Reviews for The Kings Hotel
Review 1:Our room didn't have a shower, only a bath. This wound up not being a big deal at all - it was actually kind of fun to take a bath. But it would've been nice to know ahead of time.
Review 2:Location is ideal and we loved the outstanding restaurant on site. The staff was warm and friendly and eager to make us feel at home and comfortable.
Review 3:Not a real gripe, but - for a lover of firm mattresses - bed was rather hard. On the other hand, pillows were plentiful and comfortable.
Review 4:General friendly and open approach to guests from all staff, from check-in through to departure. Private parking; good, central location. Breakfast very good - all food well prepared, presented and efficiently served.
Review 5:Having to pay extra for breakfast is odd
Review 6:Location, Chipping Campden is delightful as is the surrounding area. Familiarity (have stayed many times previously on business),
Review 7:King room had two single beds put together (albeit made up as one). Description stated orla kiely toiletries which were not provided although the ones which were provided were of very nice quality
Review 8:Good location for places to eat and drink and quaint shops. nice, clean environment and friendly staff. Stylish good sized room.
Review 9:Nothing
Review 10:Everything! Beautiful hotel in lovely Chipping Campden. Room was very large and we didn't want to leave! Couldn't fault it. Private car park round the back of the hotel was very convenient.
Review 11:Looking forward to a well deserved lie in (we opted for room only for this purpose) we were disappointed to be woken up shortly after 7am with noise that sounded like an electric saw from the back of the property. Also shortly after this there was the loud noise of bottles being manoeuvred (for recycling?) that continued sparodically for quite a while. Needless to say we were unable to return to sleep! Avoid room 102 for this reason.
Review 12:Friendly staff, hotel was very clean.
Review 13:Only one thing! Bed was uncomfortable!
Review 14:Location, friendliness of staff, the building and decor. Food was good! Shame it doesn't have more facilities (e.g spa etc)
Review 15:Twice in the restaurant we had to wait a bit too long (once at dinner and once at dinner), but overall it was no big deal.
Review 16:The room was very spatious and bright. Excellent food in the restaurant!
Review 17:Breakfast is slow in the restaurant, though food very good, the next day room service was good.
Review 18:The room in the cottage at the back of the hotel was fabulous - quieter than in the hotel, large and very well appointed especially the bathroom (shower) and bath. Good drinks tray in room.
Review 19:Lovely ambience.......great choice at breakfast....country garden to sit out with a drink...ideal for a walk round town....car parking available without charge!
Review 20:Room (109) was very noisy from 7.00 am onwards up to when the boiler switches off (don't know what time - suspect it is evening).I would have thought any room at this end of the hotel would be affected.
Review 21:Nice room (109).Overall it looked a very nice Hotel. I wasn't eating there - I was meeting friends elsewhere
Review 22:Nothing negative except the rain!
Review 23:Wonderful spacious room - retained charm of old inn with modern bathroom. Wonderful location in charming Cotswold town
Review 24:There were low beams in our bedroom which considering both my husband and I are tall, did not go down well. Paint work peeling off from bathroom, bathroom was very small. Radiator in the snug room and bedroom was not working.
Review 25:Minor complaint from Mrs Milwain, the lady occupying room 201 which she found to be a little cold.
Review 26:very pleasant atmosphere, cheerful staff rooms generally pleasant and well appointed The evening meal was good and the brasserie a pleasant place to eat.
Review 27:We were in the Cottage. The room above us had very loudly creaking floorboards and the guests in there were walking about continuously from 11.30pm until the early hours of the morning and then started again at 7.00am. It was the worst night we have ever spent in a hotel with a reputation for its supposed quality. The second night was not quite so bad but still we had disturbed sleep. The bedroom was very small. We were not informed when booking that we would be unable to have dinner in the dining room (wedding party) so we ate in the brasserie which was cold with loud music from speakers. We asked if the music could be turned down slightly and were told that was not possible.e
Review 28:The food is excellent and the staff are pleasant. The rooms are very clean. The bath was wonderful although we would have liked a shower as well.
