Reviews for Hôtel Le Cro-Magnon

Review 1:The location was perfect. The town is small but perfectly situated to enjoy the painted caves, both in Lascaux and in Les Eyzies i at Guame. The staff was delightful and very helpful with any question we had. We dined at the hotel twice because it was such excellent food!

Review 2:The hotel badly needs updating and modernising. The shower was in a bath with no curtain so it's impossible not to flood the bathroom.

Review 3:The hotel is ideally located so you can walk into town and looks lovely from the outside. The owners were friendly and helpful.

Review 4:This hotel is not part of he crowded touristic center of Les Eyzies, which is a welcome relief from the shops and crowds. Although on the main street, it offers a quiet refuge, with a small swimming pool, enclosed garden, and possibility to dine outside under the trees. The room we had was a bit basic, and some of the closet spaces were difficult to open, but as a whole it was adequate for our needs. There is no lift, so if your roomis upstairs, you must carry your suitcase up to the top floors - but in our case, the woman at the reception desk was very helpful, and offered to carry our big suitcase upstairs for us. She helped again to carry it down when we checked out. We ate dinner at the hotel twice, sitting out in the enclosed garden under the trees - both times excellent meals for a reasonable price. We will certainly stay here again if we return to Les Eyzies.

Review 5:Nothing bad to say

Review 6:We loved Cro-Magnon. Beautiful hotel, great setting and location. Lady in reception was always there to help with any queries. Great pool.

Review 7:The hotel is ideally located to access the historic museums and sites and is in easy walking distance to the restaurants and bars but far enough to be away from the visiting crowds. The meal that we had at the hotel was excellent.

Review 8:The staff were friendly and helpful. We were on a cycling holiday and so problem to leave our suitcases there for the duration of our touring, nor to store the bikes until they were collected from the hire company. Great exhibition next door and in the town..

Review 9:Rooms very dated, especially bathroom. Only hand held shower over bath. Meals in restaurant pricey and breakfast looked sparse with coffee in flasks, rather than fresh (although we went out and didn't experience it). Plenty of good, reasonably priced restaurants nearby.

Review 10:Location good. Large room with Comfy bed. Nice pool.

Review 11:Breakfast okay, but the last down might have little choice. Plumbing very noisy and the 'weather' brought out ants even though we weren't on the ground floor.

Review 12:Good sized room, and bathroom, excellent wifi access

Review 13:The room key's an old type and I needed the help of the staff to get enter.

Review 14:The receptionists are so kind and gentle. The room's large enough. Easy to find. And calm and tranquil. I can see the cliff "IN" the hotel. It's a quite unique experience.

Review 15:Cold and unwelcoming dining room. Why wasn't the fire lit on a drizzly March evening. I had to wear my fleece! And no hook for the shower head making it very difficult to shower comfortably.

Review 16:Charming and welcoming owners. Excellent location for visiting all the prehistoric sights. Very good freshly prepared food. Big room.

Review 17:Staff gave poor information about attractions and I went to Lascaux II but they close on mondays and they didn´t know. The same about access to Abri du Cap Blanc.I spent 60 euros in taxi for nothing and this are among the most importants places to go there,

Review 18:Hotel is beaultiful and cosy. 5 minutes walk from train station Big and confortable rooom. Wi-fi just OK Simple but good breakfast.. Quiet place

Review 19:The location in LesEyvies was perfect for museum and cave visits nearby, as well as drives around the area to the wonderful towns, including Sarlat, Saint Leon, Domme, Le Roque Cagneac, and Beynac and Lascaux II. The wife and husband owners were perfect and helpful hosts and the husband a wonderful chef.

Review 20:The hotel is an old hotel with lots of character. It had a living room on our floor where we could use the internet, relax or read, It is owned by a couple. The wife is always available at the desk and her husband prepares some of the best dinners that we ate in France. It has an excellent location

Review 21:The only negative was that we could hear other rooms when the toilets were flushed or showers taken. However, this was not really a problem that kept us from sleeping.

Review 22:The owner was very welcoming and the room was relatively large and comfortable. The hotel is very well located next to two important paleolithic sites. Also, the breakfasts were among the best we had in France. We stayed for 5 days and would likely stay there again if we visit the area again.

Review 23:Covered above

Review 24:Fantastic location and really charming looking hotel with a small but lovely pool in a small but beautifully planted courtyard in the rocks. Dinner was very good but perhaps a little more fine dining than we needed after a days travelling. Lovely waking to a cool misty morning after the heat of the previous day - this soon gave way to another glorious hot morning. Oh, and the inside of the hotel is like stepping back in comfortable time - warm wooden staircases, comfy library/sitting room and raw rockface in the corridors upstairs. Large ensuite rooms with newly refrurbished bathrooms. Had shower attachments on bathtubs which was in keeping with the decor but would have preferred if you could hang them from the wall as its hard to shower when holding them. It's my only gripe and a question of personal preference rather than a failing in hotel amenities.

Review 25:the hotel has beautiful woodwork but needs to be thinking about replacing its soft furnishings soon.

