Reviews for Crown & Mitre

Review 1:single rooms quite cramped escpecially the bath rooms. venitian blind up at the windows with no curtains allowed the very cold to travel through the windows, and the room was very light during the hours of darkness. Parking was an absolute nightmare in their car park with vehicles being blocked in due to late arrivals . contractors who had to leave early for work had many problems trying to vacate the car park.

Review 2:good helpful friendly staff. very nice building

Review 3:I requested a deluxe room, the room I occupied was far from deluxe! Putting robes in a petite standard room does not make it deluxe! Very disappointin as Ibe used this hotel regularly on business trips.

Review 4:This was our Christmas stay, my husband myself and my 85 year old father in law. The first night 24th December had one hour sleep due to noise outside from the refridgetion unit. They moved us but we were not near our father. We were given A bottle of house wine.... didn't help...

Review 5:The staff were friendly, the food was ok

Review 6:I've stayed in most hotels in Carlisle but the Crown & Mitre was by far the best, the staff were very friendly & the atmosphere very relaxed.

Review 7:Very nice place , staff were very curtious , polite and profesional at all times , great location to shops etc and secure private parking I will be staying again

Review 8:The staff overall, especially the cleaners knocking on our door every 30mins from 9am till 10.30am. It really ruined our stay

Review 9:Loved the location and drinks on arrival. The deluxe room was comfortable

Review 10:I travel in a van for work, and the car park when full can be a bit tight for space, but in fairness the staff always seem to get something sorted.

Review 11:Lovely hotel with plenty of character and history. Great value for money and brilliant standard of service. Excellent location to explore Carlisle.

Review 12:Car parking was difficult at times, not a lot that could be done due to the limited space

Review 13:Every member of staff that dealt with us was friendly yet professional. They gave the impression that they were genuinely pleased that we were staying at the Crown and Mitre

Review 14:Reservations: brown everywhere! Dinner was well-cooked but Italian food should be served with bread and not with boiled vegetables (Italians don't even have a word for Brussels sprouts)

Review 15:Perfectly satisfactory.

Review 16:Needs updating all though comfy says wifi available throughout don't count on it unable to get any signal in the room we stayed in

Review 17:The staff and location are excellent can not ask for more.

Review 18:Hmmmm, well firstly the hotel is very tired. Carpet taped down in places, wallpaper peeling off the walls, not the cleanest of hotels (cigarette butts on the staircase- not good) but perhaps this is because the hotel is in need of a redecoration. Secondly, the car park. It says on the website that there is a hotel car park but what it doesn't say is that it's highly unlikely you'll get a space because it is crammed full with staff cars. (We could see who was coming and going from our bedroom window). We ended up paying £10 for a public car park. Not the end of the world but not what we were expecting. Thirdly, the swimming pool. Not much bigger than my bath tub, once four people were in it was full. And the jacuzzi wasn't working! Fourthly, the noise at night. Admittedly it was the 19th of December so midst of party season, but the noise we heard all night was not from party goers but staff, smoking in the courtyard. It didn't keep me awake all night because I was so tired but it did my husband. My children heard it too. Fifthly, the breakfast. Lots of variety but the cooked breakfast looks like a cholesterol hazard. The eggs, bacon and sausages were swimming in oil. We all like a bit of grease with our greasy spoon but this was a stretch too far. Would I return again? No thank you.

Review 19:The beds were comfortable and it was pet friendly. Also it was right in the centre of town with access to plenty of restaurants and the castle and the cathedral. Nice walks for us and our dog.

Review 20:The swimming pool was amazing and never busy. Staff were amazing and always helped you out with anything. Car parking was organised very well by the staff with limited space.

Review 21:Our party of six were impressed with the breakfast so we decided to book for lunch. We all choose the Sunday lunch but felt let down and disappointed as it was cold.

Review 22:Breakfast excellent with fresh food replenshised quickly.

Review 23:Advertise car park available but when I arrived at 7:30pm to be told there is no space in the car park Nearest car park was 3 mins walk in the rain. Room was not clean.......net curtains had disgusting black line on the bottom. I don't think they had been washed in years!

Review 24:Not a lot.

