Reviews for Hallmark Hotel Carlisle

Review 1:Despite its makeover it still is a bit faded. Old wooden Windows ran with condensation. "Free WIFI" did not work in the room

Review 2:Convenient for the city and the station

Review 3:My room 101 was facing a night club where the noise levels from the music meant it was impossible to sleep before 2am when the music stopped

Review 4:Location, very central and close to all amenities

Review 5:Very dated, Executive bedroom for £99 was a shocker. Bathroom covered in mould with a 70's feel! Radiators banged and clunked all night. Very poor for the money.

Review 6:Location is very central.

Review 7:The car park was a bit of a challenge (reduced due to building works). If I'd known in advance I'd probably have booked elsewhere on this occasion

Review 8:It's a well-located hotel

Review 9:We booked a suite, which turned out to be a room with yes, a king sized bed, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary 2 (Comfy) chairs and table and a settee which was in a pointless position and not movable! the furniture was old and tired, the woodwork was faded, there was a door outside our 'suite' which lead to the cleaners cupboard the door had be modified but not repainted or even cleaned up! Our shower did not work!

Review 10:we had no bad experience what so ever with the hotel just the problem getting home due to the trains cancelled

Review 11:we had such a lovely night everything was so lovely and we would return again the breakfast was lovely

Review 12:Hotel free Car park is not very large can get blocked in. But there is a large station car park which you have to pay for. Some bedrooms are not large. Rooms at the front have weekend noise from the bars around, but we slept well, but then we live in a city centre. Stair carpets and hall ways a little woren.

Review 13:Location in the centre of the city by the railway station. And a bar which was clean and well staffed. We enjoyed our stay for three nights

Review 14:Hotel was way over priced- staff did'nt seem to have a clue- attempted to overcharge our group on a couple of occasions. Both rooms booked were poor- had to change rooms due to faulty utilities.

Review 15:Initially had a room at back of hotel and could not sleep for noise from disco. After complaining we got moved to a quieter room.

Review 16:Location is excellent very central especially to train station.

Review 17:Car parking situation is a nightmare for unwary 1st time travellers. Before arrival familiarise yourself with the location of the car park and how to access it. It is NOT the car park behind the hotel, it is located at the rear opposite but not signposted and not accessible from the front due to no entry sign. If you park in the car park in the grounds of the hotel this is the station car park and you will be charged an arm and a leg which although the hotel refunds 25% this is not stated on the internet booking details. Wifi is very slow only 2-bar, and only one device allowed. TV remote batteries nearly dead. No USB port on TV. Noisy night time town centre location should be double glazed.

Review 18:bath & shower

Review 19:We had slight problem with our WiFi which although worked in the hotel reception it did not work in our room. Our stay was first class resulting in us being totally refreshed to continue our journey into Scotland. Looking forward to our next visit.

Review 20:The friendless, attentive and caring attitude of all staff members. Realised when checking in had not reserved a breakfast was provided with a discount card and received a full 50 percent discount. The buffet breakfast was superb. The receptionist Rachel was particularly helpful and our grateful thanks to her.

Review 21:Nothing!

Review 22:Great location right next to Carlisle train station. Warm welcome from staff who were helpful throughout & let us leave our luggage when we checked out. Large & nicely decorated rooms with ample tea/coffee facilities & great shower! Within minutes of town centre with plenty of restaurants, shops & tourist attractions such as the Castle, museum & cathedral. Our room had a great view of the citadel and was very quiet despite being on a main road. We would definitely recommend staying here!

Review 23:The noise from rowdy people fighting, shouting abuse at each other & swearing outside from 3am until 5am, this kept me awake & I fell the hotel should police this & call the police to stop it. The bathrooms could do with updating & replacing.

Review 24:The staff were very polite, helpful and friendly and made you feel very welcome. The rooms were a good size & the decor in the bedroom area very nice.

Review 25:Room decoration and condition was a little tired, but otherwise comfortable and certainly fit for purpose. Staff were very helpful and effective, doing their utmost to make the stay as friendly and comfortable as possible.

Review 26:The Bathrooms are in need of refurbishment. also there was little room between the wall and the bed. The room was more like a single room than a double.

