Reviews for The Swan Hotel
Review 1:Couldn't sleep mattress like sleeping on a board hurt my bones. Breakfast unable to eat either cold or burnt, ate out but got reimbursedmttress not much better, breakfast next day couldn't face full English so had scrambled egg and tomatoes, they served dried out egg and fresh tomatoes cut in half but not cooked just fresh and cold toast not hardly toasted, my husband had full English again could not eat it he is diabetic so we had to pay and eat out again - we checked out NEVER TO RETURN.
Review 2:nothing
Review 3:When the 'chef' has a day off (twice per week) there is no breakfast
Review 4:Friendly staff, laid back attitudes a plus. My needs were well catered for without delay.
Review 5:The hotel is in poor repair. Major maintenance and updates required. The hotel was closed when we tried to book in. Morning staff although friendly we not properly trained in greeting guests and presenting breakfasts. We stayed 4 nights and our room was never serviced. Music from the bar could be heard in the room until late at night.
Review 6:Good location on High Street. A good price for the room. Breakfast was substantial.
Review 7:Staff were abrupt bordering on rude, the room's which were booked six weeks before arriving were available til 7pm the night before arrival then mysteriously weren't available on arrival plus the rooms we were given had to be last resort options as one was above the musical entertainment from downstairs til outside 3am end and the other room was above the smoking area so had constant chatter til 3am,
Review 8:Close to tunnel
Review 9:The staff didn't seem to have a clue what they were doing! It took me 5 minutes to get the attention of the reception person when we arrived as she was busy playing on her phone! The hotel smelt damp. There was mould in the bathroom and it was generally not very clean. The family room was above the bar where there was loud music and talking until gone 1am!! The floor in the room was so uneven we had to move furniture around to try and find a flat enough bit of floor for our daughters travel cot!! This place made the crooked house at the fair seem tame!!Breakfast doesn't start till 8.30am so no good if you have an early start. We needed to leave at 8am but there was no provision for any kind of early breakfast, even though we'd paid for it!!! I would definitely not be recommending this hotel.
Review 10:The only positive about this place was the fact it was only 10 minutes from the Eurotunnel!
Review 11:The family room was directly over the pub bar with loud music and to round out the evening, it sounded as if there was a fight in the bar, which spilled out onto the road directly under the only window in the family room. The breakfast was good, but served in the pub area on a sticky table that smelled of stale beer.
Review 12:heating not working, credit card machine not working, breakfast too late, light partly not working, shower partly broken, partly not working properly, holes in the wall, stains on the curtain; decided not to look for other issues
Review 13:Friendly staff trying to help and serve
Review 14:The bedrooms at the front can be very noisy from the swan bar below, requires double glazing
Review 15:Have stayed there before a number of times and it is getting better each time
Review 16:Would've been good to have heating in the bathroom.
Review 17:The room was comfortable and able to control our own heating which is good. It was a compact room but the furniture was good quality, the bed comfortable and had a good TV and kettle! Nice little room.
Review 18:Very smelly stairs sickly even. Bed was lumpy. Beds were sqeaking for ages above and I don't think it was mice!!!!! Breakfast poor.
Review 19:Location was good and price for room about right
Review 20:The bedding and towels were clean. However the room and facilities although reasonable cleanliness were atrocious. If you have ever stayed in a 4 star hotel before this wouldn't be for you. It was s stop over for the tunnel so for £30 for the few hours we were there it was bearable. Next time sleep in the car I think.
Review 21:Manager did not speak English & was drunk all the time did not have us booked in the bar was out of stock & when we went down for breakfast we where told there was no food at all
Review 22:The location
Review 23:just all old and im afraid that no amounts of magnolia will change this or take away the smell of rotten carpets, Needs FULL renovation
Review 24:The location and that they take pets
Review 25:Staff were unhelpful and didn't even know if they were providing breakfast as they 'don't usually on a Sunday'.
Review 26:Nice big bath with plenty of hot water
Review 27:The whole place was run down and needs lots of TLC. The curtains in the room had been used to clean paintbrushes. There is no WiFi. Not enough food to give everyone breakfast.
Review 28:The staff were very friendly and tried to help as much as they could.
