Reviews for Cartref Guest House

Review 1:Host was so lovely and made us feel very welcome. The attention to detail in the rooms and breakfast was wonderful and we enjoyed our time here. Would return to Carlisle just to stay here again

Review 2:only small downside is parking is a bit of a problem but with it being so close to the town centre it is to be expected I guess.

Review 3:lovely and friendly B&B, in walking distance from the town centre. fabulous breakfast.

Review 4:Everything was very good.one of the best we have ever stayed in.The owners are very keen to please nothing was any trouble.Would certainly stay again.

Review 5:I stayed during December and what could have been a very pleasant stay was ruined due to there being no heating in the bedrooms . I slept in my jumper and trousers to keep warm

Review 6:Nicely decorated rooms and clean wash rooms etc

Review 7:Superbly clean & fresh. Proper tea making facilities not a single carton of uht milk in sight! Fresh ground coffee in room, excellentwith a kettle like I have at home! Really gave the home from home feel. Lovely beds nice and warm and cosy. Excelllent space to walk about. Smart TV in room robes in bathroom with little nic naks. Cotton balls, buds, sewing kit, manicure set.. Breakfast was amazing my daughter loved the American breakfast with waffles and syrup!! loved it! Very well done!

Review 8:The guest house is very beautifully decorated, the room was wonderful and the owners and staff make you feel like home. I have never seen more well equipped room and we weren't charged for anything we used from the bar. Just a few minutes from the centre, we were walking easily anytime of the day/night.

Review 9:Nothing

Review 10:The warm welcome from the owner, the beautifully decorated and provisioned room. So much thought and care had been spent to make the guest feel at home. Undoubtedly the best and most welcoming B&B I have ever stayed in. Thank you.

Review 11:Very happy with the whole experience

Review 12:We had a 1 night stay the room was perfect we had no complaints very good value for money and the proprietor was very approachable friendly would highly recommend and would stay again if in the area

Review 13:The road traffic noise, however there is nothing the guest house can do about this.

Review 14:Nice clean guest house, superbly located near both the motorways and the city centre, both Melanie and her sister were helpful in directing us around the city, Melanie went out of her way to meet each of our requests which was greatly appreciated. The home was decorated to a high standard and impeccably clean. The added treats in the room were the final finishes touches which really made the stay feel homely! Thanks Melanie

Review 15:Unfortunately the TV in the room albeit a very nice large wall mounted one had a problem with the remote basically it didn't work. I reported this and it was looked at but I was told there was nothing that could be done as it was a new internet TV and any chance of rectifying this would have to wait until the installers could be contacted. I thought at this stage an alternative room should have been offered as spending the evening in the room and having to constantly get up and walk to the TV and mess blindly behind it to find another channel or adjust the volume became a real pain and eventually resulted in me having a early night.

Review 16:The location was quite critical, also the price advertised was very attractive. The hotel had a tidy and appealing kerb side appearance. The room was roomy and very well appointed and looked beautiful. The bed was very comfortable and had adequate warm bedding. There was more than enough choice of beverages available and the en suite was very nice with a excellent roomy shower. Breakfast was very varied and tasty with top quality ingredients.

Review 17:This is not the fault of the owner, who is not allowed to fit double glazing, but our room was on the front and the noise from the busy road kept us awake. A room at the back would not have this problem. Towel rail in en-suite dangerously hot

Review 18:Beautifully kept with much attention to detail e.g.proper coffee, fresh fruit, water and a piece of delicious cake. Owner very helpful

Review 19:Chose Room on front unfortunately traffic noise never subsided

Review 20:Very comfortable room. Made to fell very welcome room not ready when we arrived made my wife and I a cup of coffee whist the room was finished. Great Breakfast

Review 21:Not Applicable

Review 22:We had an excellent overnight stay. We were made very welcome - our room was very spacious and comfortable. Lots of complimentary items - fruit, juice, special biscuits, top quality toiletries. Superb breakfast. Couldn't fault it!!

Review 23:Boisterous, noisy young male guests (they just happened to be there at the same time). Got to hear an entire private conversation on loud mobile speaker phone - very amusing, but also annoying!

Review 24:Lovely, friendly welcome. Lots of lovely thoughtful and considerate extras in the room.

Review 25:Woken up at 4am by other guests coming in....but not the b and b's fault.

Review 26:Very friendly, lovely room, close to station and city centre, great b and b!

Review 27:Only complaint I have is the about the shower, which was not very powerful and getting the right temperature was difficult.

Review 28:The whole house was a delight to stay in. The staff were lovely as was the food. Probably the best hotel I have stayed in, would definitely stay again for both leisure or business.

