Reviews for Gidleigh Park Hotel
Review 1:Meal service was awful One hour and 3 attempts to serve eggs sunny-side up. French accents so broad that difficult to understand. dinner portions completely erractic Dining room serve full of apologies
Review 2:Peace and quiet location and very remote
Review 3:Access road difficult for rental car with automatic transmission, which tend to be wider cars. Also dinner service could be improved--unfinished wine removed; and charming (but often incomprehensible) staff French accents.
Review 4:The driveway is scary, single track! The service on our second night in the restaurant was slow. Mentioned it to manager who dealt with situation efficiently and sympathetically.
Review 5:The grounds were lovely. Had a la carte menu both nights. Pistacio Soufflé was the best I've had, lovely. They took the trouble to adapt the dishes to accommodate my husbands nut allergy too.
Review 6:None
Review 7:Excellent staff lead by a wonderful and extremely attentive general manager . Most relaxing ambiance and extraordinary and superlative cuisine - Michael Caines more than lives up to his wonderful reputation .
Review 8:Restaurant food quality mediocre at best and horribly overpriced. We have dined in world wide gourmet restaurants , but two tasteless bites of the veal main course was a real joke. Breakfast was good but nothing special.
Review 9:Location and atmosphere.
Review 10:Great venue. Staff are excellent. Do upgrade for the tasting menu for dinner. Arrive early afternoon to enjoy the venue and park. The drive there can be a bit of an adventure, but it is half the fun.
Review 11:cost of evening meals far too expensive. difficulty in reaching it.the roads were so narrow, for such a long way.
Review 12:friendliness of staff.once there it was in a lovely position.beautifully kept. however we would not return.
Review 13:The only complaint is that the pillows were hard and needed replacing. No other complaints.
Review 14:Wonderful surroundings & views. Helpful and attentive staff. Excellent room.
Review 15:Not a bad experience. However though staff were very attentive, they should try to be more natural, less gushing, less syrupy as if they were created in the kitchen too.
Review 16:location is excellent. Food is obviously to a good standard.
Review 17:The narrow Dartmoor Roads might not be for everyone.
Review 18:It's set in extensive manicured grounds on the edge of Dartmoor. Other than a rather weak WiFi it's superb in every respect.
Review 19:Faultless. Maybe swimming pool /leisure facilities would be the icing on the cake.
Review 20:Wonderful greeting on arrival from Simon and Amey. Maitre'd and all the staff served a superb dinner. Breakfast also excellent - and Phil deserves a mention - for luggage help
Review 21:The rocks on the side of driveway _ and the puncture they caused!
Review 22:Friendly, welcoming staff with just the right degree of attentiveness. Fantastic food and wines and a well appointed, spacious room, full of character.
Review 23:Not a bad experience but feel dinner options were both too expensive. Also the entrance door did not auto close so it was often cold from deliveries and people generally leaving the door open.
Review 24:Relaxed environment
Review 25:Nothing, it was all just great.
Review 26:The whole bit, location wonderful, staff attentive but not intrusive, food just superb. Every effort to ensure you max out on a great stay.
Review 27:Nothing
Review 28:The food was luxuriously perfect in every way. Staff attentive but not in your face, The rooms and facilities were spotless, The location was beautiful although a little off the beaten track. We were also lucky enough to meet Chef Michael Caines during the visit. On the morning of departure we had a tyre issue and the staff could not have been more helpful
Review 29:N.B. to the council. The road to this wonderful hotel is getting to the stage where it will damage our cars even at crawling pace.I realise that the money pot has greater priorities but this hotel is an asset to your county.
Review 30:The whole experience was exceptional. Thank you to all the staff for making our, far too short, stay so special. The personal touches to mark our special day was thoughtful. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. My husband's dietary requirements weren't a problem and his menu was as exciting as mine. Am just looking for another excuse to return. Only wish we lived closer to pop in for high tea or lunch regularly.
Review 31:I had to return my main course for being overcooked. The whole attitude of our waiting staff changed, unfortunately it spoiled the evening for me though my wife loved the whole experience!
Review 32:The location is stunning with great walks on the doorstep. We were expecting a room with a woodland view but we're given a room with a balcony and fantastic views over the front lawns.
Review 33:No dislikes
Review 34:It lived up to everything i expected good happy staff nothing was to much trouble. Food out of this world. Thanks everybody for an enjoyable stay
Review 35:Nothing to dislike
Review 36:One of the best Hotels we've staid in. The Staff were very efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The food was out of this world.
Review 37:The access was a bit awkward but once at hotel all was forgotten.
Review 38:Gidleigh Park was a dream place to stay for a special occasion and another visit is high on my list. Surroundings perfect and fantastic cuisine - would highly recommend it.
