Reviews for Old Grey Mare Inn by Good Night Inns
Review 1:Very noisy room with loud extractor rumbling until late at night. Radiators either too hot or off. Mattress needed replacing. Bathroom dated. Broken extractor fan, no towel rail, shaving mirror light broken, blocked sink.
Review 2:Friendly and helpful staff. Opposite the university so very convenient. Good wifi. Clean enough. Decent value.
Review 3:Bedrooms were very clean and nicely decorated - only thing with one room was that the shower water did not run away very easily - however only slight criticism. Breakfast very nice and very helpful staff. This accommodation was chosen because our daughter was visiting the University. Excellent location for our needs and could be handy if our daughter decides to go to University here.
Review 4:The easily accessible bar right below us. Myself and my partner could come and go as we pleased from our room to go eat and have a drink. There was very little noise to disturb us and the rooms were warm and comfy
Review 5:As a hotel there were no permanent staff for check-in, if they were busy in the pub you just had to wait and generally not rushing to serve guests. Rooms were not as shown on booking.com as I had booked what I thought was a much larger family room for my parents and paid extra as the space. I was given a small room with a separate single bedroom rather than the large room displayed. Considering the excellent food standards of a Flaming Grill, breakfast was under whelming.
Review 6:They were flexible when we had to change the room as what was provided was not suitable to meet my parents needs. The manager, he helped me sort out the room difficulties and if not for him score would've been lower.
Review 7:Everything is good there is nothing that I didn't like.
Review 8:It is convenient for visiting Hull or Beverly and excellent for visiting the university of Hull
Review 9:There is nothing they can change however the weaving long corridor to get to the room is like going through a rabbit warren (which is a bit weird). But this is not a fault, just part of the building.
Review 10:After only attending the Pub for meals in previous years, I was a bit uncertain about the noise and the facilities as a hotel. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the full-sized bathroom, comfortable bed and how quiet it was (we must have had a great room :-)). The staff were very friendly and the breakfast in the morning was excellent and served cheerfully. For a clean budget hotel, I recommend the Old Grey Mare.
Review 11:Room No2 decor felt a tired. Could do with some TLC. Had difficulty working the shower mixer taps, so bathed in very hot water ......... Not such a good idea. Parking at times could be difficult for residents, a residents only parking section would be ideal. Have mobility issues so the unique layout of the property would have proved impossible had I been on my own. More tea bags in room would have been good. Limited to one cup per person per day. Breakfast only available 7-9 even an extra half hour would have allowed us to try it.-
Review 12:The staff were brilliant, very friendly & helpful.. The food in the restaurant and pub was also very good.Great selection of dishes to suit variety of tastes.Waiting staff very attentive but not overpowering. Being just across from the uni it was a good place to meet with students.
Review 13:Facilities a little dated and in need of touch up.
Review 14:Welcome plenty of tea and coffee, conveniently located. Bed comfortable and plenty of hot water. Towels lovely and very reasonably priced.
Review 15:didnt like the noise from the fan out side the bedroom window room 6 , was pretty noisy and did keep me awake most of the time
Review 16:value for money and a nice pub with very good food
Review 17:only a little thing but was waiting a long time for my boys ice cream, then was told they had no record of it, went to get it and was still waiting so went to bar to see if they could sort It and they did
Review 18:the food, accommodation and most of the staff were lovely, would definitely come back
Review 19:Room 2 had many deficiencies. Maze of stairs/doors/bends to get to room. Old ill-fitting window (draughts), view of bins, noise from kitchen extractor outside, shaver socket/light not working, shower knob faulty, washbasin plug didn't fit properly so leaked water out.
Review 20:Beds/pillows comfortable. Towels big and fluffy. Meal tasty.
