Reviews for Britannia Hotel Coventry

Review 1:Wifi doesn't work in bedrooms, in this day and age that's appalling. Car park is a goodly walk away, and costs £10 a day - but only 50p overnight. Bathroom stank of old urine, like a public toilet (that's a first for me, never had a hotel bathroom so grotty). The extract was filthy, with something encrusted on it, and the whole shower arrangement looked dull and old. I didn't like the look of it at all, so didn't use it. I just had a wash in the morning at the basin with the chipped and cracked surround. The soap provided is cheap and nasty. COLD, inadequate heating at night, I had to fold the duvet in half to try and keep warm with double thickness - and that was despite me sleeping in a tracksuit and thick fleece with the hood up. Cleanliness isn't very good, something was stuck to the tv remote, so I put it in a clear plastic bag, I didn't want to touch it. Everything looked grubby, I didn't want to walk around in bare feet - there were still crumbs on the carpet, and something spattered on the wall, presumably from the previous occupant. Tired and old decor, looked bashed about and very lived in. The corridors reminded me of the corridors in blocks of flats on council estates, except with carpet. Price, at £44 wasn't really cheap enough for this level of grot, but only staying one night, and it was very close to where I wanted to be. However, I don't think I'd stay here again, I think I'd pay more for a closer car park, a bit more heating and a cleaner bathroom.

Review 2:Location was very central, I was attending an event in the cathedral, and this hotel is very very close. Quick and efficient check in and out.

Review 3:You need to wear full set of clothing as false alarm keeps you up at night. Hotel rooms need a facelift.

Review 4:Value for money. Great staff. Even better location!

Review 5:Room in need of a bit of tlc - the curtains were falling off the curtain rail.

Review 6:Very helpful staff. I went down to reception to tell them that the outer double-glazing sliding window in my room was stuck open, and I had only been back in my room for half a minute when the maintenance man appeared.

Review 7:Bedrooms are very basic - shower wasn't working, no bathmat. Smelt of cigarette smoke. Alarm went off late at night as someone was smoking in the hotel. Food in restaurant is VERY limited and poor quality.

Review 8:Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 9:On the website they have written Internet access, but there is no internet in room. Only in reception area they have internet. Its cheating. They can mention that no internet access in Room to make it clear. Wierd!!! Much Disappointed.

Review 10:Good Location

Review 11:The bed was hard, I was in a room where I was woken by traffic. at around 4/5 am someone was vacuuming which also woke me up. TV wasnt tuned and the bath was a little dirty the toilet was coming away from the wall

Review 12:The staff were really nice

Review 13:Bed could have been more comfortable. Room was quite noisey but can be expected due to the area. Decor outdated but doesn't effect function.

Review 14:Good location, reasonable rates. Tea and coffee facilities and hairdryer in room.

Review 15:My partner was 6ft7 and he had to practically sit down in the shower so he would fit under the shower head as it wasn't adjustable...

Review 16:really reasonable price! Was really happy with what the money provided us. Location was fantastic- literally seconds from the uni campus! And minutes from the town centre! Just a walk around the corner!

Review 17:The shower head was smothered with limescale. On the toilet seat there seemed to be what appeared as dried urine stains. Generally the room smelt like something had decayed for a long time in there.

Review 18:The location was great.

Review 19:The cold tap in room 325 Squealed really high pitched everytime you went to use it . The breakfast I am sorry to say was abysmal not worth the price asked for . Cold Button Mushrooms - Tasteless sausages - Hard Cardboard like Bacon that was cold . I basically ate the Tomatoes as they were hot . Yoghurt had turned and was bitter .

Review 20:The staff were excellant - I would like to mention Kas who helped and was very informative.

Review 21:From the outside it looks really dirty and not appealing at all. Most of the decor was out dated but was in the preparation stages of a refurbishment.

Review 22:Right by the city centre so was a fantastic location.

Review 23:A traditional hotel (with bathtub though I didn't use it) and full breakfast. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Right in the middle of Coventry.

Review 24:only 1 thing wrong ...Was on night shift and you have to pay for car park ,so was costing over 10 pounds extra per day for parking..please note ,car park is not attached to hotel.

Review 25:hotel ,location, rooms all good value.

Review 26:Wardrobe doors don't close, half the lights dust work, half the RF channels didn't work. Couldn't control the heating. Constant ticking in the room. Arrived at 14:00 I asked for a non smoking room but they only had smoking. The room did smell smokey. Just a vey old fashioned hotel.

