Reviews for Earl Of Doncaster Hotel
Review 1:Although refurbished some of the paintings in the room where terrible lol but I guess that's a taste thing, but really let the lovely rooms down! Quite expensive similar prices to bigger city's eg leeds
Review 2:Clean friendly hotel , staff were lovely and happy to help. Well located, rooms newly decorated. Over all a good experience
Review 3:The restaurant was closed for the evening and I had no pre-notification - If I had known then I would have booked elsewhere especially looking at the price paid per room. The service and quality of breakfast was very poor. I would not recommend and I certainly will not be re-booking to stay here again.
Review 4:staff were friendly wasn't happy when we asked for a local takeaway menu or number to order some food to hotel room they didn't have no ideas they just sent us away at main reception saying they didn't know also someone hacked into my computer threw wifi my computer got a virus
Review 5:the bed was really comfy and the breakfast was great wide variety of food available
Review 6:That we hadn't booked for more than 1 night
Review 7:Great service. Clean spacious room. Good quality breakfast. Beautiful Art Deco interior. Ideal location.
Review 8:Given the key to our room but when we opened the door the toom hadnt been serviced. Also a shelf in the bathroom would be handy
Review 9:Loved the decor of the hotel and the closeness of the racecourse.
Review 10:Black walls, furniture, black carpet and lights - a bit like staying in a cave. Not enough light to read and dull lighting in the bathroom too.
Review 11:Staff were great. Room was spacious, bed was very comfortable.
Review 12:Some staff were a bit on the rude side. Lots of guest grumbling because you were not allowed to get a drink in the bar because it was closed but had no problem topping up the drinks of a birthday party.
Review 13:Beautiful hotel
Review 14:We were acutely embarrassed when bar staff (in packed bar) on Sat 24th Oct refused to serve us because we only had Scottish bank notes. Bar maid said she was told by management she would have any Scottish notes she accepted deducted from her wages! Your hotel needs to advertise the fact that you do not take Scottish bank notes rather than embarrass unsuspecting Scottish guests!
Review 15:2 nights spent in Deluxe Room was first class 23rd 24th Oct 15 and food in dining room was excellent.
Review 16:Toilet had been used and wasn't clean, the sink and bathroom floor had detritus, remote control didn't work and the room was cold. There was no extra duvets/blankets. At check in we were not told the breakfast time or where breakfast would be.
Review 17:Decor very nice, well decorated. Bed and furnishings very comfortable. Serving staff in breakfast room very accommodating and helpful- we were late for breakfast. Staff were pleasant and welcoming.
Review 18:Breakfast was cold & my order was wrong, Not to much of an issue for us as not big breakfast fans & when spoke to staff they corrected the wrongs however it was still cold. Bed wasn't very comfortable for us.
Review 19:The hotels interior was superb. Breakfast room made me feel like i was in the 1930's.
Review 20:Only down side is there wasn't any tooth paste which I expected there to be so I didn't pack any.
Review 21:The room was very clean and great value for money
Review 22:No soundproofing for the wedding disco which was loud all evening into the night i.e. gone 12am. The restaurant tried to compete but their background music was drowned out. We were vibrated into the bar area.
Review 23:The Art Deco restaurant was lovely as were the rooms. Food and the price thereof was good.
Review 24:There were not enough bar staff to handle the amount of guests requiring refreshments, the only hotel I have ever been refused to be served and told I can only use the function room bar, even though I was a paying guest attending a wedding.
Review 25:Speedy check in Excellent room Amazing art décor ballroom
Review 26:De my last Rib off pricing due to a festival double since my stay before Rib off Exchange rare 20% more than the rest of my other expences surfing that week Charged me double for dunner on my credit card ones on the final Bill and again seperately
Review 27:Nothing special
Review 28:The carpet had an iron burn it was evident that the iron was not replaced upon burning dress for wedding reception iron itself was a cheap one why was it not replaced
Review 29:Not a lot
Review 30:Special birthday weekend at the races. I was not notified that the restaurant or bar closed at 3pm.Hence,we had to traspe around Doncaster looking for a restaurant that was not fully booked. Not even offered Amy discount or a complementary glass of wine
Review 31:Exceptional room and ensure.
