Reviews for YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass
Review 1:Nothing major but, need better lighting in bed rooms and lounges. Green bulbs are very poor when trying to study maps Duvets too small for bed width and needed sink light for shaving
Review 2:Staff are very experienced and friendly. Excellent ambassadors Facilities were good Excellent drying room Good number of electric sockets in bedrooms
Review 3:This has to be one of the most stunning hostel locations I've ever been to, as well as feeling constantly dwarfed by nature the staff here make you feel constantly welcome and comfortable! no qualms with this place!
Review 4:However we felt the self catering end (a long walk from the main part - good if you want to add to your 'steps') wan't as well cared for. We had run out of washing up liquid and it took more than 24 hours for more to arrive. Although were asked for kitchen towel to be stocked up it never got done, (4 days).
Review 5:The location was excellent for the Snowdon mountain range. We didn't go up because the conditions were not right for us, snow and strong winds You really feel you are almost in the mountains The open access throughout the day was very good so if you arrive early no problem. If you don't want to go out, you can stay in and enjoy their food and drink. The staff were friendly and very helpful. the place was well maintained
Review 6:- Parking situation... maybe get some deals or badges for the car park opposite. - very thin walls, had a very load group next to us - I know its a hostel but i hate bunk beds maybe a bit more expensive rooms with normal single beds
Review 7:Staff was very nice and super helpful when we asked for alternatives to hiking. Self catering area is an amazing idea, but very dirty and maybe people could buy locks and lock of their stuff if you would have lockable draws ... we didn't leave our stuff in the kitchen
Review 8:Parking can be a little tough. theres a pay car park across the road if you don't get one of the free ones. In the middle of nowhere so move on once you've done all the trails in the area. Check in at 4pm!
Review 9:Awesome spot for climbing mt snowdon (the best place to stay). Great Facilities.. Nice clean rooms. Dry room for your wet gear after hiking.. Common room. Table tennis and pool table. Good people staying and working there
Review 10:No draught beer. Packed lunch (can be ordered) could be bigger in size. Beds are ok, but not that comfortable for taller people. Towel should be provided and included in room charge.
Review 11:If you want to climb Snowdon, there is no better place to start from. Direct access to 2 of the tracks up hill, bus stop to the other paths just outside. Yes, there is no mobile phone signal for calls and internet or wi-fi, but... it is great, if you want to just relax for weekend, switch off and leave the rush behind. Place without people starring onto their smartphones, but playing 'offline' games together instead. They serve food, which is quite all right, lovely drinks etc.. everything one can need. Except for internet, which you will soon realize is not that important ;)
Review 12:The food on NYE was very expensive for what was available/quality. It was a self serve buffet which meant there was not much left by the time we got there.
Review 13:Clean rooms, friendly staff and perfect location for walking up Snowdon.
Review 14:Parking was limited and £10 a day was expensive. Could there be a reduced charge for YHA customers?
Review 15:The place was warm and the staff were very helpful. It was easy to settle in and feel at home.
Review 16:People who share common areas such as kitchen do not clean after themselves and do not recycle - it would be better to put a huge poster what is to be recycled. And ecologic washing up liquid would be nice too.
Review 17:Location and stillness of the place.
Review 18:Showers were disappointing. Not enough water pressure / flow. Leaking windows in room.
Review 19:Excellent location, friendly staff, good food. Hostel is clean and comfortable.
Review 20:No mobile phone coverage is ok IF there is wi-fi - there is none. These days there should be. It meant we had to leave early as friend needed to make urgent phone calls / Skype / emails to her family. Shame.
Review 21:Location.
Review 22:Friendly staff, clean room, superb location to local facilities (hills, pub, local town). Lack of wifi refreshing!! Staff called my mobile number provided ahead of stay to warn of local road closures, and traffic issues, and offered to stay on shift until our arrival. Wonderful service provided!!
Review 23:No mobile phone reception and no wifi, so no coms at all apart from pay phone. Meals weren't beautiful or delicious, but functional.
Review 24:Friendly staff and warm welcome. Like the fact that you could get evening meal and breakfast. Price was very competitive.
