Reviews for Globe Hotel
Review 1:Hotel manager completely unsympathetic that we were there for a family funeral so was unwilling to be flexible with our booking. The rooms were a complete joke. Squeaky floors, completely dated beds/sheets/towels/decor. You literally can't imagine it. The entire bathroom floods when taking a shower so you'll be standing in water that is swishing around the cistern/base of the toilet attached to the floor. Had to prop my window open with our tea spoons! Another actual hotel in the area beat their price for our second night (and included breakfast which globe didn't) so we just didn't go back. We essentially paid £120 NOT to stay there. Absolute nightmare.
Review 2:Location was central.
Review 3:The bathroom was the smallest I have ever been in. It was 2m square. The shower flooded the whole thing as the plughole only drained intermittently. The sink was tiny and you had to contort to brush your teeth. There was a massive draught from the window which was awful on a windy January night. It wasn't the actual window itself, rather it was that the window and the wall were separated and no matter what we did the draught persisted. In the end we hung a jacket on the curtain pole in an effort to block the worst of it. You were not allowed to eat in the room upon pain of an additional cleaning charge. Unheard of in a hotel. The bedside lights were controlled by a switch which was connected to the main light so there was only one mode: off or bright. Not exactly mood lighting. There was no hairdryer. The divan bed kept separating into its individual beds. The only evening meals available in the restaurant were Indian. The view was of a brick wall.
Review 4:The location was central and the room was an acceptable size.
Review 5:No complaints but need a shower mat in the shower cause my mother almost fell over.
Review 6:Very welcoming from the moment we walked in the door from the moment we left.
Review 7:We were so cold! No heating all night and morning and 2c outside! The bathroom although clean was made of plastic Porto cabin material but all worked and kept us clean. The front door slams really loud and disturbs you
Review 8:Stunning decor, bed was extremely comfy, our room had a self contained kitchen!
Review 9:See hotel swap above
Review 10:Great location which we knew as we used to live in Colchester, although we weren't heading into town that night. We felt a bit duped however, as we weren't actually given a room in the Globe but in the much less fancy Star Anglia next door. I wouldn't have booked the Star Anglia for the price if I had known. Very clean rooms though.
Review 11:Dirty linen on bed with paint spots clearly apparent. A very flat lumpy pillow. Plstic portable shower easy to flood.
Review 12:Prompt response from staff for corrections of failings
Review 13:En suite facilities were very small and cramped. Heaters appeared to be switched off for a lot of the time and the room as a result got quite chilly. Reception was in adjoining Star Angell Hotel which caused confusion in locating hotel.
Review 14:Good comfortable hotel 10 mins from railway station am15 mins from town centre. Bed was comfortable. Reasonable value for money compared to other hotels in the town.
Review 15:Water from the shower was getting to the toilet which was not very good. Behind desk there was dusty, notied when I dropped my earing there.
Review 16:The members of staff are warm and afford to converse with me which makes you feel valued and welcome.
Review 17:Nothing in particular but the carpet wasn't the cleanest among other hotels. The life was weird to operate. A little of noise when neighbours shut their doors or speak in the corridor. Not all tv channels worked properely.
Review 18:Proximity to train station and a a nice park
Review 19:Could have used a little bedside lamp.
Review 20:Great location, character property, comfy bed, very quiet, clean, friendly and welcoming staff and plenty of parking. Coffee shop and restaurants nearby. You are close to the Dutch Quarter and Castle Park.
Review 21:Shower drain was blocked and water overflowed the whole bathroom, breakfast could have been a little better
Review 22:Nice hotel, friendly staff, comfortable bed
Review 23:Most staff were rude. We couldn't get a single night of sound sleep due to staff yelling at each other, or slamming doors all over the hotel.
Review 24:The room and beds were comfortable.
Review 25:cleaness is not impeccable: when i arrived i found an open bottle on the window and some paper. The bathroom in the other room had water on the floor. When I had the shower the water invaded the bathroom.
Review 26:the staff is nice, the rooms were very quiet, the bus station is just in front of the hotel
Review 27:The bathroom is leakage all the time. Another problem is the blockage, when I was taking showering, the water can't go down to the sewer immediately, I felt like standing I a pool!!! it was horrible!!!
Review 28:Stuffs here are friendly to sort out every problems for customers. Location is not bad, although it is a little bit far from town centre, bus station is very close. So it's not a big problem to get to town centre. And it's near North station, good position though. And it's convinient to get to many stores to buy stuffs.
Review 29:Toilet seat broken and toilet wouldn't flush properly. Had to pour buckets of water down toilet to flush it properly.
