Reviews for Ely Guest House
Review 1:The name "Guest House" was a misnomer.: the room was in an adjacent block, . Locating staff not easy: to speak to someone, had to go outside, since room was "around the corner" ( outside). TV reception poor. It may have been the aerial. We called someone to fix it, but no improvement.
Review 2:Location, close to town center and Cathedral. Care had been taken on decor. This ensuite room was comfortable enough for our brief stay.
Review 3:The room was perfect for us, as a young couple only staying for one night, but I can see that there were a few things that might impact a longer stay: there were strange noises from pipes throughout the night, and a really high-pitched whistling sound (might not even be able to hear it if you're a little but older!)
Review 4:Absolutely brilliant position, just steps away from the Cathedral and the restaurants on the highstreet (I would recommend the Prezzo). The check in was painless and efficient. Very lovely staff. Good value for money.
Review 5:Room very basic with quite a lot of traffic noise.
Review 6:Excellent location right in centre of city. Free parking available close by and plenty of food outlets nearby.
Review 7:Google maps location is wrong. Shower not working properly. Flat single pillow. Tea cup too small to brew tea in. Money demanded in cash in advance. "No breakfast" is not clearly stated.
Review 8:Central location
Review 9:It was ideal for what we wanted. A one night stay as we were visiting friends in the city. Cheap and ideal location. A little rough around the edges but ok.
Review 10:not clean tops of tables, carpet, and bathroom (toilets not clean, the bath not cleaned the first day). not previously told that the day of my departure they could not provide any service, incl. living my luggage for the day. I had to leave it at a venue The Lamb, next door. Not very welcoming staff and only one. SO, if Sunday I had had any trouble, nobody would have been there to help! the towels were very rough and hard, and with holes.
Review 11:clean bed, good window view, close to where I wanted to be
Review 12:Room facing street, therefore traffic noise after 5 a.m. Many would not like to share bathroom. Charged extra for wi-fi, which I didn't use.
Review 13:Central location; nice single room, not too small; all lights, television etc. in working order. Didn't mind sharing bathroom. Several places within easy reach for breakfast. Preferred that there was no breakfast.
Review 14:There is no breakfast offered (i.e. it is not a B&B, just sleeping rooms), no reception area, and the rooms are on top of a Thai restaurant so you get cooking smells. There is a limited time to check in. You have to pay in cash on arrival (no credit card option). No free Wi-Fi. The furnishings are very shabby - my pillow case had holes in it. We booked because it looked like good value for money in a good spot but travellers would be advised to pay a bit more for a nicer place. We had to get an extra room for our niece and it was £75 for something pretty basic.
Review 15:The location is good, very near the Cathedral and town, though best to get a back room as the place is right on the street and is noisy during the day. There is a courtyard with a table.
Review 16:The room smelt a bit stale and damp and the sheets didn't smell very fresh. I felt it was overpriced for what was offered.
Review 17:A good location; easy to pick up keys and drop them off; the room was separate from the rest of the house and situated in the garden which was very quiet. Easy access. The shower was powerful.
Review 18:As a back specialist, the bed rates as one of the worst I've everencountered anywhere in the world. Should be renewed immediately andwith a medium mattress - hard and too soft a mattress is bad for backs.Thank God for my emergency air bed or I would have had to sleep in thecar!! Were the sheets changed before I arrived - I don't know?!Crockery dirty/unwashed. Bathroom should be cleaner than that andneeds a full going over: modernising the bathroom completely would help, but it needs to be thoroughly cleaned every time to keep it up toscratch. Despite being in a side room, the traffic - starting at 5am -sounded as if it were going through the bedroom - double glazing wouldsort that. The room/s above mine had loud, creaky floor/s andtheir having to come down to use a bathroom outside my room meant adisturbed night from that aspect as well. Parking is only a minorsetback as the free parking in most parts of the town is a veryenlightened and helpful feature of Ely. I was there for work and thepoor sleep, due to all of the above, had a definite negative on that -filming at Ely cathedral. All of the above means that I would notrecommend this guest house. If the owners were to correct the above, then I would definitely, and highly, recommend it: it has hugepotential. I am also coming away with the feeling of having wasted afair amount of money, particularly as, effectively, I had to provide myown bed!!!
Review 19:Central location couldn't be faulted. Coming and going as onepleased. The one young member of staff I encountered in the Thairestaurant on arrival was excellent.
