Reviews for Grand St Leger Hotel
Review 1:Noise from industrial extractor fan (kitchen?) could be heard in room late night early morning
Review 2:Friendly staff Lovely room Fab lovation for racecourse
Review 3:View from window was a big rubble dump but they are going to build a new hotel on it and it didn't bother us!
Review 4:Stayed there as went to the racers which it is very close to. Nice walk into town.helpful staff. Nice breakfast!
Review 5:Sour milk at breakfast. Was quickly rectified on complaint but staff did not think to proactively check all the milk out on tables - each table had to complain individually.
Review 6:Nice, friendly clean and convenient.
Review 7:The dust in the room and residue still in the bath. A slight crack on the toilet seat. We was also charged twice for our stay by the man at reception. Incompetence.
Review 8:Loved the deluxe room we stayed in, brillianf spa bath and very comfy bed.
Review 9:Pillows flat...asked for extra pillows an even 3 pillows was not adequate...I only have 1 pillow at home! Breakfast...were told they had run out of sausages (this was only halfway through the breakfast session) the manager had to go and buy some more. Bacon was just a few pieces not even a whole rasher. Black pudding was missed off the plate. Very poor and not worth £125 for one night. Hopefully they will address these comments.
Review 10:Liked the location as we were attending a function at the racecourse.
Review 11:No offer on check in to help with suitcase to top floor; bearing in mind aged 60+ and no lift then in darkness when reached accommodation as light bulbs had gone. The sink stopper was difficult to open for water egress after use.
Review 12:Comfortable and clean room and other communal areas of the hotel very nice.
Review 13:The hotel is looking a little jaded and in a 80s time warp which is a shame. The car park is also difficult to access as due to building works at the back.
Review 14:The staff are lovely, friendly and most helpful. I dined on my own and the food was very good with speedy service.
Review 15:Four poster bed was very uncomfortable so very achy next day. Need thicker mattresses.
Review 16:Great staff, lovely room and en suite. Huge jacuzzi bath with shower. Meal was delicious.
Review 17:Basic facilities, uncomfortable beds, milk off at breakfast and when pointed out, not all jugs were changed! Ready for a refurb
Review 18:Friendly staff, convenient location and clean Resident bar open until late
Review 19:Tired décor Menu issues - number of items not available - cook did not know all ingredients Loud Music form bar/foyer
Review 20:Large bedroom Excellent position for races
Review 21:Restaurant menu was limited. Frontage is tired and back is very much 'a work in progress'. Hotel could do with a thorough upgrade. However, all in all a good stay
Review 22:Staff were excellent. Bev and Jacob went to great lengths to find us a good restaurant on a busy Saturday night - they did that; booked it and gave us exact directions. Restaurant in town was excellent. other staff were also very helpful.
Review 23:Very friendly and pleasant staff, excellent breakfast. Tea making facilities in room , always a must for that early morning cuppa ! Very comfortable bed with nice clean linen.
Review 24:It's a bit of a building site currently, with a big extension planned. The 'grandeur' is looking a little faded at present. Our room was small. A staff member woke us with a phone call at 07.10, apparently called the wrong number!!!
Review 25:Clean and comfortable
Review 26:Nosy kitchen extractor fan, however staff did turn it off when approached. Someone put their room tab on our account, maybe system needs addressing.
Review 27:Close and convenience Doncaster race course. Comfortable well run coaching hotel.
Review 28:Paid £139 for large double room with spa bath on a Fri for a race meeting Lovely large room with the bath But on departure we noticed a few things Such a pity that it clearly doesn't get cleaned thoroughly Carpet hadn't been hoovered The linen was fresh but the actual quilt had blood stains on it Every ledge was dusty The window frames were full of black mould Ear plugs were provided as room was at front but the curtains weren't black out and let all the street light in We are not picky travellers and I don't go looking for things to complain Just expected better standards Shame
Review 29:Good location for the racecourse Friendly staff
Review 30:I ARRIVED ON FOOT AND THE CROSSINGS BY THE ROUNDABOUT HAD NO PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS OR UNDERPASS SO YOU HAD TO BATTLE TRAFFIC..NOT A PROBLEM IF YOU ARRIVED BY CAR. A BUS STOP OUTSIDE BUT IF YOU WANTED TO CATCH A BUS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION YOU STILL HAD THE TRAFFIC.NOTWITHSTANDING THIS I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY AGAIN.