Review 29:Awesome place, the atmosphere that a real guest house should have, treating you like a visitor not a profit. Great breakfast menu and the food was really good.

Review 30:My only real criticism is that it is located on a fairly busy road, and parking was a bit of a challenge - you need to get a permit from the guest house to allow you to park in the time-limited parking. (However, many of the guest houses in Carlisle seemed to be similarly located.)

Review 31:Our room was clean and very comfortable, and full of little extras (like home cooked treats and high quality hot chocolate). The guest house is about a 10 min walk into the centre of town.

Review 32:Parking is the only draw back but so near the city centre this is to be expected.

Review 33:The whole experience was a cut above a normal B&B. Lots of little touches make this place stand out.i will be back on business and pleasure

Review 34:Location close to busy road junction, with associated traffic noise etc. Also , no room heat of any description, central heating not on in October.! Had terrible sleep on second night, room like a fridge, never known any other Hotel etc,not to have heating on in Autumn etc.

Review 35:Welcome by Host very good. Room was quite well appointed, with lots of thoughtful"add ons"/provisions in room.

Review 36:We arrived quite late on a Saturday evening, but the owners still welcomed us warmly and gave us information about where we could still get food at that time. The room was very comfortable, and breakfast smelled amazing - we were just sorry we couldn't stay longer!

Review 37:Bathroom in need of refurb but the owners are on with this in the coming months.

Review 38:Great location, lovely helpful owner, value for money. Totally enjoyable stay.

Review 39:The energy efficient bath room door (door had to always be shut to allow light/fan to automatically shut off after a given amount of time) was a little annoying. Would have preferred to be able to leave the door open when running in to brush teeth but admire the owners for being environmentally conscious.

Review 40:Clean, comfortable room after a very long day hiking Hadrian's Wall. Breakfast was very good.

Review 41:Lugging our bags up the stairs. The shower was not very user friendly. The wifi didn't work in the top room.

Review 42:The location was great. The hostess was very friendly. There was lovely free treats in the room.

Review 43:We arrived late and there was no hot food in the neighbourhood after 9 pm. Car park on roadside free overnight but not day time.

Review 44:The place was comfortable. The breakfast was very good.

Review 45:Very friendly staff, great facilities, delicious breakfast. Felt more like a hotel than a B&B - very good value for money, and close to bus/rail links.

Review 46:Room 8 gets really warm at night- would suggest getting air con unit or fan in. Only option was to open sky light to very noisy road outside and early morning bright light.

Review 47:Friendly welcome, gorgeous room, small details like toffees and sweets in room and Hall.

Review 48:Very clean and modern. A lot of thought into décor. Very friendly. Go the extra mile by leaving treats and sweets in room. Plenty of sample moisturisers etc they even leave out cotton buds etc.

Review 49:The location of the guest house is right next to a busy road, kinda hard to sleep with the traffic. You have to keep the window open because the warms are warm.

Review 50:The rooms were clean and proved many amenities.

Review 51:We were very happy with facilities. The single of the bedroom had a shared bathroom but as we were were away very early the next morning this was not a problem.

Review 52:A warm welcome and nice bedrooms which were clean and comfortable. Family room nice and roomy where we gathered at night for a wee get together. We were away very nearly the next morning so we did not have breakfast.

Review 53:Stopped by this lovely guest house whilst working in carlisie . Staff were friendly , room was luxury and over all very clean . Would visit again in a heart beat :-)

Review 54:On main road so traffic noisy. No shower gel provided. Towel rails, esp in shower room would be useful. TV remote worn so controls difficult to read & not very responsive.

Review 55:Range of breakfast menu. Coffee bags in room (although only decaff). Early check-in. Being able to leave luggage after check-out. Owner very helpful & accommodating. Proximity to city centre & visitor attractions.

Review 56:Sadly for us, the thing that spoilt our stay in Carlisle which you need to be aware off was that although the guest house gave us 2 parking permits to park in the side road, when we left one of the cars had been given a parking ticket which we don't understand. This really put a damper on a lovely few days for us.

Review 57:The rooms were very spacious and well equipped with a homely feel. Both our rooms had en suite. The proprietors were very friendly and we were made very welcome. We paid for breakfast and this was a large meal which kept us going all day, so well worth the money. There was a good pub meal at the beehive not far from the b&b plus loads of other places to eat nearby. The town centre shops, cathedral and castle were within walking distance.

Review 58:Only stayed one night.

Review 59:The owners were WONDERFUL. The decor and attention to detail was extraordinary. In two weeks, we stayed in 7 different B&Bs and this one was by far the best. They apparently really get what it takes to make a stay wonderful and welcoming. Stay here and see for yourself.

