Reviews for The Falstaff in Canterbury

Review 1:The owners closed the restaurant and opened an evening bar instead with an incredible loud crowd. So there was no food, no room service but drunk and noisy people instead.

Review 2:The location was tops with free accessible parking. The beds were very comfortable and the room clean.

Review 3:Room had a bath/shower rather than walk in shower.

Review 4:A very good hotel in the centre of Canterbury, with alot of character. I use a mobility scooter which I brought to the hotel and stayed in the Woodmill. The reception area and bar have been very nicely refurbished.

Review 5:Non smoking room No. 16 had a strong smell of cigarette smoke - we are both non smokers so it was a bit unpleasant. The Restaurant next door uses a small balcony just under the room window as it smoking area - very noisy until about 11. 45 pm.

Review 6:Location is superb - just a short pleasant walk to the High Street & hub of the town.

Review 7:The room and bathroom allotted to us need updating. In the 21st century, we didn't expect to have to crawl under a table to use the ONLY double electrical socket in the room, which had to serve the TV, kettle, table lamp hairdryer etc.! There were no bedside lights, so no reading in bed and getting out of bed to put out the main room light was not funny! The TV was behind the bed so no watching the late night news! The shower over the bath was an old fashioned arrangement not thermostatically controlled, so you were either scalded or frozen! We had booked this room at least six weeks before our arrival so it was not a case of a late booking. We understood from the reception staff, when paying our bill the next day, that a programme of updating was underway, and this was evident from the public rooms we saw, but our room was obviously still awaiting improvement!

Review 8:The staff were friendly and helpful, in spite of the hotel being very busy as it was only a few days before Christmas. Breakfast was excellent in a very pleasant dining room.

Review 9:A lovely double room of a good size but the bathroom let it down. It was dated and in need of a re-fit, but something makes me think that this is planned based on the good condition of everything else, and the repairs being undertaken.

Review 10:Great location, with parking, which is unusual for Canterbury hotels. Good breakfast. The refit of the reception, bar and restaurant is lovely!

Review 11:Rooms were a little dated in comparison to communal areas (at least in the annexe bit we were in)

Review 12:Great location, really well refurbished smart central areas, good bar and excellent breakfast.

Review 13:The noise from the bar was awful. I could not even listen to the television or get to sleep. I wanted to have a nice relaxing evening before househunting the following day.it was anything but relaxing. On leaving I asked to speak to the Manager to make a complaint. I was told they were not there but would be in contact.I have had no response.

Review 14:Location

Review 15:The room was above the bar or restaurant and the noise filtered up into our room. We are not night owls and this did cause some slight irritation.

Review 16:Very warm welcome when we arrived, although we were to early to check in we were still allowed to park our car and walk into the centre of Canterbury without having to worry about parking meters. Welcoming letter in the room, extremely lovely touch, nothing was a problem, extra pillows and fresh milk bought to the room. Room was small and cosy, bed lovely and comfy, bathroom clean. Fantastic service at breakfast lots on offer all tastes catered for. The full English breakfast was cooked to order, and extremely tasty

Review 17:There was a slight 'smell' in the bathroom - but nothing to write home about!

Review 18:My room was advertised as 'cozy' - and 'cozy' it was. Had to duck down to enter the room. The bed was very comfy and it had a large bathroom. Breakfast was good and great to be able to park the car at the hotel.

Review 19:Shower in my room was very slow and weak. Bath took ages to fill and toilet cistern and tank was very noisy.

Review 20:Great location. Good bar. Fabulous breakfasts. Really helpful staff.

Review 21:The bathroom was rather in need of updating, really, but it was very clean and a good size - although we did have trouble getting the water temperature right! We wouldn't hesitate to return, however, as we had a great time here.

Review 22:We really enjoyed our 3 nights over New Year in this hotel, which has such a welcoming "feel" as soon as you enter. We loved the brilliant location - just a few minutes walk to the cathedral, shops, pubs and restaurants (of which there were plenty!), a very large and comfortable bed, the friendly staff, cocktails and the lively New Year's Eve party - it was a lovely surprise to find tickets in our room. Free on-site parking was such a bonus, too.

Review 23:Parking was an issue and despite checking with staff that it was ok to "double park" and being assured that it was, we received a very rude note from the manager, left on the car. Disappointing, as this meant we left with bitter taste and will not re-book despite having stayed numerous times before.

Review 24:Lovely hotel, recently refurbished bar and restaurant area although rooms still a little dated but perfectly comfortable. Breakfast was good too.