Review 26:Location was terrific - only about 200m away from the centre of town, but far enough away to be quiet and peaceful (except when the local train comes through town!). Hotel was comfortable, the room a generous size the staff courteous.

Review 27:Is located on main thoroughfair of a beautiful, tourist village, but surprisingly drivers very cautious and considerate so we slept well. In its hayday would have been an extremely elegant hotel, do feel some furnishings need updating, but did not mind as it had so much to offer. Would have liked t stay longer

Review 28:Quirky, elegant hotel. Unique Lovely, personable service Interesting evening meal. Reception rooms, stairs, outside areas and cave walls in the corridors

Review 29:Didn't stayed long enough to enjoy.

Review 30:Due to a accident in the highway, traffic was delayed for more than 4 hours was able to email the hotel telling them of hour late arrival. Although late in the morning 1am, very accommodating and courteous staff. Is not a modern hotel in the sense of bells and whistles and ultra modern decor, but full of French charm. Room was very large, very modern bathroom, looked brand new. I prefer character of older hotels, vs ultra modern decor. Very nicely decorated, beautiful woodwork on the staircase. Excellent location, exceeded our expectations, would definitely stay there again. Great location to see the Dordogne region, in a very nice town. Parking right across the hotel, very safe, no problems. Would highly reccomend.

Review 31:My boyfriend didn't like that he couldn't have a 'real shower', because there was no place to hang the spray attachment. But it wasn't too big of a deal for either of us. We wish we had at least another night in the region, if not more.

Review 32:This was our first night in France, and we were overjoyed with the location and surrounding environment. We only stayed one night, so we didn't get to take full advantage of everything, but the madame at the front counter was very nice, the mattress was pretty good, and I enjoyed the tub. We wished we could have stayed longer. Good wifi, too!

Review 33:Very friendly

Review 34:This was a good location as our base for exploring the area. The decor is tired but the bed was comfy and we enjoyed the dinners.

Review 35:Nothing

Review 36:Very good location if you are doing the caves. Much better than Salat. Good food and service. Owners very nice.

Review 37:Lovely location friendly family run hotel . Delicious home cooked dinner. Good choice on menu Very good value

Review 38:We ate in the restaurant one evening and the meal was absolutely superb

Review 39:Road and train noise

Review 40:Having a fan on a crazy hot day plus the lovely cool swimming pool

Review 41:Room a bit small

Review 42:Helpful staff

Review 43:comfortable, helpful staff

Review 44:Il faut absolument dîner à l'Hôtel. Digne d'un 5 étoiles et à prix très abordable!

Review 45:The dining facilities, staff and menu were excelkent

Review 46:close to road and train.

Review 47:very french, good food, pool, not a chain hotel! Convenient, free parking

Review 48:Architecture and location.

Review 49:The bathrooms are awful.

Review 50:Restuarant

Review 51:Everything

Review 52:A charming hotel, very friendly and welcoming! Excellent place to stay and enjoy the area.

Review 53:I would like to see a bigger dining choice

Review 54:Very nice and spacious hotel. Perfect location, very nice owners.

Review 55:Restaurant was good - very nice food, good value.

Review 56:The location and the big rock outside our room, very atmospheric.

Review 57:Poor shower arrangement

Review 58:Centrally placed

Review 59:Road works outside.

Review 60:Good Restaurant and they kindly offered money-off because of road-wprks outside.

Review 61:Traffic noise from road outside. Hotel is close to a rail crossing - no trains, but the rails still there and make the trucks rattle as they pass. On weekday mornings, can get you up early!

Review 62:The rooms are adequate, contain everything required but are not particularly modern. Bed comfortable, decorations a bit passe. However, restaurant is really excellent - first-class Chef (husband of the husbandandwife team). Nice smallish pool in secluded garden at rear. Hotel well located for all the Caves and Gorges and Cave paintings (Lascaux etc), and Les Eyzies has the excellent Museum of Prehistory to visit - a must.

Review 63:Nothing to fault.

Review 64:Family run hotel, well equipped and with very responsive personal attention. We were well looked after and would also recommend the hotel restaurant. Overall, it came up to our expectations of a traditional French rural establishment.

Review 65:Older, so no soundproofing - you could hear everything in the halls and other rooms. Floors creaked, a lot. Wifi was out 80% of our two-day stay. Decor in some places shabby. You really can see through a keyhole, so keep the key in the lock. Tub did not really work as a shower OR a tub. You had to hold the showerhead the whole time while standing, or, if you chose to bathe, your hips must be 36" or less. Literally. Very narrow. The breakfast was so-so.

Review 66:Elegant, old-world. Lots of history. Built right into the cliff near the Abri Cro-Magnon. Gorgeous wooden staircase. Clean, comfortable. Unique reading nook, lounge with fossils displayed, beautiful gardens. Restaurant, breakfast room, terrace, all beautiful.

Review 67:Hotel was clean and comfortable for our one night and was within walking distance of the township and places to eat. The breakfast offered a good selection. The location was good to explore surrounding areas.

