Reviews for Minster Garth Guest House

Review 1:Cleanliness was very poor. Two mattresses on top if each other . Filthyroom . No one on reception , expected to work out accommodation ,basically rude owner .

Review 2:Nothing -

Review 3:50/50 getting a parking spot. Breakfast was a let down, burnt toast, poached eggs overcooked. Overall place was not clean.

Review 4:Location near to town & the Minster

Review 5:No one there to greet us, had to make phone call to be told to look on a sheet on the wall, key to room was in the door. Everywhere needed a thorough cleaning. Curtains torn. Heard so many complaining at breakfast - host very dismissive of guests. Struggled to find dinning room - had to go out of the building and around to another entrance. Will not be booking there ever again!!

Review 6:The room was shabby and dirty. There was nobody there at reception when we arrived. Others had been waiting for 20 mins before we arrived. Luckily our name was on noticeboard with room number next to it. We found our room open with key on bed. Shower was blocked. Towels were frayed and grey. Door outside our room was open all night to allow other entry as keys were not included for that door. There was obvious damp issues by door due to this. Minster clock rang every half hour (obviously cant be helped) but if your a light sleeper not good. Got up for breakfast. All tables dirty and stacked with plates so no where to sit. Again no sign of staff. My partner went to complain at the kitchen where the owner was doing breakfast and was shouted at by him. He said the kitchen was a filthy mess so we went elsewhere to eat. It seamed that the one person was trying to run the whole place by himself and spreading himself too thin which showed. I am not sure how it got a 4 star status it was far below. In need of updating and a deep clean throughout and a new intake of staff!

Review 7:The hotel was nice from outside and located right next to the Minster - less than 5 minutes walk from center.

Review 8:The staff welcome, or lack of it, left a lot to be desired. There were also contractors staying here who had no idea how to behave by smoking in the immediate vicinity of the entrance door and also deliberately dropping stuff loudly on the floor of their room which was directly above my room which obviously generated a complaint from me which was only lamely dealt with by the staff member. Breakfast wasn't to bad, despite being in the building next door, not an ideal situation at all, especially if the weather is bad.

Review 9:Liked the price and the character of the building. This small town is very much overshadowed by the Minster.

Review 10:The owner told me over the phone i was slack and lazy because i asked to park in his car parking space. He then told me to go put a bad review up and put the phone down on me. He was very aggressive and made me feel really scared to be staying there. The whole hotel smelt of stale smoke. No loo Roll when it runs out, room not cleaned or cleaned throughout the whole trip. The lock on the window doesn't work even though i was on the ground floor and anyone could step into my room. Awful!

Review 11:There wasn't anything that was good about this guest house.

Review 12:Pillows weren't great, shower needed a deep clean, bath was cracked through the bottom, towels were a little old, dining room needs to be that and not an office also

Review 13:Helped me out although I had a booking for the following night

Review 14:On arrival at 18:45 I was told that the room I had booked and confirmed through Booking.com with 2 beds in the room was no longer available. I was then told I would have to accept a room with a double bed as this was all that was left. However they would charge me £69 not £79 (the price for the confirmed room via Booking.com). No alternative accommodation was offerred so I had to accept. I was staying with a male colleague who had to sleep on the chair. Thereofore the room I booked and stayed in was not fit for purpose. I compalined to the staff but was told owner not available. I complained to Booking.com who acknowledged my complaint over a week ago, but Booking.com have not responeded to me. The owner has since debited my card for the full £79 bb after his manager told me I would be charged £69BB. Be warned that what you book here is not what you get. Neither accommodation or price is guaranteed at this place. Oh, and don't bother to complain, it means nothing.

Review 15:Nothing

Review 16:No one was there to greet us and we had to telephone a number to get hold of him on our own mobile not good if it was an older couple who had no mobile, when we got hold of him he explained he would be 5 mins as he was in the bookies? When he came he was pleasant though really chatty and helpful which was good as the radiators didn't work said someone was gonna get them fixed and he gave us his mobile heater out of his bedroom, he pulled our duvet back and said that the stains were clean and it's impossible to get them all out and there is only one set of bedding per room and he has to clean all of them himself, he did get the spider out the bath for us. Breakfast was ok which he had to do his self also there was one more customer at breakfast and when he went to make his toast which you do yourself ( no problem) the bread loaf was mouldy. It's such a shame I think the one staff needs more help to overcome these issues he has too much to do on his own.