Review 60:Anything you might want was there and so much variety to choose from. The food was excellant. You were well looked after. I will definitely go there again.

Review 61:Service and facilities were first class ... Breakfast was amazing ... And so convenient to walk into town centre .. Just 5 mins .. Only minus was being in A room at the front and close to the road was a little noisy at times

Review 62:Loud voices around 10pm and again at 6am. Rooms could do with a deep clean. (vents very dirty and glass was not fresh.

Review 63:Very friendly lady greeted us on arrival. Rooms looked very nice

Review 64:I really couldn't fault the hotel, if I had one very slight grumble it would be of the road noise outside, although I slept through this, so it can't have been all that bad.

Review 65:From the moment I entered the hotel, the staff were extremely friendly, and kind, showed me my room, nothing seemed to much bother, I was surprised at the high standard of room, very modern and extremely comfortable, I'd definitely stay again and would highly recommend to others thankyou

Review 66:Nothing !

Review 67:Amazing guest house. Lovely owners and highly recommend to anyone really homely and looks stunning beautiful bathrooms and bedrooms. Will be coming back definitely

Review 68:Friendly hosts, nice decor, great breakfast . It is close to all amenities. Mis-leading map on google ,it is adjacent to Carlisle college. Would highly recommend the Cartref.

Review 69:Shower unit a bit small and cramped bathroom.

Review 70:Good value for the location, clean and generally well presented. Friendly owner and staff. Good value breakfast

Review 71:On a very busy road so can be noisy. Rooms at the back may be quieter!!

Review 72:Very welcoming host, large luxurious room with lots of complimentary goodies and toiletries. Plenty of storage space and very comfy bed. Breakfast was fantastic with cereals, sliced fresh fruit, yoghurt and juices etc, and hot full breakfast cooked to order! Free parking just around the corner with token form hotel. Location close to city centre!

Review 73:It's only a minor thing but worth mentioning for the owners awareness more than anything. The 'welcome' pack listed a number of items which would be available in the en-suite bathroom however a number of these items were not present.

Review 74:The room was very comfortable and the muffin was a nice touch.

Review 75:Stayed in many places in Carlisle the last three years but this tops them all . Friendly , down to earth , efficient and professional people . The room was great , spotless and homely decor . It is hard to mention all the little touches to welcome you , from little bows on wrapped cakes to fresh fruit and mineral water . You want for nothing , including tea , coffee and toiletries galore . The bathroom was immaculate and the shower did what it was supposed to ! Amazing ! Breakfast was lovely and plentiful and outside of serving time due to Melanie's kindness . Something for everyone including our veggie daughter , who was stuffed . This is how it is supposed to be done ! Well done and thank you Melanie , Graham and extended family . PS . Hope little girl is better and Leah says you spelt cinnamon wrong on your menu !

Review 76:would have been nice to sit in a lounge for hour or so during day or prior to going for evening meal

Review 77:good location, ideal for short break, clean and comfortable

Review 78:Wi-fi didn't have a strong signal but was useable for non-streaming. Shower wasn't particular good because it's a saniflow system.

Review 79:They don't charge extra for dogs and there is a park five min walk from B&B

Review 80:The only down side was the room on the main road side - bit noisy - but thats all really, cant do much about that

Review 81:The friendliness of the 2 ladies that were running it, the rooms were fabulous with extra touches - toiletries, robes, drinks. And the beds were super comfy

Review 82:Lovely room and very comfortable liked the touches crispy cake with tea room 5 lamp plug needs checked at left-hand side wire loose but an easy fix no complaints

Review 83:I couldn't connect the the wifi but wasn't sure if it was just my phone but a great service to provide!

Review 84:My room was so homely and as I travelled alone it was a great comfort! The welcome was lovely and very helpful

Review 85:Could find nothing to Dislike!!!

Review 86:Handy for city centre, short walk to/from bus station. Well appointed and comfortable. Staff very cheery and polite.

Review 87:I booked the Cartref for my Aunt who was travelling alone and she loved it! She said it was clean & comfortable, the breakfast was lovely & the staff friendly & attentive; she liked the attention to detail & was impressed with the fruit & biscuits supplied in her room. The Cartref will be her base when she visits again next year!

Review 88:Room dirty, tea pot still had tea from previous guests, cold room, uncomfortable bed, shower not cleaned at all, had lots of hairs, dust everywhere, dirty decorative pillows, only one towel set for 2 guests and one bathrobe... breakfast very late... what is the point of asking at what time you need it ready if you still need to wait for it one hour to get prepared...therefore skipped it as I was late for a hospital appointment.... which I didn't feel the need to explain to my host about in order to get breakfast in time.... paid too much for the value and i wish i hadn't paid on arrival... i wouldn't have paid for the breakfast that i never had eventually. Less decorations and more cleaning would be welcome...oh, and more heating... as I am actually paying for comfort.... or am i not?!

