Reviews for Best Western PLUS Grim's Dyke Hotel
Review 1:I had a 6am call, which I had not booked. It was my only lie in that week - ruined. I think that I deserved more than a luke warm apology. I had been working very long hours and needed a rest.
Review 2:good room and lots of parking
Review 3:We didn't actually get a room in the main hotel. Instead we was placed in an annex to the building to my surprise! We had only one large towel and one small hand towel for two adults, and was told that there was a shortage of them? Walls were very thin and you could here everything.
Review 4:Nice grounds.
Review 5:The whole thing from the bar to the room was very unclean badly needs a refub Wall paper hanging off Smells of damp Would not recommend Such a stunning building why not spend some money on it and get more guess
Review 6:The look of the hotel and the grounds
Review 7:We did not like being asked to climb the fire escape to our room when we came back from dining out, because the Music Room was in use. The hotel needs to find another solution to this problem.
Review 8:Room upgrade given , lovely room. We have stayed there twice and enjoyed both visits.
Review 9:Walls are thin! We could hear the couple next door enjoying themselves in the early hours! At 5am we were woken by the fire alarm which was apparently caused by someone attempting to smoke in their room! No Wi Fi after 8PM
Review 10:Lovely spacious room & great facilities we were in the garden suite which is a separate building a short walk from the main hotel
Review 11:Found it difficult to park the car because of inconsiderate guests using more than one bay to park their own car.......An employee should be checking car parking........
Review 12:Position of hotel is good
Review 13:animal faeces in one of two rooms booked. staff tried to convince me, animal treats. five animal treats under a bedside cabinet which was pulled out to plug an ipad in. I DONT THINK SO!
Review 14:Nothing to report.
Review 15:The staff of the restaurant were courteous and friendly. The morning and evening meals were truly delicious and were a great way to start and end a day at a fine hotel. The laundry service provided was exceptional.
Review 16:Pillows were horrid, don't like tha shower in the bath, my husband is 82 and found it very difficult, walk in shower please!
Review 17:Beautiful bedroom, very spacious
Review 18:We only stayed in this hotel because it was the closest to our friend's party venue. 1) We ordered room service on our 1st night and the fish and chips was floating in oil, they didn't even bother to drain the oil before putting the food on the plate. It's literally just put on the plate straight from the frying pan. 2) beds are too soft, to be honest with you, Premiere Inn beds and pillows were a lot better. 3) Our 1st room was noisy and had to move the next day...We were tooo tired to move at midnight, having just arrived from abroad. The new room we moved in still had the same extractor fan noise and my husband complained again, we stayed in a country hotel thinking that we can get peace and quiet! The Manager on that day that my husband spoke to has been "BRILLIANT" to actually find out where the noise is coming from & resolved the problem! THANK YOU VERY MUCH, we didn't get his name though....
Review 19:Breakfast was great, French chef, in-charge we were told. Nice garden surrounding & interior, some of the staff were nice, a Chech national, Lithuanian, Jamaican & an English girl (she was on duty in the morning of 31st Oct). The Manager that dealt with our room noise was BRILLIANT...Thank you very much.
Review 20:CAr parking space I have to park far away from my room .the desk lamp was Dusty window blade was broken .
Review 21:The hotel location very quiet like a resort .the viewing was never experience before can see the whole barrow area from the top.I will recommend to anyone to give s try .
Review 22:I wouldn't say bad experience, just that the bar area can become rather noisy and very busy when there is a function going on. Not conducive for a quiet drink.
Review 23:The hotel overall. Nice building and garden.
Review 24:I have downgraded comfort because hotel staff were very noisily banging and crashing about while loading up a truck with table at 6 a.m. in the morning - I was NOT impressed by this - I know it is a wedding venue but it is also a hotel and absolutely no account was taken of the possibility that NOT EVERYONE may want to get up as early as 6 a.m. I think the management should think carefully about whether it actually wants guests to return and a 'QUIET ROOM' choice should be offered when they know full well that they are instructing staff to carry out noisy work very early in the morning right outside the main guest rooms block. The municipal dustbin van also came round very early to noisily empty the rubbish skips.
Review 25:Excellent location - generally quiet and peaceful, with excellent bar service - excellent breakfast - staff very good - but very noisy early in the morning - see comments in 'what I don't like' box. I have already booked to stay again at this hotel for business because overall it is very good and located close enough to my business meeting venue and we are looking forward to the murder mystery night in December but until the 6 am noisy wake-up in the morning occurred I might have rated it excellent overall rather than just very good.