Review 25:Trying to find the car park & the limited spaces, but the staff were very helpful moving car's so we got a space

Review 26:We had a fantastic meal in the restaurant & the two young waitresses were two of the nicest girls couldn't have done enough for us

Review 27:Nothing other than the weather.

Review 28:Love the position of this Hotel. Out the front door and your in the walking precinct. Lovely big room with a massive bed, looking over the precinct. We will be back at some point. At the moment you have to take the diversion coming of the A7 M6 roundabout. Head for Workington then signposted for city centre and Hospital.

Review 29:See above

Review 30:Dirty, 4 flies in bathroom. Tape on the stairs. Couldn't find your car park. Terrible old tired decor, uncomfortable single bed. Overall poor

Review 31:This hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment with carpets being held down with duct tape. Also the food was not great. Upon arrival, I had to ask to move rooms due to the radiator making a trickling sound. I was first told there was no more room but then moved to the room next door to the first one.

Review 32:The Location was perfect.

Review 33:Awful old fashioned and dated decor in room, ripped carpet, aged bathroom, floral headboard, sink is in bedroom and not bathroom.

Review 34:Great city centre location and brilliant breakfast.

Review 35:Seemed a little tired in room decor.

Review 36:Excellent location centre of Carlisle. Nice little pool sauna. Decent breakfast, although crowded room. Hotels restaurant (peace and plenty) was incredible.

Review 37:The room was far too hot even with the window wide open (in December) The radiator wouldn't turn down. The shower curtain blows in because of the extractor fan so that it sticks to your body when taking a shower and you end up trying to squash into about 10" of space up against the wall.

Review 38:It was very convenient. The staff were pleasant and the room was clean although the bathroom would benefit from redecoration.

Review 39:The close proximity of the hotel to the location where I had business. The city centre location is good for accessibility to shops and cafes. The staff are always welcoming and helpful.

Review 40:On arrival the room was uncomfortably hot, unfortunately it remained hot through the night despite turning the radiator off and leaving the windows open. Additionally there were hairs on the bottom bed sheet and attention hadn't been spent to cleanliness such as under the taps and plugs were filthy. The carpets looked stained in the corridors and the hotel although having lovely features was just a little tired and requires updating.

Review 41:Was perfectly situated for graduation ceremony.

Review 42:We had to change rooms as our first room was freezing cold & damp. The hotel is old but is in need of a major overhaul. Think faulty towers & that would be a good description.

Review 43:Location was good for my husbands graduation beside the cathedral.

Review 44:Heating in hotel not good with many areas including bedrooms & bar were cold. Smaller double rooms very small, more akin to a "B&B" experience

Review 45:Hotel Staff extremely friendly & helpful. Location superb.

Review 46:Not at all easy to find the car park, sat nav takes you to pedestrian precinct.

Review 47:Brilliant and plentiful breakfast. room whilst dated was comfortable and clean.

Review 48:Carpets a little worn. Bathroom rather cold. Small car park.

Review 49:The hotel is based in a very central location just minutes from the railway station. Car park is secure, locked at all times. Breakfast staff very attentive

Review 50:Unfortunately my sister tripped and fell out of the bath slightly injuring her foot and bruising to her side. Zoe the manager took all the particulars about the event and was very helpful.

Review 51:The situation of the hotel is excellent. The staff were very helpful.

Review 52:- needs to be updated to recent standards in terms of window isolation and heating systems. - in the room I stood, the heather was not really heating the room, which is no convenient in cold and windy days.

Review 53:i general is very nice!

Review 54:although bedroom was clean the mattress was in an awful condition ie springs were surfacing we were not told our car would be blocked in and when we discovered this we had no time to wait and had to take a taxi to and from an appointment no dvd player in room as advertised

Review 55:hotel centrally located

Review 56:the only fault we had was the bed the mattress sunk into the base of the bed on one side so I would replace the base. the room looked very clean, but as you look closer it could do with a deep clean as you could see quite a lot of thick dust.

Review 57:we have stayed before for our anniversary we decided to downgrade our room this time , I was very happy with the quality of the room . well worth the money

Review 58:small double bed, maintenance issues throughout the hotel, carpets, wallpaper, stair edges

Review 59:free wifi, nice bath, parking, location to city centre, good staff

Review 60:Quality of the food at breakfast wasnt the best and although once grand the building is looking tired with threadbare carpets!