Review 27:Public areas were of a high standard. staff very friendly

Review 28:breakfast could have been better not quick enough replenishment of hot items . Window sills dirty ESP in bathroom and shower over bath not the most powerful

Review 29:Lovely room ,really comfy bed ,decent value for what we paid and great location .

Review 30:Prime central location just outside Carlisle station for easy access to the town centre. The request for an upper storey room was honoured on arrival and the stay was overall very pleasant. Would certainly recommend it to others who wish to have a short stay in Carlisle centre with little fuss.

Review 31:I had booked a twin room, as we checked in I asked if it was a twin but when we got to the room, it was a small double bed. They did swap rooms once i complained. The shower curtains were far too long and covered the plughole. Not hygienic and very easy to fix.

Review 32:Great location. Great bat. Friendly staff. Comfortable and clean rooms.

Review 33:The room was like a box room, very tiny. And it was freezing no heating had been put on and it was a cold October day outside. Not very welcoming coming into a cold room. On using the shower in the morning we found that that was useless aswell. It would of done as a single room not a double.

Review 34:The hotel is lovely and in a great place for the station and shops and bars etc

Review 35:The noise from the front street was awful from 10pm - 5am Sat/Sun. We were in room 325 which was a fab room to the front but we could here the music from the club along the road and all night heard all the young revelers at the taxi rank over the road. This probably is only a problem at the weekend. I would stay here again but would need a room to the back unless they get double glazing.

Review 36:very central hotel right next to train station. All staff were very nice, friendly and helpful. Upstairs could do with a bit updating but we had a massive family room and very comfortable.

Review 37:Not enough bar staff. Had to wait quite a while to be acknowledged and then to be served. Decor was dated and worn.

Review 38:Location to the town, relaxing atmosphere

Review 39:I say at your hotel around every three weeks I find it handy for what I whant to do and easy to get around however the last few times i have stayed the room has not been to its best and the noise from the street ( bin lorry ect ) just not good Janice Grant

Review 40:The hotel is looking a bit tired and could benefit from decoration, perhaps that's why it was so dark inside. The bed was made in rather a strange way and went in the order of mattress, mattress protector, duvet with no cover on, sheet and then blankets on top.

Review 41:The staff were, without exception, all excellent and nothing was too much trouble. I ate in the restaurant and the food was fine. Overall, I thought it a bit expensive for what it was.

Review 42:Awful, Cold, extremely unclean, out dated, "dog blanket" for the duvet!!!! Breakfast had very cheap bread. I think the ibis or premier inn is more classier and we had "an executive room" one towel, one shower gel for two people!

Review 43:Location

Review 44:It was just short of a swimming pool... I love a swim in a morning..

Review 45:The hotel was brilliant.. Great food and really great.. Friendly staff.. I loved it.. Thanks.

Review 46:For the cost it was a bit dated, the shower was pretty 1970s. Still worked just fine, but for the nightly cost I would expect a bit more.

Review 47:Fantastic location, right near downtown and rail station. Nice clean rooms that were super comfy, decent showers. Great breakfast and the team was super nice!

Review 48:The fact that our room was not cleaned properly, as their were empty beer and wine bottles left behind...we were subsequently moved to a better room.

Review 49:The location was near the centre of town

Review 50:The only problem I had was the noise coming in from outside, for the price I paid I would of expected better soundproofing! I hardly slept all night due to it.

Review 51:I liked how friendly and helpful the staff were, the location of the hotel, free car parking facilities, the comfort and cleanliness of the hotel room.

Review 52:Our room had strong smell of cigarette smoke in th evening and morning. Not sure where is was coming from but thats the only downside really for us!

Review 53:The special touch of bowl bed and treats for our pooch. Very nice

Review 54:Due to old fashioned double glazing in rooms the noise from drunken revellers outside was a real problem into the small hours of the mornings.

Review 55:Modernisation downstairs in bar and restaurant areas.

Review 56:I travelled to visit a very sick friend in the Cumberland Infirmary. The location was excellent, for me, since I travelled by train, needed taxis, and appreciated the very central location for sightseeing when hospital visiting was prohibited. Dinner was of a far higher quality than I expected. Strongly recommended.