Review 26:I suppose the location is some distance from almost everything, which might be a turn off for some travellers. But I like it.
Review 27:I really like Grim's Dyke - the rooms are very welcoming and clean. There is sufficient car parking and the wooded area in which it is sited is great to walk or run through.
Review 28:Finding the property in the dark after a long flight was tricky but done with a GPS. Having to walk through a seminar room to get to our room and therefore having to use the spiral fire escape when checking out.
Review 29:The property was in a wonderful setting with lovely walks through the gardens and forest. Staff were excellent and helpful.
Review 30:Beautiful hotel, its a magnificent old house surrounded by gardens. Excellent service, the staff was always very helpful and accomodating. Very modern rooms, clean and tidy. We celebrated a small wedding here and everything went perfectly! The food was delicious too.
Review 31:Staff at reception very unwelcoming Room grubby and much in need of redecoration Lighting poor and unable to read in bed Bed mattress lumpy, old and uncomfortable Breakfast very mediocre
Review 32:near my work for the next day
Review 33:This is not value for money. The garden rooms are tired and saw theirbest many many years ago and are now well past their sell by date. Itwas the hardest mattress I have ever had the displeasure to sleep on. Iexpected more from my £165 and still feel very cheated. Will I stayagain? Certainly not. Overall service was good, but the miserable faceon the manager of the receptionists was not necessary first thing in amorning; it costs nothing to smile and be polite especially as we wereoff to go and get married ourselves.
Review 34:Service was great once we realised that there was a rather loud weddingin the main building and we were moved to a garden suite.
Review 35:Rooms not very well cleaned. Needed to ask for clean towels and clean mugs. Had to ask for light to be fixed. Property is nice but service is poor.
Review 36:Beds were comfortable
Review 37:The location was great. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, it was so pieceful. The rooms were smallish but clean and had great facilities. Would definatly stay here again.
Review 38:Basically everything, 2nd time we have stopped there and can't fault staff, accommodation or breakfast. Will definitely be back again as such a good, quiet location for daily trips into London.
Review 39:I stayed in the annex. It's old and tired. The bed was ok but not super comfortable. Everything needs a good update and clean. It was ok for my needs for one night.
Review 40:Good value for money. Great having free water in the rooms and a good range of toiletries.
Review 41:I think the Garden Rooms were a little tired and could do with a freshen-up. Would prefer to be in the main building
Review 42:The grounds and the main Hotel building were lovely
Review 43:n/a
Review 44:We regularly go back as this hotel is just brilliant such a tranquil place to be if you just want to get away. The reception staff are brilliant as always and nothing is too much trouble. rooms are great value and sooooo comfortable
Review 45:Nothing of note
Review 46:Love this hotel. Staff are friendly facilities are fine. I like the location in a wood - I run through it a few days per week. Not far from town.
Review 47:Everywhere needs a good clean a some tlc. Staff very lukewarm and not at all attentive. This was my third stay due to family commitments and I really do not feel it is value for money. Breakfast was a plate of grease and fat, had to ask for orange juice as it had run out, waiter said it was already there, it wasn't! No apology just a grimace of disinterest. Sheets were crumpled and had hairs on them on the inside sheet, too tired to ask for them to change it. Showere fine for up to 5'5 but at 5"9 and 6'3 we had to squat down to get under the shower head! No air con in this room and as it was ground floor felt uneasy about leaving the windows open at night. No water left in our room fortunately we had our own. Smiled at several staff members and felt like an alien just landed by their response. Would only stay again out of necessity. Such a shame as the building and grounds are beautiful. Best Western get it sorted!M
Review 48:It was close to the people I was visiting.
Review 49:Broken toilet resulted in having to pack up and move to another room. The second room did not have air conditioning or a fridge. Both rooms were tired looking, rather like a nursing home.
Review 50:Garden
Review 51:We were in garden room ( modern building on grounds). Shame bedroom was not in main historic house and we did not know until we arrived. Upgrade was too expensive.
Review 52:Beautiful house and stunning gardens
Review 53:Stayed in the Grand Duke Suite. It was a lovely room but things look a little tired. Carpet stained, bedding frayed, furniture mismatched, dripping tap. Great size for a family though. Glad brought own air bed rather than paying £25 per night for a fold up!
Review 54:The staff were lovely, so hard working & eager to help.
Review 55:Had to clamber up fire escape to get to our room on arrival as function in Music Room.
Review 56:One hour from Heathrow. Lovely old hotel and grounds. Large room and excellent restaurant.
