Reviews for Dukes
Review 1:Single glazed windows that rattled like gell in the wind. Didn't make for the greatest night of sleep
Review 2:Food is great. A little on the pricey side. Deserts were expensive and large portions would prefer to pay less and have a sensible portion. The staff were great. Helpful anx polite.
Review 3:Small, basic, but comfortable single room, excellent for price (£39 B&B offer). Very nice included breakfast in dining room, went for the Eggs Benedict - fantastic and freshly cooked. newspaper was provided on request (If the Daily Mail counts - would have preferred an i). Very friendly and attentive staff. Good location. I did not eat in the restaurant on this occasion but from previous experience it is excellent and has good local beer and decent wine choice. A much better choice than nearby overpriced seafront hotels and B&B's.
Review 4:Nothing I didn't like really. It's a bit of a rabbit warren. Getting to room No. 8, means navigating right to the top of the hotel via winding corridors and stairs. But no biggie.
Review 5:Very pleasant stay. Warm and friendly staff, nice comfy bed and super breakfast.
Review 6:Enjoyed our stay at Dukes, lovely helpful staff and very clean room. Would have no hesitation in staying here again or recommending to friends and family.
Review 7:Fabulous location, really friendly and helpful staff, gorgeous room with brilliant facilities, reasonable price, wonderful food, amazing place to stay!!!
Review 8:The walls are thin and it was noisy but bearing in mind it is a busy and popular restaurant so a bit of noise is to be expected.
Review 9:The room was spotless and had everything you could need right down to a shopping bag and umbrella. The staff could not have been more helpful and cheerful. I am a women travelling alone and I felt very safe at all times. I did not eat so I can't comment on the breakfast however I have eaten here before and it was excellent.
Review 10:Very friendly and helpful staff, excellent location right on the sea front, very attentive to all details, superb food, what else could you possibly want!
Review 11:Bathroom facilities were a little cramped and 'plasticy' but clean and nice toiletries.
Review 12:Warm welcome and friendly staff. We ate there and it was super. There were very nice touches in the bedroom: the drinks range, umbrella etc.
Review 13:Outside noise every night until 2/3 am from young people leaving local night club. Very expensive cost of meals. £14 for a rather small lamb shank not reasonable, £12 for normal fish and chips ditto.
Review 14:Helpful and friendly staff. Short distance to walk from car park. Location near centre of town. Comfortable room with nice view.
Review 15:NOISE ! External noise along the promenade all Saturday night long ( not the hotels fault I know ) and thin walls in the bedroom so could hear other guests conversations and TV.
Review 16:Friendly and welcoming staff. Great location.
Review 17:Food is just ok. I have eaten here 4 times previously with customers. Each time at least of us has not finished their main course. Mainly due to overcooking.
Review 18:Location to the promenade. Some rooms have sea view.
Review 19:Rather poor lighting in the room, with a dim overhead light and no lighting by the desk. Otherwise no issues
Review 20:friendly welcome, with upgrade to room with sea view at no extra cost; good evening meal and breakfast; location on sea front.
Review 21:Nowhere did it say it was right next to a nightclub. Drunken brawls on the street until 5am.... Didn't sleep at all.
Review 22:Fantastic hotel, lovely staff, clean room
Review 23:Nothing
Review 24:Very helpful staff and very clean and comfortable room. Dinner and breakfast were excellent with good choices and well served. Great value, on the seafront, so ticked all my boxes.
Review 25:Staff so pleasant and helpful, facilities great ,food excellent the breakfast menu was superb ,not many hotels where you get 3 fish choices.as well as other breakfast choices.
Review 26:Bathroom very small and only a double bed, we are used too a king size.
Review 27:Hotel in very good location, very vibrant, good selection of food & drinks.
Review 28:A small single room was very reasonably priced but there was and extractor fan noise in bedroom, and music from floor below at night.
Review 29:The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. It is an excellent seafront position, with easy parking by the hotel, and instant access to the beach and town and walks. The breakfast was very good too and gluten allergies easily catered for.
Review 30:ALL the staff were incredibly polite and friendly. The food was excellent with a choice of eating in the restaurant, the conservatory, the bar or he patio that faced the seafront.
Review 31:The basic bedroom although very clean . Pillows like bricks!
Review 32:Position good ! Staff good service good. Room disappointingly basic! Food very good! In all a pleasant stay.
Review 33:Room up grade on arrival, attention to detail in the room down to the availability of take out cups for hot drinks and an umbrella if needed Food was excellent both dinner & breakfast
Review 34:Dukes is in a fantastic seafront position. Great bar and restaurant, friendly and helpful staff. My single room was cosy and comfortable. Will be staying again for sure!
