Reviews for The Castle Hotel

Review 1:We've stayed here before a couple of years back and I can't fault the place. Staff are great, the room was warm, clean and comfortable and..dogs are allowed. We didn't have an evening meal there but, the Full Breakfast is excellent. It's in a picturesque, central, village location which is a 5 minute drive from Hythe town centre. We are looking forward to returning soon.

Review 2:We came for New Years and had an absolutely lovely time. The room was great- seriously comfy beds, a fab shower all a nice size and very clean. Tea and coffee facilities in the room happily topped up when we drank all our tea to fix the new year hangover. The pub itself is great too, with reasonably priced drinks and very friendly staff. Breakfast was delicious. Location is close enough to town and beach, about a 10min stroll to both.

Review 3:Filthy room would not take a shower so dirty door handle coming off on bedroom door bin not emptied mould on bathroom floor tiny room for 2 people.

Review 4:Food was surprisingly ok

Review 5:Nothing, all excellent !

Review 6:Friendly family business. Cosy & relaxed, very clean & tidy. Lovely village, friendly locals. Love dogs. Food freshly prepared and excellent (recommend the mushroom fajitas). Delicous & huge breakfast. We've checked in at 10.30 pm. Prices very reasonable - we're from Yorkshire! So convenient for Chunnel. Our 1st choice for trips to France 5 x a year.

Review 7:My room would have benefited from refurbishment, and had a difficult sash window that kept falling open until I got the hang of fastening it! Management were sorting out a problem with hot water while I was there, and this was fine, but the central heating was far too hot for my taste. Also had to be shown a special technique for flushing the loo - that was a first!

Review 8:Nice staff, clean room, cosy communal areas, good breakfast. Very good hospitality tray in the room. Able to park nearby, although the Green was rather congested when I was there. Was certainly value for money for my one night stay.

Review 9:It was the first time we stayed having eaten a few times at the pub. There was an awful stench on the landing. Although we read that the rooms were tired, the cleaner is having an uphill struggle for hygiene e.g the carpets were stained - a good steam clean everywhere would help but why not rip out the carpets and refresh ? We won't stay again until we hear of a refurb which is a pity as we stay monthly in the area.

Review 10:the staff were very friendly and service orientated. The food is always good.

Review 11:Our early start meant that we had to miss breakfast. Hotel gave us packed lunch, but that wasn't really what we wanted for breakfast. It would be very much appreciated if the hotel could offer a continental breakfast in the room.

Review 12:The hotel is well-located for the Channel Tunnel - only about 10-15 minutes drive. It's set in a pleasant location. Being dog-friendly is a big bonus.

Review 13:Hotel a little bit tired, very much to our liking but not sure if I'd recommend to a friend due to that.

Review 14:Staff were extremely friendly, a very good first impression which didn't change during our stay and will definitely go back.

Review 15:Everywhere filthy. Tables dirty and greasy. Wallpaper falling off ceiling in bar. Room walls plaster falling off. Beds had failed springs, saggy and very uncomfortable. Curtains in bedroom and restaurant literally falling apart. Whole place needs redecorating and a good clean up and overhaul. New carpets and curtains required throughout.

Review 16:Nothing, except for friendly host.

Review 17:Location as a stop over to use the Tunnel Very friendly staff and extremely helpful in providing a packed lunch in place of a breakfast as we had a very early start Good food and beer!

Review 18:The breakfast wasn't very nice, which put us off having a meal there.

Review 19:The staff & locals were very friendly and we loved the area, very quaint.

Review 20:The shower in the bathroom was very small and you couldn't eeally move comfortably

Review 21:The staff were very helpful and the room was cute and comfortable

Review 22:Bit tired in places, could do with some tlc.

Review 23:Good location for Euro tunnel, good price, staff provide a packed sandwich and drink if you have an early departure. Nice touch.

Review 24:The shower was very awkward! Something's like carpets looked tired. Wifi some places and two steps away not

Review 25:The people were very pleasant. Food good the village charming. Close to Dover coming via ferry . Comfortable bed.

Review 26:Shower head had a small amount of black mould on it

Review 27:Excellent service, Bedroom and hotel very clean. Staff brilliant. Breakfast outstanding. would definafely recommend this hotel. Outstanding value for money

Review 28:breakfast was very poor quality skipped it next morning. hotel needs to be cleaner dirty behind toilet system where it has leaked plus smelly and a basket chair breaking up that catches on clothes, had to hunt for plug socket wont rec'd hotel.