Review 39:Nothing it was great
Review 40:Fantastic night at Gidleigh. When I booked our stay I phoned the hotel to book a table for the evening. Was told a table had already been booked for us, great ☺. Was asked about any dietry requirements, we are both veggie, no problem. Any special occasion? It was my partners birthday. OK I was told. When we arrived WOW, lovely location, once you find it, lol. But the hotel and staff were great from the moment we arrived until we left. The room was fantastic, there was a welcome pack, which included a little happy birthday note, nice touch. We toured the grounds, before heading back to our room. When we got downstairs for a pretty dinner drink we were given our own prepared menu, cool. We went for the 8 course taster, with matching wines, it was shear brilliance. Will be back for sure.
Review 41:Being charged for bottled still water at dinner when there is spring water on tap - this did seem odd when such lovely Dartmoor water is readily available at the hotel.
Review 42:Excellent accommodation and service. Evening dinner lived up to all high expectations - highly recommended for a special break. Nothing was too much trouble.
Review 43:The tasting menu took forever and was merely good, not excellent Service tried but missed. At this price everything has to be faultless
Review 44:Location and welcome Room was lovely, if gloomy because of small windows.
Review 45:One large party of residents were perhaps just a little too casual, turning up loudly to dinner on Saturday evening in an exuberant haze of jeans and alcohol. But with that one exception, only the most curmudgeonly could possibly find fault with the hotel.
Review 46:Fab cooking by Michael Caines, fab setting on Dartmoor, superbly attentive (yet somehow unobtrusive) staff. Yet the food and the staff and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and unhurried luxury without pretensions - and there really aren't many hotels and restaurants with 2 Michelin stars that succeed in maintaining such a fine balance!
Review 47:First class , friendly service, and a stunning setting. The food / restaurant is second to none. The room was fabulous with a view to die for.
Review 48:No dislikes and we hope to return as soon as possible!
Review 49:Everything - the peace and quiet, the friendliness, efficiency and service of the staff. The delicious food. Thanks for a lovely stay!
Review 50:We were expecting a very special experience, but were disappointed. We had to wait for 45 minutes for our first course on the first evening which was excessive and also we were put in a room alone, without even staff coming in, while watching others going past the door to other rooms. The food was not as wonderful as we were expecting on the first evening. The chairs in our room were uncomfortable. All in all a disappointing experience, I' m afraid. The wine list was enormous but very expensive.
Review 51:The Views are spectacular, and the afternoon tea was excellent. Staff were very pleasant and happy. Walking round the gardens was enjoyable. Dinner on our second evening was better than on the first evening, and the canapés were delicious.
Review 52:We loved the Signature menu and A La Carte evenings equally. Gidleigh takes attention to detail to a whole new level - in the dining room and well ... everywhere. All the staff were, of course, highly professional but also delightful. The setting is wonderful and we enjoyed exploring the estate and the walk up to moors past tumbling torrents and mossy forest on the way. The restaurant experience was superb and memorable.
Review 53:Terrifying drive along narrow track lane to get there from Chagford. Fortunately,we only met a taxi which was obviously used to negotiating the lane. Breakfast was a little disappointing in comparison with the quality of previous night's dinner
Review 54:Peace and tranquillity with exceptional cuisine. We had to curtail our stay for family reasons and are pleased to have been offered a gift voucher against a future stay. We very much hope to return
Review 55:Cancelled morning call on the second day - someone did not pass the message on and we were woken up! Asked for attention to one of the bedside lamps and that did not happen. Communication poor.
Review 56:Food and service of the dining/breakfast room
Review 57:Even though the food was wonderful we felt the service was a bit slow. We understand that we were a party of eight but sometimes we waited a bit long for our food.
Review 58:The hotel staff were very warm and always greeted us and were eager t help in any way. The rooms were cleaned and straightened several times a day.
Review 59:It is pricey - but you pay a lot for the best!
Review 60:Service Food Room - lovely shower/bath area Grounds (Extra touches: madeira in room, self service pantry for food and beverages) Tolietries
Review 61:Fabulous attentive staff, excellent michelin starred food
Review 62:no pool. no vista. can't have everything.
Review 63:food sensational. setting glorious. nice walks nearby.
Review 64:No, or not good enough, information about your outdoor activities.
Review 65:The location
Review 66:Amazing Place, very high standard of service, friendly and very helpful staff, great communication. We have really enjoyed our stay at Gidleigh.
Review 67:Getting there is a little bit complicated
Review 68:Very English, excellent service, beautiful atmosphere
Review 69:From arriving to leaving couldn't fault the attention to detail was amazing!
Review 70:Must drive on very narrow roads to reach the hotel.
Review 71:Unbelievable service and 2-star Michelin restaurant. Just an amazing experience to stay here.
Review 72:The access road. The pot holes could be filled!
Review 73:The well trained, helpful and extremely friendly staff
Review 74:No shops near the hotel
Review 75:The top floor rooms are a little small for the price.
Review 76:Location is amazing. Attention to detail. Food superb.
Review 77:The food is amazing but everything else is good too.
Review 78:Nothing we didn't like
Review 79:Friendly and attentive staff, wonderfully comfortable room and superb food and wine. We wished we could have stayed longer.
Review 80:Everything
Review 81:Staff,room,facilities,food,drink,grounds,service
Review 82:The road to the hotel
Review 83:Ambience
Review 84:Excellent, friendly service.