Review 25:There could be a few more shared items in the self catering kitchen for travellers to use e.g. Salt, pepper, baking paper, cooking oil, ketchup, sugar, tea and coffee. These items are everyday house hold items that many people forget when they're travelling or don't bother to buy because they assume it will be there. No WiFi or phone service was a real hassel at times.
Review 26:The staff were really friendly and offered us advice on which mountain tracks to take according to our ability level. They while complex was very modern and clean and extremely functional.
Review 27:To quote our youngest (aged 7 years) as we spent Saturday evening playing board games and planning our adventure up Snowdon "this is the best weekend ever"
Review 28:The only down thing is that there is no phone signal or internet wifi but it is not the hostel's fault and it is a really minor fault
Review 29:I have been to many hostels in my life but never been to anyone like this one. It should be rated as a hotel. Excellent in all different areas, staff, location, cleanliness, value for money.
Review 30:Only thing I can say and it isn't a big problem... I like a fried egg with breakfast and when I asked the catering assistant he seemed very reluctant to make one and said it would take 10 minutes!
Review 31:Location and found it a friendly environment
Review 32:The shower could have done with being alot more powerful but that's the only point I could come up with!
Review 33:Excellent place, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Review 34:Our windows leaked and the bathroom also leaked but the rain was extraordinarily heavy. Perhaps just some provision of towels or something so we could mop it up. The bathroom was also freezing as no heater in there and the shower a trickle of water which isn't really what you want when cold and damp after a day out! I don't know if that's just generic to hostels though as a water saving measure. We would go back if we wanted cheap accommodation I'm that area again but might pick a different time of year!
Review 35:We are not generally hostellers so this was a new experience for us and obviously it should be reviewed against hostels not hotels as the expectation of what you get is different. We thought the location was great, sadly we didn't get to walk up snowdonia or see much of the immediate area due to poor weather but you can tell that in better conditions it would be superb view wise and get next to tracks up snowdonia. Staff were great and the drying room a necessity!
Review 36:2 off the 3 members of staff that I spoke to we're not very helpful. One had a bad attitude and was unhelpful. I I could hear a lot of noise from the room I stayed in.
Review 37:The location was great. The facilities were ok. It offered a bar, pool table, ping pong table, good relaxing seating/eating areas.
Review 38:Staff was very friendly, Beds were comfortable, and everything was exceptional. I left my Kindle e-reader by accident, and I was notified that it was left behind. I was unable to pick it up, so they sent it via mail.
Review 39:It is a youth hostel and there are plenty of guests that prefer self catering. The self catering facilities seem an afterthought, miles from main guest area and sled catering dining area is awful. Far too small and dimly lit.
Review 40:Location , staff are friendly, good pricing
Review 41:Nice friendly greeting. Next day's outing and weather discussed which was very welcome and determined preparation needed. Local eateries recommended, opted for the curry house :-) Good breakfast, which was much needed as the weather made the Snowdon summit walk demanding. Lovely hot chocolate and carrot cake at the end of the day.
Review 42:Nothing negative really, but it is like a pub, so not as cosy to sit in the evening as some other more traditional hostels. There was music on all the time and I prefer the quiet.
Review 43:Sitting outside sharing a pot of tea while the sun went down and the view of the mountains opposite was wonderful. (We were very fortunate to have great weather.)
Review 44:Bit noisy from around 6, but people pretty thoughtful on the whole
Review 45:Fantastic location, lovely staff, pity about the weather! Would definitely come back
Review 46:I thought this youth hostel was more like a lovely hotel. The bar and reception area were very stylish, buzzy with walkers and although we are retired we found it welcoming and interesting. Would we stay again - yes !
Review 47:warm and friendly atmosphere, perfect base for climbing and walking.private en suite twin room was great.staff are lovely and very helpful.views are perfect.Better than a b and b!
Review 48:Could have done with a bigger car park for residents as it was pot luck finding a space!
Review 49:The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are modern and well kept. Perfect location for walkers. £3 Coffee and Cake deal!