Review 29:Upstairs was very tiered. The room (109) we was given was poor, small andover the kitchen. Not only did it smell of food, at exactly eighto'clock the noisy kitchen and fans started ruining the weekend.Money was taken from our account more than the actual bill on arrival, even though we stated that we would pay cash on leaving. It then tookseveral days to be refunded.
Review 30:Staff was pleasant. The reception, lounge bar and restaurant werevery nice.
Review 31:Experience at breakfast ruined things. Was repeatedly ignored. Numerous people who had arrived after me got served first. When I complained I was told that I needed to go to the kitchen to place an order. This wasn't at all clear.
Review 32:Room was very nice.
Review 33:Room not clean, staff did not see our concerns over booking a named room with a colour scheme and they gave us a totally different room
Review 34:Lovely location
Review 35:The room was expensive, but the only problem was that it needed an extension cord for the electric kettle.
Review 36:We had a very nice 2 night stay at the Kings Hotel. The King room was large and comfortable. Chipping Campden is beautiful and the hotel's location is great for Cotswold Way hikers. We found on street parking about a block away from the hotel and it was easy and free. We ate dinner in both the bar and the restaurant. The bar was comfortable, but the restaurant dinner was excellent and we'd eat there both nights if we could do it again. The staff was very helpful.
Review 37:The TV in the room could do with being a bit larger!
Review 38:Great location. We were in a separate cottage and the accommodation was excellent with a feature, central bath in the huge bathroom! The meal in the restaurant was delicious and good value. There was plenty of choice for an excellent breakfast. The staff were very friendly.
Review 39:There was no shower in the bathroom (only shower head on bath taps) which was very disappointing for the cost of the room !! We tried to contact reception by internal phone to book a table for dinner - both of us tried and no one answered. When we went downstairs and enquired after a table, we were told that "if we had come half an hour earlier they would have had a table". We explained that we had been calling - approx. half an hour before but no one picked up. Her reply was unsatisfactory - no apologies just said they were very busy.. Disappointing service, but fate intervened and just 50 yrds down the road was a fab Greek restaurant (Michael Alexiou''s)!!
Review 40:Fantastic location and beautiful bedroom (king sized double). Great value breakfast (included in the room price), although felt that 9.30am finish for serving was a tad early on a weekend. Guest parking available.
Review 41:No shower in the bathroom; kettle in room did not have a sufficiently long flex to allow it to be plugged in!!
Review 42:Staff were excellent; comfort of room; breakfast was excellent.
Review 43:The wifi did not work in our room on the second floor which was an inconvenience.
Review 44:The hotel is lovely to look at with an attractive courtyard at the back. It is obviously in more or less its original form when Chipping Camden was a thriving market town. Enjoyable stay.
Review 45:Little daylight in the annex room, & not even a chair to sit on. There are more facilities in a Travelodge. Difficult to open the sky light window Full shower facilities did not work - looks nice but without the back up water pressure for all systems to work. No instructions on how to switch on the extractor fan
Review 46:Staff friendly & helpful
Review 47:The bath tub was installed in the eaves so showering couldn't be done standing up. The mixer tap was very temperamental.
Review 48:The hotel is very central to the beautiful town of Chipping Campden. There is a nice informal and relaxed atmosphere in the hotel, and the staff are polite and helpful. There is a small but appealing selection of food on the bar menu, which we enjoyed on two occasions.
Review 49:This hotel was okay, but really orientated toward coach tours. Staff seemed to try hard, but were stretched by the sheer numbers of people at dinner and breakfast
Review 50:We stayed here for the location, across the road from Charlecote Park, a National Trust property
Review 51:My cooked breakfast in the morning took a while to be ordered / made and I was almost late for my training course, although the quality of the food was good. The car park at the back isn't the largest and has a very narrow entrance.
Review 52:Room was a very good size, comfortable and had a large bathroom with a good shower. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Free Wi-Fi was also excellent. Nice little bar area downstairs as well next to reception.
