Reviews for Sidholme Hotel
Review 1:The building and rooms are a little tired and the interior is quite old fashioned and could do with a revamp but it's clean and welcoming
Review 2:A hidden gem. The building and grounds are beautiful if somewhat tired but it's comfortable and reasonable price with a hearty breakfast availanke
Review 3:The weather was quite stormy but that was well outside the control of the hotel.
Review 4:Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room had recently been refurbished and was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast had a varied selection and was served very quickly after ordering.
Review 5:It didnt tell us on the web site that the restaurant was pre order only...luckily the Indian restaurant was open down the road.
Review 6:It was there and we were very tired.
Review 7:This hotel is not truly represented on your website ( to include pictures), as what appears in reality . The hotel is in a poor state , very dated, unclean, and one short of a Christian fellowship hostel - This is all well and good for the church goers to have an ecclesiastical retreat, but not what we ordered ! . Having booked our rooms , I quickly discovered we have to share facilities and rang the Hotel to request a family room or upgrade , This was resolved over the phone , however , the room was tiny , comprising of a large single and two bunk beds. - basic furniture and flaky paint work throughout. We were asked to share table at breakfast with other residents ??? ..... not exactly a New Years treat !!! .
Review 8:Too many stairs there should be a lift. Needs decorating along the hallways etc.as the interior looks rather tired
Review 9:The room was comfortable and the breakfast was presented with a good choice
Review 10:Nothing particularly a little outdated but they are renovating
Review 11:The room was basic but clean and comfy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool and gardens were lovely and it was very peaceful. We had the breakfast which was self service but there were staff on hand, great selection of options.
Review 12:There is no mention on the hotel website about the annexes. The onlyreference on this website is to the fact that there is a main building.By my calculation about half of the rooms are not in the main buildingand are not "elegant" or Georgian or with "gardenviews". On arrival I saw a building that looked like a block ofcouncil flats. I believe it is one of the annexes which is hidden fromthe main building by a tall hedge thus no lovely garden views or brightrooms there. The brick roundabout outside the entrance is barelypassable without damaging your car. The reception area is unnecessarilyscruffy and uninviting. Our room was accessed via the back of the hotelthrough a trades area and delapedated door into another annex (again notelegant or Georgian). There was a strong unpleasant smell inside fromthe kitchen which probably also would have been in our room had thewindow not been left open. In our room there was a lot of pealing paint, the bathroom probably from the eighties (with a draft from the windowwhen using the bath). There where net curtains covering pealing paint onthe metal windows, car park and laundry. No lovely garden view, nothinggeorgian or elegant. Oh well I kept thinking at least the bed looksclean. But it then became apparent that the mattress was hard on oneside soft and on the other resulting in a ridge down the length of itand causing me to be tipped to one side. I informed reception butnothing during our two night stay was done about it. I imagine this isbecause the whole hotel is due a refurbishment. There is no lightingdown the front drive so we walked back out the dismal back entrance intothe town for the evening. At breakfast there were basically three tablesof eight, so it was required to share with other guests. Given the sizeof the hotel and number of rooms this seems odd as well as potentiallyoff putting to some people.
Review 13:I will remember to look at the reviews next time I book a hotel. Therewere net curtains to obscure the view of laundry and skip. My friendkindly took the worst mattress.
Review 14:love the location and gardens its set it. rooms are very clean and comfortable . we always have a relaxing time when we stay here. lovely pool and great breakfast and helpful staff.
Review 15:No bad experience however you should be prepared for some 'tired' fixtures but everything worked so what is the problem !!!
Review 16:WOW !! The hotel is a period mansion in lovely grounds and with a magnificent Music room .. you have to see it to be believed. We arrived late at night and had a little explore and were dumbstruck. Whilst the property has had better days there is refurbishment going on but the overall feeling about the place is amazing. It is like walking into a Downton Abbey set , all be it a little tired and quirky it just adds to the attraction. Breakfast was great and included in the bargain price !! Also a full size snooker table hides in the games room !!
