Reviews for The Red Lion
Review 1:Wine could be better quality
Review 2:Good restaurant, comfortable room, clean bathroom. Great position for the town and pubs and restaurants. Only a short walk from the sea.
Review 3:Shower not that easy to adjust for hot water Extractor fan noise from kitchen annoying on second night
Review 4:Staff and food excellent Towels and bedding great
Review 5:There was a pubic hair on the bedside table
Review 6:The staff were incredibly friendly, food and atmosphere very good room was really big, would definitely return
Review 7:Had problem with shower couldn't get it warm. Did tell them also whilst having breakfast people having a meeting made us feel we shouldn't be there & while we were checking out they came round & couldn't wait for us to leave before pushing past to get their cup of tea Thought them very rude.
Review 8:Staff were friendly & breakfast was good value for money.
Review 9:I thought the staff on arrival could have been more welcoming and actually showed us to our room. At breakfast we were not offered toast, only bread.
Review 10:Central location in Hyth and able to visit surrounding areas on public transport. Bedlinen and towels were of a high standard and very clean.
Review 11:Breakfast begins very late - 08:30 You may need to take this in to consideration if you need to get an early Eurotunnel.
Review 12:Very close to Eurotunnel. Excellent breakfast.
Review 13:Good location for the ferry or tunnel to mainland Europe. Friendly staff and okay food in the pub. Interior of hotel and room clearly needs some attention, but it's all there. Reasonable value for money.
Review 14:Highly satisfied- no problems for me.
Review 15:Nice alternative traditional pub style accommodation near to the channel ports and tunnel. Lovely welcoming staff, good beer and nicely cooked food. No nonsense well priced comfortable place to stay.
Review 16:On arrival, the place was closed. There was no receptionist and we had to pick up our keys in an envelope on an internal windowsill. It only opened when the pub opened at 18.00.
Review 17:The excellent staff who did all that we asked of them
Review 18:Lovely pub/ b&b.Well positioned for exploring Romney Hythe and Dymchurch area. Perfectly adequate room, beautiful restaurant and enjoyable freshly cookwd full English breakfast along with cereals, yoghurt, toast etc. Would return
Review 19:Shower works as it is supposed to, but because it's a historic building, it takes a very long time for the warm water to reach your room, and the stream suffers from inconsistent pressure, also a regulator seems not to be installed to prevent the water from getting hot enough for our personal tastes. Others may think differently and not be bothered.
Review 20:Hythe is perfectly located for access to the Port Lympne Wild Animal Reserve of Aspinall Foundation. Breakfast is exceptionally good! Helpful staff, good attitude, wonderful patio for warm weather partying. Mexican food night was a big treat: home-cooked excellent quality enchiladas, even though we are Californians eating Mexican food at least every week. All the food was great!
Review 21:Lovely staff. Food was excellent. Room exceptionally clean. bed very comfortable but room itself bit basic. Would have liked bar to be open when we got there for a cup of tea at least as didnt open til six so had to go out. But staff were so lovely and food above average so made up for it.
Review 22:Quite noisy, motorbikes and cars coming and going early hours of morning and seemed to be right outside our window?!
Review 23:Staff were helpful on phone before arriving as we got stuck in bad traffic so didn't arrive until late. Arranged to leave a key and a take away breakfast for us as had to leave early for channel tunnel crossing.
Review 24:The accomodation was average but ok for our needs. Sadly we missed breakfast as it did not start until 8:3o too late for us and we did not realise until it was too late to pre-arrange an earlier breskfast.
Review 25:The pub is on a busy road which may be a problem if you are a light sleeper
Review 26:Stopover before early euro tunnel, good affordable option, a personal touch and better value for money than any of the chains, good pub as well where we had our evening meal
Review 27:only downside for us was that we needed an early start but Breakfast was not served until after we left (9 am I think). The staff were lovely and left us a packed breakfast to take with us, but would have expected full breakfast facilities from 7 - 7.30am
Review 28:great hotel. very friendly and accomodating staff. Very clean and comfortable
Review 29:On a main road, could shake hands with passengers on the bus. No double glazing or secondary glazing, holes in windows, very noisy. Street light outside bedroom window with no blackout curtains or blinds. Filthy valance on bed, unable to shut bathroom window, bathroom door hard to shut, basin tap hard to turn on or off, shower head worn out unable to angle upwards.Only one bedside cupboard, Booked in for 4 nights stayed 1 had to pay for 2 nights.