Review 35:A little noisy with the windows open, as there is a large heating/air con duct on the ground below the windows, so maybe a lower score if hot weather and they need to be open.
Review 36:All staff very helpful and pleasant. Rear upper floor single room had flat screen tv, ipod station, ironing and tea making facilities, a small bucket chair, a self code locking safe and toiletries. Food was quality and quantity.
Review 37:Bit noisy at night, but to be expected in a gastro pub.
Review 38:The staff were exceptionally helpful and accommodating especially as our party contained a vegan, 2 vegetarians and 1 gluten free plus a baby! They gave us a bigger room to accommodate the travel cot and adapted the supper menu. The strapping lad behind the bar also helped me lug my massive heavy suitcase upstairs and into the store. Really impressed! Breakfast was delicious and there were even toys for the baby.
Review 39:I was kept awake with people talking and shouting outside until the early hours ,but to be fair I had already read this on one of the reviews but it didn't spoil our stay
Review 40:We thought the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Review 41:Only hiccup was we had to wait for meal because it was a Thursday's Fish Evening also the lack of parking spaces.
Review 42:The staff were so friendly and helpful on arrival, even though it was their busiest time. Ample size meals, maybe too large for some women.
Review 43:Not bad as such - just unfortunate location of room - at front, above the bar - very noisy locals early hours of morning, noisy guests in neighbouring room. Not fault of hotel though
Review 44:Very efficient friendly staff. Superb food
Review 45:room was very over priced for what we had.the toilet shower room was to small when sat on the loo your arms were touching the walls, and when washing face in sink had to open the door when bending over.and had to dry yourself in the bed room.we had a room with a sea view and when the bar was shut at 11pm,the staff was sat out the front of our room on the patio drinking, the more they drank the louder they got,so even though it was hot we had to shut the window to try and block there noise.they finally went at about 11.45.this was on both nights we stayed.
Review 46:room was very clean, bed very lush.
Review 47:Excellent Location Very friendly and helpful staff. Ismay on Reception particularly so Very helpful and friendly with our one year old too. Cosy room with character
Review 48:We had a room on the first floor just above the restaurant. That evening we had to eat at 6pm to clear the restaurant for a party... We were bothered with noise even after the party while they were moving tables to get ready for breakfast. A very small and warm room
Review 49:The room (number 12) was well equipped, immaculately clean and had a great view. However, had we been informed about its size and in particular the size of the en-suite we probably would not have booked. I am almost 6'4" and well built. the facility was not impossible to use but it was not comfortable. I would not book again on this basis. I strongly recommend that your advertising should warn that these rooms are " bijou" and for the smaller than average visitor.
Review 50:Staff really friendly, up beat and helpful. Full Marks. Full Marks also for breakfast.
Review 51:Noisy at night with people from the nightclub opposite.
Review 52:My daughter's room smelt very smokey. The staff were excellent...gave her airfreshner and a reduction in price. Hotel situated in centre of Sidmouth,,,,excellent.
Review 53:If I was being very picky shower could have been a bit better more powerful
Review 54:Great staff very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast selection and quality was very good. Large bedroom with good view
Review 55:Only thing car park a bit tight.
Review 56:Great location and staff were excellent so smiley and friendly Although extremely busy with food orders when checked in. Looked after my early start with a breakfast tray so nice.
Review 57:Our room was very small, with what felt like a cupboard for a shower! But it was immaculately clean, and we enjoyed the sea view.
Review 58:Very friendly and helpful staff; super-efficient breakfast service with tasty choices. Small touches made a difference: wooden blocks with your room number on tables, so you weren't wandering round second-guessing where to sit. Loved the teapots with mis-matched lids and the mosaic mirrors in the dining room. But best of all, location, location, location: great sea views, but quiet rooms, too.
Review 59:Dukes is in a great position on the seafront. Our evening meal and breakfast were excellent, i am glad we had phoned to reserve a table before our stay as they were fully booked, and all the staff were very helpful.
Review 60:Location, friendliness, relaxed atmosphere. Little touches like extra milk available on bookcase, blankets for sitting out on cool evenings. Good food
Review 61:We didn't have a 'bad' experience, but I think the breakfastwas average rather than good. Coffee weak, toast under toasted and foodbland, esp the full english. Why does the picture on the website notreflect true frontage of hotel with seating area infront - slightlydeceptive impression!
Review 62:The staff were helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and the viewwas nice. The bed was comfortable too.