Review 17:The location is very good and the one staff was vey helpful

Review 18:Go outside house to get to breakfast room, inside house. Room was stuffy and smelly. Electricity - too many extension cables in room.

Review 19:Location perfect to town. Beautiful Georgian mansion. View from room was good.

Review 20:The property is dated and in need of complete refurbishment. Cleaning left a lot to be desired.

Review 21:Location was excellent being adjacent to the Minster. However there is only on street parking which is limited to two hours apart from Sunday's. Ken, who seemed to run the hotel by himself, on behalf of the owner.

Review 22:The place was filthy and smelt of foist. We went through a packet of anti bacterial wipes. The bed and bedding smelt, we were itching all night. We will never return to this accommodation and wished we had only read the reviews before booking!!!

Review 23:The noise from the Minster - chimes every 15 minutes. The room was very tired looking and in need of a deep clean. The toilet didn't flush!!

Review 24:The welcome was very friendly

Review 25:We were one of three people who had been double booked & all that could be offered was a twin room with shared facilities - not on. The owner had tried to contact me, but I was attending a funeral, so didn't get the message.

Review 26:The Housekeeper very kindly rang another Guest House, where we spent a very pleasant night.

Review 27:They double booked our room, and gave us a disgusting unclean room! Where there was black mould on the window frames, and around the bath, and inbetween all the tiles. Even the chrome radiator was covered in muck! Inside the draws were even mucky so had to leave clothes on table. The breakfast was cold when it eventually came (separately) the table didn't have cutlery, only had one glass, we cudnt find any butter for the toast - which we had to make. The bed had two mattresses we made it feel very unsafe and wobbled and creaked very loudly when we sat on it. When you tried sleeping u just rolled into middle. I want a full refund! We cudnt use the facilities. It's was disgusting and is no way a four star hotel! I want a full refund

Review 28:The local people were very friendly, and welcoming in the nearby town. Although even there view of where we were staying was very poor. It's its known as faulty towers!

Review 29:The hotel is 2 star at best - the room was tatty, the bathroom dreadful and the whole experience was depressing. Avoid at all costs

Review 30:The town is charming

Review 31:All a dissapointment dirty towels dirty bedding shower not working flooded dusty room put us off breakfast gave it a miss a waste if our money and worked hard to look forward to the break no staff anywhere dont deserve customers look more like a doss house for dss who wouldnt care as it gets paid.

Review 32:I simply did not think my room (9) was adequate. Linen was dirty and so were surroundings. My complaint has fallen on deaf ears, and I was told not to bother coming again. I can categorically state that I wont be!

Review 33:Ideal location for Minster and town centre.

Review 34:The room was dirty service was very basic and lots of room for improvement. Breakfast was like going to a chimps yea party very disorganised

Review 35:Was upgraded to a better room free of charge!6

Review 36:We'd booked rooms, but got put in a tiny apartment. Very cramped, uncomfortable put you up beds, one of which collapsed. Sink was in the shower cubicle! The man who took us in apologised for everything and blamed it on the absentee landlord! 2 TVs, one far too big for the space, which he seemed to think was all that mattered. Offered breakfast for free, but we decided to skip that. One picture hanging on the wall still had its cellophane wrapper and price on!!

Review 37:The standard of cleanliness was ok

Review 38:Nearest parking 5 mins away. room was ok, but only slept in it. Breakfast room was very crowded and dirty, breakfast not that good.

Review 39:close to the town centre.

Review 40:Room did not fit the specification on the booking form. Eg, no 'king sized' bed, no 'dining area', 'no ironing facilities.' 'Wardrobes' were an alcove with a curtain across. The towels were grey not white, there was pin-mould all around the bath, no 'desk'. The place was generally grubby and surely could not be four star as claimed. And this was supposed to be an upgraded room for which we paid extra!! We stayed only one night having paid for two (of our own volition due to change in circumstances) and so had no breakfasts but no reduction was made despite it being said the price was adjusted.

Review 41:Leaving

Review 42:Whole place was dowdy and unclean, dirty pillows laid in the stairwell for the time of stay, room was dirty, builders mugs for the tea, kettle on the floor and bathroom dirty with somebody's soap left. Did not resemble the photos at all.

