Reviews for The Salty Monk
Review 1:There is nothing to dislike.
Review 2:Fantastic food, brilliant service, room was lovely with everything we needed, extra touches like fresh milk, home made biscuits even a treat for the dog made it all that bit more special. Fantastic breakfast nice to see a wider range of choices, such as fish etc. rather than the usual, which was all of a very high quality
Review 3:We were on the second floor where on second morning the water supply went down to a dribble. Apparently, the pump had failed, so no proper washing facilities second morning!.......no compensation!
Review 4:Breakfast and dinners were excellent. Staff also excellent. Room very comfortable.
Review 5:Nothing much - just that the bed was a little soft for us and also the room was hot for us, even though we opened the windows and made sure the heating was off. This affected our sleep, but it did not spoil the overall stay.
Review 6:The staff are a delight - nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make sure that our stay was perfect.
Review 7:Would have prefered dinner choices to be individually priced, rather than a total charge of £45 for three courses
Review 8:Excellent food & presentation Staff very attentive Beautiful building, the character of which has been maintained
Review 9:Hot tub extra and high cost Notes in room - suggesting we might steal the shampoo or soap ! Location was on a busy, noisy road
Review 10:Friendly staff Very comfortable room Very clean Good breakfast
Review 11:Having to leave to come home.....we will most certainly be spending another holiday at the Salty Monk
Review 12:Very friendly staff nothing was too much trouble. Beautiful comfortable bedroom Breakfast was delicious as was the dinner. Lots of special little touches which made our stay memorable.
Review 13:Only having two nights booked (I could eat that breakfast all week long).
Review 14:Incredibly helpful staff, making life with our baby as easy as it could possibly be. Friendly welcome, an extra level of service above and beyond what you normally get without seeming pretentiously 'boutique'.
Review 15:that we didnt stay longer !
Review 16:everything - breakfast was excellent - as was the Taster menu , family run small hotel, definitely would go back - easy walk to Sidmouth along the Byes - excellent short break
Review 17:The accommodation was lovely, lots of thoughtful personal touches that made it special. We ate in the restaurant and we were very impressed with the standard of food, as a vegetarian l don't often have a choice and it was nice to discuss the menu with Annette.
Review 18:Had no normal bar, no real coke, no normal beer just local produced drinks, no good if you had children, asked to use hot tub was told they needed an hours notice. Food was fantastic but feel they wanted to get shot of you as soon as it got to 11pm
Review 19:Evening meal was fantastic, breakfast ok
Review 20:Nothing! It was a 10 out of 10!
Review 21:It was a home away from home. Annete & Andy make a formidable team along with their 2 sons. Nothing is too much for them to make you feel welcome!
Review 22:Quite expensive charged £10 for water and soft drinks only with meal!
Review 23:Known for its food this is the reason I booked and ate one night in the Bistro it was fully booked for the Saturday. A nice tasty meal and the breakfast was lovely too including home made sausage and granola. Nice touches like homemade cookies in the room with a jar of sweets.
Review 24:The room was fantastic the bed large and very comfortable, and the bath large and luxurious xxxxx. Food superb. But the the whole visit was made by Annette the owner, so friendly so professional.
Review 25:Nothing
Review 26:We chose this hotel mainly because of the excellent past reviews and we were not disappointed in any way. The hotel itself is lovely - comfortable and beautifully decorated, and the owners are delightful and friendly. We only stayed one night, but dinner in the evening was delicious and beautifully presented, and breakfast was equally excellent. There are other less expensive hotels in the area, but we certainly felt we had good value for money.
Review 27:exerlent location for touring the area. Comfy rooms and beds and very friendly and competent staff. The restaurant is fantastic with 5 stars meals and wines. Initially had a problem with the internet but was fixed very quickly
Review 28:Unable to control heat in the room at night and being on the ground floor did not feel comfortable to leave the windows fully open
Review 29:Really first class food and service
Review 30:Our stay at The Salty Monk was excellent and the attention to detail was superb , went that little extra with everything they did. Best place we have stayed in , in a long time.
Review 31:Friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Food was fantastic as were the herbal teas and everything homemade. Hot tub and sauna exceptional on a cold, wet February Sunday.
Review 32:Our fabulous room is just above the brasserie and every word could be heard coming up through the space by the radiator. BUT it is all quiet by 11 pm so not a problem for us .
Review 33:friendly owners ,great food, lovely room with great toiletries ,home made biscuits, jelly babies(!!) and fantastic tempura bed. Great place to stay, with a nice pub 100metres away. Well done
Review 34:Tiny improvements would be to have a bedside lamp for reading purposes. Larger TV.
Review 35:Upon arrival the service was first class which contunued throughout our stay. The Salty Monk should be very proud of their achievements. We stayed in the Lavender Suite which I would highly recommend to anyone. The highlights for me was that the room was scrupulously clean with a bath to die for. We only had breakfast on two occasions but wow those scrambled eggs were something else! The location was a great mix of countryside with easy access to the coast. I loved it, I will be back again. A very pleased customer.
Review 36:Bed was too soft for me, but that's a personal preference of course..
Review 37:Lots of nice individual touches which show you are in a tasteful well run establishment. Beautiful food, breakfast is not to be missed. Attentive hosts. Rooms well presented and very clean.