Review 57:Woken up at 2am one morning Enjoyableby staff emptying glass bottles outside and doing a bit of shouting.

Review 58:Perfect location for The Railway Station and city centre.

Review 59:loose toilet seat, heated towel rail that didn't heat. I wouldn't have paid the normal price for this room.

Review 60:location, friendly efficient staff, extra pillows

Review 61:Very dirty booked a twin ended up with a double on a business trip would not split room without trying to charge us . No plates at breakfast then no sausages or eggs had to leave without hot breakfast because had to get to work . Tripped over blue roll left in main hotel entrance from delivery .no hotel parking left so had to pay £7:50 there as well and could not log into free wifi but after sharing a bed with work colleague for two night after booking a twin all the above just compound the situation all staff said was sorry but gave no answers

Review 62:Staff where all great and a great central location

Review 63:Really noisy as there was a wedding function on and we could hear smashing bottles up until about 1.30am, not great when you have an 18 month old baby. There was no air conditioning and we couldn't have the window open because the noise was even louder, we complained and were given a fan but it made very little difference

Review 64:Location was good and the hotel was clean and nicely presented

Review 65:Minor outside soise because it was bank holiday and the European market- but the room was double gazed. We just didn't want to shut all the windows so I suppose it was our problem, not the hotel's.

Review 66:The staff were wonderful- quick off the mark, professional and kindly. It is a little dated but it was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and well-appointed in spite of the coloured suite. Excellent value for money, interesting and pleasant. It felt like a well-run hotel in every respect.

Review 67:The bathroom needed renovating, cleanliness was 6/10. Bedroom was comfy although noise outside was unbelievable and ceiling had obviously had a flood because wallpaper was bubbled and hanging.

Review 68:Breakfast and service was good

Review 69:Small, cramped room with poor facilities Sold as a double but bed very small and room too small to even fit a bedside table and lamp on both sides Wafer thin curtains that do not block out light Shower temperature could not be controlled (it was hot or very hot) Lack of parking spaces meant parking in nearby NCP at additional cost of £9 overnight

Review 70:Convenient location, very close to station Helpful staff

Review 71:We have stayed at Hallmark a few times and it is always good, this time we had a very comfortable bedroom with a huge bathroom and plenty of complimentary coffee and tea - stay was a pleasure.

Review 72:Nice hotel, very convenient location and just seconds from the railway. Shame the free wifi was only 6hrs from when you first log-on. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 73:Room 116 was soooo noisy, situated between train station and a bust pub was ridiculous. It was like you were sat in the pub with them. Advised reception and they apologised, would have been easier to go out and have a bevy with them rather than lie in bed at 2am listening to drunkards!

Review 74:Comfy bed and hot water for bath was a god send after our marathon hike.

Review 75:Bathroom in need of an upgrade especially the shower. The cover on the bed wasn't clean. The wifi only lasts for 6 hours so was unable to use it in the morning.

Review 76:Good breakfast

Review 77:The noisey bar nearby

Review 78:Every single member of staff (apart from one surly guy on reception) couldn't do enough to help us. Very friendly, very efficient. Very warm.

Review 79:That our double bed was 2 singles pushed together made for a unsettled nite as kept slipping between the mattresses

Review 80:Great location, helpful and polite staff and a clean hotel

Review 81:Cleanliness of the bathroom was very poor, also very dated needs complete refurbishment. Poor value for money, we found the couple we travelled with had booked their room for substantially less at around the same time.

Review 82:Location, right next to train station and short walk to bars and shops.

Review 83:Requested a double room, got 2 single beds pushed together which was unfomfortable 1 towel and only enough condiments for 1 person No bath mat Very hot room with no air conditioning Rang up reception but never got an answer £78 for 1 night in a 4 star hotel? Worth £40 at most and stayed in better 2 star hotels; Terrible hotel with a terrible manager who doesn't care if you have problems!

Review 84:Location close to station Barman was friendly, although he was honest about the ridiculous hotel bar pricing.

Review 85:Room was a little bit dated.

Review 86:Convenient for the city center and railway station.Free parking. The room though a little dated was well furnished with a large bathroom with plenty of hot water.

