs room if we stayed again.

Review 85:Well located hotel with excellent car park. Staff polite, friendly and hard working.

Review 86:Lack of water pressure in shower and mixer taps very worn so hard to move. Quilt on bed, as always with hotels, a winter weight in summer which makes for a very uncomfortably hot night.

Review 87:Good location for visiting The Cotswolds.

Review 88:Room was a bit small barely room to move around but for a one night stay it was ok. Would want more room if staying longer

Review 89:Location was ideal. Very pleasant at check in and they tried to get our room available early for us. Friendly chat at bar at end of evening and a excellent breakfast. good quality and still hot.

Review 90:There are no sockets by any of the mirrors making styling your hair very difficult. Clearly designed by a man! Lighting was very poor too.

Review 91:Lovely hotel, staff are very friendly, great food.

Review 92:Lack of comfortable seating areas other than in the bar! Annex bedroom space very limited. Absence of towel rail in the bathroom but with space to easily install one.

Review 93:Helpful staff.

Review 94:A noisy wedding party disturbed us at 3a.m.

Review 95:Wonderful stay at a hotel where the staff couldn't have been more helpful and the facilities couldn't have been better.

Review 96:The village of Dunford was wonderful to explore. With history to be found on every turn. The beauty of this area is endless, and the care given to maintain this gem is wonderful.

Review 97:Room 22 in annex had water damage and damp on wall.

Review 98:Great staff, made you feel at home and were happy to help with any questions/requests. Free parking, wifi in guest rooms and easy stroll into Burford.

Review 99:Was a warm night but because the room faced the main road, the windows had to be closed to minimise traffic noise at night. Noise carried from rooms above me when people walked around but not a showstopper.

Review 100:Friendliness and efficiency of staff. Good quality food and beverages.

Review 101:Nothing not to like

Review 102:Reception was a good example of, A first impression is a lasting impression, we arrived at 14 45 the reception we got from the Gentleman on duty was brilliant, he gave us advice and really went the extra mile, the breakfast was of a very good quality.

Review 103:Rather noisy because of road. However as a hot night had to sleep with windows open. Awful porage!! .

Review 104:Excellent staff, great service(fan requested for ort 3 rooms plus single sheets and they were waiting for us on arrival!).,super comfy beds, large towels etc.

Review 105:This is an an old hotel requiring major upgrades that is located on a busy traffic roundabout. Double glazing in the bedrooms keeps out traffic noise, but there is no ventilation system so you have to choose between suffocation or traffic noise. Very creaky floorboards and inadequate sound insulation above rooms 8 and 9, and probably above all other first floor rooms, will keep you awake at night if the traffic noise doesn't. Hotel management are aware of theses issues but are waiting on the owners (Wadworths) to invest in upgrades. Until these are completed I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a good nights sleep.

Review 106:Good food and service in the bar.

Review 107:Bedroom very small - bar eating area very dark and quite dingy - food very expensive for plain fare- quite a walk over and down hill into burford

Review 108:Not a lot - breakfast okay

Review 109:Only very small criticism it is quite noisy in the bedroom if window is open because of busy road.

Review 110:We liked everything - it was just what we were looking for and ticked all the boxes! Highly recommend it other than to those who are looking for 'luxury'.

Review 111:Bedroom was very small in the annexe, ok for one night but if staying longer advise you ask for a larger room.

Review 112:Friendly staff, tasty lunch and large buffet breakfast with freshly cooked food. Comfy but small room with bathroom and lots of hot water.

Review 113:Good dinner but problems with charging it to our room - only sorted out after our intervention - I wonder who originally paid for our dinner!.

Review 114:Our room was fine, with a comfortable bed and useful, separate en-suite, albeit small. Much traffic noise if windows opened and no air conditioning - but this was not an issue.

Review 115:Only downside more comfortable pillows would make it even better,

Review 116:Great breakfast & friendly staff. Rooms & bed clean & comfortable. Good value for money.

Review 117:Room was too hot, water pressure too low in shower. Very heavy cigarette smell in non smoking room, obviously not policed.

Review 118:Staff were great. Arrived late just after 11, the duty manager offered to whip up a couple if cheese and ham toasties as the kitchen was long shut. Great guys here.

Review 119:Shower a bit lacking, always a problem in hard water areas. WIFI didn't reach annexe

Review 120:Welcoming and comfortable Room in modern annexe Quiet at back away from A40

Review 121:It is a good all round hotel perfectly situated for Burford and surrounding areas. Slightly old fashioned, but that adds to its charm, and what it lacks in décor more than makes up for in the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food, whether bar or restaurant. It also has the added bonus of having a car park.

Review 122:First room was lovely but there was a lot of noise from the road. We were then moved to a quieter room. Evening menu did not cater for children so ate out in evening in local pubs just a short walk down the hill.

Review 123:Good lcation, friendly, helpful staff, good breakfast, clean spacious room, with a sofa and a coffee table as well as the usual stool and desk. Park with play area just a few minutes walk down hill and turn left very handy.

Review 124:Could have offered more choices for breakfast. Restaurant menu a bit pricey.

Review 125:Very comfortable beds. Friendliness of staff. Free WiFi. Cosy bar area.

Review 126:Beautiful hotel and village, picture perfect. Well located for visiting Oxford and local attractions. On a busy road but be assured you dont hear it in the hotel. We had room 7, very tall 4 poster bed!

Review 127:The bathrooms in the annexe, whilst spotlessly clean and well presented with towels & toiletires, were quite dated. The shower curtain and pole looked a bit precarious and the water pressure was only just usable. This made the nightly rate poor value but was the only thing to let down our experience. Other family members staying in other annexe rooms also complained of extremely small rooms which were hard to move around in. If we'd booked further in advance we would use other Burford hotels for the price.

Review 128:The full english buffet breakfast was extremely well cooked/ supplied and not overly greasy. Staff were attentive to take drinks orders and remove plates etc. The hotel bar was still in use and had a pleasant atmosphere when we returned from our meal for a nightcap. The location was easy to find from the main transport route and only a short stroll to burford high street where we were dining.

Review 129:Nothing. Why people complain is picky.

Review 130:We took our father away for a weekend break to celebrate being 90 years young. He was made very welcome (as always) but more so this time. Stuart the manager always looks after us well and we can't fault the service we receive.

Review 131:There was nothing not to like.

Review 132:The lovely room, the cleanliness, the fantastic food but most of all the extremely friendly and efficient staff. The comments we had previously read about squeaky floorboards were laughable.. what do you expect from a beautiful old building like this ?

Review 133:The Manager welcomed us on our arrival and was extremely friendly and helpful, all staff in restaurant and reception were extremely polite and helpful.

Review 134:mattress was too soft on the side nearest the window. bathroom was basic looking but perfectly fine.

Review 135:lovely size of bedroom and great breakfast with traditionally cooked veggie sausages. Great!

Review 136:Very hot, small and 'tired' room. Bathroom needed refurbishing as did the carpets and other furnishings. Poor value for money. Breakfast adequate but more fresh fruit and less fried things would have been better and better quality bread and preserves.

Review 137:Good location for what we needed

Review 138:The South African assistant manager was surly, unhelpful and just plain rude. They didn't give us a room in the main hotel so we complained. He didn't like that, and stomped off to show us to another room, not bothering to open the door for my wife, or help me with the case. He should change to a job that doesn't require people skills. Maybe something in computers, or as a sharp rep. We tried to book for dinner at 8pm and they said they were busy, and could we do 6.30. we went at 8 and it was one third full. Never again. A dump. But at least the shower worked out of about six of its spray holes.

Review 139:Breakfast
