Reviews for Red Lion Inn

Review 1:Motion detection bathroom light, very dangerous, did not sense ones presence when using shower and lights went off after 1min 37secs, !

Review 2:Comfortable bed, spacious room.

Review 3:Just the smallest of things, I would have loved the fire to be lit for breakfast time.

Review 4:Lovely stay as a quick break after Christmas. Very quiet due to post Christmas festivities, but that suits us perfectly. Pleasant and courteous staff with quaint surroundings and a lovely open fire to sit and relax next to. Food at dinner and breakfast was good and plentiful.

Review 5:No real dislikes but generally a bit underwhelming - very small room with no comfortable seating. Noisy plumbing. Traffic noise. Not really very good value for money.

Review 6:Friendly, helpful staff. Quite good dinner and breakfast. Parking. Central location.

Review 7:We did book a small double but with both of us being tall and well built it did feel a bit like being in a dolls house up in the eaves as we had to stoop to navigate into bed/around the room.

Review 8:A beautiful old inn with lots of character. A lovely breakfast, quaint room and good location.

Review 9:Staff were friendly and professional, service was excellent as was the food at both the evening meal and breakfast. As there is a free car park this allowed us to explore Chipping Campden without worrying about parking expenses.

Review 10:Menu on hotel website is in .pub format, which I couldn't open (.pdf would be more universally readable). However, it's worth taking a chance - food choice and quality was excellent

Review 11:Manages to combine the feel of a pub with the comfort of a hotel. Warm welcome from staff and willingness to help

Review 12:The Room was cold (very cold day) when we arrived as the heating seemed not to have been on all week. The one radiator was not sufficient to warm the room either once it was on, despite it getting hot. They should have thought about the weather and the effect on a room in the Eaves. Also, the double bed was as squeaky as a Church full of mice and needs replacing.

Review 13:I clicked for a twin room on booking.com but was told I had booked a double room at the hotel. The hotel did quickly convert the bed to a twin but I was not happy to be told the next morning by the landlady that I had clicked on a double room because she checked! - poor way of dealing with the issue as this alone made it a negative stay. An alarm box in the reception area started bleeping from 3AM and it was still bleeping when we left at 10am

Review 14:good location

Review 15:Our room served all our purposes for the price on a Tuesday evening

Review 16:We visited at an off peak time but still loved the venue - staff were friendly and made us feel welcome . Would recommend as a place to stay when visiting chippingcamden

Review 17:Nothing

Review 18:We stayed in the four poster bedroom it was spacious and very romantic the huge bathroom added to the romance the room was spotless The breakfast was very good

Review 19:Limited choice at breakfast. Had to send out for milk/yogurts.tables left with dirty crocks on. No side plates for toast.waited 10mins 1 evening at bar for staff to arrive.Later had to go looking for staff to assist young lady trying to check in.staff all dressed as if on day off. Bar adjacent to breakfast like staff room/crèche .

Review 20:Good bedroom. Premises nicely located in village. Evening menu was good as was the food.

Review 21:We stayed the night before we flew to Cape Verde to break journey. The room was tiny. The shower didn't work so my girlfriend had to wash her hair in cold water for the flight which was a disaster.

Review 22:Location and staff

Review 23:Fantastic place to stay, room excellent, very comfortable and stylish. Bathroom facilities amazing! Best nights sleep ever! Staff welcoming and breakfast first class. Looking forward to returning soon.

Review 24:This is a Grade II listed building and it has LOTS of charm. However room was a little cramped (we are both quite tall) and the shower temperature was a bit erratic - but this would not stop us from returning - it is a really lovely, good value place to stay

Review 25:Staff were really friendly. Perfect location and spotlessly clean. It had a really welcoming feel about it and we had a very relaxing stay.

Review 26:being asked to pay well over the going rate for the room, which we stayed in to save both the pub and us the bother of moving to a different room.

Review 27:charming old building

Review 28:The lady on reception was extremely unfriendly - while the younger lady showing us to our room was very pleasant. On arrival, a smile and welcome is not too much to ask for.

Review 29:The room and location

Review 30:That we only had time to stay one night :)

Review 31:Our one night stay was brilliant..staff very friendly and helpful.. Lovely old Pub and guest house..comfortable bed and good shower :)...and great English breakfast.

Review 32:Fabulous room - more a suite really, with Four Poster bed. Staff were really Special. Tremendous food. Great Guinness and wine! A fantastic stay in every way.

Review 33:Had a front room, Friday and Saturday nights no sleep between 2pm to 4pm, young ones same all over the world, unfortunately need to consider double glazing. Would seek a rear room next time, otherwise you've done the rooms nicely.