Review 29:I said my mother was disabled and they put us in a twin room with steps into the bathroom. no pillows on the bed no milk to make tea. 3 of the 6 light bulbs did not work. They changed our room. the bathroom was a disgrace the floor sloped the sink had a crack in it and the shower unit had bad tiling the bathroom light only worked if the main lights were on. walking into the hotel . it spelt very damp. the breakfast was just as bad the mushrooms and hash browns were very over cooked asked for toast and was told no bread.
Review 30:Didn't have room clean service like refresh bed ,towel ,bathroom , replace clean cups and coffee snack. Small tv for big room Poor breakfast no safely night light when entrance back hotel unstable steps to lobby hotel door.
Review 31:Grotty dirty bathroom tiles & sink cracked, room over looked car park which was full of building rubble. No choice of breakfast, instant coffee....no butter on either of the two days.....could go on!,,
Review 32:Bed lovely and clean towels clean
Review 33:First impression reception area very dark & uninviting, strong smell of cigarette smoke in corridor, breakfast a bit hit and miss, obviously pre cooked & kept in hot cupboard until required. no butter for toast both mornings, but plenty of jam!!!
Review 34:Very good location, room a bit dated but functional. bathroom a bit old but very good shower and perfectly useable. Bed very comfortable.
Review 35:I enjoy a good moan so unfortunately not much to complain about.
Review 36:What more can one ask for arriving in the early hours of the morning being welcomed into a friendly environment with a glass of whisky to warm the heart. The staff are very helpful- Ivar is a fantastic host- he really made our stay a good one- his personal philosophy 'offering choice' meant that we always felt comfortable and catered for in this quirky little establishment. A bath after the whisky goes down a treat.
Review 37:decoration - poor, bed linen - v. poor, bathroom - falling to pieces, carpets - dirty, lighting - poor. furniture and fittings - falling to pieces.
Review 38:staff all friendly and helpful. breakfast and breakfast staff excellent. location and carpark. staff's friendly laid back yet very obliging attitude.
Review 39:The room was ok but the ceiling was a little worry it was boarded up. It looked as though there had been a leak previously. The wallpaper was falling away where it looked like the leak had been.
Review 40:Good to have kettle, towels etc in the rooms not bad for a short stay and the price. Only stayed for one night
Review 41:The reception was non-existent - they couldn't find our reservation for ages and could hardly speak English. There was no chair in the bedroom and the bedside lamp did not work. The quality of the breakfast was very poor.
Review 42:The hotel was clean and warm and the shower was good. It was inexpensive and conveniently situated for our (fortunately) brief visit.
Review 43:The bed,the breakfast and no bed for child as requested. This hotel needs a major refurbishment it is seriously run down which is a shame because Hythe is a lovely town.
Review 44:The location is perfect.
Review 45:Pub was run down and not well stocked. Seemed to have conflicting ideas of what it was trying to be.
Review 46:Hotel Room was not too hot which is brilliant. Position was excellent on the high street for restaurants etc Plenty of hot water nice full sized bath Comfortable but if you like staying in your room not ideal.
Review 47:Limited parking, old worn out mattresses on bed, terrible breakfast.
Review 48:Excellent location, smack back in the middle of town. Free wifi and good sized room.
Review 49:Woke up in the morning hoping to have breakfast (as this was included in the room rate) only to be told that cooker had broken so was unable to cook breakfast ( chief had only just got there, we was in the eating area before he was there) we had two young children hoping for something to eat before we left. we asked if they could just have toast again they said they did not have any bread.so we asked for a drink of orange juice and again we was told they did not have any only apple juice. Bathroom was could do with being cleaned and the toilet seat wad not on correctly.
Review 50:The rooms wad big and had plenty of room.
Review 51:The sink was cracked and the shower needs new tiles (however both were sparkling clean)
Review 52:I love old houses, this one is great Very pleasant staff, lovely location and very clean. The breakfast was generous and very tasty
Review 53:The noise inside the building. Needs a good make over. On leaving this morning was informed that they had no breakfast for us which we had paid for. No offer of an alternative or refund so left.
Review 54:It was in the town.
Review 55:The website claimed it was refurbished our room was dirty, mould on the ceiling. Bathroom had a cracked sink and very poor standard of decorations. Bed was uncomfortable with no head board. Breakfast was buffet which was disgusting didn't even eat it. The staff were dirty and unhygienic looking
Review 56:Location
Review 57:Decor a bit tired. Light bulbs bulbs need changing. More power sockets needed. Light over bathroom mirror not working.
Review 58:Location, car park, size of room and bathroom, breakfast.