Review 87:When booking I asked for a quiet room which Room 225 was! However, on returning to our room at about 11 pm the noise coming from a Charity Darts function was horrendous! I did complain to reception but there wasn't much they could do! Even ear plugs didn't drown out the noise that continued for some time! I did tell reception when I checked out and got a "very sorry"! Don't think I will return to your otherwise good hotel!

Review 88:Location and friendly staff

Review 89:The hotel is very old and requires a proper refurbishment, the bathroom stank and there was fungus on the walls. Interior design wasn't the greatest, old furniture, no modern touch. The windows were not isolating external noise from the main street therefore it was impossible to enjoy a peaceful sleep. I expected much better from this stay and it turned out as a huge disappointment.

Review 90:Biscuits and coffee in the room, ironing board in the room, central location, next to the main train station and close to the stores.

Review 91:Some of female reception staff are unhelpul, and downright rude, whilst other female staff are Fantastic ! Very dated rooms, even the refurbished ones, are way overpriced. Plastic shower curtains ( in this day and age ?) Avocado bathroom suites from the 70's, even in the supposedly ''newly refurbished'' rooms, that are charged at the extortionate price of £120 !!! It's called the Hallmark not Harrods !!

Review 92:Very very clean, kudos to the cleaning staff, who seem to work tirelessly to keep on top of a hotel, that needs a desperate, proper refurbishment, to justify charging the prices they do. Location is great, right next to the train station, and close to the centre, but so is the Crown & Mitre, only 5 minutes around the corner, which is much cheaper (It was fully booked)

Review 93:Smell ofcigarete smoke in room. King size bed requested, given a double.breakfast was inedible.car parking facilities poor,£11 per car for over night parking, despite hotel reduction.

Review 94:Staff were very professional and helpful

Review 95:We booked late checkout through booking.com and were told it would be no extra cost. Upon arrival we were charged £10 per room.

Review 96:The staff were very helpful.

Review 97:Horrified that breakfast fruit was laid out the night before - anyone could have accessed it and it tasted poor in the morning. Wifi situation is ludicrous - you get an unreadable passcode which expires at midnight therefore early birds have to wait for reception to open before they can use internet. PLEASE SET EXPIRY FOR MID-DAY not Midnight to make yours and our lives easier.

Review 98:Close to station and town

Review 99:No remote control for TV No light globe in bedside table WiFi signal very weak on Level 3 Very small & slow elevator No face washers provided

Review 100:Location for train travellers Reception staff Room size

Review 101:The drinks were expensive in the bar, only drunk there twice, & meals were also over priced so did not eat in the hotel.

Review 102:Staff were polite & friedly at all times. Excellent choice of food for breakfast.

Review 103:Room ceiling looked as if it was going to fall in at any minute massive cracks in ceiling. Paint peeling off wall at window and damp patches and rotten wood in bathroom. Breakfast cooked buffet was cold.

Review 104:Good location for travelling by train

Review 105:Leaky tap in bathroom- flooded the floor, but as hotel was full, I had to put up with lots of towels to soak it up. The shower didn't work. Both receptionist I spoke to on checking in and out hadn't mastered the art of smiling and eye contact. "Enjoy your stay" didn't sound very sincere. Modern decor in a run down old building just made it look a bit sad. Flat rate breakfasts are no use to me. I don't eat £10 worth of food.

Review 106:Central Location. Night porter as friendly and helpful as he could be over leak in bathroom

Review 107:We had an executive room with connecting door, the sound from the guy on phone in next room seemed as if he was in our room

Review 108:Location was perfect, staff were efficient and friendly

Review 109:The room was just filthy. Dust everywhere, mould up the walls and all over the bathroom (I have a photograph of furry white mould on the wall in the bedroom). I called reception from the phone in the room to check what time the music from the event downstairs was stopping and was nearly sick - the mouthpiece smelled like someone had been smoking into it solidly for a decade. Stains all over the side of the divan and dirty mugs for tea and coffee. Spent all night feeling grimy and disgusting. I had to leave for work and was rushing in the morning so did not have time to stop and complain, but I would not stay here again. I travel a lot for work and stay in many different types of hotels/inns/b&b's and this was by far the most disgusting hotel room I have ever slept in. Wish I'd had time to complain to the company but I was on a long week of travelling and just didn't have time - I just wanted to get some sleep!