Review 31:STAFF VERY POLITE AND HELPFUL room of a high standard and clean
Review 32:There was no warm bedding and there was no robes to where and no soap in the bathroom and the noise from other gusers early hours in a morning was erendouse as I was the last room near the exit and the telephone to ring reception was broken for the money I paid it was very poor I useally stay at Mount pleasent and pay 90 for my room with breakfast I will be asking for a free re stay with you as I think that's the least you can do or refund my money
Review 33:Reception lady not helpful at all and called up before booking room on internet to be told she had no rooms left but then went online and you had 4 rooms avalible so we booked we stayed at ledger for valentines last year and thought it was very nice very different stay on wednesday evening dont think the receptionist wanted to get out of her chair our room was freezing our special requests was not met and the deco was very damp and smelly my partner wish for me not to complain for our money back but i wish i did now.So overall was NOT worth the overnight fee of 85.00
Review 34:Breakfast
Review 35:The main problem was that there was no lift to the upper floors. The reason given was that the was classified as a grade 2 building. As a retired surveyor I do not accept that this should exclude the provision of disabled facilities'.
Review 36:very disappointing bad location bad food would definitely not go back
Review 37:The staff tried to apologise for the building works and it should be made clear that this is on a busy road and next to a large building site BEFORE customers book manager did reduce the bill in the circumstances
Review 38:Room 100 is small for the room price and the view from the window was awful just complete rubble all over, had to open window as was too warm having done this to let cool air in it also allowed lots of flys to enter our room
Review 39:Location to race course and fairly close to town centre. Staff where polite and did state there was a wedding party going on. This did not deter us but I did think the music would of stopped before 2am.
Review 40:the matresses need re newing.the paintwork needs alot of attention
Review 41:staff were excellent friendly and polite, the food was lovely, the bed was not comfortable but everywhere was very clean
Review 42:We had a running toilet cistern which ran all night however it did spoil the stay because every thing else was spot on
Review 43:Friendly staff who were keen to make us comfortable. Good value for money stay. Food in restaurant was excellent pricey but top notch
Review 44:New building work going on at rear of hotel but was never a real problem even though my room was facing it
Review 45:The cleanliness and freindliness of the staff. With 24hr bar
Review 46:Chef was late for breakfast service, which made us late. Bed was too soft, and curtains let in too much light leading to poor sleep
Review 47:Bathroom was very nice
Review 48:One of the beds was too hard, but on mentioning it to the house keeper, it was exchanged for a soft one within minutes. All staff were very pleasant. Would recommend.
Review 49:rooms far too hot i mean unreal hot and you cant sleep. most windows dont open anywhere in hotel. building old and no investment bedrooms out of the past
Review 50:breakfast
Review 51:If your room is at the front the road noise can be heard, however not a big issue.
Review 52:Great location near the racecourse, and only a mile from town centre. Staff where very helpful, Great Burger in the bar !!
Review 53:Didn't get much sleep due to the bed been awfull very hard and lumpy and not very big. Woke up with back ach from what sleep I did get . Need to invest in new mattress .
Review 54:Hotel clean and staff friendly.breaskfast very nice ,and near to where we wanted to be.
Review 55:This hotel was just opposite the racecourse where our convention was being held, the room was refurbished, the bed comfy, huge flatscreen tv, full size kettle (with mugs), complimentary earplugs (in case the traffic was noisy), ample storage, comfy chairs, iron & irning board as well as trouser press in the room, complimentary toiletries, clean linen daily, the food was exceptional and the staff went out of their way to help with our queries.
Review 56:Fire doors occasionally wedged open, noisy residents but only up to midnight (earplugs provided, thankfully), demolition site to rear, but difficult to see what hotel can do about that.
