Reviews for Prince Of Wales Hotel
Review 1:Glad we only stayed one night couldn't bring ourselves to even have a shower as the bathroom felt like lone you would find in a hospital/ old peoples home !! We just went home. Paid £99 pounds for it too
Review 2:Travelled with our little grandson so we could stay over after the pantomime. The hotel served its purpose and that's all
Review 3:Having paid for an executive double room the first room we were offered (room 110) was far below what I considered acceptable After complaining to reception we were offered room 322 which was more in keeping with our expectations Room 110 was cold and had visible damp patch on the wall at the orial window also paintwork was flaking on windows was really disappointed to be offered such a room in the first place Dining room was a little crowded for breakfast.
Review 4:Staff were friendly and pleasant Breakfast was good but a little on cool side
Review 5:Only one negative on our stay this time,we returned to our room after our evening meal and it was freezing cold (radiator not working) informed Reception, told they would have a heater placed in our room. Returned later and no heater in room, reported it again to Reception told heater on its way, never did receive heater so had to sleep in very very cold room in mid January..
Review 6:Stayed at Prince of Wales last August for two nights and enjoyed our stay But glad we only booked one night on this occasion.
Review 7:Decor very dated. Smelt of smoke. Tv was from the 80's. Bathroom was old, pillow case had blood on. Generally awful in every way and not you would expect from such a large hotel. Would not stay again.
Review 8:Location
Review 9:Food not hot enough and some looked very unappetizing, the dining room was cold in the morning.
Review 10:Hotel is on Lord street so central location. Rooms were large and airy. The male singer on the Saturday night was very good and had a nice voice. Lovely open fires in the lounge area.
Review 11:the food it's awful but plenty of places to eat in Southport so not a problem
Review 12:had to change our room as it was rather small but lady on the reception JADE was extremely helpful found all staff to be friendly
Review 13:The TV channels are 'very' limited. The late night channels are 'dire'. Really lets the hotel down in my opinion: I don't go away to watch TV but I like to watch it late at night, due to having the opportunity for a lay in the next morning. No mushrooms for breakfast also the ash brownies have been taken off the menu?
Review 14:This was an additional date booked: to coincide with a dance weekend already booked. The woman on reception was extremely helpful and very pleasant, making checking in easy as well as speedy. Also the member of staff in the morning, successfully, tried her utmost to make the transition from one bedroom to another (other nights booked with out dance school), as early as well as smooth as possible. Having visited this hotel for many years, (over 10 years), it seemed to have had a revival. Whilst being busy welcoming new people each day, it was equally matched with, what appeared to be; extra staff on duty. This also catered well for departing guests There was a real uplifting buzz about the hotel this year, (commented on many other guests), it really lifted the atmosphere to a feel good factor: without being noisy.
Review 15:We received an amazing deal. The 'Prince' retains a real old world charm. It was a cold, wet day but the coal fires welcomed us in the vestibule. The bar prices are very good. The breakfasts were excellent. You couldn't get better value anywhere.
Review 16:food not good room cold on arrival central heating pipes made a noise room looked out onto rubbish strewn back street
Review 17:public rooms were clean and comfortable there was entertainment good bar
Review 18:Bed is not comfortable as it has a spring mattress, Hotel front door closes from 11 pm to 7 am, has to ring the bell a few time before someone come and open the door. A card key activated door would be great.
Review 19:Location is great right at the town Center, staff are great and the Hotel itself as I love old historical building.
Review 20:Breakfast was to busy had to que tables for four should be for two far to cluttered thermos flasks for tea and coffee on the table for ages before so not very hot and not nice tasting
Review 21:Overall good for the price
Review 22:Well, the radiator in the room did not work, so it was pretty cool. However I had anticipated this, so brought an electric fan heater with me, but I suppose alot of people wouldnt be as prepared. In fact the corridors were warmer than the bedrooms. The breakfast was not very good. Tea and coffee were warm, not hot, and the toast was limp. Other food - savoury food which should have been hot was luke warm at best and the porridge tasted and looked positively like sludgy cement mix. I usually buy the cheapest cut price porridge from the supermarket and it tastes better than this stuff did, even with milk and yoghurt. There was some complimentary shortbread in the room, and that tasted like cardboard.