Review 27:The sheets smelled very clean. Plenty of space

Review 28:The rooms are shabby. The lights above the bed kept knocking into our heads so couldn't sit properly. The furniture is really shabby in the bedrooms.

Review 29:Location

Review 30:The room was a little shabby. The windows were so filthy we could barely tell if it was day or night. There was a definite lack of maintenance...the wardrobe door was missing! Under the loo rim was awful.

Review 31:Loved the location. Felt quite 'at home' by the time we left, as it was so easy to find our way round the city, due to the fact that the hotel is bang in the centre.

Review 32:Could use a facelift!

Review 33:Very central. Perfectly adequate room for short stay. Clean and comfortable - spare pillows and blankets in wardrobe. Bar prices very reasonable. Staff friendly and helpful.

Review 34:Waited at the desk form 25 minutes before anyone came to check us is and when some one did come they told us they had no rooms available before even asking is we had made a booking in which we did

Review 35:I had a stone cold shower! I've had warmer water out of my cold tap at home! The TV only received BBC1 signal - not that I was too bothered - I wasn't there to watch tv all night!

Review 36:It was convenient for my purposes. The hotel has improved slightly since my last stay. It looked cleaner and brighter but still needs updating.

Review 37:Noisy neighbours above my bedroom at 5am. Later told by receptionist it was the "Church". Assume Seventh Day Adventists.

Review 38:24 hour concierge. Hot shower.

Review 39:Hotel needs to be refurbished but more importantly staff needs to acknowledge a customer waiting to be served. That is the least a customer would expect.

Review 40:The hotel is located very close to the city centre. Bus and taxi transportation conveniently available.

Review 41:Poor staff attitude, dirty windows (Didn't need curtains!), noisey, it was a buidling site outside, bathroom dated, no hot water, poor wifi connection, a TV that should have been in a museum.

Review 42:Good location

Review 43:The price was more than 100 eur for one night for a modest room. Wedidn't get a double although it was confirmed by the booking. Thereare only two lifts. If a group arrives you wait for ages. The tv set wasa small old one (no lcd), it was tuned in a way that you could not seeinformation at the edges, only few programs. The room was not wellcleaned as we came and neither later on. The Reward program of the hotelchain was not known, the windows were not clean and made a terriblesound due to the blowing wind. A lower class hotel for high price

Review 44:The location is good for people visiting somebody at the university. Wecould take our little old dog with us - thank you

Review 45:I booked the hotel because it was in the city centre but next time I don't mind booking a hotel as 30mins away from the city As long as it gives me comfort, because Britannia hotel has no facilities no wifi, no heater, old rooms..it was a waste of money!

Review 46:Poor room condition. Cold room. Tired room with poor fittings. Poor bed. Rubbish TV. broken Remote control. No Internet access in room

Review 47:Staff were pleasant

Review 48:only was it once you arrive do they inform you there is road works through the night 1am the drill was going as it's not a residential area

Review 49:staff was happy and helpful

Review 50:I have no negative comments, the room was perfect.

Review 51:I found all staff encountered were helpful and courteous, more so as I am severely disabled on crutches.

Review 52:Being told to go to reception to pay for breakfast in advance - not allowed in until I had! Being asked on arrival in dining room for breakfast "What colour are you?" - assumed I was something to do with huge coach party, I wasn't Poor breakfast choice - so limited Noisy roadworks till 2.00am Broken toilet roll holder in bathroom

Review 53:Nothing

Review 54:Fire alarm went off about 9am hotel got evacuated. Well, I evacuated myself after the alarm kept going off. I only had 4 hrS sleep.

Review 55:Room was large, I stayed on the 6th floor.

Review 56:Very noisy, the wind goes through the windows and moves the curtans. Everything in the room was very old, especially the TV. We were 2 but they left us only one towel. The bathroom wasn't clean when we came .

Review 57:Very good location next to Coventry university.

Review 58:Looks horrible from the outside and not much better from the inside: furniture dated, faded and dusty. Bathroom cleaned only very superficially, hair in the sink on arrival and loo didn't flush properly.