Review 17:Unfortunately we visited whilst there was some kind of methodist church convention going on. Their party was rude and inconsiderate and no attempt was made to subdue them when complaints made.
Review 18:Breakfast was good and all the waitresses and waiters wee lively. Pool was nice.
Review 19:I like my showers to have much more pressure than the one we had. It was disappointing but not a deal breaker and we will look to return at some point. We live in Turkey and my daughter and family live in Ottery St Mary so when we visit we need a local base and this was the best by far so would love to return.
Review 20:Such a lovely venue.
Review 21:Where do I start!!! The rooms were not as photographed on the internet. There need a lot of work doing to them, in my opinion. Most of the hotel does actually! My sister and I booked our rooms under two completely separate bookings, weeks apart, on different payment cards however the receptionist decided he would refund my money onto my sister's card along with her refund! Luckily for me my sister has paid me the money however this is completely wrong and should not have been done!!!
Review 22:The location is great, there is a nice swimming pool too.
Review 23:Couldn't get a double room that we thought we had booked and some quest were very noisy in the early hours of the morning.
Review 24:Great value and quality breakfast.
Review 25:Everything! This hotel was not as advertised! From it's'location'....not central, not near sea at all! Moment steppedthru' the door we knew this was not for us! The staff allocated us aroom next to the kitchen! All we could smell was fat and food! We hadcalled to book our dinner seating, as was asked in our confirmationletter, only to be told what time we would eat. No option and our timechoice was totally ignored. We turned on our heels and left! We wouldnever stay here or recommend this hotel to anyone! We would very verymuch appreciate our £103.50 back, and if we are not offered it here, wewill pursue it thru' the hotel itself! This is the harshest'review' I have ever written about any hotel I have stayed in,and I do not review like this for the sake of it!
Review 26:Nothing!
Review 27:I think that ideally it would need a little bit of updating inside.
Review 28:History, friendliness of people and staff, location/surroundings, facilities, breakfast and price. I will definitely visit again.
Review 29:We were given a room in the annex building. It was poorly furnished, dripping tap, window jammed open, cold, very basic, shared bathroom facility, no TV probably due to the fact that the walls were so thin you could hear every one around you. I would'nt have been surprised if the adjacent rooms were being let as temporary housing for people on council waiting list. It didn't take us long to decide to find alternative accommodation. Not happy. A waste of money.
Review 30:An economical place to stay in a pleasant, peaceful environment. The room was basic but clean and the food at breakfast was very good. I've stayed a few times when visiting family locally and it's fine.
Review 31:Room was shabby and the walls were made of cardboard. The gentlemen snoring in the next room may as well have been in my bed. Terrible nights sleep. It was actually ao noisy that we rang the out of hours phone (no 24hr reception desk,) to try and change rooms but they didn't have anything apart from a non on-suite room on the other side of the hotel. Car park was constantly full during my stay.
Review 32:Fantastic breakfast. Very helpful staff. Good location.
Review 33:Was not informed I would be in annex, no TV, no Internet. Kettle did not work took nearly 1hour to sort it. Last time I stayed was excellent. Dissapointed on this trip.....sorry
Review 34:The approach path to the hotel is not well lit. Also poor coverage of WiFi - unable to connect in some parts of the hotel.
Review 35:The surrounding gardens and friendliness of all the staff in the reception and restaurant areas.
Review 36:Beautiful building, set in lovely grounds, with fantastic trees, shrubs and foliage. Excellent value for money too. We will certainly use Sidholme Hotel again when we next visit Sidmouth.
Review 37:There was a damp on the ceilling and walls in the bathroom and a used tissue on the bed on our arrival.
Review 38:the building and the garden are just incredible!
Review 39:I wouldn't say I had a bad experience in any way, but sound insulation between rooms wasn't good.
Review 40:Location beautiful and value for money excellent.
Review 41:No control on the heating, was a little warm. Small window in our room.
Review 42:Beautiful place, wonderful surroundings. Highly recommend it! Short walk to the waters edge.