Review 50:The kitchen staff were very rude and we waited over an hour for food that was practically inedible. Not good after a long day walking!
Review 51:Some of the staff were lovely, good facilities and great location
Review 52:It was brilliant from top to bottom staff couldnt do enough rooms are nice and clean food and drink perfect had a brilliant time will definatly be back again
Review 53:There were times I could not place my order for my evening meal until late in the day as they have a tendency to cater for groups first and indervals second which was a bit annoying especially after a hard day's hiking.
Review 54:The location was superb, facilities excellent and staff friendly and helpful.
Review 55:I had booked to stay while taking part in Man vs Mountain. I wasn't expecting the hostel to be in the mountains and thought it was closer to Llanberis. But the view from the hostel,is just out of this world - and worth it! Stunning scenery. By chance I had booked it when the Tour of Britain passed through and the King of The Mountain points stage was right outside the hostel! Worth hanging about to see.
Review 56:Scenery, atmosphere. Excellent facilities. Good food, good ales, Scrabble, dry room, local info. We had 4 person room for us and our kids with en-suite which was 2 bunk beds.
Review 57:Nothing. It's perfect for the money.
Review 58:I couldn't believe how different it looked when I arrived to when I last stayed in September 2012. The staff said it has had a big refurb. Well I must say that it was money very well spent! Amazing staff, rooms, food and facilities. I'll be back for sure.
Review 59:Our only minor dislike was the shower with a button you have to keep pushing to keep it on.
Review 60:Location perfect for climbing snowdon. Staff incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about walks around/up snowdon.
Review 61:will be better when they finally get broadband
Review 62:Very helpful staff feeding us after we arrived quite late Nice ensuite 6 bed room with very good facilities Decent food and breakfast Location is amazing
Review 63:Parking was ok for us (we were very lucky on both days) but very limited. The paying car park across the road is good to have but still isn't enough at times. No phone signal in the mountains (that's the way it is) but no wifi available, which was a shame especially considering the phone signal limitation.
Review 64:Great place, very attractively priced. Basic but clean and offers most of what you need. Staff were all very friendly and smily. Great location if you come for the mountain views and want to hike. Not so much for anything else as you are high in the mountains! Staff were knowledgeable of local hiking routes. Good food and bar. We had a 4 bunk-bed en-suite family room which was great.
Review 65:Graham forewarned us about the lack of soundproofing and voices did carry at bedtime but it didn't spoil our stay overalls mountain
Review 66:Very friendly and helpful staff. Real buzz about the place. Who knew hostels had bars & restaurants these days?!
Review 67:No wifi or signal till up the mountain!
Review 68:Really lose to the pyg and miners track for climbing Snowdon and the refurb is fantastic! My group of all ladies over 38 except 2 were all impressed! Well done
Review 69:My stay was simply awesome. Staff was really courteous and they ensured that we don't face any issue what so ever. Location of this hostel is excellent. Perfect after a hard day climb
Review 70:lack of wifi for checking on details - ridiculous but we get used to checking for details on our phones -
Review 71:Great location for walking and no wifi so great to be 'free'
Review 72:noisy group of young men who kept talking loudly and continually opening a nearby door which then kept banging very loudly from 10 pm - midnight when we were trying to sleep! Introducing some "noise" related house rules (after 9pm as children are trying to sleep!) and replacing the slow close mechanism on the offending door with a better version should help considerable
Review 73:location unbeatable! Clean, tidy and good value for money Car could be left in loading bay all night and following day while we climbed up and down Snowdon (although we are aware there are very limited spaces and we were lucky to get one!)
Review 74:Nothing
Review 75:I haven't stated in a youth hostel for many years. So I was extremely impressed with penypass. It's clear they have rout money into this hostel. Great staff, service and food. Ideal spot for yomping up Snowdon or taking a route behind for the Glyderau. Highly recommended
Review 76:Very welcoming, friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable lounge area with books and games. En-suite room was all that was required - no frills but sufficient. Great breakfast.
Review 77:If your staying a few nights there's not a lot to do in the evenings...a movie night or something/ quiz night would of been good! Parking was terrible at peak season!