Review 30:Very friendly welcome on arrival. Good car parking
Review 31:tiny room nothing like the photos. no water pressure shower was a dribble. bathroom(if u could call it that) so small could hardly fit in it and I am not large. plug in sink could not be turned, got a member of staff to see it & he hit it with a spoon & said that's how u do it!!!. sash windows traffic so loud could hardly get to sleep....wot a dump. avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid & avoid again unless u like dumps
Review 32:nothing at all
Review 33:A little pricey for the standard of room especially considering breakfast was not included. Rooms on the main road can be noisy Room carpet way past it's best
Review 34:Good free parking Fairly convenient location
Review 35:Shower room quite small a bit of a squeeze as the toilet is in there, apart from tha nothing the room was perfect for our requirements
Review 36:Location was excellent for pubs restaurants take aways short walk all be it up a hill to town centre
Review 37:The only thing I can say about the first room was that the floor boards creaked every time you moved around the room. I would of liked a fan in both rooms being it was so warm.
Review 38:Arrived and was helped to the room. The whole hotel was very clean well lit nice car park attached to hotel, it was very secure there was tea and coffee making facilities a TV, Wifi and windows that could be opened and a telephone. During my stay some ignorant men came to stay in the room next door, who became abusive, after speaking to the manager he moved me to a much better and far more expensive room on the ground floor. Breakfast was very varied and enjoyable and the dining room was very clean and comfortable. Altogether I would highly recommend this as a good place to stay.
Review 39:After reading many reviews about the breakfast I decided to search nearby for breakfast instead of having it at the hotel. Found a pub called The Albert nearby.
Review 40:could have done with an iron in the rooms but they are available from reception so it's not a big problem
Review 41:Location is good staff are friendly and helpful
Review 42:All the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were never made to feel we were any trouble and they treated us like friends.
Review 43:It's very dirty. Very old. I booked for 2 nights and When I want toleave after the first night they don't refund me the cost of thesecond night so it's not a good place to stay.
Review 44:There is nothing I like in this Hotel.
Review 45:The room was just about adequate but the shower was awful, very slow and definitely needed replacing.
Review 46:The staff were very pleasant and the indian food in the restaurant was excellent.
Review 47:nothing negative
Review 48:good location, the interior of the hotel was well appointed with tiled floors and wooden bannisters. The room had all the basics needed for my one night stay. Soap and shower gel were a nice touch.
Review 49:Rules against eating in your room Breakfast was not worth the money, better options in town.
Review 50:Clean room, comfortable, good shower Good location for town centre, on bus route to the University
Review 51:Stupid policies They won't let anyone visit in your room. They will ask you too many questions on your check in like, Why you are here, what you do, copy of your photo ID and many more irrelevant questions. Noisy doors, broken shower, tiny toilets like you are in the aeroplane. In general you would feel like you are in a prison as they have so many security cameras.
Review 52:Aggressive statements demanding no eating in rooms. I pay a good price to do as I wish in a hotel room as long as it is in the same state when I leave. Do not like this attitude at all
Review 53:There is a door that leads to a set of room. My room was next to that door. Every time people were leaving, the door slammed and bangged to my room because the door of both of their room and that door was heavy. It was noisy in that sense.
Review 54:The cooked english breakfast wasnt to our taste tined mushrooms and wasnt asked what we would like but had a great selection of continental for everyone
Review 55:The fact that its child friendly very nice friendly run hotel we also.liked the fact you have a card key and come and go as you please
Review 56:Booked a cooked breakfast for 0730 as I had a meeting at 0800. The cook did not turn up until 0740 making excuses so I didn't have my cooked breakfast just toast.
Review 57:Nothing!
Review 58:Refurbished rooms Very quiet! (even on Fri & Sat nights) Very friendly staff! 10 min walk from the train station 10 min walk to the high street 3 min walk to Castle Park Several convenience shops within a few doors Free wifi Big bathroom Comfortable bed
Review 59:No staff being around during breakfast, I went to reception and found it locked. Thankfully managed to get the notice of someone before I left without the breakfast I paid for. Entrance to parking was extremely narrow, which wasn't helped by the flowerpots on either side!
Review 60:Location was excellent, easy to find and 10 mins walk from everywhere I needed. Hotel has it's own parking at the rear. Staff were very helpful
Review 61:Not clean rooms, very old fashioned and problematic WCs and shower facilities. Very disappointed.
Review 62:I did not like anything apart from the friendliness of the receptionist
Review 63:The shower screen on bath did not fit tight to the bath and this allowed water to leak onto the floor.
Review 64:The staff were helpful and polite, the room was comfortable and we were made to feel welcome...