Review 59:central location right next to the Cathedral, very friendly and helpful reception staff

Review 60:It's dirty, out of date and rough. Carpet had holes, the cleaning crew did not do a good job and had broken equipment. I've been to low rated hostels much cleaner than this. If I could give a one out of five I would, but there's no way of doing that. And the fourth floor caught fire. The staff needs to be more proactive in getting people out of the building .

Review 61:There was a fire alert and your staff need a lot more fire drill training. The evacuation of the building was haphazard, we all stood in the cold outside for about an hour, with no member of staff to comfort some who were scantily dressed. A sort of roll call was held, with no loud hailer. so it was extremely difficult to hear the names. When the staff member was asked to r e-check, he couldn't do so as he didn't have a pencil to tick the list! I missed breakfast and was only offered a cup of coffee. I was not aware that there were safety sledges on every landing to help disabled guests down the stairs..You may well have problems if health and safety check you out.

Review 62:Easy booking. Pleasant reception

Review 63:The room was not very nice at all really old fashioned, the bed was awful and hard. The carpet was so badly worn that you could see through it. Also during my stay a fire broke out in the morning we were woken by the alarm and someone banging the door screaming at us to get out. We were left on our own on the floor which i later found out to be where the fire was. also been trying to contact the manager for 3 days and still no response. Left earings in the room which i have been told are not there.

Review 64:NOTHING

Review 65:the evening meal had no taste at all. I was not able to have a shower on my second morning, because I had no hot water. the taps in the sink did not work properly. the men working outside were using jack hammers at 3am, so sleep was impossible. Overall I had a very disappointing stay.

Review 66:I only had to stay for 2 nights.

Review 67:Road works until 2.00am kept us awake. Our room (510) only had the outer windows in place - the inner panes were not there - making soundproofing non-existent.

Review 68:Excellent location. We were attending our daughter's graduation and wanted somewhere close to the uni and cathedral. Couldn't be better! The staff were, to a person, friendly and helpful.

Review 69:Restaurant staff were unhelpful and looked miserable! Breakfast was poor and crockery was dirty. I'd suggest taking meals in the city instead. Also, bring ear plugs - between revellers/dustmen/roadworks it's pretty noisy!

Review 70:Receptionist was very welcoming and helpful. 'Service with a smile'. I was able to book in early and room was very large and clean.

Review 71:Generally felt like the place needed a deep clean - it was grubby and another guest found a dead fly on a plate in the breakfast room. Noisy - people on phones in corridor outside my room after midnight.

Review 72:Reception staff and young lad in breakfast room were very helpful.

Review 73:I liked that I was able to have a smoking room as some hotels do not have this facility. The room was clean & there's was a bath & shower....again most hotels for standards rooms just provide a shower. I will be staying again. Checkout isn't until 11am so you are able to have a nice lie in....over all great stay.

Review 74:The hotel is very very tired and requires a major revamp.it seems typical of brittania hotels, good locations but tatty inside, ie the adelphi in Liverpool Breakfast is disgraceful everything was dried and cheap, which for £10 it shouldn't be

Review 75:The hotel is adequate

Review 76:I thought there was parking on site, but you use a public car park over the road. It is a bit dated and tired looking

Review 77:Position was excellent for a University visit. Breakfast was very good

Review 78:There was a bit of rubbish on the windowsil. Not a big deal at all, I just popped it in the bin.

Review 79:Beds really comfortable, nice little balcony, great location in the city centre, nice bar and friendly staff

Review 80:Water mixer (poor mixing of hot and cold water), broken cabinet (left hand door and the back side), no wifi in rooms.

Review 81:Kindness of the duty manager and the breakfast.

Review 82:Very overpriced for the facilities offered. No WiFi availability in room and TV reception very poor with only basic terrestrial channels. Room was comfortable enough but one door completely missing off wardrobe. I would stay there again if only for the easy access to city centre but the prices need to be adjusted to reflect what it actually offers. Over all pretty disappointed.

Review 83:Bed was very uncomfortable and 'pillows' were extremely thin...there was only one pillow each too. Decor very tired, net curtain fell down and not sufficient hooks in curtains. Shower curtain continually stuck to you in the shower. This hotel has potential and the reception gives a far better imoression than the rooms themselves. This hotel needs a refurb!

Review 84:Visiting our son at university. Location was excellent.