Review 29:the area was pretty and clean

Review 30:No complaints whatsoever. Hardly the hotel's fault that it's a stiff climb back up the hill from Hythe! A local reliable taxi firm easily solved that problem!

Review 31:Friendly staff, all necessary facilities. Very comfortable beds. Lovely old building with a charisma all of its own.

Review 32:Nothing at all.

Review 33:When we arrived late stage were very welcoming and we had a sneaky drink from the bar. Room was very clean and comfortable and it's perfect for catching the Euro Tunnel. Would definitely stay there again

Review 34:I couldn't get the shower temperature and speed both right.

Review 35:Second time we have been and still impressed with the value for money. Staff extremely helpful and polite. Food is lovely.

Review 36:Great food, very pleasant staff, friendly locals, lovely quiet village location. Dog friendly. In fact we enjoyed our stay so much we stayed an extra night.

Review 37:We stayed in a twin room and my bed was a little wobbly with a very soft mattress. I did sleep well though!

Review 38:Stayed here on numerous occasions before travelling to France via the Eurotunnel. We wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. Good food, good beer, good breakfast and warm ambiance with large beer garden for our doggy to mooch about in. Parking next to pub is very handy and Saltwood is a delightful village.

Review 39:we arrived late after a day trip to france, the owners and staff were very friendly. the bedroom had everything you could need. would definately come back again

Review 40:All decor very old. Window were filthy. Curtains in the "dining room" were filthy. Tables and place mats dirty. Mushrooms for breakfast were like rubber and scrambled egg laced with tons of salt and pepper. Way over priced for the awful standard of accommodation.

Review 41:I was missing a sink plug. Also, the shower was not very powerful...the water dribbled out.

Review 42:Lovelybvillage pub/hotel. Friendly staff. Very comfortable

Review 43:Room small for 2 additional beds, shower just a dribble of water, the whole place could do with a good clean

Review 44:Good location, friendly staff. Good value

Review 45:Leaky radiator & wet floor in bedroom (electric radiator provided on second night). Toilet could be cleaner. Rear entry very cluttered.

Review 46:Food was good, staff and locals helpful, welcoming and friendly, warm pub atmosphere, adequate parking, inexpensive.

Review 47:Hotel really needs refurbishment so a little tired looking but this was reflected in the value for money. Ideal for a stop over trip to France.

Review 48:Friendly staff, excellent breakfast

Review 49:When set against the price and the service - there was nothing not to like.

Review 50:Lovely location, extremely pleasant staff, comfortable beds, good food, exceptional service, and excellent value for money. Nothing appears to be too much trouble. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable overnight stay before crossing the channel.

Review 51:Room was in need of refurbishment, tap loose in the bathroom and carpet very worn and there was an awful smell in the corridor outside the room. Ordered some prawns in the bar which were nice but the garlic bread tasted awful and had a funny smell. Breakfast was ok but the garlic bread put me off!

Review 52:Staff were friendly

Review 53:A little bit of noise from the pub downstairs but it wasn't loud and didn't go on late

Review 54:Good distance to Lympne Castle where we visited for a wedding. Decent breakfast. Very friendly staff always making sur everything was ok.

Review 55:Excellent location only a couple of miles from the channel tunnel. Staff were very helpful, we had to leave before breakfast was served so they made us up a packed lunch to take. Good food and drink also. Well equipped rooms, with tea and coffee.

Review 56:Decor is very tired. Room carpet had a huge hole in it & signs of spilt bleach. Mattress was far too soft & spongy, not ideal for back sufferers. En-suit toilet heavily stained with limescale.

Review 57:Lovely location, friendly breakfast staff, nice breakfast. Very quite room. Good value for money if you like a soft mattress & can turn a blind eye to the decor.

Review 58:Nothing

Review 59:Stayed at The Castle prior to my sons wedding at Lympne Castle, can't fault it. Staff were very friendly, had a very good meal and a good nights sleep. Staff were very accommodating with regards our return to the hotel the following night.

Review 60:The room we were in the carpet needed replacing and the plumping plus the shower was terrible. The windows were wet and steamed up on the inside so made the room a bit damp and cold. On the Sunday no bed made or tea making things were replaced. We did not like the dog begging while eating our breakfast. The seats in dinning room were stained and need recovering. Shame it could be made lovely.

Review 61:The staff were friendly and the location was good.

Review 62:The rooms need a little bit of renovation and the bed was too soft for us but ok for one night.

Review 63:Despite the rooms are above a pub you sleep well as it's silent (Wednesday night). The pub offers good food, the breakfast is fine as well. A small public park is close to go for a walk. Hythe, down at the coast, is a nice little town and the Castle hotel is 10min away from Folkstone. The hotel is away from any major road, you will not just step over it.