Review 59:Breakfast was poorly presented and tables/utensils were dirty. Serving area needed cleaning. Room not serviced.
Review 60:Staff member at booking in and location of hotel in town
Review 61:A very old building so a certain amount of uneven floors etc were expected but it was a more like the crooked house at the fair!
Review 62:The hotel has lots of potential but seems very run down although the new (I assume) owners seem to be working hard to improve it. The staff were very friendly. Alright for one night (and a very easy trip to Dover to catch the ferry the next day).
Review 63:I booked bed and BREAKFAST. I left at 7.45 and there was no sign of any staff or breakfast. The only door that opened lead straight out to the car park. Could not find any staff and could see into the dining area and no staff were preparing it.
Review 64:Location was fine. Near Dover for the ferry.
Review 65:Musty smell in the hallway. Could do with freshening up. Breakfast area could do with a wipe down. Only one sugar jar and no ketchup.
Review 66:The staff. Very friendly. Happy to chat with us. Couldn't fault them.
Review 67:The room above a pub was not said that it was a pub in the adverd. Lot of noise smokers and people talking al nigt under your roomwindow. Swansign was making noise because of the wind keept us awake al night. Tv to small. Carpet was durty
Review 68:The location and the size of the room
Review 69:bathroom tired. No receipt at check in was told would be available at checkout but wasn't, breakfast staff had no idea! Rang to obtain email receipt but still waiting. Seems disorganised 3/5
Review 70:Comfortable bed Breakfast not bad.
Review 71:The decor was dated and the bed wasn't all that comfy. The breakfast was a little cold.
Review 72:We needed an early check in to get to a wedding on time. The manager was very helpful and let us check in 3 hours early.
Review 73:It was a cross between the Hotel Marigold and faulty towers!! The manager/ owner was really sweet and did his best.. It's a very old hotel/ pub in a quaint kent town .. The accommodation has not changed since the 70s however my husband and I saw the funny side of it all!!! Have not laughed so much in years... So for that reason alone it was worth it.. We were still chuckling about the experience yesterday... The staff and manager were really sweet..
Review 74:Didn't like anything at all
Review 75:Nothing at all. The hotel, bar & restaurant were filthy. The staff rude & the room had sewage coming up in the bath when we ran the taps in the sink!
Review 76:Did not feel welcome room was not ready on arrival there was alot of noise from the hotel doors were still open gone 3am we came with our 8 yr old daughter who could not sleep with all the noise we complained they did not seemed bothered we did not even stay for breakfast wont be staying there again
Review 77:The rooms and corridors were in need of some TLC as they were very shabby and in need of a deep clean.
Review 78:The staff were really friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was very good and there was plenty of it.
Review 79:The electrics were dodgy kettle going on ad off as you walk across the floor and the need to switch room lights on to switch bathroom light. A very rough bed with no headboard etc
Review 80:Location and breakfast
Review 81:No parking. The beds smelled of stale sweat I don't think the sheets had been changed. The breakfast would have been better if it hadn't been cold. Tiles falling off the wall in the shower.
Review 82:The hotel was in the centre of town.
Review 83:The first room we were put it was terrible - cracked walls, mouldy room fan, uneven floor, worn out carpet, grubby/dated bathroom. We moved to another room after complaining, which was better - but not by much!
Review 84:Free parking, although not many spaces
Review 85:Breakfast was a catastrophe in every way. No food at the buffet, customers getting angry and walking out, waitress close to meltdown, while the manager didn't seem to care.
Review 86:Room was clean and comfortable enough. Good location in centre of Hythe.
Review 87:The hotel was noisy on a Saturday night and could do with some redecoration although it was clean.
Review 88:The Hotel was well located with good parking and welcomed dogs.
Review 89:The worst bed ive ever slept in and the breakfast was so awful it ended up being a humorous topic for the rest of the day. So that's something.
Review 90:The village is sweet and there is a nice tea shop with fabulous staff across the road from the hotel.
Review 91:Stayed in the Canterbury room. Smelt very damp. Shower did not work. Breakfast had run out and we had to request they prepared food despite 40 minutes remaining for breakfast. Not the fault of be hotel but location was very noisy (late night fights on the high street)
Review 92:Staff where friendly and attentive.