Review 85:No food after 10pm, attitude of reception staff, poorly made beds, continental room breakfast not arriving at all. Quite poor all round

Review 86:The walking distance to where I was working

Review 87:This place peaked about 30 years ago, and is in desperate need of an upgrade. The rate for this room is the worst value I've ever paid for a hotel in the entire world. But stayed there out of necessity due to location and no other options.

Review 88:Very good location. Friendly staff.

Review 89:My stay at the Britannia was far from what one would expect from an establishment like this. Walking into my room for the night, I was hit by a poor impression with stained carpets, damaged wall and paint peeling off the ceiling. This was followed by the joys of a TV straight out of the 80s but hey,I digress from the real issues. While the hotel cannot be blamed for the road works waking me up, they could however clear the dust off the windows and air vents and simple improve the overall cleanliness of the establishment. It could also do with new pillows as they were thin and simply past optimum. If none of these things bother you then it should be fine

Review 90:Rude staff, aging hotel bad decor, poor facilities will not return

Review 91:Very disappointing all round certainly not worth the money even at the vastly discounted rate

Review 92:Room was shabby and I paid on the Britannia website rather than an internet site requesting a double bath. I paid extra and was disappointed that I was not told prior to my arrival that I would be in a standard room as that would have affected my decision on the price.

Review 93:Located in central Coventry

Review 94:Bad experience on the breakfast. I had to wait 15 min for a table when there was free tables. The reason was because this tables was not for one person. I stayed more time waiting than eating

Review 95:The best of this hotel is the location, because it's in the center, not for the views.

Review 96:Room 420 - the curtains falling off the rail, the double glazing broken and unable to be shut, the toilet flusher not attached to the wall and the long female black hairs on both sides of my pillow

Review 97:Proximity to the cathedral and the shops

Review 98:The hotel was very untidy I.e paintwork, threadbare carpets, grout stains on the bathroom floor. It was very old fashioned. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. The stand that the 20 year old tv was on was lower than the bed so couldn't even watch it unless you sat on the edge. The staff were very unhelpful when we mentioned all of the above and I'm currently waiting to hear back from customer services towards getting a refund as we couldn't sleep all weekend as the bed was so uncomfortable and for the £187 I paid for 3 nights I was expecting it to be a lot better.

Review 99:the blocked toilet in the first room. The smell of damp and cigarettes in the substitute room. Ventilation in toilet and bathroom didn't work, and paint was peeling from bathroom ceiling.

Review 100:I could find nothing nice about the hotel, apart from it's proximity to the cathedral.

Review 101:Although the staff were very nice and helpful, the hotel is in such a bad shape that they were helpless. The sheets, mattresses and towels were threadbare and unclean. The outlets in our room did not work. The bathroom smelt like pee. Even though we were very tired, we could not sleep.

Review 102:This was a great location for Access to everything. Transportation, restaurants and shopping.

Review 103:Rooms are very dated and in need of modern refurbishment. Windows were dirty and didn't look as if they had been cleaned. Shower fitting was broken in bathroom. Tv very dated. No hot water.

Review 104:A city centre location of hotel is its main attraction.

Review 105:Did not find anything wrong

Review 106:Stayed 4 night location was great and the accomadation was clean and the hotel was spotless.staff and entertainment was super

Review 107:EVERYTHING, the people living in the hotel whom are acting all trashy and childish. I do not recommend anyone to stay in this hotel at all.

Review 108:There is nothing to be liked in this hotel.

Review 109:The heating only worked for 4 hours at night. The staff was very dry. The housekeeping was not at all satisfactory. It is extremely poor value for money

Review 110:The location only

Review 111:Carpet and armchairs very stained and smelly. Bathroom towels are not looking hygienic or clean. Windows very dirty and struck, though have good scene outside the windows, cannot open or see well. Overall inside the room very old and stained.

Review 112:Very close to anywhere in Coventry. Room service personnel nice and quick response.

Review 113:A little dated but clean.Far too hot at night, unable to regulate. Very noisey there most have been a disco on untill the early hours...could hear very clearly and we were on 4 th floor! Not enough pillows and the curtains didnt cover the dirty windows.

Review 114:Ideal for the university, cathedral and museums.

Review 115:Was told there was free parking on booking. When I arrived was informed that there is no parking you have to go and park where you have to pay and also few minutes away at your own risk???

Review 116:Near town Center and few interesting places.