Review 53:Having to wait 20 mins just to order breakfast because "the other guests were late coming down and we only have one cook today". Not my problem I'm afraid. It was 35 mins before we started to eat the cooked breakfast which was all we wanted.
Review 54:Lovely en suite room with great shower
Review 55:The prices in the bar were quite steep, but on par with other places in the village.
Review 56:The staff are all really friendly and the whole place is kept to an excellent standard. There is lots of attention to detail. It was our wedding anniversary and so that staff had given us a card and chocolates which was such a lovely gesture.
Review 57:Had to shut window even though warm (thankfully not very hot as no air con, but at least fan provided) to prevent smells from the kitchen (cooking oil) coming in to room. Food in bar area extremely salty, but when I mentioned it they didn't seem to take it very seriously. No desk or table to work at or if you wanted to eat in room.
Review 58:Comfortable room, friendly staff. Good central location in Campden, with parking, though this is limited. One of the few (if not the only) hotels in the town that have Wi-Fi in all areas even in bedrooms; the whole area has almost no cellular signal for the biggest providers. No lift, but staff available to help with luggage.
Review 59:Rooms could be a bit more fresh. A few updated decor touches in the lobby could make a good first impression rather than walking in to find 2 desks. Fresh flowers and a more updated reception stand perhaps.
Review 60:Wonderful garden, breakfast was fresh and delicious. Staff friendly and parking complementary. Made it easy for my short stay. The spa next door was nice.
Review 61:Even though the Dover's Games were going on while we were there, the staff were fantastically helpful. The accommodations were perfect. I'd love to go back there soon.
Review 62:Great bathroom/ wet room but unfortunately the main giant shower head did not work. Poor cooked breakfast.
Review 63:Stayed in the Clifford suite which was a lovely room with a nice big bath.
Review 64:We were were asked whether we would like a newspaper. We should have been told at that time that there was a charge. The bed was too low to the ground.
Review 65:The wait staff were sweet and friendly.
Review 66:Very noisy in the hallways which you can hear early in the morning, breakfast overpriced at 30 pounds per couple, very low water pressure in shower
Review 67:Friendly staff, good location, good bar
Review 68:A really great bathroom was spoiled by a handheld shower. I recognise that old buildings sometimes cause these problems but there was plenty of room for a separate shower stall instead of it being over the bath. The food in the bar was mediocre at best and I would not eat there again.
Review 69:Staff at check in were great, nice big room but starting to look a bit tired maybe. It's a lovely hotel in a beautiful place, the room had everything you could want and overall I would recommend it. The breakfast was as good as any I have had. Chipping Campden is one of the most beautiful little towns I have ever seen.
Review 70:dinner menu not on display by late afternoon, lunch one still there, not good for passing trade.
Review 71:location and service good. complimentary voucher on leaving, nice touch.
Review 72:While I appreciate the property is old, the lack of a shower in the bathroom is a serious issue. Made worse by the fact it was not mentioned on check-in, or even referenced, which I found questionable. A shower is a basic necessity - so to be charged £170 for a hotel room without one is outrageous.
Review 73:A perfect location, staff kind and helpful, room (King) was spacious and equipped with all we needed. We appreciated the attentive little extras (coffee, tea, biscuits, apples offered in room). Breakfast is unbeatable and the kitchen in general was very fine. We would gladly stay again if back in the Cotswolds.
Review 74:We stayed in the cottages for the first night and the room we were allocated had the following issues: It felt claustrophobic due to the lack of windows (there were 3 small windows high above the bed that you could not look out of) It smelt of damp which was not pleasant. The room was very cold - we complained and heating was turned up which was great but thermostat did not seem to be working so we went from freezing to roasting all night and did not sleep. The next night we asked to change rooms and were moved to the main hotel which was very nice. Only complaint was that the shower pressure was non existent. Wifi connection was hit and miss.
Review 75:Location is great. Food was also very good - breakfast, lunch and dinner were consistently good. Hotel had free parking. Staff were friendly and helpful although dining service was a little erratic. Room in the main hotel was lovely. Rooms were clean although noticed some items around the hotel could have done with a dusting.