Review 65:Having to walk two flights of stairs. The lift was only for disabled clients.
Review 66:The location of the hotel The staff were very friendly The food was good The service was good
Review 67:Not like any of photos shown, dirty carpet, disgusting, stained chair seat, rock solid pillow, one only per person, tiny basin with shelf over making it impossible to clean ones teeth etc., as unable to lean over basin, dated furniture and fittings, unable to open windows easily due to secondary double glazing.
Review 68:Clean bathroom, clean, comfy bed, nice and warm.
Review 69:when i got there i was told by the guy that checked me in if i wanted a nice room it would be another £10 a night before i had even entered the hotel -- it was windy overnight the windows rattled so much i got hardly any sleep-- the floorboards creaked with every move -- the quilt was only just as big as the bed-- the carpet needed cleaning i had a breakfast day 1 the egg was cooked at the bottom and raw on top day 2 i asked for 2 crisp bacon sandwiches the bacon was only just cooked not crisp --overall not an enjoyable stay and room nothing like the pictures-- to add insult to injury the wifi did not work managed to connect my phone but it said weak signal
Review 70:it wasnt too hard to find
Review 71:Awful & useless shower with terrible water pressure. Why is it that UK hotels so rarely spend money on what's one of the most vital parts of ones stay?
Review 72:Value for money Very comfortable bed Good heating
Review 73:The shower was to small and the water pressure was very poor
Review 74:The hotel is very central to centre, easy to get to and to drive out of the centre, has parking !!! Staff friendly and the hotel is clean
Review 75:A horrendous couple of nights. Many residents are long term and loud parties and arguments in the early hours. The doors don't lock on the inside- scary.
Review 76:Nothing
Review 77:as two older cousins, we were not ALLOWED in each others room to sit and watch t.v. One room had better facilities, i.e. towel rail in bathroom, fridge, tv was fixed too high on wall to watch comfortably without a crick in ones neck, breakfast was mediocre, not served up very warm,
Review 78:good bed, warm, location, parking free, security was good - too good!
Review 79:Dangerously slippery floor in bathroom, no bath mats. No wash cloth. No handrails near bath/shower. Toilet roll holder fell onto floor. Shower curtain rod flimsy. Food in restaurant is awful. Bedroom layout is inconvenient and uncomfortable. TV is mounted up so high it makes your neck hurt to watch it.
Review 80:Clean. Convenient parking.
Review 81:Overpriced. No fridge. You can't get have food in your room. The bed is very uncomfortable. The room smells bad. The building is old. The bathroom sink is tiny( couldn't even wash my face because the shelf is immediately above it!)
Review 82:The banging of the doors at midnight. It sounded like gun fire!! And something should be done about the staff wearing sensible shoes at that time of night. All I could hear was, clip clop, clip clop.they should wear trainers.
Review 83:The room was very clean, although I did think the bed was in the wrong place. The staff were lovely, very helpful. The breakfast was tasty. On the whole, a nice hotel.
Review 84:Unprofessional staff, some don't even speak proper english. The room was nowhere near like the pictures on booking.com. Very small room, shower had a blocked drainage and the water was just everywhere in the toilet after my wife had a shower. When we left, there was no one at reception. We had no choice to just leave the card and walk away. Really dissapointed, not worth £70 for these conditions. And it's supposed to be a 3 star hotel? What a joke. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Review 85:Location is good. Very close to town centre and train station.
Review 86:Cooked breakfast used very cheap ingredients and was not worth the money. Bathroom was very small and claustrophobic. Booked 1 double, 1 single ended up with 2 twins so had to move furniture.
Review 87:Location, large bedrooms, comfortable beds, restaurant food (fantastic), friendly staff.
Review 88:My bedroom was too close to the main road which meant that there was a lot of noise from people leaving clubs and pubs Also the shower wasn't good to get a flow of water you had to hold the shower head to just above waist height to get a decent flow
Review 89:Staff very friendly , the general appearance was clean and well maintained
Review 90:They have a cover place to storage bicycles. Wifi is really free and good.
Review 91:no proper bar area, a few cans and bottles in an enclosed area small dingy shower cubical only food facilities being an indian restaurant
Review 92:nothings stands out not far to walk to find food and a reasonable bar
Review 93:The room was on top of the restaurant facing a major road: Traffic started at 6 am Shaky foundation of bathroom nobody at reception in the morning television on and off
Review 94:close to center of town
Review 95:-The first room I was given had not been cleaned from the previous occupants, when I went back to reception and conplained I was initially told there were no other rooms available, when I said this was unacceptable, they managed to find me another room, twice the size as the first in another part of the hotel. - The reception is across the street from the hotel and appears to be in a different hotel but they are actualy all part of the same one. - The first room which I was assign, although not especially cheap, was tiny, I could barely open the door without hitting the end of the single bed - The lift was not working and there were no signs to this effect, after waiting ten mins for the lift I walk down the fire exit stairs and walked around the bulding to the (locked) reception entrance. After knocking on the door for a few minutes I managed to get the attention of a member of staff to check out.