Review 57:My last stay in the Goodall suite cost £118, which doesn't include breakfast, plus a further £10 to extend checkout by one hour to 12 rather than 11am. I think that breaky should be included in the cost and that the standard checkout time should be 12.
Review 58:The location is absolutely stunning, offering gorgeous views of the gardens from any of the suites in the main building. It is extremely quiet, which makes it ideal for a bit of R&R. The Suites I have previously stayed in (Gilbert, Sullivan and Goodall) are all very special, especially Sullivan, which being the bridal suite is by far and away the largest. I have eaten their cooked breakfast many times and it never disappoints. I've also had dinner in the restaurant and all three courses were delicious. I will most definitely be returning in the future.
Review 59:No over friendly at reception as we arrived bang on 3 pm but said no hurry with getting the room ready to convert into two singles as I did not want to sleep with my brother . I had reserved a twin room with single beds .
Review 60:Great surrounding and grounds
Review 61:Not a complaint, butwould have preferred a softer pillow.
Review 62:Stayed here to attend family wedding. Beautiful main building and gardens. Staff were all exceptional. .
Review 63:Absolutely fabulous. The staff could not have been more helpful. The room was very clean and had all the facilities I could have hoped for. Nothing was too much trouble
Review 64:I had to ask for more towels upon arrival, was not given any wascloths. The ac had not been checked before our arrival and was not working. After it was "fixed" could not get the temp lower to cool the room more than what the unit was set for. They did provide a fan for us. Breakfast was high priced for what you received, the staff stated it was a10 minute walk to the train, when it is really 30 minutes or more, but highly suggeted taking a taxi to the train.
Review 65:The bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean.
Review 66:There was difficulty booking the room directly through the hotel even though there were rooms requested hence why I booked through booking.com. The staff were rude. Only 1 towel in the bathroom. Whilst we were clearly part of the wedding group the manager refused to conceed we had been charged more for a substandard room due to his staff's error & charged us for breakfast when we complained, even though other members of our party didn't use theirs.
Review 67:Shame that for £93 breakfast was not included.
Review 68:Good location, would go back if attending any further events at Wembley Stadium and taxi good value £14 there £20 back.
Review 69:- At breakfast, refill of the buffet could have been faster. Had to wait for ham/cheese or croissants quite long. But the breakfast was very good in general - that I couldn't spend more time there
Review 70:- look & style of the property - surrounded by beutiful gardens/park - friendly and helpful staff - very reasonable price compared to other options I had
Review 71:No air-conditioning in the room in summer or extraction fan in bathroom.
Review 72:I loved the the garden terraced tooms, especially as they had just been renovated 3 weeks before we arrived. Very comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. And free wifi.
Review 73:The badly designed rooms in the new wing. It had a completely inaccessible safe and a TV which one could not watch from the bed. I have a low sports car and the potholes in the long drive were tedious. The hotel is still holding my £50 deposit, despite having been asked to release it!
Review 74:The staff and the breakfast.
Review 75:Having to share a bath towel. The small bedroom with limited storage. The absence of any convenient lounge or bar.
Review 76:The staff were always pleasant and attentive
Review 77:The bedside lamp in 212 was faulty and shorted.
Review 78:I only stayed because I had a hospital appointment the next day BUT it was so good that I will soon return for a short holiday there. The pretty dark receptionist wass superb and the tall fair manager was really friendly. Superb grounds.
Review 79:Unfriendly check-in lady. The only hotel receptions in uk that seems tothink it is ok to demand passports when we check in!.
Review 80:Room staff very good and perfectly clean rooms. Bar staff alsoexceptional
Review 81:No one answered the reception telephone when I rang it a few times to enquire about something.
Review 82:The room was clean and quite big and very reasonably priced. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
Review 83:Location of most of the bedrooms is a 75yd walk away from the main hotel, which was a bit weird and made us feel like we were staying in army barracks rather than a 4* hotel. Although there are a few rooms in the main hotel, just about everyone seemed to be accommodated in the block. Also, the reception staff, although efficient, were not very friendly or welcoming.
Review 84:Hotel location and beautiful hotel gardens. The staff in the main restaurant were delightful. The breakfasts were very good.
Review 85:I phoned several days before our arrival to enquire about breakfast and to express an intention that I would settle the breakfast account for the group. I was asked to confirm this with reception on arrival. I re-stated the content of the phone call to the receptionist on arrival. As my colleagues arrived, they reported that they had been charged for their own breakfast when checking in, despite two conversations summarised above. There was also a confusion about breakfast times. As a result, some of my colleagues had no breakfast at all; others had room service. This really took the gloss off everything else that was so good about our stay. Having used this hotel previously, I was very surprised by the way this issue was handled.