Review 63:Staff were very friendly, and very helpful. The restaurant food is second to none with excellent choice and presentation. We will be returning
Review 64:very noisy at night and in the morning with people walking above you Dinner menu was disappointing too much deep fried food and heavy puddings
Review 65:Great location friendly staff and nice breakfast
Review 66:It was so warm at night my wife took the duvet cover off the duvet In order that we could use just the cover. The duvet was filthy ,covered in stains.although we left it there in plain view it was not replaced. Not good.m
Review 67:Our bedroom location
Review 68:The room was perfectly adequate, and of a generous size. Some more thought could have been given to the furniture, which was unimaginative and eclectic. Despite that, we would happily stay in the hotel again if we were in the area
Review 69:Very clean and comfortable, in an excellent position. Our room enjoyed a superb view over the bay. We had dinner at Dukes. A limited menu, but a well cooked and memorable meal.
Review 70:English Breakfast was good except the eggs benedict was disappointing.
Review 71:Very comfortable room if a little on the small side. Rooms are tastefully decorated and the bed extremely comfortable.
Review 72:Convenient location. Very well staffed with friendly helpful people. Excellent choice for breakfast menu. Well equipped compact bedrooms. Cosy bar area and good outside space.
Review 73:There was nothing about this hotel that we disliked.
Review 74:Lovely room with sea view. Very well decorated and eqipped. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient
Review 75:Expensive. Bedroom walls too thin. Could hear neighbours and woken by baby crying at 5.30am. Food mediocre. Breakfast sausage and bacon undercooked.
Review 76:Location of hotel. Central for shops and beach. Wonderful view of the sea. Good wifi. Bar and lounge area. Helpful staff
Review 77:I stayed for one night, midweek, at Dukes. I was also here for one night exactly a year ago and this time round the receptionist greeted me with "welcome back" - which I thought was a nice touch! All of the staff were brilliant, very courteous and also hard working - excellent customer service. I didn't have food in the evening because I was back too late but I had a good pint of local real ale and a bottle of excellent locally brewed strawberry cider in the bar. Plenty of tea and coffee for my room, shower was good and a nice view of the sea. Breakfast was very good too.
Review 78:We stayed for a week and our beds were changed every day and the bathroom was cleaned every day. The only complainted we had was that the floor was not hoovered at all during our stay.
Review 79:The staff were really friendly and helpful at all times. It was was very clean and the food was good.
Review 80:small ensuite
Review 81:Arrived at hotel and staff carried bags to room. 'Coffee Station' on the first floor where you can replenish your room. Staff really, really effiecent and helpful
Review 82:WiFi very slow, not too much parking first come first served, restaurant very busy so very difficult to get a table for evening meal
Review 83:Lovely location, staff very accommodating, food really nice
Review 84:The room was tiny, just edged around the bed and an arm chair but it felt cramped. I wasn't too bothered but was the one thing I didn't like.
Review 85:Very good food and the sea view. All the staff were chatty and friendly. One carried my suitcase up 2 floors when I arrived.
Review 86:Saturday night - disturbed sleep for 45 mins when the nightclub next door emptied at 3am. Not Dukes' fault, but bear in mind if staying Saturdays
Review 87:Well located, good value
Review 88:Room 6 whilst fabulous was a bit noisey - could hear family above. We're probably rather spoilt but like decent pillows - a small investment that would make guests like us, very happy :-)
Review 89:Great staff, all keen to make out time special. Love the location, especially looking out to sea, hearing the surf at night. Fab food, love the fish medley - light, delicious and perfect after Durassic walk.
Review 90:Breakfast was dire .... Bacon very fatty and raw sausages .... Such a shame. Dinner was also pretty average with the steak not good at all.
Review 91:Easy and convenient for walking, socialising and restaurants etc
Review 92:Nothing it was all brilliant
Review 93:We liked everything and nothing was too much trouble, everything was excellent and have already recommended it to friends and family. Well worth a stay, Brilliant absolutely brilliant.
Review 94:Although room had a sea view, this overlooked the outside bar area, which was noisy late in the evening, the noise from there being replaced by seagulls early in the morning. Unable to leave window slightly open, which we would do generally.
Review 95:Clean facilities and friendly staff, though breakfast waitress seemed somewhat disorganised.
Review 96:Only a minor criticism: we were in room 5 which was an adequate size but it contained too much furniture which restricted movement and being able to use mirrors and access the wardrobe.
Review 97:Beds very comfortable, food excellent, staff friendly and helpful, good value, clean and well looked after.