Review 57:Close to racecourse, Friendly, helpful staff, who did everything they could to make the stay pleasant, good food, comfortable, spacious room. Buzzy atmosphere.
Review 58:Nothing
Review 59:Everything, this is my style of hotel. Traditional with old charm. Staff did there job in regards to making me feel welcome. My room was perfect, not much of a view but I didn't need a view.
Review 60:Breakfast was awful, dont even know how to cook hash browns, had paid for breakfast on second day but left early and had breakfast elsewhere.Hotel is overpriced, and would I stay here again,a deffo no.
Review 61:Room at front on busy road. Noisy and warm at night as window could not be left open. Also strange smell in bathroom. Other odd attention to detail issues found.
Review 62:Ideal position opposite racecourse where event we attended was. Receptionist, possibly manageress, was friendly and helpful. Limited parking which was also useful
Review 63:Same menu 3 nights running, same Soup of the Day 3 nights running. Plugging in the kettle or mobile 'phone charger underneath the dressing table. Operating a kettle on the floor1
Review 64:The staff were absolutely great - kind, courteous, willing and prompt with their service. Only problem was with Saturday evening meal - plates were not cleared away for ages and no desert menu was offered.
Review 65:Some of the general areas need an upgrade. Somewhat noisy at front of hotel. Building in progress at rear but did not impinge on hotel facilities. Improved aircon would be helpful.
Review 66:Excellent breakfast. Very helpful staff
Review 67:Would have liked a lift up to the second floor.
Review 68:Staff were helpful and friendly. Room was clean and comfortable with free wi-fi.had an enjoyable evening meal and breakfast.
Review 69:The menu had very little variety The room was small and bed was very hard the back of the hotel is like a demolition yard Breakfast was late starting and not very good
Review 70:The position of the hotel is superb,2mins from the racecourse and just £5 by cab into Doncaster town centre. Also the staff were top notch and very helpfull
Review 71:Had to park on the main road. Overpriced No breakfast bowls No tongs to self serve bread Yoghurts left on table not chilled
Review 72:It was close to racecourse.
Review 73:Facilities in our room could have been better, eg: no drawer space for clothing, bath plug chain broken, pillows too small, no fire notice.
Review 74:Staff were excellent - nothing too much trouble Polite, cheerful and obviously enjoying their jobs. Food good.
Review 75:If you wanted lunch it couldn't be supplied for a few hours becausethere was a wedding on. Unfortunately there was not another shop, pub orrestaurant close by except a fish and chip shop 500m down the road whichwas not an option in the rainy Yorkshire weather. No facilities or services nearby except the racetrack but if you were staying for the races better to stay in town and spend a fiver in a taxi to the races.
Review 76:Breakfast Good. Rooms clean and tidy. Bar service ok.
Review 77:The food was awful and although requests made to the staff did eventually get a response there was a kind of reluctance, I felt they were trying to brush you off with excuses.
Review 78:Lovely comfortable bed. Great to have a air conditioning fan in the room too. The management made efforts to give you a good nights sleep
Review 79:From outside the building looks a little unsightly and too be fair it's a little outdated on the interiors. The room was clean and had all your needed for a one night stay. What made the place was the staff - super friendly and helping. They totally make the place.
Review 80:It was very dirty on arrival at 7pm and still the same at 9am the next morning .the resturant closed at 7.45!!!! The window had to be propped open with a wine bucket,
Review 81:It was close to the racecourse .
Review 82:Positioned next to an extremely busy roundabout, the beer garden was situated right next to the main road, not the most tranquil of beer gardens :-)
Review 83:Nice clean friendly hotel,
Review 84:We stayed in Room 110 which, when we stayed, had the worst ever double bed - I've had better nights camping, and sleeping on terra firma! Hopefully, after mentioning the 4-inch (10cm) approx thick foam mattress on a divan base which had two sheets of bent board for the mattress to lie on, there'll be a proper, new mattress in situ! Such a shame, really, as the hotel is generally value for money.
