Reviews for The Three Crowns

Review 1:there was no information about breakfast told to us during the check in and there is no word about it in the Hotel Information booklet in the room. But once we called downstairs they said that breakfast is waiting for us. Just strange. Restaurant in the Inn is ok, nothing special.

Review 2:Location was just something that we were looking for - in the heart of the National Park. Rooms renovated and nice, enough space on the car park, nice dining/breakfast area

Review 3:Staff stretched when busy had to wait over 30mins to be acknowledged for meal even though we had booked and waitress knew we were waiting. Breakfast was as bad 1/2 hour for inedible scrambled egg. No dog rule in bars not adhered to. Dog where we ate and another in bar.

Review 4:Friendly staff

Review 5:Parking is reserved for those with superior rooms but we didn't find that out on first day, only that there were less places than guests so first come first served. We got back early day 2 to try to get a space only to find all had been reserved.

Review 6:Good food and public areas

Review 7:The extractor fan from the kitchen was loud and intrusive. Rooms in the extension weren't as nice as those pictured on the site would suggest.

Review 8:The staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Lovely location on the middle of a delightful village.

Review 9:We had breakfast & we're sat by the exit door to car park, every time someone came in/out which was often, there was a cold draft, if we knew we would of sat else where.

Review 10:Nice room, comfortable bed good selection of hot drinks in room. A nice relaxed atmosphere in the bar. Good breakfast & choice.

Review 11:Some noise from the air conditioning unit / heating system (?) outside our room.

Review 12:Central position in Chagford on Dartmoor - a favourite place of ours. Very good (large) room, deep / long bath, lovely friendly staff, delicious food & wine, warm atmosphere. Reasonable price for a treat day or two away. Parking on site helpful.

Review 13:bathroom could have had a shelf for toiletries and rails for towels otherwise lovely

Review 14:great hotel with lovely staff who were very helpful. Will definitely stay again.

Review 15:The poached eggs were not very good at breakfast

Review 16:Lovely room and bespoke parking space. Right in the centre of Chagford and close to the lovely hardware stores. Extremely comfortable bed,

Review 17:We stayed here 3 nights to explore Dartmoor. Our room was very comfortable and overlooked the village church and beautiful Devon countryside. Staff were very friendly and attentive. We ate in the restaurant the first night. The food was delicious. Overall a wonderful stay.

Review 18:Welcome was a little cool, and negative which was contrary to the impression and information given over the phone prior to arrival. Scrambled eggs at breakfast not cooked to order and overcooked, dry and rubbery which was a shame. Bacon also overcooked.

Review 19:Good service and generally friendly staff

Review 20:stayed here for one night before my wedding with family and some friends - everything lovely from staff to cosy bar and delicious food! would definitely come back

Review 21:Arrived after midnight, staff were extremely friendly and couldnt help enough. Breakfast was stunning and great selection. Will definately be returning.

Review 22:Changed room as only 1 bedside table and lamp, too cramped, the upgrade cost me £40 for a mediocre room. Breakfast service was a joke, all staff having merry time in the kitchen, did not notice there were customers in the Restaurant

Review 23:Location

Review 24:There was nothing not to like except parking a little difficult when busy

Review 25:the friendly staff and attentive service created a relaxed atmosphere clean and comfortable rooms, would recommend and certainly use again

Review 26:I think the hotel is let down by the standard of food in the evening. I would have expected significantly better, given the high standards elsewhere. I also felt that European staff could improve in their manner and responsiveness to guests - piles of dirty plates should not be left on the tables for long periods, customers should not be kept waiting while they have a chat, the complaints about the food from other guests did not appear to be taken either respectfully or seriously.

Review 27:The standard and location of the hotel was fantastic and breakfast was delicious. Alison Cooch went above and beyond the call of duty to give the place the personal touch- she is a guardian angel

Review 28:Parking is a bit limited and I would have liked to have breakfast from 7.00am but I suppose they cater more for tourists than business travellers.

Review 29:Staff were very friendly and accommodating, food was good and the hotel was very clean. Nice village location for tourists wanting to visit the area. Internet connection was very good.