Review 34:Great Pub Great Location

Review 35:16th centuary pub in lovely village which proved to be a great base from which to explore the surrounding area including walking and horse riding on the Cotswold Way, the villages such as Broadway and the interesting Broadway tower, and the nearby steam railway, the lively town of Stratford on the river Avon (boat trips possible) etc

Review 36:Although room was very clean it smelt musty when walking in, but don't want to get distracted from the positives

Review 37:Welcoming staff good food and catered easily with food intolerances.

Review 38:The staff were friendly. The rooms were cozy. The small room upstairs is the coolest room I've seen in an inn, ever. Beds were comfortable. In the middle of High street and close to everything. The Stable Bar downstairs is perfect, check it out on Thursday nights with folk music. There is nothing like it.

Review 39:A lovely little inn with traditional stone floors and cobbles. Staff are very friendly and really welcomed our small dog. The room was spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed and its situated right on the high street. Lovely place to stay!

Review 40:These are not complaints as we found nothing to complain about , but maybe an iron and iroing board either in room or on request may be helpful, and evening menu in room together with some info on surrounding areas in such a beautiful part of the country.

Review 41:Warm and friendly welcome by Shayla, who showed us to our room which was absolutely lovely and gave us information about breakfast timings and such. She is such a lovely hardworking member of staff. The Red Lion is a really lovely building with character and lovely courtyard to sit out in good weather. Its location is perfect for visiting places such as Hidcote Gardens and Stratford Upon Avon.

Review 42:Car park was not a large as we had thought, so could not park in car park with our new car. As we did pick this pub because reviews said there was no problem parking in car park.

Review 43:Set in a lovely village. Lovely old pub. Nice staff.

Review 44:The location was perfect & everything about the Red Lion was great. The car parking facilities, the four poster bed, large bathroom & a delicious breakfast.

Review 45:If I had to find fault, our room only had a shower, no bath.

Review 46:It's a charming place, very friendly staff and locals. Located in the centre of this wonderful village. The wifi is free and works (unlike many others advertise) and the parking is on site and also free.

Review 47:Nothing it was all good

Review 48:Best nights sleep in a long while. Lovely room, four poster bed and huge bathroom, great breakfast and in a perfect location for getting to interesting places to visit in the cotswalds

Review 49:The Red Lion Inn was centrally located in Chipping Camden within easy access to other Cotswold villages. Free parking and wi-fi were available. We had a loft room, which initially appeared small but was more than an ample size for my husband and myself to spend one night in.

Review 50:Nothing really. It met my expectations.

Review 51:Great location and very nice inn. Great value for the money and excellent place to stay (as long as you realize you are at an inn and not a grand hotel).

Review 52:The only thing would be the double lock on the outside door which meant you needed two hands to open it.

Review 53:Great location, very friendly staff, child friendly and a very comfortable room.

Review 54:The place, especially the bar and restaurant, needs a good scrubbing! The staff lacked enthusiasm - no customer service. We stopped in one evening and tried to order a cheese board but was told they were closing the kitchen early.

Review 55:The location was good.

Review 56:We stayed in one of the small double rooms under the eaves--we're short and like cozy places. Surprisingly, it was bigger than expected, so I think even a taller person would be happy here. Beautifully-decorated and spotless. Delicious full breakfast in a classic English pub.

Review 57:We were given margarine/spread and not butter with our breakfast toast. As we don't like spreads this was disappointing and spoiled an otherwise good breakfast. We did give this feedback to the Red Lion.

Review 58:Good location, comfortable and spacious room with big bathroom and good facilities. Nice pub food.

Review 59:Almost everything. Short tempered, unkempt bar staff. Could be that they are racist - made sure I wasn't served a drink or dinner there. Very rude & made me very uncomfortable about staying there. Room was odd, small, very dusty and balanced atop precarious stairs. There are fantastic hotels on the same road that give amazing facilities and services. The Red Lion is a disappointment to Chipping Campden.

Review 60:Breakfast was ok

Review 61:Although very clean, the ensuite was rather cramped, with a tiny wash basin, and the shower lacked power!

Review 62:Room had lots of character, with original beams and windows. Separate entrance from the main pub, which meant the room was quiet.

Review 63:We didn't get any hot water for shower or large claw-foot tub! This was a problem and it downgraded the score on otherwise nice facilities. Also, the pub had a back area which was frequented by rather rude local kids which made us feel uncomfortable.Staff was okay but not particularly friendly.

Review 64:Good location and size of rooms; clean and comfy poster bed.

Review 65:Location of pub - very central Friendly staff but perhaps hard-pressed in the evening. Good-sized room, en suite, v clean - no bath but shower did the job efficiently.

Review 66:Good location on main street, free car park behind pub.Very pretty village. Liked the fact there was a separate entrance so didn't need to walk through pub. Very quiet, had a good nights sleep. We had a nice meal in pub in evening, friendly staff.

Review 67:Everything was great except watch the low doorways! I am 6ft and almost saw stars when I found the bar room door with the top of my head!