Review 43:Location it was very close to town and the beautiful Minster.

Review 44:Our room was adjacent to reception and the main road. Being ground floor we couldn't open the windows but we could tell you everything about folk who checked in. Also it's next to the amazing Minster. The bells chime all night...

Review 45:Easy to find and in a beautiful part of Beverley.

Review 46:Nothing, I use booking.com for all my business travel, how booking.com can have this place in your portfolio is beyond me. The place is a complete tip, scruffy, I advise all to keep away from this place,

Review 47:Nothing,

Review 48:Unfortunately the apartment we had booked (family of 6) was double booked, but they did ring the day before to let us know and gave us a family room with double bed, 2 single.beds and a camp bed. We got there and was told the people who had been double.booked with us, never showed, but when I asked if we could have the apartment we originally booked, we were told no. So we were disappointed that 6 of us had to stay very squashed in what we would class a large bedroom. Service and staff were friendly though. Just a shame about being double booked.

Review 49:The room was lovely, although not what we booked. Ken was friendly, breakfast was lovely and lots to choose from. Great price aswell.

Review 50:Dirty bedroom. Stained bedding. £80 a night is twice what it is worth. Poster in reception that says good reviewers will get 10% off while bad reviewers aren't welcome back!

Review 51:Breakfast was great

Review 52:The Minster Clock! Kept me awake all night! Locals we met looked in shock/horror when we said we were staying there but we survived!

Review 53:Breakfast! Everything else was OK.

Review 54:When I looked to book this it said that a lady called Carol was improving the rooms etc after they had had a few bad years so I thought we'd give it a go. The bed was clean but unfortunately the ensuite wasn't up to the standard we were expecting, especially as the sign outside had 4 stars, the carpet looked as if it could do with a hoover and although there's a notice in the room saying it would be serviced everyday between 12 - 2, when we returned to our room late afternoon the bin hadn't been emptied or the tea/milk replenished. It's a trek round to the breakfast room too from where we were. We have had much better and cheaper accommodation in York.

Review 55:It is in a good position in Beverley, not too far to walk to the centre. We had the ground floor room in the cottage at the back and there was a fridge in the room and even nice wine glasses. Breakfast was quite nice with a pot of tea, cereal and unlimited toast.

Review 56:only a small point but the water pressure is very low in the shower & toilet

Review 57:lovely location, very friendly & helpful staff, very nice breakfast

Review 58:the bed was very hard and the room could have been cleaner, the curtains were filthy and generally the room could have done with a good scrub.

Review 59:the staff and breakfast were fantastic

Review 60:Cobwebby spidery ceiling , bedding worn and creased , no batteries in sky remote, bread mouldy at breakfast and breakfast was cooked in advance and reheated - dining room cluttered and dusty .

Review 61:The owner does not know how to run a business, he refuses to talk to guests if they have a complaint. The whole guest house needs to have a major clean. There is other accommodation in Beverley which are far superior to this guest house and are cheaper

Review 62:Best description is that it needs a woman's touch. It's a little tired and needs an update. I would not like to trek outside for breakfast if it were raining. Sorry.

Review 63:We were grateful for this accommodation as it was a very last minuet emergency booking for one night only.

Review 64:The place smelt like a charity shop. Breakfast was a joke no knifes available eventually got a pot of coffee but no cup's . would not recommend

Review 65:Location

Review 66:On arrival I was told the double en suite room I had booked was not available so was given a single with shared bathroom for only £5 less per night than the double should have been

Review 67:The location. Just outside city centre

Review 68:House is a bit scruffy, needs some TLC and a good clean. Breakfast room cramped and dishes not cleared away promptly.

Review 69:Largish room with a table and fridge, and two beds. Location was good. Characterful house. Excellent coffee at breakfast.

Review 70:Fridge did not work, shower basin very slow to drain away, no teaspoons in room, towels very hard and thin, bedding not ironed,Mr Hart very abrupt on phone, didn't seem to want us there. Will we stay again and recommend, I do not think so.

Review 71:Ken,he was always on hand, very helpful nothing too much trouble. Cooked a superb breakfast.Well done you. Made our stay bearable.

Review 72:White curtains that let 95% of the light in at 4 am. Bed linen didn't appear to be clean. Toilet seat loose

Review 73:Poor cleanliness and attention to detail lets it down.