Review 96:- the second room I recieved was spacious and appeared clean and everything worked ok (I'm guessing this was a more expensive room that what I initially paid for)
Review 97:The power sockets didn't work, and it was quite a lot of traffic noise and shouts from the road. The bathroom fan was also very noisy and went on and on for a long time after I turned the light off. The soap?shampoo? conditioner? in the shower was not labeled so I have no idea what it was. No hair drier.
Review 98:It was convenient for the bus to university. Free wifi in the room. The staff was friendly.
Review 99:You cant really see the tv it was bit nosy with road sweepers going past at 3am
Review 100:I liked the poiletness from staff upon check in and check out cleanines of hotel and the room i travelled from london this hotel wasnt far from colchester station which was good as i arrived very late
Review 101:The position of the hotel was good in relation to where we wanted to be and there were restaurants readily available but the area you had to pass through to get to the centre was rather dirty and scruffy
Review 102:Very large room which could have been used for self catering if we had wished. Close to the city centre. Breakfast was good and similar to what is usually offered. The room was clean and the staff friendly. A car park was a plus in a central location
Review 103:There was a lot of noise from the road. The bathroom was very small and it felt like I was in a caravan. There was one small shelf over the sink but it was difficult to use the washbasin because this was in the way.
Review 104:Staff were friendly and helpful Convenient location for access to central Colchester. Room furnishings were reasonable.Good off- road and secure parking.
Review 105:Both bulbs broken in bathroom Can hear all sounds from corridor Alarm clock was unplugged and had to crawl behind closet to plug it...
Review 106:Phenomenal breakfast despite an extra cost of 7£50 Comfortable bed Cozy atmosphere of old and clean building
Review 107:the room was spartan. There was no clock or bedside lamp and the main light switch was across the room. There were dead insects in the picture frames. The seats were badly stained
Review 108:The staff were very helpful and friendly
Review 109:Bathroom was tiny and bedding not the cleanest. No hairdryer in room as stated on website.
Review 110:Staff were friendly. Location good. New towels provided daily
Review 111:Room a bit cramped but well equipped. Double bed had only one bedside table
Review 112:Cleanliness of room and excellent décor Restaurant for breakfast Friendly and helpful staff
Review 113:Uncomfortable mattress and pillows Not enough sockets Shower was just a box, that filled with water during shower Lock on shower door was so stiff , one of us got nearly stuck inside
Review 114:Clean, near town centre Ample parking space
Review 115:Dirty bedding. Shower gel / shampoo dispensers not working. Very small shower cubicle / toilet. TV remote faulty. Noisy. No do not disturb sign.
Review 116:Noisy. Works done during afternoon and evenings. No AC. Pricey for quality offered.
Review 117:Rooms were new. Location close to center. Some kindness at reception. Free parking in cctv backyard.
Review 118:breakfast was not included nor had the ability to include in the price I paid to reserve the hotel. I paid gbp 7 per person for breakfast.
Review 119:the staff was very polite and helfull
Review 120:(Please note photo evidence available): Room 5: TV did not work at all, aerial was disconnected and no cable present. Towels not provided until after I had booked in at 3pm, I went shopping in Colchester for a towel and when I got back the towels were on my bed. Carpets were stained and worn, and covered in human hair, and quite dirty around the edges of the room. There was a long black hair on the bedsheet. There was a short black hair on the toilet cistern. There was a black insect on the duvet, but this was a beetle, not a bedbug. The shower/toilet room was clean but the push-buttons on the shampoo, shower gel etc., did not work and I had to lift the top cover and scoop out shampoo with my fingers. The radio clock alarm was not plugged in and there were no instructions. In the morning, I visited the breakfast room, where another guest was complaining about foreign objects in two sausages (peas?). It put me off eating there, and I just ate items I could see the outside of (bacon, egg, beans, tomatoes). Finally, it was inconsiderate of the owner (?) to sprawl over an armchair in the reception area, speaking Indian extremely loudly, when the poor but very pleasant and obliging Japanese receptionist was trying to book me in. Not the best reception possible, owner please take note. Would I recommend this Hotel? No. Never again.