Review 30:The final bill was not at all clear and indeed was initially badly incorrect. The wording on the bill should clearly state what you are being charge for. I would have liked to have had linen table napkins

Review 31:A good place to stay

Review 32:Our evening meal was a disappointment. The menu was limited and the quality of the food could have been better. The dining area was noisy and lacked the right atmosphere.

Review 33:The room offered was very comfortable, clean and of a good size. The staff were very welcoming on arrival and helpful on departure.

Review 34:There was nothing not to like! If I was forced to find a grumble, with a gun to my head, the parking isn't that easy, but that's a Chagford thing rather than a Three Crowns thing!

Review 35:The hotel, facilities and staff were all excellent - just didn't put a foot wrong. We would happily recommend, and will be back...

Review 36:No parking at Hotel. Also our room was a very small double. Plugs were not near table so if you were drying your hair you blocked anyone getting into the bathroom. Limited space around bed and wardrobe blocked access. #13. Luxury rooms outside super and other rooms did look larger so check first!

Review 37:Very Corey and welcoming. We have lived in south Devon but always loved Chagford. Staff lovely and food good.

Review 38:Menu and restaurant setting lovely with great atmosphere. Room was beautiful. All food, incl breakfast was delicious. We have already recommended u :)

Review 39:The room was too hot. You couldn't leave the window open at night because of the noise from the extractor fans outside.

Review 40:The staff were very accommodating, polite and extremely helpful

Review 41:The breakfast was totally disappointing. Had to wait 45 min, ( whilst other people arriving after us received theirs first). Pastries were burnt, they were black, could smell the burn throughout the room and kept it on display. When breakfast finally arrived the fried bread was black, again burnt.

Review 42:The staff were all very very helpful and smiley, the hotel was beautiful outside and my room was extremely comfortable and every little detail was perfect. The food was extremely tasty and locally sourced which was a lovely touch.

Review 43:The service (in terms of waiting time) and the quality of the food were both below that expected. It transpired that there were problem with the number of chefs. If this was the case, perhaps it would have been wise to advise us that a longer wait than normal was to be experienced. An hour between finishing our starters and receiving our mains was unacceptable. That said, we did not pay for one main course and was offered the cheese board and glasses of port free of charge.

Review 44:Natasha in the restaurant and Tiff on reception were very good although in fairness these were the only two we really dealt with. Although we had telephoned to book a table days before, upon arrival one had not been allocated. However, Tiff found us one which was just as well as we were staying overnight.

Review 45:Scallops were tiny and only 3 but the rest of the meal was excellent. Breakfast was also excellent.

Review 46:Excellent hotel, location and most importantly, staff

Review 47:Being told I couldn't eat there as dining room full with no option to have a meal in my room or in the bar. Didn't feel hospitable at all. The point of staying there was so I didn't have to go out.

Review 48:Room nicely done

Review 49:The room was a bit faded, with a very worn bed headboard and very 80's wallpaper on the back wall.

Review 50:Chagford was a lovely town and perfectly placed. Bars and restaurant welcoming and breakfast was very good.

Review 51:Some of the meals were good others were disappointing, in quantity and presentation. Our room had an damp like odour in the bathroom.

Review 52:Friendly helpful staff, especially the cleaner , and bar staff. Warm cosy accomodation.

Review 53:Noise from staff and kitchen extractor fan was off putting. Lack of menu choice and slow service in restaurant. Not worth what we paid.

Review 54:Bed was very comfortable, room was a good size.

Review 55:Very comfortable room and quiet at night. Food was very good. Location convenient for a stopover on the way to Cornwall and Chagford was interesting to visit

Review 56:The service was unfortunately not great. We waited ten minutes to check out despite being the first in line. All staff were working in the breakfast room and yet food comes out very slowly. We also waited about twenty minutes for staff to even come near us when we had dinner. The hotel is lovely but the rooms are small. The rooms around the inner corridor also have the sound of the generator all night which spoils the silence a little

Review 57:The location is lovely- chagford is a great base to explore exmoor. The rooms are small but well stocked. Tea and coffee and amenities are very good!

Review 58:Just a little noise of the boiler or something , but not a big deal

Review 59:Staff were very nice and friendly, nice friendly atmosphere, good selection of beer and cider. Nice breakfast, evening meal was just fantastic, perfect dessert.