Review 30:Nothing
Review 31:Pub and restaurant shut Sunday early at 6pm far to early last order for food 5.15!!! Very disappointed after long day sightseeing the last you want to do is walking around finding somewhere else to eat.
Review 32:Great food, comfortable room (curtains must be mended off hooks tho) lovely hot shower very comfortable bed. plenty of space to hang clothes and draws.
Review 33:The service. The venue did not look anything like the pictures on the site. Cleanliness and customer service was awful although we did get some money off the bill due to my daughter complaining.
Review 34:Good location very friendly staff. Only problem was having to leave for shuttle at 8-30 which is when they start to serve breakfast. However they dis provide a take away which was fine.
Review 35:Window did not have a catch to lock it and we were located next to a flat roof, which caused us to carry everything valuable around due to lack of security.
Review 36:Lovely Breakfast.
Review 37:Room was so hot and because of overlooking main road could not open windows as traffic loud. Smallest television I have seen in years and generally a tired looking room.
Review 38:We arrived at 9.45 pm to discover no one in reception, or in the hotel, and the key to our room left in an envelope on the window sill. The room was clean but shabby, hot and very noisy.
Review 39:It was clean and the cooked breakfast was good
Review 40:That was no one there to greet you if you arrive after 3 o'clock. There wasn,t any fresh fruit at breakfast Our room was over the smoking area and the noise from the extraction fan units outside made it hard to sleep sometimes.
Review 41:The staff were pleasent at breakfast the room was clean and bigger than what i was expecting
Review 42:We arrived late but could still get a meal. The staff were really helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Would definitely stay again.
Review 43:Arrived at 4.00pm Hotel closed 3-6pm so could not check in. Quite dated
Review 44:Handy for our visit, good sized room, breakfast served exactly on time requested.
Review 45:The fact that breakfast wasn't served until 8.30am which was not very helpful when we were booked onto the 8.20am euro tunnel train. The option of a packed breakfast or lunch was given and we decided on a lunch. This turned out to be very poor and I don't imagine a breakfast would have been any better. As a result of our experience whilst in France we cancelled our return reservation and stayed elsewhere.
Review 46:Not very much at all
Review 47:We were surprised that the room was not serviced on Friday morning, where it was on Saturday ?? The girl doing the breakfast on Sunday, was not up to the same standard as we had, had the previous two mornings Free WiFi didn't work on our Ipad at all, in fact it couldn't even find it, from the room ??
Review 48:Ali was great and so helpful, as was Callum's Mum on Saturday morning
Review 49:The opening hours of the bar could be better we had a meet with friends and had to go to another pub that was open.
Review 50:The food was home cooked, big portions and excellent.
Review 51:Lack of staff! No one there to greet you Breakfast! Youghart not on ice were horrid & warm. Milk & orange warm. & what i can make out we had cleanin staff serving us. Sitting enjoying the cooked breakfast when we had members of u3a keep trundling through the breakfast room. And overheard them all talking about us being in the room they were supposed to be in for there meeting. This made us feel very pushed to finish our breakfast. I found this very very rude .
Review 52:Lovely clean rooms with plenty of room
Review 53:Facilities: 1. Although advertised as having parking, there was actually no on-site parking available due to inconsiderate parking of others and a car park which was just not big enough. We ended up parking quite a long way up the street. 2. The window in the room was single-paned and did not close fully so it was quite chilly and noisy from the very busy main road outside. A king sized quilt on the double bed would have helped keep the draught out whilst in bed! 3. The TV in the room was very small.
Review 54:The staff were friendly and welcoming and served a lovely breakfast. The room, although quite small, was clean, with good sized towels and a very decent shower. It was good value for money.
