This locally owned 17th century inn, is crammed with history, traditional local cask ales and plenty of character, and stands at the lower end of Chipping Campden's historic main shopping street.
The inn is set in the small Cotswold town of Chipping Campden, an area renowned for its natural beauty. It has a peaceful position within a few hundred yards of the center of town. It is located at the start of the Cotswold Way - a well known walk along the Cotswold Hill to Bath.
The inn was named The Volunteer in the mid 1800's because local men used to 'sign on' there for the volunteer armies.

Reviews for Volunteer Inn

Review 1:asked for ground floor they said it was not available, restaurant service slow, food poor ,breakfast too early only 7.30 till 8.30

Review 2:Bar area very good atmosphere good

Review 3:Lovely proper pub set in beautiful village. Clean well equipped bedrooms with excellent bathrooms. Log fire in bar with good drinks prices. Excellent cooked breakfast in the morning.

Review 4:- The room was quite spare, no proper closet or furniture other than the bed and a luggage rack.- TV didn't work at all. - Bed/mattress was quite hard and lumpy. - Biggest complaint: the internet (wifi) did NOT work in my room. I hired a car for this part of my trip and planned to do a bit of walking around the Cotswolds, and thought I would just figure out my routes and plan from the hotel. Ended up huddled in the bathroom because that was the only place I got a signal. Big pet peeve of mine — don't advertise that you have wifi in rooms if you truly don't. - Also (and I know this is nit-picky) didn't care for the massive room key (huge wooden key chain) — caused a bit of a racket going in/out of room and the bathroom and took up a lot of space in my purse. - Finally, when I tried to check out, there was no one around and all the doors were locked. Check out was at 10 a.m., so I feel like around 9 a.m. there should be someone around somewhere!

Review 5:Great location on high street (at one end), and very near the start ofthe Cotswolds Way if you're doing a walk. I had a room with sharedbathroom, and the bathroom was nice, roomy, and fortunately much warmerthan my room. Good restaurant (Indian) downstairs. Overall for the priceand location, not bad.

Review 6:Nothing!!!

Review 7:So very accommodation and even upgraded us just because they had a spare room! We hired bikes here, breakfast was lovely and great vibe in the evening.

Review 8:Booked in at 8.15 - a bit late as got stuck in traffic. One person at the bar and had to serve all customers before dealing with us. We were shattered after journey and would have appreciated prompt attention.

Review 9:Room was great - twin beds - not always easy to get. Very clean - all we could have wanted including a bottle of water each - appreciated and never been included in a stay before. Breakfast was excellent. Room faced the road but was still quiet.

Review 10:We loved the location, the pub below, the indian restaurant connected. Room with ensuite bathroom was perfect. Wore our earplugs on noisy nights and found the included morning breakfast to be wonderful! Drove all over the cotswolds and found Chipping Campden to be a great place to make our home base.

Review 11:There is a possiblity to have a heavily drunk man stay next door, throw out And slam the door several times midnight. In busy time of restaurant takes 45 min to server after dishes ordered.

Review 12:The owner did the best they can to make the stay as comfortable as much, and the Indian restaurant downstairs is good.

Review 13:no heating in daytime, feel cold.noise from downstairs cause there is a bar working into night.

Review 14:The staff.peter gave me lots of help,I am very thankful.

Review 15:Wifi didn't work. Tv had no reception Pillows were uncomfortable As with other reviews, this accommodation is above the busiest pub in town and can be noisy both pub crowd and other rowdy guests. We were prepared for the pub crowd but not for the rowdy guests next door who had been at the pub all night. We did not get any sleep till late.

Review 16:Position in town was good

Review 17:The bed was too soft for my personal preferences, though others in my group found the beds very comfortable.

Review 18:The room and bathroom were very clean and the breakfast was great. Polite, friendly and helpful staff.

Review 19:There is no parking onsite, despite the option to request such. The nearest parking spot that we could find was 5 minutes away. WiFi didn't reach our room.

Review 20:Very clean. Excellent indian restaurant onsite.

Review 21:Friendly staff, excellent breakfast. The Indian restaurant looked good although I didn't eat there and every table was full! Ideal start location for the Cotswold Way.

Review 22:The comments in booking.com said there could be some noise. Well, it is definitely noisy as from mid-afternoon until late at night (at least from Friday to Sunday evening). The rooms are above the noisiest pub in town. It was not too bad for us as we can sleep through anything but it is worth considering. A bit expensive.

Review 23:The room was quite big, with lots of light, very comfortable. Good breakfast as well. Wi-Fi connection was also good. Location is good.

Review 24:We were there on the pub's monthly music festival, our room was directly above pub - noise was horrendous & we were not made aware of this on your site when we booked. The room is unlettable on these occasions

Review 25:Convenience of the location

Review 26:Could not connect to wifi in room. Requested twin beds as travelling with a friend, given a double, very uncomfortable. Breakfast was tasteless and awful. Indian restaurant was worst Indian food ever had.