Review 61:Superb location. 5 mins from rail station and right in the heart of town.

Review 62:Room 312 had huge cobweb hanging above dressing table - Bathroom was very dated and the louvre door was very shabby (who has a louvre door on a bathroom?) - toothpaste on the tiles, toilet flush button is very stiff, floor could do with a deep clean (esp in the corners) - Sink needs looking at, water takes ages to disperse -

Review 63:Reception area very welcoming, Bar Staff (Courtney & Jamie) very polite and courteous. Location excellent. Bathrobes and slippers in room. Bed is extremely comfortable

Review 64:> Room was extreme small > Beds were torn. We put air matresses on the bed because the metal springs were coming through. > The carpet was not vaccuumed - we had glitter on the floor. The bathroom was not cleaned. We had hairs and soap wrapping in the shower when we arrived. The beds were also quite dirty and with hairs in them. So the room was completely dirty.

Review 65:> Absolute in the middle of the town but we still had a quite room. > Very helpful and nice staff on arrival (though it was hard to check-in since we waited a couple of minutes in the night until someone heard the ringing bell.

Review 66:Although sheets and towels couldn't be faulted the chairs in the room and the headboard were too filthy to sit in or lean against. I appreciate our room in the annexe was tired and in need of refurbishment but I cannot see how the chairs and headboard could not have been replaced with clean ones. I accepted £10 off the room rate when I was checking out as I would have had to have written in to the manager to receive a larger discount.

Review 67:Location

Review 68:Maid coming in to clean room at 9am when away on a relaxing break. Being in outer part of hotel.

Review 69:Clean and comfortable hotel in centre of town. Rooms spacious.

Review 70:Well, the pool is a bit small, and a sauna wouldn't go amiss - but I guess it would be a major refurb and wind up being a more expensive stay!

Review 71:I love these old town centre hotels. Also Roy - seems a sensible, easy going man who helped us with our bikes! Breakfast excellent!

Review 72:This hotel is a brilliant place to stay and relax in comfort. Food is excellent in the restaurant and the rooms are very comfy. The leisure facilities are a perfect way to unwind.

Review 73:Regular room not large but fine for one person for a short stay. No view.

Review 74:Location was great--hotel is on the main shopping street in Carlisle with restaurants close by so no car needed, it is a five minute walk from the train station. Around the corner from Carlisle Cathedral. Room was clean w/ good quality sheets and towels. Would stay here again

Review 75:Car park was full so we had to pay to park nearby although at £3 per night this was quite reasonable. Staff on reception could be more welcoming.

Review 76:Great location. Close to Sands Centre. Good breakfast.

Review 77:We were in a front room and the noise from the square late at night and early morning disturbed our sleep.

Review 78:Friendly staff. Lovely hotel in its day but needs sprucing up.

Review 79:I did not like the bathroom. having a shower curtain makes the area very small to bath in, also it blows against you while showering. more than 2 teabags in the room would have been nice.

Review 80:excellent location.

Review 81:the water ran very slow from the taps and toilet struggled to flush. The view was terrible, but it's not really their fault as they are in the middle of town.

Review 82:City centre location, a secure car park, very nice and helpful on the reception, nice shower which was easy to use, lovely temperature, checkout time of 12 so no rush needed!

Review 83:The rooms are tired - I paid for a king room which wasn't worth the money (although we were told we'd been upgraded to one when we got there which wasn't the case) - the room was small, especially considering the size of the bed. There was a dipped floor board in the room by the desk that I nearly fell in a couple of times. The door to the bathroom was a shuttered closet door which meant you couldn't go to the toilet without odours spreading through the room. The breakfast was pretty average.

Review 84:The hotel is a beautiful building. The swimming pool facilities looked lovely but we didn't need to use them. The staff are really friendly and helpful (so we didn't have the heart to moan about the room.)

Review 85:The bathroom could have been cleaner overall the room was comfortable. Parking was a nightmare could not come out easily.

Review 86:Staff hospitality was excellent, forgot to ask the name of the male staff who welcomed me. He was very professional and his hospitality was excellent.