Review 93:We went to bed at 11.45 pm. At midnight, people in the 2 rooms next to us started talking and shouting in their room and in the hallway outside our door, and going from room to room slamming the doors every time. This went on until 4 am. As we had to get up at 7.30 am we weren't very impressed. We assume these people were the staff. We are not a couple of old fogies who moan about everything, in fact this is the first time we have ever given a negative review about anything, but it was an horrendous night and totally unacceptable.
Review 94:The location is excellent. The room was fine for a 1 night stay.
Review 95:This hotel was awful and is not a hotel but rooms above a pub. We had a family room where there was no bath plug, the shower didn't work, the beds were awful and the noise from the pub prevented any sleep. The public areas were dirty and smelly. In the morning we almost had to cook our own breakfast!
Review 96:Nothing
Review 97:This desperately needs a makeover. From the scruffy car park to the well meaning but untrained staff...... A really sad state of affairs. Clean but very shabby.
Review 98:This is almost impossible to answer.
Review 99:The bathroom required re tiling and toilet seat replaced. The shower was as bad as they get. Cracked sink and required a good clean throughout .
Review 100:Nice location on high street.
Review 101:No bad experience. We enjoyed our stay.
Review 102:The Hotel was clean and the staff very welcoming. The breakfast was very generous and hot. I realise the building is very old and some renovation needs sorting, but we enjoyed our stay and will certainly stay again next time we are in Hythe.
Review 103:its an old building under renovation, the areas that have been completed are lovely. The car park at the back is modest in size - I would advise to book a space before you arrive if its important to have your car on site.
Review 104:Second visit to this hotel. Its well located on the village high Street, it has a fabulous Mexican restaurant on site, really delicious menu. The breakfast was included and was first class. The staff are really lovely and so helpful and nice. Thank you to the family for looking after us again - we will be back.
Review 105:The staff were inappropriate. They smelled of body odor and we're unable to answer simple questions. They were hard to find at most times.
Review 106:Despite trying hard, there were no positives at all with the stay at the Swan.
Review 107:Maintenance dreadful shower didn't work properly, water trickled out cold eventually getting to too hot and unable to control just had to get out in the end. Dirty room, dusty, mouldy, cobwebs, carpet filthy. Corridors smelt musty, fire door trapped open with a roll of carpet. I don't expect someone to tidy up after me and one set of towels for two nights is no problem, but normal hotels will at least make beds empty bins and straighten towels!!!!! the only way we knew someone had been in the room was the iron and ironing board had disappeared. One very thin flat pillow despite our request for extras when we booked in advance, eventually got a second pillow on our second night. Lock very loose. Breakfast was only just ok luke warm buffet , if you don't like cooked then!!! cornflakes bran flakes toast and honey, no fruit no yoghurt no marmalade no jam. It could be a lovely place with lots of character but a get the feeling the manager just won't spend any money on it. ps he is quick to take your money, secured with a credit card at booking we said we would pay cash, when we went to pay we were told the bill had been taken from the card the day before, I have paid on arrival and on departure never in the middle of a stay before.
Review 108:Pet friendly, The staff who tried there best. And the only clean thing was the bed linen.
Review 109:Being ignored by the manager. The room not being ready when we arrived - we had to wait for another 20 minutes. There was only a Mexican menu available - we had to search a cafe/restaraunt in the pooring rain. The family room being directly above the main bar - meant my 12 & 13 year old's and I had to put up with "Friday night bar noise" including regualr swearing from below until 11.45pm! No hot water in the shower on Saturday morning. The Hotel cleaner sitting in the bar at 9.00am on a Saturday morning with a pint of lager in her hand. The manager not being arround after breakfast so I could complain - I believe I spoke to the chef at this time. The bill being 20% more than a Premier Inn for supposidly the same 3 star level of accomodation.
Review 110:The Breakfast and the assistance of the female bar maid who assisted after the manager ignored me. (he was on the phone having a jovial and humorous discussion in Asian/Mexican when I arrived at reception)
Review 111:No breakfast although promised. Rooms never made up. Terrible greasy breakfast. Place needs decorating, I paid a ridiculous £74 per night, shod be £30, Absolutely awful.
Review 112:The room wasn't ready until 5.30pm. and it was not very clean. Very shabby. No telephone in room. although tea&coffee was there no milk was provided. There was no lift, or person to help with luggage. The bathroom door jammed and I was stuck in there until my friend woke up and managed to push the door open. The toilet seat was broken. Car parking was a nightmare because the road was very narrow and parked cars restricted the entrance. Loads of stairs to climb. unsuitable for disabled.