Review 76:Very hot in the room - above the kitchens also so quite loud when cooking in the evening before we went out
Review 77:Very comfortable, lovely interiors and a fabulous bed
Review 78:Our room was very rundown and in need of updating. The beds were uncomfortable.
Review 79:The Location and breakfast was about the only good thing at this hotel.
Review 80:Noise from extractor
Review 81:We complained about the noise from the extractor next to room which woke us up at 07:30 on Sunday morning, we were offered a discount but would rather not have the noise. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful.
Review 82:Bathroom facilities – there was no shower, just a bath, which was in a small corner under a slanted roof. There was no room to stand up at all, struggled with the space even sat down, so showing was extremely difficult.
Review 83:Excellent food and location, staff was very friendly. Cosy atmosphere.
Review 84:It's an old building, so soundproofing is not great, but it has so much character, you can overlook this.
Review 85:Central location, good food, friendly staff
Review 86:Room too dark. Dinner menu was not available when we arrived even though we were checking in at 4pm. Service at breakfast was painfully slow as they were under staffed in the kitchen.
Review 87:Fantastic location. Hotel decor was very festive. Lovely breakfast with a good range of food including gluten free options
Review 88:The location was ideal. Lovely to look out over the square on the misty autumn mornings. Ideal location for touring the Cotswolds. Would recommend it.
Review 89:There was noise from the room above, the floor creaked so woken early. To be expected from an old property So next time I wouldn't stay on the ground. The restaurant and bar were quite bright so chose to eat elsewhere. The bar had a fire which would have been nice had it been lit, there was nobody in there at all.
Review 90:Stayed in the cottage at the rear of the hotel. Everything you needed was in the room and the bathroom was excellent with 2 sinks, large sink we and a bath. The hotel is bang in the middle of Chipping Camden.
Review 91:there was only one thing that concerned us and that was having the back twin room above the noise of the dustbins and extractor/boiler noise. luckily we were tired and it didn't get to us too much but might have annoyed us if we'd stayed longer.
Review 92:My daughter (adult) and I needed a short relaxing break and it was perfect. the village is beautiful and the hotel very pretty. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was delicious, both in the restaurant and at breakfast (loved the scrambled egg with smoked salmon!) and they were flexible with my daughter's breakfast request. We loved their recommended 5 mile walk from the hotel, just what we were hoping for.
Review 93:The location of the hotel was perfect, beautiful and convenient. The bathroom was especially lovely - very spa like. The breakfast was delicious and hearty!
Review 94:We got a deal of £100 per room, so we booked 2 rooms, but we obvioulsy got the smallest rooms with low ceilings and we found a couple of large cobwebs, which wasnt very pleasant.......! My friend had the room next door to us and she could hear us clearly, which isnt ideal if you dont know the person next door!
Review 95:Location was ideal for us. I also asked the hotel to arrange flowers for my friend, which they did and they were very nice. Beds comfortable and they had nice fresh bedlinen. The breakfast was only £10, which we thought was very reasonable, but we didnt have time for breakfast unfortunately, there is limited parking onsite,m but my friends and I both managed to get a car space.
Review 96:Starter was good but main course (lamb) very disappointing. Service from restaurant to reception was excellent.
Review 97:Choice of wine was good and the Malbec very drinkable.
Review 98:The only minor fault we could find was a chip in a glass at breakfast.
Review 99:Fantastically accomodating staff from Reception to restaurant staff. Excellent food and wine. Clean room. Nice view to rear of building. Good quality toileteries. All in all a very pleasant stay in a lovely english heritage village.
Review 100:It was a VERY expensive overnight stay given the limited facilities provided - no lounge in which to relax; Brasseire part of the bar with a through route from car park to reception for arriving and departing guests. Breakfast service disappointing -no large bowls for cereal; 3 pieces of toast for two people - had to ask for more.