Review 89:the decorations

Review 90:No bad experience - be sure to ask for a room at the back if traffic bothers you but it certainly didn't bother me.

Review 91:The owner, Melanie, was lovely and somehow found time to have a quick chat in her mega-busy schedule. Beautifully laid out breakfast room and great food to match it (one of the best bacon butties I've ever had!). Brilliant location, altho you do need to be careful crossing the main road - traffic is a little crazy.

Review 92:The owners were very friendly and attentive. My room was spotless and a great deal of thought has been given to every detail, with luxury toiletries and superior tea/coffee making facilities. Excellent breakfast. Only a few minutes walk from the cent of Carlisle. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 93:We booked one night stay and were given the attic room at the very top, twin beds with very little room around them, should've just been a single room, evidence of this was just one robe hanging in the wardrobe? Nowhere to put your case and just a velux window therefore no view. No heating except for the heated rail in the shower room which was located at the side of the shower cubicle but was impossible to reach and switch on. Shower itself was either freezing cold or roasting hot. Got very little sleep due to the noise from the main road, kept awake with lorries thundering past and police/ambulance sirens, even with ear plugs in I could still hear it. Breakfast was disappointing too, had to ask diners at another table for butter as it wasn't on our table. sausages not to out liking but that was perhaps just our taste. We weren't offered a refill of tea or toast. The price (which had to be cash) of £75 we felt was a bit much considering the size and noise etc we had to put up with. I have stayed in Carlisle many times at centrally located hotels for a few pounds more, one even had a swimming pool. We decided on a B&B this time as it was only one night, thank goodness it was because I couldn't put up with another night.

Review 94:location was ok and room clean.

Review 95:A bit too much "stuff" in such a small room leaving very little surface room to place any of my things.

Review 96:Friendliness of owners - daffodills at front door.

Review 97:Although it wasn't a problem - couldn't pay by card... cash or cheque only!

Review 98:Really friendly and welcoming. Room was perfect, very clean, comfortable and well supplied with complimentary freebies!! Would highly recommend to anyone staying in Carlisle for a couple of nights!

Review 99:Nothing was too much trouble for the staff--a friendly welcome and outstanding breakfasts! Thoroughly classy without being the least bit pretentious.

Review 100:No tea bags.... except for the used one left in the teapot!

Review 101:Really lovely decor, nice touches with fresh fruit & bottled water. Very friendly, helpful owner

Review 102:Friendly welcome, beautifully decorated room, first class breakfast. Within walking distance of town centre and we found free car parking easy near property.

Review 103:The room was v cold and was a smell of possibly damp. I made a mistake in my booking by not realising the toilet and shower were outside the room along the hall, lesson learnt for next time!

Review 104:The location of the property was ideal and the house and room was well presented. Staff also friendly.

Review 105:This is one of the most stylish B&Bs I've ever stayed in. Exceptional attention to detail, from a lovely welcome card (in an envelope with my name on it), to a huge array of toiletries in a smart bathroom cabinet. The family are really, really friendly - could not have done more to make us feel welcome.

Review 106:Stayed with two friends on Saturday. We loved how welcoming Melanie was. The room was beautiful and had loads of lovely touches - including free complimentary items you would never get in a hotel. Really central too. We'll be back.

Review 107:Friendly owner. Nice cosy room. Free parking at side road in evening.

Review 108:Attention to detail, care and consideration of the staff. Friendly and welcoming, clean, comfortable facilities

Review 109:Friendly staff, very good value for money, good breakfast

Review 110:The room was cool, as the living room where the breakfast was served

Review 111:Very clean, really close to the city centre. Quiet area

Review 112:Room was very loud (street traffic)

Review 113:It's a bit noisy at night. Lots of traffic.

Review 114:Hospitality of the host

Review 115:Lovely friendly hotel. Breakfast was excellent great value for money. Free parking to boot.

Review 116:na

Review 117:great suggestion for finding dinner; really cosy room and lovely breakfast

Review 119:Nothing.

Review 120:A nice homely atmosphere and the owners very friendly

Review 121:We had a road facing family room which endured traffic noise at all hours!

Review 122:Handy city centre location

Review 123:Nothing not to like!

Review 124:Facilities were clean and very pretty. Hosts were friendly and welcoming. Delicious breakfast.