Review 21:The price's for 2 days were both different which I wasn't very happy with
Review 22:It was in a good location for me visiting someone and a nice room and hotel
Review 23:Friendly Staff, decent food at reasonable prices. I did the Flaming Grill Burger Challenge (see photo), it took some shifting but I just about managed it
Review 24:There were bed bugs in the room. I complained at reception, they didn't charge us for the night and were allowed to cancel the remaining days we had booked in this inn. The rooms are outdated, the corridor to get to the room absurdly long, with several steps up and down, and turns and fire doors. However did the floor planning of this place? The carpet retains the smell of smoking of the last 30 years at least. The bathroom is outdated. You would get much more from a budget backpackers hostel than this place, paying just a fraction of the price.
Review 25:Free parking.
Review 26:breakfast finished at 9 am during week days. this is too early, especially for people on leisure holidays.
Review 27:very warm and welcoming hotel, with friendly and helpful staff.very nice location.
Review 28:Layout of the rooms through endless fire doors and up and down countless small staircases; this building was obviously never designed, just thrown together from other properties. Would be very difficult when arriving/departing with kids/lots of luggage or if not very mobile. Hot water was too hot; terrible bath tap system; great difficulty in adding cold water; function to switch to shower did not work, so no shower (just as well as it would have been dangerously hot).
Review 29:Location; good quality large towels; size of room
Review 30:My room was at the back, so I heard the 'smokers' outside as they were essentially under the window. I could also hear the kitchen clearing up. That was more annoying than the smokers who weren't too bad. The worst though, was a banging noise. I didn't work out what that was until the next morning. It was the main door out to the back of the pub ( smoking area and car park). Whenever it was used, it clattered back with a really loud bang. Breakfast also took 30 mins to be served I nearly had to leave as I would have been late. As it was, I had to quickly scoff a bit down and leave the rest. There were only 5 diners in the breakfast area.
Review 31:Great location for the university. It is a pub and I expected some noise, but the customers were not too noisy ( it was a Thursday night that I stayed). The bacon at breakfast was lovely.
Review 32:Fire doors were very noisy when used which was still happening at 01.15 - door closing mechanisms gave loud bang after door was used. Lack of maintenance???
Review 33:Easy access to residential area - breakfast was first class
Review 34:i was put in a room that i had booked for three nights and found the tv reception not working (ariel lead) , window latch droken off(unable to close window properly) and the sink very slow to drain after a shave and a wash
Review 35:the duty manager(fri 31st oct) that was shift about 4 pm who was very helpful
Review 36:Comfortable, warm and cozy with everything I needed. In a good part of town and opposite the University. Food available in the pub below if hungry. Would be happy to stay again while visiting my daughter.
Review 37:Telly didn't work in the room but had free wifi so not much of a problem
Review 38:Helpful staff great location for work Plenty of parking Good sized portion of food for the hungry traveller
Review 39:The rooms were too far away and our room (2) was right above the kitchen fan which was on until approx 0100 and even made the bed vibrate . When we complained to staff they weren't bothered and said join the queue of complaints
Review 40:It was cosy clean and very friendly The staff were always helpful and polite I loved the room only the mattress marred the stay as I could feel bed springs otherwise perfect stay
Review 41:The cleaner didn't do any serious cleanup for the 3 nights I was in the hotel.
Review 42:My room was clean , towels n sheets were also clean , though I worried about the bar being in the premises but I didn't hear a thing from where my room was located.
Review 43:Perfect location directly opposite the University for the weekend chess tournament. Good selection of options for breakfast. Large car park at the rear for residents.
Review 44:A series of different aged buildings requiring the transit of a series of up and down stairs to get to our room at the farthest end from reception
Review 45:It suited our needs where its specific location was not so important to us. Good on site parking and nice atmosphere.
Review 46:Although not required but No telephone in the room
Review 47:Very clean room, towels were renewed every day. Location, just opposite to university and bus stop.
Review 48:Firstly, I have put a complaint into the pub/b&b? With the manager. He has taken my address and contact details and he's supposedly coming back to me on the filthy room and poor facilities. Firstly we complained that the room was very expensive for what was offered. The room was filthy, it had never been vacummed, there was six inches of muck on the skirting boards etc. th beds linen was blood stained and you couldn't even shower as the water was scoulding. There was no cold water coming through to cool it doesn't. I have photos of which I can attach.
Review 49:Nothing!