Review 101:Location - perfect for an overnight stay with time to really enjoy Chipping Campden Good food. Staff pleasant
Review 102:The room didn't have a shower because of the shape of the ceiling - would have like to have been given an option of a shower, Would have appreciated hand soap.
Review 103:liked location and hotel. Breakfast was really nice.
Review 104:Nothing!
Review 105:Had a cottage room which was lovely-the breakfast in the morning was very nice too-freshly cooked! Chipping Campden is a very pretty place lots of good english pubs and lovely food! Food at the hotel was excellent!
Review 106:Having to leave after such a short stay!
Review 107:Excellent location, situated in a quaint area of the Cotswolds! Accommodation was full of character and charm!
Review 108:Steep stairs. Single glazing. Good shower but over the bath Single glazed windows so some traffic noise
Review 109:Central position in town, set back from the main road. Private car park behind hotel. Room 203 is spacious with a comfortable bed, it overlooks the High Street. Pretty gardens Good breakfast, freshly cooked. Evening meal available in either the Bistro or Dining room, book with RECEPTION to be sure of your preferred time and table. Steaks were very good
Review 110:Wifi was pretty slow but maybe that was part of the plan to encourage you to switch off! We literally couldn't fault anything else!
Review 111:My fiancé and I stayed one night after a wedding nearby and were sad not to be able to spend more time here. The staff were friendly and always helpful, the hotel is modern yet historic and our room was stunning with simple extras like two rosy red apples on a plate! A welcome retreat in a beautiful Cotswold town, which we'll certainly recommend!
Review 112:Bed base, roominess of bedroom, bedroom fittings seem cheap, bathroom function eg no shaver socket
Review 113:Location, parking, ambience, staff help, friendliness, responsiveness to requests about issues, garden, outside facilities.
Review 114:Minor points, and Im sure the first was simply an oversight but there were no toiletries left in the room and as its something they make a point of advertising it was a little strange. We were in the cottage at the back of the hotel and the bathroom was massive and lovely but there was no heat on and as such it wasnt warm. Id also have to say though a deep freestanding bath centered in the middle of the room is visually amazing its rubbish when you want a quick shower in the morning.
Review 115:The Kings is aesthetically a lovely hotel and as such a great place to chill and enjoy.
Review 116:No wifi connection was a big problem as I had booked on the basis there was Internet connection to check on work emails and be able to FaceTime my kids The bed was not a Double bed but two twins pushed together so not a comfortable sleep as you could feel the separation under the sheets
Review 117:The staff were very friendly and approachable. The room looked lovely and had a fab bathroom The food was excellent. Everything looked great and was clean
Review 118:Very few tables in bar, most had reserved signs on (reserved for bar meals?). No dressing table, had to stand to apply make-up or sit in bay window for all the world to see (overlooked car park).
Review 119:Parking on site. Large bedroom with good lighting. Excellent breakfast, cooked to order. Central position. Friendly and efficient staff.
Review 120:Bathroom had no shower only a bath, despite the generous size of the bathroom. Bedroom was small, difficult for 2 people to move. Furniture was cheap Ikea furniture. Hair dryer had lots of dust on it, quite disgusting. Walls were paper thin, could hear other guests conversations. Price of the hotel was quite expensive based on the facilities. You pay for location.
Review 121:Location was excellent. Staff were excellent, check in quick and efficient. Breakfast was tasty. Parking was excellent.
Review 122:Breakfast waiter struggled to understand requests and was pressured by the situation and therefore made mistakes. After speaking with hotel manager, waiter was given assistance and we were not charged for breakfast which was a nice gesture. Bedroom window did not stay open and we had to prop open with the waste bin!
Review 123:Hotel is in a beautiful setting. Decor and furnishings pleasant and comfortable. Very clean and tidy bedroom & bathroom.
Review 124:The window in the room wouldn't stay open, but we understand that it is a very old building. Wifi was good but only for one device at a time.It is also a bit expensive.