Review 64:Room was in severe need of decoration. Stains on carpets, damp stains on walls. Ventilator in bathroom was noisy, bedroom window rattled all night. Hot water in sink didnt work.

Review 65:Size of room was excellent 4 poster bed was comfy Food was of a good standard both dinner and breakfast. Staff were friendly. Pets were allowed, although we chose not to take ours.

Review 66:Car park is actually the village car park all be it next to the hotel. Can be a problem finding a space.

Review 67:We stayed here overnight before taking the Eurotunnel. It's a tenminute drive away. Good food, real ale, and a good nights sleep. Willuse them again.

Review 68:Shower in need of a good clean and water didn't run away! Bathroom door was broken, good chance of getting locked in!! and looking at guest book its been like that for a while. Room was cold and felt damp. Needs a bit of TLC.

Review 69:Staff very friendly, good food and location

Review 70:Our check in time was at 2 o clock but the wedding we were going to started at 2. I spoke to the owners about an earlier checking in and it wasn't a problem at all. Rooms were great and breakfast was lovely.

Review 71:hotel well placed in a picturesqe country village. vry near to the hythe and dymchurch coast.comfortable rooms good food and drink .excellent value for money.very pleasant staff.most enjoyable stay.

Review 72:Rooms a bit shabby (but clean), bathroom adequate though cramped, old sash window impossible to park in a venting position, bed rather small though comfortable.

Review 73:The setting on the village green was delightful and the warmth of our reception was very real. This is a village pub as well as hotel so there was a lively atmosphere, with "crib night" in progress. A good range of real local ales was on offer in the bar and I was invited to sample whichever I felt like, so finding one that suited me was easy. We ate there and the food was of good quality but of enormous proportions, so couldn't actually eat it all! Staff were brilliant and the chef came out to chat with everyone so it was a very friendly place to stay. For us, being a short drive from the ferryport and facing a long drive home, it made a great site to stay overnight.

Review 74:DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is NOT a hotel!!!!!!!! It is a pub with rooms. We stayed as we needed to access the Tunnel very early. The pub was very noisy all evening and late into the night- country lock-in seemed to be going on! We were unable to sleep- it was a Wednesday evening! As we were leaving at 04.30, we asked for a packed breakfast. We were given 2 sandwiches and 2 small bottles of juice! There was no fruit or extra sandwiches, although we asked for them! Only crisps, which we did not want. The room was very poor quality and the bathroom was horrible, although the shower worked! Lots of noise from the toilet all night and from the toilet in the next room. Plumbing is antique! Would advise anyone who wants a decent place to stay to avoid at all costs. Would never return. Awful experience altogether.

Review 75:Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Review 76:Room far too small and badly ventilated. Decor very tatty. They shouldreally relegate the room 'Chilmer' to storeroom status.

Review 77:Very close to euro tunnel so great for a one night stopover. Staffwere lovely. Evening meal was great pub grub and brekkie waslovely, nice country pub in general full of interesting locals, dog andchild friendly

Review 78:The car park seems to be used by everyone, so it can be a trial to park if you return mid evening.

Review 79:Staff are very friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and the breakfast very tasty. Altogether a very pleasant stay, no pretentions just a good cosy feel to the place.

Review 80:Bed being propped up on a piece of wood which, when you turned over in bed it fell off! Sheets that were not big enough for the bed. Badly stained carpet in bedroom. Bathroom in very poor state. As our room was above the kitchen you could hear the extractor fans which were left running all night making it difficult to sleep, if at all! The whole hotel is in need of a makeover.

Review 81:Excellent food, staff were very good, did what they could to rectify problems.(did turn fans off for 2 nights) Good location.

Review 82:Room needed a smartening up a bit but served the purpose for a one night stopover.

Review 83:Excellent and good value food. A truly dog friendly place. Really friendly and helpful staff.

Review 84:A very warm welcome. Lovely traditional country inn on the village green. Very comfortable room and very peaceful. Excellent breakfast. 15 minutes walk into Hythe (be aware of a steep hill back again though).

Review 85:Whilst everywhere is clean the rooms, and corridors leading to them, need refurbishing.

Review 86:Originally we chose the Castle as it is one of the few hotels in Hythe that accepts pets and has good parking. The staff are very friendly and our breakfasts were excellent. Our room, with four poster bed, was enormous with a view across the village green. Although this is a proper village pup on a fairly busy (at times) road there was no noise and we slept very well.