Review 43:Room needed updating & ceiling had water damage. Had to share dinner & breakfast with other guests (mainly part of Christian Guild). One of the receptionists was quite sullen & unhelpful - the other lady was quite nice.
Review 44:Dinner & breakfast very good.
Review 45:Extremely poor bedroom accommodation in the annex. No en-suite facilities and number of bathrooms and toilets totally inadequate for the number of bedrooms. It was more like a 1960s youth hostel than a hotel. I did not realize in this day and age any hotels did not have en-suite facilities. Bedrooms were tatty and tired and no lift. Checked out after 1 night of a 3 night booking. First thing I was told was I would not get a refund, "great" customer relations. Website does not mention that it was a Christian Guild hotel. I have no objection to this as I am a Practising Catholic but It should be part of their advertising. I would suggest they pay less attention to their pool facilities and improve the annex. Wish I had read the reviews before I booked as many others are of the same opinion.
Review 46:Excellent breakfast. Location was good close to the centre of town.
Review 47:The annexe was dismal. To be fair, you get what you pay for, and we had taken the very cheapest rooms, so I wasn't expecting 5-star comfort! I can honestly live with a room where the washbasin dates back to the 1960s with no trouble at all, but the whole annexe was overall rather grubby. The carpet in the corridor was horribly stained, the carpet in the rooms was suspicious-looking, and the wallpaper peeling and unappealing. It does not cost more to keep a place clean... I was told by the staff that these rooms are due for renovation - I had to agree.
Review 48:The main building itself was apparently fine, clean and well-looked after, and if we stay there again, I'll make sure that we get a room there. Breakfast was unusual in that you serve yourself from a side-buffet, but it was good, and as copious as you yourself let it be. We didn't sample the delights as we had a lot of other things to do.
Review 49:The relative long driveway or entrance up to the hotel from the main street was very dark.
Review 50:The friendly and accommodating staff. The hotel had a computer the guest´s could use. The absence of a tv in my room. My room was kept clean and tidy. The friendly atmosphere of the whole place.
Review 51:The Hotel was excellent , staff very friendly, we only stayed one night as it served the purpose. Our room was in the annexe which was very comfortable. We will be using this hotel again.
Review 52:We didn't like getting told to sit at a table with a bunch of old people (who thankfully turned out to be lovely) but we like to chat amongst ourselves and have a choice to sit elsewhere, there were plenty more tables available. Staff were not overly friendly either - restaurant manager lady in particular not that nice. Also would have been nice to have a tv, but I know we got the cheaper room, and we were very pleased with the room anyway. Just a shame the staff and breakfast set up let is down a little. Would still recommend for a night or 2 anyway.
Review 53:Lovely Hotel, even the Annexe part we stayed in was nice and comfortable and great value. Nice buffet breakfast in the morning and 10 minute walk to the town/seaside. Good value for money.
Review 54:Doors banging at night don't see the point of closers if you just shut the doors manualy would be a lot quieter
Review 55:Great value for money and free use of pool breakfast very good staff very friendly loved sitting near pond in evening and thought new plants looked great
Review 56:The beautiful building, lovely grounds and friendly, professional staff provided a wonderful, relaxing break. The whole atmosphere, including the swimming pool, was welcoming and calm.
Review 57:Had to leave half way through the night no staff present and didn't answer there phone the coldest rooms no heating until 8am when the heaters are turned on
Review 58:Breakfast very busy on first day due to large bible study group. Other 2 days were fine.
Review 59:Excellent location close enough to town. Very quiet. Lovely grounds and pool. Good breakfast but did not have dinner as the fixed time did not suit.
Review 60:The shared bathroom was not very inviting and looked long overdue for refurbishment.
Review 61:The breakfast was extremely good and the swimming pool was very clean and warm. The grounds were lovely.
Review 62:Nothing.
Review 63:Unbeatable price. Lovely old building maturing gently in beautiful grounds. Staff very friendly and helpful. Swimming pool was a real bonus too.