Review 27:location

Review 28:Shower turned off Wifi didn't work outside of bar

Review 29:Great service from main hotel "attendant"/bartender (Jenny?) Amazing breakfast Good pub scene

Review 30:It is noisy because the pub is just below. Best to join the crowd and stay up late!

Review 31:Huge, nicely cooked breakfast. Conveniently placed to explore Chipping Camden, Cotswold Way and other Cotswold villages.

Review 32:Would suggest to change from Indian restaurant to more traditional pub food. Indian food was good.

Review 33:Good choice of breakfast menu, friendly staff and a good out door area

Review 34:The most Restaurangs does not serve dinner after 9pm. The Indian restaurang looked good, but it was full....very hard to reserve it advance when you driving from longer distance. It would would be great if the Volunteer in could serve at least some snacks etc.

Review 35:Location is great in the charming village. Very close the Hidcote Garden.

Review 36:This place was amazing, and a good value for our money. Our room was HUGE! The restaurant offered good Indian food at a decent price. Staff was very accommodating.

Review 37:Loo seat needs fixing and automatic light on stairs didn't come on till I'd climbed the stairs. Super cooked breakfast but not much sign of the continental choice.

Review 38:Comfortable room and shower was the best one I've used for a long time.

Review 39:Unfortunately we were woken very early in the morning by a laundry delivery that repeatedly slammed the door from 6am downstairs to our rooms for over an hour before someone thought to put a door wedge in. This had happened twice in the night too. Easily remedied hopefully for other guests.

Review 40:Staff and owner were friendly. Room was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent.

Review 41:nothing

Review 42:the location, the staff and the room! The tiny French woman who cooked breakfast each morning was incredibly nice and welcoming! Peter was great to accommodate us! Met lots of Cotswold hikers!

Review 43:> No real negatives > Street parking could be an issue > Tight shower (very common) > Position of TV could be better > Needs higher power point

Review 44:> Friendly, helpful staff > Location on High Street > Close to shops / restaurants > No noise from pub below > Full breakfast was good > Value for money

Review 45:Breakfast is quite early

Review 46:Location They let me have access to the room to change for a wedding.... never guaranteed but really appreciated when offered!

Review 47:Basic room. Wifi didn't work.TV signal not great. Not very sound proof room. Breakfast okay but few items missing from what was advertised. All okay, but basic and not worth the price charged.

Review 48:Great location in Chipping Campden.

Review 49:The noise from bar was a little loud but understandable for been in an inn but would be a problem if your a light sleeper.

Review 50:The room was very clean and staff welcoming, breakfast was good size and quality.

Review 51:Unfortunately up grade was to room 5 above kitchen so a lot of loud noise, doors banging etc till way after 11.00pm not good if you need an early night

Review 52:Good location, clean room, friendly staff, up graded to en suite room at no extra charge

Review 53:Nothing

Review 54:The location was second to none..this is what i expected anyway being a visitor to The Cotswolds regularty however was really happy with the pub/accommodation..room was clean, everything i needed and right above the pub..no problems with noise and certainly no problems drinking the beer in a small but great atmosphere..me and a friend shared and we ll both be back

Review 55:Luckily I went to bed quite late as my room was above the bar. But at exactly 12am (it was a weekend) there was complete silence, so it didn't impact me personally - just be advised if you're an early sleeper! The breakfast is a little basic, but given the price, not really complaining.

Review 56:Large, comfortable, warm room with a hand basin and my own bathroom, which had recently been fully renovated, just along the corridor.

Review 57:Nothing, all was fine

Review 58:Wonderful hotel with bags of warmth, and that not just from the welcoming open fire in the main bar. One site indian restaurant is also of particular note.

Review 59:Perfect setting, really nice people set in a fantastic village. Good price and good indian restaurant for the dinner Fantasti english breakfast

Review 62:Stayed in room 1 in the back. Large room. Quiet, nice linens. good bed, great wifi connection. Very convenient for exploring the town on foot and surrounding Cotswold villages by auto. Parking nearby. A great "Proper" English Fry breakfast made to order.

Review 63:Very clean, very convenient! Walk around quaint donwtown Woodstock. Two minutes to Blenheim Palace. A lovely place with a delicious breakfast. Highly recommended.

Review 64:Walls are thin and could hear a man snoring in the room below us all night and a baby crying across the hall. Check in was a bit unorganized, as we had to do it in the bar at the same time as people ordering drinks.

Review 65:Liked the price, room was nice, and enjoyed the breakfast.

Review 66:Pub was very noisy, after ten o'clock (then it was Saturday night).

Review 67:Staff pleasant and room clean. Beautiful little village. Big breakfast was good also.

Review 68:We called by this hotel after travelling around Europe on our way home and they were just the ticket, relaxed and friendly, very helpful and room and facilities were everything we needed and more.Had read negative reviews about noise levels, but noise in room was very little until 11.00 then silent and if you can't tolerate any noise at all, don't stay in a pub!!!