Review 25:We've stayed here several times but this was our first stay since the refurbishment - and we were very impressed. The ground floor has been transformed into a modern, trendy area with busy bar, while the seating areas are plentiful and comfortable, and the olde-worlde ambiance of the building hasn't been compromised. Our room was on the small side but extremely clean and comfortable. As ever, the Falstaff's staff were welcoming and professional and always helpful. We look forward to our next visit when some of the rooms will have been refurbished - it'll be interesting to see how they are done, but we expect the Falstaff's impeccable standards to be maintained. As always, an excellent stay. Thank you.

Review 26:Breakfast! Wait was too long due to staff shortages. Old system of buffet breakfast including the cooked items was better.

Review 27:Location, comfy room with very good facilities.

Review 28:The shower was a trickle & went hot & cold on & off

Review 29:The dinning area, lounge, bar & reception areas are beautiful The location is perfect

Review 30:In the new restaurant, the soft lighting meant we couldn't read the menu - the colour of the print and paper did not work. The guests next to us used the torches on their mobile phones! And the car park really needs to be filled in - on the morning we left there was a huge puddle.

Review 31:We love the new design of the hotel - very modern but somehow it works with the old building. Well done.

Review 32:Waited 65 minutes to be served breakfast, which meant we had to check out late. They said it was because too many people came down for breakfast at the same time, however, the hotel was not fully booked and others who came down for breakfast after us were served before us.

Review 33:Free parking, comfortable bed, lovely room, friendly staff.

Review 34:TV didn't work and it took a bit of pushing to be moved for our second night. The gent on reception was very good though, much more aware than the manager. He arranged a new room and moved all our luggage, including a lot of Xmas shopping. Bar was very crowded but in fairness it was close on Xmas.

Review 35:Excellent location Comfortable and clean rooms Bar staff were very good. They were friendly and professional and had me laughing!

Review 36:None

Review 37:The staff were very friendly, helpful. Parking was included in the price. We choose the Falstaff as we had come to see my son and girlfriend who live in Canterbury it was lovely that we were able to pay for them to have a breakfast with us in the hotel. Made our trip very special. And excellent value for money!

Review 38:this is our 3rd time and they still can't get the breakfast sittings organised,it is no longer self service as on previous stay so we thought would be better unfortunately this was not the case it was find a seat and hope to be served they defenatley need someone to oversee the restaurant so as with previous stays we on our 3rd day at breakfast in the wetherspoons next door

Review 39:our room was lovely clean beds comfortable staff welcoming would definitely stay again on room only basis

Review 40:I stayed in room 24, admittedly at a last minute price, which is not recommended. It's a ground floor room with the window fronting onto the busy street and right next to the next door pub. I was awoken at 7am by the pub barrel deliveries.

Review 41:It's an old coaching inn in central Canterbury with lovely rooms (including a nice big bath), a good breakfast and a well stocked bar that's also open to the public.

Review 42:Loved the Falstaff quaint room we had it was brilliant lovely bathroom . Comfy bed.The staff were excellent.overall the hotel very warm and well coming great place to stay . We will be definitely back .

Review 43:Showerhead very small and almost no waterpressure, several breakfast items werd unavailable, that was a pity

Review 44:Very pleasant hotel, near city centre, lively cocktailbar, quiet room, comfy bed, helpfull staff, spacious and closed car park

Review 45:downstairs refurbished. upstairs small, outdated and noisy rooms, inherent to old building...maybe difficult to find better in Canterbury

Review 46:excellent location, nice breakfast, free car park

Review 47:Since last staying it has had a major refurbishment to Bar/reception/Restaurant.. all done with style and quality, staff as always helpful and polite and provide excellent service .. Will be returning in the near future, Location is excellent as next the the West gate. Our room was very clean and comfortable , bit tired here and there but passable .

Review 48:couldn't give negative as it would be too picky

Review 49:Walk through west gate which is 20 Metres away and you have an amazing selection of bars restaurants and shops

Review 50:Being woken at 6am on a Sunday morning with deliveries for the pub next door. Bathroom clean but dated.

Review 51:Staff were excellent. Location fantastic. It's a plus that there's parking but parking is a bit difficult. Breakfast good. Hotel Price excellent.

Review 52:Bedrom was small but comfortable. It was a pity as Canterbury is near to the coast that there was not a fish choice on the breakfast menu.

