Reviews for Royal Glen Hotel

Review 1:The dinner menu was limited, and although we dined relatively early, two of the choices (the ones we would have preferred) had already become unavailable.

Review 2:A charming old hotel in a quiet location close to the sea front and town centre.

Review 3:nothing we could find fault with

Review 4:the setting the rooms the ambiance the people the restaurenat /bar staff and cleaners were particularly friendly and polite very professional

Review 5:Our double bed was two singles pushed together which is very uncomfortable to sleep on. Room was very hot and we were reluctant to open our windows at first as there were noisy guests smoking on a bench right outside our room (room 12). They were there until past 11:30pm which kept us awake. All in all, for a bad nights sleep on an uncomfortable bed in a very out-dated room, it was not very good value for money.

Review 6:Breakfast was good, with quick and friendly service. Swimming pool is a nice extra. Room was clean and the staff were welcoming and helpful-especially as we accidently left clothes in our room after check-out and came back for them later with no issues from the hotel.

Review 7:The wifi didn't work, the room was not really a family size room so we were slightly squashed with four of us, the bed and pillows were hard.

Review 8:Location was very good

Review 9:The mattresses are good but relatively hard; we would have liked softer beds, but this is down to personal preference. The internet connection is very slow but it seemed to be the same all over the village.

Review 10:A quiet but convenient location a short walk from the town centre. Lovely clean premises, helpful and cheerful staff, good food and delightful garden.

Review 11:My pet hate - a hotel that says it has parking but in fact a) there's not enough of it and b) it's tight and difficult. Horrible arrival experience, trying to manouvre into a small space, in the end had to park so I was parking someone else in - not good. The room was small and pokey and I woke up covered in insect bites, though I can't really say whether it was the room/bed, or maybe happened earlier in the day, eg sitting in the garden. I'm still itching a week later. Very grumpy attitude from a staff member. I wasn't offered an evening meal on arrival or told of limited times, so when I tried to get a meal after swimming (about 8pm) was told it was too late and that the girl was too busy to even make a sandwich until later. Disappointing - wasn't going to bother but nothing else nearby so had the boring sandwich.

Review 12:Beautiful old building with little nooks and crannies and comfortable lounges, quite close to the sea. Nice swimming pool.

Review 13:Room needs hangers for coats. And for towels.

Review 14:Lovely location. Hotel had character. Good parking. Swimming pool was great. Room big. Staff was lovely, but quite under a lot of pressure.

Review 15:Initial welcome not forthcoming - were told check in 13.30 which is not what the bkg form stated. Rather casual instructions about leaving luggage unattended Double bed and shower instead of 2 singles and bath as quoted/requested. That said we did enjoy a lovely overnight after a shaky start and would stay again.

Review 16:Location perfect for cricket Statts v Devon

Review 17:Ideally located for beach and town, and the excellent cleanliness of the Hotel, beautiful light room. Stayed with grandchildren that were made most welcome.

Review 18:We would of liked better quality tea with our breakfast

Review 19:Fabulous quiet location but close to the town and beach. A great hotel with plenty of space to sit, read and relax in a variety of rooms with very helpful staff.

Review 20:Our room was like a cupboard and badly in need of redecoration the paper was coming unstuck from the walls. The web site and brochure show modern spacious rooms this was awful. The bathroom shower was a triangle tray half the size of a normal shower and impossible to wash properly in. The old tin teapot had a warped lid when you poured it came out all over the tray and saucer. Plastic table placemats used as tops to bedside furnishings. Dogs barking in corridor at night. TV as small as a microwave. Lights from car park glaring through curtains till at least midnight. We were exhausted by morning and pleased to leave.

Review 21:Cleanliness Quality of food Friendliness of breakfast waiting staff Swimming pool

Review 22:I booked for 2 adults and 2 children on booking.com and your website said that an extra bed could be put in free of charge for the second child but when we arrived that information had not gone through to the hotel and one child was without a bed. I think this was more booking.com's issue. The hotel helped us as best they could consudering the time of night we arrived.

Review 23:The bell ornament at the top of the reception stairs. The owner for being helpfu and available personally so late at night.

Review 24:Our bathroom was very small, so would choose a bigger room on our next visit.

Review 25:Very comfortable bed, and excellent food with a good selection of vegetables. Very pleasant and welcoming staff.

Review 26:Room was small and only single glazed. Corner Shower was only three quarter sized. No bath. Couldn't book dinner any later in the day than breakfast time. Very small television .

Review 27:Location was very good, just a few minutes walk from The Esplanade. The room was ready when we arrived. Free car parking. Nice English breakfast.

Review 28:the character of the hotel was used well embellished with artifacts. quiet peaceful location. friendly efficient staff. v.comfortable bed. delicious multiple choices at breakfast.