Review 87:Lack of staff around when checking outl We had to deal with the cleaner, who knew nothing.

Review 88:We were welcomed warmly on arrival and shown to our room, whichoverlooked the village green and was perfectly adequate, if basic. Wehad dinner downstairs in the bar and the food was superb, with a lovelyatmosphere and friendly locals at the bar.

Review 89:Rooms desperately need re-decorating, we had 2 rooms, both had stained carpets and furnishings, they also smelt a little mouldy

Review 90:Lovely village setting, lovely character pub with nice gardens. Food was good and staff were pleasant and helpful

Review 91:Room was tiny, the bed was only 3/4. Everything seemed grubby and like it needed a good clean eg got a drink from the bar and glass was covered in lipstick, glasses and cutlery at breakfast were not clean, hallway carpets were filthy, shower looked dirty.

Review 92:Location was good, we stayed for a couple of nights as we were going to a wedding nearby, it served the purpose but I wouldn't book it for a weekend away. Staff were friendly. Breakfast included.

Review 93:Hotel was very run down and needs to be refurbished urgently. Generally very untidy, things stored in the passage ways, mattresses under beds, unsightly.

Review 94:Location on a village green. Comfortable bed

Review 95:Room was clean but décor a little tired

Review 96:Good breakfast , we ate there in the evening also, good choice menu good value for money . In easy reach ferry and train . Nice area

Review 97:When I arrived I was asked what time I would like breakfast and booked for 9 am. When I arrived down the next morning at that time the receptionist was very embarrassed to tell me the restaurant manager had closed the restaurant and gone home. The rest of the staff were very unhappy about the situation and apologised profusely. Never had anything like that before in many years of staying in hotels

Review 98:Location

Review 99:Room very tired. Carpet worn and stained. Needs updating.

Review 100:Good for a one night stopover before the euro tunnel. Staff lovely Food fine. Price fine.

Review 101:Friendly staff, tea/coffee making facilities in room, good pub food in restaurant & excellent cooked breakfast. A typical english village pub, with rooms above.

Review 102:The rooms and bathrooms were large for a century old hotel but the furnishing needed to be updated and carpets needed cleaning.

Review 103:The staff were all very friendly and willing to help with any requests. We stayed for three nights and eat dinner each everning. The food was good value with a large selection on the menu.

Review 104:The whole place is now really overdue a good makeover, deep clean and refurbishment.

Review 105:The food particularly and the fact that it is dog friendly. Bedding clean, towels clean, bathroom clean. We have stayed here several times and would do again.

Review 106:rooms a bit tired, may be a makeover due however really clean and looked after.

Review 107:loved the friendliness of both the staff and the locals, chatty and inclusive and nothing too much trouble. we were with family ( adults) and ate in the hotel in the evening , the meals were gorgeous.. hot fresh and very very reasonable ( 5 of us £40) locked ourselves out after our function and were rescued by the locals! planning another visit!

Review 108:Awful smell in hallway leading to bedrooms.

Review 109:We needed a stopover close to Channel Tunnel for an early start and The Castle provides that. When pub knew we would be arriving after kitchen closed they kindly offered to have sandwiches ready for us. Very reasonable price.

Review 110:On this occasion I had rib-eye steak - it was very poor value for the price being small, thin and very grisly.

Review 111:Nice pub, ideally located near Channel Tunnel. We have stayed at the Castle twice and on both occasion the staff have been very.friendly and attentive. Food is normally well cooked and very nice

Review 112:All excellent, staff, breakfast, bed had the best sleep for weeks.

Review 113:The toilet in the room didn't flush. Was raised on the day but not attended to by the following day when we left

Review 114:Could do with a make over in places....getting a little tired

Review 115:Good Food, Well Stocked Bar. Oldie-Worldly Charm. Great Location.

Review 116:Final bill was more than I thought it should have been

Review 117:Whole place in need of some renovation

Review 118:Lovely bed

Review 119:Good location. Friendly staff .Confortable bed. Excellent breakfast

Review 120:Extremely friendly staff, very welcoming.. Great full English breakfast and not in any hurry for you to Vacate your table.

Review 121:Location and staff.

Review 122:Had to wait for breakfast. Dining area not very clean.

Review 123:Location near to wedding reception we were attending.

Review 124:Superb stop for the Dover ferries

Review 125:The food and friendly staff

Review 126:Friendly staff.

Review 127:Décor was tired and needs refreshing.

Review 128:Convenience for Shuttle. Evening meal was good.

Review 129:Excessively noisy water system.

Review 130:This place has character and charm. In a very nice setting.