Review 50:Room 3 was above a door which banged open/closed till the early hours and kept me awake, also used from 6.30 am, would ask for a quieter room as I am A LIGHT sleeper People smoking outside the front door Not enough tea/coffee sachets
Review 51:location, free parking, beer garden, towels and bed linen
Review 52:On booking in we were told we could always get in if pub was closed at back of building. On day of leaving I tried to get out at 7am to load up car reception/bar door was closed all other doors were fire doors.2 other guests were also stood waiting to pay and go but could not get out. I was later told we could have gone out through fire door. We had waited an hour.i was so cross I did not wait for breakfast and 1 guest left his keys with me an left without paying he was late for a meeting
Review 53:Food was excellent and good value
Review 54:broken window frame in room so wouldn't shut therefore cold. no heating. reported this to duty manager - on arrival and again at 11pm but nothing done. toilet seat broken and some food options missing from breakfast. no offer of recompense for problems.
Review 55:As its a Sizzler or similar chain the evening food was predictable and good. Staff were generally friendly.
Review 56:View from window obstructed by overgrown trees, pipe from industrial fan and rubbish bins. Noise disturbances consisted of persistent blurring from industrial fan immediately outside window, bins being filled @ 11.45pm, together with beer barrels being changed. Decor was 'tired', with mould on windows and broken fixtures (eg, window handle). Each bed was attached to a wall which vibrated continuously. After the evening meal, I was expected to sign a blank slip, with no indication of cost, and to wait until checkout the following morning before finding out how much we'd spent on food/drinks. At the end of the evening, we were unable to purchase a bag of crisps because the tills had been switched off ... Apparently no facility for adding a few pence to the following morning's invoice ...
Review 57:Free car park
Review 58:The bedding wasn't changed at all over the 4 nights we stayed there. And there wasn't enough milk, coffee etc put in room.
Review 59:The evening meal in the restaurant was good.
Review 60:Had a long walk to our room which was up and down a total of 32 stairs and through about six fire doors. On the last night the machine below room No 1 wasn't turned off, so a sleepless night.
Review 61:Overall we had a good time and the room was quiet most of the time.
Review 62:A bit of a walk to the nearest bank ATM and no shops nearby, but there was a pay cash machine in the hotel, I was just too mean to use it.
Review 63:The cleanliness of the rooms, the sunshine in the morning in the well-kept garden and the warmth, helpfulness and efficiency of the staff.
Review 64:just a bit to many stairs for our elderly freinds
Review 65:great value for money, good location for what we wanted and excellent staff and good food with lots of offers on.
Review 66:The room was too far to walk to and staff were understaffed and the room was small and over priced for a two star hotel the breakfast wasn't very nice few beans on plate with no sauce dry no water available for tea has to wait 10mins and no orange juice available had to wait for top up.
Review 67:The ample parking and nice staff.
Review 68:The smell of burgers and chip grease does sometimes waft up from the pub kitchen through the windows to the rooms. The hotel was kept very warm, even during summer.
Review 69:The pub/hotel is handily located, and has a limited free parking facility. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Review 70:Staff weren't very helpful
Review 71:When I checked in I was waiting ages for someone to arrive. When someone did it was a young lass who informed me she only had half an hour til she clocked off and couldn't wait to go home. It did not give a good first impression. Room was small for a double and was dusty and the carpet looked like it needed a hoover.
Review 72:Bit noise but to be expected when trying to sleep during day after nightshift. Our room was above waist bins of hotel.
Review 73:Convenient to location for work.
Review 74:The fact that the ventilation fan was just outside our window. It hummed all through the night and kitchen sounds were very audible through it as well. The owner just brushed these complaints aside when we paid and did not offer us a reduction which I wish we had insisted upon now.He claimed we ought to have noticed the fan situation and noises in the website when we booked which was not mentioned at all. I'm not saying our stay was a complete disaster but avoid Room No 3 should you wish to stay at this hotel. yourself.
Review 75:The fact we could get our evening meal there.
Review 76:The staff were all super friendly and helpful. Everyone makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Great pub food at reasonable prices. Would definitely stay again.