Review 23:Hotel was full of character, beautiful architecture, lovely grand hall and staircases, and ballrooms. Loved the classic old sink and cast iron bath. Staff were very friendly. The decor was old fashioned and the place probably needs refurbishment, but to us this added to the character of the place, but it wouldnt be to everyones taste.
Review 24:There was nothing in particular that we disliked.
Review 25:The christmas and new year atmosphere. The little extras laid on. Box of fudge and miniature drink. Mints mince pies etc and lovely welcoming coal fire
Review 26:creaking floors, rooms need renovating, some staff offhand, place generally in need of updating and decorating, dining room overcrowded for breakfast.
Review 27:good position in town, parking good.
Review 28:Tired appearance, although it appeared to have been more recently refreshed. The view from our room was of an inner courtyard and service area. We didn't eat there this time following a previous disaster which included a carvery & buffet dinner where the food had obviously been kept warm for some time. The meat was dried and the vegetables mushy. A pasta meal was similarly poor and congealed. When we complained the manager was indifferent and condescending. We since found an excellent little Italian tratorria next door.
Review 29:good location, clean & comfortable room, excellent value for money
Review 30:Paid extra for superior room but it was just ordinary.
Review 31:Very friendly,efficient staff.food enjoyable,good selection.nice,cosy sitting area with log fires.
Review 32:Shower would not cool down, no bath mat so floor very slippery. Only allowed one cup of tea or coffee a day as only supplied with one each. Had to buy extra milk and tea bags! Mattress uncomfortable and very dated decor.
Review 33:Location excellent, very clean friendly staff.
Review 34:The practice of serving tea in vacuum flasks for breakfast is particularly poor. Also, the quality of tea is suspect.
Review 35:Entertainment particularly good with Alan Henry. Other solo entertainers third rate.
Review 36:Rooms were looking very tired. Bed was hard, quilt very thin and heating not on. There was a stale smell throughout . The breakfast was very basic and obviously cuts had been made. Not many guests so toast could have been made on demand whereas it had been done and left under hot lights to keep warm so it was rock hard. Everything just felt poor quality from cereal to jams. Tea and coffee was already on tables in keep warm jugs so no idea how long it had been there.
Review 37:Welcomed by staff very friendly. Excellent location for southport very central. However the price we paid was very reasonable for one night bed and breakfast.
Review 38:Room was clean and comfortable. Parking was cheap and helpful. Let us use parking facilities even after we checked out while we went shops. Budget price for a lovely hotel.
Review 39:the hotel is in dire need of refurbishment. the photos on booking.com are misleading and do not represent the 'executive double room' we booked. the room was awful and we asked to move to one of the rooms in the photos. These were suites and so not available. the alternative rooms were also bad and in the end we stayed in a room that at least looked a bit clean but was last refurbished in the 1980's. we had booked for 3 nights but only stayed one night. Also other guests ignored the smoking area and smoked right in front of the entrance which was unpleasant. all in all the hotel looked care worn, the fixtures and fittings were shabby and/or broken. wouldn't stay there or recommend it in it's current state.
Review 40:the member of staff did his best to try to resolve our complaints
Review 41:Nothing to dislike
Review 42:Warm professional welcome .Lovely old Victorian Hotel. Stayed many times. Lovely meals.Warm comfortable rooms. Cannot understand some people grumbling.Yes, the Hotel is a little tired. It is old, that adds to the charm of the place. It is so big and under the circumstances the Hotel does itself proud. We stayed here last week B,B and E meal 1 night for less than £55.Amazing deal. This Hotel does not fleece you. If you want less personal service ,expensive, nothing out of the ordinary meals ,and pay over £100 a night I could recommend a Hotel on the Promenade. Have a lovely Christmas and prosperous New Year to the Hotel and wonderful staff.
Review 43:Room 100 when it rained it sounded like a tap running all night, Chines torture. Still not much you can do about that. Television in the room was a shambles.
Review 44:Décor, Staff, Location, Car Parking was a great help.
Review 45:Historic Hotel, Warm and cosy, welcoming polite Staff, Lots of character and creaking floor Boards. Great location near to town center close to popular pubs and restaurants.
Review 46:I know some reviews mention it could do with updating etc. etc. But we have been lots of times and value for money - Oh YES! Give me the POW aagainst the plastic hotels anytime!