Review 68:- mediocre dinner/breakfast - location: at the end of main-street - the rain

Review 69:- large room - professional, helpful staff - interesting main staircase (historic)

Review 70:Room bright, good size, attractive decor, kept spotlessly clean, plenty of towels and toiletries. Hotel is very well located, 2mn walk from railway station and 5mn walk into village. Friendly and welcoming owners always on reception, and went out of their way to help with my visits to the caves at Font-de-Gaume and Les Combarelles. I felt really safe, comfortable and well looked after, I would definitely stay here again.

Review 71:There was nothing I didn't like at the hotel -it was all good. Ideally I would have preferred not to have street lights on all night as they shine in the windows.

Review 72:Having looked at the hotel's website I decided to go for demi pension when I got there, which gave me breakfast and a 3 course dinner as well as the room. What a good decision-breakfast is an ample buffet including meat and cheese with scrambled eggs cooked if you wish. The dinners were superb-a wide choice of typical local dishes, exquisitely presented and full of delicious flavours(I have pictures which I'd love to put up) with a very polite and thoughtful waitress. Madame and Monsieur are very helpful and Madame speaks good English. The Hotel is away from the centre of town, about 10 minutes walk and only a few steps from the tiny train station(about 4 trains a day), so it is very quiet. Rooms were well cleaned daily with fresh towels. (Soap and shower gel are provided as well as a hair dryer).

Review 73:Les Ezyes was my favourite little Dordogne village, and the Hotel Cro-Magnon my favourite hotel on this trip. Spacious rooms, yesteryear charm and furnishings with modern amenities - plus the wonderful cliff wall on the 2nd floor, friendly helpful staff, easy walking to restaurants, and a perfect location for exploring the prehistoric caves and chateaux in the Dordogne.

Review 74:Bit of a walk into the centre, but only a few minutes.

Review 75:It's not a chain, and has its own unique style. Fine old building built into the rockface. Furnishings and decor old-fashioned, quality, comfortable. Plenty of public space, and different choices. Food delicious Owners friendly and helpful

Review 76:The hotel was right near the caves we wanted to visit. On the main A road set into the ancient rocks. It felt like old world french charm. No separate shower but we loved lying in the old french bath. Friendly family run hotel.with delightful outdoor eating terrace.

Review 77:very old facility, no a/c, it was very hot, very old bathroom, little parking available, no elevator, had to carry bags up 3 flights of narrow stairs, dark hallways

Review 78:location

Review 79:The location at the base of the cliffs in a small town was ideal for exploring local Palaeolithic caves and rock art. It is walking distance from the top quality museum of ancient prehistory at Les Ezies as well local shops and restaurants.

Review 80:No internet access was available in our room, only in the common areas of the hotel.

Review 81:The restaurant was outstanding - the best of any at which we ate in the area. The staff was above average and very helpful in many ways.

Review 82:The large, king sized room which I reserved was fine except that it hada bathtub with only a hand-held shower. This is common in France, butfor some reason, not what I was expecting. I asked to be moved toanother room, which was smaller but had a standard shower, and the hotelaccommodated me. Also, we stayed for 6 days but there was no dresser inthe room, so it made unpacking more difficult.

Review 83:This hotel is in a is a tiny village, but it is in the center ofprehistoric art in France. It is a wonderful location. The people at thehotel were very nice, the restaurant is good. It is a Mom and popoperation. The man of the team of owners saw my husband was sitting in apublic room one night on his computer and brought him a glass of wine asa courtesy.

Review 84:We would have liked the larger room, but really wanted a shower rather than tub. We didn't understand that the tub had a shower on a hose, that would have met our needs.

Review 85:I loved the hotel and the town of Les Eyzies. The restaurant was wonderful, one of the best meals we had in France.

Review 86:The person in reception (the owner) told me, at arrival, that breakfastwas included in our booking; later, when I paid she charged €11 eachbreakfast! So, she just tried to fool us. There was a dog in therestaurant asking for food or waiting under the table. The illuminationwas very poor, to a point that you cannot see the details of the cave, you need extra light. The Cromagnons were not found exactly where thehotel was built (in bookings the info is misleading); there is a site 2blocks from there where the excavation is.

Review 87:The rooms

Review 88:Location

Review 89:Pricey although average for region.

Review 90:Very nice hotel. Clean, cute and perfectly located. Of course the area is stunning and a great place to stay.

Review 91:Interesting old hotel in beautiful location.

Review 92:breakfast was overpriced

Review 93:great parking, staff were polite and attentive

Review 94:Absolutely great ambiance and facility. Really elegant room according to my wife.

Review 95:It needed some more custom

Review 96:The meals were very good

Review 97:Very helpful at front desk,no elevator but helped us with luggage, wifi worked great in 3rd floor room.

Review 98:N/A

Review 99:Close to town:comfortable and not noisy.

Review 100:Nice little town, easy drive to Lascaux.

Review 101:no elevator.

Review 102:Outstanding dinner!

Review 103:Nothing.
