Reviews for Eight Bells Inn
Review 1:The shower in our room was pretty hopeless and couldn't hold a temperature or pressure. There was a bit of noise from the pub below but it wasn't too bad and stopped at midnight. We had the room right above the pub so others are probably better.
Review 2:The staff were excellent - very friendly and efficient. The bedroom was very cosy and it felt like an authentic Cotswolds experience. The cleanliness, comfort and facilities in the room were generally excellent. The breakfasts were fantastic - very tasty with a good range of options and very pleasant dining room. The location was perfect - right at the end of the High Street and parking was not a problem. We had dinner in the pub one evening which was superb. It is a fun and lively pub area. The food and service was first-rate.
Review 3:Soundproofing in bedrooms was poor. Be prepared to participate in next door's conversation if you are in room 5! Their bathroom was also immediately next to our room and you could hear everything!
Review 4:Staff, location, food.
Review 5:room 6 ! Hardly an ensuite - more a toilet and shower in a cupboard - and the shower only dribbled out water despite us obeying the instructions provided!
Review 6:Super food , helpful staff Room very clean
Review 7:There is really nothing I didn't like, the Eight Bells is great. :-)
Review 8:It is a lively Inn though the rooms are peaceful and set back from the bar/restaurant. The beer and food is excellent and there is a reasonable wine list. the chef was very accommodating when we went outside the menu with our requests and my gluten free requirements were easily catered for. The town center is literary around the corner from the Eight Bells and there are lots of beautiful places to see, cafes and restaurants for all tastes and a perfect place for a little Christmas shopping with the original Robert Welsh shop, a couple of interesting art galleries, an arts and crafts center as well as many other independent shops. the Eight Bells is the perfect place to stay for visiting Chipping Campden. We will be returning.
Review 9:The location is excellent, My room (No6) was charming with original features but modern furniture, very comfortable, clean, nice room temperature, the food was excellent and was fully booked. Residents are reserved. Lots of choice of ales. Breakfast was made to order. I hope to return for another visit soon.
Review 10:Loved the olde worlde retained charm of the place. The staff were absolutely lovely but unfortunately I didn't enjoy the food as much as I had anticipated as it didn't deliver in accordance with the description on the menu. I did comment on this but the young lady serving just said she would pass my comments on to the chef. I heard no more.
Review 11:Some noise could be heard from the above rooms.
Review 12:Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food was very good in the restaurant. Wise to book a table in the restaurant. Room was very comfortable.
Review 13:Excellent food. Within easy walking distance to all shops. Within easy driving distance to many National Trust properties and pretty Cotswold villages. Attentive and friendly staff. Fantastic shower in our cosy double room.
Review 14:There was no place to put our luggage while in the room. Very inconvenient. Having two luggage racks, one for each guest in a room, is really essential.
Review 15:The Romanian receptionist. Corrine, at the front desk, is a highly polished and professional person, who exceeded our expectations at every encounter. You are lucky to have someone of her calibre in your employ.
Review 16:Breakfast late and slow for a business traveller. Would help to make more available by self service e.g. Fruit & yogurt, croissants. Radio(s) on at breakfast. Clientele & staff chatter from back alcove below room although quiet 11:30 onwards.
Review 17:Comfortable room. Staff helpful for single traveller.
Review 18:It was a bit difficult to find being in a one way street that my car navigation program didnt have information about. A bit more information on the website would have been helpful.
Review 19:Fantastic location and very friendly staff.
Review 20:Ck-in staff not helpful. Rest. staff unknowledgeable about priest hole displayed in middle of floor. Several said,"I'm new" or "Not from around here." Parking availability terrible. Room noisy due to pub until midnight. More hotel/ business-like than welcoming B&B.
Review 21:restaurant good for breakfast and dinner. Room overlooked garden. Owner friendly..
Review 22:Very reasonable price, friendly owner and great location in town. The building is old (to say the least) but my room was clean albeit a little dark which was to be expected given the history of this place and the room's location below a beer garden. May have been visited by ghosts during the night (felt like people kept coming in and watching me sleep) but it might have been the champagne.