Review 68:Four poster bed in the ground floor room with 400 yo oak beams was a treat, bathroom was huge and clean and tidy.

Review 69:They were surprised that the internet did not work in our room. They recently put in internet for all rooms, but there seemed to be an electronic hole where our room was. I am sure they will fix that.

Review 70:The location was great, as was the town.

Review 71:Very friendly staff, well appointed and very comfortable room (recently refurbished) with four poster bed. Massive bathroom with new shower cubicle and roll top bath. Food was excellent, really well cooked and top quality ingredients. Good real ale as well.

Review 72:No desk or anywhere esle in room to work. Very poor wifi signal in room. Squeeky floorboards ... but they could be classed as part of the charm of an old building

Review 73:Very friendly staff. Direct access to room from street. Located on the high street. Great "home cooked food" restaurant. Good toiletries in bathroom

Review 74:We stayed at the Red Lion last summer and enjoyed it so much that we decided to return. Our room was excellent with all the facilities you would expect in a 4* hotel, and WiFi has improved since our last visit. We had a delicious meal there which was very good value. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I'm sure we will return to the Red Lion again.

Review 75:Great location on Chipping Campden Lower High Street. Room had character but had been refurbished to a very good standard. Breakfast well cooked, with ability to pre-order your a breakfast to your requirements the previous day.

Review 76:Very friendly staff made us feel welcome from the start. The room was small but clean and comfortable and breakfast was good. The location couldn't have been better.

Review 77:Friendly staff. Good tasty breakfast 2bacon sausage egg beans mushrooms tomatoes toast tea or coffee also cereals yoghurt and jams. Chipping Camden is beautiful for wAlking around and lots of lovely restaurants. Nice beer garden. Parking available. Double room with large shower and a large bath tub excellent sized bathroom and bedroom like an apartment.

Review 78:Breakfast was a little basic and small proportions (1 slice of toast with full English)

Review 79:Excellent location in centre of village. Staff were friendly and polite.

Review 80:Unfortunately the pub was a little quiet which tended to give it no atmosphere but that was probably down to time of year and the weather wasn't the best. All said I would definitely book again!!!

Review 81:Newly refurbished accommodation, Decent size rooms, very friendly staff, Good cooked breakfast to start you off and free WiFi

Review 82:The room in the eaves was awkward for two pensioners. Perhaps consider changing the orientation of the bed. Bathroom tricky for similar reasons.

Review 83:Location was perfect. Breakfast tasty.

Review 84:Nothing!

Review 85:The refurbished room was absolutely stunning! The bathroom was amazing! The staff extremely friendly and helpful. We'll definitely stay here again.

Review 86:We had the small attic room which was a lovely beamed room unfortunately the bed was really uncomfortable and the shower alternated between scolding or freezing

Review 87:Great breakfast and evening meal. Friendly staff. Good value for money

Review 88:The evening meal was mediocre. My pie was hard and the pastry over cooked. My friends liver and bacon was also hard and not the best. A shame as the breakfast was very good. Credit where it is deserved.

Review 89:The staff were very friendly. The parrot which was upstairs was a great talker and much fun.

Review 90:the room and shower were a bit small for the price we paided and time of year

Review 91:hotel/ location food all very good staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 92:Spent an excellent two nights in the four poster room. Very comfortable bed. Very large bathroom with roll top bath and walk in shower. Room very clean with excellent facilities including free WiFi and high quality toiletries. Tracy and her staff were very friendly and always ready to offer help and advice about the area and throw an extra log or two on the fire to keep things cosy. Evening meal and breakfast were of a very high standard and I would not hesitate to eat in the restaurant again. Overall a charming old world pub with a great welcome, comfortable rooms and good food. Thanks to Tracy and here staff for a very relaxing break.

Review 93:It is an old building, so the noise from an upstairs bedroom is noticeable. Internet/phone reception is poor.

Review 94:The pub & location is ideal for a stay in the Cotswolds. The staff are friendly, food good and pub cosy.

Review 95:The town is gorgeous, the pub has been tastefully refurbished keeping it's traditional 'Olde World' feel. The family and staff were very nice and a pleasure to meet. Great food and a very comfortable room/bed.

Review 96:There did not appear to be a significant lounge area which we would have liked to have used particularly after xmas day lunch. There were no lounge chairs in the room, although I could see there would be little room for such. There was a back bar only open of an evening. This could have had a lounge area but appeared to be frequented by young revellers.

Review 97:Tracy and her staff were excellent. The food was very good. The bedroom had the most comfortable king size bed I have ever slept in. The bed linen to a nice standard and white fluffy towels changed daily if desired. The room was warm and welcoming with Queen Anne white furniture. The TV had good reception. There were tea and coffee making facilities. The location was good, on the high street. The pub is 400 hundred years old the beams and flag stone floors reflect this. The town mainly consists of one high street with wonderful examples of Cotswold stone and houses/halls of character. A wonderful part of the Gloucester countryside.