Review 64:Threadbare carpets on 3rd floor stairs in two or three places.Decor in same areas very tired.Needs updating.Having to change rooms half way through a 4 night stay annoying.
Review 65:Swimming pool excellent although not in Hotel main building.Breakfast good and lots of it.
Review 66:I didn't like the fact we were miss sold on booking.com it doesn't tell you it's a christian guild hotel it doesn't tell you theres an anex where we stayed with no wifi no tv no on suit we had to share a bathroom which I really didn't like. We had no tv in our room so we couldn't sit and wind down it was go in straight to sleep wake up straight out. We had to share a breakfast table with 4 other people that we didn't no because all the tables were reserved for the church groups so I couldn't even sit and eat my breakfast without feeling uncomfortable the breakfast was really nice just a shame we didn't feel like we could stop and enjoy it we ate and dashed. The staff at breakfast were atrocious they kept trying to take our plates and cups etc away before we'd even finished one lady on our table was eating her cereal put the spoon in her mouth and the waiter took her bowl away whilst half full still not on at all none of them were English and didn't no when we said no we haven't finished that it ment no they carried on any way I had to hold my glass of juice to show them I wasn't finished.
Review 67:The bed was comfy the breakfast was lovely and the building and grounds were really pretty.
Review 68:The room and ajoining corridor are in a need of a repaint. My room could do with a furniture update desperately. The room was always far too hot. The bathroom serving our room was in need of the same attention. Parts of the exterior of the main building could do well for a coat of paint.
Review 69:The staff were always very friendly and helpful. The breakfast supplied was a lovely spread and well presented. Very peaceful atmosphere and great location.
Review 70:The hotel was very old and in need of a complete make over, to bring it up to modern standards. Didn't get any breakfast as there was a lack of seating.
Review 71:The grounds and location, beds ok .
Review 72:The room in the annex was not very nice, it looked directly into the car park was quite small and the floor near the window seemed to shake when walked on. If the lovely staff had not moved us, we would have probably gone home.
Review 73:When we arrived we were very disappointed with the accommodation but after letting reception know, we were moved to a nice room for one night and then to a lovely two room accommodation for the remaining two.
Review 74:Smallish room. Shared toilet. Had to park quite a way from room.
Review 75:Nice historic building with original period features. Reasonably convenient for town & sea front. Swimming pool a bonus.
Review 76:The room had the appearance of a dorm room, and hadn't been updated in a while
Review 77:The grounds / gardens were nice the lobby and pool very very nice
Review 78:Very little to complain about. To be very particular I could say that one morning they forgot to leave me any milk for my morning cup of tea! I would have liked to have had wifi in my bedroom to listen to hymns/songs on YouTube. Otherwise, it was great.
Review 79:The low cost and good value of bed and breakfast.
Review 80:Was probably the most unfriendliest place we have ever stayed, the guests were unfriendly and the staff were equally as unfriendly and there was not a feeling of welcome at all.
Review 81:The hotel was very dated but also quite stunning. The grounds were also amazing and it was nice and close to town.
Review 82:Bathrooms needed painting carpets in needed good clean no lift have bad knees and annex has stairs only walls sothin could hear snoring even with my iPod on music on
Review 83:Location pool and grounds
Review 84:Warm plates would make an excellent breakfast perfect.
Review 85:Beautiful building and lovely staff. Nice swimming pool open sensible hours and an excellent breakfast.
Review 86:My room was boiling and my small window opened onto a flat roof, which was easily accessible on the first floor. I could not leave my room unoccupied with the window open because it was an open invitation for someone to get in. I didn't feel safe sleeping with the window open so was uncomfortable. The hotel boasts guaranteed car parking, with c20 rooms there were not enough spaces! I had to park as close to the hotel wall as I could, as did 2 other cars. The spare car park at the back was full but access to it was very narrow, I am sure guests have scraped their cars trying to get round the tight brick walled roundabout.