Review 23:Easy to walk into the village for shops and facilities. Interesting village itself - a pleasant place to spend a holiday and convenient to visit other beautiful Cotswold villages. The staff were helpful and friendly too.
Review 24:I loved the old world charm and good pub food. The bar has a good atmosphere. The breakfast is very good. It is a great place to stay to explore the Cotswolds.
Review 25:Best pub in town but food not "stellar" and quite expensive
Review 26:Great Pub, restaurant with rooms. We loved the room, very atmospheric (room 6). Smashing bar with food and separate restaurant. We always managed to park close by.
Review 27:The sofa bed was not good. The other (main) bed was perfect though. There was not much room left with the sofa bed out.
Review 28:Friendliness; breakfast. Atmosphere in the inn and the inn itself lovely.
Review 29:No reception desk, understandable in such an old building but there is no indication of where to go or what to do on arrival! No sight of the owners during our stay, looked after by enthusiastic young staff at the bar. Breakfast was great but took far too long to arrive & the conversations taking place in the kitchen during breakfast & dinner were unfortunate.
Review 30:The Inn is a beautiful old building with heaps of character. The bathroom was new & the shower fantastic! The staff were cheerful & generally helpful.
Review 31:Shower didn't work, TV remote didn't work, one member of staff rather impatient and unfriendly. Waited a long time for breakfast.
Review 32:Location excellent and food great, very comfy bed. With the exception of one, the staff were friendly and efficient.
Review 33:There was a noise early one morning probably the beer barrels being moved and it seemed as if the noise came from the room beside us. I dont like dogs in hotels even if it is only in the bar area.
Review 34:The Character of the Inn has been restored but not lost the original features. Nice clean and comfortable. We were impressed with the Breakfasts and evening meals. Very much enjoyed our stay.
Review 35:Bedroom was above the cellar which had a constant drone from the chillers and terrible noise when the fans kicked in very bad for your sleep
Review 36:Room was nice but
Review 37:The comfy big bed and the very good food! The atmosphere in the pub in the evening was great-busy and buzzing. We only arrived at 7pm, had a meal and left after breakfast but really enjoyed our stay
Review 38:No reception desk which is ok but there was no explanation of where to go to when you arrive. We wandered around for a bit before going to the bar, we were then directed to our room. The proprietors were never sighted, the Inn seemed to be run by junior staff who didn't introduce themselves. Listening to kitchen conversations did not add to the enjoyment of our meal.
Review 39:The Inn atmosphere was great. The bar was lovely & lively. The breakfast was great. It is a lovely old Inn in a good position.
Review 40:There is a closet but no drawer space to unpack your clothes.
Review 41:A fantastic 14th century stone building with a unique historic friendly atmosphere. Our room was a converted attic room with many original features. The bedroom and the ensuite bathroom were both spacious.
Review 42:Room is small for triple sharing. No lift so have to carry your own luggage up the stairs. This hotel is not value for money. Chipping Campden is not a great place among the Cotswoth to stay - quiet and just like any other villages. Not worth the "premium" that you pay to stay here. Wait for a long time for breakfast to be served.
Review 43:The friendly and helpful staff.
Review 44:My mistake but I paid the bill without checking correctly and then my husband noticed they had charged us for two extra wines :-( shame to finish our lovely stay on this note.
Review 45:Loved the spacious family room, cosy pub and dining room. Staff were very friendly and welcoming
Review 46:I was there when it was warm and sunny in June believe it or not. I would have liked a comfortable place to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine. Their back courtyard was really outback upstairs and with only picnic tables.historic
Review 47:I was intrigued with the idea of spending 4 days in an Inn that was 800 years old. I was prepared to sacrifice some comfort but that was not necessary .it was quiet at night even though the pub was functioning beneath me. Very comfortable bedroom and en suite with all the amenities. Great food, super breakfast and very authentic pub.
Review 48:If breakfast could have been till 10am that would have been a bit better and if they had check out at 12 instead of 11am.