Review 60:Room was near kitchen and it was extremely noisy until late, and then from early. Inconsiderate banging about and slamming of doors, which shook the building. Staff were understanding, but didn't offer any refund on the day. They responded later when we followed up the complaint by email. Thanks very much for that.

Review 61:Beautiful pub, lovely food and staff. Liked the room.... but.

Review 62:Bed was not all that comfortable and small. Room quite small. Evening meal was unpleasant and although there were lots of staff on none of were really keeping an eye on needs of diners.

Review 63:Nice period property

Review 64:The rooms around the courtyard are not private enough and suffer from the noises from the ventilation extraction.

Review 65:There was a mistake with our room and the staff were understanding and friendly trying to sort it out.

Review 66:Nothing.

Review 67:Fantastic stay in a lovely building. Everything was perfect for us. All the staff were very friendly and very helpful. Room was lovely and the beds were very comfortable. The food was delicious.

Review 68:Not enough space in Classic Room - get rid of large wardrobe and make space for two suitcases - leave out the suitcase supporter where it can be seen. On the expensie side Bit small not enough space around fire

Review 69:Fireplace - restaurant fine very comfortbale

Review 70:Didn't meet the resident ghost!

Review 71:Friendly staff who couldn't do more. Excellent location for Chagford and the surrounding area of Dartmoor. The room was tastefully decorated with good facilities. Food was excellent and pretty good value for a 5 star. Would definitely return if in the area.

Review 72:Dull and poor quality furniture in bedroom. The bathroom stank as if a wet nappy had been dried in there. The lounges were not comfortable. Dirty carpet on first stairs to rooms. Poor menu for luxury accom. No help with bags.

Review 73:Breakfast, staff were friendly, fire in the lounge. Tea and coffee tray well stocked.

Review 74:The evening menu was very limiting needed more variety and also they had big boilers outside which were very noisy so if you ask for a room be place away from the boilers. If you have difficulty walking the main building is old and there is a lot of stairs so ask to be put in the courtyard rooms which are on the flat.

Review 75:The staff were very pleasant and helpful Lovely open fire and very central to look around the lovely village

Review 76:Cooked breakfast Luke warm. Undercooked bacon and overcooked poached eggs.

Review 77:Very well presented modernised hotel. Small but well designed rooms. Very friendly staff. Wonderful location.

Review 78:Was looking forward to bath but only a shower. Wi fi not very good in room.

Review 79:Location great for Gidleigh Park. Taxi cheap from there.Lovely room and hot breakfast tasty.Staff friendly and offere to take us to Gidleigh when taxi did not arrive.

Review 80:During dinner I was given a cold half cup of expresso coffee. When I asked for a full hot cup the waitress said she had charged us an extra 50p which seemed petty and embarrassing the matter was rectified amicably. Also the last morning there were flies all over the melon at breakfast.

Review 81:The location and the comfort and the friendly bar staff.

Review 82:The lunch and dinner menu selection (which seemed to be the same} was disappointing. The menu was a relatively short list of main dinner choices which were uninspiring.

Review 83:Location of The Three Crowns is set in a picturesque picture postcard village. A good place to stay to take one of the many walking routes from Chagford. The conservatory in the Hotel, which is used as the main dining room, is the highlight of the building, its a wonderfully light airy room. Staff were very courteous and friendly.

Review 84:The food served: the Sunday roast and the sirloin steak were average and because of 'Excellent Food ' boasted on the board outside resulted in disappointment. The corner shower in our room, although modern was exceedingly cramped. The carpet on the stairs up to the upstairs rooms was well worn and detracted from our excellent first impressions.

Review 85:Spacious comfortable room with modern trimmings & decor. All the staff we interacted with were pleasant and efficient. Several different areas where you could eat added to the ambiance.

Review 86:There was no one to assist with our baggage up the steep and narrow staircase and no lift. Also, we were asked to remove our car from the car park late on the second day and there was no alternative parking available. They withdrew when I complained.

Review 87:The staff were very friendly and informal and the breakfasts were excellent. Food and refreshments are available throughout the day and served with efficiency and charm.