Review 29:Good welcome, shown where to park when car park was full. Sandwiches prepared to order when late arriving and coffee available free to help oneself in bar area. Tea/coffee facilities in room, lovely dining room and breakfast, good choice, cooked to order. Wished could stay longer.

Review 30:The decor in the room was extremely dated but this actually was in keeping with the old fashioned (in a good way) attitude of the hotel. We left a window open as it was very hot and found a cat on the bed in the middle of the night but this was not the hotels fault, or their car!

Review 31:Were made to feel very welcome and received impeccable service. Breakfast was of a very high quality and seemed to have limitless choices

Review 32:the set up of the room, with the two single beds squashed up against the double the bizarre hook on the bathroon door that was too high up for 3 of us to use toast at breakfast, which was barely cooked and had to be sent back

Review 33:The location and grounds. Staff were lovely.

Review 34:Parking a little difficult and limited.

Review 35:The furnishing were exceptionally good way above what one normally gets in a modern characterless hotel these days.

Review 36:Very limited choice of main courses at dinner (3) especially when one was "off". Never saw the wine waiter on the last day despite asking for wine with the meal

Review 37:Friendliness of staff, atmosphere.

Review 38:The room and ensuite were clean and well equipped. The room had a view of the garden in bloom and the breakfasts were good - plenty of tea and toast as well as the full English breakfast. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The Drawing room and patio were a treat.

Review 39:Bedroom and bathroom very small and in need of redecoration wallpaper peeling in places. None of these would be a particular problem if the room price wasn't so expensive.

Review 40:When we stayed there was a power cut so we didn't have our breakfast and couldn't shower

Review 41:The hotel was very close to the town centre so you could walk into town for shopping or go out for dinner

Review 42:The television and mobile receptions weren't too good. That may have been due to high winds on one of the days. Also one morning there was a small blood stain on a pillow one morning which wasn't changed.

Review 43:The atmosphere was as I remember from visits to Sidmouth when I was a child. The location of the hotel was also very good in relation to the beach and the town.

Review 44:It was spotlessly clean & the bed was very comfortable. The hotel was Victorian & was furnished with Antique furniture, it was very attractive.

Review 45:No bad experience just the room being a tad overpriced. Very dated that's all.

Review 46:The staff are lovely! Marie Therese is a diamond and makes you feel so at home. The night staff will go out of their way to help you with good and the breakfast is delivered so promptly it's amazing. The pool is nice too

Review 47:Poor wifi signal except in lounge, bar not open until 6 so couldn't have tea/drinks on return from a day out

Review 48:Decent sized family room and v clean

Review 49:parking was poor, room was a bit small considering the money we paid which I though was a bit expensive, as said the cleaner was loud on a morning talking to everyone which was nice but gave no opportunity for a lay in,

Review 50:most things were okay, bit noisy on a morning after 8.30 with the cleaner so a lay in was out of the question, food was okay,

Review 51:no WiFi in room, just when I had spare time to read The Mail. Creaky headboard, room needs reviving, very dated. No atmosphere in Bar area. Very overpriced.

Review 52:Location

Review 53:As the two 4 star hotels either side were charging far less for b&b plus dinner and the Glen was pretty empty for my stay, they cld have given me a better room to encourage repeat bookings.

Review 54:Few people used the pool

Review 55:The Room decor was very dated. The hall had a very strong smell of paint. Disappointed for the cost.

Review 56:Staff very friendly but room was very dated and smelt of paint.

Review 57:Enjoyed two night stay at this historic hotel. Staff very welcoming, food at breakfast and in the restaurant could not be faulted. Short walk from the seafront. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Review 58:Bed was rather uncomfortable. I had to ask for the heating to be turned on. Furniture in the room was rickety. Bedroom carpet could have been better cleaned there was a hairband from the previous occupant by the skirting board. It was difficult to find your way around as there were lots of passages and stairs and I did not see all the signs clearly.

Review 59:The bathroom was updated and very clean The swimming pool was much appreciated and clean Breakfast was prompt and plentiful The staff generally were helpful and polite. on site parking was good.

Review 60:The room was small..expected bigger. Asked for a fan as it was so hot..they were unable to locate one. TV very small

Review 61:Food was good,especially the breakfast.Excellent staff,particularly Terry..excellent waiter.

Review 62:The room wasn't big but, in fairness it was a single room.

Review 63:The ability to book a single room at a single room price. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

Review 64:Nothing to dislike

Review 65:Care shown by the staff towards my elderly parents was superb. At request they provided suitable aids in the bathroom, and front door ramp. The staff took the time to listen to my father who has dementia. Lovely hotel full of character. I would certainly recommend it to family and friends.

Review 66:Beds uncomfortable, mixed crockery, Stayed 4 nights, had to change room after 1st night (we spoke to other guests in same situation), car parking a problem, redecoration needed in Dining room, overall disappointed

Review 67:Location, breakfast - we only stayed bed & breakfest, Hotel is full of character, should be a lot better

Review 68:I understand this totally because of the listed nature and general architecture of the building, but the room was very small for two people and the shower tiny. This would put me off returning as I do like space in which to relax properly!