Review 87:The swimming pool was excellent and the food very tasty
Review 88:No hot water on arrival or the next morning, then having to debate about getting compensation
Review 89:Some of the staff were friendly and the location to the town was good
Review 90:we did not dislike anything the rooms in the annex are basic but are good value for money
Review 91:fantastic location and building/gardens very good breakfast great indoor pool
Review 92:The shower didn't work. The ceiling had water damage. The furniture was tired.
Review 93:The breakfast was good and the people were friendly. The external building and grounds were excellent.
Review 94:We were given a disabled room for the first 3 nights (we had to complain and got another more suitable room for the last 2). It was too small for a cot for my toddler and the bathroom had no proper shower or bath to bathe him or us in adequately. The facilities are quite run down and shabby and for over £100 a night that we paid, I felt it was overpriced.
Review 95:The staff were very friendly especially at breakfast time. The room was spotlessly clean every day. The grounds were very nice with lovely gardens and it was an easy walk to Sidmouth town.
Review 96:Unfortunately no hot water 2 days in a row, so no shower in the morning. Had shower in swimming pool area later. Problem resolved but didn't help at the time. Staff were friendly and helpful, ok.
Review 97:Definite bonus having swimming pool. Also snooker room available. Enjoyed the situation. Beautiful old house and gardens.
Review 98:I don't think I would have liked to be in the annex rooms
Review 99:We loved the location and the gardens. The hotel was quirky but very nice. The pool was brilliant and such a bonus.
Review 100:The car park is far to dark at night time. My son fell over and I found it hard to carry my one year old baby to the front of the hotel. The hot water went off and I had to wash my hair in freezing cold water, which wasn't pleasant. The high chair straps need washing they are very dirty.
Review 101:We thought that the staff were lovely and very helpful. The breakfast was lovely and so was the swimming pool. The grounds were very pretty too. The room was nice and clean, and we appreciated that my husband was allowed to stay in the room with us at short notice.
Review 102:There was no hot water, nothing at all coming from the hot tap. Reception said they were having problems after a hard days work first thing you want is a good wash but not in freezing cold water.
Review 103:Cheap and cheerful.
Review 104:Booking coms fault more than the hotel, but not given adequateexplanation upon reserving room that although I knew there would be ashared bathroom, there would also be the most basic facilities inc no tvin room which was not mentioned when I decided to pay seventy pounds tostay, in what ended up being an annex which had absolutely nothing, nowifi coverage, no tv, was run by the Christian society or some suchorganisation and instead of a comfy if not luxurious stay, it was morelike a sabbatical....not expected at all for seventy pounds! :0( verydisappointing.
Review 105:Breakfast
Review 106:Very poor standard of decor. I know this is a period property but it is on bad need of upgrading. It is like staying in boarding school.
Review 107:Swimming pool big plus. Room very spacious and clean. Grounds very nice. Good location to walk to town for pubs and restaurant. Sidmouth is a lovely town.
Review 108:Noisy guests staying in room above us that got up very early in the morning.
Review 109:We loved the location and the swimming pool was very relaxing- breakfast ws excellent aswell.
Review 110:Only after making a non-refundable booking did I find that the hotel was run by the Christian Guild. What should have been a public area was taken over by amateur preachers. Accommodation rooms were dated and poorly fitted.
Review 111:The section of the hotel I stayed in did not have wifi. The range of the wifi has got to be extended.
Review 112:The staff were very helpful and nice. Facilities including a nice indoor pool made the stay enjoyable.
Review 113:Very dated throughput needs updating. Room wasn't ready when we got there at 2 they offered us coffee but we had to pay for it. I was expecting one on the house as our room wasn't ready after two it was more like 3 when it was ready
Review 114:Location was good and the pool great
Review 115:The night we were there. Some parents allowed their kids to run amuck. Around and around the corridors of the bedrooms. Up and down the stairs ! Not the staffs fault but perhaps a manger should have had a quiet word with the parents ?
Review 116:We got a last minute deal. It was fantastic value for money with that.