Review 88:Loud noises coming from the building - plates banging from the kitchen downstairs as we were trying to sleep. Restaurant duck course - small duck breast, tiny potato cake, small bit of cabbage and gravy for £17 - left hungry and overcharged.

Review 89:Location, look of the building, character of the building. The breakfast was nice, cooked options as well as buffet style snacks. The pub area looked lovely. The room was comfortable and well decorated.

Review 90:The room's carpet had not been cleaned in some time and showed stains and dirt. Wifi was a bit intermittent, but not surprising in Dartmoor.

Review 91:The room was spacious. The breakfast was fine. Lovely location and pleasant staff.

Review 92:I thought the hotel was great and I'd recommend it to others. Though perhaps if you expect a higher level of customer service (which was very friendly, just not exceptional) you may be disappointed.

Review 93:We really enjoyed our one night stay. The hotel is very clean, stylish and the food is great. Our best was very comfortable so we slept well too!

Review 94:We felt the extractor fans from the kitchen were very noisy and spoilt sitting in the outside courtyard. Also could be heard in our room shame they could not be put elsewhere

Review 95:Lovely staff great location very comfortable room and good food

Review 96:Car parking was severely restricted. Room was a tad small.

Review 97:Polish waiter was very accommodating; a marvellous representative for the establishment. Food was excellent.

Review 98:Lile all historic inns in England, it May be a long walk up and down various stairs to your room- so pack light!

Review 99:Historic Inn, Cozy with modern touches. Delicious breakfast, excellent italian style coffees. Very friendly staff, restaurant quite good with inspired dishes.

Review 100:Internet was very bad unable to get a connection with a days worth of emails to catch up on. Also meals and drinks were added to my room that were not mine, good job I noticed.

Review 101:Nice clean homely, pleasant staff

Review 102:Nothing

Review 103:Very warm welcome from staff, large guest room with everything required, lovely food, excellent location. Your own personal parking space was a cool touch. Very sympathetically renovated old building.

Review 104:Bit noisy with Windows open. Dinner menu fine for two nights but bit limited thereafter.

Review 105:Nick the maitre de. Wonderful man. Location & town.Bowdens/Webber.

Review 106:Awful noise in courtyard rooms from kitchen extractor all day and all night. Very little information in room on breakfast, service, etc.. Soulless place to be honest. Character gone and generic feel throughout. We would not stay again.

Review 107:Good location and parking spot brilliant.

Review 108:We were lucky to have a parking space in the hotel car park which is quite small. However, there is a large pay and display car park very close for the hotel.

Review 109:We went for a friend's wedding and came with our 7 month old baby. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful and went out of their way to help us to feed and look after our baby (eg. providing cot, high chair, heating up his food in restaurant). The staff are what make this hotel so wonderful, and that made our lovely weekend trip into an amazing one! Would definitely recommend this hotel if you're visiting this neck of the woods.

Review 110:Very comfortable room. Really clean and excellent servicing. Liked the reserved parking which made a big difference. Near to Teign Valley for walks. Lovely little village with good shops and a variety of places to eat

Review 111:The room decor is tired , the carpets on stair wells threadbare. Thefirst room we were given (paid upgrade for deluxe!) was dark , not madeas twin as pre requested , I was with somone who has underlyingconditions and we had to wait 40mins for the room to be changed ! Oncloser inspection discovered the only thing deluxe was a sofa whichstill had a plastic price tag on and looked like it was from a cheapfurniture store . The bed head was velvet and you could see wherepeople's heads had rubbed it bare! The dresser had gouge marks onlike somone had gone mad with a knife. We asked if we could havedifferent room and was told all booked, I went to reception to complainand they found a disabled room was free , my sister has mobility issuesso that was a good option but the wet room smelled of bad drains andneeded steam cleaning. We complained to staff and they said the placeis the brewery's best seller and so they won't fix things whilethey are still making money , shocking and terrible this place could beamazing with some time , money and care in the rooms !! The price tagis over priced for the room provided compared to similar we have stayedat.. It made us feel conned and ruined the "rest " mycompanion needed after a long drive on our last night , returning onour journey home from a special birthday holiday ....the managementdidn't even offer discount at check out as an apology or offer acommentary drink at dinner for the inconvenience and upset , but theywere happy to encourage us to write to the brewery as they feltcustomer feedback may be better actioned where the managers had triedand failed !