Review 49:We stayed here for two nights and we enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were friendly, room was clean and bed was very comfortable. Food was yummy. Would definately recommend staying here.
Review 50:Our room was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was delicious. The location was excellent -- close to, but not on, the main street of Chipping Campden.
Review 51:Dinner was a disappointing. Cheese and onion fritter starter had a soggy potato centre which tasted little of cheese. Mains: a mean portion of ham was served with duck egg. Jerked lamb while tender was well under-spiced and bland.
Review 52:Comfortable bed Friendly, helpful courteous staff. Charming pub with great beer Nice cooked breakfast
Review 53:Out of our two week trip to Great Britain, this hotel was the one I was most looking forward to - and the one I was most disappointed in. We were not satisfied with the cleanliness of the room. The shower was pretty gross - didn't even want to step in to clean off. There were dead bugs in the ceiling lights. Enough small signs to make me uncomfortable with the level of hygiene. The room was quite small, but we were prepared for that.
Review 54:The pub and dining were excellent. The location was wonderful. Most of the staff was very helpful and friendly.
Review 55:It was difficult carrying 15Kg suitcases up thre steep stairs, but staff immediately came to the rescue.
Review 56:The staff, the room, the beds, the bedding, the food, basically everything
Review 57:Street parking can be an inconvenience as there is no designated area for guests.
Review 58:Very comfortable place, friendly staff, nice beer garden, very good food.
Review 59:I have been here twice now and both times have been excellent, the staff are really friendly, the rooms are lovely- clean, fresh and comfortable. The food in the pub is great as well- good quality english food, breakfast is great too.
Review 60:The room we stayed in definitely requires re-decorating and re-carpeting, the shower room also needs updating and all the mastic replacing
Review 61:The style of the pub, excellent breakfast and very good evening meals
Review 62:nothing bad to say at all (a first for me)
Review 63:Great food, great ambience. Helpful with local information regarding taxis etc. Made me feel welcome as a female lone traveller.
Review 64:Increasing local competition means the 8 Bells will need to iron out a few niggles to keep standard. Smallest double room 3 bathroom is in need of a refresh and update but you do get the quietest room. King room 6 is beautifully decorated and spacious but being opposite the kitchens means the whir of the fans with an open window can keep light sleepers awake.
Review 65:Great food in a superb location with a warm welcome are the key benefits of the eight bells.
Review 66:The only improvement I could suggest is a mixer in the bathroom for the hot and cold water taps.
Review 67:Lovely friendly staff and clean and comfortable accommodation.
Review 68:Noisy chatter beneath my window in a courtyard, but it is a pub essentially so I expect happy chatter and it ceased at 11pm. A facecloth would have been appreciated
Review 69:8 bells is familiar to me as a former CC resident. Pleasant friendly welcome Room spotless No nasty smells A good tea/coffee/choc /biscuit tray thank you
Review 70:My room was directly above bar area so noisy until customers left around mid-night. Also only window view looked into centre courtyard & directly onto kitchen ventilation ducting. But it was the only room available !
Review 71:Bathroom & facilities were excellent ; clean with plenty of hot water for a bath
Review 72:Only left full fat milk on the trays for you tea and coffee. Skimmed would have been much better. or even a choice.
Review 73:Very comfy room. Fantastic breakfasts with a huge choice. Bar meals great too.
Review 74:The staff went out their way to be helpful and they were really friendly and accommodating even they were extremely busy, open fire in restaurant was great
Review 75:Would have liked to be offered a table for dinner but when I asked they were full up. Had to go to another Inn down the road and had an excellent meal there.
Review 76:Location. Friendly service.
Review 77:The restaurant was rather pricy. Probably the upmarket location. All restaurants in village were as well...same reason I expect.
Review 78:Our room was spacious and had everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable.our ensuite was roomy everything worked well.Breakfast was very substantial with good choices...set you up for day ahead!
Review 79:Hotel was very clean and the staff very friendly, great location in the heart of the village. We ate in the hotel restaurant and the food was very nice. Would definately come back.