Review 85:All staff were friendly and helpful. The Grade 2 listed hotel combines original features with old/modern decor and furniture. It's just across the road from Doncaster racecourse. Nothing else much within handy walking distance. But the hotel with bar, reasonably comfy seating and decent restaurant menu compensated. We'd probably stay again if going to the races. But would check the bed first !
Review 86:it is just off a roundabout so traffic noise is audible however they provide you with ear plugs for light sleepers.
Review 87:Ideal location for work. Welcoming staff, comfortable room.
Review 88:Firstly, I didn't like a man (I presume cleaner) walking straight into my room when I was standing there in my underwear!! I would have expected a full refund but I didn't have time. There was no cappuccino and the wine was horrible! The windows rattled in the wind all night long.
Review 89:The room was immaculately clean and the wifi was almost perfect! The bathroom was lovely and there were plenty of towels. The dinner was tasty although the steak was tough and definitely not rare!
Review 90:There's a huge road next to the hotel and until the new buildings are built, all rooms face the road. It was very loud and disturbed the sleep significantly. Also, the internet sucked. No such thing as connecting in the room, so we had to stand in the hallway for urgent email communication.
Review 91:Room was nice and looked newly renovated, spacious, and clean.
Review 92:View of the demolition site at the rear; and the hotel needs double glazing to drown out the traffic noise.
Review 93:Just about everything, staff were friendly and helpful, evening meal was excellent and good value for money.
Review 94:The road noise, due to the age of the building apparently they can not fit double glazing and provide earplugs. Unfortunately i needed to hear my alarm.
Review 95:The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was great and breakfast a wide selection. The power shower everything but the noise.
Review 96:Room way too hot on main road so opening the window gave us noise from the traffic. Some of the room very dated Cleanliness was poor to avarage in areas
Review 97:The bathroom
Review 98:Hotel and its surround are obviously in process of upgrading and rear of hotel is a building site. This was not off putting for us but could be for some.
Review 99:Good choice menu and food was well presented and very tasty. Staff were always pleasant and position of hotel was well suited for our purpose of walking into town and going to the races the following day.
Review 100:At present the stables which were behind the hotel have been reduced to a pile of rubble so view from window is not too good at the moment. Very tight getting into the car park.
Review 101:Comfortable, clean room. As well as the racecourse the hotel is convenient for the shopping and leisure of the Lakeside complex and also not too far from the football stadium.
Review 102:Paid extar for jacuzzi bath which was mucky and not the style as shown In the pictures the floors in the room were also mucky and the breakfast was poor. was an ok hotel but not worth the £100 we paid for the night and it should have at least been clean
Review 103:The staff were quite friendly
Review 104:The matress protector rustled a lot each time we turned over in the night!
Review 105:The staff are incredibly friendly without being intrusive. Second time we've stayed here and we like it more and more!
Review 106:Parking area not good for big cars.Generally the hotel looks shabby and room could have been cleaner. To use the kettle one had to crawl under the TV table to plug it in! Not easy for older knees!
Review 107:The food was very good indeed and staff friendly and helpful.
Review 108:The pillows could do with upgrading! Breakfast was "interesting" and a little disorganised.
Review 109:Very happy with the room, large, clean and warm. Staff were friendly.
Review 110:No toilet paper in hotel room, unacceptable, breakfast service finishing before the breakfast period is over. Meaning we didn't get the breakfast we had paid for
Review 111:The bed
Review 112:we came to stay here as we were Going to see Go West, hotel was easy to find, and the staff staff were very helpful. Close to the town centre about 10 min walk and rooms clean and cosy. Would recommend and also stay here again if in the area
Review 113:Only issue was an old red wine stain on our duvet, but staff rectified the issue instantly. Cant ask for better service than that!
Review 114:Hotel restaurant served some of the best breakfasts and dinners we've ever had! Staff very attentive and friendly, rooms clean with good tea making facilities, no road noise and a huge tv!
Review 115:As we were later down for breakfast the service was not as good - there was a lack of choice and things hadn't been refilled.