Review 77:The Quiz night. This was very slow and the quiz master was not really fully focused.
Review 78:Location excellent. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent. Steak night was brilliant
Review 79:Thought the breakfast price wise was very expensive. Me and a friend both got a full English well a small full English and it cost £15+ really? £7,50 for a small full English? Shocking.
Review 80:Staff are very friendly, location is good and the place is very clean and tidy.
Review 81:Excellent service and a fantastic stay and the staff were superb warm and friendly. Food lovely. Well organised in every way. The atmosphere was welcoming. We had a lovely clean an fresh room with tv tea amd coffee making facilities. Also a rotating fan in the room. Safety procedures clear. Do again asap!
Review 82:Really friendly helpful staff. Great breakfast. Ideal location for visiting the university.
Review 83:The rooms are so far from reception and it is a long way to carry your suitcases. There are also lots of stairs and door which are difficult to navigate with heavy luggage.
Review 84:Very friendly staff and very helpful about the facilities and buses etc in the area. Food very nice and quick service. Bed excellent and very comfortable and a lovely room - was a bit of a walk along various passages from reception but excellent.
Review 85:The room I was in was just above the smoking area, so a lot of smoke came into that room accompanied by the noise. Also, the corridor wasn't soundproof and I could hear everyone that walked past.
Review 86:In spite of the noise, the staff were lovely and it was less than 2 minutes walk to the university - which was absolutely perfect. Food served there was very nice as well. My room was spotlessly clean when I arrived - and the bed was so comfortable I forgot I wasn't in my own. A good stay, all in all.
Review 87:There was damp on the wall in my room. The room was accessed via a long maze of a corridor with several steps going up and down.
Review 88:It was close to the university.
Review 89:No staff on arrival though quickly found; muscle on past time told (though didn't effect sleep as up late anyway)
Review 90:Food & drink available & check in late as essentially a pub; nice & straight forward stay
Review 91:Long way from Reception to the room up and down various levels with heavy cases (though help with cases was offered in the morning). Double bed too hard and lumpy. Lack of ventilation in room.
Review 92:Wonderful staff - couldn't have been more helpful.
Review 93:No key drop off box - I had to wait for breakfast staff to arrive so I could leave my key before I could depart.
Review 94:Great price, handy location just outside the centre of Hull.
Review 95:Bed was a little small, but that was maybe because we are both quite tall.
Review 96:Very friendly and helpful staff, especially Craig booked a taxi for us to Beverley, answered all our questions, very efficient guy.
Review 97:Was very rudely brushed off by manager several times while asking about the free breakfast offer, then finally told that it would only apply to future stays - stated nowhere on the advertising. Not too great a loss as the breakfast room was full of people looking around for the staff who had all disappeared, with only half the self-service out and no hot breakfast orders taken. Rooms were very hot with windows not opening properly.
Review 98:Pub staff were very nice and a great help during check-in and checkout. Location is great for the university.
Review 99:Hotel reception is part of the bar, so need to walk with bags through a busy bar and restaurant area.
Review 100:Warm welcome, helpful and friendly staff. Room quiet and comfortable with separate en-suite bathroom.
Review 101:No lift and we had to carry heavy cases a long way up and down lots of steps.
Review 102:The manager was brilliant in sorting us out after we had made an error with the booking.
Review 103:Noisy room as it overlooked the tables outside - lots of people smoking out there and making a fair amount of noise. When trying to get served at the bar had to wait till barman had finished his conversation with his friend - however on checkout the general manager could not have been friendlier, so we were just a bit unlucky.
Review 104:Very clean room and very good value for money
Review 105:price of cooked breakfast , way too expensive compared to places nearby, a very very long walk down corridors and up and down stairs to get to our room
Review 106:Every member of staff from the receptionist / bar staff / cleaners / waiting staff / manager were all amazingly helpful, great sense of humour and impeccably turned out Room was very tidy and comfortable, food was amazing (ate there both nights of our stay)
Review 107:WIFI access was poor. After several attempts I gave up and resorted to 3G instead.