Review 98:Booked a cosy pub with open fires - the chief draw being cosy! Open fires were not alight -we had to ask 2 mornings to light the gas fire in a cold restaurant at breakfast. A candle might have been nice at the dinner dining table.

Review 99:We stayed here overnight whilst visiting Chipping Campden and Broadway for the weekend. We had a delightful, beamed small attic room with excellent modern ensuite (shower, no bath) that was beautifully clean. Fantastic cooked breakfast the next morning.the access to the room was through a separate outside door.

Review 100:I booked for 2 nights. On arrival I was shown to what turned out to be the wrong room. I was able to remain in this room for the first night but then had to move to the room originally allocated to me for the second night and this was less satisfactory. I would not want to stay there again.

Review 101:Nice old building with character and conveniently situated for where I wanted to go.

Review 102:Nothing.

Review 103:Great value, very clean & comfortable, good food, Attentive staff and very convenient for many villages and towns in the Cotswolds. Easy parking at no charge.

Review 104:Imagine our horror when we arrived to find it was 'Ibiza night'! No surprise then when just after midnight a fight broke out in the street below our window. When mentioned on checkout was told that's what it's like in villages, and that 'last night the police were called three times'. Rather spoils my view of the 'peaceful' Cotswolds, and frankly holding an Ibiza night was only asking for trouble!!!

Review 105:Friendly staff

Review 106:No warning at any time regarding two steep flights of stairs. As someone with walking difficulties could have been a major problem.

Review 107:Excellent location and such friendly and helpful staff.

Review 108:We left a charging cable in our room and called the Red Lion the next day. We were told they would look into it and email us. Never did. A bit disappointing. I got the sense they were a bit understaffed or just didn't care.

Review 109:The facility was located very well and had a nice indoor and outdoor pub / restaurant with good food. Very traditional old time lodging which was well maintained. Good parking.

Review 110:We are both tall and the rooms at the top have sloping sides, which made it difficult getting in and out of bed at night.

Review 111:Close to the restaurant we wanted to go to. Very clean room. Plenty of parking when we arrived.

Review 112:Having to leave!

Review 113:Polite, helpful welcome, lovely room immaculately maintained. Food excellent both at breakfast & in the evening. Staff hard-working & friendly - to be commended. SO good to find somewhere where dogs really are welcomed not merely tolerated. Oscar (African Grey) is a character!

Review 114:No wifi connection in the room, but this is due to the thick walls of this historic inn, so the trade-off is acceptable.

Review 115:Our room in the 200-year-old "cottage" was lovely. We enjoyed the exposed beams, the comfortable bed, and the modern and convenient bathroom. The breakfasts were excellent, and we ate dinner there every night of our 3-day stay.We hired the Red Lion Car to take us to Stow-on-the-Wold and pick us up later on; Reg's commentary about the area and the neighboring villages were very interesting. We decided that Chipping Campdem was the nicest. We will definitely stay here again if we return to the area.

Review 116:We booked 2 rooms and one was really small (even though we aren't that big!). The breakfast selection was limited (not much fruit) and the cooked breakfast was fried rather than grilled.

Review 117:Great location. Rooms were nicely furnished.

Review 118:Staff was not the friendliest.

Review 119:Great central location. Great town. Plenty of food for breakfast-- You were able to choose what you wanted to eat the night before.

Review 120:Bar closed too early. Could not get a drink after 11PM.

Review 121:Nice inn, but it was quite noisy at night due to being on the High st, noisy toilets, noisy neighbours.

Review 122:The room was clean and cosy. The rooms are in a separate building from the actual pub, around the corner. The standard is modest but OK and with the perfect location and private parking and a great breakfast it's good value. And I can recommend the pub food. It was a great - the steak and ale pie was delish!

Review 123:This is a well located bed & breakfast located in the center of Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. The inn is more than 300 years ago that has updated rooms. The breakfast was a typical English breakfast.

Review 124:No where to park on arrival, even though it stated parking available no need to reserve. Room very small, right next to a T Junction on busy road, loud traffic noise all night. No where to hang towels in on suite. Not being able to get an evening meal, as apparently fully booked.

Review 125:Breakfast was fantastic, all excellent quality and cooked perfectly. The room was immaculately clean.

Review 126:A little noisy because it sits on a busy corner. No air conditioning.

Review 127:We were a family of 6 and had 3 rooms on 3 different levels. All rooms were very comfortable and charming but the one on the first floor is the largest by far and had a huge bathroom. This was also easiest access with luggage as no elevator so the others had to drag theirs up one or two levels of steps. Loved the bar/dining area inside and the patio outside was a great place to eat or have a drink.