Review 116:The receptionist was so lovely and really made us welcome.
Review 117:Only negative was the housekeeping - the room was clean, but loo roll & hand towels not replaced and no matress or pillow protectors
Review 118:Staff were welcoming and professional. The room was very clean and the bathroom had a great large shower. Breakfast was excellent, decent produce had been used which makes such a difference!
Review 119:Lovely historic hotel with updated rooms, comfortable beds and great food. Lovely touch was notice in room apologizing for view of building work behind and artist impression of new extensions to hotel.
Review 120:Large area out the back of hotel has been demolished and there was an artists impression in the bedroom of what the new development will look like. there appears to be a very exciting development in prospect. However, in the interim, the place feels rather tired and lacking any former grandeur. Receptionist was welcoming and friendly and my room was quietly located at the rear of the hotel.
Review 121:Views from room at rear of hotel were of a demolition site though no work was going on and no disturbance to my stay
Review 122:Friendly staff and clean comfortable room with free WiFi with restaurant providing a limited menu of what proved to be great food. Just what was required
Review 123:First room no heating, second room ok. Very little and awkward parking. Food average.
Review 124:Staff friendly and accommodating, wifi good, second room comfortable.
Review 125:The room was lovely with a lovely big bath an shower only downside was the release didn't work properly on the bath, breakfast a bit poor for the price too and you have to pay card which annoyed me.
Review 126:Dirty Carpets windows not double glazed letting copious amounts of COLD and NOISE in, you could see your breath in the room even with the radiator on FULL. 42" TV advertised was WONKY, at least 12 years old and had a very poor picture
Review 127:Bed was comfortable
Review 128:Original room on first floor was cold due to two lots of original single glazed sash windows. Even though radiators were on, very Cold.
Review 129:Breakfast and dinner lovely Clean room and bathroom Excellent customer service - when I asked for a heater as I was cold,I was upgraded with no fuss to much warmer room on floor two. Employees on reception and in dining room were very courteous and friendly.
Review 130:Everything was great from arriving and booking in early to getting dinner a bit earlier so we could go to a show. The staff went way over their normal service to help. An excellent experience. Thank you
Review 131:Very dated interior. Couldn't get a quick drink because of a Christmas function
Review 132:Friendly helpful staff, and the quirky view of "building rubble" from my bedroom window! Clean bathroom is always a winner.
Review 133:Room was a bit draughty and cold for me. No extra blankets in the room. Hairdryer in room didn't work but had brought my own so was ok.
Review 134:Very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent room service if you didn't want to dine in dining room. Clean and spacious bathroom with big bath and shower. Generally a nice and pleasant hotel to stay in.
Review 135:Unfortunately the reason we wouldn't choose to stay here again is simply due to the standard of the food which was poor at both dinner and breakfast. I was pleased to find that there were further vegetarian options other than those listed on the dinner menu - one starter (garlic mushrooms) and one main (mushroom risotto). These turned out to be a further mushroom option (mushroom stroganoff), or a tomato and mozarello flan with a rocket and parmesan salad. I chose the latter. What arrived was a square of puff pastry with a tomato sliced onto it, melted mozarello abd masses of balsamic drizzled over, presented on top of mixed salad leaves (now hot and wilted by the puff pastry, which was a flat, wet, slimy sheet and inedible). 'New' potatoes were clearly pre-cooked and dry. My partner had a '28 day matured Angus' steak which was tasteless and devoid of any juices. Not unsurprisingly, there were only 2 other people dining during the time it took us to eat what we could salvage and leave. It was our first visit and I had pre-booked dinner as the stay was part of my Christmas present to my partner. I wished I hadn't!
Review 136:I was impressed by the helpfulness of the staff from pre-booking, when I had a couple of queries which were speedily and fully answered, to the cheerful, friendly attitude of the waitress at breakfast. The hotel is ideally placed for Doncaster racecourse and our room (superior double) was clean, big and light with views out to the front of the hotel (road and roundabout). The bathroom was also spacious and warm with spa bath.