Review 74:Cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The room and bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned properly for a long time and the bathroom floor was dirty and had hairs on it from the previous occupants. We had to go and ask for toilet roll as there was none in the room and the dirty/used glasses left by the previous occupants were not cleared away but just left on the side. The lights did not work in the room or the toilet when we returned after our day/evening at the races and did not come on until we were about to leave the next morning. The only lights that worked were the bedside lights, which was something or we would have been in total darkness for the night. There was only one hand towel and one bath towel for two of us and they smelt fusty. The location of our room was by the entrance to the hotel so was very noisy with people coming and going all the time.

Review 75:The bed was comfortable but creaked terribly if you moved an inch. Although we could not get an early check in we were able to use the room to get changed and leave our belongings as requested. The staff were accommodating when we asked for anything.

Review 76:The constant chimes from the cathedral. TV did not work in bedroom. Needed a little more attention to detail.

Review 77:Good location with parking and easy access to town.

Review 78:Creaky floorboard in the room above were a little disconcerting.

Review 79:The location was pleasant. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Nice to deal with real people rather than the cloned reception staff at major chains.

Review 80:The fridge in the room we found to be not working as the fruit had gone off by the morning

Review 81:The area is very picturesque and the house is close to the Minster

Review 82:no staff on arrival, took ages to arrive, room had no key, staff went away and then forgot to come back with key. Eventually sorted out. Breakfast was dreadful, tea was cold, no hot food. I was locked out for the first 15 minutes. They did not start to cook until 45 minutes in to Breakfast time

Review 83:nice room and clean

Review 84:We have never in all our years stayed at such a dismal place such asthis. We were amazed to discover that they have awarded their own starrating which is surely false advertising? Our welcome was to an emptyreception desk, after waiting for someone to answer the bell, we saw anotice on the wall advising us to ring a mobile number. We did so andwere told that the housekeeper had done a runner and we would have toshow ourselves to our own room and that the key would be in the door, Wedid so and were met with a higgledy piggly room full of old stainedfurniture (of which some of it was broken) The bed looked like it hadbeen slept in and was all crumpled. Full extension leads by the fridge,tv and under the bed. Cobwebs galore and dust, dust, dust. Large displayof plastic flowers weighed down by years of dust, an electrical fancaked in so much dust it would have been a surprise if it worked, mouldon the windows, which did not shut properly...you get the picture -abysmal. Other guests were left waiting at the reception desk to checkin and could not get hold of the owner as he had an answering messagesaying that he was in Doncaster swimming!! Other guests were justcrossing out their names next to room numbers and moving themselves. Thedoor was left open late at night so was worried about security. Managedto get through the night, waking feeling dirty and itchy. Breakfast -you have to go outside and walk round the building to the front door toenter the 'dining room' which is full of cheap furniture and haslegs propped up with tissue to stop them from wobbling. We were'served' by a 'gentleman' wearing dirty clothes withstains and paint marks on them. We were told to help ourselves tocereals which were on the side in open boxes, the first 3 or 4 boxes Ipicked up were empty. After daring to put a few flakes in my bowl, Idiscovered that there were black bits floating in my jug of milk so Iasked for some more.

Review 85:Leaving.

Review 86:The bedding and towels were disgusting and the room requires a fullupdate after it has had an intensive clean.I Didn't stay forbreakfast.

Review 87:The location and the road home !

Review 88:Poor check in, poor parking facilities. Breakfast not too bad but bacon so salty it was inedible.

Review 89:The ensuite bathroom was amazing, sunken bath and modern sink. Not sure about the safety of the TV you could swing out over the bath though.

Review 90:Mouldy pear and dusty storage box under the bed. Evidence of damp on the walls. No internet connection when logged into wi-fi.

Review 91:Central location adjacent to the Minster. Comfortable room, table, chairs, tea/coffee facilities, fridge. Free on-street parking in residents' bays with visitors' permit supplied by the guest-house.

Review 92:Tiny dirty room that had mould on curtains, windersill was filthy, kettle had that much limescale on couldnt take lid off, carpets unclean, full size fridge in room!!!