Review 53:The location of the Hotel was excellent as one could walk to all the amenities in Canterbury. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

Review 54:The shower did not work in my friends room. They reported it but it was not fixed nor was there any feedback or explanation. Spoilt what was otherwise a very lovely stay.

Review 55:Excellent location for city centre and train station. Excellent food for breakfast and dinner. Overall very helpful staff.

Review 56:I visited with my 10 year old daughter and our room was above the bar. Unfortunately I was not made aware of the noise. Music was pounding each night until 12.30, which meant I had a very tired child each day.

Review 57:Lovely, cosy room and clean. Breakfast was great.

Review 58:Second time I have stayed here and both times I have stayed in an attic room in buildings on the other side of courtyard. Somehow you do not feel like you are actually staying in the hotel.

Review 59:Great hotel for location. Breakfast was excellent. Staff very helpful and no problems with leaving bag in before check in time.

Review 60:It would have been nice to have a residents bar. It was so busy we couldn't find a seat to have a few drinks when we came back from a meal. We ended going next door to wetherspoons.

Review 61:Location, Room and Breakfast

Review 62:Rooms need updating, was rushed to check out, music in bar till late, breakfast not cooked to order bacon like leather.

Review 63:Great location, bar and restaurant newly refurbished , car parking, friendly staff

Review 64:We did not have a evening meal in the restaurant because of lack of choice and price.

Review 65:Near to town, good breakfast, newly decorated public areas since our last stop two years ago.

Review 66:The room was in the old original part of the building so can forgive it being on the small side, but bathroom is in need of refurbishment. Dripping basin tap, shower riser rail broken, dirty grout around bath and mould on the silicone seal. Also room heating pretty much all or nothing.

Review 67:Great location for the city, very pleasant and helpful staff and excellent standard to the public areas. Good value breakfast. Comfortable bed.

Review 68:The room was extremely small and very "tired". The bathroom was desperately in need of refurbishment and the shower was little more than a dribble. Although we appreciate it is close to Christmas, the bar area was extremely busy on Friday evening and it was almost impossible to find somewhere to sit.

Review 69:The ground floor, i.e. reception, bar and lounge have been recently refurbished and are very pleasant.

Review 70:THE ROOM WAS AT THE FRONT OF THE HOTEL ON THE GROUND FLOOR SO RATHER NOISY. THE BATHROOM WAS VERY DIRTY AND THERE WAS DRIED BLOOD ON THE WALL. NOT THE BEST FOR HYGIENE.

Review 71:THE HOTEL WAS LOVELY AND THE STAFF WERE EXTREMELY HELPFUL. BREAKFAST WAS GOOD AND WITH PLENTY OF VARIETY. VERY RELAXING ATMOSPHERE.

Review 72:The fact that we was on the second floor in a room with 2 roof lite Windows that you couldn't see out of so no view at all and uncomfortable beds

Review 73:Location was good

Review 74:The room & bathroom were grubby & the decor in need of redoing, there were numerous chunks out of the plaster. The room was above the bar & was very noisy the music etc.went on till 1.00am & was turned back on at 7.00am. The shower didn't work properly. We were unable to park at the hotel & had to pay in a public car park to park.

Review 75:The bed lined was clean as were the towels. Tea/coffee & toiletries were provided.

Review 76:My only complaint would be the evening meal nothing wrong with staff just think meals are very overpriced for what they are we had steak rib eye ok but the chateau briand left a lot to be desired and at 44pounds well overpriced wine ok

Review 77:Very comfortable hotel and some of the best polite staff we have encountered hotel was warm beds comfortable and very clean only drawback is noisy road at night could invest in some double glazing in annexe

Review 78:On the last visit the ad hoc diners and parties bookings took priority over paying guests, we therefore could not get bar snacks or any kind of food, so we had to eat out on several occasions.

Review 79:We travel 5 to 7 times a year to see children and grandchildren. Location and bar area is ideal to meet up. Warm and Friendly people with good commitment to regular loyal customers.

Review 80:Excellent breakfast but kept having to ask for sugar, milk, coffee cups. Would have been easier if already on table. Nice waitresses though, very helpful.

Review 81:Friendly staff, comfy bed, car parking, nice evening meal. Hotel very busy probably due to Christmas parties but had lovely buzzy feel to it.

Review 82:Very noisy and busy ground floor on Saturday and Sunday. Room #1 was noisy (squeaks from outside hotel sign blown in the wind, despite double window panes) and bathroom in deep need of renovation.