Review 125:It is a very nice hotel with a restaurant and a brassiere. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. We booked a king room which was on the first floor and quite spacious but the bed was just queen size I thought. The room faced the town square but it was not too noisy, just a normal city life that died off around 11 pm. We dined at the brasserie where it is more relaxed and food was good but not excellent. Breakfast was served at the restaurant and was lovely. Overall, we were pleased with our stay and would recommend this hotel.
Review 126:Our room/suite was in the attic which had a very narrow twisting stairway up from the door to the room. Quite small steps that twisted and were quite steep, unsuitable for people with health or mobility problems. There were very low beams and doorways. We booked a standard double room and although we were fine we did think that we should have been advised of the location of the room. Menu could have offered more choice.
Review 127:The food was excellent, even though the menu was small. The hotel was full of character and well maintained.
Review 128:The room was very very hot and very difficult to cool. The position of the room at the back of the hotel and overlooking the dustbin area beside the kitchen , I think, was less good.
Review 129:The room itself had lots of interesting extras and the bed linens etc were very good. The staff were superb and very very helpful. I also loved the position of the hotel in the heart of Chipping Camden.
Review 130:We stayed in the cottage - excellent bathroom and bath the size of a boat! Very large and comfortable bed. Walk out of the hotel and you are right in the middle of Chipping Campden. Not cheap, but worth the money for a special weekend away.
Review 131:Bed was not comfortable. Mattress has seen better days. Loose floor tile in the bathroom, Low floor door ceiling for tall people and no warning signs. Managed to hit head 4 times. Bed throw was stained and dirty.
Review 132:Nice staff , good location, good parking, nice pubs, nice shops and lovely village
Review 133:Car park being dug up. Noisy machinery, consequently not able to use garden. Given up grade although did not ask for it but then charged for it ( did not pay it). Kettle nowhere near plug. Two of the the three cooked options on breakfast menu not available.
Review 134:Light, airy room. Very comfortable bed. Good sized bathroom, great shower. Nice toiletries,
Review 135:WIFI was shocking. I was out of touch most of the weekend. Poor 3G in the area. Electric sockets not placed by bed in rooms Understand needs of guest. We come often for occasions. Need area for hair dryer and placing make up. Sinks and lighting. Arrived late on Friday eve. Only soup was tinned Heinz tomato. What a shame! Real homemade country soup from local produce would have made it extra special!! Embrace that your hotel is in such an amazing place for produce!! Unfriendly surly male waiter at breakfast.
Review 136:Location Atmosphere Good coffee supplies in rooms Very clean Friendly staff generally
Review 137:Poor rating on wifi is due to power outages in the Cotswolds while we were staying at the Kings Hotel. If this is common, wonder if an emergency generator might be worth thinking about...
Review 138:We booked a room several weeks in advance and asked for early check-in at the time of booking. We were travelling up from Devon to attend a wedding at a private house nearby and wanted to be able to relax after the journey and have some lunch at the hotel before changing and going on to the wedding. I also rang the hotel on the day before our stay to check that all was OK and that we could arrive early as arranged. I was told that this was fine. I also enquired about parking and was told that there would be no problem as the hotel has its own car park. When we arrived however, the hotel was closed due to a private function and the car park was full. Although we were able to check in to our room, we were not able to have lunch or use any of the hotel's facilities such as the bar or garden. Our complaint was not that the hotel had a private function going on but that we were not told this in advance. We had picked the hotel on the basis of what was described on the website and yet those facilities were not available to us. There had been ample opportunity for them to let us know the position before arrival. The Hotel was not good value for money as we were unable to use the facilities, the room had a bath but no shower, the bedding was of poor quality and the portions at breakfast were small. We would have had better value at a privately owned B & B.
Review 139:This hotel is in an excellent location in the High Street. It is very pretty from the outside. Check-in and check-out was straight forward and efficient. A porter was available to take our luggage to our room which was on the ground floor of the cottage annexe.
Review 140:One waitress but we were told she was leaving that day!
Review 141:In the centre of town, so could walk out of the front door into the centre of things. Good parking. Great Fish & Chips on Friday nights. 99% really friendly & helpful staff.