Review 38:We arrived for our booking and it wasn't booked. Had to turn round and go home. Terrible service from booking.com they just don't take calls at all and don't reply to email!!
Review 39:Don't us this site!
Review 40:The light in our bathroom stayed on rather a long time after the auto-switch on, not that you would want to be plunged into darkness when in the bathroom, of course , but after exiting the light and fan stayed on for a good 20 minutes- you can switch off the fan, though.
Review 41:Pretty much everything about the place ; the owners aim for select and special produce, no brand leaders here- just lovely quality, tasty produce, and terrific quality fixtures , furniture, and bathroom fitments were top-quality too. The Wine List is a great read for vinophiles like me, there are few venues that keep such a good range of half-bottles, very handy for those who like to have different wines with each course- the range of wines by the glass is MUCH more generous than most places . The establishment is good value for money- good food and drink should not be cheap , or it cannot be sustained.
Review 42:Everything. Excellent food wine accommodation and service. It is a beautiful family run hotel. We walked into Sidmouth enjoyed the seaside and then returned to the beautiful comfortable Salty Monk to an excellent dinner.
Review 43:Our 3 day stay at the Salty Monk was perfect, we stayed in the Heather Room which was very nice, clean and comfortable it also had a little court yard with a table and chairs where we could sit and relax. The breakfast and evening meals were excellent. Thank you Andy and Annette.
Review 44:I wish it was a bit cheaper! But it was worth what we paid.
Review 45:Wonderfully warm welcome, a beautiful room and very comfortable bed. The whole place was decorated to a high standard, very clean and attractive. The food was good, especially the afternoon tea, with most things being home made and/or locally sourced.

Review 94:Road noise is a minor irritant
Review 95:Great facilities and food, very professional and friendly staff.
Review 96:Staff were excellent and very friendly. Food was well presented and full of flavour
Review 97:Although the food and wine in the restaurant was excellent, I think it was a little expensive.
Review 98:The room, restaurant and the general setting is excellent in our opinion. The staff were attentive and more than ready to account for our needs. The experience at the Salty Monk was excellent overall. We will definitely come back.
Review 99:1 very minor point - would have liked a shower as well as spa bath.
Review 100:The mini suite was lovely - quiet and private and adjacent to the pretty gardens. Food excellent and good wine list.
Review 101:The time went so fast.
Review 102:Relaxed, comfortable spaces in all areas of the easily found hotel. Very helpful staff, good food with a wide selection of wines. Situated in the town of Sidmouth with a very pleasant walk to the beach along side the river Sid, offering excellent range of shops bars and hotels for the classic "Devon" cream tea. Would revisit if asked.
Review 103:Larger choice of the bar menu would be nice.
Review 104:Welcome, comfort, great food, cleanliness, great detail and thoughtful extras in the room. A very rare experience highly recommended.
Review 105:I liked everything about the Salty Monk. We were warmly greeted into this first class establishment. The beds were extremely comfortable and the bathroom toiletries organic and wonderful. We had dinner in the Brasserie which was cooked freshly and of exceptional quality.
Review 106:nothing !
Review 107:We loved the attention to detail - the stylish décor and soft furnishings. Our bed was very comfortable - nice touch was the decanter of sherry and superb quality shower gels etc. Both the shower and bath were pretty amazing too.
Review 108:The food was amazing!!! Delicious and beautifully presented in the cozy restaurant. The owners were very friendly, welcoming & helpful in answering any questions I had. The room was beautiful and attention to detail, in every aspect of the hotel, was second to none. Wish I could have stayed longer & I definitely plan to be back!!
Review 109:Booked double room, as advertised. Our bed was 2 singles joined together(no problem) but 2 separate sinmgle duvets - not good.
Review 110:Nice room, owner friendly.
Review 111:Breakfast was not included even though the room cost was exorbitant for a B and B at £150. The additional cost for breakfast was a ridiculous £36 for two people. The room was 15 feet from a busy highway. We booked their 'suite', but the TV was the smallest I've seen in any accommodation (16 inch) since flat screens came out. There was no signal and I had to strip and repair the antenna cable in order to receive a signal. Couldn't get the very complicated steam shower to work so had to take baths.
Review 112:Leaving biscuits, fruit and jelly beans in the room was a nice touch.
Review 113:Room dated and needs modernising. Bathroom very small and very old fashioned tiling. No hairdryer. Expensive for the quality - frankly we were disappointed. We wouldn't recommend this accommodations to others.
Review 114:Gardens and staff. We didn't eat but obviously food very good - restaurant looked lovely
Review 115:Good size accommodation, but very small bathroom. Extremely disappointedthat the hot tub and sauna needed to be pre booked and at a cost of £40per couple. This was not mentioned prior to booking and spoilt our stay. The outdoor courtyard facilities were the reason for booking, checked inat 4pm expecting relax before eating and had nothing to do! I felt itwas overpriced at £120 for room only with no spa.
Review 116:We stayed in the heather suite which was very comfortable, nicelydecorated and relaxing. Nice jacuzzi bath. We had evening meal (additional cost) that was outstanding, the food and surroundings.
Review 117:will book room with a shower next time, our mistake we had a very adequate spa bath
Review 118:A great eye for detail and delicious food very creatively served. Excellent wine list