Review 20:Bed too soft, the bathroom had slight mould on the ceiling, the decor looked tired in the bathroom, and Cash only (especially as you checked in at a restaurant that did take credit and debit cards)
Review 21:Ely is a great little town
Review 22:My room was above the pedestrian traffic light on the street side. It was really noisy. Next time I ´ll insist on a garden side room and it Will be perfect.
Review 23:It flet like a very Clean and well look ex acteur place with Even some cute décorations in the room.
Review 24:Nothing we didn't like as such. Maybe just a little expensive for no breakfast available.
Review 25:The receptionist was delightful and welcoming. Loved the closeness to the cathedral where we were singing for the weekend. Loved the quaintness of the building.
Review 26:Did not investigate enough but had to pay cash for the room which wasbasic to say the least! Toilet not very clean - bleach is available isall good hardware shops. No breakfast, which is more normal I wouldsuggest. Do not stay here
Review 27:None of it
Review 28:Nothing to dislike, is over a restaurant and next-door to a pub!
Review 29:Very central location beautiful old listed building. Beds VERY comfy, excellent shower. Room rather dusty and they don't do breakfast but loads of eateries on the doorstep. Will stay again
Review 30:Very old sheets, some were torn, one had a darn about 4" long at the top, didn't look clean. Room was dussty. Booking.com paperwork said they took visa but they only accepted cash.
Review 31:Staff friendly
Review 32:Read the conditions carefully, everything is explained honestly. Though I think gbp3 for one evening of WiFi is overpriced and brought down the overall enjoyment of staying here.
Review 33:Location and staff
Review 34:Very warm room with little opportunity to get a breeze.
Review 35:Location. Having partied at the Cathedral until 11.30 pm it was only a 2 minute walk to the room.
Review 36:wouldn't allow dogs, shower a bit awkward, but over priced for what it was, no designated parking. No breakfast
Review 37:staff freindly And room comfortable
Review 38:Staff were not professional, they were in fact quite angry at my arrival. I was stuck in Ely as I had missed the last train to Norwich and the taxi was asking for £120 so I booked this BnB on my smartphone.
Review 39:Room was very nice. I was able to book it easily on Booking.com
Review 40:The room was terribly cold and icy when arrived and through out the night, the sheets and towers felt wet. The room was dirty, og the Asian personale were not pleasant at all. Nothing reminded me of a British family-run guest house.
Review 41:Location is good, Close to the Cathedral
Review 42:We knew in advance: cash only & no breakfast - we go to The Lamb Hotel across the road for a fiver each!
Review 43:Lovely big room & well heated. Nice building in a great location. Our 2nd visit so would return.
Review 44:Not told had to check in in restaurant below. Not told would be sharing bathroom. Website didn't say ensuite but expected a basin in room.
Review 45:Clean, basic but good value
Review 46:Shared bathroom No staff on site at night No hairdryer Creaky bed Thin walls
Review 47:Very central location Single room only cost £40 so my expectations should have been lower
Review 48:No wash hand basin/small sink in the bedroomfor water. Had to get water for kettle in communual bathroom. Also decent light in bathroom above the mirror would be a good help.
Review 49:Booking in decidedly not user friendly. Very expensive for basic accommodation with no breakfast. Value for money? No. Overall marks out of 10 - 3.
Review 50:Good location.
Review 51:Wouldn't recommend it for older people. The stairs are very narrow to take up two suitcases. Only one pillow that was too high Bottom sheet that didn't fit properly Hard towels
Review 52:Handy location Friendly staff but very busy Well serviced
Review 53:Small uncomfortable bed. Low ceilings. Thin walls. Not sure of the facilities, I was not shown round. Near a busy main road and above a Thai restaurant so is loud.
Review 54:Good last minute place to stay. Safe rooms. A decent place to stay for the price.
Review 55:Bedding was clean but appeared old . Due for replacement ?.. No parking facility only nearby public car park for only 2hours. Until after 5pm.
Review 56:Location ideal and quiet at night. rRoom clean .
Review 57:One downside was the fact that breakfast was not included.
Review 58:We liked the locality the fact that it was right in the centre, and the room was comfortable and very clean.
Review 59:It’s run as an adjunct to an Asian restaurant, and when that is closed, there is no one on duty. The stairs to my room in the “annex” were very steep.
Review 60:Staff was friendly and helpful, and it’s close to the cathedral.