Review 86:Ambiance. Room and facilities. Restaurant.
Review 87:We booked 7 months in advance and as we were going to a wedding locally at 3pm, we asked if it were possible to get in our room at 1pm. Although not promised, we were assured this would be possible. However when we arrived at 1pm our room was not ready. Not only that but the receptionist could not give us an estimated time as to when we could get in. She asked us to wait in reception and if the room weren't ready by 2pm, she could offer us a cloakroom in which to change. Fortunately, at 2pm the room was ready so we asked if we could ring for a taxi to pick us up at 2.30. Reception said they would ring a local cab company and call our room when it arrived. At 2.30 we were ready, so we waited in reception/lobby. When no cab arrived we checked at the desk and it was clear that no cab had been ordered. The cab finally arrived at 3.05 and we were 20 minutes late for the wedding..We thought the attitude of one member of staff in particular was very off hand. .
Review 88:We loved the grounds, the room, the beds and the breakfast..
Review 89:eating arrangements did not suit us restaurant did not open until 7pm by the time meal arrived 8pm too late for us so only bar snacks & then no hot food until 6pm (soup) cater for older guests please
Review 90:staff & room very good gardens & grounds excellent
Review 91:Location. Great for a peaceful weekend but not too far by car/taxi to livelier places. Staff could not be more helpful. Although hotel décor is a little tired in places would definitely stay again. We were in the annex. Only noise was the dawn chorus. Bliss.
Review 92:Rooms were nice and modern though with the summer weather was very uncomfortable to sleep as there was no air and a fan didn't help this problem, aircon maybe a thought?
Review 93:The hotel and surroundings were beautiful, it was a nice summers day so it was especially better sitting in the gardens with a beverage. Staff were very helpful and the food was delicious.
Review 94:A couple of blankets were requested in place of the overly heavy duvet. An additional, identical duvet was delivered.
Review 95:The restaurant was good and very reasonably priced.
Review 96:Nothing at all! It was all lovely.
Review 97:We stayed overnight for our trip to see the sites in london. when we first arrived we were well impressed with the hotel and grounds. It is all very clean and the gardens are kept beautifully. Our room was in the garden lodge and although these rooms are more modern than in the main house our room was lovely and clean. Staff were also friendly. We will be staying again, hopefully for longer next time. We felt very relaxed during our stay.
Review 98:Unfortunately the mattress was quite uncomfortable and we didn't sleep very well on it. Despite this it was still well worth what we paid for it.
Review 99:This is a beautiful hotel on fabulous grounds. Well situated and easy to find with plenty of local amenities. The room was great for the money we paid, even had a little fridge in it to keep our milk cold!
Review 100:booking printout from booking.com said full english breakfast £9.50 but I was charged £13.85x2 Didn't like being double booked by an unclear booking in form and then told you are charged in advance with no refund.although after making a phone call the mistake was resolved.
Review 101:lovely grounds, nice restaurant and lovely library bar. Good choice of food on the menu, reasonably priced and well presented.
Review 102:Very well appointed. Close to Stanmore underground station so easy access to London but it's like being in the countryside. Very relaxing after a busy day sightseeing.
Review 103:One or two "tired" elements to the Garden Lodge rooms although everything functioned well. Full English Breakfast was good, but the Continental table was rather thin on content. Needs to be topped up more regularly. Reception area rather bland and pokey. Doesn't create a good impression.
Review 104:A delightful building and grounds. Friendly and efficient staff. Comfortable, clean rooms that were well equipped although the bathroom, which functioned perfectly, will soon be in need of a refit. Good value for the advanced booking rate.
Review 105:Staff weren't happy and weren't very helpful when we asked requests, also seems to have a small ant problem in the bathroom.
Review 106:Room, location, Bath, cleanliness, gardens
Review 107:Why do most hotels have high tog duvets regardless of the season & weather? Would be nice to have a choice instead of having to take the duvet out of the cover because it's like sleeping in an oven!
Review 108:We stayed for 2 nights. On the first night we had a very unsettled night due to a poor mattress. The next morning, with no demur, the receptionist relocated us to a newly refurbished room which had a new bed. This was done with very quickly, efficiently & politely. All the staff we met were extremely helpful. Top marks!