Review 47:The staff - nothing is too much trouble Car parking - loads of it
Review 48:At £38 for what I received, there's no cause to complain even if there were some dislikes.
Review 49:All the bad reviews are a lot of fuss about nothing. Yes the hotel is a little tired but its full of character. My room was big (sofa, table and chairs etc) and nice n warm. Location was spot on and the on site car parking a mere £2. All this for the princely sum of just £38. Total bargain.
Review 50:Springs protruding through matress in the bed in room 216. Corridor wall leading to room a disgrace, requires plastering and painting. Very cold in lounge after 8pm; no coal to put on the fire and guests not in with the entertainment had to sit in the cold
Review 51:All the meals were very good with excellent service from the staff.
Review 52:We booked a disabled room but did not get one, and where placed asfar from all the facilities as is possible. Also being charged forcar parking. Restaurant was not disabled friendly (steps to get toserving bar).
Review 53:Reception staff especially Jade who put a bottle of red wine in my room for my birthday male receptionist , bar staff and waitress in lounge all very helpful and friendly . Will be going back again in January sales as hotel near all the shops! Fires great decorations lovely , xmas background music creates a nice homely festive feel !1 Well done Brittania xx
Review 54:The food wasn't to a good standard, could have been more variety.
Review 55:The welcome on arrival with a roaring fire, the staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 56:Pillows very hard also mattress hard. Only stayed 2 nights. Could not stay more than that due to mattress being uncomfortable
Review 57:A lovely atmospheric hotel.
Review 58:not being able to contact the hotel reception by phone, when making the booking.
Review 59:cant say as I liked anything, it was only just good enough. Our only view "slate roofs" didn't help.
Review 60:I loved the old building and the open fire in the lobby. Very old worlde. The lobby furniture was a bit shabby and the cream chairs looked a bit grubby. But overall we liked the place.
Review 61:Something or pne has had a pets in that room
Review 62:My room was not clean enough. .I am allergic to pet hairs and found shortness off breath and wheezing. Plus my bathroom mirror waa left with a message of a heart am arow through it just goes to show not clean enough for my liking
Review 63:No wifi in room & big back tv
Review 64:Great value for money hotel with a fantastic Central location. Our room was spacious and comfortable, tv could do with updating but it gave us a giggle. We would defiantly return.
Review 65:When we arrived back after midnight the door was locked. We rang the bell twice, no answer. Rang mobile number given, no answer. Eventually after rattling the doors, a member of staff let us in.
Review 66:Lovely big room and comfortable bed.
Review 67:some of the furnishings in the reception lounge area were very uncomfortable, mainly due to the age of the furniture. I complained about the soup being watery which also meant tasteless and only received a comment the chef would be told about it.
Review 68:We were able to take our dog. we booked room only which allowed us to eat whenever we wanted and wherever we wanted.
Review 69:Tired, tacky hotel that has seen better days. Threadbare carpets, dirty windows. Dis-organised front desk of hotel. Christmas decorations and music in mid November. Ice cream freezer in the front foyer of the hotel. Paintwork in the room cracked and discoloured. Noisy pipework in room and on the hotel landing. TV not working properly. Chips for breakfast says it all. Charmless hotel with no endearing features.
Review 70:Not very much. Probably the breakfast which was okay.
Review 71:Connecting room had been sealed off using a thin piece of sheet material such as plywood. This allowed us to hear every word spoken in the adjoining room as though they were in our room we asked to be moved to another which was facilitated. The room was comfortable but the floorboards creaked so much I felt sorry for the people below us. Whilst the ballroom and conference rooms were beautifully decorated the bedrooms and corridors were very tired to say the least; if these were brought up to the standard of the ballroom etc then it would be superb
Review 72:Reception staff more than helpful, breakfast delicious, warm and comfortable room, lovely coal fire in reception, can't wait to return, lovely quiet hotel, exactly what we wanted
Review 73:Could hear the people in the next room. There was an adjoining door which had been sealed but allowed conversations etc to be heard.
Review 74:Spotless and in excellent location
Review 75:Room smelt a little bit damp. Car park was full all the time we were there.
Review 76:We had a large, very warm and comfortable room with en-suite. Really good breakfast.