Review 32:wasn't told before booking that the restaurant and bar wasn't open Saturday due to race meeting. Was overpriced for just room with no facilities.
Review 33:Nice hotel, nice staff.
Review 34:One of the night shift manager was not very friendly or helpful At all he seems very angry and aggressive .
Review 35:The rooms were very big and spacious the bed was very comfortable the bathroom was clean and tidy, The staff and reception was very helpful and friendly.
Review 36:Cocktail bar staff didn't appear to know how to make various cocktails nor did they have the necessary ingredients to hand e.g. the fruit for Pimms
Review 37:Nice room, comfortable bed, lovely bathroom, good parking
Review 38:Superior room tired and dated with 25 to 30 year old bathroom. Was told at 9.05pm that restaurant no longer serving so tried to get room service at 9.10 pm to be told by reception that kichen closed even though the cut off was 9.30pm
Review 39:Re vamp of downstairs bar and restaurant
Review 40:The breakfast is ok, but it ought to be great, given the price.
Review 41:Very pleasant room and pretty good bathroom. The room was at the front, but was blissfully quiet.
Review 42:Nothing
Review 43:All staff were very welcoming and helpful - especially Diane with pre arrival telephone queries. The junior suite was very good with large comfortable bed and spacious sitting area. It was an excellent venue for our 64th wedding anniversary.
Review 44:Service at breakfast was shocking. I had to ask in the end if we could order a drink and then had to ask if we could order a cooked breakfast. We were seated and ignored. The waitress got my order wrong. Terrible service. Waitress made excuses that they had been very busy. I understand this but I don't want to hear excuses, I wanted good service. Breakfast price is additional and I felt it really wasn't worth the price. Very disappointing.
Review 45:Great location
Review 46:the draws in the wardrobe were very restrictive of hanging up long items like dresses and suits - suggest move draws into vacant cupboard space next to wardrobe
Review 47:Good location for the purpose of the stay, nice surroundings and very comfortable
Review 48:A much improved hotel since our last visit, the rooms are excellent. The location is also ideal for all amenities and attractions. Highly recommended!
Review 49:Very crowded, staff a little over whelmed. Restaurant too busy so ordered room service food. Fish and chips all batter and very little fish. Complained to desk but no compensation.
Review 50:Junior suite was very comfortable and good value
Review 51:The only negative I have to say is that drinks at the bar are quite expensive.
Review 52:Excellent hotel, friendly helpful staff & plenty of choice at breakfast.
Review 53:Nothing special for the price. Twin room and the beds were very close! Almost the same as a double bed! The room was small, no bath.
Review 54:Decor is very nice and authentic
Review 55:Windows do not open in the rooms. Half hour wait between starters being cleared and main course arriving, Friday at dinner. Did speak to acting head chef about it, another function going on upstairs is no excuse, ALL guests should receive same level of service.
Review 56:good sized clean room, very good tea and coffee making provisions. Outside seating for smokers
Review 57:Booked room with a balcony but due to health and safety reasons it couldn't be used. Offered another lovely room but bit disappointed as specifically booked room as had balcony. 2 weddings & an event in the bar so was very noisy until quite late.
Review 58:Beautiful hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. Unusual and individually decorated rooms. Great food and breakfast.
Review 59:The staff where so friendly and helpful and the room was beautiful we was even give a room upgrade due to celebrating our wedding anniversary And the 3 course meal was out this world highly recommend
Review 60:No complaints
Review 61:This was our 3rd stay at this lovely hotel . The location for our visit is excellent and the staff lovely. Love the beautiful Art Deco design and the restaurant is beautiful
Review 62:Can not fault this hotel, excellent customer service, décor to the highest quality, comfortable stay, excellent food and surprised that drinks were very reasonably priced.
Review 63:No negatives whatsoever.
Review 64:Incredible room, really friendly reception and bar staff. The hotel has been refurbished to an extremely high standard and puts a lot of our usual London hotels to shame...and at half the price.!
Review 65:Had to wait 20 minutes from ordering kippers to be told they didn't have any. The breakfast for the price wasn't very nice. Ended up leaving a lot of it. I had full English. Egg was swimming in grease. Sausages were a bit pink. Toast came out 10 minutes after the breakfast.