Review 109:Shower control knob covers missing so very hard to grip and turn off and change temperature. Chairs in room stained (Garden room 107.or was it 207?) Attitude of staff 'we would never allocate a main house room at the price you paid! (£65)' If the rooms are empty ..knock yourself out and give us a treat! We may reciprocate by opting to pay a bit more next time for a main house room!
Review 110:Great Location. Lovely gardens and main house. Comfy Bed. real coffee in room.
Review 111:Would have liked the Wi-Fi to be a stronger signal in the room.
Review 112:Very helpful and efficient staff in the restaurant (even though they were very busy). Good choice for breakfast and evening meal. Beautiful gardens with surrounding woodland.
Review 113:Nothing to complain about. It's a shame we didn't have longer to explore the hotel and surrounds.
Review 114:The hotel was set in lovely grounds. The hotel is in a separate building from the historic pub, although they are very close together. Room was a decent size with a sofa and writing desk. It also had tea/coffee making facilities plus a bar fridge. Free wifi worked well. Free parking. No problems at all.
Review 115:No bad experiences!
Review 116:All the staff were very helpful and courteous - something that is quite rare in this day and age - and very welcoming. The service and ambience of the hotel was discreetly very efficient.
Review 117:Room was a bit dull even with all lights on it was still very dull, Could be so much more inviting especially with the garden view. Sofa in room faded and stained nad pillws very warn on corners. Bed pillows very, very hard.
Review 118:Resteraunt staff and food excelent, great location.
Review 119:You need to consider facilities when there is a wedding. There was lack of bar service and no lounge facilities available. Breakfast was a nightmare; queuing for a table then waiting ages for service. Good job we didn't have to book out at 11.00 that day. As a ordinary guest it felt a bit like you didn't count for much. We were relieved there was no wedding the second day.
Review 120:Relaxing and comfortable stay with lovely surroundings to enjoy and helpful staff.
Review 121:Our room was not in the nice hotel in all the pictures but a much newer (30 years ish) travelodge esk block. Nothing wrong with it per say but no way near as much character as the pictures would have you believe
Review 122:Gardens a bit muddy! Some problems getting onto wi-fi but prob because in a wooded area.
Review 123:Thought this hotel and gardens looked very good on the internet. We were not disappointed. Gardens will be even better in a couple of months when in full bloom. Went for 80th Birthday celebration and the individual was thrilled with the place.
Review 124:The fan in the bathroom didn't work and the .overhead cleaning hadn't been done for a while . Food and drink was quite expensive.
Review 125:Excellent bed and clean sheets. Very friendly and helpful staff who couldn't have been more helpful as we arrived early and wanted to book in so they cleaned our room 1st to enable us to have a rest before going to a function. Good parking right outside the block where our room was situated.
Review 126:We wanted room service at 4pm and was advised there was no hot food. However I would assume the restaurant was open.
Review 127:Grounds are beautiful. Bed was super comfy. Garden view was fantastic. Good standard of coffee.
Review 128:Needs more comfortable beds, friendlier reception staff, small business computer to checkin for airlines. Ran out of toilet paper. Heating system wonky in room and pillows very flat and not comfortable.
Review 129:Excellent, unparalleled location. Lovely breakfast. Very sweet library location and tea service.
Review 130:No heating on for the 1st night, patchy wi-fi, food took a long time be served - and this off the set menu......
Review 131:Modern, spacious room, lovely grounds, helpful staff, decent restaurant available
Review 132:Location was lovely, very quiet room, enjoyed the food and a few drinks! Had a walk through the woods, didn't think we were in London. Will look forward to our next visit..
Review 133:Not having a covered walkway from the lodge rooms to the original hotel is unfortunate in bad weather but having no direct access between the bar and the dining room without going outside is very strange
Review 134:Well appointed and good sized room Tranquil feel due to spacious and attractive grounds
Review 135:This hotel is potentially a five star hotel. In reality a 2 star venue. The interior is old and smelly and very dirty. To understand what it could be like visit Bodysgallen Hall in Llandudno.
Review 136:Location and grounds
Review 137:Leaving to go home !
Review 138:Everything Room most comfortable with many thoughtful extra touches, magazines, choice of teas, etc. Bathroom superclean ! Staff helpful. Later than average checkout time. The peace and beauty of the surroundings and the informative brochure in room with history of the house, etc. Most of all the price we paid for this truly enjoyable experience.
Review 139:WiFi didn't work. There was a bit too much smoke smell in the corridor outside the room.
Review 140:It was just a very different place - really enjoyed the difference from the usual corporate-style places for a change.