Review 77:Nothing
Review 78:Enjoyed our stay in this lovely Hotel, the suite was spacious with a beautiful four poster bed, and a large bathroom. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 79:Great location, warm, friendly and efficient staff. Stayed with my grandchildren aged 11 and 10, they loved it , especially the food!!. Nothing was too much trouble and it was obvious that other guests were regulars.
Review 80:The plumbing system needs sorting noises from the plug holes in the bath and sink was sometimes unbearable at times wouldn't take much to be sorted
Review 81:Well situated. Friendly people. Comfortable and clean room. Bar prices good.
Review 82:I think the hotel has seen better days and is a little tired now - could do with refurb. Thin walls too - I could hear voices in neighbouring room.
Review 83:Excellent price & location for business trip to Royal Birkdale
Review 84:Booking in the lady was polite and friendly when we went into our room it had two single beds (we booked a double rang reception lady apologised and gave us a double room. room was good. On the second night we ate in the restaraunt the food was lovely and great value 3 courses for £9.99. The décor needs a bit of a makeover bit tired, but I love those stairs. I am a bit fussy about what i eat and cleanliness is a much I would give the Hotel ten out ten for both, My partner also enjoyed our stay. :):);)
Review 85:Afternoon coffee could be improved. No black pudding with breakfast on this visit, you have usually served the best black pudding ever tasted other than that hahaha we will be bavk
Review 86:This was our 3rd visit the staff have always been welcoming, hotel is very clean, some decor is tired and need of updating but that would reflect on the cost. Food is excellent, afternoon coffee could be improved, on the wholewe will be back
Review 87:Very noisy rooms inboard of hotel overlooking ventilation systems which also produce smells from kitchens etc. Creaking floorboards from floor above disliked. Very poor and antiquated TV selection!
Review 88:Location and close proximity to buses and railway station etc
Review 89:old hotel but they have renovated the rooms what is good . just pensioners inside
Review 90:price and location, it is not the first time when i stay there and i do not mind to come back as it is really cheap. no wi fi in the room
Review 91:We booked an executive room and it was very poor quality. After complaining we changed rooms but again this room was not executive quality. As we were only there one night we gave up and put it down to experience.
Review 92:It was in a good position
Review 93:Not sure of reason for 3pm check in or 10am check out (both later than I would've liked)
Review 94:Really pleasantly surprised, given some of the other reviews Re state of repair. The hotel is older but is very well kept and the facilities in the room are exactly as you would expect - clean, reasonably modern and quiet. We had two rooms in different parts of the hotel (one newer part one older) and both had either a very large living area or large bathroom. Staff were very friendly, breakfast quick and efficient. A pleasure to have this as a base whilst discovering what Southport has to offer
Review 95:There were boards screwed into the ceiling to cover a leak. There was a leak from the room above that sprayed onto the window every time someone ran the water. TV control didn't work, to say this was meant to be an executive room it was very disappointing and definitely not value for money
Review 96:We booked breakfast in the price. It wasn't good , porridge was tasteless, eggs looked like 2 days old, they can certainly improve on that I'd give breakfast 4 out of 10.
Review 97:The hotel was very comfortable, friendly staff ,
Review 98:Felt like we had only half a room this visit , no room for a small table and easy chairs! Wardrobe door fitted badly, couldn t just push it closed it kept swinging open. Menu always the same. Wouldn t like a room which a pet had inhabited.
Review 99:An easy going atmosphere. Visited many times before.
Review 100:Like many older buildings, the hotel could do with refurbishing but as a consequence I suppose the price would rise.
Review 101:We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is well positioned for Lord Street, the Station, the Shopping Precinct and the Promenade.
Review 102:1 towel in the bathroom, the bed was something out of a concentration camp, the room was just so old I don't think it's been decorated since before the war, as for the price, I have been in some excellent hotels for far less than this dirty place.
Review 103:The staff,,they need to be employed by a hotel such as the Ritz, they are wasted in this pit.
Review 104:We couldn't control the radiator in our room so was very hot all night.my daughters radiator didn't work so room was cold at night.