Review 85:It was the most relaxing experience with first class food and accommodation.
Review 86:Excellent staff; polite, courteous, interesting. Very good food, lovely grounds, lovely surroundings; just a very fine hotel.
Review 87:The complete package
Review 88:Friendly helpful staff. Great attention to detail Fantastic food. Beautiful setting Excellent facilities
Review 89:attentive friendly staff and great cuisine in comfortable surroundings. Difficult to beat.
Review 90:Nothing negative at all but quite pricey.
Review 91:Absolutely everything! Stunning surroundings, amazing food, extremely attentive staff- just perfect!
Review 92:Not a single thing
Review 93:The long (over 1 mile) single track road to the hotel
Review 94:Everything about the hotel and service
Review 95:The bill....but you only live once.
Review 96:Absolutely everything. It must be one of the best hotels in Britain.
Review 97:Coffee and bacon at breakfast.
Review 98:No pool
Review 99:Service, food, wine, tennis court, walks in grounds
Review 100:The staff
Review 101:No comment
Review 102:We both enjoyed the al carte experience it was extremely relaxing location and outstanding comfort and service , we will be back.
Review 103:The drive down the approach road was interesting, especially when we met a dumper truck.
Review 104:Beautiful area, helpful & pleasant staff, fabulous food, lovely bedroom.
Review 105:The Drive to the Hotel !!!! the lane is very narrow we feared meeting a vehicle the other way, we then had the fear of driving back the next day, we had all four red lights and alarms on our car going the whole drive.
Review 106:We loved the hotel and the excellent food, beautiful grounds and walks. we had a truly lovely stay.
Review 107:The presentation of the food was very sophisticated, our particular meal was tasteless and extremily expensive. For that reason we had two dinners in the village which were very good. The breakfast was excellent.
Review 108:Everything was perfect. The staff remembered your name and things about you. Food was superb and waiting staff attentive without being too intrusive.
Review 109:Only issue, if you open the entrance door when your wife is in the bathroom and another person is in the corridor there is no privacy as no bathroom door
Review 110:We felt that the room was expensive for the size. Although the bathroom was as expected.
Review 111:The staff were out standing. Knowledgeable and attentive with out being intrusive. We loved The Pantry.
Review 112:We would have liked to have had a coffee table in our room and the lighting was very poor and it was difficult to read. My husband is handicapped so had to spend quite a lot of time in our room and it would have helped to have had a coffee table and the lighting was really poor for reading. We also didn't like the long drive up the lane without passing places, but then we are old and reversing is not easy!
Review 113:We liked most things and the food was delicious. The staff were most helpful The grounds are just beautiful, even in winter and we can imagine that in the summer it would be even better. It was a wonderful break just prior to the Christmas celebrations and just what we needed.
Review 114:Our stay was pure perfection whats not to like about that!!
Review 115:On arrival we were greeted at the door by the hotel manager and severalstaff wishing my wife happy birthday. Then given a tour of the hotel andshown to our room which was "FINGLE" it was wonderful.Everything about gidleigh is immaculate we even walked into the woods tofind the foot paths clear of leaves and being december this must of beena monumental task for the grounds staff. The food was out of this world. All in all from the second we arrived to the second we left everyone atgidleigh gave my wife a birthday stay she will never forget. Thank you
Review 116:Everything, we wanted to give our close friends a special day and Gidleigh provided it in spades. The welcoming team made our stay very relaxed and the celebration lunch for all of us was stunning. Thank you all very much.
Review 117:Appeared meals weren't cooked to order (use of sous-vide is fine, but reheating and searing effectively is vital!), leaving everything warm. No excuse for breakfasts not being cooked to order though, benedict = stale muffin, curdled hollandaise and criminally over cooked eggs. Also ham served with it was bland and watery. This served warm = uninspired. Simple things I expected to be perfected in a established place like this. Me and my partner commented on the obvious lack of authority with the sommelier. A few buzzwords she had in her armoury im afraid didnt cut the bull!
Review 118:Love the location. Clean and maintained to a high standard. Staff enthusiastic and diligent (loosen their shackles a little bit tho!!). Loved some of the little touches which made for a special night.
Review 119:The awful single track road with inadequate passing places. It made for a stressful drive, particularly with a big car hence the down mark on location The whites of the fried eggs at breakfast were like rubber due to being under a heated lamp I think. Even when replaced they were not much better. I would have expected better from your kitchens
Review 120:The staff They made the stay so much more pleasant. The Hotel - Lovely surroundings The food - My wife is into gourmet food hence the visit to you. She loved the food!
Review 121:bill presented at end of stay without detail listed ie drinks by name and cost
Review 122:very friendly staff worked hard at their jobs which is very good to see and experience. size of room and views very good
Review 123:A truly magical place. Even though we only stayed for a weekend, it felt much longer as we were so relaxed. The views and surrounding area are spectacular, and the welcome and service by the staff are the best that we have experienced. We had only been there about three hours and we were talking about when we could make a return trip. Truly wonderful.