Review 69:I like the interesting shapes and decor of the rooms and corridors in the hotel. The staff were very efficient, helpful and friendly - especially one of the owners we met and the young porter who carried up our bags and even refused a tip.

Review 70:The bathroom was FAR too small and the lighting in the bedroom was poor. All the floorboards creaked above during the night. The room needs modernising.

Review 71:Dining room and staff.

Review 72:Quite small rooms, not sound proof at all (we could hear absolutely everything from downstairs and the neighbouring rooms). A little bit overpriced, but this is relatively normal for England.

Review 73:Nice typical British hotel, good location, staff are very friendly, clean rooms and nice food. I would recommend it for a short stay, but not long holidays. Good size parking as well.

Review 74:Bathroom water pressure was slightly sporadic. Also had to sit at designated tables at breakfast which was slightly odd.

Review 75:Location was great, breakfast was very good, had a very comfortable stay.

Review 76:Would of been miffed if having paid full price for the room I had. Having to navigate the labyrinth of up and down stairs, through doors and long corridors. Not for those who have difficulty walking or asthma. Wi fi was advertised, strength of signal very weak and not available in room. Even when sitting in lounge near reception still unable to connect.

Review 77:Had a late deal on room when booking. Room was clean and adequate for my short stay of one night. Breakfast was plentiful, although busy, staff were quick and efficient.

Review 78:There was nothing that we didn't like

Review 79:The atmosphere at the hotel was relaxing, friendly, and comfortable. The staff were friendly, very helpful and non-intrusive. Whilst the decor may be considered 'dated', this is actually in keeping with the beautiful listed building that it is and does not feel out of date. It adds to the comfort of the surroundings. The swimming pool and gym are both perfectly adequate and welcoming features. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. The price is ok when u take into account that breakfast is included, and parking, and the location avoids travel costs into sidmouth.

Review 80:looking dated. Menu very 70's . single room price was good, but quite expensive for doubles. room for massage therapies far too small. The therapist would have more room if I'd lain in the back of my car

Review 81:has character, parking tight but good to have, pool and gym good. breakfast choice great. Great and reasonably priced massage.

Review 82:the mattresses although comfortable were showing signs of heavy use..it didn.t stop us sleeping well though.

Review 83:the room was well furnished.and the decor pretty.good bath and shower.

Review 84:I had to leave.

Review 85:The hotel is like stepping back in time, the furniture, the decor and the whole surroundings are a real eye opener when smartness and quality was the done thing. Food was excellent as well !!!

Review 86:Availability of spa treatments, hotel diary did not tie in with that of therapist ( although short notice)

Review 87:The staff were extremely courteous and helpful. Interesting building with history, good to be able to park, less traffic noise than other hotels nearer sea front Therapies and pool available

Review 88:Tired and dated.

Review 89:Great location.

Review 90:Family roomThe put up bed was not big enough for my teenage son

Review 91:Excellent breakfast

Review 92:Minor issues of cleanliness in our room

Review 93:Quiet hotel with lovely rooms and good food

Review 94:Excellent location, food, very comfortable, a very relaxing stay. Staff very helpful and friendly. Would stay there again.

Review 97:Extremely friendly staff, lovely breakfast, great facilities in an excellent location.

Review 101:Excellent food. Friendly and welcoming staff

Review 102:Beautiful hotel and old fashioned charm. Good position near sea front.

Review 103:Car parking was limited

Review 104:The fact that the hotel pool was right next to my room

Review 105:Size of room, small lounge/bar, stairways.

Review 106:Nice location, not too far from beach and town.

Review 107:Absolutely a wonderful hotel. The staff was excellent and the room beautiful. Could not complain about a thing

Review 108:Everything

Review 109:Automatic dinner booking would have been useful, better value for money to be had elsewhere

Review 110:Excellent location, polite staff

Review 112:Bed not at all comfortable

Review 113:Location of the hotel.

Review 114:friendly, caring, helpful

Review 115:pretty building. Clean & comfortable. Affordable. Wish I'd had more time to spend and enjoy the gardens etc.

Review 116:Furniture was old, decor was daited. Staff on reception were generally quite rude.

Review 117:Wheelchair access

Review 118:two little steps into bathroom

Review 119:location lift parking

Review 120:The bed in the room was not the most comfortable. Most welcomin

Review 121:Courtesy of staff and relaxing atmosphere.

Review 123:Main house

Review 124:Lovely building, friendly staff, good breakfast

Review 125:Loved the location, walkable to the town, beach and facilities. The hotel was very clean and homely.

Review 126:The friendly atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Food was very good

Review 127:Not a bad experience, but did not think the one dinner we had was value for money.

Review 128:Friendly staff, big bedroom, close to town centre.