Review 80:Parking was sometimes an issue.
Review 81:The location was excellent as we could walk round the town in the evening. The room was very comfortable and the staff were super.
Review 82:The room was a little cramped with the sofa bed pulled out for the kids and our double bed. It was okay for one night but more than one night would have been too much.
Review 83:The location in town was great. The staff was very nice and helpful and the pub was a great place to eat (both for dinner and breakfast). The rooms were comfortable and a great base for exploring the Cotswolds.
Review 84:Superior king room has a beam which you have to duck under to enter if over 5ft 4 ish and same with one side of bed due to sloping ceiling which was ok but if you had mobility issues may be a problem. But was part of the character of the room which is what its all about really.
Review 85:Food, we had dinner and breakfast which were lovely. staff nice, room very clean and roomy. Although a pub no real noise from the bars.
Review 86:Only drawback was the internal wall seemed very thin as we could hear the TV and guests conversations from adjoining room.
Review 87:Friendly, welcoming staff made us feel at home. Room was large and very comfortable. Lovely breakfasts and good choice on the dinner menu.
Review 88:Hotel is a beautiful and traditional in a v quiet location. Rooms were clean and beautifully decorated. Staff were attentive and friendly and the food was delicious :)
Review 89:There was nothing not to like!
Review 90:Location was great, room was very cosy, clean and warm. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was superb and nothing was too much trouble. We will certainly be returning and would highly recommend the Eight Bells to everyone.
Review 91:Parking on street, not sure how this would be in the busy season. Restaurant food ok but expensive for what was well presented pub grub.
Review 92:Warm welcome and although we had a small room it was adequate for 1 night and had everything we needed.
Review 93:Only a minor complaint - I think our room was over the bar so some bar noise but didn't go on late
Review 94:Very friendly and helpful staff, nothing too much trouble. I booked here as it was my husband's 40th birthday and wanted somewhere special, we weren't disappointed. We also ate in the restaurant and the food was fantastic. I'm sad to say that I was so full there was no room to try pudding! The breakfast was equally amazing. We would definately stay again.
Review 95:We thought the rooms were a bit noisy, the people in the next room weren't very considerate thats all.
Review 96:The food in the evening was lovely fresh and very hot and a lovely atmosphere in the lounge area. Really chilled and a nice evening for relaxing .
Review 97:(No) parking; the thin walls in our bedroom; the shouty drinking games in the bar
Review 98:The wonderful location; the excellent food; the charming medieval building; the comfortable room (the extremely hot water!); the no-hassle free wifi
Review 99:Very cosy old pub, rooms were clean and warm. Pub offered great food for breakfast and dinner. Pub was in a beautiful village with a great atmosphere. Would definitely go back
Review 100:Don't know if the people in the adjoining rooms were particularly noisy or not. We could here quite a lot of noise through the party walls from 7.00am .
Review 101:Very friendly staff and management. Great bar and food. Very comfortable room.
Review 102:Incredibly friendly staff, real family atmosphere, the food in the pub is superb, I had loin of pork which was 5 star and of Gastro Pub status. The ambience is delightful, very comfy and large bedroom, couldn't wish for more. You must try this place.
Review 103:The location is excellent and the building has lots of character. There is an extensive breakfast menu and the veggie breakfast is very tasty. It is a lovely area for walking. I would highly recommend Chipping Campden for a mini break.
Review 104:Spacious bathroom with bath on legs. Large double bed and appropriately decorated room. Nice atmosphere and catered well for vegetarians at breakfast and in the restaurant.
Review 105:There was a good wifi connection in my room however this was only available in half of the room since the other half had no reception. To be fair my room was the farthest from the pub thus I believe the other rooms had no such problems.
Review 106:Very good location. Gives you a sense of a pure English pub. Very good breakfast. Very good sized room. There is no reception or lobby which was a bit disorienting at my arrival but the pub staff attended to all my needs and were really nice.