Review 117:I arrived at 1 o`clock in the morning as forewarned during myreservation to be met by a miserable faced receptionist who didn`t havethe decency or politeness to say good morning. I was the given the keycard to my room, whch was substandard in many ways. First, the bedwasn`t comfortable and there appeared to be a black sticky stain nearthe pillow on the sheet. The room was noisy, and the toilet bowloverflowed everytime I flushed it. There was no no shower gel in thecontainer, and the carpets were tatty and threadbare.

Review 118:The beds were as hard as rocks - so uncomfortable we couldn't sleep. The tap in the bathroom was almost coming off when you tried to turn it on. Hotel looked very dated.

Review 119:It was clean

Review 120:Heating system was on a time clock so very cold during the day until 7pm. Shower was lovely and warm but sprayed everywhere.

Review 121:Marvellous central location just by the Cathedral. Good braekfast

Review 122:I booked 1 room for 1 night in booking.com and paid 165 pounds it was very expensive and when I arrived in hotel they told me our rate 50 pounds And why did booking.com charged you 165 pounds so from today I will not book hotels from booking.com

Review 123:It was bad from walking through the front door - terrible attitude form the girl on reception - rude and unfriendly. To be charged £170 for one night while others were paying just £40 (contractors) makes it a joke. Place needs to be ripped down and to start again....with totally new staff.

Review 124:Leaving!

Review 125:Noise from street during the night. Rude bar staff - refused without apology to serve drinks (after check-out while waiting for bus). Grubby exterior. Tired bathrooms. Very stinky lobby toilets.

Review 126:Good reception welcome and help. Location in city. Left luggage facility (while waiting for bus).

Review 127:Room carpet and bathroom floor not particularly clean. Breakfast:table tacky,in need of a good scrub;bacon, eggs and rest of buffet breakfast had been standing too long and become rubbery.

Review 128:Convenient location. Room a nice size.

Review 129:The only thing this place had going for it was the distance to thehistorical areas but please...whatever money you are saving by pickingthis hotel..ITS Not worth it. Here is a run through of what Iexperienced- Heat that is timed to only is turned on for 2 hours at night and 2 hours in the morning. The cleaning staff left my windows wide open and turned the room into an ice box that I was never able to get warm. - Breakfast at the lobby restaurant called "The Bentley" (the restaurant that stole the logo from the Bentley car) was gross. The sausages looked like prunes and I watched one of the staffers drop utensils on the floor, look around to see if anyone saw her and then proceed to set a table with them. However the cherry on top was the crusted food on the plates and glasses...eww. I asked for money money back and left after 3 minutes of seeing all this. - Loud party noises all night and sex noises all morning. My walls were literally shaking. I called the night porter twice, heard him come by but then everything resumed seconds after he left. Why weren't these people thrown out? - No wifi (not even for sale) in the hotel rooms. Only in the first floor lobby. - A phone in the room that does not work - Possibly a 50 year old mattress and the worst bed making skills I have ever seen. - I am convinced that instead of cleaning, this place just slaps a fresh coat of paint on things and calls it a day. - Loud traffic noises that were heard from outside my window - 3 elevators that operated like they hadn't been inspected in years. I hate to beat on a business but the owner of this place is a total slum lord when you look around.

Review 130:Nothing!

Review 131:The hotel could do with a substantial refurbish. The windows look as if they have not been cleaned for 20 years. The management had to be repeatedly chased to repair a non-flushing toilet.

Review 132:The pictures on the website made this hotel look a lot nicer and newer than it is! Very deceiving pictures! The hotel had a strong smell of damp especially when you stepped out of the lift upstairs! Also we met a girl in the lift who LIVED there ...(she was wasted) summed up the kind of hotel it is to me!

Review 133:However, the location is perfect. The lobby is nice and modern! Staff are friendly and helpful and the room was clean (despite needing updating and smelling strongly of damp)

Review 134:I saw the cleaning how it was done, very unhygienic. One or two counter staff was very rude and the dining staff seems to have lost their smile somewhere, very rigid

Review 135:Only the location

Review 136:The breakfast was very expensive especially if you did not want a full cooked meal. The choice for continental breakfast was limited. The windows were very dirty on outside.

Review 137:Very central location. Easy to get to for travelling by train as bus stops at hotel

Review 138:Excellent location in the centre of the city. Just minutes walk from the catherdral, bus station, great shopping, restaurants. Extremely friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable, spacious room. Would certainly stay here again!