Review 83:Location is excellent: close to Canterbury's pedestrian area. Breakfast (Continental and full English) included in room price. Good coffee. Free parking.

Review 84:We planned to have diner there but although there were tables free, they did not want to serve diner because they said it was already too busy.

Review 85:great location and superb breakfast

Review 86:I am short and fitted the room perfectlyI stayed in Room 1 , interesting, quirky, but a problem for anyone over about 5 6. Furnishings tired and need a refit

Review 87:Staff were universally helpful. The bar was friendly and efficient and the Pinot Grigo excellent. Breakfast quickly serve and good

Review 88:Excellent location for exploring Canterbury. The bar and restrurant very comfortable and service was good.Breakfast could have been a little hotter as think it had been standing for a while.

Review 89:The room we had booked was described as 'cosy', and it was, fair enough! However the relatively spacious bathroom was very outdated and shower temperatures extremely difficult to control.

Review 90:The public areas are very comfortable and the interior design throughout is attractive. Staff were very pleasant and helpful throughout our stay. The free car parking in such a central location was a real asset.

Review 91:our quilt cover had a big tear in it,the room was extremely noisy at night, could'nt open bathroom windows at all in case of an emergency !.mould on bathroom walls.

Review 92:breakfast

Review 93:The low ceiling beams in places seemed to be a magnet for tall people like me!?

Review 94:The location was perfect for central Canterbury and for the Canterbury West train station. The facilities in general and the service provided by staff was excellent. The recent renovations also provide the hotel with a more modern look without spoiling the historic nature of the building.

Review 95:The bedrooms and bathrooms require some attention. What upset me was I made a booking for two rooms under my name. We had one room in main building and the other outside when we all wanted to be together ie room next to each other or near by. When we spoke to the manger he just laughed and wasn't very helpful in sorting it out. He offered us a drink! We were on a girls weekend from Brussels and we all wanted to be close to each other. Disappointed how the manager responsed and that he didn't sort it out.

Review 96:Bar area was great. Been referbished. Location fab.

Review 97:Poor breakfast service: first we had to wait 15 min for the waitress to take the order, and after half an hour the plate was not on the table! We couldn't wait any longer so we had to leave before having a proper breakfast! (which is included in the price, isn't it?). The staff was smiling but clearly not efficient.

Review 98:Nice location, good bed

Review 99:We had to wait ages at the bar for a glass of wine. There were quite a few bar staff but some weren't serving and others making cocktails.

Review 100:The staff on reception were friendly and welcoming. We Didnt stay in the main building, the room was lovely and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was fab.

Review 101:Jigger of milk in room was rancid. Stayed in dozens of hotels whilst working and this is the first time that it has happened. How can a panna cotta take 25 minutes to materialise?

Review 102:pleasant staff

Review 103:Overpriced! Noisy location, room temperature was either very hot or very cold (the windows couldn't be opened and heating was from an electrical radiator),the room and bathroom were old and rundown (just because it's a historical building the rooms can still be updated with modern amenities),breakfast area was chaotic with lack of staff, disappointing breakfast, late check-in (2pm), we got woken in the middle of the night from a false fire alarm and no apology from staff.

Review 104:Central location, complimentary car park (although not many parking spaces), comfy mattress, late bar, nice entrance and reception area

Review 105:Although ground floor reception/restaurant/bar had been modernised through out since our last visit two years ago, the rooms are in dire need of refurbishment. However, staff informed us that this is due to take place next year. Car park area could also do with improvements.

Review 106:Helpful staff.

Review 107:Nothing.

Review 108:Lovely room (2) at top of main building which is full of character. Perfect location with free parking and easy access to Canterbury's many attractions.

Review 109:Fire alarm went off, apparently 3 times within a few days. Just once during our 2 night stay. Had to pester night porter for a drink, he claimed he hadn't been trained for bar work. Served us after some persuasion, so no problem.

Review 110:Great position, friendly staff, comfortable rooms, good wi-fi, Wetherspoons next door!

Review 111:Plenty of helpful staff and very good service. Excellent location. Free parking.Very good food, the breakfast was excellent with quick and efficient service. the soup in the evening was especially delicious.

Review 112:Bed was a little hard for my liking and cleanliness of room/bathroom could be better

Review 113:location and bar/reception/hotel area. Room comfortable and good value for money with cooked breakfast

Review 114:As above

Review 115:Overall was good. Found service of bar staff poor. Initially had to be told by manager that we were waiting to be served. In return from evening out four staff chatting and had to approach them and ask for service.