Review 78:Most staff where brilliant so so helpful location was brilliant and the rooms where very clean!!
Review 79:We were due to arrive late so called en route. First person I spoke said she couldn't help and we would be locked out if we arrived after 10pm so good luck!! Eventually I phoned back and fortunately spoke to a much more helpful person.. he let me settle the bill over the phone and left the key for us when we got there, phew! Sleeping in the car overnight with my friend and my son would have been less than ideal :)
Review 80:Amazing location, fantastic setting!! Great communal kitchen.
Review 81:We were really impressed with the hostel. A clean comfortable bed, immaculate showers with hot water and a great kitchen. Colleagues were helpful and the location was stunning.
Review 82:Really a very minor issue is if you try to go to sleep early you may be woken by the fire doors slamming as people mover around.
Review 83:It would be hard to find any fault with the facilities. I had the evening meal starter and main for £9.95 really good value.
Review 84:Unfortunately, there is no internet access at the youth hostel. You may get a mobile access when you start your tracks up to the mountains, but not before... But: Actually it all affect the atmosphere in the hostel in a positive way, more chat instead of social media! ;-)
Review 85:It is a perfect place to start several hiking tracks into the Snowdonian mountains. The Staff is extremly friendly, helps out for everything. The rooms are very clean, not too small. There are a lot of nice places to sit down, relax and have some nice food (which is quite cheap in comparision to London for example). Thanks a lot for everything!
Review 86:Breakfast would have been nicer if it was local and grilled but it was fine and pleasantly served. The accommodation could have done with soft closing doors on corridors as it got quite noisy. These are minor things we had a great time :)
Review 87:The location and facilities were excellent, great to have a restaurant and bar on site. The staff were extremely friendly and the room was clean and in great condition. Great value for money, good pack lunch service available!!
Review 88:Breakfast could have had a bit more variety for hot foods and maybe porridge and more fruits. maybe cashback available as well as we didn't have any coins to use for the laundry facilities. Also the drying room was full so our clothes didn't dry very well. Other than that it was very good!
Review 89:It was clean and simple, great facilities!
Review 90:The first night we stayed the staff was really rude not helpful but I have to say the day the staff changed it was flawless. Also no phone connection and no wifi???? We are in 21st century and having been traveling as mum with 2 children it is very inconvenient.
Review 91:The location you really can't beat it's stunning!!!
Review 92:Parking space - too restricted Arrival time for checking - too late (17:00)
Review 93:Good atmosphere Good staff Good facilities (kitchen and dining area - loved it!!)
Review 94:Location is the best thing! Right at the start of Pyg track. YHA did a remarkable efforts to make old building as much as convenient as any modern house but respecting the historical taste of it. Public kitchen well equiped with a quality utensils and high end worktops and stoves. Loved everything!
Review 95:No phone signal or wifi. Not normally an issue but if you are hill walking or taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge you want to let people know you are safe etc. There is a public phone but its expensive and barely audible.
Review 96:Excellent location for Snowdon and a welcome rest spot for some weary Three Peak Challengers. Friendly staff, great food and excellent value for money
Review 97:Wait for food in the evening was over an hour, even though it was only basic lasagne, curry, burger etc. could do with changing this to buffet style as the breakfast was as this was much better.
Review 98:Great atmosphere, location and comfort, couldn't believe that it was a youth hostel. The breakfast was fab and great choice of drinks/snacks at the well stocked bar.
Review 99:Was perfect location for PYG/Miners climb. Very clean, modern with everything we needed. First stay as an adult in YHA and will def look to stay in a hostel again.
Review 100:It was crowded and a bit expensive. Self catering kitchen too small for numbers using it. Breakfast not tasty, mass produced.
Review 101:the setting is beautiful.
Review 102:Showers... they need to stay on longer & the pressure needs to be a bit more, other than that can't fault it one little bit!
Review 103:Fantastic area, staff are really nice, perfect place to stay for a couple of nights, would go back again!