Review 112:The location The old building The restaurant The stags enthusiasm andeffort to fix things within their control

Review 113:Cowboy steak inedible and had to be returned. Cafeteria type layout ofdining room for dinner. Shower wouldn't stay put in chosen position.Basin plug chain broken. Grout around bath broken and missing.

Review 114:Specifically reserved parking bays. Location. Breakfast offering.

Review 115:My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in this hotel, and it was all first class. A super country location, and we had beautiful weather, thank you so much to all.

Review 116:Wifi was poor on the room. Shower tray was blocked with matted hair from previous guests. Evening menu didn't cater for vegetarian / lactose intolerant dietary requirements (which would be expected from a 4*) - had to mix and match a couple of starter dishes to make a full meal.

Review 117:Nice village location. Contemporary decor.

Review 118:Room 13 very small - should not be a double room. Wardrobe too large for size of room. No shelf space in bathroom. Staff moved us to a more suitable room. Fish ran out of the menu by 19h00 on Sunday. Choice of dinner menu not great. We had to park away from hotel and pay for parking. Carpet on main staircase threadbare.

Review 119:Staff were very friendly. Good breakfast.

Review 120:The first room we were allocated - number 13 - was tiny and had a wardrobe in the room that you could not easily get around. Also nOt any shelf space in the bathroom to put anything on. The first night we were there the restaurant ran out of fish at 19h00. The staircase carpet from the reception area was threadbare.

Review 121:Staff were lovely. We were moved to a better room. Breakfast was great. The dinner selection could be improved especially if you stayed more than one night.

Review 122:The staff are very friendly and helpful. The facilities are very good and the glass-roofed dining room is a very pleasant place to eat. Relaxed atmosphere.

Review 123:The wifi was a bit hit and miss in the room but perfect in the main bar and restaurant area.

Review 124:This hotel is situated in a small picturesque Dartmoor village, our room was large with comfortable bed and large bathroom with walk in shower. The staff were friendly and helpful, it was our 30th wedding anniversary and Lucy at reception arranged the delivery of some flowers from a local florist, a lovely surprise for my wife! The food was excellent, as this hotel is owned by a brewery so was the beer, overall an excellent stay, highly recommended.

Review 125:Pre-stay, after booking... Tiff was amazing and catered for all my requests. The most fantastic stay... All the staff, facilities. Catering was so amazing. Thank you so much xx

Review 126:Restaurant staff had limited English. Food and drinks quite expensive. No Wifi in room.

Review 127:Well located, beautiful little village. Room well appointed and clean.

Review 128:The Three Crowns is a lovely pub and B&B. We stayed in a standard room which was surprisingly large and comfortable. We had dinner in the restaurant which good value for money but you do need to book in advance.

Review 129:The shower was too small for a 6'4"man and we were ignored after supper , whilst we waited , in vain to order our coffee but in fairness, the receptionist refunded the drinks bill .

Review 130:The premises and location were perfect for the Cornwall pit stop. All but our restaurant staff were excellent .

Review 131:Everything, Hotel staff food location all of it was lovely, it was a great stop off as we were on our way to Cornwall. We would definitely stay again next year on our way to Cornwall. Great find Good value.

Review 132:Part of the rooms go directly on a open terrace where other guests drink and eat. When raining you need an umbrella to leave your room. Window of 0.5 x 1m could be opened only partially. Room smelled musty.

Review 133:Wifi not working Breakfast patchy Croissant had to be requested as they ran out Bacon not cooked properly and weak coffee Old brown wardrobe and dressing table that looked out of place. Trying for vi rage look but failing

Review 134:Evening meal Bed Bathroom

Review 135:The first room we were given was not up to a 5 star standard. We were moved to a much better room by very helpful staff, but were disappointed to have been presented with the room in the first instance. Discount given which was a nice good will gesture.

Review 136:Excellent breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. Lovely building with lots of character.