Review 87:The small car park and the procedure for getting into and out of it. Also the polite response to our request for a slightly earlier check in on just one of the rooms to change of clothes and drop off luggage was that the rooms may not be available. An offer of somewhere to change was made but on arrival we reached our check-in time before we reached the end of the check-in queue (and leaving luggage in hotel reception areas is too insecure for my taste).

Review 88:Clean, pleasant room. Good breakfast.

Review 89:Price paid not value for money. Paid for luxury room put in inferior annex room. TV control not working. Main Breakfast restaurant with Buffet turfed out of there into inferior Breakfast restaurant. Would never stay at this Hotel again

Review 90:nothing

Review 91:Shabby and dull décor internally. Room allocated very small and dark, very hot in room and radiator control not working. Got locked in bathroom as door knob ineffective. Moved to better room fronting street but woken daily at 6am by noise of street cleaning truck moving up and down square. Breakfast dreadful and expensive at £8.50; by 8am food on hotplate overcooked, fruit juice watered down, served burnt black toast and butter in packets not acceptable for a quality hotel. Staff generally disinterested and unmotivated.

Review 92:Central location

Review 93:Central location, with car parking. This meant that my hire car was safe whilst I met various friends but I had the convenience of a car to see people throughout Cumbria.

Review 94:Asked for more bottles of water but request was ignored Room overlooked shopping square so noise woke us up early each morning Double glazing could alleviate this problem

Review 95:Room was a good size Bathroom was modern

Review 96:The place looks rather like it is past its glory days but it has all the facilities you need.

Review 97:Great location with a nice view over the main square, close to the train station.

Review 98:we were in the annex where rooms are nice but small...and you could not control the heating...which was a tadge too hot for us

Review 99:excellent location...nice facilities

Review 100:Everything and staff were correct in a business and friendly way. Bedroom small but adequate for the one night stopover. For a little longer we would upgrade to a larger room. Breakfast was very good and well presented. Location of hotel first class.

Review 101:cold scrambled egg 1st morning, burnt toast on the second morning. On Sunday evening I had a bar meal ,I had sticky toffee pudding which I have eaten at may places but it also goes with custard, cream or ice cream, non of these options were there and most of the pudding went back as it was too dry to eat with just a small amount of toffee sauce.the catering definitely wants reviewing

Review 102:location is ideal for shops and buses which saves you using your car

Review 103:A few toiletry problems which wasn't dealt with very well but on the whole a pleasant stay

Review 104:The location of this hotel is very good. Near castle and Cathedral

Review 105:It was genuinely the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in, very lumpy. The walls are also paper thin; I felt like I was in a dorm.

Review 106:The staff were lovely and the food was good. The price was also low.

Review 107:There were parts of the hotel which could do with up dating such as the carpet in the reception area as it looked worn.

Review 108:Location to the centre of Carlisle. The hotel has very good service particularly at breakfast when it was busy.

Review 109:The staff were polite, but seemed to be going through the motions. The lighting in the room was very poor - there was a lamp and a light above my bed. However, there was no light in the passageway (between the door & bedroom) and bedroom. It was rather chilly when I arrived and yet the heating wasn't on. The bathroom was very small and the door and when the door was open, it covered the basin - I had to close the door to do my make up. The shower also leaked on the bathroom floor, even though I closed the curtain on the inside of the bath as instructed. The room appeared fairly clean, but there were a lot of stains. There were stains on the bed cover, on the step to the window, the carpets were old, the bathroom looked old and the shower curtain was brown at the bottom. Even if the room was clean, it had so many stains and looked very old, which made it appear rather dirty. Breakfast was a buffet. The scrambled eggs looked cold, so I opted for the continental breakfast. However, this wasn't fresh either. The fruit was tinned fruit and there was a poor selection of meat and cheese. I have had better breakfasts which I have paid less for. I would have appreciated my eggs being cooked at my request and a better selection of cold meats and cheese. The coffee wasn't hot and not very flavoursome. This hotel has a lot of potential but seems in desperate need of updating!

Review 110:The location was very central and convenient.

Review 111:First night the beds were awful - saggy mattresses with springs that hurt your back. My wife ended up with bad backache for the rest of our holiday. We complained and were moved to better room but with only a vague apology and no compensation. I expected better for £95 a night!