Review 93:Breakfast was ok although I had to make my own toast even when all I was having one a bacon sandwich

Review 94:full black bin bags piled high on path to bedroom; shabbiness of guest house.......I could go on. Suffice to say, I won't be staying there again

Review 95:Can think of nothing apart from useful street parking voucher

Review 96:The room was so dirty, not been hovered, dirty sheets, paint peeling off the walls, old grey stained towels, and dirty bathroom. Didn't even use the shower! And you had to go out the building to the one next door for breakfast! I would never stay there again, and I would like a refund as it was very overpriced and dirty! Not a happy customer at all.

Review 97:location was good

Review 98:Firstly, the top floor rooms are nothing like the photos on the site. Our room was so small we could barely walk around the bed. Marks on walls, very tattered and in need of a facelift.

Review 99:friendly staff, nice break fast and atmosphere

Review 100:The whole place smelt of smoke! The rooms were not clean and there were cobwebs everywhere and there was hair in the bath tub. The breakfast was nice but soacked in butter. The hashbrowns were dripping with oil. The house keeper was scruffy and had a missing front tooth.

Review 101:Walking outside to get to the breakfast room. Cold shower in morning

Review 102:Spacious room. Electric heater already in room if needed. Option of eating a take away.

Review 103:The room had not been cleaned in ages due to the amount of dust and cobwebs. The bathroom had blocked drains to the sink and shower and needed pressure washing to make it fit for human use!!!

Review 104:Leaving the room to come home

Review 105:No one on reception to welcome us, couldn't get a response from owners for at least 1/2 hour and therefore couldn't get into our room The room was filthy, it obviously hadn't been cleaned for weeks The double bed had not been made up, it didn't have a sheet on and the mattress cover was stained and dirty The bedside tables had enough dust to write your name in When approached by phone the owners were rude, arrogant and totally unhelpful, refusing to clean the room and make up the bed. We ended up having to go home. The owners also refused to refund our money, I had to go to booking . Com who kindly refunded our money I would not recommend this guest house at all, I came away feeling, dirty, itchy and very dissappointed.

Review 106:It is in a beautiful location

Review 107:Climbing all the stairways. There's no lift and I was on the top floor. My stay was 4 days and I think this place is most suitable for overnight stops with minimum luggage.

Review 108:Location and breakfast.

Review 109:Nobody at the reception to check us in ,only a phone no. to ring ,which they took a while to answer. We were then told our room number and that the key was in the door ! !The person on the phone said he would see us later ,but we didn't see a member of staff until breakfast the next day. Our fellow guests apparently had similar stories to tell.

Review 110:Good position for visiting the Minster and town.Good breakfast .

Review 111:small shower Minster Bells at 4am...but quickly went back to sleep

Review 112:Good room Great breakfast Great location Overall, would recommend and will use again.

Review 113:husband not friendley didnt seem interested.to many cobwebs above bed and in bathroom, curtains fell down when drawn as they only had four hooks on them.

Review 114:wife very friendley, brilliant breakfast,

Review 115:We found the room a bit cool for us when we came in in the evening. No heating on in bedroom. Had we have been staying longer we would of said something.

Review 116:As we were attending a concert in the Minster it was an ideal location. We had read reviews after booking to stay here - but we enjoyed our nights bed and breakfast. Prior to setting off I contacted the hotel regarding parking and I was informed of two places we could park and they would provide a parking permit. We had not trouble parking and we visited the Minster again the next day for the food festival. Breakfast was good and the service. If we were in the area again we would book again.

Review 117:Bathroom dusty. Bed very uncomfortable, bedding & towels very worn, need replacing. No mirror near socket 2 hairdry hair. Must have been given a 4 * rating years ago & things not replaced. Possibly get a 2* now! I would not stay here again & it is very overpriced.

Review 118:Alison was very pleasant & welcomed us with a smile. Breakfast excellent. Next door 2 westminister & not far 2 walk 2 centre.

Review 119:The rooms we stayed in were filthy. A good clean is required throughout the establishment. The bed linen was stained and the towels were also marked. You could not see through the windows in the dining room as the sun was trying to shine through. Fortunately we were all staying for one night. This establishment is misrepresented on the website and I feel clients should know what to expect.

Review 120:Staff we did meet were pleasant.