Review 116:The rooms were in need of some refurbishment. Although we had pre-ordered one gluten free breakfast, the choice was limited to bread - no cereals.

Review 117:Excellent location. Nice reception area and lounge.

Review 118:The shower wasn't very good although the water was very hot. The mirror in the bathroom was too low down. I had to bend down to shave. The picture on the tv was good but the choice of channels was very limited. The décor was very tired.

Review 119:The staff were very friendly and helpful. The beds were comfortable

Review 120:Bedrooms need updating although the first time we stayed we was in the old wood mill rooms and they were lovely

Review 121:Stayed at this hotel twice and the refurbishment is beautiful, great location and lovely breakfast

Review 122:Refurbishment is amazing - we loved The Falstaff before but it's even better now! Looking forward to staying again when the bedrooms have been refreshed!

Review 123:Breakfast was quite minimal; not many scrambled eggs, not many mushrooms, tomato ran out. No room service, even though we put the sign up on our door and was out of the room for roughly 5 hours, with a small return in between. Reused and washed our own cups, no big deal, but quite surprising for a nice hotel.

Review 124:The decor of the bar and entrance was amazing. Room was a perfect size, beds and pillows were super comfy and a great amount of pillow supplied too. Staff were friendly, great that they held the suitcase after checkout so we could get a massage too.

Review 125:Only two little niggles after 3 years of regular visits. One was that the hot water ran out one morning, and another was that the building and our room were too warm despite no radiators being on. Luckily one can open the window which helped a little. Also felt their refurbishment, while making the hotel look smarter and probably more appealing to businesses, resulted in a loss of the character of an old coaching inn, especially from the outside where the brickwork has been inexplicably covered in a brown sludge!

Review 126:Stall always friendly and helpful. Room in Woodmill annex very comfortable and quiet, even on Friday and Saturday nights. Very helpfully gave us our requested blankets on the bed instead of duvets.

Review 127:Room was very small.

Review 128:Really great decor and atmosphere. Secure parking included in the price. Having breakfast included. Location was really close to everything. Staff were good. Very reasonably priced

Review 129:When we checked in they gave us a room that hasn't been cleaned at all with the bad dirty and the toilet as well. In addition the roof was really law and the room small

Review 130:Good position

Review 131:No bad experience, but will look forward to visiting again when the bedrooms have been refurbished.

Review 132:Great, stylish newly refurbished public areas give a boutique vibe. The breakfast was excellent and the whole experience felt like very good value. The staff were friendly, welcoming and professional.

Review 133:Nothing, it's a lovely hotel

Review 134:Gorgeous hotel with friendly staff. Breakfast was lovely. My room no 30 in the tap house was lovely, clean, warm and very comfortable.

Review 135:the shower was not very powerful and I would have liked a decaff option in the compliomentary tea/coffee sachets

Review 136:staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly; food was excellent; room was small but comfy

Review 137:The gadget to insert the door code to access the room (situated in the Annex of the hotel). Totally ridiculous to operate. The taps (one for hot water, one for cold water!! just like in the 50'). Plus the hot water was burning, very dangerous if you have young children or old people.

Review 138:The situation of the hotel - the space allocated to guests - the facilities for meals. The decoration

Review 139:Bedroom very tired. Problems with shower attachment and bathroom in need of refurbishment.

Review 140:Renovations excellent, bar area and sitting room very comfortable. Bar staff extremely pleasant and helpful.

Review 141:The room we stayed in (53) was a little dated but we were told that a refurbishment is coming soon.

Review 142:The Falstaff was a really good place to stay in Canterbury, the location was brilliant and the free parking was very handy. For a quiet room, ask for a room in the old woodmill. The staff were really nice and friendly and couldn't be more helpful. We will definitely stay here again!

Review 143:02/11/15 Receptionist unprofessional: I called the reception for having the hair-drier fixed and to have the heather working but with no result: hair wet and cold room. The receptionist answered: "I will send someone to fix the hair-drier"... nobody has arrived. She answered to second request in this way: "I will find for you a heather"... nobody has been seen. It is very disappointing to have answers like these but without a result, I've been felt cheated. I called the receptionist again and another person answered saying: "We don't have any heather but we can provide more blankets" (really!? The previous answer was that a heather would have been provided...).... disaster of professionalism... 69£ for 1 night in a double but horrible service

Review 144:Hotel with nice big rooms and comfortable. Big bathroom and very nice lounge for breakfast