Review 117:We thought the decor was looking a bit tired and the carpets were quite stained in our room and the Hal way
Review 118:Hotel was in o lovely setting and the breakfast had a good choice
Review 119:Hotel is run by Christian Fellowship, I am sure they are very nice people but we would not choose to stay in a place with strong religious connections. Breakfast was terrible, food almost ran out on 2nd day at 9.15, service was until 9.30.
Review 120:Pool good when open.
Review 121:i booked two nights in this hotel but received an e mail from hotel after I had booked to say I had one room until 12 for one day then I would have to wait until approx. 2 pm the following day and change to another room, so practically had to live out of a suitcase , not my idea of a nice weekend hotel break.
Review 122:Location of hotel very good, walking distance to bars and restuarants which were needed as no bar in hotel
Review 123:accessibility for disabled . And the rooms not having toilets closer to the room and only 1 bathroom per floor as well .
Review 124:Swimming pool was great and the grounds are stunning x
Review 125:My 'room' literally had a single bed and a tiny single wardrobe, with a sliding door at the foot of the bed into the awful bathroom... Had to be a sliding door as you wouldn't be able to open it! I clearly didn't review it well enough (last minute booking but it looked lovely) as this is a Christian establishment. Which I really have no problem with but it was absolutely not for me as very very intense and in your face. However, they seemed to be having a wonderful time clapping and singing.. For the same price I checked into the Hunters Mood hotel.. Better location, huge beautiful rooms, everything fabulous there!!
Review 126:The grounds and the look of the 'hotel' are rather pretty.. But after that it goes terribly down hill
Review 127:Kids running around shouting and screaming in the passage ways whilst we were trying to relax in our room in the afternoon.
Review 128:The grounds are gorgeous and the staff were very friendly indeed, especially at breakfast time. We enjoyed some time in the pool as well which was just such a luxury to have. It was also very sweet to come back from dinner and find a teddy bear outside our room - I wanted to keep him he was so adorable. I thoroughly enjoyed our time there - well done to all involved.
Review 129:No faults to report.
Review 130:Lovely welcome as soon as we arrived. Excellent indoor swimming pool, changing rooms, toilets, lockers, hair dryers, towels. A huge selection for breakfast, large round tables were great. Lovely chance to meet other holidaymakers, or if you want on your own plenty of tables. Really great grounds, and really lovely for families with children. Loads of activities. Chanel Island cricket, music quiz, film nights. I was over in the annex and it was really comfortable. Plenty of toilets, and large bathrooms. I never had to queue. Parents in the main hotel, very happy with the room. Great character hotel.
Review 131:If they were more honest that this is not a normal hotel and guestsshould expect spartan conditions and not the nice rooms shown in photosthen it would be ok. When I said I had to leave 7.30am (not v early fora hotel) nobody bothered to tell me reception would still be closed. They did tell me breakfast only starts at 8am but no attempt toaccommodate a slightly earlier start with something simple E.G.Continental with coffee. These things add up to a disappointingexperience.
Review 132:Lovely grounds, low price, proximity to sea front. Friendly butunhelpful welcome.
Review 133:small room and bathroom. Shower rickety and no place for shampoo, shower gel etc. Price inflated for folk week.
Review 134:Breakfast. Lovely location and beautiful building.
Review 135:We did not expect to be given a room in the annex with shared bathroom and toilet! The room was basic if not a little tired. The beds were clean and comfortable but I did think a bit over priced.
Review 136:Hotel is in a beautiful convenient location. Breakfast was very good, staff very friendly
Review 137:room was tatty with rusty windows peeling furniture stained carpet missing curtain hooks, bathrooms had water stained walls and carpet was also stained, up lots of stairs which was difficult with limited mobility, pool was again a trek up a step hill. breakfast was ok, better if you ordered something cooked fresh, overall very poor value for money,
Review 138:the staff were pleasant
Review 139:Would have appreciated a room with a view of the outstanding grounds
Review 140:The ethos of the hotel was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and we enjoyed the family feel of meals on large tables which really encouraged conversation. We also found the hospitality side very appealing.