Review 66:Cocktail menu could be a bit more extensive and it would have been nice if the bar staff didn't have to consult the "how to make a mojito" so openly.
Review 67:The staff went out of their way to accommodate us for dinner, even though they had an event, Abba tribute, on in the dining room. The food was fab and the service and staff were excellent.
Review 68:If I had to be really critical (and I mean HAD to), you could argue that some of the smaller finishing touches were missing ... no docking station in rooms for music, unable to use the balcony, towel warmer in the bathroom appeared not to work. That said, absolutely none of that ruined our stay and we would definitely book again!
Review 69:We came for a birthday celebration and the staff could not have done more to ensure the surprise went without issue! We ate in the restaurant twice during our stay and the food was cooked to perfection with a great choice and very reasonably priced. The room we had booked was on the top floor and the view across Doncaster were breathtaking (who knew!). I would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone.
Review 70:Fire alarm going off at 4 in the morning and not being able to return to room for 2 hours. Stood out in cold for one and half hours. Ruined stay.
Review 71:Excellent staff, breakfast, cleanliness and licayion
Review 72:The room was chilly and the bed hard and a bit uncomfortable. We had a family room my daughter had a normal room which was much nicer than our room.
Review 73:The staff were very helpful
Review 74:I have to say we were a little disappointed with the room. After walking through the grand reception the room felt small and looked as if it was in need of some general upkeep.
Review 75:The entrance, bar and restaurant were very well presented and we lived the retro style. The bed was extremely comfy and the shower room was well presented.
Review 76:we need to book into room early to get ready for races the staff did every thing to help, thank you . we have stayed at this hotel about twice a year over the last 5 years and enjoyed the experience every time
Review 77:The deputy manager reminded me of lurch, unpressed suit, could not be bothered to do up the top button on his shirt and always scowled. The house keeper was surly with no hotel mannerisms!!!!!!!!!!!!! Staff unhelpful, as i arrived with Euros in cash and they had no idea of the exchange rate, someone ought to tell them the Euro is legal currency in the UK!!!! If she had been in my employ she would not have lasted 5 minutes
Review 78:Being woken up by housekeeping walking into the room, even though there was a 'for not disturb' sign on the door at 9.30am The bathroom was a little shabby for the decor of the room. Cracking paintwork, silicone sealant mouldy and even though it was a bathroom, there was a strong odor of damp!
Review 79:The hotel in lately is fantastic, rooms are stunning and clean, reception staff are very welcoming.
Review 80:I ate in the restaurant in the evening and it wasn't a great experience. The menu was too long and the food was very bland and uninspiring. The restaurant manager was great and kindly waived the charge as he agreed it was not good enough. There is a new chef, let's hope he sorts out the menu soon. The restaurant is letting down the hotel side. The breakfast was ok, by the way. Again the staff were friendly and brisk.
Review 81:The staff were very friendly and the Superior Double room that I had was very comfortable and nice and quiet. The bed was great. As a hotel, I think it's very good, if over-expensive.
Review 82:The tuning on the TV; most channels were unobtainable. There should be radio channels too ( or a working radio). Also the bath should really have handles for the elderly and a mat for the shower.
Review 83:The style, comfort, ambience and staff.
Review 84:The breakfast was very poor, the restaurant wasn't busy but our breakfast had been forgotten under a heat lamp we had only ordered poached eggs on toast I should of sent it back, but we just left, very disappointed.
Review 85:The room was nice
Review 86:Wait 10 minutes for luke warm water. No shelves for bathroom bits and pieces. Door card worked now and again. Kettle, etc., in bottom of wardrobe! Wardrobe door jammed. House wine terrible.
Review 87:Evening meal in restaurant was good.
Review 88:Ideally located for Doncaster Racecourse. Lovely independent hotel, with recently refurbished rooms done to a high standard. The bar prices are very reasonable for a hotel.
Review 89:Cheap auctioned shelf kept falling off in the shower. Fan didn't work. Bar staff bad language. Valentine meal had bits missing. Additional charges applied to bill that wouldnt have known about if I dnt requested to see bill breakdown.
Review 90:The majority of staff were very friendly and attentative. The steak meal offer was fab and really good value for money.
Review 91:List of problems. Currently awaiting response from Manager due to no-one being on duty to assist with complaint either the evening of our stay, or the next morning when checking out at 11.00am.