Review 98:No information given about meals and facilities, the menu was a sheet of tatty A4, not told there was info on both sides, not much for veggies, not told food could be served in bar. Seagulls banging on window and sqwarking all day and night.
Review 99:Clean room, quite a few extras, books, biscuits, water and an umbrella!
Review 100:There was a lot of noise from a local nightclub
Review 101:The breakfast was fresh and hot and the staff were friendly. The room was small but clean and comfortable.
Review 102:Staff weren't very friendly to start with. While dining, a waitress started to move table and chairs very noisily. When I showed my concern, I was told that she had to get the table ready for a large party on her own and carried on dragging tables and chairs across the floor during our dining. At breakfast, coffee cups were picked up and refilled without using the saucer. The veggie breakfast was nice but could have had a better veggie sausage. In all, the staff were ok but could do with more customer service training.
Review 103:Nice room, comfy bed. Excellent menu
Review 104:can be a little noisy from people leaving the nightclub close by, but would definitely stay again
Review 105:good all round hotel being centrally located to beach, shops and restaurants great patio area for siting outside, breakfast served until 9.30am
Review 106:No lift (which we did know) Parking near the hotel was very difficult which was stressful as there were some less mobile people in our group and priority parking is not available for those staying. Also no guests bar so difficult to have a comfortable drink in the place we were staying.
Review 107:Good location, nice place, very friendly staff.
Review 108:in the seating are of the bar you had to book a table - which was small anyway - this was even if you were not staying there - so quite often you ended up with a drink and know were to sit and enjoy. One member of management was very rude. Bed not comfortable and pillows flat.
Review 109:The food was good - and most of the staff lovely
Review 110:No hot water for shower in the morning despite being fine the previous evening. Anything to do with the clocks going forward?
Review 111:"Olde Worlde" and quirky room. Staff amazing!
Review 112:A gem of a location overlooking the sea. The breakfast was excellent. The dinner menu was great value for money and couldn't be bettered in any restaurant. It was our first visit but it was full of guests who had been on several stays previously. So guess the standard has been high for some time.
Review 113:Erm.... If I had to mention something it would be the "cosy" bathroom, but... That would be it.
Review 114:Friendly helpful staff, comfortable beds, fabulous breakfast.
Review 115:We had a warm welcome and bags carried and kindly shown to our room Menu good and breakfast was excellent. All staff created a happy atmosphere and extremely helpful
Review 116:We would have liked more comfortable seating in the public areas but understand that this was not possible as the hotel needed to maximize space. Overall there was nothing we did not like :)
Review 117:Loved the location, the friendly staff and the rooms were clean and comfortable. One of the rooms was up a few flights of stairs which my mother found difficult. We asked if this could be changed and the staff could not have been more helpful. She ended up in a bigger room with a sea view, wonderful :)
Review 118:staff were friendly, breakfast was very hot and there was a good selection. would be good to have had the opportunity to have been able to have an evening meal in the hotel but they were fully booked.
Review 119:Can't find any fault although perhaps parking nearby might be an issue in peak season.
Review 120:Had a weekend break here off season in March. Lovely place - room very comfortable with sea view, food excellent and seemed the most popular place in Sidmouth to eat. Staff really friendly and helpful - would recommend to anyone visiting this part of Devon!
Review 121:Did not know there were quite so many stairs to climb found that a bit difficult and the bedroom was on the small side although we are not big people the ensuite was also on the small side parking also difficult
Review 122:The food was excellent
Review 123:The only negative comment we would make is that the shower was not very powerful and very difficult to get the water temperature right.
Review 124:The hotel is in a good position. Our room was large, comfortable and well furnished. Dinner and breakfast were excellent, and all the staff were delightful.
Review 125:That we had nt booked for longer!
Review 126:Location and friendliness of staff, nothing too much trouble. Lovely food in restaurant . Also great atmosphere in bar
Review 127:I was in a single room ,, not really enough plug sockets for today's technology,,so had tv.kettle. Phone and I pad ...
Review 128:Food was very good ,, staff always welcoming Good choice of basic wines
Review 129:Nearby venue had thumping music until 2 am, followed by noisy revelers in the street below, Friday and Saturday night. Possibly made worse by location of our room (9) to the rear of the hotel. Not fault of hotel, but did disturb our sleep.
Review 130:Room clean and comfortable if a little small. Main meals looked good and were obviously popular. As attending a wedding event did not avail ourselves of them. Excellent breakfast however, friendly and attentive staff.
Review 131:Everything was good . The staff smiled and were friendly. It was clean and the breakfast was very good . We also had a meal in the evening which was lovely as well. It was central but right on the seafront