Review 108:The staff were friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. The fact that I arrived in the late evening made no difference. The room size was good (I paid for an upgrade) and clean.
Review 109:Great place to stay! Very friendly staff! Made very welcome by Craig the manager! The evening meal was lovely, will most definately be returning soon!!
Review 110:Bathroom very dated. Shower either too hot or too cold. Impossible to adjust. Bath cold tap didn't work. Toilet roll holder had been previously repaired but fell apart on use.
Review 111:Very close to university. Plenty of parking.
Review 112:not a bad experience but as a solo traveller rates are rather expensive especially as I visit every couple of months.
Review 113:The inn is handy for me to visit my family who live within 15 mins walking. Car parking space is useful. Staff are helpful .
Review 114:Big light over mirror in bathroom didn't work and the sink did not hold water because the plug was too small. The cutlery at breakfast was not clean.
Review 115:The staff were very friendly and helpful and the location suited us for our purpose in Hull. For the money, we probably could not have found better.
Review 116:Not a real problem ,but despite the friendly nature of the staff, i did feel that they needed a little bit more professional training.
Review 117:The location was handy as i needed to be in Cottingham and wanted to look up my old haunts, e.g. Newland high school and friends inNorth Hull.
Review 118:Had to ask for a hair dryer( young lady brought one to the room straight away) Toilet would not flush .
Review 119:Staff were helpful and friendly Comfy bed and clean.
Review 120:the breakfast was awful. I asked for scrambled eggs and mushrooms on toast. This was served on a cold plate, the eggs were overcooked and rubbery, no butter on the toast. no fresh fruit, grimly tables. a sad looking breakfast spread
Review 121:it was close the university were I was attending a meeting
Review 122:standing in the bath to shower , no matt , felt uncomfortable getting out with wet feet .
Review 123:honest and helpful staff , late for b/fast , no proplem . no fuss or ceremony , just compatant people on board .
Review 124:There was nothing I didn't like
Review 125:The family room allocated to us consisted of a single room and a double room separated by a connecting door. As I was travelling with my daughter (for a university interview) this gave us the privacy we needed. AS we were going for a university interview the location across the road from the university was perfect.
Review 126:The facilities are a little basic, and the place could do with freshening up in general. A window in room wouldn't close, taking a shower meant partially flooding the bathroom due to a bad shower curtain set-up, and my kettle leaked! Nothing earth shattering, but just a few niggles.
Review 127:The staff are lovely and it is very convenient for the University. Despite being above a pub, it is a quiet place to stay.
Review 128:Decor a bit tired, bathroom fixings hanging off wall, carpets could do with a clean or replacing as they looked worn and tired. Room was quiet and clean, bathroom needed refurb.
Review 129:Bar area was friendly
Review 130:Stayed in rooms at the rear of the building where a new ventilation system has been installed - very noisy throughout the night. Not good for a light sleeper!
Review 131:Good food, beer and friendly staff - very good breakfast too
Review 132:The place needs a refurbishment. Some bleach used in cleaning would make certain areas more appealing.
Review 133:It was in a location that ideal for our stay in Hull.
Review 134:Breackfast was bit pricey if added on with room but glad never did as much to early...
Review 135:Nice bar with nice food easy n plenty parking definatly value for money shower was good n hot bathroom was big bed comfortable had a great stay
Review 136:The consideration of two young men..possibly Uni students ?.. when they gave up their table to allow our family group to all sit down together and enjoy a late drink. Unexpected courtesy from young people is so nice to experience.
Review 137:when i arrived at the hotel i had a headacke, but because it was too hot in the bedroom it developed into a migrane. I do suffer with migranes and because of this i decided to leave and go back home to Grimsby after an hour of arriving. I was not offered an alternative night because of the circumstances only told thankyou and goodbye. The hotel was very nice although the staff needed more trainning in client customer relationships, a simple thankyou and goodbye was not good enough.
Review 138:Everything apart from the way the staff. They had no idea of cutomer/ client relationships and because of this i would not return.
The Fine Print