Review 104:Unfortunately the 6 bed dorm we stayed in had a ceiling problem!!! The ceiling dripped water most of the night!! A little bit annoying! And unfortunately the water dripped most of the night in to a back pack!! Very wet belongings! We did speak to reception who was very apologetic but admitted he knew about the problem!! And said they haven't got the funds to repair the roof! A great shame.
Review 105:Location, everything really
Review 106:I had made the reservation some 6 months ahead for two nights. On arrival I was told that they would need me to move rooms for the second night and that i had to vacate my room in the morning. this meant I had to change my plans. Could not have breakfast the first morning as there was two large groups being served and I had to leave before they were done. Real issue with parking particularly on the Saturday afternoon
Review 107:location
Review 108:No Wifi and no phone signal - come on its not rocket science and you have a pay phone on site so you have a landline - why not wifi and a booster? Also self catering kitchen is poorly located to those wishing to self cater if your in the main building.
Review 109:Polite and respectful staff with excellent knowledge and advice. Very clean and well organised and would recommend.
Review 110:Toilet seat and sink tap was broken. Shower is not comfortable to use.
Review 111:Hostel is in the best place that I could ever find. Staff was really friendly and helpful.
Review 112:It was very difficult to find a place to park since the parking lot was completely full and there are no places reserved for guests. No internet facilities.
Review 113:Location, atmosphere, view, bar, breakfast
Review 114:doing three peaks, on track until this point no parking avaialble here or at the car park, staff had very poor customer skills and offered no assisatnce or advice, booking.com advertises parking available, they have no idea who is using the car park we had three rooms booked but no car park space available, parked in a staff CP space not marked or signed only offer of advice just kept repeating "cant leave it there" very disappointing, obvious they have the demand so dont need any manners.
Review 115:location, but will not book again no car park space, needs to be advertised on booking .com as no car parking , 4 people failed TPC in 24 hrs due to this and lack of assistance was disgusting when paying £250 9 people , 3 rooms, 1 minibus
Review 116:Inconsiderate family arriving late putting lights on after the others in dormitory had gone to sleep. Noisily unpacking, coming & going several times each time flashing the lights on and off. A shame some people are so selfish
Review 117:Wonderful staff, excellent location, fabulous hostel.
Review 118:Little parking very busy Bunks instead of twin beds which I thought I had booked from picture on line
Review 119:Location... The building... The interior... The ensuite
Review 120:The female staff member on reception could have been a bit more helpful and pleasant. We paid a lot of money for 2 nights, but couldn't stay the second night as sleeping / room conditions were awful. Maybe just not used to sleeping on bunk beds now, in a room smaller than a prison cell with a broken window.
Review 121:The location for walking was brilliant. A decent bottle of Rioja at reasonable price.
Review 122:- the only minor downside was the food was a bit basic but there were lots of nice pubs around the area
Review 123:- location is the awesome, the tracks start pretty much in the car park opposite - staff very friendly - for a youth hostel was very good quality, clean, comfortable beds, cheap, all facilities need
Review 124:No phone or wifi signals, but not surprising when you look out of the window.
Review 125:Friendly people, excellent starting point for walking snowdonia, comfy, quiet night.
Review 126:Parking can be expensive if you don't manage to get one of the 8 free spaces.
Review 127:You couldn't ask for a better location to stay in Snowdonia. Easy access to the Miners and Pyg tracks. Friendly helpful staff. Good food, clean, good facilities.
Review 128:Nothing it was just perfect! Thanks to the lovely staff at the YHA who welcomed us even though we arrived late !!
Review 129:The location was right next to the paths to snowdon we stunning views of snowdonia We parked for free all weekend and their was a lovely atmosphere in the YH A
Review 130:Draughty windows made bathroom cold in double room, also poor shower so ended up using shared shower facilities!! Flippant response on checking in when asked about bike storage!
Review 131:The over active teenagers in the room above, although after complaining at reception, they were better behaved.
Review 132:The room was really comfortable and loved the en suite facilities. The self catering area had everything you needed.
Review 133:Not enough space for food service when really busy in the bar area.
Review 134:Friendly staff in an excellent location for the mountains. Good food reasonably priced with a variety of bar drinks.
