Reviews for Olway Inn

Review 1:Very comfortable overnight stay with a really good breakfast. Room was clean. Inn itself is really cosy, dinner in the evening was vey good and reasonably priced. The local area is very historical and has a castle nearby to visit which overlooks some great views so lots of good photos.

Review 2:The only thing I can think of is the size of the room. The bed took up most of it and there was nowhere to sit except a small straight back chair.

Review 3:Completely laid back feel to the place. Excellent cuisine. Delicious Breakfast tnat I couldn't finish. Will return.

Review 4:Nice clean room with a couple of bottles of water supplied along with a Jar of sweets plus Biscuits with Tea and Coffee making facilities. Nice view overlooking farmers field. The hot and very spicy Chilli Con Carne in the Bar was excellent as was the Real Ale on offer. Will stay here again for sure.

Review 5:There was nothing we disliked.

Review 6:Very friendly and accommodating husband & wife landlords, well-chosen friendly serving staff, delicious burgers and sirloin steak dinners, happy coincidence of the Champion Beer of Britain (Aug 2015) being on tap (Cwtch, Welsh Red Ale), and the natives happened to be friendly and engaging, too! The room was comfortable and clean, and the full English (Welsh) breakfast more than enough.

Review 7:Only 10 minutes off the M4. Nice big breakfast Nice touches in the room such as bottled water, sweets & biscuits Even supplied an umbrella in case of rain.

Review 8:Our room was a bit on the small side and a little stuffy but for a short stay it would have been manageable!

Review 9:We loved the delicious home cooked food, the friendly welcoming staff and the location in such a pretty town! We also got upgraded to their one larger room!

Review 10:Excellent staff, lovely room with better extras than in most hotels. There was even an umbrella in the room and a jar of sweets. Can't wait to go back.

Review 11:Staff very accommodating, even though we arrived after the kitchen closed they rustled us up meals. Rooms very nice, clean and a comfortable bed with some nice touches (an umbrella for if it was raining, sweets in a jar). Lovely Welsh breakfast and top of all ... Alfie the rugby playing dog!

Review 12:Very welcoming and informal staff. The rooms were very clean, providing everything you could need. Our evening meal and breakfasts were excellent. Countryside views, as stated on their website - wonderful :)

Review 13:Although spotless the room was a little cramped and the television was very small

Review 14:Staff were very helpful and friendly, the room was spotless, food lovely

Review 15:We chose this Inn for a very special occasion but didn't realise that food being served at certain times didn't necessarily mean that the restaurant was open. It being Sunday, we had to settle for a meal in the bar for our occasion, (we'd found little in the surrounding area for an alternative) which was a let down for us. Though we enquired the times of serving maybe this was our mistake in not asking for the fine print. The room was very good in every way excepting it was a little on the small side for a few night stay.

Review 16:Good location for surrounding area & easy to find. Quiet surroundings, clean and great breakfasts. The breakfast staff were very friendly & helpful.

Review 17:Initially, not a very warm welcome. Would have been nice to have a choice of scrambled, poached or fried egg with breakfast.

Review 18:Very clean and comfortable. Food good.

Review 19:Nothing we didnt like. Would stay again. Would highly recommend.

Review 20:Food was excellent. Rooms were very clean and nice and warm. Couldnt ask for more had everything we needed. Staff were friendly and very attentive.

Review 21:Made to feel very welcome by friendly staff and locals. The food was to die for, excellent chef, would highly recommend! Looking forward to going back for a Sunday Lunch.

Review 22:Made to feel very much at Home, ideal location for S. Wales exploration... Great food and guest Beer.... Phenominal selection of Malts. Great clean room and even greater bed comfort.

Review 23:Nothing!

Review 24:We likes everything about the Olway Inn, the quality of the meals being outstanding and the staff extremely friendly. Cleanliness was excellent, as was the size and comfort of the room.

Review 25:friendliness of staff & locals. Within walking distance of Usk. Lots of interesting countryside within easy reach. Food & service were excellent even though Christmas parties had started .

Review 26:Lovely traditional inn with friendly regulars and great food. Matt and the front of house staff all very helpful and the chef Nicola's passion for her craft was evident in the excellent value food. We will be returning.

Review 27:Nicola and Matt are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are very comfortable and spotless. Fabulous food, good value for money; you need a large appetite to eat here!

Review 28:Please get some steak knives! The food we had in the restaurant was very good but the gravy was definitely made from granules.