Review 55:My only suggestion is that as the walls are quite thin guests should advised not to have the TV on late into the night - and generally to have the sound turned down as low as they can hear it in their room.
Review 56:Excellent welcome from Ali; offered a meal although we arrived late in the evening. As we needed to be away before the start time for breakfast were given a "breakfast to go" - just what was needed to start the journey. Good location and wonderful old building. Liked the bar although we were too late in arriving to enjoy this!
Review 57:Car parking can be tight if you arrive later in the evening
Review 58:This was the first time we had stayed at the Red Lion though we visit Hythe several times a year. We had been cautious before as it is right by a main road and we expected it to be noisy. Also the rooms are over the pub and restaurant which could make it more disturbing during the evening. We were wrong on both counts! The double room was spacious with a well-appointed bathroom, plenty of hanging space, a comfy armchair and a desk. Even some very nice biscuits provided. Breakfast was a generous continental buffet and full English if required. The staff are friendly and attentive. We were able to book two early breakfasts to fit in with our plans and this was done with no problem. We shall not hesitate to book here again. Many thanks!
Review 59:for a reasonably priced pub/hotel, we couldn't fault anything. The rooms were provided with plenty of tea/coffee, milk/cream - and biscuits!, the breakfasts were excellent, the evening meal menu you were spoilt for choice and the food was delicious. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and we'll definitely stay there again.
Review 60:Shower was noisy, but how long does it take to have a shower, TV very small but didn't even turn it on! Minor details and nothing which actually spoiled our stay.
Review 61:Very friendly staff, good sized room, lovely food, overall very enjoyable
Review 62:WiFi was only available for 30 minutes. Too light in bedroom due to curtains not blocking out street lights
Review 63:Good restaurant on site. Very easy to get to from the tunnel.
Review 64:Nothing bad. The only thing we would change would be nicer coffee in the rooms and offer a bespoke breakfast. 4 out of 5 of us in the party didn't eat their mushroom or tomato and 2 of us would have had no bacon if offered. It was lovely food and a shame to waste it.
Review 65:The beds were super comfy and the rooms were large. The staff were all lovely and went out on the Friday night to buy Soya milk for our youngest child so he could have it with his breakfast.
Review 66:The size of the TV was quite ridiculas, whilst I was not expecting a large wide screen TV. It would have been much better to have one that was at least 26 inches and placed on the wall opposite the bed. Also would have been nice to be able to open the window.
Review 67:Nice large comfortable room and good bathroom
Review 68:Nothing bad to report,
Review 69:Manager and staff were very welcoming. Food was good quality pub food, great atmosphere.Manager went out of her way to be helpful in giving us early access to our room.
Review 70:Room was not warm, shower noisy, mould/mildew on ceiling above shower, cobwebs in bathroom too. It was nearly midnight when the above was discovered after attending a wedding at Lympne Castle, so we went with it. The bed was comfy.
Review 71:Breakfast was nice, friendly staff.
Review 72:We turned up at 1500 to check in to find a notice on the door to say we couldn't check in until 1800. They did have our contact details so we could of amended our plans for a few hours. Other than that the services were good.
Review 73:The TV was really small but we didn't watch it so not really an issue!
Review 74:The room was very spacious and clean The King size bed was really comfortable. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was nice. In a good location All in all good value for money. Would recommend.
Review 75:There is nothing we did not like Although I was not aware of free wifi But it really isn't a problem The hotel was great
Review 76:Room was very clean Food was superb Staff could not do enough to help us
Review 77:Ideal stop over for the tunnel. Evening meal was excellent as was the Breakfast. Friendliness of the staff was great and informative, made us feel at home.
Review 78:Quite basic but pleasant enough but road was noisy and shower took an age to warm up..overall though nice people and nice enough facilities
Review 79:Very comfy bed and pleasant surroundings
Review 80:Loved the personal and warm welcome, the fantastic food, the value for money and the general positive attitude. The team here know how to look after their guests.