Review 92:Light in the main stairwell was out causing me to fall down 3 steps as the carpet is checked giving a false visual step. Found a pair of ladies stockings in my room (107) on the floor by the wardrobe. Make up from previous occupant was in the sink area. The sink in the bathroom is far too small, could only just fit my toothbrush under the tap! for some reason a sink usually found in WC has been fitted in a large bathroom.
Review 93:We have stayed at the hotel previously and found no issues, the location is excellent, the retro style of the hotel is brilliant. we like the fact that it is a unique hotel which stands out from the rest.
Review 94:From outside cannot tell the surprise when you walk in lovely 30's set up good staff comfy room would stay again and breakfast is fresh cooked a rare thing today
Review 95:Sparse and cold bathroom
Review 96:Helpful and welcoming staff Most comfortable bed Lovely room Love the Art Deco décor Really good breakfast choice and service
Review 97:Didn't get much sleep as was poorly so made use of en-suite plus had an early wake up call by having housekeeping coming in
Review 98:Nice looking hotel was a good place to stay as close to race course but not much else
Review 99:We ate in the restaurant my husband's steak was almost uneatable when commented it was fobbed off with a joke. Also we never got offered a sweet or coffee was like we were invisible. When we came to settle the bill there was mistakes, the receptionists deal with it efficiently.
Review 100:The first impressions when we arrived were not good, but when we stepped inside we were pleasantly surprised. Fantastic decor friendly staff the rooms excellent slept really well.
Review 101:I stayed with a group of girl friends & we all liked our rooms, were clean & comfortable. Reception staff were pleasant & helpful, bar staff pleasant although I think one of the young men needs a bit more training with his cocktail making, after 2 attempts we still found one cocktail undrinkable :-( Hotel very well decorated & attention to detail was impressive. We enjoyed our stay.
Review 102:The loo roll holder wasn't attached to the wall properly so the tissue spent most of the time on the floor. There wasn't an anti-slip mat for the bath. The pillows were far too thick. There was a peculiar buzzing sound from the ceiling at 5am every morning which was a bit of a nuisance. A vegetarian option (e.g. veggie sausage) for cooked breakfast would have been great.
Review 103:The waiting staff were very well trained, full of Yorkshire warmth and dedicated to their jobs and making you feel welcome. The hotel was clean and had a good ambience. Also, the décor is fabulous and is reminiscent of Hollywood 1920's glamour.
Review 104:Limited parking, poor service at the reception, poor service in the kitchen, chef cannot even cook an omlette well. Superior Double Room had no bath, just a cold shower. Regulated to 45 degrees Celsius. Ugly shower. Slept on a mattress protector, no sheet. Disturbed sleep by a fire alarm for almost an hour. Will not book again. Will try mount pleasant hotel which has rave reviews.
Review 105:Nothing at all
Review 106:1) Lack of opening windows in bedroom, so choice of noisy air con, or stuffy room. 2) on day 2 our newspapers were expertly delivered to our room, in a nice carrier, accompanied by a note saying the if we did not return the carrier we would be charged £10. The officious tone of this note upset me. 3) we stayed for a weekend, during which the hotel was busy with functions, it may be different in the week. To go to the dining room for dinner one has to go via the cocktail bar, which was often jammed with people enjoying free drinks as part of there function. The hotel really needs to work out which segment of the market they are trying to serve. 4) paying for food, we were happy to have our meals and pay for what we ate, rather than as part of a package. Restaurant systems did not seem to cope well with this, only a small point, but these small points can change a nice experience into a torrid evening
Review 107:The Art Deco feel was good.
Review 108:Website does not match anticipated experience, hotel did not feel clean, staff looked untidy, wifi rubbish, tv has poor choice of channels, no bottled water in room and generally old fashioned 80s feel - stayed at Malmaison in Newcastle earlier in the week for £90 - this hotel more expensive and poor in comparison.
Review 109:Pictures on website look great
Review 110:No mirror in bedroom and no shelves in bathroom. This was compensated for by a reduction in rate and was well handled in the circumstances. The restaurant staff need training in some basics, but compensated by being cheerful and friendly.
Review 111:Super decor in reception and dining room. Responded well to complaints.