Review 61:No breakfast No hand basin in room No free wifi Distance from railway Clean and roomy bathroom
Review 62:Comfortable room nicely appointed Character of very old building Restaurant in building Nearness to local attractions
Review 63:Two downsides: 1. The mattress was so cheap or old unfortunately that the springs in the mattress dug into my back or side, depending on how I tried to sleep. I left a note for the Owner suggesting a change of mattress. Certainly an easy to remedy issue, so hopefully this will improve. 2. The noise from the TV next door was very loud through the thin wall, but at least for me it didn't go on too late.
Review 64:The guesthouse is literally across the road from the cathedral, making it perfectly situated. The single room I stayed in was very pretty, and the bathroom was modern and clean. The check-out isn't until 11.30am, so I had time to wander round town before coming back to collect my rucksack.
Review 65:Nothing!!!
Review 66:The room was spacious and we'll set up. Very quite and comfortable. As a decorator found the decor weird but wonderful. Great use of various wallpapers. Brilliant!!!
Review 67:Some fixtures need replacing A bit noisy with the restaurant downstairs when trying to get an early night in
Review 68:Location Price Thai restaurant Nice garden Friendly staff
Review 69:The doors locks really need sorting out took me 5+ mins each time I wanted to lock the door! Electrics need updating a bit too. A bit noisy single glazed windows over main street. No venue parking.
Review 70:The hosts were very nice and helpful. Very central location 30 secs from Cathedral which is awesome. Best price. Free Parking (if you shuffle around places within the time limits)
Review 71:No access to staff if there's a problem. The shower was unusable and the sheet torn - and very expensive for such poor facilities. And no response from the owners on complaint.
Review 72:The place is central and clean
Review 73:The bed was very hard and uncomfortable. The room was very stuffy and if you opened a window to let in air, the noise from the street kept you awake. Tracking down staff to check in and out or for any questions was very difficult
Review 74:Location was right in the heart of Ely, which was convenient.
Review 75:Although the B&B was a lovely old building, the room furniture was very dated and the net curtains were shabby. The main road was just outside the window as was a pedestrian crossing which beeped night and day.No breakfast provided either.
Review 76:Location was great. Lovely small city. Good value restaurants and a lovely place to stroll around.
Review 77:Very small en suite shower room Not spotlessly clean Very warm room but too noisy outside to open windows Having to drag all overnight bags in to the restaurant to book in and pay for the room Located under a bed and breakfast search but no breakfast
Review 78:Comfortable bed Well decorated room Location is very central
Review 79:The curtains, which were shabby and torn and impossible to draw across for privacy.
Review 80:The freedom to come and go as we pleased. Friendly efficiency without fuss. Clean bedding. We stayed for 2 nights and the room was properly serviced between the first and second nights.
Review 81:Nonething to dislike to me every thing ok.
Review 82:The room is very good clean and tidy, the bathroom love it, also so clean to, love the shower nice to, the area is very nice to, good location too.
Review 83:Its too expensive for accommodation of this type when breakfast isn't included. The structure of the building is awful. Admittedly, I am 6'3" but I had to walk like Quasimodo up and down the stairs just to avoid smacking my head off the extremely low ceilings.
Review 84:Its convenient, clean and the staff are friendly.
Review 85:The character and furnishing of the building and its convenient location in Ely. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were very helpful to me following the failure of my mobile phone. Thank you!
Review 86:The bed wasn't fantastically comfortable but I had a good night's sleep notwithstanding. The ceilings were low so tall people could have a problem.
Review 87:So conveniently situated and free parking just around the corner as it was a Saturday evening/Sunday morning. Several places to have breakfast very close by. Evening meal is not a problem as the Ely Guest House is also a Thai restuarant. The building was very, very quaint and Americans would LOVE it! It is so close to the cathedral and city centre.
Review 88:The service was very very good
Review 89:Small and homely
Review 90:Could have been a bit warmer.
Review 91:Close to the centre, easy to find. Staff friendly.

Review 109:Realy friendly staff.
Review 110:Would be good if breakfast was included.
Review 111:Room was spacious and clean.
Review 112:The low head height on the stairs and the doorway to the bathroom
Review 113:The bed
Review 114:Room was dirty dust and finger prints on the bed lamp Bed draws handles very dirty
Review 115:narrow stairs to rooms ,difficult with suitcases.no free wifi