Review 105:Chef went out of her way to accommodate my daughter who is wheat and dairy intolerant.hotel was in a great position.we had 3 rooms and all were a good size
Review 106:T.V only had 5 channels had to keep turning ariel to get good picture remote didn't work. Outside view was at back of hotel could only see next door yard. Room cold not enough radiator
Review 107:Location excellent, staff very nice good with dog. Upgraded to executive room for free
Review 108:Booked an executive double - was put into room 308! This room was filthy, decor was dated, was small and the chairs were stained with god knows what! Asked if there had been a mistake as nothing at all looked 'executive' about the room. Was moved to 202, this was bigger but just as run down. Peeling off wall paper, damp under the window and stained seats! Staff were rude - complained to the 'manager' and he stood there like he couldn't care and didn't even apologise.
Review 109:The best part was checking out!
Review 110:The hotel is very tired and needs a total refurbishment. The decor must date back to the 1970/80s. The staff were helpful and friendly. The dining room was very unappealing and the food basic; the dining chairs were showing wear and tear as were many other features in the hotel.
Review 111:Location only and car parking
Review 112:The room was very noisy presumably from the lift or air conditioning unit?? The wallpaper was damp and hanging loose but overall the beds were comfy and clean. The view was none existent!
Review 113:The staff were all pleasant and helpful, the choice of breakfast was fair although fresh fruit would of been nice not catering tubs of effectively tin fruit cocktail.
Review 114:I booked a superior room. The room was cold when we arrived. It was dusty & dingy, hole in the wall, cracked tile in the bathroom, very small pillows, poor quality quilt, no complimentary biscuits or bottled water. Old fashioned TV. Radiators looked very badly bodged. Also staff & guests smoking at one of the entrance's very smelly. The hotel looked very tired worn carpets, décor dirty, needs a really good clean everywhere.
Review 115:The evening meal, was average for the price
Review 116:Worst night sleep ever had in a hotel, very poor standards we were in a room with a connecting door which was not sealed therefore we heard next door who where profoundly rude and swore constantly and all night which ruined our stay as we couldn't get any sleep and were so upset out young daughter had to hear such obscenities. AVOID THIS HOTEL
Review 117:Leaving the hotel
Review 118:Car park was always full, necessitating parking on the local roads. Fortunately as a disabled badge was used this didn't cost any more, but would have otherwise. The breakfast was awful. Cheap ingredients and slightly chaotic. But was only £4.50 each so can't expect too much.
Review 119:Room was big, clean and reasonably comfortable.
Review 120:The Prince of Wales does get mixed reviews, which probably comes down to what one expects from a hotel and whether one is getting value for money. We had a good-size room, a good-sized bathroom, comfortable beds and a good breakfast - for £69 a night. That was fine. It is getting tired in places and the way meals are provided means that there is a lack of personal attention, but it was good value.
Review 121:We had a super visit, the room warm and cosy- the windows opened and the radiator was controllable! The staff bubbly without being over the top! Excellent all round!
Review 122:The location is central right on Lord Street which is the main shopping street with shops, cafes and bars. Hotel is charming with bags of character and very comfortable. Parking very cheap.
Review 123:The hotel was in a poor state with tired furniture, worn carpets and social functions going on late at night right above my room where it stopped me going to bed when I wanted.
Review 124:Price for two rooms
Review 125:Bathroom stank from time to time, smelt of drains after flushing toilet & running water. Breakfast cereal variety not impressive, no obvious choice of honey & jam.
Review 126:The location was perfect, good atmosphere, nothing was below good standards.
Review 127:Couldn't open window more than 2 inches baking hot in room
Review 128:Where it was situated Staff were really nice Upgraded us to bigger room because we had 2 dogs would hate to have seen smaller room though
Review 129:Old dated rooms, cheap mattress, boiling hot room, window in bathroom was painted shut, window in the bedroom hardly opened at all. Tv so old.
Review 130:towels were provided, parking was only £2 a night, close proximity to where we needed to be. Late check in.
Review 131:We paid for executive rooms as this was a business trip. My colleagues room (double exec) were far from executive and one of the rooms cost £74.00, which is absolutely disgusting. Nothing like the pictures on your website.
Review 132:The location.
Review 133:Honestley we had a booking at the scarasbrick to which when we arrived they had messed the booking up told us they were fully booked but they had got us a room at the prince of wales which had gone from £ 168 flr 2nights to £115 for 1 night totally ripped off
Review 134:When we were asleep
Review 135:large hotel in need of some TLC stayed in room 215 didn't sleep well heard humming all night from heating/boiler..
Review 136:staff friendly and helpful...