Review 81:Wifi in the room was not very strong so staying in touch with our business was not always easy but we managed and in the bar and restaurant the wifi was excellent
Review 82:The genuine care and attention taken by staff and the landlady Debs, to making our stay pleasurable and pleasant
Review 83:friendly staff great food great atmosphere offered us packed lunch instead of breakfast as we had to leave early very accomodating highly recommend it
Review 84:The Red Lion is easy to find and a perfect location to explore the rest of Hythe. We used it as a stop over prior to an early departure to the Port of Dover to visit France. The hotel is clean & tidy with spacious rooms and excellent value for money. It comes highly recommended and we will be back.
Review 85:We found the room to be spacious & very comfortable and the bathroom facilities very modern and the breakfast to be plentiful. Overall a great place for a bed and breakfast
Review 86:room very plain no shower gel or shampoo provided staircase was grubby no staff except at mealtimes
Review 87:bed was large and comfy good breakfast Value for money
Review 88:I would say didn't like is too strong a word. I would say that it is a lovely pub and perhaps redecorating the bedroom to make it a little more cosy would be the icing on the cake. It was a little spare and cold feeling but the food more than made up for it.
Review 89:The food was amazing. It was probably the best food we had eaten outside of a London Restaurant. Truly wonderful. The staff were also lovely. Everyone was so friendly and made our stay really comfortable. Very comfortable bed as well.
Review 90:lounge bar seating and room furniture really need updating.
Review 91:the bed was comfortable and clean, plenty of hot water in room which was warm. Breakfast was good, staff friendly.
Review 92:The TV was tiny, but not a real problem as we spent most of our time in the pub downstairs, which was really comfortable!
Review 93:The bar staff were friendly and the meals were fantastic!! The room was big & clean and surpassed my expectations!
Review 94:The car park is just adequate and could do with tidying up. The outside of the building looks a little tired - but that's understandable given the amount of years it's been there.
Review 95:Inside the inn was warm and welcoming and the staf were very helpful. Breakfast was a decent full english or cereal etc. We ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent, the menu varied and good value for money
Review 96:My youngest Son said " I thought a room in a pub would be old decor, dark and dirty rooms, but I was pleasantly surprised ! " His Dad said " That was the best Full English Breakfast I have tasted for a longtime" and I say What brilliant value all round & will likely sometime. Thank you Sue, Debbie and Julie
Review 97:The noisy traffic and being woken by lorry air breaks but can't be helped.
Review 98:Supper was amazing. Room was nice and linen seemed good quality. Breakfast was good but lacked a little compared to evening food.
Review 99:Entrance is shabby but will be greatly improved when the redecoration is complete. The bread at breakfast was disappointingly bland but fair enough for the price that we paid overall. Also - just a suggestion - a simple full length mirror in the room would be helpful.
Review 100:Well situated near the High Sreet and the early check-in facility at noon gave us time to prepare for a wedding - and we were given an iron within two minutes of requesting one. The bedrooms are much smarter than the public area downstairs. Excellent night's sleep in twin beds with the best pillows we have been given throughout our three weeks of travel! Fabulous bacon at breakfast. Really helpful and delightful staff.
Review 101:Initial impression on arriving in the car park (at the rear) was that it looked closed - under refurbishment,
Review 102:Good value hotel Comfortable room Excellent breakfast Nice friendly people Breakfast room and bar nicely refurbished.
Review 103:Our room, No. 6 "family room" was above the kitchen, and all the time there was a hearable fan/ventilator running. Additional there was another, much louder fan running in intervals. That made it difficult to sleep through at night, even with shut windows. The old/traditional windows clattered when wind came up. Next stay we will book a room facing the street. I have no doubt, that without the kitchenfans we would have slept very good! Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay.
Review 104:We liked the room itself, the big, comfortable bed and having a bath on our own. Staff was very friendly, breakfast very good, adaptable to our wishes. Cooked food in the restaurant seemed good value. Free parking was helpful. The hotel is located only a few hunderet meters from the beach.
Review 105:Good overnight stop in a convenient location. Food good and staff helpful and welcoming. The kitchen freezer was a bit noisy at night - but not really a problem.
Review 106:we never met our hosts at anytime we were greeted with an envelope with our name and room no.The room was very stuffy and only one out of three windows would open.