Review 29:Conveniently placed for exploring the local area. Staff were very helpful if inexperienced as waitress's.

Review 30:Room was quite small.

Review 31:The room was very clean and well stocked. The bedroom & bathroom, although quite snug, was well designed with space for cases and bathroom bags. Nice touch having an umbrella in the room. Breakfast was great and freshly prepared.

Review 32:Our room was small but perfectly formed. The food was excellent, and speaking with the chef it was evident that she took a real pride in the dishes she prepared. The value for money was outstanding, and we will be back.

Review 33:When vsiiting South Wales on business, it always seemed appropriate to stay ovenight in Swaansea or Port Talbot. However, it occurred to me that if I stayed in Usk, I'd have the benefit of pleasant and convenient location and, when I woke up, I'd already be well on my way back to Yorkshire! The Olway Arms is friendly, comfortable, well equipped and is only a mile or so from the main road between Monmouth and Newport. The atmosphere in the bar is great, the beer and food are both excellent, and the landlord is ever-willing to help.

Review 34:Worth remembering this hotel is part of a pub so if quiet early nights are what you are looking for this would not be the ideal location....

Review 35:Friendly staff, nice atmosphere with excellent food. All made to order and definitely worth the wait.. Rooms extremely clean....shower room fantastic..

Review 36:The availability of taxis. We were given two numbers by the hotel. Neither were available on a Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning. Adviseable to have your transport arranged in advance.

Review 37:We attended a wedding in the local golf club at the other side of the village on a Saturday. We had trouble with getting a taxi so we left the car there and the hotel staff very kindly dropped us back to collect it in the morning after cooking a top class breakfast! When we came in from the wedding that night the pub was lively and the lovely bar staff offered us a free drink!! Lovely traditional feel to the hotel and we would recommend it to anyone! Thanks Olway Inn!!

Review 38:Although wifi is available I could only use it for a limited time on arrival. Our telephones also were not able to get a signal. This may be because of the location and not the fault of the hotel.

Review 39:Extremely helpful staff who went out of their way to please. The Olway is off the main road in Usk with good parking facilities and a quiet country atmosphere. Very good and ample breakfast. Good evening meal - cooked to order!

Review 40:The deafening sound while taking a shower coming out of the white shower box.

Review 41:Tea, coffe in the room. You can have a hot beverage without stepping out of the room. A jar with sweets was also a nice surprise.

Review 42:The food was really good, all freshly cooked and even some home-grown vegetables. very reasonably priced for the quality. The owners made us very welcome. Our room was clean and cosy. A little more space would have been nice, but taking into account this is a small country inn we were not expecting the room to be very large. The location was good, not too far from the main roads, walking distance into the pretty town of Usk and convenient to exploring the scenic countryside and mountains. Would stay there again if we are that way.

Review 43:Wi-fi in rooms not great

Review 44:Location is great - easy to get to and very peaceful. Breakfast very good indeed. Rooms quite small but very comfortable and lots of nice little touches to make them feel homely.

Review 45:Staying here one September night was one of the year's highlights for me - and I travel extensively across and around Europe and the UK. I arrived in the late evening, tired after a long journey and a heavy day, and was met with the friendliest of welcomes and one of the best pints of ale I've had for ages. I stayed for half an hour and read the paper in the bar and chatted with the owners, who, when I mentioned that I had left some of my toiletries elsewhere, immediately found me a toothbrush. Unlike many major chains, they wouldn't accept payment for it... They also offered to cook me something if I was hungry. My single room was immaculately clean and comfortable, with the nice touch of a jar of sweets for guests. The area is quiet and the hotel is situated on the outskirts of one of the most delightful villages in Wales, so I had a restful sleep, and my breakfast was perfect. These young people are making a superb job of what they do, and their hearts are clearly in their work. I would unreservedly recommend this to anyone who doesn't enjoy the impersonality of large hotels. If you want a commissionaire and 24-hour room service in a modern box, don't stay here. But if you want a genuine welcome in a comfortable, traditional hotel, with good ales and food, then don't miss it!

Review 46:Accommodation (incl Eng Bfst) is a bit pricey, as are the bar and restaurant menu's. We must not forget that this is a "Country Inn" and when compared to say "Court Coleman Manor", a beautiful Georgian Mansion set in it's own superb setting just outside Bridgend, is £10 cheaper per night if booked through "Living Social" + free bottle of wine when dining in at the restaurant (when booked at the same time) is not very competitive. Rooms also are twice the size of those at the Inn and facilities more refined. Not impressed with the Electric shower in the bathroom either.