Review 112:Due to "heath and safety" no wash cloths supplied. Very little storage for items in bathroom. Bedroom space could have been better utilised.
Review 113:The decor was great, staff very friendly and room quite spacious.
Review 114:The décor was mainly black such as carpets, curtains, bed covers etc, a bit dull, and the lights were EU standard "energy efficient" bulbs, but gave off such a poor light level that it was difficult to see at times and impossible to read in the rooms.
Review 115:Everything, the staff in particular were excellent and gave superb levels of service.
Review 116:With the exception of the young man, the staff at reception were not professional - not what you expect in a 4-star hotel. Bedroom lighting totally inadequate. It was impossible to read in bed because of the poor lighting. Frequent malfunction of the electronic key.
Review 117:Spacious room, good restaurant and service.
Review 118:Was woken by noise from apparently the air con at 2 in the morning a loud click then 5 mins of loud humming ( same in the upgrade room they put us in following night but at 5 am and without loud humming ) as for cleanliness, both bathrooms could have done with a good clean ( or at least hovered the pubes from round the edges)
Review 119:Whilst some of the staff were very helpful and professional, it was let down by other members of staff being rude (on one occasion argumentative!) and pretty inept.
Review 120:Generally nice hotel.
Review 121:Everything about the hotel, the friendliness of the staff, especially the young girl that was serving in the dinning room on Sunday night around 7.30 and the two girls at breakfast on Monday morning.
Review 122:Dinner was charged at full price until pointed out that we had pre booked £20 worth of dining on booking.com
Review 123:Wonderful 30s decor Excellent attentive staff Meals were excellent
Review 124:I feel like I am being picky as this comment is not really worth bothering about! I presume most people will only stay a night or two so the following comment won't matter but for longer stays it may.Wardrobe hanging space is very restricted by drawers and an ironing board in the wardrobe. My only complaint!
Review 125:Reunion at the Earl after being a regular fifty years ago! Fantastic Art Deco decor, extemely friendly helpful staff and spacious well decorated rooms.Food was very nice and not overpriced.A fantastic venue for a wedding......the art deco effect is amazing!
Review 126:The bedrooms let the venue down at £94 per night for a standard room. Drinks were overpriced
Review 127:The decor was beautiful in the reception, bar and function room.
Review 128:Charged 4 star prices for 3 star service. Shower was very poor, tap in sink was too far away from basin so water everywhere except in the basin, television did not work.
Review 129:Good location for race course
Review 130:If I really was being very 'picky', I would comment on the sheets not being quite large enough to tuck under the mattress. But this was really no major problem!
Review 131:The art deco design of the hotel was superb! Very tastefully and beautifully created. Very classy! Plus as an added bonus, the staff were so genuinely lovely, friendly and helpful
Review 132:Very disappointed in rooms we where given (especially room 303) We booked the hotel in January for the races in Aug and my brothers birthday. We'd stayed here last year as the room we where given was lovely and very spacious which was an upgrade as we'd been double booked at the regent hotel. We where told the room was £130 and and we didn't have to pay any extra. But when I saw the same rooms booking it in January for £78, I snapped them up. But was totally disappointed with what we got. Room 303 was so small with a massive bed there was hardly any room to move in there. It also had no bath, just a shower room. Room 302 was a bit better but not worth £130. All together it was a bit of disappointment after what we got last year and for that reason I would not recommend this hotel, especially if they are charging them prices for what you get
Review 133:Hotel was fine. Staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of car park space. Didn't have breakfast as I thought it was included in the booking but found out it wasn't, so wasn't going to pay £13.99 each for breakfast. But stayed last year and breakfast was fine then.
Review 134:waited over an hour for cooked breakfast but was delicious. Ate in the restaurant at night time and from receiving bread the starter arrived before we had finished and the main meal arrived as the starter dishes where removed, whole meal took 45 minutes bit too quick for my liking
Review 135:friendly receptionist called ricky helped us with restaurants
Review 136:On checking the website when we returned home - superior double room - not superior. Our room was nothing like the ones advertised on their website. It was advertised as having bath - no bath but a wet room. Very dangerous flooring when wet. Very small room - not the standard of 4 star.
Review 137:Staff very friendly. Comfortable nights sleep. Good breakfast.