Review 121:Having to move room when i was told i wouldn't have to,room 8 at top of building higher room numbers lower down, not enough room for clothes.should also place notices for guests to not let room doors bang.,and having to exit building to get to breakfast room, and finally i did not like insecure on street parking.

Review 122:It was very handy for me to go to the Minster for 8 am Holy Communion on Sunday,it was handy for town.

Review 123:Every electrical item apart from tv had fuse missing cook, cleaner &receptionist all same person room was scruffy bathroom needs some tlcbreakfast was terrible everything seemed to be a effort for the lady todo avoid this place if I could of held back payment I would have

Review 124:Proximity to the centre of town parking permit

Review 125:Good location but noisy due to the bells from the Minster. However, other than that the place was fine for our needs. I guess the locals just get used to the chiming every 15 minutes!

Review 126:My sister and I stayed as we were visiting the Literature Festival. The place was well located, well equipped with a friendly service. Good range of breakfast available. There were no complications with the parking permit, all worked well.

Review 127:Beware the bells!

Review 128:Wonderful characterful building in a beautiful location right next to Beverley minster. Nice individually decorated room with some quirky touches.

Review 129:Poor attention to detail throughout the guest house. We were greeted on arrival by a very young (13 or 14 year old) presumably family member, who was quite surly and didn't give us any information (eg. basics like location of bathrooms, breakfast room, etc). The window in our room was broken, and the pane was hanging loose, letting in the air and noise from outside and threatening to drop on the head of someone on the footpath below if it was even lightly knocked. A note on the door told us to text our breakfast time and special dietary requirements to a number, which we did, but this was never acknowledged and the information clearly hadn't been passed on. The place looked like it needed a good clean, especially the shared bathroom, which had piles of dust, discarded toilet rolls, and used towels hidden behind the door. Wouldn't stay here again.

Review 130:Good location and a nice breakfast.

Review 131:Grubby towels Bed was about 10 years old sweeqed every time u moved in it Kettle was manky Bacon burnt to a crisp The whole building looked like it was ready to fall down

Review 132:I booked a single room (9) for £44 which was a bit drab and had the squeakiest saggiest mattress known to man. Added to which the minster bells chimed every hour through the night which didn't help matters. If the room had been cheeper to reflect the decor I wouldn't have minded so much, but if you're paying £44/night there should at the very least be a decent mattress in the room!

Review 133:My friends booked a double room which was lovely, the breakfast was wonderful and the staff were very friendly. TV, wifi, DVDs in room so would be good for lone travellers. The room was clean and the bathroom facilities although a bit dated were also clean.

Review 134:The price Shared bathrooms Unhelpful staff Breakfast time was too short Rooms and bathroom was very dirty Thin windows next to a very loud street The minster chimed every hour Noisy guests

Review 135:The location

Review 136:You need to invest in some double glazing,it was like camping outsidewith the minster chiming every 15 mins plus noise of traffic from roadoutside. On saturday from 5pm to 8pm & 11 45pm until we shouted upwe thought somebody was refurbishing in the room above us.

Review 137:Breakfast

Review 138:On the web site the guest house looked lovely. We arrived to utter chaos, the owner had gone away suddenly, leaving the housekeeper, who was in tears, and the young temp who was also upset. We paid £79 for a double room, there were 8 in the group, none of us were allocated the given rooms, the bed was covered in hairs, grey sheets and towels and behind the bed a family of woodlice, earwigs etc. had taken up residence. The people who were allocated our original room told me the next morning there was no electricity, shower was broken and the tiles had lifted off the floor! I must congratulate the owner for fooling trading standards, environmental health and especially the public please stay away!!!

Review 139:Was told I would have a quiet room and arrived to find that the quiet room I had been promised had been given to another couple. My room was on the ground floor with two large windows and almost behind the reception desk and main door. Incredibly noisy. Would never go back.

Review 140:5 ft bed v bouncy - kept each other awake if turned over! Clean except for dust under bed. No ventilation. V light curtains - Venetian blind tho' down wouldn't shut to cut light. Those wonderful Minster bells (need ear plugs!). Full English a disappointment - NO cooked brk'fst after 08.30 just cereal, yogurt, toast, juice & beverage & considering little sleep weren't able to make 08.29 deadline!

Review 141:Location next to Beverley Minster superb (but quarterly chimes prevented sleep). Easy 10 min walk into town. Selection of restaurants.