Review 47:Location and quietness of lovely rural surroundings. Cleanliness of room and Inn. Friendliness of staff, Matt and Nicola are just great people.. Cuisine offered. Nicola's superb home cooking menu. Good selection of Ales etc at the bar. Nice restaurant eating area if one didn't want to eat in the bar.

Review 48:Can't think of anything which was not good - but visitors do need to be aware of the access into the bedroom area.

Review 49:Access from our point of view was good, although it does involve going up an external staircase to the upper floor for bedrooms. Breakfast was very good and staff pleasant. Nothing was too much trouble.

Review 50:stayed at the olway on numerous occasions and have always had a clean room and great food. Nic and Matt are great hosts and the breakfast is always good.

Review 51:1) a sincere, natural welcome. 2) for dog lovers this is underlined by meeting Alfreda. 3) chatting to Usk residents in the bar. 4) excellent parking. 5) a base for exploring a lovely town with its beautiful buildings often pointing to a rich history.

Review 52:Evening meal; good butchers quality meat but quick bar food recipes

Review 53:Very friendly, clean, a little small but extremely good value. Would recommend this hotel.

Review 54:The room was very small, we opted to leave our bigger luggage in the car and are glad we did as there was barely walking room.

Review 55:The room had all the basics and was a comfortable stay for a one night stop over on the way to Cardiff. The bar downstairs was very comfortable and relaxing, we spent most of the night we were there having a few drinks and dinner - the staff were very friendly and accommodating.

Review 56:Evening meal was good but not exceptional for the price. Room was small but fine for an overnight stay and very clean

Review 57:Great Location with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Although busy on a saturday night Staff were pleasant and attentive . Sunday breakfast was exceptional especially as it was part of the booked price. very good value for money

Review 58:Nothing to report.

Review 59:Everything really. Quiet rural location, great food, ambience, beer garden (on a warm evening). Clean, well appointed rooms ...and the killer draw for me ? ... black jacks and fruit salads in a sweetie jar.

Review 60:Nothing

Review 61:Very clean room staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent lovely curry and deserts are delicious. It was lovely and peasefuland nice to wake uplistening to the bird and the running stream.

Review 62:Rural location but within easy walk of Usk centre. My single room was spacious and well appointed. The food was very good. Warm sunny evening sat in the fragrant pub garden. Able to fully open windows in bedroom and very, very peaceful.

Review 63:Room on the small side but had all the facilities we could need including free wifi and bottled water.

Review 64:Evening meal and breakfast were excellent and staff very friendly and accommodating. Good car park and beautiful gardens. Great location too.

Review 65:No negatives whatsoever.

Review 66:We had a very pleasant stay here. Staff was most accommodating and organized a section of the bar where we had a family reunion of 12 people. The dinner was excellent and reasonable. The next morning the full English breakfast was delicious. Will definitely stay here again if the need arrives on our next trip to the UK.

Review 67:the ONLY thing I can even think of is that the toilet between the bath & the radiator is awkward to use, and in the winter could be quite uncomfortable if the radiator is on, but there's nowhere else it could go!

Review 68:Easy to find, and plenty of parking. The staff were all excellent, and even when the bar was packed, they still served everyone quickly, with the food coming in good time. The bread basket before the meal is a nice touch too. the food itself is excellent - the curry was HOT, and breakfast was cooked perfectly and arrives really quickly. the bedroom, while small, is well appointed and comfortable. Basically, a nice place to stay

Review 69:Outside metal staircase to rooms not ideal but not a problem for us.

Review 70:Pleasant and helpful staff, excellent evening meal and breakfast, linen table cloths and serviettes, bar atmosphere and local brew, complimentary bottles of water and jar of sweets in room and overall value for money. Would certainly stay again.

Review 71:Good food in the evening and an excellent breakfast. Comfortable double bed in quiet rural setting (the pub not the bed) allowed me the pleasure of a good nights sleep with the window wide open. This pub is only a five minute walk from the small town centre of Usk.

Review 72:Electric shower not very powerful Room was a little small

Review 73:Cleanliness of the establishment Cuisine Friendly staff Quiet location Fresh air spotlessly clean room Lovely food

Review 87:The cleanliness of the room & restaurant, the quality of the food, the attitude of the staff.

Review 88:great food and nice beer

Review 89:room creaked at night. I think it was the wind in the eaves and my room had a loft hatch.