Review 113:The food was very good. The staff were pleasant.
Review 114:Website made it look better than it is. Fairly clean but very run down - stale smell in the corridors, bathroom tiles coming off the walls. WiFi a bit iffy.
Review 115:Friendly staff, comfortable bed, great location. We were expecting a Nepalese restaurant but apparently that changed last year to Mexican. We love Mexican food and this was one of the best. Breakfast was good too (fantastic sausages) but arrived in instalments over 20 mins.
Review 116:The bedroom and bathroom stank of wee, there had been an old leak in the roof that hadn't been redecorated, carpet was bare, place needed a jet wash and repainting, it was cheap though!
Review 117:Breakfast and staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 118:Previous reviews were accurate - one week later than 4th - we had the seagulls and the fighting locals till all hours. Restaurant was empty so we ate elsewhere. We can cope with shabby but lack of cleanliness is not acceptable - one bed smelled vile(ammonia/urine?) and the shower was not nice - I turned it on and black bits fell from the shower head- I couldn't turn the head from general shower to more direct flow - it was cold for ages and then went seriously too hot. We missed breakfast because we had to leave early and there were no alternative arrangements. Please clean it up and persuade Ralphy to drink elsewhere
Review 119:Convenience to tunnel
Review 120:The room was in need of hoovering. The bathroom had one hand towel for four of us, no plug in the sink or the bath and a poor shower. There was blood on my pillowcase and no mattress protector only a thin ill fitted sheet. I was totally disappointed as it certainly was not value for money. We did not stay for breakfast as the room itself gave us no confidence in their cleanliness downstairs. It should not be advertised for families as The Swan is a pub and up until 1am there was swearing and shouting outside, certainly not what you want with young children. This accommodation is suited for a tradesmen b&b.
Review 121:The bathroom was not very clean, broken tiles in the shower, bed very hard, decorating very poor, staff could not understand English, had to wait a while for a drink at the bar.
Review 122:The breakfast
Review 123:ran out of bread (both white and brown) on Sunday, breakfast delayed one day due to flood in kitchen. no plug in bathroom sink (bought my own)bedside light did not work, over basin in bathroom didn,t, work only 2 coat hangers in wardrobe, reassured these defects would be rectified on Monday but were reported on Friday evening
Review 124:The mattress was very odd and uncomforatable. The kettle only worked if you held the switch down.
Review 125:A building with a lot of individual character. Also friendly hard-working staff. They are doing their best with an old building and probably on a shoe-string. Some thought has gone into the decor - it doesn't look "corporate".
Review 126:Locating the car park was a bit tricky as it is on a different road and the car park did not have visible sign-age. The hotel is clean but needs refurbishment
Review 127:Friendly staff and the breakfast was nice. The room was also clean
Review 128:Bathrooms a little tired looking but the Management is making on-going improvements.
Review 129:Good pub and a great Mexican Restaurant are part of the hotel. Central location in Hythe and easy access to Tunnel, Port and sea.
Review 130:In need of updating and decorating, shower in room broken but clean and comfortable enough.
Review 131:Location is brilliant, right in the middle of Hythe high street and staff polite and pleasant
Review 132:The hotel needs some serious investment. The rooms are small (but OK) but need decorating and some work on old-fashioned bathrooms.
Review 133:Hythe is a nice little town with a good selection of pubs and restaurants. The Swan is ideally located to exploit these
Review 134:Day time staff shocking English skills very poor understanding
Review 135:The evening staff where fantastic, morning/day stuff leave a lot to be desired!!! Very poor English skills they did not understand much of anything!!
Review 136:No toilet tissue. We had to leave at 6.45 and requested a breakfast for 6.30. This was accepted and was told it would be left outside our room. It wasn't.
Review 137:Comfy bed that's it!!!
Review 138:The hotel is basic and could do with being updated. The shower was poor due to low pressure and not enough hot water.
Review 139:He hotel was a fantastic price, booked last minute for £30 including a reasonable breakfast and free parking.
Review 140:Cleanliness poor. Carpets worn, stained and dirty as was bathroom floor covering. Dusty. Had to ask for loo roll. Musty smell in corridors. Needs makeover urgently.
Review 141:Location good. Bed linen clean. Accepted dogs. Good buffet breakfast