Review 107:We couldn't get the shower to work properly and had intended to say something, but everyone was so wonderful that we didn't even feel like talking about it. We enjoyed ourselves so much that the shower wasn't a big deal. Otherwise, our stay was perfection.
Review 108:Eight Bells was a highlight of our seven day trip through England. We were looking for a traditional pub meal/stay and Eight Bells definitely delivered. First off - it's always a good sign when the bartender shows you to your room. Instantly we knew this place was the real deal. We had the largest room which was loaded with charm. And the pub was bustling with some of the friendliest folks we'd encountered on the trip. (Plus dogs in the bar was a bonus! Probably one of the coolest things about the area.) Second - the location was fantastic. We were able to stroll the shops and take a hike through stunning hillsides and return to our centrally located hotel. It was perfect. Lastly, the food and drink were excellent. We had a wonderful dinner and an extremely charming fireside breakfast in the morning. Everything about our stay was a delight. If you're looking for a place to stay or stop during your Cotswolds visit - add this to your list!
Review 109:No real complaints but if you're picky...... Arriving lunchtime on a Saturday, there was no where to park near the hotel. The Wifi was quite poor (but did you really expect the designers to take that into account when putting in the 12" thick walls, 400 yrs ago?)
Review 110:The room was warm and had all that you needed. The restaurant and bar were the best for atmosphere in the village, but make sure you book at table as many were disappointed. The location was perfect for the village shops etc. and there are several easy countryside walks direct from the hotel.
Review 111:Not applicable
Review 112:We loved the location, the friendliness of the staff and the Inn itself. The breakfasts were just right and the dinners were excellent. We thought that the on street parking might be a problem but it was fine.
Review 113:Bathroom (not toilet) could have been cleaner, but I'm being picky now!
Review 114:Appearance, atmoshphere, character, room layout, free wifi, food and ale selection. Room was comfortable and catered for more than what I needed.
Review 115:The room was quirky, I loved the exposed beams and the bed was extremely comfortable The breakfast was good value with two courses and lots of choice.
Review 116:Bathroom not that spotless and generally could do with being refurbished.
Review 117:Location and they were very flexible when I suddenly had to leave, not charging full price for remaining of booking. Lovely breakfast
Review 118:Parking was only real problem found space outside but when moved found it difficult to park anywhere near on return
Review 119:Staff were all efficient and friendly breakfast was good with enough options room was good size and comfortable
Review 120:Everything was great.
Review 121:This charming old B & B is a very nice place to stay. The staff is friendly and helpful, the room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was generous and the 2 nights we had dinner at their restaurant were very good. Not only is it well located within Chipping Campden to walk in the area, but the town itself is very convenient to use as a base to see the area.
Review 122:Hard to criticise really. Wouldn't suit people looking for an action packed weekend.
Review 123:Quiest little market town like from a postcard. Perfect for relaxed weekend strolling around.
Review 124:Eight Bells Inn was a beautiful inn right in the heart of the Cotswolds. Our room was spacious and comfy. Others wrote reviews about poor water pressure/temperature but everything worked very well for us. The cookies (biscuits) they left for us each day were a nice treat. The pub is wonderful with great service and a menu of delicious foods. We ate there twice. Julie and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend.
Review 125:Lack3d any interaction from staff.Bed too low and uncomfortable.fairs to bedrooms very steep and difficult to cvarry cases for elderly people.Staff very brusque when refusing a request at dinner.
Review 126:Older World setting.
Review 127:Stayed in this wonderful pub in Aug 2014 for a night. Beautiful little town to stop and enjoy. The pub on a quiet street just around the corner from the shops, and nice people that run it. Loved having an excellent dinner and breakfast provided on premises. Would defo stop there again.
Review 128:Great place to stay and eat. Staff were brilliant, so helpful and friendly - couldn't do enough for us. Perfect location in a perfect town. Will definitely be visiting again!
Review 129:Our family room for 4 people was very small and out the back near rubbish bins
Review 130:Beautiful village, quaint little pub with lots of history, lovely staff. Great pub. Good walks in area with pretty views