Review 110:Room was large, staff were friendly and the location good. Breakfast was nice although mug was dirty.

Review 111:Not ideal for wheelchair access. The companion would have needed to be fit enough to push wheelchair up steep ramp into hotel. Hotel staff had to help with this. Lift is only suitable for small wheelchair. We were on the third floor and had to go through three fire doors to our room.

Review 112:Hotel décor was ok. We were put in double room but I asked for twin, so we were moved. Double room was small and twin room was a lot more spacious.

Review 113:Nothing

Review 114:The staff were very friendly , hotel in a great location for the train station and shops all in all we enjoyed our stay if ever going there again would stay in same hotel

Review 115:Hotel needs updates in places. Pubs close by were emptying there bottle bins from 7am in morning, noise was horrendous, unable to sleep.

Review 116:Friendly staff, large room and bed, free wifi.

Review 117:Bathroom ( shower room ) very small, shower leaked cracked tiles on floor and loads of mildew all round. Tiles had been painted over at some stage but made it look worse. Shower never used because of condition.

Review 118:Good location. Friendly staff.

Review 119:the first room we had was dirty, the towels were filthy, and the toilet/shower room was not only smelling of smoke but had black silicon on the shower and rotting wood paneling. I requested a room change and received one but this room wasn't much better. Spoke to the duty manager who guarenteed a full discount. (Received a 25% refund), sent several emails expressing my surprise at this and have never had a reply or a refund. Horrible hotel, discussing management. They just didn't care, they had the money and dismissed our custom. Appalling!

Review 120:nothing

Review 121:Night club behind is a real problem if you want to sleep before 1am in a room at the back.

Review 122:well appointed rooms, spacious and comfortable; quality hospitality tray and complimentary toiletries; plentiful breakfast options.

Review 123:The beds were hard an uncomfortable. the windows in the room couldn't be opened and were frosted. it was noisy

Review 124:Breakfast was OK & the staff were very helpful.

Review 125:Given impression of getting a suite with 4 poster and lux bathroom ended up with an ex standard room same as the ones in holiday inn but at half the price

Review 126:Bathroom a bit tired and dated.

Review 127:Next to the railway station so great for traveling by train. Friendly, helpful staff. Comfy bed. Great breakfast. Nice bar and restaurant.

Review 128:The bed was very uncomfortable and the toilet seat was broken, the bathroom was extremely small. The free wifi would only allow one device to be used at a time and the code only lasted for 7 hours. Breakfast buffet was cleared away at 9am, but they will cook you what you want from the menu.

Review 129:The hotel is next door to the railway station and an easy walk to the city centre and Carlisle Castle and the museum. Able to leave the car in their car park after check out. The room had an iron and ironing board, spare pillows and towels.

Review 130:Very small bathroom and old-fashioned. No fresh air in the room and fluffy. Unexperienced and young restaurant staff. Breakfast with no fresh meat and cheese. Hotel should be qualified as a 3 star hotel, not a 4 star hotel.

Review 131:Hotel central located in Carlisle. Friendly reception staff. Quick to come upstairs in order to fix problems.

Review 132:Appears to be on the main route from clubland to chav city. Dont take a room at the front if you want a good night's sleep. We stayd on a Friday and were regularly awoken through the night by shouting and screaming outside the hotel.

Review 133:Good standard, good price

Review 134:6hr WiFi code... not explained at check-in so WiFi went off. Had to ring reception more than once to get new codes.

Review 135:Friendly staff and very comfortable room.

Review 136:As a lone woman traveller I felt both welcome and secure. The staff were all very friendly and seemed to go out of their way to be welcoming. Eating alone can be a daunting experience but staff made me feel welcome with their friendly approach.

Review 137:Wi if a bit slow. Password changed too frequently for guests.

Review 138:Staff helpful, quiet hotel despite railway station next door. Central to City, good breakfast choice. Beds oh so comfy

Review 139:Noise from wetherspoons v loud if you leave window open.

Review 140:Breakfast ... beds v comfy. I stayed in 3rd floor twin room. Reception staff very helpful. Food at resteraunt beautiful.