Review 107:location , breakfast, evening meals
Review 108:First impression of staff serving breakfast on the first day, appalling. She needed a course in customer services, was totally stressed out and almost rude. Bed was not made or room tidied for second night, tea and coffee sachets not replaced, had to ask on second day. Scrambled eggs overcooked like rubber. Service did get better in the end.
Review 109:The location is right there for a quick hop to the shops or to the beach. Nice large room, nice hot shower. Full cooked breakfast good quality and well cooked.
Review 110:The shower pressure & hot water was hit & miss, room basic. Breakfast was nothing special. Overall we felt was over priced for what you got, could have got better for less elsewhere.
Review 111:The restaurant food was good. Would eat here again.
Review 112:no help offered to carry overnight bag to room although my husband was obviously walking with a stick and we had to go through the bar a nd another room, push a very stiff door and negotiate a stair case our cooked breakfast was left on the table although we were still having cereal the toilet in uour room had to be left for about 10 mins for the cistern to fill - inconvenient- did report this we went out for a walk in the afternoon and on return had to walk through a funeral meal to access our room as the back door was shut - very embarrassing
Review 113:location was handy good advice on how to reach Euotunnel terminal
Review 114:Nothing really - rather a lot of traffic noise in the bedroom but no more than you would expect in a town centre location.
Review 115:Excellent friendly and helpful staff, clean well equipped bedrooms, good food. Our party had to leave before breakfast so a packed lunch was provided - brilliant!
Review 116:Room/en-suite quite small but adequate for short stay.
Review 117:Clean & Comfortable, excellent food, good beer. Staff were obliging, requested an earlier breakfast (normally 8:30) and was provided without hesitation.
Review 118:Being woken at 6 am by the bin men outside the bedroom window! The property is a little run down and in need of redecoration throughout.
Review 119:Pleasant, a nice sized room, good breakfast and very friendly staff/owner.
Review 120:The entrance into, and up to the rooms was awful! I really thought what have i done!!! The decor needs a complete overhaul and the stair carpet needs striping out and taking to the tip because it lets the place down. If the rooms had not been so nice i would have asked for a refund! Fortunately the rooms were acceptable and very clean.
Review 121:We had 2 rooms as a family and both had good showers. The large double beds were very comfortable. The Bar and Eating areas were well presented and an enjoyable place to spend time in. Breakfast was good and well presented and served with a smile! Our Anniversary evening meal was excellent and enjoyable so that was a plus as well.
Review 122:Bed was very creaky and every time I turned over a spring "got me"
Review 123:Location, breakfast, value for money, free wifi & friendly helpful staff
Review 124:The room smelt of dogs. The evening meal and breakfast was very poor. We arrived late afternoon and used the rear entrance which was not inviting at all. No staff present and key left in hall. Very old hotel.
Review 125:Sorry not a lot. Staff were friendly.
Review 126:I thought the Kronanberg beer was expensive at £4.25 and the old speckel hen beer had funny taste.
Review 127:Breakfast was very good. I Liked almost every thing.
Review 128:Dated basic premises in lodgings area of pub. Nothing out at breakfast when we came down at 945am when serving was til 1030am. Only 1sausage and plate of beans with a tomato for veg option of cooked breakfast. 2 sausages or a hash brown or similar would have been better.
Review 129:Friendly staff Clean bedding and bathroom Breakfast was good Location ideal for town centre and supermarket etc.
Review 130:We did have the unfortunate room above the kitchen fridge aircon unit. Whilst it was noisey, I have to say we were so tired that it didn't interrupt our sleep. Would still stay there again!
Review 131:Staff, food, drink, comfort, clean.... everything you need for a stay were all good!! No issues or problems at all and any questions about the Hotel or area were answered by the lovely, open and approachable staff immediately. Great Stay!
Review 132:A lot of road noise and a very uncomfortable bed, we requested a king size when booking but got a double which we are not used too.
Review 133:A good location for tunnel and ferry ports, landlady very helpful, we were up early before breakfast so she made us a packed lunch.