Review 112:Pleasant staff and good catering

Review 113:the bed was very uncomfortable the shower would not turn off properly i had booked a double for single occupancy and the first room given was a single

Review 114:friendly staff great location previously stayed in the annexe and its much better great car park lovely porter and very helpful glass of wine on arrival complimentary

Review 115:It took a very long time to get parked as a member of staff had to come out and open the gate. On the plus side, this means that the car park is secure! View from room was not good.

Review 116:This hotel was lovely. A gorgeous building with extremely comfortable beds and lovely staff. I even got a free glass of wine upon check in!

Review 117:Nothing

Review 118:Great location in the center of town, and the staff were really friendly and helpful, especially at breakfast, which is the only time we ate there.

Review 119:Room and bed very small for amount of money paid. Bathroom very old and therefore seemed dirty. Swimming pool area also a major let down as that is why I had booked. Expected so much more on entering the hotel

Review 120:Location fantastic, public areas of the hotel very grand and luxurious. Breakfast was nice

Review 121:Bedroom decor.

Review 122:2 separate stays at same price. First stay very disappointing re: room and yet second stay room and bathroom much bigger, better equipped and higher standard. Some discrepancy there. Pool was lovely as were helpful staff and grand architecture of lobby and entrance. Loved the old lift!

Review 123:Have stayed in the annex on both our recent visits and unfortunately it was very noisy late into the night 3:30 am inside and outside the accommodation. Will concede it was the weekend and there was a wedding on our latest visit The car parking is not guaranteed." Leisure facilities" could be improved upon.

Review 124:The location is excellent

Review 125:Needs major updating in the rooms. We were in a small room on the 4th floor and had no control over the temperature in the room. Too hot, unless you kept the window opened constantly. Difficult on Saturday night with a wedding band playing until midnight. Shower head had poor pressure and then it quit altogether in the middle of the 2nd person having a shower.

Review 126:Nice central location so it is easy to walk around the downtown. Good breakfast selection.

Review 127:WIth the exception of a young man on reception, the staff require training. The rooms are very tired and for the price a complete rip off - one of the rooms had to be changed. Walls were paper thin, I could hear people on the toilet/in shower in the next room. not in the least bit relaxing. Finally on checking in I had pre-paid money for each night of the stay in case I wanted room service etc. It became a complete hassle getting the money refunded - they attempted to short change me by around £40. even when I pointed out they were clearly incorrect and why, I still had to waste 10 minutes arguing the point at which point the lady behind the counter acted like she had done me a favour. She hadn't - I had pre-paid £60 in total and spent £12.50 leaving a balance of £47.50 due be refunded - their records said £7.50 due!

Review 128:Location and leaving.

Review 129:there wasn't anything I didn't like

Review 130:loved how close it was to everything from pubs to shops to places for entertainment. have had bigger rooms in the past but its a place to stay for one night and is more than acceptable for the price and where its situated in the city. also the choice for things like papers at your door in the morning, washing etc. brilliant. best bit was the late check out, never had that in any of the hotels I've stayed at.

Review 131:Not such a good view from the back of the hotel where my room was. Car park very crammed and I could only just get out of my car.

Review 132:Quiet, comfy and very helpful staff. Chap came out and helped me with my bags and checked me in straight away even though a large tour party was also booking in.

Review 133:The window in the room didn't open, the heaters come on automatically at night and the room was so stuffy we ended up opening the hall door and leaving it ajar all night - although still way to stuffy to get any decent sleep - no air ventilation at all.

Review 134:Even though it was Sunday they did some washing for us which I really appreciated.

Review 135:The reception staff weren't overly friendly, we were made to wait behind one other customer although there were two working on the desk. After travelling for eight hours we were refused check in as we arrived less than an hour before the check in time. there was a noise problem with pigeons. The cooked breakfast was tasteless

Review 136:the location was ideally situated in the city centre. The bed was very comfortable

Review 137:Address: extremely difficult to locate located on a pedestrianised area. It would be extremely helpful if the address of their gate entry (Parking) would be menmtioned as well.

Review 138:Hotel is looking a little tired and in need of refurbishment in the bedroom area, stairs, corridors and dining area

Review 139:A beautiful hotel and ideal location. Friendly staff and nice touches

Review 140:Friendly easygoing staff Place a little dated, but this was part of it's charm First class location able to step straight into the city centre from the main entrence

The Fine Print
